Any dev's or knowledgeable people want to take a crack at this? Is it based in fact, fiction, or irrelevant?
IDK, some things made since and some didnt. The whole writup seemed to be based on iOs vs. Android on scrolling. If you break down what iOs is, its an app launcher. Android is a home screen with live widgets and information. A true comparison would be Androids app page vs. iOs since both would be app launchers.
I never understood why people try and compare apples to oranges... or in this case, an app launcher to a 5 page home screen with tons of live information on it.
I think the guy was pretty clear on identifying bias and also gaugeing how factual his claimes are. I believe him and am confident that the corrections have made it Accurate.
The last post is true. Apple has locked down and simplified their os in the sake of smoothness. Where android has opted to provide a mors content rich experiance.
But at the same time hardware fragmentation is huge, ik he says that no matter how powerful the phones get this is a limitatikn, there is a huge problem with the fact that... Some procs. Support neon and other optimizations while ofhers don't. More often than not, app devs write their apps for the least powerful in an attempt to capture everyone, in the end, the most powerful loose out on the true potential of their device.
Look at push for example, most apps that i see still have bruit force check every 5 min type notifications even though android now has push. this is getting fixed, but slowly.

I think the biggest problem android faces is the carriers. Buy an iPhone and there is zero carrier crap installed. Buy android and bloaty mcfatty land.
Thanks to xda development we can purge this crap (revs you rock!), but for the vast majority this is akin to voodoo and they would never attempt it.
As such android gets a bad rap. If the carriers would just be content with having their names on the phone and nothing else I posit that there would be globally better view of android. Just my two cents.

I thought it was just the United States carriers that did this?
But, as android is an open model it opens up possibilities for carriers to customize the devices as they wish at little to no cost, also, allowing them to install apps to earn sidestreamed revenue.
I hate the carrier branding on my phone. I really really wish there was a way to get the AT&T logo off my phone.
The only place I'd allow it is the sim card.

But my unsubsidized Galaxy Tab 10.1 wi-fi is still laggy as hell. It's not the fault of carrier bloatware. Android OS is the one to blame. My WP7 phones runing a single core 1GHz Sanpdragon is much more smoother than any Android phones I owned, including the GS2.
No lag problems with my 10.1...

Bingo! This is exactly what I have thought for years. Buy an unlocked Nexus S if you doubt this at all and you'll see a different Android. Or, root your phone, flash a vanilla rom and install something like ADWLauncher EX and set it to "fast". Once all the crap and skin is wiped, my current GS2 switches tasks and pages so fast that sometimes I can't even see it happen. I literally burned my hand the other day on my phone.

What I really can't get my head around is how AT&T can think that people want their ****ty apps. They are an embarrassment.
I'm no expert, but I think that some of the apps that are on our phones out-of-box are there so that the price of the phone can be driven shown a bit more. It makes sense that AT&T would have agreements with the app makers to get money for including their app. Maybe they use that revenue to offset the overhead of distributing the device and pass that savings along to their customers.
I'm certainly not defending what they do, but just saying that could be a reason why some of this crapware is pre-installed.
Another way to look at it would be that many of the apps cost money to use. They will enroll you in some service you don't need (AT&T Nav, Live TV, etc.). Then they can steal from us by placing these little services onto our plan to be billed monthly. I have worked in customer care for one of "the big four" carriers and they would train us to employ similar tactics to trick existing customers into buying stuff. They're really like fat leaches attached to the inside of our wallets.
I have a focus and a gs2. Yes wp7 scrolls the home screen, notice I say screen since there is only one, smooth as silk. The animations are also very smooth but way too much and slowwww. Where you see the difference is in apps. Hell rebooting my focus takes forever. The engadget app and lazy tube app on wp7 really make the phone stutter and freeze. I have iPhones, winphones and androids and in my experience the gs2 is by far the fastest phone i own by a large margin. I still love the iPhone and winphone btw. The winphone is a first Gen device so it's performance is damned impressive. The animations and how slow it scrolls webpages/long lists annoy me. In android if you flick down a list real fast it goes like lightning, on the winphone it has a governor of sorts and I find myslef constantly trying to get it to scroll faster.
I know it sounds like I'm crapping on the winphone but that's not the case. It really is a cool os handbills recommend trying it out. I got a used focus for next to nothing.

Again, people are comparing apples to oranges... an app launcher (or in WinMo case, an app launcher with really large app links) to a multi-page homescreen with live information.
Try this, use the App launcher in Android and scroll back and fourth, up and down and now compare it to iOs or WinMo. YA, NOW THEY SCROLL THE SAME!!!
If you feel that your home screen is laggy, then either get a new launcher, or dont put any widgets/icons/shorcuts/pictures/ANYTHING on your home screen.

No you can't. Obviously you don't own a WP7. All Android phones I handled (BTW, my co-worker has another GS2, same deal) are no where near the smoothness of year old (with two year old single core Snapdragon) Samsung Focus in terms of home screen smoothness. When it comes to lag and stutters, I'm writing it off as the necessary evil I have to deal with if I'm going to use any Android devices. Too those who deny it, you need to go out and play with other platforms like WP7 or iPhone to understand what is lag.
I like Android. Thus I'm on my second Android Phone and even own an Android tablet. But to deny the obvious and inherent flaw in the OS is either ignorant or pure fanboyism.
Remember, I'm purely talking about home screen. When it comes to app, a lot of other factors come into play and CPU speed does make a difference. Home screen is where we spent most time and most complaint about lag is about.

Opening apps in WP7 has a considerable delay too. The WP7 homescreen is nothing, but a start menu. The live tile functionality really isn't there yet.
Yes, app loading is slow on first version of WP7 but it has greatly improved since then. What's the point of a great home screen when it lags like hell? GS2 is much better than my Captivate as well as my GTab 10.1. But I can still feel some slight lagness. My GTab 10.1 is almost unusable until 3.2 ROM released. Android's only saving grace right now is the raw processing power increase of the new phones that hides these inherent flaws in the OS. Google, or its partners, still has a long way to go to improve the UX of Android OS.
I've been trying to figure out how many apps there are for Android tablets and it has been really hard to find out, which in itself hints that it ain't good. But the best estimates I could find online pin it at around 1000-2000 apps. Didn't iPad 1 release with more than that? What is wrong with Android? I sincerely believe that this OS is better with its Widgets and customizations and all. But does it not bother you that after a whole year we have so few apps? I may as well go for an iPad at this rate. I mean i have all the apps i need now, but still some apps are meant for the phone, like Facebook.... still I feel it is worth investing in a device that actually has proper support... you are paying $500, shouldn't you expect more then just thousands of apps? And don't argue that the new iPad with its hi res display will have few apps. That is only temporary... it too will soon surpass the android tablet app tally...

I have over 200 apps on my Ipad. I have just as many on my prime and have found majority of my Ipad apps n AAndroid and have them on my prime now. So there's still slot of apps out there. Tablet only apps, yes Android has less but its steadily growing. Phone apps already caught up to apples.
Plus you won't catch many here wanting to switch to IOS over apps. Especially not me. I've already did the Ipad experience for 2 years n glad I came to android. I'm satisfied with what's available. It isn't like you can install all of them at once. Android has great apps n always could use more. But Android users generally know the deal when it comes to the apps. Apple needs apps to do things android does out the box by itself. My Ipad has alot of really good apps on it but I have them all ln my prime also. Majority being better on Android. So expect your poll to show love for Android and its ecosystem. Most try to stay away from limited features n capabilities of Ipad. Depends on what floats your boat the best.

All in all, it would be comforting to see a good recent estimate regarding android "tablet" Apps. As of now, I have apps to watch movies, socialize, a great browser, to read PDFs and eBooks and to take notes. I still feel that quality is lacking and I hope what you said about ICS unifying things will help devs dev more. But it bugs me that say Facebook has no tablet app, etc. Thankfully I don't game a lot though!
READ up on Ice Cream Sandwich Android version and see what its supposed to mean. Soon there will be no more need for tablet optimized apps as all will be optimized for whatever device its being used on.
If you want to get an Ipad that's cool, but I hope you didn't think most here would vote in favor of getting one. You will see soon most are happy with Android. Yes it could always get better but still love it regardless. I'd never switch back to Ipad. Seen so much more with Android now. Going back to IOS would be moving backwards in features and capabilities of a tablet.

I always see people complain about Facebook on android. Why? I have it and works great for me. I have like 3-4 different Facebook apps on my Ipad. Plus here is a reality check. The official Facebook app on Ipad isn't even the best one. It took them so long to bring it out that the 3rd party ones are the best now. The official app sux on Ipad and is buggy still. I have it and other ones on Ipad. You just have to search more. I have tons of great tablet apps on prime.
Here's a tip. If you want to look for android tablet app only marketplace, look for an app called Tablified. Its an marketplace that showcases all tablet only or optimized apps for Android. Its really good and apps must pass strict guidelines to be considered to be viewed in that app. Its a free app. A MEMBER here actually created it. It has a great look to it also.

Unfortunately, until we see many more ICS devices, developers won't focus on it and thus we'll not see apps that make good use of tablets because of it. It's true that right now the number of really good tablet apps is low, and it's frustrating. I'd think that 5-10 million Honeycomb or ICS tablets in the wild would be enough to generate more developer interest.
I honestly think developers are gun shy about spending the time on tablet apps because the press on the Android tablet market has been so universally horrible (and the hype on the iPad so universally and nauseatingly high). Those developers who've made tablet-optimized apps have done a great job with it, but really the iPad has a HUGE, HUGE advantage here. Even I find myself sometimes wanting to switch because of all the excellent iPad apps, and I can't stand Apple.
You can find a good tablet app for a most typical uses, and in many cases the phone apps work fine (because they scale better in many cases than iPhone apps scale to the iPad), but it remains a limitation. It's also another area where Google has done a bad job, either of making it easy to make tablet-optimized apps (I don't know either way) or of providing incentives for developers to make them.
I really don't get the fascination and need for all these "apps". I hate that word too, sounds so gay.
Give me a good browser, some good media players and you're pretty much good to go.
There is no need for a Facebook program at all. No need for XDA program, a Twitter program. You don't use them on your Windows desktop do you? The browser is all you need for all that.
I just don't get it. I don't even have one homescreen filled on my tablet.

Android doesn't longer have seperate Apps. Since ICS and fragments well written Apps will deliver an optimized layout for phones, tablets as well as Google TV. One App for all, that was the approach of Android and that's why the Google Play / Market doesn't have an extra Tablet section (beside the editors choice for tablets).
In the last years there was really a lack of good apps for tablets, but most of the new Apps make use of this new fragments and offer a great tablet ui.
New 8track app, tweetcaster, new official TED app, Astrid since their last update - just to mention a few.
In my opinion this will be the first serious year for Android Tablets and Apps which was also the reason for me to finally buy the Prime.

One think I've always wondered is: do fragments work on Android versions previous to ICS? Because if they do, then I wonder why more developers aren't using them. If they only work with ICS, then it makes sense--ICS is still only about 1% of the total Android population, and only on the Prime and Xoom in tablets.
And seriously, it should be MUCH easier to find tablet-optimized apps. While there are a handful of decent tablet-optimized apps, they're relatively hard to find and that fact alone contributes to the perception (real or imagined) that this is a real weakness of Android tablets.

I guess the question is what do you want to do with your Prime that would be fulfilled by an app? Or somewhat sarcastically; what could you do app-wise with an iPad that you want to do with your Prime? I suggest asking if your searching has yielded nothing suitable.
While it's fun to have lots of apps available, what if they are all crap?

Developer here...
Even with older OS versions the only difference between a phone and tablet app is the layout. Android already has some pretty killer tools for handling that. ICS makes it easier with some new tools (fragments), but by no means is it necessary. Few devs will target ICS for awhile. There are just too many older devices.
So... the biggest inhibitor is time. It takes a great deal of work to develop an app that makes both screen sizes happy. It also takes some practice. Since Android is behind compared to iOS, and the Android tablet market is smaller, we just have to wait. People have to learn how to take advantage of all this extra space.
By the way, its not really any easier to develop an iOS tablet app. In fact, even using the older versions of Android, its easier to deal with different layouts than on iOS.
I think as long as theres fragmentation most app devs are not gonna put as much effort with android. Why when there are so many ipad users and they only have to develop for 1 single platform and can concentrate on making it better rather than concentrating on making it more compatible across every different android devices. ICS was supposed to be the answer but not all ICS compatible app will work on all ICS devices. Then google is supposedly now gonna come out with jelly bean? Whats gonna happen then? So if i was a dev right now I wouldnt want to develop even for ICS not knowing what road block jelly bean will bring when apple is more guaranteed. The return profit is just not as good on android tablets right now. Until we match apples ecosystem I dont think we will ever have the benifits that ipad users have.

Do you remember when blueray players first came out, you could only get a handfull of movies for it? and now you can get damn near everything in blueray.
Remember a year or so ago when there was like, maybe 5 tablets total on the market? and now you cant turn the corner without finding yet another manufacturer of them?
Tablets are the fastest growing consumer trend in north america giving Apple a good run for their money. Considering this boom in the last year or so, developers are scrambling to try to support everything and find standards for how graphics will be displayed, etc. (which is why theres so many different versions of the same gameloft games)
Give it a few more months if you cant find what your looking for, it will be here then.
Also considering that ICS is still relatively new and developers need to make sure their apps work well on it before they release it, test, etc. its not surprising that there is limited support for ICS. If you want something thats tried, tested, and true then get the TF101. If you want to live on the edge like with the 201 then you have to expect some bugs along the way.
Give it time, it will come. Guaranteed.

Man look at some of those reviews...I really want to like/try this app, but not for $10.00 at this stage. Maybe once they've worked out the issues. Definitely has potential.

For $10 its way over priced. The amount of widgets is so small that it doesn't justify the cost.

Well I can honestly say that its worth it, yes the app is still going through its teething phase, its just come out of beta, but there's been some huge improvements since the beginning and their support has been top notch. I backed the project via Kick starter, hence I've been playing with it since the first beta release. A whole lot of new widgets are inbound very soon and I particularly like the "Make a widget" widget, it allows you to specify a particular URL to keep track of a particular website, this is excluding the browser specific widget that should be coming soon.
$10 might seem costly for an app, especially one that is still hasn't got all of its features yet, but definitely worth looking at in the near future when they've worked out all the kinks and added some more useful widgets

It's not about being able to afford $10 bucks, but what you're getting for that $10 bucks. If an app isn't worth $10 bucks then it's not worth $10 bucks. The reviews speak for themselves about the quality of the experience you're getting for that $10 bucks. Like I said before it has potential to be worth that amount but currently it just isn't at this point. Barely cracking a 3 out of a 5 start rating when I can easily see many of the other launchers are offering a better experience (nova launcher, go launcher, apex launcher, etc) at a much lower price. Granted, none of those launcher are being as ambitious as the chameleon launcher is trying to be, but it's not an excuse to say this launcher is worth $10 at this level. I actually really liked the idea of chameleon launcher and still do. It's just not ready for prime time yet.

Feel free to send me $10 then if its nothing to you. But seriously would you spend ten bucks to have all the widgets you already have for free? For my purposes I'm not going to spend 10 bucks for 1. a complete launcher replacement that doesnt have 3/4 of the widgets I currently use. 2. An incomplete product. If this was final and it had all the bells and whistles...fine, 10 bucks...take my money. But its not there yet.

It was available to the public, but it would only authenticate for people who had supported the project on Kickstarter. A lot of other people downloaded it and were pissed that they couldn't get it to work, even though it was clearly stated that it was only for the Kickstarter supporters.
Personally, I think it's got a bit of distance to cover before it is perfect, but it's totally usable at this point. I've been using it as my daily driver launcher for the past few days, and it's working great. The new widgets should be coming soon, and there are several developers working on additional widgets that will be available outside of the normal Chameleon pantheon.

As an early backer I am pleased to see someone has finally seen some sense. IMO this is a fine launcher and totally unique in that it fully utilizes the real estate available to tablets like ours. It has big potential too in the way the widgets have been opened up to to community development.
Unfortunately, someone high up in their organization got greedy and launched a semi-finished product at a ridiculous price that was only ever going to generate negative feedback and few sales.
Let's hope it's not too late to rescue what is a very fine project.
PS a myth that really needs knocking on the head is the one that says it only works with its own widgets. This is just not true. For some time now Android widgets work just fine within the Chameleon framework :good:.

No you haven't. It's at that price indefinitely :good:.
I bought this launcher at the new price to support the project as well.
This launcher does have a long way to go as compared with some of the free launchers available.
I do like the look but hope for more than just twelve chameleon widgets. Android widgets did work but don't always look right.

Both the Twitter and Facebook widget should be improved. In the Twitter widget the tweets sometimes doesn't show (some does) before many seconds later. The text sometimes doubble up.
And in both those widgets it should be a option to post a tweet/meesage without starting, for me TweetCaster and the browser. It should also be able to see comments etc.
The Calender widget doesn't work for me??
And Android widget do work, but not properly as mention above..
Apart from this, it works fine. Get more widgets and improve those allready there..

JUST My opinion
Chameleon videos where shown when they where trying to get people to donate to the project. Man I thought they where the bomb. I was really wanting to get my hands on it. Then we got what we paid for I couldn't believe it was so lamb! I felt like I had been taken! With all the updates that have been sent I have been hopeful every time and every time I have been disappointed. This is still one of the worst launchers on the market. I agree it has potential but now the update and changes have all but stopped. This app takes away the freedom to make the prime what you want and is only allowed to be what the developers want it to be. I know some will not like what I say but I paid the money and feel I have the right to speak on my experiences. So sorry if I offend you with my lame review but fact it they need to do ALLOT of work to make this thing passable. So bottom line don't buy it until you look at ALL reviews of it not just one.
Does the team still plan on updating? If so any hopes that it will live up to it's potential and hype?

after aboout two days i came to the realization that i just wasted 10 bucks. I uninstalled it. Hopefully their next project will be better since they have all our money to fund it.
The number of tablet apps designed for the iPad is much greater than those designed for the Nexus 10. However, in some cases the Nexus 10 doesn't need an app to do the job better than the iPad.
For example, trading on the CMCMarkets Web site needs Flash which is available on Windows or Android browsers but not on the Apple browser. Therefore, a seperate app is required on the iPad to trade on CMCMarkets and the one available is not as good for trading using the Windows or Android browsers.
So, although the iPad has more tablet designed apps than the Nexus 10 some of them are to compensate for not having Flash.
I'm all Android, but iPad's app ecosystem is great, even if they don't have flash.

Actually many apps are created on iOS because it lacks Flash, but that's no excuse for developers not to create them for Android, especially now that Flash is officially off Android. But you can access very much on Nexus 10 through a flash-supported browser, that is a minimum for me before buying a $500 device.
Is there a browser BTW which allows splitscreen, or one that has a large screen widget to use on desktop?

The problem with the iPad, for me (and i owned one briefly before i sold it,Wifi iPad2 16GB) is that the apps cost more than the Android equivalents sometimes and sometimes an app is free on Android but you need to pay for it on IOS.
The iPad apps are great when they are tablet optimised, there are more of them, but if you get an app that's not optimized unlike Android where it fills the screen, the app stays phone sized on the iPad, which is just weird.
Then when you add in a crap keyboard, no widgets (this was a biggie for me) and a restrictive ecosystem it ended up being sold.
Which was great as it helped with the cost of my just ordered Nexus 10.
Each to their own.

One of the great benifits of Android is that you can change it to suit yourself. For example, I love the Hackers keyboard with the row of numbers on view like the Galaxy Note and the easy access to the other characters using the shift key.

Yeah, but i also think its one of its weaknesses for the average joe, the iPad is simple, Android can be confusing due to the number of options.
I hoping what I saw from Skype 3.0 yesterday, could be the start of developers taking android tablets more seriously...
I have read that there is also the added benefit that app devs for android don't have to re-optimize their apps for tablets (resolution etc. like many devs had to do with the release of the retina iPad AND the original release of the ipad with supporting the larger screen size) apparently all the apps are able to scale up resolution without having to re-optimize...at least I thought I read that somewhere!

Optimization =/= Upscaling
Upscaling is not exactly but somewhat like stretching everything to fit the screen. There are algorithms to make it look better but that's the basic idea.
Optimization is making images and an interface directly for a tablet. This won't need any stretching and such and will always look better.
The apps for Android tablets are bad.....they just are. If you deny that, then you're not interested in a serious conversation on the topic. You're just biased towards Android to the point where you will make any excuse possible to make it sound better than it is.

Or you just don't care about a single one of the apps mentioned. Okay, I do use eBay for notifications, but I couldn't care less about its look.

I'd take quality (Android) over quantity (iOS). iOS has a ton of useless crapplets. Can't do without Groove IP, Lecture Notes, Droid48, Google Maps/Navigation/Streetview/Gmail/Docs/Translate/YouTube, OnLive and many more.

That makes absolutely no sense. iOS and Android both have very high quality apps and both have some pretty useless apps as well. For every app you listed (probably with the exception of maps, LOL), there's a high quality iOS equivalent app for it.
Anybody with half a brain could find an app to suit their needs on both systems.

This is exactly why we won't see that many tablet apps. People get so worked up when an app isn't holo themed but no one cares about having tablet apps. Android users just don't care and when users don't care, developers don't care. When folks start getting as sensitive to the lack of tablet optimization in an app as they do with an app that's not holo themed, that's when we'll start seeing more tablet apps.
I care and I make it a point to contact developers to ask them about a tablet version of their app. Be the change you want to see. Start caring and devs will follow.
-email developers and ask them for a tablet app
-let your voices be heard! Leave a comment and don't be afraid to dock them a couple stars for the lack of tablet optimization.
-don't be cheap!! Reward developers who taken the time to optimize their apps. I think the second posters in this thread said apps were too expensive or something. Seriously. Apps cost less than a cup of coffee at Starbucks.
This mentality that stretched out apps are just as good is absurd. People love to use the argument that stretching an app is better than what the iPad is doing. While that may be true in some cases, iPad users rarely have to worry about such things. Any app that you'd likely use on iPad will probably have an optimized version for it.
I know this may not be the most serious thing in the world but honestly, complaining about it in forums isn't going to do anything. Be proactive. Let developers know what we need and if there are enough people who want it, it will surely get done.

I don't think anyone will deny that Apple has more tablet apps. I will disagree that android apps are bad. I don't think your assessment is fair.
I've never had problems with a few of those apps that you listed. The others I haven't used.
Saying android tablets aren't worth it because a few apps on Android aren't as good is only true to you. I don't use my tablets only for those apps, and when I need those apps, they are there they get the job done just the same.

For anyone with half a brain I do highly recommend iOS devices with its limitations and restrictiveness. Even Apple's cofounder Steve Wozniak commented that it's good for mentally challenged people:

The thing is if google wants devs to develop more tablet optimized apps they should start by polishing their own.
Just look at the horrible compressed music art in the play music app, i ****ing hate how it downsamples whatever your album art is, now look at the album art on the iPad music player, the full res art looks great. I have ordered my 32gb Nexus 10 but this seriously ticks me off as i own an iPad 3 and a TP. Don't get me started wih the clock app.
Google's own Google+ app works better on the iPad3 than the Nexus 10

Could not agree more I have a note 2 for phone and ipad 3 for tablet. I also have a nexus 7 and android tablet suck in the app department big time it's not even funny. Ipad has it beat by a long shot and this is why ipad is so popular. Plus all developers concentrate on iOS and ipad before they even consider android. It's a shame I wish they were at least equal but don't matter what specs android tablet have if they don't have the apps majority of your normal users will not buy it period.

Anyone using one of the 3d launchers (TSF, Next, SPB) as their main launcher app on their HOX phones?
Obviously with the expense of them, most seem to be around £10 ($14usd) which is very expensive, it isn't really an option to try it for free for 15 minutes. I have tried both Next 3d and TSF Shell, played around for an hour or so then removed them as the apps were from a naughty source.
They certainly look cool enough, but us there really any advantage to them over the usual launchers such as Nova, Apex, Holo etc.
I found TSF shell the nicest and smoothest but had a bit of a learning curve, no fixed dock etc.
Apologies for the crappy topic, just wanted to get some thoughts on these launchers, gimmicky or not?
I love SPB, very polished and even nicer in tablet mode. But... way to much monies.
It's a lot of money for eye candy!
We androiders are a strange breed that like control. We also are restless types that change our launchers every six months or so.
So if you have the money Go for it but be aware that in a few months you will go back to an old favourite or move on to the next flashy launcher.
