[Q] Would you reccommend the Optimus G - AT&T LG Optimus G

I am looking to upgrade from my Atrix 4g at the end of the month, I am looking at getting either the GS3, Optimus G, or Xperia TL, leaning t'words either the GS3 or Optimus G due to the extra Gig of ram. What are your personal pros and cons about the phone? How is the build quality? I see its rootable yet the boot loader is still locked, which to me isn't that big of a deal since I have only unlocked my Atrix to flash CM a few months ago before the ICS update was canned. If anyone is a previous LG user how are they with updates are they worse than Moto or better. Assuming the bootloader is unlocked and CM is ported to it I will run that but as long as stock isn't too slow I am fine with that.

I am a HUGE Sony fan and am so disappointed at both Sony and AT&T for releasing the TL... it's almost like the hardware was unfished and not a flagship device... Everyone knows the sg3 is a great phone but the screen resolution just doesn't cut it... I want to love this new LGOG and if they can iron out some of these little software glitches this will be an amazing phone for LG if the biased tech writers jump on board.

That's why I am looking more at the GSIII and Optimus G, the TL I'm sure is a pretty solid phone but it does seem like it was unfinished, plus I'm not a fan of the AT&T Logo on the front. I figured since the Optimus G is very similar in specs to the new Nexus if we can get an unlocked bootloader we should be fine on the drivers front on getting newer versions of Android working. I do love the look of the Xperia ION and the TL though. The Optimus G is a great looking phone and has an SD Card slot, I'd have to have my 32gb UHS1 Class micro sd card go to waste.
What kind of bugs are you experiencing right now? How is the stock launcher (I will most likely go with Nova Prime right off the bat, which I run on both my Atrix (CM10 w/ 'those' libs) and my TF101 CM10-nightly)

I say its worth I if you don't do a lot of rooting or Roms. I don't see that bing really popular on this phone. Me I don't do that anymore so I'm very satisfied with it, ui and all

Well the phone has only been out for a couple of days now so I say it's a little to early to say weather the phone picks up. Though you are most likely right. Seeing as the internals are very close to the Nexus 4 though, we might be able to port roms for it with minimal tweaks. I do root and flash roms, but only when I have to, the only device I've regularly flashed to is my TF101 which I flash nightlies every few days.

I can highly recommend this phone. I have only been using it 2 days now, but the battery life is amazing with brightness on at around 63%. From 9:45 am this morning to 6:06 pm now, on high brightness with using the phone like an average user, I have 68% battery left and the is with Eco mode and Power Saving OFF. Very pleased with this phone.

I have Eco mode OFF and LTE is on. Just for a perspective, I woke up at 6:30, and now, 2:37pm, the battery is on 74% which is awesome because with my galaxy s3, the battery life was much worse. Very happy with the phone.

Amazing phone
Super fast slick well built design and great battery life

I also upgraded from the Atrix 4G to the LG Optimus G.. and Wow.. originally i had the SGS3, then i took it back and got the LGOG. Im certainly not looking back. Great build quality and specs all around, only thing i dislike is the camera quality.. its sub-par.

I upgraded from atrix 4g. I love my LGOG. Looks, feel and performance excellent.

I would recommend it. I switched from the SGS3 to this, and I'm not disappointed. It feels very solid and has nice weight to it. It's fast as hell, too.

Returning my IP5 tomorrow, and I'm torn between this phone and the GN2.

Add One X+ as well to your considerations, but I would say go with the Optimus. Its stock software has its fare share of bugs, but in my opinion, one of the most important factors is the potential. The Optimus has superior hardware to each. Its A15 processor is more power efficient and faster than the other two.

Turned out I was up for an upgrade today, not the 22nd as I was lead to believe, so I picked up an Optimus G on my way home from work, I've only had it for about an hour, but I'm liking it so far.
Edit #1: For those of you who already rooted I'm assuming this is the only method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941699? Any issues with it, did you run it before or after running the OTA update?
Edit #2: I tried it myself, works fine.

I've had it for about 24 hours and, with the exception of the stock LG UI (Already replaced with the new ADW), it seems like quite the rocking phone. When the One X+ gets here at the end of the week I'm going to take a hard look at that and may swap out, but I don't think you can go wrong with this beast!

I don't know if you are paying attention to the development forum but they have clockwork tethered n on the device and they are actively working on an unlock n r very close.
Development is not everything !
NEVER buy a phone for what it 'might' do in the future. Buy it for what it can do now.
If custom roms are important to you, don't get this phone right now. Get an S3 or One X.
If a really good oem experience is OK for you, and root is good enough, then look no further! I think this is an awesome phone.
But until proven otherwise, assume that the bootloader will never be unlocked. It might be, but if that is critical to you, then you should be buying a phone that can do that today.
Each to their own.

Why buy those when the N4 is for sale as I type this note. You will not only get the custom ROM's but the quickest update to the latest releases of Andriod.

If only N4 had LTE, then I would jump right on that. In the meantime I'm looking forward to getting my OG, and keeping my fingers crossed for the devs to work their magic. Anyone else feel the same?

This phone is an animal. And even now, the test units for the N4 have been updated with the build that will be on the shipped units and in benchmarks and real world testing it doesn't hold a candle to this phone. That of course poses a couple of questions like why is vanilla android not as fast or faster than the build on the optimus g if the hardware is so similar? And why buy the n4 for faster access to updates if those updates don't bring it up to the same performance level as the Optimus G?
Wireless charging is the only feature I wish we had and hey, I can live without that. So IMO this phone is superior and will be even more so if/when the developers here work there magic and get passes the locked bootloader. So I would suggest sticking around.

While I agree that LTE and expandable storage are important, if lack of sufficient progress towards boot loader unlock, in 5 days, would drive you to return the device, for one that will get customer ROMs, getting an S3 which from what I read is about to lose it's dev support due to Samsung policies (devs are tired of doing inefficient, cumbersome work arounds that shouldn't be necessary) isn't a good option, even if you got LTE everywhere you went and could expand storage to 2 TB. The One x has it's drawbacks too.
Even stock unrooted, this thing is a monster in terms of what I'm seeing it do. I may still trade it in for the One X+ at the end of this week, but if I don't I certainly can't find fault with it yet. If I can survive a Droid Bionic with utter lack of Dev support (for good reasons, obviously), the LG OG will be a snap!

I'm thinking about return the OG also, and possibly getting the One X+ (if it's battery life is decent) or the Nexus 4 (and giving up LTE, not sure though).

Also even a stock upgrade to jellybean will give us a large performance boost... I am happy enough with root for now, there is no phone that compares to this one.
Imo with just 8/16 gb storage options , no matter what power it houses n4 is pretty useless ! A couple of hd games and few songs Will fill it up and then how am i supposed to take advantage of those a15 quads !

I really wish the HTC One X+ had 2GB of RAM, mainly because of the uncertainty of needing 2GB for the next version of Android OS.

The other thing you aren't understanding is the Tegra 3 only supports single channel memory, so that one gig is much slower than our 2gb of dual channel memory.

Ok starting off I'm very indecisive, I mean extremely indecisive... that being said i need help picking. I have the LGO, I traded my note 2 for it, I can go back anytime I want... so it's tempting to go back... but I really like the screen,so much better than the Samsung. I also love the speed.. even with LG all over this is thing, but I miss jelly and I don't know how I really feel about this thing.. so that being said what should I do.. if you could have not buy but have one or the other... which would it by and why?

There a lot of threads just like this that should help you reach your decision.
The Note 2's screen is too big for my tastes.
S4 Pro > Exynos 4412.
The Note 2 has way better battery life and the battery is also removable.
These are just off the top of my head.
I'm stickin' with my OG and I would have had I been in your position.
JB has nothing to add speed wise. Maybe some gestures but you won't feel significant difference speed wise.
Hardware is as close as it can be with Nexus 4 so soon will have a Nexus 4 with microSD support.
Patience my young padawan
Battery life is also noticeably better on ICS. I actually prefer it over JB. Especially since you can easily get all of the JB features on ICS when rooted.

I considered, and did a lot of research on, all the top phones for AT&T and chose the OG. Nothing I've seen so far has made me regret my decision even a little bit. Thanks to the devs on here, it does everything I want it to do, and has nearly all the JB features of my Nexus 7. Couldn't be much happier.

It's just a risk you'll have to either stray from or deal with. We have devs accomplishing great things but who knows what they'll be given access to. Could take time.
I'd you aren't planning on rooting your phone and installing custom ROMs and care about having updates in a moderately-timed manner, switch.
Otherwise, stick with the LG Original Gangsta. This is the smoothest phone I've ever owned and battery life is great. Screen is absolutely beautiful. I don't need to to the specs because I assume you've read them.

I have both the LGOG and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and I like both of them very much. I used the LGOG for about a month and have used the SGN2 for 1 week, so here are some of my observations:
The LGOG seems slightly faster, but it has a non-removable battery. The battery life is good with the LGOG, I can typically get 15-16 hours between charges and still have about 35% battery left. Not sure how LG is going to support the OG, wished that it had been released with JB on it.
The SGN2 has a removable battery, which is a BIG plus to me. The battery life on the SGN2 is better than the LGOG, after about 15-16 hours the battery is usually at about 50%. I actually like the bigger screen and the S-pen is a nice feature, but I don't know how much I will be using the S-pen. The 8mp camera on the SGN2 is markedly better than the one the LGOG, hands down. We have had several Samsung phones and I think Samsung will support the Note 2 and the S3 a lot better than LG will support the OG, meaning that Samsung will release updates quicker than LG.
Another area of concern is accessories, while you can find Cases for the AT&T LGOG, the selection can be a little slim and you have to be careful because the Sprint Cases will not fit on the AT&T version. Cases and accessories for the SGN2 are abundant.
Again, this is just my 2 cents. In the end you have to figure out what is important to you and figure out which phone best meets your needs. Once you make your decision, stick with it and be happy about it (don't look back.)
Good points, imarek3. The Note 2 is a great phone by all accounts. It definitely appeals to a certain market. That's why I love Android. It's so versatile in what manufacturers can do with it. Very democratic, as opposed to Apple's dictatorship. "You want choices? Alright, your phone can come in black or white."

Anyone come from a S3?

Just curious if anyone came from a Galaxy S III (AT&T) to the Optimus G (AT&T). Thoughts, regrets, etc. I know development is much more active on the S3, but if given the choice, would it be worth trading up/across from the S3 to the OG?

I did. My S3 and the sidewalk got in a fight. Sidewalk won.
So I sold the S3, got the OG, and love it. Yeah, I wish development was better but even on ICS, this phone runs smoother than my S3 ever did. And deveopment is getting there so just gotta wait I guess.
Not to mention, battery life is a million times better on the OG. God I hated my S3 in that regard....
Re: Anyone come for a S3?
I did. No regrets.
Not directly but I can tell you I wouldn't trade my LGOG for an S3.
I ha've an S3 on sprint for work and although battery life is better (no LTE) I would never get the att. Version over the lgog. It's a trade up. Screen is better and it performs faster even in eco mode.

Well I'm new here and came from a note 2. yeah, the note 2 was pretty cool but this phone is definitely more powerful. much faster, more fluid, better screen. Oh my gosh, the screen on this thing is amazing. I can see clearly in direct sun light now. this thing has amazing viewing angles and color reproduction. it makes AMOLED look like crap. I sold the note 2 because of dust getting under the lens. I read some more about people even getting dust under the screen. i decided to sell it and buy some cool stuff. Got the LGOG, a roku box, an android tablet, and a router with the money I got from that thing. Best deal ever. Why is this phone's price so low on ebay? This phone is seriously underrated. With this price development should be booming. It's better than the nexus 4 if you ask me (sd card) plus the ability to convert it to a nexus 4 if you really want to. I can't believe i didn't sell the note 2 the day I walked out of the tmobile store knowing this beast was out.

A quad core for $99, uh yeah, I jumped fence. I have had two Samsung Galaxy phones (Captivate I897 & SG2 I777) and between having to constantly kill the tethering app, the eEMC bricking problems, the crappy firmware updates that caused more problems on top of the ones the phone already had.......sharpened my baby teeth learning about Android on Samsung. With the LG I actually have a phone that works without having to mess with it all the time. What a concept, a phone that makes calls, has a battery that doesn't drain like crazy, doesn't have random SOD, etc.
The only thing that REALLY bugs me on the LG is the quality of the sound, well actually lack of sound, when listening to music. Music is flat and lacks depth. I just use my SG2 as glorified mp3 player.

The Atrix HD is in a similar situation. Locked down but has a developer edition out. Yet no one is doing anything for it. While you may be able to buy an unlocked one, you run the risk of being the only person doing anything for it with no help. Even then, if you lack the skills to make something for it, you'd be stuck hoping for a decent dev to join the scene. By the time someone even gets around to starting something for it, newer and better devices will probably be released and leave the HTC One without anything. Locked devices + the option to spend extra on an unlocked one is pointless IMHO.

No it is actually rock stable for stock, and still stable for AOSP. You will be stuck on GB and ICS until we get a developer to build us a kernel for JB Sense. Unless you want Cyanogenmod or AOKP.
Everything performs fast, it's not a HTC One but 1.5ghz is more than fast enough.
Try and get the phone for <180$ if you buy it.
Battery life is ok not bad but not excellent. My custom roms and other people's roms can help with that.
As for dev support we don't have as much as other phones but we are still going somewhere. Sorta.
Hope I helped.

To be honest I wouldn't buy this phone any more, it's too old, and if you look through the forums many people have had bad luck with this phone (bad battery, random reboots, backlight bleed, squeaky back) not saying you will have all these issues, but odds are at least one of these issues will plague you. I was lucky and only had the back light bleed, but my cousin also got this phone on my suggestion and he was plagued with reboots no matter what Rom I tried putting on it, and after a while his started to charge extremely slowly (to the point that it was unusable while charging, as the phone lost charge faster). He ended up selling it and got a sensation. I would recommend you get an HTC one x, which you can get for around 200-210 dollars off swappa and even eBay (I just ordered 3 of them all mint condition with boxes and they costed me 200 on average, one was 175 (but without box), one was 210 and one was 217 but they had the original box. Good luck
I got my girlfriend an HTC one x about 7 months ago (found a great deal on craigslist for 130 dollars, the phone was complete mint with the original box also in mint condition, guess the guy didn't know what his phone was worth) and it truly is a very nice phone. Only gripe would be the storage but if you don't play a lot of games I find 16gb is enough storage for most needs (people argue about their 100gb music library but with Google play music their arguments fail, and who needs to really carry a year's worth of music with them every day...)

I loved my Amaze but I have moved on from it.
The negatives: Button Back light bleed, randon reboots (caused by a bad battery), battery life is not too great, not much accessory support, no JB Kernel, odd ball 11pin micro usb port (still able to use a regular micro usb tho)
Everything else is nice... screen quality, camera, speed, sound... dev support is little but its still kicking.
As for cons only the battery life sucks other than that the phone is great for me well hardware specs wise the phone is really good for the ongoing price comparing to some high priced low spec devices out there, but software wise it's not that good cuz we got stuck in ics, I mean officially.. But we have custom roms so yay

It is great gadget but not a good phone. Signal prob are too much to ignore . just search htc amaze network signal and you ll be amazed to see how many people ranting about the problem.

I find it to be a rather pleasing phone honestly. I came from an HTC One V with Virgin Mobile and wanted to try T-Mobile because it was $5 and actually had support for 4G where I live. I looked on Craigslist for a decent T-Mobile phone. I looked at Sensations and almost bought one, but then I stumbled on the Amaze. The way I looked at it, it looked like a Sensation 2.0; faster processor, more RAM, support for 42.2 HSPA+, and more storage. I was originally gonna buy it from a guy for $140, but he dropped it to $120 because his kid threw the case away. I've been using it since about March or April and haven't had a single issue with it, except for the button bleed, but it doesn't really bother me. I can't really say anything on battery since he gave it to me with a 1900 mAH Anker batter, but its been decent. So I guess there's my story of how my Amaze came to be. It's a great phone that I've never even heard of prior to buying it, and my hobby is watching reviews of phones just because. I think these days, you can probably get it for less than $150 easy. I'd say if you care about massive dev support then go with the Sensation, at the expense of a less powerful phone, if not, then go with the Amaze. We may not have the most devs, but the ones we do have are amazing (no pun intended) and extremely dedicated. I hope this helps with your decision.

Very amazing review about amaze but on side note once sports88 (developer) said sensation and amaze have same level of development except for number of roms where sensation is leading.

For button bleed use the mod that kills them, use energy tweaks to disable button lights, or use one of my roms. (All of them have button lights disabled).

[Q] Worth upgrading to OG?

Hey OG users, I'm currently an HTC Sensation 4G / T-Mobile user looking for a good low-cost used phone to upgrade to.
Is the Optimus G a good phone right now?
I like the idea of the OG because:
T-Mobile LTE and HSPA+ is supposedly supported
It's a sister phone with the Nexus 4 so all Google's hardware driver updates should be able to be ported
It HAS AN SD CARD SLOT
It's got all the specs I want (HD screen, Quad Core, 2GB RAM, 16GB ROM)
It has OFFICIAL CM11. (How is that? Stable? Works well? I'm running an unofficial build on my senni and it's fantastic.)
Battery is fairly easily user-replaceable for when it degrades after a while.
IT'S BETTER THAN MY INCREDIBLY LOW RAM/ROM SENSATION.
I would probably use it for 18 - 30 Months and I don't want to spend more than $200 on an upgrade so this would be perfect. (I think)
Any advice you can give me? Would you would recommend this phone?
Thanks!
The vast majority of people have failed to get tmo lte. Other than that it works like a charm.

Official cm 11 for this device runs well..but I speak only of experience running official builds on the e970 (geeb) ...currently there's a M4 build, and a RC3 if I'm not mistaken. Nightlies are maintained by shelnutt2 ( I think)...I haven't heard anything about replacing the battery. That's a first for me,but I've only had the LGOG for a month. I came from the note i717 forums

Yeah that's the one I was talking about, the I found by going to Cyanogenmod.com
So it does run well? That's good to hear.
And I've never actually run official nightlies before, I've always used unofficial builds (since they're for newer versions of CM than the official versions are) that are more like weeklies and I do a full wipe about every 4th update since they say we shouldn't Dirty Flash. I can't imagine not dirty flashing on a ROM updated every night!
How do they deal with dirty flashing on nightlies? Don't residual problem arise? Or when they do, do they ask to do a full wipe before reporting it to make sure it's really there?
I'm not sure If I'd prefer to do the M builds only or Nightlies.
Thanks for your reply!

Sweet, that's my least cared about desire for the phone.
Do it man. I had the g pro for a few days. Now returning it and coming back to this. ( the one I had was beat up which ruined the experience a little bit ) this may sound weird but the 5.5 inch screen somehow didnt seem as cozy .. I may buy a better condition g pro but this really isn't bad at all
The sensation was an awful phone, got it when it released, then went back to my my touch 4g. Any phone released in 2012 is better than it, even the SGSII.

Some more than others, my sensation has been pretty fun over the last 18 months. but I think its time for a new adventure! Haha.
I just bought a phone with a "clean esn, cracked back, fuzzy camera, everything else works fine" OG for $71 on eBay, and ordered a new back for $24. If the back clears up the camera as well then I got a $95 upgrade!
If I don't like it I can always resell.
We'll see what happens in a few days when it arrives.

Yeah, I can't see myself using a phone larger than 5", MAYBE the G2, but 5.5"+ is way to big.
Though I'm probably going to upgrade my mom in a few months to the note 2 since it has a pen. We'll see.

S-pen is pretty neat stuff
I had the galaxy note i717, I rarely even used the S-pen...I pretty much stay on cm ROMs though, don't really go back to stock to often.

Depends on the person/device.
I have no interest in the Galaxy line with the burn in prone AMOLED; no interest in the HTC One 2013, do to a terrible button layout, and impossible to replace battery; no interest in phablets, too big.
If someone gifted one to me I may use it, but I'd likely sell it for another cheaper phone and pocket the difference

That would be my case as well, but my Mom's had a phone with a stylus in the past and I'm fairly certain she'd use it.

I told myself I'd never get a phablet but I ended up doing so. When I purchased the SGN i717...the size has its pros/cons...I wouldn't of gone any ****** than the 5.5 inch screen though. The Galaxy Mega is way to big, AFAIK there isn't another phone bigger right now other than the Mega...Most phones seem to be going for the 4.7-5.5 inch sizes...

The g pro 2 is gonna be 5.7 ? I'm looking forward to trying it out in att stores
The real estate is nice...the display looks great and playing games feels great with a larger screen...LGOG suits my screen size though. I'm not a huge gamer type anyhow...
