[Q] SGS3 Wont connect to pc - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok ,so heres my problem:
My S3 (i9300) wont connect to my computer which is running windows 7. I plug it in, and there is no sound for a device connected, no confirmation, and all the gs3 does is charge. it doesnt even show the little usb symbol at the top on the status bar. i've also tried two different cables, two computers, and ive cleaned the usb port on the phone.
This is all pretty recent as well. it used to connect fine on stock and the same on cm9, but one day when i plugged it in, it said unrecognized device, and from then on, the computer doesnt even know its connected anymore. i restored back to my original stock backup that had worked fine before, but still no progress. Kies has been uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times and so have the drivers for samsung phones..

Download, extract and install, then try again

going to be a driver issue if it charges, install KIES first as that provides the necessary samsung drivers too. If this doesnt work then uninstall the USB controller you phone is connected to, unplug the phone and reboot. Leave the phone out and install KIES again. The try again.
Could be your cable too though, have you swap tested anything yet, does a different cable work or does the cable work ok in another PC?

I'm reinstalling KIES right now and ill try it with two different usb cables. If neither work, then ill try uninstalling the usb controller as you said and then go through the process once more. ill get back to you on it all when I'm done.

I have a few no-brand, cheap microUSB cables that allow only for charging the phones: they don't let me get a data connection between the phone (or whatever) and the PC.
Other USB cables work ok, so I know the problem is not with the phone.
You don't need (and shouldn't) install KIES only because of the drivers.
The only drivers you should install from the only trusted source are these:
http://developer.samsung.com/android/tools-sdks/Samsung-Andorid-USB-Driver-for-Windows

I had the same problem.
I tried EVERYTHING. I did tons of research and tried them all, nothing worked.
I fixed my problem by sending my phone in and getting it fixed. I think they replaced the hardware.
Your phone is likely having a hardware issue, get it sent in, this is the only way.

since this option is really quick to try, ill do that right now.
As for the cable I'm using, the one that I've been trying the most is the one that would work before i started having these issues. The other cable that i have is the one that came with my phone.

The only problems with that are: 1) My phone is rooted and 2) That might take a while... what im bascially trying to do now is get it to work with my pc so that i have the possibility of unrooting and putting my music on it directly through the cable, rather than removing my microsd and having to put that into an sd adapter.

I'm having the same issue with my AT&T version. I have CM10 installed. I flash back to stock via Odin and I can get it to work, but as soon as I flash back to CM10 after rooting it won't connect.

Did you flash back to the stock that the phone came with? I'm currently on a nandroid backup of my stock software that's rooted and I know as a fact did work at one point in time, but for some reason just refuses to connect to my pc.

No I am flashing to a stock rooted touchwiz and I can connect to my phone when its done. When it reboots it goes into a loop so I have to reboot it and wipe data/factory reset, then reboot. When it comes back on it still won't connect, so then I reflash stock root again using Odin and it comes back with USB connection working. I think some files are getting corrupt on the phone when flashing to CM10.

I had the same problem before, I used a different charger and it worked.. idk what it was

Well right now I am on Stock TW that is rooted and I can get into my phone via Windows Explorer. But if I was to put Clock work Mod back on it seems to not want to connect anymore. So it seems CWM is doing something weird.
I'm gonna install TWRP instead of CWM and see if that makes a difference.

I think that this could be what's happening. When I restore to my rooted touchwiz, all I do is restore and that's it. Could you explain exactly what you do to get it working again? I'm a bit of a noob so I just need it explained a little simpler.

Look for the rooted image for your phone for stock. Put your phone in download mode and use Odin to reflash it back to stock not a restore. Use this site for help: http://galaxys3root.com/category/galaxy-s3-unroot/
Its worked for me every time. You may have to flash it twice with Odin to get it to work, that's what I usually have to do.

My issue ended up being an app I had installed, Triangle Away. I uninstalled and rebooted and had my USB connection back.

Well, so far, all I've gotten it a "usb cable connected" notification when trying yet another cable. Although i got this notfication, i still couldnt see any of the files on it from my pc, so it basically wasn't really connected. Im not sure what to do from here.
My ultimate goal would be to be able to unroot it so that if i needed to send it in or whatever, then i could without worry. As a side question, is there anyway to unroot it without a pc?

Can't install drivers, Odin won't connect

Hi guys,
I have a problem that's fairly common but I can't get it right
I can't install new drivers for my SGS2, my pc/laptop don't recognize it anymore.
I have flashed an ICS rom before so I also tried the Nexus S drivers, no success.
I have tried to work with Android SDK manager but since my laptop can't find my phone, it won't find it as an adb device.
I managed to get back on 2.3.3 via CWM manager but my USB jig also doesn't work anymore.
I have tried everything regarding Kies and new drivers so I'm pretty much out of hope... Anyone with suggestions?
You could use mobile odin, also if you flash back to ics you can reset counter with triangleaway and then flash back to gb

Problem is that I can't flash back the old bootloader..
I think the logical step would be to try another PC, given you've tried everything else & nothing has worked.
You could also maybe try Heimdall (search for it on here).
Also, if you haven't tried different USB cables (in particular the one that came with the phone), give that a shot. Also make sure you're connecting the phone to a powered/mainboard USB port & not a hub port. Also, try toggling USB debugging in your phone settings.
That's about all I got. Try these things if you haven't already, but definitely try another PC.

I have tried different ports with different cables, different pc also won't install the drivers.
Usb debugging on/off doesn't work either.
Going to try heimdall today but it has something to do with my phone since I flashed so many files before with my pc and with my laptop.
Will post after I tried.
Yeah it sounds like a phone issue given you have been able to flash firmware with that PC previously. Good luck with Heimdall, fingers crossed for you.

Nope, heimdall can't recognize my phone either.
Running out of ideas here.
I guess there isn't an option to flash the old bootloader other than Odin huh?
Unfortunately Mobile Odin can't flash bootloaders yet, so Odin (and probably Heimdall) are your only options. Either way you're going to need USB.

My PC recently stopped working properly it connects but always fails flashing via Odin, I managed to set up Odin etc on GF laptop so at least I can use Odin if needed. Could you not try restoring your PC to earlier date and see if that works or uninstall everything to do with phone, kies, Odin adb etc and do a fresh install of everything

My phone doesn't connect at all.
I have tried uninstalling everything including drivers and such via USBDeview.
The problem lies with the phone itself I think, not my pc.
I think I have found the problem.
I think my USB port from my phone is broken.
I will try to reset my binary counter with Triangleaway, then flash back original firmware without root and then send it for repair to the Vodafone shop!
Hope this works

I have the same problem. I came from CM9 and now I cannot connect my phone to the PC. I am using CheckRom V6.
Do you think it has to do with the bootloader? Or might the usb port be broken as well?

Yeah I think that it has to do with the bootloader, but a broken usb port is also a common problem.
I still have warranty so I will just let Vodafone repair it.
If my pc still doesn't recognize it after that, then I'm screwed.

Not actually true. It just needs to be a working micro USB cable. I use a generic micro USB cable (originally for a BlackBerry, I think) for all my flashing. Works fine.

Yes i tried all that with no luck i just cant get my phone connected to my laptoo if i could I

Check for Windoze updates if you're unable to get your PC & phone to recognise each other after trying the obvious (different USB ports, different cables, different versions of Odin, making sure Kies/its processes aren't running in Task Manager on PC. Try *all* of these).
This has solved the issue for a few people over the last week or so. Failing that, uninstall Kies from your PC, reboot, redownload it, reinstall it, reboot & try again.
If that doesn't work, try a different PC.

This method not required to connect your mobile to PC.
Just need external sdcard and ics based recovery
If you are ics recovery version , we can come from this issue.
1, download any ics ROM ( stock based ) and copy to your external sdcard.
2, root the mobile using this way
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
[GUIDE] ROOT/UNROOT Stock ICS Firmware without flashing unsecure kernel
3, as per the above guide once you flashed cwm.zip , you will get cwm based recovery screen.
4, wipe system and cache
5, install the custom ROM from external sdcard
I believe this method will work for you.
All the best

Do what MistahBungle said + make sure that you install Kies first so that you have the proper drivers for Odin.
i have tried this methed. copied all the files on to the sd card, inserted back into the phone put into recovery but would not read external sd card only internal comes up????
That's nice.
Now have you tried the other suggestions that have been made ? If your phone & PC can't/won't recognise each other, you need to fix that first. Forget about CW not working. It's not relevant. You're not going to fix this without an Odin flash and making that happen should be your focus/priority.

I'm having the same issue today, i flashed the siyah kernel beta and now recovery doesn't work and phone stays on Samsung logo.
I can get into download mode but pc says unrecognised device . It was working fine a few days earlier.
Unfortunately my Samsung USB cable appears to have vanished too but I don't see why my other cable shouldn't work as long as it supports data? Maybe the cable is the issue though??
Might be. Try the (many) suggestions on the first page. Any one of those could be/resolve the problem. In addition to those suggestions, you can also try uninstalling Kies on your PC, rebooting, re-downloading it, reinstalling it, rebooting & then seeing if your PC & phone recognise each other.
But definitely try those other suggestions first.

Root without a PC?

Now it's no deal at all as she never plugs it into a PC anyway, I just transfer stuff bluetooth.
But I want to put a custom ROM on it to get rid of all the carrier bull****, but being un-able to connect to a PC, how can I root it and install one using just the handset itself?
Please help me?

Is the S2 already running ICS firmware? If so you can easily root using the method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
Just put the two linked files on your internal sd (either transfer then via bluetooth or directly download from your phone through the browser) and follow the instructions, literally a 2 minute job.
Yeah seen that, but it's not ICS

My galaxy Nexus connects up fine, just not her Galaxy S 2 yet it will charge fine. Dunno why.
EDIT: I take that back, left it plugged in and now it's making weird noises and sayings installing device driver software.
Sorry somebody else had posted my way of doing it
Just to eliminate another option have you tried cleaning the USB port on the phone, I have seen quite a few posts here and there saying that it has helped

Not possible, you have no cwm to flash it with, sammy`s 3rd recovery doesn`t allow flashing custom software. You need to have cwm.

You could try another usb port
Now WTF.
I rooted it, used Rom Manager to flash CWM and it's still the stock one.
Why isn't my phone this ***** hard.

Why are u using rom manager, it causes problems with sammy based roms. Turn off the phone, press volume up + menu +power buttom at the same time, you should get in cwm. Don`t use rom manager!
Did you try to connect on another pc? Or at least on another usb port? Windows should at least recognise that a new hardware has been plugged in

It's really weird.
I've tried it on three different computers (All Windows 7 though)
But it used to work on all three (except for when my desktop USB-ports ****ed themselves up)
I'm beginning to believe the outlet in which the USB cable goes into might be damaged.
I'm about to flash full Stock firmware, cause that's the last time I remember it working (like 3 months ago), and see if it works.
Any other tips?
Currently on WanamLite 11.4, and been flashing back and forward to Cyanogenmod using CWM flashables.

I flashed stock, lost root (i'm so stupid) and now since I can't connect the phone to my computer, I can't get CWM back to restore my backup.

Seems a bit weird, have you tried using another cable?
I almost bricked my phone once because of a damaged cable...
Cheers,
Stefan.
Try cleaning the contacts between the battery and your phone.
Did you fix your problem?
If not, what exactly happens when you plug it in to your computer?
If "something" at all happens, then you may just need to switch the internal USB switch to use PDA and not MODEM in the PhoneUtils hidden menu. Make sure both USB and UART is set to use PDA!
Dial: *#*#7284#*#*.
did u try to erase kies and install only driver?

Well, I have this experience while flashing my friend's phone and here what I've done:
-reboot my computer
-connect the phone, kill all kies related process (I'm using Windows) and start odin. If odin recognise your phone at this point, you are good to go else you might want to reinstall usb drivers.
-use full wipe odin files I found from internet (I got from the pirate bay with search key ics full wipe)
-got few files in that folder. Hope you know their function. Or you can ask here.
Hope this helps.
edit: you also can try to plug into different usb port that have different usb controller

If Odin adds and removes quickly, this looks like your USB cable is dead, try flashing with another - Genuine- one
I had a similar issue while flashing my former SGS1: flashing process interrupted suddenly at 50%
A similar kind of thing happened to my phone as well when I was upgrading to 4.0.4 from gingerbread via Kies. The installation got stuck when the phone was in the download mode and I had no other option than to disconnect. But yours got stuck while using Odin. I would suggest you to flash the firmware again. I hope your phone goes into download mode now. As for the drivers, uninstall everything related to samsung from your PC and then reinstall it. DO NOT UPGRADE SAMSUNG KIES IF IT ASKS YOU TO DO SO! AS I TOLD YOU A SIMILAR THING HAPPENED TO MY PHONE. MY PC COULD'NT RECOGNIZE IT AND I REINSTALLED EVEYTHING AND IT FINALLY SHOWED SOME SIGN. MAKE SURE YOUR ANTIVIRUS IS FULLY DEACTIVATED WHILE YOU EXECUTE THE FLASHING OPERATION!

first of all, while your phone is disconnected from USB cable, can you enter download mode?if no, then try to find someone that have JIG. else, as leech4 said, this might caused by your USB cable. OR might caused by your USB port of your PC. as i said earlier, try to repair your USB driver (not sammy USB driver, but your PC's usb driver). flash using ODIN, and kill kies services from task manager as kies will conflict with ODIN later. here i give you LSJ link(thanks to ApriliaM3) in case you don't have. extract the zip and use all the PDA, PHONE and CSC file. you can even use PIT to re-partition your system. (tested and proven to be working). good luck mate.:good:
I already uninstall all usb driver , and install back, it still cant work. my hf will restart every 5 sec. that why i cant connect properly. any suggestion ?

Talk to Samsung not us.
Next time do some research into your model and info on how to flash it properley before jumping in and screwing your device up.

Wow, I suspect this kind of brick or what so ever others called it. I've read some where, and they talking about JIG. If what they mean is the same like what I understood from my electronic knowledge, then you have to find someone that have JIG to do further troubleshooting directly from your board, not via usb. Well, I'm just saying. You might want to seek for other solution first since it's your device.
Cheers
