[Q] Tempted to order the AT&T Lumia 920 unlocked from Expansys, what will be broken? - Nokia Lumia 920

[Q] Tempted to order the AT&T Lumia 920 unlocked from Expansys, what will be broken?
Because the Rogers Lumia 920 is black only and I am actually a Bell customer here in Canada and I have a decent deal with them without a contract, I am tempted to order the unlocked Lumia 920 from expansys.ca.
However, what will not work if I do that? From a cursory glance at the Internet, it seems that MMS and possibly Internet Tethering may not work. Has anyone tried this yet?

I just saw the category is "unlocked". It would be interesting to know how they can sell unlocked AT&T versions.

Where do you see that it's unlocked? A high price alone does not mean that.

I'd get that in writing or be darn sure you can return it. Then...order and play with it to see. Then report back here

I am not at all concerned that it will be available unlocked. I am concerned that all the features of an unlocked Lumia 920 will work on Bell. Specifically in the past users have had issues with MMS and Internet Tethering... I am hoping somebody else has jumped on this device from expansys.ca and can share their experiences.

BTW, the unlocked version from Expansys Canada is $800. You may want to check out Clove, where it is priced at $630. I would assume that tethering should work on an international unlocked version. I may check out the ones from Clove, rather than buy a (hard to find) Rogers version.

Unless I am mistaken, the international version will not work with Bell's LTE network. Bell requires 1700MHz currently don't they? http://www.clove.co.uk/nokia-lumia-920
The LTE frequencies listed on the Clove website are 800 / 900/ 1800/ 2100 / 2600. The AT&T device does support 1700. I don't want HSPA+ if I can get LTE.

Good catch!
The LTE Bands listed on the international version are 800/900/1800/2100/2600 while the Rogers version has 700/850/1700/1900/2100.

The AT&T version also supports 700/1700 for LTE:

Sot it should work. Why are you so sure that Expansys isn't able to unlock the phones? I am hoping to hear back from them tomorrow. The Nexus 4 is starting to look pretty compelling at this point, no hoops to jump through and a great price. I just really like Windows Phone and am excited about it but I do have limits.

Just a guess, but I think most of the hesitation around unlocking has to do with the fact that there is apparently an AT&T exclusivity agreement, and that sales of unlocked phones is prohibited by that. Nokia really didn't do themselves any favors if this is the case.
I honestly can't believe that Microsoft didn't set it up so you could order them straight from MS, and set it up like the Nexus 4... but then this type of reasoning requires logic, which it seems most companies in this business are completely bereft of.

Oh I know the phone arrives @ AT&T locked. But most carriers will now unlock them for a fee. Rogers charges $50, Bell charges $75. I am assuming that AT&T does something similar, and thus outfits like Expansys can take care of this for you (and take care of importing and other niceties) and sell the phone at a premium? I emailed them about it, hope to hear back soon.

Windows Phone 8 includes MMS setup now, so there's no need for a Nokia-supplied network setup app and there's little worry about getting MMS working.

Reports are trickling out that AT&T is refusing to provide unlock codes for the 920's. Not sure how true that information is, but I would be cautious!

So I emailed Expansys, they confirmed the AT&T Lumia 920 IS unlocked. However, reports on the Nokia Canada Facebook page indicate that a user on a different network could NOT get MMS nor tethering to work on an unlocked Rogers 920. I'd imagine that the AT&T would have the same problem. *sigh* almost ready to give up here. Nokia has made it basically almost impossible to get an unlocked Lumia in North America. They obviously hold Canadian customers in contempt. Perhaps they don't even deserve my business. It's too bad its a nice phone Super discouraged right now.

I totally feel your frustration. I too am with Bell and want a 920. my problem is I want a RED one. and rogers for some insane reason only carries black. (rogers logo color is what? RED)
I have been hunting around for a unlocked RED 920 sense its launch. all I keep finding are the UK versions of the phone.
I have gotten so confused with trying to figure out which phone supports Bell LTE that I may be giving up soon.
I don't want to toss out 6-800 $ for a phone that only partly works. the whole reason I am in the market for a new phone is wifi tethering.
lets see what comes first, nexus 4 in stock or me locating a red 920 for bell network. (heck I would settle for a white one now)

Going by NaviFirm, there's a red Rogers variant. Hope you get that. The Access Point app has worked perfectly for me for tethering and MMS.

A, total bs, you really did not think of the fact that a phone from the states would not work in canada? Bull**** you just want someone to get the unlock code for you because you bought the phone not knowing it would not work and are screwed now.
Yes i know stupid mistaek
I bought the american version because the canadian version could not work on my carrier Mobilicity. Most mobilicity phones come unlocked and i thought that because they used the same frequencies that T mobile would too. Yes i know stupid mistake should have done it in america. And it's not stolen

Seriously you two should NOT give answers if you do not know wtf you are talking about. ALL t-mobile Vibrants are sim locked ie you cannot use it in any other country (ie with other carriers, even tmobile outside the US) but the united states and even here you cannot use it with any other carrier except t-mobile. I am about to call tmobile and have mine unlocked too so I can use it in Canada and Europe.
I usually buy t-mobile sim cards in Europe but I need my phone unlocked to be able to do that. But I will admit, since the Vibrant is pretty much the same as all the other Galaxy S phones, I also thought it could be used everywhere Tmobile was available (sans the simlock).
To the OP, go to Ebay if tmobile cannot help you, there are many companies that will unlock your phone for you for a fee. Or you can use the unlock generator from this site (but there have been mixed results with that). But even with the phone unlocked, does not mean it will get all the ranges oversees as it does here. Tmobile uses different Hz oversees than they do in the states so you may not get 3G (not sure, just using my experiences from other phones), so you may wanna check on that before going through all the effort of unlocking etc etc. You may be better off with a i9000 in Canada if thats your primary residence.

Thanks for the help o will look into both those methods you stated
go to Market, and look for SGS Unlock, if the free version can not generate the unlock code, go for the Pro version.. or you could do it yourself for free by following instructions here:

[Q] Differences in AT&T model and unlocked/unbranded?

Hi all,
I've decided to bite the bullet and switch carriers just so I can upgrade from my HD7 to the Titan. Keep in mind I will be unlocking the phone for use on Telus in Canada which is compatible with AT&T 3G.
However I am trying to figure out if there is any benefit to getting the AT&T variant over the unlocked, unbranded model.
I see that on the box for the AT&T model it shows 4G compatible which is cool. So I would assume that using it on Telus would also give me 4G speeds. On the specs for the unlocked model it only shows 3G so I'm wondering if that's not entirely true. I also read somewhere HTC may have included Beats technology in the AT&T version but I doubt it since I haven't heard anything else about that.
I think I'd prefer an unbranded model over the AT&T one but also wondering if anything comes bundled as well that might make one better over the other. Also are the hardware specs identical?
Any help on this would be great
should be no difference or
the only difference is it would be sim locked for their network only the unlocked will work on either telus or at&t without trouble, you could work on sim unlocking the at&t version and that might be a little troublesome, I could be wrong but telus and at&t are promoting FAUX G which is still using 3g with increased speed boost if I am getting this right, hspa+
so the hardware is the same with some minor cosmetic differences (carrier branding vs none) the os and ui with msft strict requirements will be pretty much the same and you could easily uninstall carrier bundled apps, since you do live in canada I would just get the unlocked euro one, you will and I do notice that it switches from H to 3G and then E for Edge every now and then, but if you know how to do it get the at&t version and sim unlock it
Well the unlocked unbranded version uses 3G on 850/900/2100 MHz. AT&T uses 850/1900 MHz. It appears to me that I'm getting HSPA on my Titan, but not HSPA+, but I haven't really tested it very much. You'll have to check what Telus uses for HSPA+ to check if that will work.
Holding down the Windows/Start button brings up the Microsoft Tellme voice activated stuff. It works fine, but the lady has a British accent. This isn't a big deal.
The charger that ships with the unlocked version is the British Standards 1363 plug. Mine also had a BS 1363 to NEMA 5 adapter (aka UK to US), but it was separate from the box, so I think the company I purchased from, eXpansys, threw that in for free. Of course it includes a micro USB charging cable, so any computer USB port or USB wall charger would work, even if you can't use the included charger.
and you know what too with that womans british accent i think the phone is programmed to understand english with an accent, my voice to text experience has been less than stellar lately and my british accent is terrible LOL
Thanks everyone for the info!!
However I'm curious as to which model will give me HSPA+... If anyone can confirm that I'd appreciate it
it dont matter IMO, it's so fast already i love it

Get the ATT version. The unlocked Euro version will not connect to the same 3G bands. As for 4G don't get your hopes up there is no real 4G yet. Until a standard is set any one can say it has 4g if it. 000001 MB over the Max 3g connection.
Well I took my chances and just bought the ATT version off a seller on eBay. We made the deal for $630US incl. shipping. I don't know what the phone sell for off contract but it's the cheapest one I could find that wasn't already open or used. He also sent in a request for an unlock code for it so I'm hoping we'll be able to get one.
I remember the horror when I couldn't get an unlock code for my HD7 and had to wait a week before the codes were available.
Anyway.. it's being sent by UPS so should have it by Weds next week Now I hope it's not a lemon or I'm screwed!!

My dead-end problem.
mine come from UK, and yes, the lady inside the phone almost never recognize my English Voice Pattern, even the simplest: IMDB.
It is funny when i am foreign, i was studying British English at home and now only Americans can understand me. LMAO.
I mean, my HD7 T-Mobile almost never have trouble in using the voice to open stuffs, but my UK Titan is a pain in the ass.
By the way, i would recommend double check everything because my turn-by-turn Navigation of Bing maps doesn't work at US for UK version. If you are really need Turn-by-Turn, i would recommend the AT&T version because it is designed for US Road, maybe Canada too. But we also have other alter maps like Nokia Maps is coming out, or navigon... blah.
If not, the Sim-Free Quad-band Unlocked Titan from Europe is also sweet. I can hit home anytime and use any sim without paying $30-$45 for an unlock code and worry about 3G Frequency since it is the world phone.

That is true. I have this problem and no solutions exists yet. "Display language" in the Settings has "English" with no US/UK selection. It is UK effectively. Bing Maps will therefore have no voice guidance, and speech accessibility (announcing caller name, etc.) don't work, and you need to have a British accent for it to understand you.
I guess we'll have to wait for an AT&T ROM to flash on our devices.
this is true! i just realized my bing maps doesn't work either, it shows my location and will tell me where something is in relation to it but it cannot give me directions, thank god for the turn by turn navigation app which i use frequently, bing maps cannot provide me directions, and it would be great if my voice to text would work as well, yes we will have to wait for some cooked roms to come our way,

my thing is and I don't know if any other us euro titan owners are experiencing this, but i have a great rate and unlimited data plan with at&t because my device is not recognized in their system, if I were to install and at&t rom in the future , would ma bell immediately see my titan and slap a capped data plan on my account?

Starting today, they will probably recognize your phone... lol
Doesn't matter which ROM it runs, they can see it as "HTC Titan" and apply any restrictions they wish.
From the ATT site on the Titan specs: *4G speeds delivered by HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul.
Also, ATT sells the Titan new for $549.99 without contract and free shipping.
See attachment
I was in a mall today with 2 outlets for the AT&T Titan: the Microsoft Store and an AT&T store.
I entered the IMEI for both shops' floor models into htcimeiunlock.com, and for both of them the site claimed to have the codes immediately available, for $25. I've had good luck with that site in the past so I believe that at least for the first batch of Titans the codes are readily available for $25 or so.
Contrast that with AT&T, who probably won't have or give the codes for months, if ever.

what codes are you referring to? the $25 app cards? everyone is going to get them, i don't see why at&t would take time on this, this is sanctioned by msft, all you have to do is go on the msft's own side enter your imei proof of purchase and voila you get a $25 app card mailed to you i believe
and also at&t is a great network! they 10x better coverage than tmobile, i've had horrible experiences with tmobile letting me down, you can have the bestest shiniest most advanced phone out there and but its a useless paperweight if your carrier lets you down
"Codes" == SIM unlock codes (thought that was obvious from my mention of "htcimeiunlock.com").
Good luck getting them from AT&T any time in the next few months, even for a phone purchased at unsubsidized price.
Not a big deal for some folks, but some of us like to travel abroad with our phones and use them with local SIM cards, which makes unlocking critical. Fortunately, there's a non-AT&T source for the codes for HTC devices... you're SOL if you want to travel with a Samsung Mango phone!

[Q] Updates in the US

Imported this bad boy to the US, but with Nokia releasing new updates, will they ever reach the US? I have a feeling that it may never be rolled out here... If so are there any other alternatives to update?

Did you get to avoid paying VAT on your purchase?
I'm pretty sure the update isn't rolled out by region, more like IMEI groups.
Isn't Market Place done by region your account is registered to? Maybe updates are the same?
You could also try conencting via a VPN in a region where it's released, see if it picks up an update?
I've had two updates so far, so would of thought most people would have had atleast one?
I did get to avoid VAT I'll check again tonight as another update was released. I just haven't received any messages telling me to update. Thanks for the info!

I really want this phone, but need to be sure that Internet Sharing will be enabled first, or it's a waste of my money.
Hey, keep us posted would you? I'm getting mine this Monday from Amazon and curious to see if Zune will detect the update in Burbank, Ca.
Need WiFi tethering as I use for my Kindle Touch WiFi, but it's not a deal breaker.
Also, one or two people have posted some anomalies with the update concerning the battery indicator. ..
Hey halfnelson.. does the phone accept your AT&T GSM SIM card as it is or did you have to cut it to a lesser size to fit?
Someone on O2 in Europe wrote they had to cut theirs?
The Lumia uses a microSIM, so yes it would need cutting (unless you had one already, of course).
I trimmed down my GIffgaff one no problem.

Hey halfnelson.. does the phone accept your AT&T GSM SIM card as it is or did you have to cut it to a lesser size to fit?
Someone on O2 in Europe wrote they had to cut theirs?

It did accept my regular sim after I cut it. Be sure to do it correctly, or else the contacts won't match up
I researched it and decided to wuss and shell out the $20 for a T-Mobile micro sim.. Will phone activate when I get the phone Monday. Failed too many shop and craft classes to trust myself cutting.
Hey any news on your update?
I've got another ? for the OP.
The website you bought from, with the best price I've seen, does not specific the WCMDA/HSPA bandwidths to differentiate if it's the quad-band or one of the two different tri-bands. Which carrier are you using here in the US and is the 3G fully functioning for you?

I'm on Att and get fully functioning HSPA+. it uses the 850/900/1900/2100 bands for 3g/HSPA+.

This is good to know, cuz the product page doesn't list them. I spent waaaay too long last night looking for a UK site that sells quad-band HSPA. Have it narrowed down to two, thanks to your confirmation here.
I'm kinda keen on the cyan.
Although many sites say they don't have the right bands, all the lumia devices have the bands I said above.

Pull the sim tray out and look at the model number.. will be RM-801 or something... what model do you have?
One Update Came Through - T-Mobile USA
So I have..
OS: 7.10.7740.16
Firmware: 1600.2475.7720.11414
But I am only getting Edge Data.
Have Hard Reset and I'm hoping that this is just a new SIM getting onto the system (customer service warned me to allow 2 hrs for full services)
Otherwise could be a deal breaker.
Hoping not; a chap at the TMobile store in Burbank where I live said another customer came in with the same phone bragging away on it so hope this is just a temp thing..
Beautiful device though!!
The Lumia doesn't do AWS, EDGE is the best you'll get from T-Mobile US.
Yep; I found that out... Hopefully AT&T will buy out T-Mobile..

Hopefully AT&T won't be able to buy T-Mobile. Talk about market concentration and increased rates. The acquisition doesn't mean that tmo phones will magically start working. The changes you'd hope to see would not be immediate.

Chances of AT&T being carrier unlockable 100%?

So I'm going to have to assume that since the phone is exclusive (at the moment) to AT&T that they'll do what they did to everyone with the Lumia 900 and not allow it to be carrier unlocked.
Anyone else feel the same? I highly recommend this time around that people wait for any confirmation or confirmed reports of unlocking BEFORE actually buying this phone. I for one didn't enjoy looking at my 900 sitting in my drawer for 2 months before I sold it and took a hit on my wallet.
None, mine is locked
Its locked! I bought an at&t 920 with no contract from best buy and the phone is locked... my tmobile card got discriminated against as soon as I entered it... hopefully straight talk doesn't get the same redhead stepchild treatment as well...
6 month carrier exclusivity...
You can expect any new phones from AT&T, not just 900 and 920, have the same treatment. Hardly anything new. Even the old Galaxy S2 which was released to 3 carriers at the same time get the same 6-month lock out period.
I bought mine off contract and called ATT to get an unlock code. They took my IMEI, submitted a request, and said I should hear back in 3-5 business days. Will let you guys know how it goes.

Yes, you can buy an off contract 920 from AT&T store. But whether or not you will get unlock code from AT&T is crap shot. Some may get lucky but most will be denied for the so called exclusivity period.

For other brands, eBay typically is pretty good. But if pass experience with Nokia Lumia 900 holds true, you won't get unlock code from other places either.

does this mean its the most stable way to get unlock code?
does it have a risk?
i dont want to buy a lock 920 back to Europe but i cant use it ._.
I wouldn't buy one from US AT&T despite the price.
Chances are you won't be able to unlock it for 6 months and then have it useless for that time.
Canadian Rogers is the best bet if you could get it somehow as they're apparently unlocked.

I'm not sure what you mean there. But what I said is that there was NO unlock code can be obtained ANYWHERE in first 6 months for Nokia L900. I expect L920 is the same. All the ebay unlock vendors share the same database and most of them will take your payment first. Then after a while they will refund your money due to unable to find unlock code for you. Typically, you can buy unlock code for Samsung phones rather fast. HTC, maybe a few weeks or month or two after release. But Nokia seems to keep its unlock code database rather tight.

It's not certain if Rogers ones will continue being unlocked. The ones they were selling were part of some weird early batch (many are speculating they were related to the //build DEV phones). The phone still isn't listed on their website and they still haven't given a release date (even though they technically already released it by selling a small batch).

I have confidence that Roger version is unlocked because I heard someone said that Roger only has 1 month exclusive. Also, expecting in stock for these at Roger will begin tomorrow and Microsoft CA said in a FB post that Roger will start selling phones on 11/13.
Confirmed no Unlock Code
Received an official "yea L920 can't be unlocked right now bc Nokia won't let us" reply after ordering it from the only place I found that listed the L920 AND allowed me to order it (see attached). American cell carriers suck (excluding Tmobile bc they don't care what phone you have)...and we wonder why the rest of the world hates America! Spend $500 retail and can't drive 20 minutes into Mexico and use your phone.

For $99 with a free wireless charging pad, 99% of the users will care less about unlockability of the phone. They will drive to Mexico and continue use their phone alright then come back crying wolf when they received their bill.
Rest of the world don't subsidize cell phones as much as US. Most ppl buy their phones at full price. Imagine you have to buy all your phones at $500 to $800 a piece, what will you say?
Unlocked w/o Subsidy vs. Locked w/Subsidy
If you read my post, I paid $500 retail for my phone...I did NOT get a subsidized phone. I understand if AT&T had said "get it for $99, no unlock...buy it for $500...get it unlocked." Instead, they said, buy it for $500 like the rest of the world...still get screwed. Big difference! I am from Africa...born and raised...traveled to 37 countries so I know all about Subsidy vs Retail pricing. It's the pay-full-price-and-still-get-screwed mentality of AT&T that bothers me.
(And before someone says, then why didn't you buy it from Rogers unlocked instead of AT&T...I'll respond...this is my 3rd phone - Galaxy Note, L920 and iPhone - and I love hacking with phones and figuring them out so I bought this on my friends ATT account for retail since I wanted the white and at the time no one online including Rogers had the white one available).

I know you paid retail price and know how you feel. But in US, majoity of ppl don't pay retail and could care less about unlock. The No.1 cell phone carrier is Verizon where most of its phones are CDMA only. There is no such thing as unlocked for CDMA phones. Neither Verizon, nor Sprint will alow any phone that does not have its brand name printd on into its network As such, most pp won't think their carrier suck because of lack of unlock. If you think you paid retail and deserve unlock code, you don't know anything about US carriers.
<end of debate...back to productive thread>
This is my last reply...I won't use a valuable thread to argue:
- I posted my confirmation so others knew not to waste their time right now with the very few who claim to be able to Unlock the L920.
- I knew ATT wouldn't give me an unlock code or unlocked phone, I had HOPED they would do the right thing for full-retail customers. I'm not complaining...I'm trying to find a solution so I can help others who don't know as much how they can get theirs unlocked. I'm not naive...but that doesn't change the fact that ATT selling a full retail phone without giving you an unlock code is still wrong...and no I didn't expect them to do the right thing...they're a US carrier!!
- I do know the carriers...and you absolutely can put a non-Sprint and/or non-Verizon phone or device on their network. I have taken a Sprint MIFI device, registered it and used it on my Verizon data service. My close friend works for VZ wireless as an device SE and he confirms they do this all the time, they just don't market it nor do they want the 80% to know you can do this so they lie and tell you you can't. I've had friends do the same with a smartphone they purchased from Verizon and moved over to Sprint...same process. Push them hard enough, they'll add the other device to their network as long as it's CDMA.
- I'm here to help others find the "Gevey Unlock" equivalent for the L920...not debate the debacle of US carriers Let's refocus to finding a workaround/hack/something to help get the L920's that are locked or crippled working better for the users of the forums

Unlock services for ATT Lumia 920

I have just place an order with theunlockguys.com, they said it's going to take 2 business days.
I will report my result here.
Has anyone anywhere ever actually got the code from one of these "unlockers" for any phone at a time when the carrier was not giving the codes to anyone?

I highly doubt that it will work. The only way to get an unlock code is to get it from AT&T, who as previously stated, are not giving them out.

Aren't you worried about being stuck on 2G if you use AT&T's version on Tmo?

OP,
Please only post if you actually get the code. We have seen this same pattern on L900 forum for 6 months. They all take your money but none of them can give you a code.

With the 920, they will be able to get 2g, 3g and LTE, just not Tmo 4G if I read it right with the frequencies offered.

For T-Mo, there is no LTE yet. And its 4G is the same thing as 3G. So, if you can't get T-mo 4G, you can't get 3G either. You stuck with 2G.
If you're in a refarm area you will get 3G even without T-Mobile's magic 3G frequency.
The unlockguys.com is no go:
Hello Oscar,
Thank you for your order, but we regret to tell you that we are currently not processing any orders for all Nokia Lumia 920 phones until the codes becomes available again. We have fully refunded your entire payment of $27.95. I will contact you as soon as the Nokia Lumia 920 code will become available. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.
Unlocked 920
I went into the new Microsoft Store in Toronto today and picked up a locked 920 for $550. Came home and used cell unlocker . net and my phone was unlocked in 2 hours. Way cheaper than what Rogers was charging. P.S. Now running on Wind Mobile in Canada!

Awesome, as far as I can tell you're the first to confirm an unlock from a third party unlocking service.
Ehh it wasn't an AT&T unlock.
He got it from Canada so it was likely from Rogers.
There is still and probably won't be an unlock from Att for 6 months.
There are a lot of 920s on ebay saying they're unlockable from Att which is utter bs.
You have been warned.
