[Q] Dropped my Galaxy S3 and need help choosing what to buy - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Need help
i just dropped from my bed my Galaxy and the ultra mighty gorila glass cracked but the touch and the screen are fine, no leaks or whatever, i just need to know what i have to buy to fix this mess
i found the digitizer LCD Display and Touch Screen not included that cost $18 dollars
or the full lcd touch combo that cost $239 dollars
as i said the touch is 100% working and the lcd doesnt have any leaks
i have searched similar topics but the other cases have broke lcd
thanx in advance :good:

Just found this video, i think im going to buy only the glass, the other solution is to expensive with 239 dollars i can get a new s3 with my mobile plan

So sorry for your phone man. I guess since the touch still works you will only need the front glass. To be honest i'm looking forward to see the answer of your question, since i never understood properly how the digitizer and the front glass work. Always thought they were the same.
Seeing images like of your phone is the reason why i bought my UAG case.

What is it with Galaxy S3`s and so meny people dropping them and smashing there screens.
I have had my GS3 for quite a wile now and not a single drop or scratch.... are they really that slippery lol

You will need to buy them both. I have completed this repair numerous times for friends and family, and the digitizer will break close to 99% of the time.
I do consider myself very tedious and patient, but it is glued to the screen and there's a pretty slim chance of it coming off in one piece.
You can heat it up and try to get it as soft as possible, but it's super sticky.
Do yourself a favour and buy them both or else you're going to be waiting for a digitizer to come once you've started the repair process.
Hope this helps.

They are big, too big for a phone I've decided and they like to slip out of pockets and what not. I've decided I'm going smaller next time.

nah, P800 was an old phone, at that time the glass was more delicate, at that time i was working on backstage production, and you got to run sometimes, but you know i use to own a samsung vibrant and i did drop that phone a lot also handle a lot of stress, the glass never broke, i loved that phone

The newer supposed "thinner and stronger" Gorilla Glass thst is on S3 is nowhere near as scratch and crack resistant as the thicker original on phones like the OG Epic. This one can get those hairline scratches much easier thsn the original. Dont try the key scratch test on the S3. I will say this though, i have 2 i9300s. One new in box and the one i use has the back cover with the white flap that covers the screen. I dropped it 2x from 4 feet on concrete and only a slight scuff on the silver side bezel

Yeah I know what you mean. If that's the case and you can hold off for another few weeks, let's see what Google releases. Could be worth the wait as it might be an upgrade compared to the GS3.

It's the design of the gs3! The glass not only stands above the frame it's curved at the edges
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

Guys, for real, why does everyone think that gorilla glass is crack resistant? I mean, than bigger a screen gets than easier it can break, this is physics...
Gorilla glass more about to be scratch-resistant.
and in the case of OP I would buy a new screen and then be more careful with my phone. I just got a cheap silicon case and it protects my phone from everything without needing a screen protector.

I'd buy the digitizer for $18, worst case LCD breaks whilst separating and you'll need to buy the complete unit. Best case you fix it and save yourself $225 on complete unit.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

From my personal experience, i'd say you'd better buy the complete unit with the glass, the digitalizer and lcd pre-assembled on the frame. I've bougth a 2 week old GT-i9300 from a friend who had dropped it and had also the problem with the sim card blocked inside and just broke the sim card reader to take it out... As i said, i've managed to have it at a really good price and bought the lcd unit (samsung original on e-bay) and believe me, you will save yourself a lot of work as the gorilla glas is glued to the digitalizer witch is also part of the oled screen, witch makes it almost impossible to take the gorilla glass without breaking the rest, or, even if you manage to get it out, you'll never glue it again without any air trapped between the two... just look on ebay, i found mine for 163€.

I have the same problem as the OP. Dropped my SGS III couple of days ago and screen cracked though I still have 100% touch screen functionality. I am planning to get it fixed though have to say that incident has made me lose confidence in the sgs3. My sgs2 was such a solid piece of abuse taker. Over one year of use and dropping on concrete and worse on a number of occasion all without a scratch. Right now I am considering the HTC One X maybe it's using the old guerilla glass which seems more durable.

Case though not as ot of the Armor variations.. Might want to also add that the galaxy s2 used naked for all of a year. The latter device puts guerilla in guerrilla glass

Hey guys,
I woke up this morning to check my alarm and i got so shocked that i fully woke up. I noticed a small crack below the home buttom. I have NO IDEA how it happened. I would appreciate any expert opinion if this would be covered under Samsung warranty.
Thanks

It's my understanding if you are willing to pay you can return it. I know if you were on Verizon you could return the phone within the first month and then "repurchase" the exact same device.
On a side note, there has to be something horribly wrong with Gorilla Glass 2. I foresee a recall coming...

Do you have any evidence of that? From the video's and articles I read about the s3 and gorilla glass (2) there is nothing wrong with it. The new design of the S3 (thin bezzle) makes is more "fragile" but also smaller, lighter and more usable in one hand.
So rather get a bumper / case (like many iPhone users have been forced to do)...
I have just been following this site and several others in my spare time and it seems like a lot of breakage for GG2. Considering the stuff is supposed to be stronger than its predecessor, it doesn't seem to be handling the abuse (or most cases lack there of) too well.
@op

Wow that sucks! But definitely looks like it fell. I dont think its just gorilla glass 2 tho, the build of this device is just not as solid as the s2. I even managed to scratch the paint on the bottom white button on the first day using the S3. Thought it was dust and then when i realized it was chipped paint i was pretty furious at myself!

Cracked screen issue
I purchased S3 for myself and have had it for 2 weeks with no issues. My wife saw the phone and said she wanted one as well. So, I ordered it. We received it, charged it, and then activated the phone. She put it back on the charger before she went to bed. Got up in the morning put it in her padded phone pouch in her purse and ran to the store. She went to call me from the store and noticed a crack in the screen from the earpiece to volume button on the phone. She said she did not drop or bang it on anything. Needless to say she returned the phone no questions asked by AT&T and bought the iPhone 4S instead because she did not want to have to worry about the screen breaking for no apparent reason. The one thing I did notice on her S3 was where the screen meets the case. There seemed to be a glass grit or dust in the crack around 2/3 rds of the perimeter screen. My S3 did not have that.

Dropped my galaxy s3 screen cracked what are my options?

Jumping out my truck in a rush with s3 in hand it slipped and fell flat on the screen. Screen cracked right in the middle all the way through ... Is my only option to buy a new phone
Ouch.
Its repairable but its an expensive repair as entire screen + digitizer assembly needs to be replaced.
Parts are available: http://cnn.cn/shop/samsung-i9300-galaxy-c-26_1412.html
You might want to ask local Samsung repair centre for paid repair quote. Might be very close to the cost of part and might make better sense to get it done through Samsung directly.
didnt you use a case or screen guard? if so you did a big mistake you can take it for samsung service center and ask them to replace it, but they will charge for sure..

No, you have to replace the screen... there's a video on youtube how to dismantle SGS3.
Or, you could probably still get $400 for it on eBay. (If you're not the type who attempts to repair things on your own...)
Man I feel for you. I dropped my phone yesterday, it landed on it's face and has marks on the screen. The first thing I done was phone my insurance company and swap the details from my old s2 to this one .. I know I will do it again .

just another opinion. of course if its non functioning that option isnt there lol
Damn s3 so breakable. I remember when i had s2 and note, it felt from my hands a lot of times and no scratches or broken display
I got a Squaretrade warranty for mine -- $69 for a year and covers accidental damage. (Doesn't cover loss or theft though...). They also charge a 99 dollar deductible, but that's still better than the almost $700 I paid for it to begin with.
A quick reminder, buying insurance on something after damaging it, then using the insurance to repair it *is* fraud, which is illegal, don't get us in trouble m'kay!

the important question is who is the lovely lady?
SGS2 & SGS3 screen
Samsung used the Gorilla Glass for SGS2. But for SGS3, they used the Gorilla Glass 2 which is much thinner than on SGS2 that's why it's easily breaks. For me, I will stay on my SGS2.
looks like i'll be buying a case for mine seeing all these posts about screen breakage. but until I find the right case, at least i have 90 days of lost & damage protection from Amex!

Screen damage is not the end of the world.......i have been looking at tear downs for the SGS3 and they are pretty basic, even replacing the screen ( which will prob end up costing where abouts of 249 dollars) but that over trashing a new device. i have dropped my sgs3 3 times in the last week and the silver bumper looks Hella Ratty, but my screen is perfect.
i am going to buy a replacement screen as the housing and the screen are joined together, or else i would really need to do some heat gun and gental pulling of the screen to get it out of the housing. but its not hard yall.
if your screen is cracked and you dont have warranty, maybe a screen is the way to go. all you need is small screw driver and a flat metal/plastic peice to pull of the board connections.

Google translate can make it up for you...
I dropped mine this morning very much like they did on Android Authority and it had an Incipio Sylicrilic case. The phone fell with the screen hitting a hard granite floor first and I wasn't worried because of the case. I spent a couple of weeks with the phone dangling around between change and keys and lots of things in my pockets and it didn't show a single scratch yet. If you use a kind of bumper that dissipates some energy you will be fine mate.
testamony......lol
now up to 7 drops....all waist height and above. the screen is scratchless and crackless
now the silver bumper.....thats a different story, it looks like a phone i have had for OVER a year.
oh yea, NO CASES or Screen Protectors are on my phone.
i have been VERY IMPRESSED with the glass
i have had the s1 2 and 3 (the s2 being the most durable). The s3 definitely needs a case in my opinion, unless of course you never drop your phone. It only takes one awkward bounce on a solid surface for it to shatter.
The weakest point on the S3 screen is the glass under the home button, it`s very thin and narrow, and can be broken just by pressing the home button area a little too hard.
John.
Thank you all guys!
You are a great help!!
So this TPU case i got should be okay?
I heard the TPU cases are very good energy absorbers...
Put it this way, the S3 uses Gorilla Glass 2 which is thinner yet supposedly more durable. In my ecoerience I have never had a Gorilla Glass display break on me, but that's certainly not to say one wouldn't, i've just been lucky.

Obviously when people drop their phone they gonna be pissed off and some are gonna make a lot of noise about how bad the phone is, but the fact is the first month of S1 and S2 were exactly the same so right now it's hard to tell if it's got really bad glass or just really pissed off customers.

One fall from desk height, 2 feet on something hard, that's all it took for me. I had an HTC 2 years. That would not have broken. The thing is extremely easy to break! Incredibly easy, in fact.
1 drop from waist height was all it took to kill my s3, small crack in the bottom left hand corner and screen wont even turn on, and no touch input.
This was really disappointing for me, my s1 and s2 have both been through a million times more. It's one of the reasons i love samsung phones.
They don't break. I was really disappointed by the s3. I'm back to abusing my s2 now with a really pretty brick on my desk.
I was going to get the note II but considering its basically a larger s3 I'm guessing the durability will be just as poor

Had my phone for 5 days, while shopping for a case, dropped it 1 foot onto floor, shattered the glass to pieces. It's off to Samsung for repairs, not sure how much $$$ it's gonna cost to repair, and also I have now lost my warranty due to breaking the glass, so hopefully the phone doesn't crap out in the next 3 years of my contract. Oh and btw, I had an S1 with a cheapy case, dropped many times, no cracks whatsoever, so I truly believe the glass is much weaker. My suggestion would be to get a case, but which one is going to protect it, I am very concerned now.

I got a deep scratch on my phone. What can I do?

I had a droid x that I had in my pocket with heavy knives, keys, coins, etc and only got those very small scratches where you could only see them if it was held in the light at the correct angle. I've had this phone for less than a week and it has a deep scratch that my fingernail can grab onto.
Should I attempt an exchange? I know it's ultimately my fault...but do I have options? I have insurance but I'm looking for a freebie or cheapie.
screen protectors are cheap but I hear time machines are pretty costly.

Something that can go through Gorilla Glass won't be stopped by a flimsy screen protector. It would have made no difference.
Not a lot you can do. Some people say putting a screen protector over a scratch can hide it some extent.
Replacing the screen on the cheap is out of the question. It's basically attatched to another part which means you have to replace two parts.
I don't have a screen protector, starting to think I should!

Of course a screen protector should have helped. Just a tiny bit of sand can ruin the screen completely. With a screen protector just it should have been wasted and not the screen

Same here, I take real care of my mobiles. My old i9000 doesn't even sport one scratch after two years while the i9300s screen is littered with them. Not really sure why though, but I think it might be the flip cover. (tiny bit of sand on it and bye bye screen)
Right now I am not too bothered with it, I'm going to get the screen replaced in two weeks.

I was wondering too if it was weaker on the SGS3 but probably not. I was hoping they had some sort of fix for scratches. I know clear nail polish will remove a scratch on glass albeit temporary. I may see how that works. It still baffles me though that 2 years and no scratches on the droid x and 3 days and I got a nice deep one on this newer phone. I guess I just had bad luck.
For the person who wrote about fraud...you're a douche. Verizon had no problem downgrading me from unlimited after I upgraded well before the expiration. I did get that back with a phone call, but they had no problem attempting fraud. If there was a known minor issue with the first release phones you bet I would try to work that into getting a new one and pretend as if the flaw was affecting my usage. I know that's a stretch but there are some smart people on this forum who can think of just about anything.

Not a lot you can do. Some people say putting a screen protector over a scratch can hide it some extent.
Replacing the screen on the cheap is out of the question. It's basically attatched to another part which means you have to replace two parts.
I don't have a screen protector, starting to think I should!

Yes applying a screen protector will hide scratches,I have them in my phone,I was very careful with my phone and I got them! I put a screen protector and you can't see them, yes it makes the phone not look that great but it's better then scratches!

Your argument is that this should not be happening on gorilla glass, especially not on 3rd gen glass. It's a faulty glass, some of the white ones had bad gorilla glass and was easy scratched.i have never used a screen cover and never had a scratch (2 sgs,2 gs2 +1 gs3) over 2 year period.
and it should be replaced be the phone warrenty and not the insurance.
This is your argument,if they eat it or not that depends.
Do you think I could exchange my 16gb phone for a 32gb phone? Just say I want the bigger one. I'm still within the exchange dates correct?
They are going to say it's not scratch proof

Scratched my screen pretty badly :(

Hey Guys,
I scratched my notes's screen a bit in the middle in 2-3 spots while going camping. Looking at the phone makes me want to flush it down the drain!
I called bell and told them i had all kind of issues and they told me that they do not do any exchanges, they send phones to Samsung and they decide if the phone gets repaired or exchanged.
So my question is , did any of you deal with samsung repair center and did they send you a refurbished phone, or your same phone with scratches all over the place?

Well u cannot lie and say that u have all these issues especially when u clearly don't and only want a new one cuz of your screen. Its called a screen protector and a otter box. That's your own fault and if u lied to them about issues they will try to duplicate the issues and will only attempt to fix anything they may see. Quite pathetic to lie to get a new one cuz u weren't prepared for your adventure .

you can put a protector on the screen now and hide most of the scratches.. i bought a phone and the seller did this.. very very hard to tell, but with the protector off substantial scratch..

Ditto that. A Zagg screen should fill in the scratches and make them almost invisible and prevent further scratches. Also, comes with a lifetime warranty.
I've dealt with Samsung warranty over charging port/cable issues and they sent me a new device rather than a refurb. I retained my own S-Pen, Battery, and sim card. You can send them your phone for whatever reason you want, but once they get it and realize that you just wanted a new device cause you scratched your screen they will most likely charge you for the device.
I agree that you've really got to look at yourself as the cause of the problem. You could have gotten a quality screen protector for minimal cash, and if you can afford the phone and service you can afford to protect it.
Why even take your phone camping? You should never take a phone like the Note camping with you. Keep a backup flip phone and slide your sim in while your camping. People camp to get away from the world not to bring it with them. Also if your gonna cheat Samsung cause you made a mistake and messed your screen up, you will probably never learn your lesson. Buy another Note or deal with your mistake after all Samsung did nothing wrong. Its your fault not theirs. Not only is it lame and dishonest its a crime to scam for free property. Scratched phones are not covered with warranty, but real malfuntions are so I guess your outta luck.

wow, this thread has gone out of proportion! Lets put some facts clear :
1. I did not post a complete post as i was really tired and sleepy ( sorry about that )
2. I am having LTE connectivity issues and 50% drop calls on LTE. we changed SIM cards already and Bell told me to get my phone repaired
3. I got Some pink screens about 10 times in total which worried me. Got them on stock GB, on Perfection ICS Leaks, and on Stock ICS
4. I always had a screen protector, but had few issues with it. It got dirty on the top part next to the front camera, and it had all kind of lines because of the s-pen ( I guess they sold me the wrong type of screen protector as this one sucks! )
I endured it for 6 months but got fed up and ordered a Spigen Glas.t from eBay. I got fed-up of the screen protector meanwhile and i took it off last weekend. Since then ive been scratching my phone all the time, in my pockets, with quarters or keys, or plastic cards!!!This gorilla screen is not really good on the Note.
Anyways sorry for the confusion, hope i cleared out everything.

Just because it's gorilla glass doesn't change the fact that you're careless. I don't use a screen protector either, but then again my note always has a dedicated pocket. Gorilla glass isn't diamond, if something has a higher hardness rating, it will scratch the screen. Plain and simple. Pay for the repair or get a screen protector to fill the scratches in. It's your fault. Samsung will replace phones for manufacturers defects, but the screen scratches will take precedence over the other issues, as those aren't manufacturers defects. Take it as a lesson learned, you pay for expensive ****, so take care of it like it's expensive ****.

Gorilla glass is very weak. The only screens I have scratched or broke were gorilla glass.
For $200 Samsung will replace your front glass, LCD, and digitizer. It is one unit. They will fix your other issues for free by flashing a basic stock rom and recovery, then see if you have bad hardware. It will take ten days. Call them.
