Stock-Samsung ROM i.e touchwiz
AOSP-Android Open Source Project, this is the pure form of Android that comes pre-installed in all Nexus devices.
AOKP-Android Open Kang Project, based off AOSP but with few more additions/features.
Sent from my GT-I9300

Its all in the stickies thread .
jje

Addition to previous posts:
AOSP: Pure android
AOKP: more customization
Stock: CrapWiz (some may like it)
I prefer AOSP based roms because they are the way Google intended android to be, but no other rom than stock (or stock based) will have samsung features like smartstay.

You can try modified stock rom: have all default options + can add another features

First time on the NS

I want to build a rom from AOSP for the Nexus S, I am a beginner and this will be my first rom. I see many current Roms have tweaks already setup like ram optimization and speed enhancements. Is there a central place to find these or are they all developed individually? I would like to add some of those to speed up my ROM.
What is the standard way to include tweaks like that? I obviously don't want to go and steal someone's work so here I am asking.
Thanks for the help experts!

My custom rom compiled from the source cyanogenmod 9 ICS 4.0.4 for u8650 GSM
Unofficial CM9 LuckyIcsGsm 4.0.4 ---> google....
OMG!!! Thank you soo much! its amazing!
but I have two problems
1. The call volume is really quiet on the loudest setting, and loudspeaker doesnt work well.
2. Mobile data dosent work, pages just load forever and never actually open.
Other than that, its an amazing rom
Hi
I have posted my custom rom here on xda ----> the link Here
Only hardware bug is Photocamera and Video.....
Beta 5 with bluetooth fixed and other.....
Since i'm new here i can't post on the LuckICSgsm thread, but i'd like to point out these bugs:
1. Can't send SMS to groups
2. Many times incoming calls don't show the caller's name
3. Can't dial frequent numbers (from the frequent numbers tab)
Fix these and the camera and the ROM will be the best out there for this phone, truly outstanding, way better than stock, way faster and stable than any other custom ones out there

I'm using a super stable rom "LunarBasic", never crashed, never restart
cyanogen mod 7.2
android 2.3.7
Launcher is slightly slow, animations aren't as smooth and gapps must be installed separately, these are basically the cons

It's stable and all but overall really slow, i'm using GGR next gen with 360 launcher which is a lot faster, the only downside to me is having the settings in a widget and not in the pull down toggle
here is the link:

Been using it for a week or so, and so far so good, never crashed and everything works perfect

[Q] Would I need a touchwiz based rom to best use the camera

I have been using a rooted IncS for more than a year now and finally want to make the switch from HTC to Samsung. One of the biggest drawbacks for me when using a rooted IncS was that I had to use a Sense based ROM to maximise the my camera experience. I understand some .apk relating to the camera has not been released by HTC hence AOKP/ASOP ROMs are unable to offer the same camera experience as Sense ROM.
My question is whether the same restrictions apply to a Samsung phone and would I be required to use a touchwiz based rom to best utilise my camera? Or would I be able to get the same camera experience in AOKP/ASOP ROMs.
I did try looking for an answer but was unable to locate one. In the event I missed out on it and end of repeating this question I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

Unfortunately there's not one single AOSP/AOKP rom on the S3 that functions properly due to undocumented Exynos platform and partially working (or not working) hwcomposer. There are always glitches in the camera, when switching front to back and lack of support for modes that you have in stock firmwares like hdr, hires panorama mode etc. Stick to stock if you need your phone's full functionality. If you can live with some basic apps force closing try the newest CM10 nightly you shouldn't be too disappointed.

[Q] How to chose between roms?

Hello everybody,
since i am new to android roms, i found the amount of available roms pretty overwhelming, just making it harder for me to choose one that could fit my needs.
I was searching for a feature comparison of the (or some) available roms, something like a table or so, but i wasnt able to find one. Is there something (regularly) updated like this out there?
It would be very nice, if you guys could recommend me some roms to take a look at, or to link some resources for a general overview of different roms!
My (personal) needs for a rom:
Its very important for me, to use a stable rom, which allows usb-debuging because i am developing android games.
I would love to use the latest android version and a rom which allows to update to later versions. And updating without deleting all the installed apps and files would be heaven on earth.
Motion controll is nice, but as far as i could extract from this threads, there is no stock jelly bean rom with this feature enabled, because its Samsung related, is that right?
I hope to find some answers on my questions.
Regards, psdev
Try wannam lite. Its my favorite

Maybe give a shot on Android Revolution HD and also Omega Rom. These roms are my favourite.
I saw that omega rom seems like the most famous one. But as i told i have no idea how it compares to others, could you please explain what it makes it so famous? (is it recently updated, does it has more features...)
But thanks so far for your answers!

[Q] New to using custom roms, couple of questions

I just recently started using custom roms thanks to a friend of mine. I'm currently using Cyanogenmod, I believe the most recent one (flashed to the one released today) but I noticed a few things were missing. The biggest concern of mine is that I don't seem to have Google Now on my phone, and I seem to have lost S-Voice (which I assume Google Now replaces). Voice search also doesn't seem to be working either. Whenever I try using voice search, it immediately crashes. Lastly, I don't get 4g HSPA+ anymore. I'm not in an LTE area but we do get H+ here. I noticed that I am on 3g all the time. Just wondering if there were any fixes for these problems. Not a huge issue, just an inconvenience I'd like to see fixed if possible.

Cyanogenmod has a discussion thread in the general section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2035141
you're best to go there and ask - but before you do, a quote from the cm10.1 thread you downloaded the rom from
- Camera: Recording effects broken
- Camera: Touch 2 focus issues with enabled flashlight
- Bluetooth: audio streaming sometimes becomes laggy or stops at a distance > 1m
- FM Radio: unsupported
- TV Out: unsupported, will never work (proprietary, undocumented)
- Lots of missing and yet unimplemented features
- and a lot more
these are known issues.
Actually we have two kind of roms. Based on Stock Samsung Rom and based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project). It isn't the same and AOSP roms mostly are missing much things added by Samsung, for example Smart Stay, Samsung Apps etc. CyanogenMod is based on AOSP.
If you ask me I'd stick with roms based on Samsung, mostly because I believe it's much more compatible than "clean" AOSP itself. But it's up to you, I'd suggest flashing some stock rom (f.e. Android Revolution HD) and make a decision which one you prefer.

Might i suggest you look into other top roms as well....after all, as long as you got a nandroid backup u can flash roms in a jiffy!
foxhound rom(most packed rom you can find!)
Rootbox(some nifty features plus it's very light and handles performance very well. Was also a very speedy performance rom on the s2)

Vanilla RootBox: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1898798
Or Samsung based like
