Should I stay or should I go? Please help - AT&T LG Optimus G

Ok starting off I'm very indecisive, I mean extremely indecisive... that being said i need help picking. I have the LGO, I traded my note 2 for it, I can go back anytime I want... so it's tempting to go back... but I really like the screen,so much better than the Samsung. I also love the speed.. even with LG all over this is thing, but I miss jelly and I don't know how I really feel about this thing.. so that being said what should I do.. if you could have not buy but have one or the other... which would it by and why?

There a lot of threads just like this that should help you reach your decision.

The Note 2's screen is too big for my tastes.
S4 Pro > Exynos 4412.
The Note 2 has way better battery life and the battery is also removable.
These are just off the top of my head.
I'm stickin' with my OG and I would have had I been in your position.

JB has nothing to add speed wise. Maybe some gestures but you won't feel significant difference speed wise.
Hardware is as close as it can be with Nexus 4 so soon will have a Nexus 4 with microSD support.
Patience my young padawan

Battery life is also noticeably better on ICS. I actually prefer it over JB. Especially since you can easily get all of the JB features on ICS when rooted.

I considered, and did a lot of research on, all the top phones for AT&T and chose the OG. Nothing I've seen so far has made me regret my decision even a little bit. Thanks to the devs on here, it does everything I want it to do, and has nearly all the JB features of my Nexus 7. Couldn't be much happier.

I tend to get much better battery life on jb. No proof on it at the moment, but I'll post screenshots later if I remember. Also Google now works much better than the hacked ICS version, and the expanded notifications are very nice to have.

It's just a risk you'll have to either stray from or deal with. We have devs accomplishing great things but who knows what they'll be given access to. Could take time.

I'd you aren't planning on rooting your phone and installing custom ROMs and care about having updates in a moderately-timed manner, switch.
Otherwise, stick with the LG Original Gangsta. This is the smoothest phone I've ever owned and battery life is great. Screen is absolutely beautiful. I don't need to to the specs because I assume you've read them.

I thought about going to the note 2 coming from a S3 to LGOG but I can't let it go ..I'm bored of touch wiz and its roms and honestly q slide is better then pop up video player..The heating of the LGOG still gets me thinking though but I know its smoother then the S3 in my opinion

I have both the LGOG and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and I like both of them very much. I used the LGOG for about a month and have used the SGN2 for 1 week, so here are some of my observations:
The LGOG seems slightly faster, but it has a non-removable battery. The battery life is good with the LGOG, I can typically get 15-16 hours between charges and still have about 35% battery left. Not sure how LG is going to support the OG, wished that it had been released with JB on it.
The SGN2 has a removable battery, which is a BIG plus to me. The battery life on the SGN2 is better than the LGOG, after about 15-16 hours the battery is usually at about 50%. I actually like the bigger screen and the S-pen is a nice feature, but I don't know how much I will be using the S-pen. The 8mp camera on the SGN2 is markedly better than the one the LGOG, hands down. We have had several Samsung phones and I think Samsung will support the Note 2 and the S3 a lot better than LG will support the OG, meaning that Samsung will release updates quicker than LG.
Another area of concern is accessories, while you can find Cases for the AT&T LGOG, the selection can be a little slim and you have to be careful because the Sprint Cases will not fit on the AT&T version. Cases and accessories for the SGN2 are abundant.
Again, this is just my 2 cents. In the end you have to figure out what is important to you and figure out which phone best meets your needs. Once you make your decision, stick with it and be happy about it (don't look back.)

Good points, imarek3. The Note 2 is a great phone by all accounts. It definitely appeals to a certain market. That's why I love Android. It's so versatile in what manufacturers can do with it. Very democratic, as opposed to Apple's dictatorship. "You want choices? Alright, your phone can come in black or white."

I would get the optimus g best phone I ever had just wish there was a aosp ROM or cm10.1 or aokp. I know there are building a aosp right now but not sure how far they have gotten, it seems every one is so busy with work lately which is a good thing its just makes this phone ROM development a little slower. Thanks again for all the devs hard work

[Q] Would you reccommend the Optimus G

I am looking to upgrade from my Atrix 4g at the end of the month, I am looking at getting either the GS3, Optimus G, or Xperia TL, leaning t'words either the GS3 or Optimus G due to the extra Gig of ram. What are your personal pros and cons about the phone? How is the build quality? I see its rootable yet the boot loader is still locked, which to me isn't that big of a deal since I have only unlocked my Atrix to flash CM a few months ago before the ICS update was canned. If anyone is a previous LG user how are they with updates are they worse than Moto or better. Assuming the bootloader is unlocked and CM is ported to it I will run that but as long as stock isn't too slow I am fine with that.
I am a HUGE Sony fan and am so disappointed at both Sony and AT&T for releasing the TL... it's almost like the hardware was unfished and not a flagship device... Everyone knows the sg3 is a great phone but the screen resolution just doesn't cut it... I want to love this new LGOG and if they can iron out some of these little software glitches this will be an amazing phone for LG if the biased tech writers jump on board.

That's why I am looking more at the GSIII and Optimus G, the TL I'm sure is a pretty solid phone but it does seem like it was unfinished, plus I'm not a fan of the AT&T Logo on the front. I figured since the Optimus G is very similar in specs to the new Nexus if we can get an unlocked bootloader we should be fine on the drivers front on getting newer versions of Android working. I do love the look of the Xperia ION and the TL though. The Optimus G is a great looking phone and has an SD Card slot, I'd have to have my 32gb UHS1 Class micro sd card go to waste.
What kind of bugs are you experiencing right now? How is the stock launcher (I will most likely go with Nova Prime right off the bat, which I run on both my Atrix (CM10 w/ 'those' libs) and my TF101 CM10-nightly)
I say its worth I if you don't do a lot of rooting or Roms. I don't see that bing really popular on this phone. Me I don't do that anymore so I'm very satisfied with it, ui and all

Well the phone has only been out for a couple of days now so I say it's a little to early to say weather the phone picks up. Though you are most likely right. Seeing as the internals are very close to the Nexus 4 though, we might be able to port roms for it with minimal tweaks. I do root and flash roms, but only when I have to, the only device I've regularly flashed to is my TF101 which I flash nightlies every few days.
I can highly recommend this phone. I have only been using it 2 days now, but the battery life is amazing with brightness on at around 63%. From 9:45 am this morning to 6:06 pm now, on high brightness with using the phone like an average user, I have 68% battery left and the is with Eco mode and Power Saving OFF. Very pleased with this phone.

I have Eco mode OFF and LTE is on. Just for a perspective, I woke up at 6:30, and now, 2:37pm, the battery is on 74% which is awesome because with my galaxy s3, the battery life was much worse. Very happy with the phone.
Amazing phone
Super fast slick well built design and great battery life
I also upgraded from the Atrix 4G to the LG Optimus G.. and Wow.. originally i had the SGS3, then i took it back and got the LGOG. Im certainly not looking back. Great build quality and specs all around, only thing i dislike is the camera quality.. its sub-par.

Add One X+ as well to your considerations, but I would say go with the Optimus. Its stock software has its fare share of bugs, but in my opinion, one of the most important factors is the potential. The Optimus has superior hardware to each. Its A15 processor is more power efficient and faster than the other two.

Turned out I was up for an upgrade today, not the 22nd as I was lead to believe, so I picked up an Optimus G on my way home from work, I've only had it for about an hour, but I'm liking it so far.
Edit #1: For those of you who already rooted I'm assuming this is the only method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941699? Any issues with it, did you run it before or after running the OTA update?
Edit #2: I tried it myself, works fine.
I've had it for about 24 hours and, with the exception of the stock LG UI (Already replaced with the new ADW), it seems like quite the rocking phone. When the One X+ gets here at the end of the week I'm going to take a hard look at that and may swap out, but I don't think you can go wrong with this beast!

Is this an underrated phone?

It's so cheap on att and only $50 on wireless amazon currently. It comes with all the top specs you can find today, excluding the upcoming 1080p devices. However, I'm getting mixed reviews from websites such as amazon and phonearena.
Any xda feedback i can get?

Pros: screen, best processor, micro SD slot, everything else I don't list as a con
Con: ..... I don't really consider these things bad at all but they are not the best. Battery is good for me. Camera takes good pictures for a smartphone. Its overheated like three times not really a big deal and I've had it since the beginning of December when I bought it for 200$
The combination of the amazing processor, plentiful ram, display( quality and size) , and the inclusion of a micro sd are its main points.
Yes this phone is highly underated and cheaper and still the phone i would go out and purchase today

Well in my opinion it's the most underrated phone on the market. Fast, well designed very mild LG skin(I use Nova so that takes care of that for me) and a nice sleek design even though I have it cased up due to work.
This is the third LG phone I've owned and the best device by them by far. Although I liked the other two I owned. Coming from the HTC One X and I don't miss that phone at all, nice device but dev unfriendly and HTC just isn't my thimg with their horrible Sense junk.
Buy it for the price you won't regret it imo. The dev community is a nice solid group as well.

ive never had mine over heat, had it for just over a month now. i love this phone, it has a nice solid weight, its one of the fastest phones out right now. the only bad things are the lack of JB, and its kind of slippery to hold without a case

Well I personally haven't had the overheating issue and like I said I rock a case because of work. Then again even though I have overclocked ever other phone I've owned, I just don't see a need to with this phone. I've also noticed very few people with the issue. If it was an epidemic I'm sure I would have noticed more since I seem to practically live on XDA, lol. Between here and the Note 10.1, One X and Atrix HD forums.
What's annoying about the phone is that sometimes you cannot put the brightness all the way up. Also camera is not so hot. Great phone overall and happy i have it (first android phone). With decent use my phone lasts about 10-12 hours.
If you have a decent phone right now I would just be patient and see if you like any of the 5 inch 1080p phones coming out (and possibly Galaxy S4). The screen "should" be superior, we won't know until we see it in hand comparing but another thing would be that the new phones will have a bigger battery (optimus pro g if in the USA will have a 3300 battery). If you are fine rooting etc than this phone will be fine but if not maybe the newer phones would be best as it would come with Jelly Bean and more than likely come out with 1-2 more updates (just pure speculation on my part)...whereas this phone will prob get Jelly Bean and that is it- however JB or not this phone runs very smooth and quick on ICS.
If you decide on this phone you will definitely be happy with it, especially at 50 bucks! Hell the Optimus G for Sprint is buy one get one free!
I think one of the reasons this phone is so far under the radar is due to the Nexus 4 stealing it's thunder. The OG and N4 have all the same "guts" but the N4 gets all the press due to having "pure android" and being first in line for all OS updates. That is all well and good, but I couldn't stomach being restricted to 16GB (11 usable) of storage. Not when I can buy a 64GB microSD card for only $40 and store all my media that I like to have on hand. Don't trust the cloud...
The OG also has LTE. That's not important to me since I'm on a Straight Talk plan, but it is a nice bonus feature for most people.
So as long as you're comfortable waiting for the devs here to keep you on the latest and greatest software, this phone IMHO is better than the Nexus 4, which most reviewers are in love with.
Thanks for the great feedback everyone. I was indeed comparing this to the Nexus 4, but this has LTE and N4 does not. However, i was also debating whether or not i wanted to wait for the 5 inch 1080ps instead because well, I like a big screen.

My personal opinion is that the phones are getting too big. I played around with the Note and Note 2 to get a feel for the size, and I just didn't care for it. I need a phone. Not a phablet and that's what I see it turning into at that size.
I agree. Phones are getting way too large, the Note and Note 2 are way too large for my taste and hands for that matter. I have a Note 10.1 tablet and love it so why do I need a bigger phone? Just my opinion as I know phablet users who love it.

Only real complaints I have are the speaker volume (fixed with the Sony enhancement) and the camera isn't that great (which doesn't bother me too much).
Also, the lack of updates. It doesn't effect me since I'm a flashoholic and will flash ROMs anyway, but still... It's more the principle of the matter. LG sucks so much with the updating and this phone should have had JB upon release.
What ever, I want AOKP and CM anyway!

Yeah I do like larger phones. My brother has a Note 2, and upon playing with it I already know its the perfect size. However, I have yet to get the Note 2 because of its price and me being a fairly smaller guy, I'm afraid the Note 2 will be indeed too large for my skinny pockets. Its definitely underrated. There isnt any major marketing of this phone, and to be honest people dont really trust LG because of the lack of support and updates. But they did a terrific job with the optimus g, every review that i read/watch praises this phone, how crazy fast it is. Now lg needs to support it and build some momentum to carry it over the optimus g pro.

Much smoother, the cpu/gpu is a big upgrade.
I would do it. I go back and forth between the two, but imo the s3 is the superior of the two.
Now the note 2 on the other hand....

If we're to believe Samsung Display, the display arm of Samsung, which is actually a desperate company, there might not be a Note 3 as we know it. They're replacing both the Note 2 display, as well as the S3 display with a 1920x1080 4.99 inch panel this year. This according to Anandtech. I suppose we could see a curved OLED touting Note, but then again, flexible OLED yield isn't supposed to be good enough for production runs til 2014.
Unless they're keeping the display a secret, this is what most would expect. This doesn't mean that they'll have some other type of offering or combination to allow SPen functionality on say....the S4, but I wouldn't personally design a new chassis around an S4 and call it a Note.
I'd definitely choose the S3 at this point. The Development support will last significantly longer than it will for this device. Isn't it the most popular Android device ever? That is to say, more users often means more ROMs, the pressure to update and develop for it will be higher.
Since were not talking about an upgrade, its a no brainer.
But if you had to use an upgrade, or pay more than say....50-100 bucks (personal figure) I definitely wouldn't do it. A new generation of SoCs is just around the corner. Just as well, the GPU is much more powerful on the S3, but app support and UI/general performance isn't too much better now that we have 4.2 AOSP. And while an official JB is probably a couple months out, but it will bring most Note2 features home for us.
That's the current sitrep for both devices.

Personally I love my note and it's plenty fast with the stable roms out there. My gf has a S3 and it's a nice device and I can really see the appeal but it really depends on WHAT you plan on doing with it. I remote into computers and my home network. Work on servers all from my phone so moving to a smaller screen isn't what I'd do. It has the horsepower to show up plenty of phones and though it's a gen old with older hardware, I kept my 86 toyota camry longer than I've had this phone and THAT was a piece of crap.
But again it's all about needs and wants. If you feel that you need the faster phone and are willing to loose the screen size, I say go for it.

Agreed, with new phone announcements coming up soon it doesn't make sense to upgrade for any form of currency, but in a straight trade, it might be worth it.

True, but I'd hazard to guess that's more due to the devs waiting for official JB to be released. But as my gf likes to remind me, I'm often wrong
Jamesyboy said:

I find the ui performance much smoother on the s3. ridiculously so actually.
the 4.2 roms do help the note but it still isn't in the same ballpark as the s3
actually the note 2 non international is fast enough, after you apply the Lag-remover app, posted this month. The Note flies after!

so so smooth.

Anyone come from a S3?

Just curious if anyone came from a Galaxy S III (AT&T) to the Optimus G (AT&T). Thoughts, regrets, etc. I know development is much more active on the S3, but if given the choice, would it be worth trading up/across from the S3 to the OG?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I did. My S3 and the sidewalk got in a fight. Sidewalk won.
So I sold the S3, got the OG, and love it. Yeah, I wish development was better but even on ICS, this phone runs smoother than my S3 ever did. And deveopment is getting there so just gotta wait I guess.
Not to mention, battery life is a million times better on the OG. God I hated my S3 in that regard....
Re: Anyone come for a S3?
I did. No regrets.
Not directly but I can tell you I wouldn't trade my LGOG for an S3.
I ha've an S3 on sprint for work and although battery life is better (no LTE) I would never get the att. Version over the lgog. It's a trade up. Screen is better and it performs faster even in eco mode.

I did and I don't have anything bad to say about the s3, still have it, not that its in the same league but still was a great phone. I have 3 lines, seems I'm due for another upgrade now on one so decisions... Don't know if I'll go to the pro, s4 or something else but no rush with the og being as nice as it is.

If you can get one. HTC has fallen so far that they have major supply chain problems.
And if you want to pay through the nose for a lot of storage, since it doesn't have an sd card...
And if you want to put up with HTC's BS in terms of unlocking bootloaders/s-off...
Tough call in my opinion.

I have an upgrade available this year, but I may have the opportunity to swap my S3 for the OG without using my upgrade, hence my question.

Well I'm new here and came from a note 2. yeah, the note 2 was pretty cool but this phone is definitely more powerful. much faster, more fluid, better screen. Oh my gosh, the screen on this thing is amazing. I can see clearly in direct sun light now. this thing has amazing viewing angles and color reproduction. it makes AMOLED look like crap. I sold the note 2 because of dust getting under the lens. I read some more about people even getting dust under the screen. i decided to sell it and buy some cool stuff. Got the LGOG, a roku box, an android tablet, and a router with the money I got from that thing. Best deal ever. Why is this phone's price so low on ebay? This phone is seriously underrated. With this price development should be booming. It's better than the nexus 4 if you ask me (sd card) plus the ability to convert it to a nexus 4 if you really want to. I can't believe i didn't sell the note 2 the day I walked out of the tmobile store knowing this beast was out.
S3 was a great phone but comparison on pure CPU speed the lgog has raw power! I think my switch from S3 to LGOG was worth the gamble being not an LG fanboy. I always said I will only get Samsung or HTC devices... Well I guess LG is on the list now! Lol

A quad core for $99, uh yeah, I jumped fence. I have had two Samsung Galaxy phones (Captivate I897 & SG2 I777) and between having to constantly kill the tethering app, the eEMC bricking problems, the crappy firmware updates that caused more problems on top of the ones the phone already had.......sharpened my baby teeth learning about Android on Samsung. With the LG I actually have a phone that works without having to mess with it all the time. What a concept, a phone that makes calls, has a battery that doesn't drain like crazy, doesn't have random SOD, etc.
The only thing that REALLY bugs me on the LG is the quality of the sound, well actually lack of sound, when listening to music. Music is flat and lacks depth. I just use my SG2 as glorified mp3 player.

The Atrix HD is in a similar situation. Locked down but has a developer edition out. Yet no one is doing anything for it. While you may be able to buy an unlocked one, you run the risk of being the only person doing anything for it with no help. Even then, if you lack the skills to make something for it, you'd be stuck hoping for a decent dev to join the scene. By the time someone even gets around to starting something for it, newer and better devices will probably be released and leave the HTC One without anything. Locked devices + the option to spend extra on an unlocked one is pointless IMHO.

So just got my Optimus g today.. Got rid of my note 2

Have to say I'm pretty impressed.
Due to a financial bind, I had to sell my galaxy note 2 today and had to get another phone, both through Craigslist, so I picked up the og for 160 cash, then sold my note 2 titanium for 400.
I think I got a BARGAIN on this Optimus, the thing is a beast.
The note 2 was such a powerful device with superb battery life, honestly battery life was incredible on it, I couldn't imagine it would be so good, could go a easy 14 hours with extremely heavy usage, sad to say I can bet some penny's that the battery won't come close to compare on this Optimus, since I bought it at 35%battery and it was dead a hour later lol.
Needless to say I need to get a car charger again, lol
So where do I go from here?
I'm mainly interested in a more stock rom but something fast, stable and good with battery.
I'm willing to go non stockish as well, what everyone's rom and kernel picks?
I never rooted the note 2,it was THAT good lol and I'm usually the type to root ab rom everything

160 for an LGOG? those things are going for 400 on ebay... I'd worry about the legitimacy of the source. Hopefully at&t won't shut you down all of a sudden when the owner calls it in... Here's hoping you just caught an impulse seller in desperate need for cash. I've found a few of those in the past.
yer not likely to get note2 battery life, but with JB, yer idle drain should be in the 1-1.5%/hr range even with LTE. screen-on will drain faster, of course, but the LGOG screen is not nearly as thirsty as the SAMOLED in the note2. With the screen on, I might do 10%/hr, so that 35% in one hour is hopefully an aberration and not an indication of a bad battery. Good luck.
Screw rom's man. Keep it stock, upgrade to JB (over the air through AT&T) and leave it as is. Everything works and works incredibly well. No need to stick a ROM on there and lose a feature like Bluetooth or have buggy SMS like some people are reporting. This phone is PERFECTLY fine stock.
If you want to root your phone and install a custom ROM, I recommend TeenyBin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230994
This will do all of the work for you. You will need LGNPST, I can help you get it, just send me a message.

No offense meant, but how can u say screw ROMs on XDA????I'll agree the phone is awesome stock, but its that much better rooted and unlocked. Been running rootbox and houcha kernel..I've lost no features, only gained performance and battery life. There is awesome development going on here. I can't name everyone, but its a good crowd. Give RootBox a try. That has, by far, been my favorite ROM. Not just for the LGOG, but in general. houstonn is a boss when it comes to keeping it updated and it's been rock solid for me. I'm gonna pop a few new scripts on my battery tweaks thread that'll help with CPU scaling on smartmax and dancedance which should definitely help with screen on time. I was a stock freak as well.. Until we got RootBox.

Yeah 160,i basically stole it, and back when this device first came out, I was on sprint, so i played with it in the store and really liked it, but was not sure about LG and it's support, plus the fact it launched with ics was a big turn off . But when I needed to sell the note, I needed something comparable as In quad core and ram, so I searched around almost got the nexus 4 but seen this for 160 and couldn't pass it up, for some reason they aren't that popular here and it had been listed for one for a week at 180. Only three others were in Milwaukee Craigslist, but they were 300+.this phone doesn't seem as well known as others for whatever reason.
Its a really awesome device and I'm impressed with it in every way including battery, surprisingly I don't really miss my note much but the build quality on this device is much better than the note.
I'm running it naked, i need a case badly as I'm starting to see scratching and such on the sides and back any recommendations?
So what's the benefits of running the op g pro radio and nexus 3.3?
I updated it to jelly bean as well, it had 3 updates before it finally got JB.
