[Q] Flasing a JB 4.1.2 rom Produces a Black screen!!!??? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I am running a Siyah Kernel 4.3.3 with mcswap, I tried flasing 3 different 4.1.2 roms on the phone but it produced a Black screen each time on the 2nd rom section. It runs fine when i flash a 4.1.1 version with the custom boot animations but shows a blank screen on flashing the latest 4.1.2 AOKP, paranoidandroid or supernexus. Please Help.

Did you full wipe?

It's a kernel mismatch, are you using the Mali version of Siyah? You should be.

Do you mean flash the first one CWM flashable one or the second one 'ICS' one i did try the first but that didnt boot the phone itself.
P.S-I'm running 'F1 Galaxy Nexus' rom as the primary rom

I meant this Image

I'm not sure what u are asking, but it seems like you're confused. 4.0.x is ICS. so flash an ICS kernel. 4.1.x is jellybean. So flash a jellybean kernel. If one kernel doesn't do what u want, try another. All of this information is already available here and in the development threads.

Flash AOKP and Gapps and thats it. Make sure to factory reset and wipe extweaks and init.d scripts in kernel specific settings and then reboot.

[Q] ClockworkMod v5.8.1.8 won't stay

I'm curious if anyone else is or has experienced issues with ClockworkMod Recovery 5.8.1.8?
When I boot to recovery I see, CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4
I've flashed CWM 5.8.1.8 and then I see the version change but, if I reboot the phone or reboot recovery it reverts back to v5.5.0.4....
Any tips, tricks, or ideas?

No. Short answer, No.
Long answer, No, I just posted a picture of what i'm using. (did you see it?)
I'm rebooting into ClockworkMod recovery.
I then select install zip from sdcard
I then select choose zip from internal sdcard
and select the appropriate .zip file.
then recovery reboots into v5.8.1.8.
I'm not trying to use any app within the running OS to flash the newer version.
Is that clearer?

Okay that helps me out now that you finally answered my question, so you're trying to flash a newer version of cwm from the older version of it? Or are you flashing a rom too, I never worry about flashing cwm as all roms/kernels have a ones packaged in I feel it's unnecessary

yep, that's all I'm trying to do.
I've done the same thing to upgrade CWM on my old Atrix. So I'm not sure why it isn't working this time... Can't imagine the process would have changed.
I moved the .zip file to the external sd card and flashed it but that still didnt work. it didn't work when i tried to flash it with odin either.

Personally I would just leave it it isn't a huge deal, or flash a kernel that has a newer version

This isn't an Atrix and recovery on the GS2 is not like any other phone. You can flash that zip all day long its not going to do a thing.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that cwm is baked into the kernel. Without changing to a kernel with the new CWM, it will always come back to whatever the kernel you are running has baked into it.

Absolutely correct. Its not as simple as a good old recovery.img anymore.

Use the Siyah kernel and it has the touch clockworkmod recovery baked in. The others above are correct, it is something that has to be changed in the kernel. When the first touch recovery came out I too tried it the way you did by flashing it in regular cwm. Then you will see and can use it. BUT it does not stick because it has to he added into tue kernel.

It can he used the same way basically with using the buttons for volume +/- and power to select. Or clicking on whatever option, or sliding your finger up or down to the selections and double tapping to select. It is kind of a cool featute bit not that big of a deal. I am using my own personal made version that is basically the same as hos rom and you can use the siyah kernel that came/comes with it and it has the touch version of cwm so you can try it out. I dont usually spend much time while in cwm except to flash things. So it is not a huge deal or deal breaker either way.

Kinda Noobie here
hello,
2 month back i brought unlocked i777 from ebay. It got rooted and unlocked with Android version 2.3.4, baseband i777UCKH7 and kernel version 2.6.35.7.
It got super user app (so i think its rooted). But the CMW is not installed. i checked in recovery mode (it show some android recovery).
So now i m thinkin of installing the latest AOKP ROM (with siyah kernel) but not sure wat to flash first.
should i root again first (root + CWM) then install AOKP. then change the kernel.
or root then kernel then AOKP ?
also i m confuse which root method should i use for installing CWM in gingerbread .

i read that guide thread .. as my phone got Superuser, i m using the Mobile odin method [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081].
As i m on gingerbread, i need to use gingerbread kernel to install clockwork model. i.e Entropy512's Daily Driver or Siyah 2.6.
but i wanna intall ICS rom , so after installing siyah 2.6 should is flash with latest AOKP on it ? will siyah 2.6 support the latest AOKP ?

Install kernel with cwm.
Boot to recovery and install aokp rom
Done
Every rom install contains a kernel that works with the rom. Doesn't matter what you had before.

You just need to decide if you want a stock or a custom ROM.
As your running checkrom you're obviously not a stranger to flashing ROMs so just do a bit of research into some and flash.
Make a back using clockwork mod and if you want to go back to your old set up you can
A few custom ROMs to try are:
Ressurection Remix
Slim ICS
Elite Rom
Cyanogenmod 9
Will probably try cyanogenmod.
Is it pretty much just flash through cmw as before?
sent from my fat little fingers
I would suggest rootbox. There is an ICS version and a JB, which is actually really stable
Thanks for the reply
This is where I got confused lol so is root box the new cwm? Or do I use cmw to flash root box then use root box to flash an ics rom?

Yes, that is all it is about. Make a nandroid backup first. Then wipe it clean, cache and data, and then flash whatever ROM you choose.
I can relate to your problem, s2 seriously has a lot of ROMs so try them and stick with that which YOU like personally. If you want you can try CM9 only first or any other. Just go to that ROM's thread and they mention how to flash in the OP.

No, you can't flash a ICS ROM over a JB ROM. You can either restore an ICS backup then flash the ICS ROM you want or you can return to stock GB or ICS using Odin than reroot, flash an ICS ROM, etc. I always keep a stock ICS nandroid on my phone so if I want to flash an ICS ROM, I just restore it then flash what I want.

If you don't know what you're talking about please don't attempt to answer someone's question. I'm sure we're all new at some point, but you're causing more confusion than you are helping. To the OP - YES u can flash any rom u want from recovery, be it gingerbread, ice cream sandwich or jellybean. Just do a full wipe of your data cache and system partitions in recovery before flashing the new rom.

Why wouldn't it be safe? Plus it's not like it says exactly what to do in every OP to flash their rom.

Tw launcher has stopped..

I made a factory reset, and after that, I get the message: "tw launcher has stopped" and I can´t do anything.
I´ve the NEAK Kernel CWM Recovery v5.5.0.4.
I´ve searched for the solution but I can´t find the answer...
Thank you!
There's a neak kernel available on the i777?

Well, I´m not pretty sure if NEAK is the Kernel´s name. In the recovery menu, says: N.E.A.K CWM Recovery v5.5.0.4.
Can I solve it installing another rom?

Can I install that firmware? Is it compatible? May it fix the problem?

Not with NEAK. Just flash the ROM you want and there will be a kernel packaged with the ROM
