[Q]How to mount a system folder to seperate partition - Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Pro

I'm having a big question in mind can we mount a specific system folder in to a SD Card
So that we can available more space for the ROM
Like we can mount a dalvik-cache folder to a SD-Card so we can have more space available to our ROM so does more free internal memory.
Because this is a Linux concept we do implement it in our servers whenever we r running out of space.
So this shud b possible to our ROM's if yes, then how?
If not then why not?

Well the system partition is a bit different to my knowledge, it's mounted on read-only memory, hence ROM. I personally think it would either brick a device or the ROM just won't run.
What we can do is symlink less important parts of our ROM to save more space. For example: symlinking pittpatt binaries to /data is a common practice, because those are around 25MB.
Anyways I might be wrong on any of this, but you're bringing up a pretty interesting question.

Ok... Friend bt I really dont have any idea about symlinks in android bt I got the message u want to convey.
And according to my knowledge there is no significance of ROM in it may b u r confusing with Read Only Memory and we call our OS a ROM bcz a OS system image is stored every tym in Read Only Memory for recovery as we did it through Factory Reset System.
In my knowledge OS(ROM) files we use in our device r read nd WRITE almost every tym when its running so it should not brick our device in anyway if we do it correctly.
If my knowledge is wrong plz correct me, anyone is kindly welcome

Not sure about actually mounting folders as you say, but there are plenty of apps to symlink to the SD card.
i use link2sd (Free in the market) to "move" data for all my apps to the sd card...saves a ot of space

The theory is sound, it should be feasible, as long as the kernel can access the folder at boot time, start there.

I'm an average Android user and I have always heard of "CyanogenMod". Now in the development section "CyanogenMod 7.1-cooper-KANG-RC1 Android 2.3.7" is available. From your experience, what are the pros and cons? Is everything working? What are the languages supported (to write and view). What are the advantages over the official Samsung ROM? Thanks in advance!

use link2sd far better and saves more internal memory !
Don't use Apps2SD....just the built in move to SD card function.
I mean i tried link2sd and a2sd on my old acer liquid metal.
But a2sd giving me more free space.
Thats why i m forcing for that.
I want to use my ext partition, so cant use defauld 'move to sd function'
.
So, plz just tell me or give me link for any tutorial.

Working fine
I've tried darktremor's a2sd script on my neo. Use a2sdgui from market, after u flash the script. It is the 'graphical user interface', easier to use. But got bootloop whenever i tried to move or recreate dalvik cache to 2nd partition. That why i prefer link2sd more.

AFAIK you can use "link2sd", you just need your phone rooted, a partition [ext(2/3/4)], and of course a FAT partitition too. There're guides over there, so, yes, it's possible in stock and rooted!
only apk files and dalvik cache are transfered using Link2sd.
What i want is the data partition are linked to sd.

lets see about this.
Been looking for some good GB ROMs for my Neo V. This definitely looks interesting. Thank you OP.
Update
I installed this ROM and I really liked it. It seemed smoother than the current GB ROM I'm using. Unfortunately, I couldn't get Link2SD, nor S2E, to work. For Link2SD it appears that CM cannot recognize an ext4 partition. And Link2SD was always complaining it could not get root permission. Tried S2E instead. But no matter how many apps I installed it seemed to all be eating up the Internal space, leaving the SD space untouched. I had gotten S2E to work on CM10. Don't know what I'm doing wrong here. So here ends my experiment with this ROM.

You must have your BootLoader unlocked, go to dialpad and press *#*#SERVICE#*#* and system info and root status, you must have the message "Bootloader unlock allowed: Yes" If you have it, only google "Unlock bootloader sony Xperia" and go to the official page and follow the steps.
If says "Bootloader unlock allowed:no" you must do a Test Point procedure, @yuxandyou done in Fastgsm.com for just 10$ (it removes simlock too) and they have a video explaining the process

Thank you for the suggestion. So I tried to install CM7.3 again today.
I plugged my phone's SD card into the computer and used MiniTool Partition to delete the EXT4 partition and create a new EXT3 partition. Returned the SD card to the phone and installed CM7.3.
Now, the main problem was I could not mount the 2nd SD partition (EXT3) no matter what I tried (eg. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1971689). That means I could not get Link2SD to work.
Changed the EXT3 SD partition back to EXT4 and restored a nandroid backup. If it ain't broke...
I think CM7.X has problems mounting 2nd SD partitions.
Just my feedback.

[DEVS] JB on Locked Bootloader [Building Ramdizk][W.I.P]

ANDROID RAMDIZK FOR JB ON XPERIA U
Hi all, my purpose is to create a mount point for the android system jb, according to knowledge, with modifications you can start ramdizk latest android on the same kernel.
ACCORDING TO MY EXPERIENCE IN JB ICS AND LIBRARIES USED FOR THE SAME IN THIS CASE MALI400 GPU, so it's nothing to make forced changes in the kernel.
What you need to do is make changes to the ramdizk.
You can obtain these files from a jb kernel and extract the ramdizk creating mount points for the start of the software ...
I invite you to participate and contribute to achieving ramdizk, I'm working on this ...
IN X8 SECTION, IS POSSIBLE BOOT ANDROID 2.2 AND 2.3 ON STOCK KERNEL WITH MODIFICATIONS ON RAMDIZK
Based on some reference books I read, an Android system starts up in following main steps:
CPU reads a hard-coded address which usually points to some bootloader program
The bootloader initializes the RAM, puts basic hardware in a quiescent state, loads the the kernel and RAM disk, and jumps to the kernel.
start_kernel() initializes subsystems and proceeds to call the init function of built-in drivers.
The kernel mount its root system (from ramdisk.img).
init.rc is then called to set up the environment variables such as system path, mount other filesystems, start native daemons and so on.
Now, to answer your question: "Is it possible to mount a ramdisk in Android before the Android framework starts, but after the underlying Linux kernel has started?" -- I think this is exactly what android did.
INITS
The fixes required for ramdisk.tar :
init.rc file should have 2 parts from original sony init.rc that are marked as #SEMC
add original init.delta.rc and init.delta.sh from sony or one of my ramdisks, those are responsible for service declarations.
THIS IS A KERNEL FOR GB, ICS AND JB NAA KERNEL
Ramdizk Inector tool
INIT FOR JB HERE
IM ALREADY HAVE THE ROM... IM NEED BOOTIMG FROM JB... ONLY INITS AND COMPILE THIS... WE CAN USE ATIS RAMDISK AS A BASE
