I'm planning to get a lumia 800. Since I always use the phone as a music player with my westone, I would like to ask whose bought lumia 800:
1. How's the sound quality of lumia?
2. In what extent the improved sound quality with the firmware update? I read the review in GSMArena and shown a disappointing result

Audio quality
I am very disappointed with the audio quality.
If it was my only phone and I couldn't compare it to anything else I would probably think it's ok but yesterday in bed with my earphones on watching a youtube video I kept getting interference noise and the quality isn't as good as on my iPhone 4S.
Also I have tested both Lumia 800 and iPhone 4S sending audio via bluetooth to my car stereo (Nissan Connect) and the difference is shocking. The iPhone sounds as if the cable was plugged in and the quality is great but the Lumia makes it sounds like your listening to FM in a bad coverage area.
Don't worry about your english, it isn't my first language either.
If you really love your music I would recommend you stay away from the Lumia for now, also because battery doesn't last even a day. heh

I'm a Westone 3 user and the sound on my Lumia is beyond disastrous. I can totally confirm the GSMArena results. This was such a shocker to me when I first plugged my earphones I couldn't believe it.
Some users though report that their sound is fine (although it's difficult to sort out people who test sound on stock headset and such stuff).
I still haven't received the update, so don't know whether it helps or not.
But definitely try to test sound before buying this phone! I mean, here it's not just bad. It's totally ridiculously awful.
Soundwise you should look at three things:
1 call quality with phone earpiece
2 call quality with phone internal speaker
3 audio quality of internal speaker
4 audio quality to external device
5 mic
All have different character and should imo be included in a review. Furthermore audio is very difficult to objectively review as user experience is based on personal opinions.
anyway, my experiences with the Lumia are these:
1) call quality earpiece: normal phone calls in office, phone calls with a lot of background noise, and sound quality while in call are very ok, what you'd expect from Nokia. the volume level is okay too, the lowest setting is not too loud like on most phones.
2) call quality internal: okay, loud enough, not too much treble which is very please on prolonged phonecalls.
3) audio on internal speaker, what do you expect from a 3 mm driver in a very small cabinet. I think it's fine, not harsh, much treble and don't expect any bass.
4) audio to external:
a) tested on hi end phones, sounds very well, includes all frequencies, converters sound a bit flat but i'm sure most users won't notice.
b) bluetooth i had someone verifiy and this seems good quality
5) I had someone else call me with Lumia800 and this is as expected from Nokia
But, I'm a bit worried about "audio quality updates" like in the latest firmware. I'm sure they fiddle with algorithms, noise cancelling, auto volume, and minimal levels. I live with the philosophy that whatever is good, doesn't need to be changed.

That's a great philosophy, but it's obviously not good for all users. Whether an update can fix anything or this is a faulty batch of phones is another question.

Can't believe this. MANY users say the sound is awful and I can confirm it also. It just lacks MUCH low frequencies.
What is your HW version etc. ?
Many users have reported improved sound quality and better bass after update released yesterday.

I went to shop with my pair of hf5 and um2 to test the phone's demo (It still didn't release at my place.... sigh........ and the phone had not updated with the latest patch)
That's my experience
- NO BASS
- Other frequencies -> medicore
- Stereo is good, it felt like the music is surrounding you ( Better than my xperia pro )
- There are some noise when completed silent...
To be honest, I quite disappointed with lumia , its music performance (I should rephase it, lol) even cannot compete with 5800 3 years ago!
I miss my i9000 with voodoo sound... it is so hard to have a phone with nice looking , good music performance and not-a-iphone

i agree the sound quality of phones has decreased. everything is made smaller, faster, and lighter and you can see this in the build quality

I do not use equalizer, what i believe a good music player is simply deliver accurate output, pure frequency response is the best.
Let the earphone do the job, not the equalizer, that's what i believe, lol~

Actucally I live in Hong Kong and Meizu planned to release MX on 1.1.2012
In fact, I do have a bias on china-brand phone for its built quality, goodwill... I did not know how's the foreigners think about Meizu

so while typing this i listen to music using good, very good headphones. clean and crisp sound, bass included. no overkill in the bass but the frequency are definetely there. just don't use tiny in ear drivers to generate booming bass sound...
My in-ear beats headphones that came with my Sensation XL improve the sound output on the Lumia 10 fold. it's al about the headphones.
i have an a lumia 800 since 1 week and i am also pretty disappointed by the sound quality. there is no bass, even with the update :-(
i really like the phone, but this is a no-go because i hear a lot of music. if nokia diesn`t change this, i'll switch to an apple or samsung device.
i think we're running round in circles or that different phone users have different ears. however to the suggestion above of comparin hw rev numbers, noone replied.
Okay, I have finally replaced my unit and got one that has great audio quality. The difference is massive.
It has the same hardware revision number and everything is exactly the same, the IMEI is different by about 700, so they have been built in the same production run most probably. There's no way to tell apart from plugging in your earphones and testing for yourself.
Is there anyway to manually increase some frequency values?
It's frustrating as the Lumia 800 sounds great using my Denons, but the very low frequencies are flat, very flat.
I really hope there will be some fix for this because as a whole i like the device a lot and the music experience is great. That said music to me on the phone is easily on the top 3 features so it needs to work.
I'm a first time Android user (I'm a former employee of T-Mobile so I messed around with a lot of phones so I'm not new to the Android game) and I have been a Nokia user my whole life. I bought my Amaze 2 weeks ago for 1 purpose.
My Comcast internet sucks for my Xbox Live so I bought the Amaze to use as my HotSpot. Other than that, there are pros and cons of this phone.
The phones I had previously for the past 6 years are Nokia 6680, Nokia N95, Nokia 5800, Nokia N97 and the Nokia N8. As you can see, I only used Nokia. I realized some major differences from Nokia and HTC.
The Pros:
- Beautiful, clear and vivid 4.3″ screen
- Super fast (Overclocked at 1.73GHz)
- Very durable and strong
- A built in Task Manager
- Running on T-Mobile HSPA+ 42mb network
- Can have the bootloader unlocked so you can root and install a custom ROM (do at your own risk)
The Cons:
- Original battery doesn’t last as long (Compared to my Nokia N8)
- The camera is not the greatest. I say it's a POS compared to my Nokia N8
- The sound quality in a phone call is horrible (Compared to my Nokia N8)
- The useless capacitive Search button (Waste of space)
My N8 has a better aluminum casing. It's actually scratch resistant. I never had a scratch mark on it.
I definitely miss Nokia's durability and hardware but I just wish Nokia had caught up with the market.
Now tell me what you like about your Amaze compared to your other phones. This should also help people who are looking to buy an Amaze to get a better idea of it and to hear what people have to say about it.
it is becoming annoying every prospective buyer of the amaze opening a new thread whether or not to buy the phone, what the issues are etcetc. anyways solid built phone, camera is great, screeen is awesome, battery doesnt last too long, sometimes overheats but no worries wont burn your fingers, some complain about the screen bleed but I dont find it a big deal, microphone sucks if u were to record something. thats pretty much it.
I love the qHD resolution. It's beautiful on the 4.3in screen (to be fair I loved it on the Sensation as well, still do ). The build quality is nice. I like the weight of it in my hand. It's fast, (even though I've been too lazy to unlock the bootloader...and spoiled by having true S-off on my Sensation.). I do love the camera. It seems to take brighter pics (with less noise) than my Sensation ....and I'm really happy since TMo released the WiFi calling update recently.

I bought HTC Amaze instead of HTC Sensation because of these four reasons.
-headset/Speaker loudness
-more storage/ram/cpu
-dust get into battery case through microphone.
-NFC
Right now, all of my family members are using HTC Amaze as their dash cam, Amaze have never reboot during recording even it runs real hot. I never thought this little phone able to record non-stop 1hour 1080p video
The phone was running hot but very clear enough to read license plate of passing cars with the right condition. ( due to my sh*ttty T-mobile OEM car kit )

I would have the Nokia 800 for a try, because i have heard about the beauty of the SAMOLED+ and the Lumia 800 has a 4.3-Inch screen, which is considered as big phone.
But if you want to go for Titan , it is fine too. I have bad experiences with Nokia phones so i don;t really want to use them even i know they are good. Just a personal feeling.
But i think most people would choose the Lumia 800 over Titan, since it has the better design (Higher Eye-Candy level, not sure about Build quality) , for sure a better camera, a better screen with acceptable size.
I just love a massive screen and the 2 -piece of metal design of Titan, that is why i bought it.
The lumia 800 has a 3.7 inch pentile screen. I don't know if the screen in the lumia 900 is a + panel, but the one in the lumia 800 is not.

I've had the Titan since November time, and love it. I was sceptical as it's such a big phone, and personally I'd go for 4.3 as the perfect screen / portability size, but less than 4.3 is too small, so the Titan was my only option for a gen 2 phone.
I can't fault it - the screen is brilliant, the build quality is top notch, the performance is faultless. I've played around with the Lumia in stores, and it's a nice phone, but the screen's too small, plain and simple, and without a FFC I just don't see why anyone would buy a gen 1 phone when there are several gen 2 readily available.
For me very is fault on Nokia its construction. On many forums is discussed the creaking housing after a few months of use... On Lumia 800 or N9 with the same construction...
And little display size of course, Titan´s bigger display is fantastic

Totally agree. I can't speak to the build quality of the 800 having never seen it, and while I KNOW it's superior to the Titan, that is REALLY hard for me to imagine, because the Titan is solid and beautiful to me!
Well, the Titan has just dropped to £383.99 ($592.07) on Handtec.co.uk. If it was Amazon, clove or expansys i would by now, but I've heard really mixed reviews of Handtec. Some people say its fine, but lots of people say they sent the wrong item or it was damaged or came weeks, sometimes even months late, even after paying for next day delivery. Has anyone here brought their Titan or any other phone on Handtec.co.uk? Cheers.

I came to the end of my Lumia month a few days ago, and I was grateful to get my hands back on the Titan.
The Lumia is a beautiful phone, sure. And it feels great in the hand. The USB port is just wrong, with its little flap and positioned on the top as it is. Audio on the Lumia is dreadful - there is no bottom end at all, either thru the speaker or headphones. Its all mid-hi range with no depth to any music.
And although the deep-black pentile screen on the Lumia looks good at a first glance, the reality is that you will notice the pixelation too often, and compared to the Titan there is a noticeable yellow haze across the screen. Whites are horrible in comparison. Sure, the dpi is less on the Titan, but there is no practical drawback in daily usage, and due to the pentile grid on the Lumia, the Titan actually feels better quality.
The camera on the Titan is also much better, with a ton more options than the Lumia. Lumia is OK for a cameraphone, the Titan surprises with its capability.
One area the Lumia has the edge is its power button - I like it on the side. The Titan is a BIG reach for the power button on top, and it is so flush that sometimes its fiddly to actually press it. Not cool. Why oh why can't all WP makers have the windows button wake up the phone, as LG have done on the Optimus?!
Nokia has tried to bring value with its Drive/Music/Maps apps...but can't say I miss them. gMaps pro does it all, and POIs on google seem to be better and more current. If Nokia shared with Bing maps, it would be a powerful rival, I guess...
Nokia Drive is kind of cool, but really, you can't add/edit POIs, you still need a data connection for routing...if this is your reason for buying the Lumia, go with the Titan and buy Turn-by-Turn instead.
Nokia Music is so-so, nothing that MarketPlace doesn't offer except the gig guide and Mix Radio. Gigs can be searched and Mix Radio...well Spotify anyone? Or even SmartDJ and ZunePass. I guess the advantage of Mix Radio is that it's free but its not a deal breaker for me.
I am still waiting for 8107 updates on both devices, so the jury is out on which has better update support at the moment.
I certainly get more comments on the Lumia's beauty as a design, but people are more overwhelmed with the sheer gargantuan impressiveness of the Titan. I then invite people to try it in the pocket and the reaction is always the same..."wow its like its not even there"...the Titan is so slim, its size is irrelevant.
The Titan battery is far superior to the Lumia. Yeah I am still waiting on "battery fix" from Nokia, but the Titan has it for me, no sweat. I can easily manage a whole day with my usage pattern, whereas the Lumia I need a charger by mid-afternoon. I went away for a weekend and didn't use the phone, but it lasted from 4pm Friday to 7pm Sunday with 20% remaining for calls/txts on the way home. That is what a phone should do!
So yeah, my Mum gets the Lumia, I will keep the Titan

hope they send you the right phone. I ordered the titan car kit from handtec a few weeks ago. They sent me the docking cradle and were rubbish trying to sort it out. I ended up cancelling the order but at least they didn't want the cradle back after first insisting I return it at my expense!

Good choice mate. Moving over from android to titan and liking it so far but missing the apps. Still got the sensation XL just in case.

It did! And its f***ing awesome. I love it so far. Camera is great, screen is beautiful, no lag at all (which I had quite a bit of on the omnia 7), very good battery life so far. Its on charge atm so using my galaxy nexus and I have to admit the nexus' screen is far superior, but that's the only thing about it that is. It took ages to download my emails, check my twitter/Facebook/forums and send a few texts. Thanks for everyone's opinions !

So I've been looking all over the internets for good audio quality comparisons between all sorts of different phones and media players (just for the fun of it). I wanted to buy a nice pair of affordable headphones and to see which mp3 would let me get the best sound quality and user experience out of them. After a lot of research (approximately 5 days) I ended up getting the Koss PortaPros for a discounted price off amazon (and yes they are genuine). The sound quality is a real upgrade over most headphones I'v used for a period longer than a couple of days (Iv used Bose IE8, the pathetic Dr Dres, Senheisser HD280s, and the Grados S60s) .
But one thing kept bugging me. Everytime I have looked around for reviews on the Nokia 800's sound quality through headphones, all I'v heard is either complaints, even after the 12070 update, or people saying that the sound quality is mediocre at best. I do not consider myself an audiophile or an expert, but i tried my hand at this in any case.
I took out my Sansa Clip+, the Nokia E5 (that I had been using as my mp3 player even though I used the Desire S as my daily driver before the Lumia because of the ease of searching music and sound quality) and compared it with the Lumia with the Koss PortaPros, JVC Marshmellows and the Creative EP630s.
Now I listen to most of everything I can get my hands onto. There was a whole lot of Lana Del Rey, Drake and YMCMB, Guns N Roses, Coldplay, Ellie Goulding, Gotye and of course Nujabes. All my music is 320kbps .mp3. I'm not an expert or anything so please feel free to correct me where ever you think I'v made a mistake or said something wrong. Everything I heard was on the default equalisers with no effects on.
The Nokia E5.
Now according to GSMarena, the E5 has the cleanest output they've heard in a long time and audio quality is generally great. Putting on the JVCs and the EP630s, the E5 actually sounds pretty good. Its clean, its got that clean unmuddled thump and the mids are as good as those cheap headphones can deliver. The problem occurs when you put on the Koss. The sound widens up but it feels like its lacking somewhere. You can hear the vocals clearly but its cold and dull. As though theres a part of the song missing.
Sansa Clip+
Technically I should be using this as my main mp3 player if I really care about sound quality. The sound through these in every category, be it Bass heavy or adult alternative was better than the E5. They were louder, wider and i could here each and every instrument separately, they were bassier and the clarity was top notch. But going through a list of 800 songs on that tiny screen gives you a right headache. For what its worth, this is a winner right here.
Nokia Lumia 800
Now technically this should have the worst sound quality out of the lot. Its been dissed publicly, and the first post you get when you google its sound quality is a post on the Nokia forums talking about its disastrous sound quality through low impedance headphones before the 12070 update, and some even after it. Now listening through the JVCs and the EP630s it is clear as day. The Nokia Lumia 800 was never targeted to be used as a dedicated mp3 by anyone who cares about sound quality. The sound was just bassless and muffled. Not as bad as my Nokia C2, but quite bad. I felt disappointed until I listened to the same songs using the Koss PortaPros. I couldnt believe how good things sounded. Ellie Goulding's Home, Drake's Miss Me, Nujabes' Song of Four Seasons and Foster The People's Helena Beat. All of them sounded The Best I'd ever heard them. Now I dont know how. Or why. They sounded rounded, warm and nothing over the top but still really good. Listening to the same songs again on the Sansa Clip+ should have removed the placebo effect, but it was clear. The Sansa had better stereo separation and a wider sound, but the Lumia sounded better (to me) with more detail in the lows, very very good unmuddled bass (the sansa was bassier but it felt almost overpowering with the Koss), and clear vocals with it. The sansa Clip was alot louder on the highest volume setting but if you dont want to blow your ears ff, the Lumia does a commendable job. Plus the interface on Zune is miles better than anything that tiny screen can offer.
Now if I had my iTouch which I recently sold I wouldve loved to compare it with the Lumia as well, but the Sansa Clip+ sounds better than the iTouch so thats not a big problem. I would love to hear people who have Sony walkmans or Cowon's media players to make comparisons though.
Have you guys ever compared the sound on different media players or different headsets? Noone ever discusses the Lumia series as a media player. This might help. Please feel free to correct me and add your own experiences.

Before I got my Lumia 800, I had a Samsung Nexus S, and I can clearly tell that the Lumia 800 is the inferior media player. The main reason is not even the sound quality, but the fact that there's no equalizer settings on the Lumia 800. That, and it doesn't support FLAC. There's no such thing as Voodoo Sound either.
The sound quality itself is not bad at all on Lumia 800, but it's WAAAAAY worse than the Nexus S. Obviously because the Nexus S had a God-tier Wolfson DAC.

I'm selling my Z5 Compact under MM. The decision was hard because I kinda love the fingerprint but...
The battery is a complete joke, it doesn't last a day compared to my old Z3C which is far more better in everything,
The device gets warm and hot all the time, in any application I go (I have no games and I mostly use Google apps and Telegram)

I'm going to take back my good old Z3 Compact which is far more better.

Before the MM update - yes, I felt the same. Since MM and the newest update mine has been great.
If it weren't for z3c side charging I would have never chosen the z5c. I'm holding onto mine for a bit longer until this HTC mini, s7 mini, and xiaomi mini release. Front facing speakers are keeping me from downgrading back to a mini Samsung for the time being.
And as far as battery life and heat issues I'm right on the same page. I've adapted to it for now by quick charging at lunch time to get me through the work day and clipping phone to me so I'm not burning myself in my pocket.
I am thinking about doing that too, but there are 2 things that keeping me from that, fingerprint sensor and camera! I don't know what to do, wait for S7 Mini,go for S7, wait for SONY to maybe fix issues of this phone or what else?
I think if only this phone had 3GBs of RAM we had no problem or even SONY used good old Snapdragon 801!
i had drain and heat problem until i shutoff 4G, now (3G.5HPSA) only dosnt need really need fast internet
now my phone is 40-90 hours average use , instand 12-30

I am quite happy with the phones performance and battery life since MM, but I have now preordered the HTC10 and my neighbour is already waiting to buy the Z5C from me. If the HTC10 is as good as I beleive it is, I can overlook the fakt that I hate big phones in this case. Ive been a very happy HTC owner since the HD2 and lastly the M7. The Z5C is a great phone to me, but it will never be more than that. HTC usually managed to float my boat just that tiny bit better than the other brands

I used to be a big HTC fan until they went to the one series. They are supposedly bring an h10 mini out with flagship specs this year. Hopefully they don't disappoint like the last two minis, I want to go HTC again.

you know the HTC 10 has not stereo speakers anymore? only dual speakers one (lower) for bass and for top on high pitch
Z5C is kind the same thing BUT! still stereo , Z5C top speaker wave range of 150hz-22050KHz and bottom speaker is 500HZ-22050Khz (less bass)

Dude, I dont care about that stuff. If I want to listen to music I get me a proper stereo and speakers or headphones. Any cellphone speaker sounds horrible.
What kind of personality disorders do people have these days to need a stabilized photosensor for selfies? Is a look in the mirror in the morning not good enough anymore? Million megapixels cellphone cameras still make crappy pictures in comparison to any 100€ camera Ive gotten my hands on.
Marketing makes us beleive that we need so many things in our cellphones, but in the end they usualy cant to one thing great.
I bought the Z5C because it was the only product available that offered highclass specs in a small phone. I dont like the design of it, the picture quality, speaker sound quality, sony customizations...you name it. Its a good phone for what it is. A phone. Snappy performance and 2 days on a charge make me a happy user.
The HTC10 is not compact, which I am not happy about, but it has a beautiful design and HTC Sense. Apparently it also has better sound quality if you connect good headphones to it and I like to listen to music with the best possible quality. This is an archievable goal in a phone btw...dslr picture quality isnt!
If someone builds a phone with the size of the Z5C (or even smaller), 1080p resolution, aluminium body/looks like the HTC One series, happily dumps the selfy camera and top-spec hardware, but little to no changes to stock android, then I buy that phone in a heartbeat.
The complete contrast for me is Samsung now. Make it huge, put useless features on it and customize it to the max. Full throttle marketing bull**** in my mind, but people seem to love it.

yup also one of the reason i bought this phone because its small, my previous phone was 3.5" sony with walkman WT19 , so even this one abit big for me, lol..
im mostly disappointed of
1.camera lens (plastic) can scartch easly and can ruin the shots
2.photos are noisy\blurry even with good light ,
3.phone heating fast, (even low end apps or, even 4G signal; if high end apps like asphalt 8 in 2mins its 50c\120F)
4.when phone get hotter it become slower ,
5.speakers are uneven and weak , loudspeaker awful, my previous phone was 4times louder didnt need it use of bluetooth in car, now i need...
6.didnt came with quickcharge QC adapter
7.didnt came with in-ear headphones
8.update the phone to MM make it worse battery and lags,camera*, didnt upgrade it yet*
still pretty fast phone with nice battery but not worth the price (mine cost about 800 US$ when i bought it)
My only problems with the phone are:
some hick-ups during normal operations
overheating
average camera
poor system customization options
Otherwise the phone is perfect. The battery is great, I've recently lasted two days (~10% when going to sleep on the 2nd day) with automatic brightness and 24h sync with mobile data, some sms and a few calls, I even played some Hearthstone on a bus. The battery seems to have problems on certain units.
