Battery Only Charges to 70% - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have searched the forums but not found a thread which is similar to my problem.. I know there are battery drain issues with wifi etc but this is wierd and only started happening a few days back.
Basically i plug phone in to charge and it charges completely normally and quickly as it used to but only charges up to about 68/70% then it basically stops charging any higher, LED still red, charging display over battery still there. Turning phone off, rebooting, unplugging and plugging charger back in all makes no difference!
Any ideas what could be the cause of this? how to resolve?
I'm on stock JB, using the official wall charger and USB cable and i made sure the battery was full when i updated to JB as well.

Try a different battery, these are getting to the point where some will start to fail, six month warranties on batteries for a reason.

Well i have a £1.99 spare battery in atm as i run the original battery completely flat today. Seriously though be surprised if battery fail after 3/4 mths - never had battery dying issues on previous phones i've had until they were a good 2/3 years old.. Always a first though LOL
Its like the battery is saying its fully charged at 70%, now its completely flat i will charge it overnight with the phone off to full (if it gets there) and see if is resets the battery callibration or something.

Try to wipe battery stats via cwm recovery/advanced.

if you are rooted than download batterycalibration and untick 100% charge and click recalibrite and leave the phone on charge and it should charge up nto 100%

This app just wipes battery stays, so you can do same by going to cwm/advanced/wipe battery stats.

It has nothing to do with wiping battery stats. I think Kangburra is right...

UPDATE.
Shamed to say that i am not rooted yet... I have been there and done all that on my old phone ZTE Blade, but i really like the added functions that TW brings and don't suffer much in the way of anoying redraws or lag etc (although i do feel that TW could be optomised alot better along with better RAM Management)
I was going to at least root to sim unlock but got a sim free unlocked phone so had no need, then other stuff i wanted to do like freeze samsung apps etc is all possible without root and i've not come across that "I" need root at the moment.. was going to for APPS2ROM but i got no need to free up space yet.
Cheers for the suggustions though - I have that battery callibration app already (from old phone days) obviously don't work though.
Anyway - I am monitoring battery atm but it seems that running the battery completely flat until it turned itself off and charging overnight with battery off has resolved this issue - maybe this reset the battery stats and recalibrated it.
Its back to normal now, charges upto 100% as normal!! Fingers crossed this was just a blip

make a test disabling the data/wifi and bluetooth, don't use full brightness in the screen after that use it normally if in those conditions the battery still drains in 3 hours then I dare to say that is something in the hardware of the phone
DONE all of that ! tried everything trust me well i think ive tried everything, im on stock rom now, calibrating my battery again and again till i get 100% after restart, because whenever i charge it charges in like 20 minutes, lets see how i go, sometimes with 30% battery i get 4 hours, sometimes with 100% battery i get 4 hours battery, makes no sense whatsoever.
If u want u can tried to change a new battery

you would never get 100% after restart because the phone uses battery when booting and loading the system.
calibrating if you are talking about the option that erase the file that have the stats of the battery that isn't going to change anything if your phone discharge in x minutes it will still discharge in that same amount of time because that method of calibration is a kind of reset to the %display in the phone nothing else.
if you can. try measuring the mA of the battery after charging it with a tester, then measure it again when the phone display something like 50% of charge it shouldn't vary a lot if the battery is in a good state.
but you in the first post said that you have tried with a new battery and still get the same time. and at the same time say that you have tried the phone with the data off. and get discharged quickly. if that is accurate then your phone have some kind of hardware failure that is making it use more battery than necessary, so you should send it to repair.
ps: also you can check the phone signal if you are in an area with poor reception the phone will use more battery because it will need to use more potency to establish a link with the cell tower.

nope not in an area with poor signal, ok im thinkin its an hardware failure as well, i might need to buy an external charger , my charging port might be screwed up, but like when i let my battery die down a little bit, and then i calibrate when it is at about 40% i then wipe battery stats and restart phone its at 22% and it stayed at 22% all night i didnt put it too charge and i listened to music for about 30 minutes or so, now i dont know what the f*** is going on i love my x10 mini pro, i just want this solved
I sort of got this kind of problem when i was running MiniCM2.2.0. It really buggered up the battery, it would lose about 7 or 8 percent when i was just looking at the lockscreen after powering up my phone.
Sometimes it will just drain like in no time at all, complain that i have to charge it, but when I turn off the phone and restart it, and it will say i'm at 60 percent. sometimes that is true, sometimes not, i only put it on the charger when I'm reasonably sure there is no power left, ie, if after a restart of two or three it will still say i'm under 10%.
So, whenever it runs out of power,do a restart and see how much power you've got left. don't charge it until you're absolutely sure you have to. Still not sure where it leads to, but I don't think i'll get back the battery-endurance i had before., which was about 3 or 4 days on fairly minimal use, without 3g or wifi.
(PS: Don't wipe battery stats until the phone is fully charged. Charging it from just about nothing to 100% in one go and then wiping the stats seems to give me best result.)

yep ive tried different charger and charging through USB. same thing charges to 100% really fast, and comes back down really fast, every single time i restart my phone after it has charged to one hundred percentage drops by 20% until it has come to its real charged percentage i think it is in the hardware of my phone, am i able to connect a bst38 battery to an old nokia to try charge the phone?

Battery not charging to 100% with replace, but retail bh5x does

Hi again
I know this is a well know issue but i wanted to ask something about the batteries and this problem. For some reason when i bought my Atrix it came with the bh5x, but i bought a bh6x after a few months. The problem is that when i started flashing roms the battery stopped charging to 100% with the bh6x, in some roms it charges to 93%, sometimes to 72%, etc; but my stock battery every time charges up to 100%. I know it may sound crazy, how can batteries affect this percentage since the charge it's the same, only the mAh.
The bh6x charges up to 100% (my phones says) when i charge it with the wall charger. I'm now using the bh6x in case of i ran out of battery with the bh5x because for some reason, using the bh6x while charged with the external charger, my camera stops working, it force closes. At the beginning i thought that this could be just coincidence, but i haven't had that problem since i put the bh5x as the primary one.
For me it doesn't make sense that the stock one charges full, and the bh6x(original) doesn't. I thought that there could be some file or configuration on the phone that i've not seen, i'm not a professional in this rom stuff, but i know at least the basics.
Has someone experienced something like this?

There is a fix for that. I can't remember who did it, or what it is called, but it is in the dev. section.

Yeah, i know that there is a fix for that, but that was not the question, otherwise i would just download it over again. The intrigue here was that it's akward that my stock battery( bh5x) charges always to 100% without problems, but my replacement battery(bh6x) doesn't and when i charge with the wall charger it seems to cause problems with the camera, i just wanted to see if someone had the same problem, or even just the one in the camera....
I believe everyone got their atrix with the bh6x, don't know why mine came with bh5x...
Well, I have bh6x.
The battery was always charging to 100%
Untill last Tuesday.
I am on epinter's JellyBean, I was getting up to 30hrs of battery life. On Tuesday I dropped my phone, not a big hit but enought to cause the battery fell off. It was at around 75% at the time. Once I put it back in it showed 1%. Wipe stats, rebooting, nothing changed. Now after a full night of charging the meter shows 30% max. The battery seems to be fully charged as the batt calibration shows 4200mAh and the battery still lasts a very long time it just reports the wrong percentage.
Anyone knows what could cause it and how to fix it?

Well, i think you are in the case that upndwn4par said. For that there is a post in the developer section that is called Atrix battery fix, something like that, you can search it.
There are some other methods in another post that consisted in charging and disconnect the battery from the phone and wait for the question mark to appear in the screen, then putting it back again and let it charge for a while, after that it will show you 100%, but for me it only worked for 1 time. I think the post is called something like " The ultimate battery guide" .... i can't remember exactly the title

I also have this problem
same, i have got 2 offical battery, and 2 china, and if i change the battery, even if they are fully charged, my Atrix report wrong value....
The battery fix by jaggernaut is for Gingerbread. I am running JellyBean.
By the way: funny thing happened: I dropped the phone again, so the battery fell out abruptly again... Now it reports the percentage properly...

Battery drain problem

Hi all,
I have read almost every threads related to this problem but nothing solves my battery drain problem
Everything was fine with my battery until one day I was at work and didn't have my charger so my phone went off because of empty battery. After that when I pluged my charger battery wan't charge at all, it was dead completely. I went to the store I buy new battery but I still have problem with draining very fast. It takes a lot of time to even charge the battery to 100%...after 10 hours of charging battery is just 30-40% full. One time battery was at 68% and I turned phone off...after turning it on again after few seconds battery is at 28%...
I tried everything that I could find in other threads - factory reset, deleting cache, dalvik cache, battery stats, calibrating battery, putting phone in flight mod, checking battery stats, background apps, removing SD card, deleting all apps, turning off media scaner...but nothing helps, battery is still charging very slow and drains very fast...
I have JB 4.1.2 stock rom on my phone and also tried with gingerbread 2.3.3 stock rom but problem is still there...
What could be a problem?? Please help...

Yes, i tried with original AC adapter, usb cable and even with HTC AC adapter...
The usb port might be damaged...I'll guess your battery never get's 100%, that's why it's drained too fast.

That's true, in last 2-3 days I'm trying to charge it but I didn't get 100% yet...not even when I shutdown the phone...it shows 100% but when I unplug the charger it's on 40-50% only.
It look like my problem is solved
I'm not sure what solved my problem but here is what I did last:
I have removed SD card from the phone and deleted Google Services App, then I turn on flight mode and connected phone to AC adapter...battery was at 28% and it tooks about 5-6 hours to fully charge the battery. After that I have disconnected the charger and after 15 hours my battery is at 88% with some minimal use of the phone (few SMS, 5-10 minutes on the internet via wi-fi and some settings). I also tried to turn off the phone and power it again and everything is normal, I didn't lose any percentage of the battery like before. I also have putted back my SD card and there is no problems ( it has same files like before, it's not formated ).
I'm very satisfied with this battery life so far, I never had better
So, to conclude this, it looks like Google Services was draining my battery or maybe it was because of the new battery so it needed to be formed.
Anyway, I hope that this will be usefull to someone with same problems.
I'm glad you sorted it out mate. Lol with some search it looks like that Google Services app is causing many people battery problems.

Battery drain problem

Hi, I've got a quite common problem - battery drain. I'm not such a noob, so I understand the way how the battery drain works (I mean why does it happen). It happened after changing the sim card. My sim card stopped working at some moment, so I decided to change it. After that I noticed that my Droid does not turn on. I plugged it into a charger, it got charged normally to 100%. But the battery is draining now constantly. I Changed rom, I wiped all the data, I did even restore backup from march, when the device was 100% functional.
I'm afraid I can not have a replacement as it is rooted, and a repair is almost impossible (I live in Poland).
Any ideas? Maybe someone had similar issue?
PS I got smthing like 10h of standby. That sucks.
PPS It seems that the battery alone is ok, as the phone is heating (so it means that there is energy stored inside)
Have you tried calibrating the battery?
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
By what? Charging to full and then discharging to 0%? Yes, I did xD Smthing like 5 times this week
Wipe everything, clean install a rom, download a battery calibrator app from the market and let it charge to a 100% and then let it die to zero
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
As I said before, I already did that
But use the battery calibrator
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
Battery is calibrated. The problem is not here. The problem is that battery is drained and it seems that there are not many things left that could cause the drain. Please stop posting as I can see that you are not giving any new ideas.
your battery may be just degrading all of a sudden. does it die incredibly fast if you leave your phone in safe mode all day?
Yes, I tried safe mode, without success. It doesn't seem that battery is degrading, as the phone heats up (so the battery must have energy inside)

What temps we talking? Try temp monitor app also of its discharging improperly it will heat up. Get a app like gsam and have it record what rate it's discharging at, sounds like a bad bat though to be honest. EDIT just noticed your rooted. And that you don't want to replace because of jag options. I suggest of your up to it to open the phone and disconnect the battery for a while. Couldn't hurt.

Talking about the opening of the phone, this is someting that I want to avoid. I can do that, after nothing works. Any ideas what could happen?
I've noticed it's happened to me but closing out processes and hard rebooting the phone seems to have cleared that.
Quick Note:
go to settings, battery, and uncheck Fast boot, then shutdown and turn back on. Let me know how that goes.

nope. No effect
1. What rom, kernel, recovery, and radio are you using?
2. I understand you charged to 100 and then let drain to zero, but did you reset your battery stats in recovery?
3. Do you have GSam installed?
1. Tried Supercharged, stock dna, hatka supreme (or something like that),
recovery: CWM
kernels: Blackout, crampler
Radio: the new one xD (The one that came with v2.04)
2. I charged to 100 and drained. During that I changed roms, did factory reset etc.
3. Nope, I've used (and still use) wakelock detector. The GSam seems to provide less data.
After all these weeks the problem is still present. I hope someone can help.
A Suggestuions:
Try an older microusb lead and slow charge from a usb 2 port, sometimes a battery has trouble with a charge sticking - try slow things down and slow charge the phone see if that helps.
I tried even the netbook usb port (350mah), still no luck.

but did you try it when the phone was at 0% and make sure your not using the fast ports, also try slowing it down further if you have any dvd players etc they will only push out around 100 to 200 mah may be worth trying.
Bar that i think the battery is naffed, i would say underclock but if you have tried safe mode its safe to assume itts not going to help..
The only other thing i have heard of but never tried is to keep drain the phone completely and then charge constanly by mains for 2-3 days. if you have tried everything else may be worth a shot.
What app or apps are draining the battery and how much time does it take?
There are no apps draining. The most impact (htc battery app) has got phone idle and wifi. After turning off wifi nothing happens, taking out the sim or turning on airplane mode does not help either

[Q] Something wrong with my device/battery

This is not happening for the first time...
Ever since I rooted my device and flashed Android Revolutionary Rom on it, I noticed some weird behavior with my device/battery.
Last night I drained my battery to 6% and I turned it off. This morning I charged my phone with the phone stayed off and when the battery indicator screen lighted up it was showing that 50% juice remains. Since this is not happening for the first time, this time I would like to test on it to see whether there's really this much juice remains. So I turned my phone on and as expected, the battery indicator shows 50++% left. So I play around with it and I noticed the screen flashing terribly after some time. Not long after that the phone hang there and I had to do a hard reset by pulling out the battery. Before that, I can see that the battery is drained to around 20%. I was unable to power it on after pulling out the battery and when I connected my device to the charger, nothing happens (no display, no LED). So I left it there charging and after some time, finally the LED is lighting up (So, I assume that I drained the battery COMPLETELY just now). I can switch on the device afterwards and it shows 6% battery remains. I wonder why is this happening as this only happens when I charge my device with it turning off. Something wrong with the battery? Device? Or I have to do battery calibration?

Let it charge to 100% first before using. Then check how is the battery usage.
There might be an issue with the battery also. If it is swollen then it's time to get a new one.
Try using another battery and see. If it works fine on other battery then your battery needs to change,
The problem could also be in the ROM. Something could have gone wrong during installation even though it may look fine. If this is the case then reflash the ROM with a full wipe. If the problem still remains, return to stock rom and see.
I had the exact same problems, the screen flashes and stutters, network signal is lost and the phone turns off, it is due to uncalibrated battery.
There's a simple fix, download battery calibration from play stor (green android icon with percentage), charge your phone to 100% without using it, then click battery calibr. inside that app, then doscharge it till 0% (do your normal usage as ussual) and then charge it back to 100%
For healthy battery life don't let it drain lower than 10% it's the li-ion physics and always charge it fully, don't charge from 0 to 30-50-60% because the ions in the battery will not have a good flow.
Everything has it's lifespan but if it's configured and used properly it can have a long lifespan
Also to mention, if my recommendation doesn't work, your battery could be swolen due to inproper charging / heavy oc-ing or your charger is messed up.
Also to say, that flickering occured to me when i flashed a new rom and when i do lot of reboots, then the batterystats freak out, the voltages also and also your phone.
Charhe and use it properly, try to stay with a rom at least a couple of days to see how it'll go.

The battery usage is normal, and its not swollen. I guess I will try to calibrate the battery or reflash the ROM again.
