For a while I've been using my Nook Tablet 16GB with booting off the SD. I'm running CM7 by Team B, mostly stable with what's probably the wifi issue. I've never liked the interface too much but for how much I was using it, it was ok. I recently got a smartphone with ICS, and now I'm wanting to switch to ICS or Jelly Bean for my nook. I never really booting from EMMC so it can be gone. I did a dd of the SD card to back it up, and installed a rom on EMMC. My biggest concern right now, other than all the tweaks and tuning I need to get it good, is how to I copy my apps and app settings from the SD to EMMC. They're all free apps, I'm cheap and don't bother pirating since turning off wifi gets rid of ads, but I want to keep all my settings and save points. I use FreeBSD a lot but have Linux available if all the files are on extfs. Android's a different beast than any *nix so familiarity isn't really helpful. What files do I need to copy, and how to get them onto emmc, so I can treat it as upgrading the OS instead of a clean install?

If they are free apps then open up play store and re-install them.
The other route is you will need money to get at least titanium backup pro if you feeling legal "AAarge" captain hook not. Once you have a backup just restore the apps not data to any versions of android you want.

It's not getting the apps back on that's the issue, but the settings. I don't want to have to start everything from scratch.

Android's linux in kernel only. Since I'm guessing most people only worry about their apps and not settings, I'll have to search through the file system.

Ive been thinkn about getting titanium backup. Im trying to find out who has it already n who used it with success after updates. Especially one after ICS. So from what I heard/read it can back up apps n games and the system stuff n data. FOR the apps n games it actually backs up the apk or makes copies of them? Like lets say you know there's an update coming or you might have to send tablet to Asus. what steps would you use with Titanium Backup to make sure you can go back to the same apps n setup you had before? I thought I read somewhere here someone had an issue trying to restore info after an update. Is this true? Also I don't have an external micro SD card yet. Is this needed for Titanium or is that the best way to back up? Would backing it up on the Prime itself do any good or will it get wiped on an update or by Asus if sent in?
I have around 150-200 apps already n set alot of stuff up n hate having to manually try to do everything again. IS the built in Asus Backup any good or works just as good as Titanium? I'm using it years ago and is just excellent to backup all the apps on all your android devices. It work really good with ICS. It allows you to save all your app and the data of it. Is a must have tool.
You can try it free, you just have to restore one by one which is a major pain. Also on my bionic some apps don't restore right and it hangs, remember that app and don't check it in the batch list, then try and restore just the app and then just data. That problem may be because I was using t bolt backups on the bionic, but I never had any problems on my Droid X or t bolt.
Titanium backup is the greatest! I have used it for many years across multiple devices. Every time I was getting ready to flash a different rom I would run a backup, flash the rom, and then titanium all my apps back.
Not sure if you have to have an sd card or not, I have always had one when using it. Most of the issues seem to come when people try to restore /system data after flashing to a different rom. All I backup and restore is apps under /data.
It wont backup home screens, widgets on home screens, ringer settings etc. Only apps. Also, with that many apps you are going to want to spring for the premium version. In the free version when you are restoring apps you have to click install on every single one of them. Premium version does it automatically.
I use it and bought the pro key. I love it. Especially when you flash roms. Makes it so much easier. I highly recommend pro. Other wise you will have to it install for each app.

I'm not sure it would restore old apps from HC to ICS well but I haven't tried it. Otherwise it does everything you want. Restoring system files doesn't work so well sometimes but you can manually do that. You can also use it to restore data only to apps like the Alarm Clock for all of your times. One nice thing about the pro version is you can freeze apps which basically removes them from your system but doesn't delete them all the way. Deleting system apps can be an issue when it comes time to update as ASUS updates will not work if you have deleted system files.
It will work on different versions. I backed up on gingerbread and restored on ics on my phone.

I've lurked in the xda-forum awhile. I had a HTC Touch HD ("Blackstone" I think it was) about 4 years ago, rommed it with forum help but still wound up not liking the device so I got rid of it shortly thereafter and went back to simple candybar phone. Got an international/unlocked Galaxy S3 about three weeks ago and it is my first smartphone since then and my first Android phone! Very happy so far but I have several questions so far for some minor irks.
1. Memory management - I am using the GO task manager and my memory usage is regularly between 70%-90%. It's also annoying that the device has 1gb of RAM but it shows up as 779m. Is this high usage normal? I'm guessing it is due to a lot of stock boatware which leads me to my next point.
2. Startup app management - I have tried several apps that promise to manage startup applications but nothing seems to work very well. The best one I've seen so far is Startup Cleaner 2.0 but still things like Google Talk, TripIt and some games still start even though I select them to be disabled on startup. Is there a better utility or is this a weird thing with Android or ICS?
3. Bloatware - Is there a way to uninstall the stock bloatware I don't use like Google Talk, Google+ or ChatON?
4. SD card - I purchased a Sandisk 64gb Micro Ultra SDXC memory card and slapped it in. It shows up when I connect the phone to my PC and I have been transferring files and storing camera pics with it successfully. However, the one thing I can't seem to do is move any apps to it. It seems any program that is supposed to move apps to the SD card doesn't recognize it. For example, in "App 2 SD" it states: "The Device does not have a real primary external storage, or the primary external storage is emulated. Moving app to SD function may not be supported by this device."

Never use task manager, let RAM work for you

Best striped ROM is CheckROMv2, any stock apps you need can download from kitchen.

Think the last guy covered most things but a couple of thing to add.
You don't need titanium backup or even root to remove apps as Ice Cream Sandwich allows you to disable unwanted apps right from the application management menu. The only system apps you aren't allowed to disable are ones which will break your phone, so you can safely freeze unwanted crapware without worrying about breaking anything.
I'm not entirely sure it's a good idea to start with custom roms straight away, maybe you should spend a week or two on stock and playing with what I mentioned above to learn a bit about Android before you dive into the world of root.
Also never listen to anyone when they say this, that or the other Rom is best. There are many great developers on xda and what suits him or me may not suit you.
At any rate my experience with past androids is that performance and battery life aren't all that different between the roms, it's usually only small tweaks here and there which are visible to the user. For example some will remove certain apps or the boot sound. The exceptions would be roms built from source like Cyanogenmod, Aokp and Miui. These feel very different to the Galaxy S stock Rom, although Cyanogenmod and Aokp feel quite similar to each other.

About stock Galaxy S3, yeah good enough for casual users. Some user didn't like bloatware, many can't be deleted and need permission to do that. Peace.. ^_^

That's right you can't delete them but a new feature of ice cream sandwich is that you can freeze them. It's basically the same thing titanium backup does but it works on stock unrooted devices.

If you ignore the various themed components of custom roms then after my tests their is no real diffrence between any of the custom roms as they basically all have the same inside . Advantage over stock almost nil .
Of course custom roms and custom kernels are at a very early stage of development for the SGS3 so far .

I have broken my 8Gb flash 80 G9 and am considering replacing it with the 250Gb HD model (as i can pick one up for a good price)
How much space is there for installing apps on the 250Gb HD model?
I would hope that there is at least the same amount of space in flash memory and the HD is reserved for media content?

yes the gps maps are on the HDD, for the game it is the same

It's 2GB flash chip, data partition (mmcblk0p4) is 1.5GB. Note that Apps2sd (native) is disabled, I can't say if 3rd party would work or not.
You may try to make an additional empty ext4 image and mount it as /data/app using init.d script

Since I started installing custom roms I don't have a lot of space left.
Just to make an example:my most space consuming apps are: chrome, firefox, angrybirds space, google currents and facebook. All togheter they sum up to 134mb and with all the other small apps I have 350mb of free space left.
The other day I couldn't update angrybirds space because it said I have not enough space. I had to uninstall and then re-install the app from scratch and it worked.
The biggest problem is that I can't install any other game or "big" app like autodesk sketchbook or photoshop because it says so.
If I could go back I would get the 16gb version and maybe buy an extra SD.
btw, apparently there's no way to move apps to the hdd.

This sounds bad.
Seems to me like the 250Gb HD model is crippled.
I want to install lots and lots of apps; ( I could install plenty of apps with my old 8Gb non-turbo) and now it seems that if I buy the 250Gb HD model I can install fewer apps?!?
OR is this only a problem when using custom ROMs? If I use the stock/default Archos ROMs will I still be able to install lots of apps without running out of space?

I was able to install more apps with the unrooted stock rom.
every day I think about going back, but I need the benefits of rooting.
Right now I'm using a backup app to manage the apps I don't use frequently: when I need to use one of those, I backup a game, uninstall it and then restore the backup of the app I need.
It's not an ideal solution, but in the end it only takes a few minutes to do it.
The real problem for me is the lack of support of app2sd or similar. If someone is able to solve that, the tablet would be fine.

-Rooted/custom firmware uses 400MB of /data space (system image is stored in /data/local) so usable /data space in this case is ~1GB (for apps & app+system data)
-Stock rom (thus also custom ones) does not support native Apps2sd because to HDD access times -much slower than flash memory- and power usage
And don't forget that Gen9 was designed primarily as multimedia center

Set your camera to save to external SD card.
Move any music and remaining pics to external.
Use something like es file manager / download manager to direct any downloads from the Web to external card.
Finally read up on Folder Mount app and use that to point Pretty much anything you want to external card as well.
Move all apps you can to external and get rid of the ones you really don't need.
All that would be a great start.

I would recommend Link2SD.
I have used it with satisfaction on several low memory devices.
Not sure why, I find Link2SD and its options terribly confusing Well, I guess I'll need to learn.
There are a lot of guides and it's not so complex.
The best way to use it is to create a second partition on sd (consider a backup of your data on pc/otg/cloud/...).
As far as I can remember link2sd will ask you the filesystem type and then it will create some script to use it.
Then you can simply tap on an app from the list and press "link to sd".
From the apps list you can do a lot of operation like convert apps to system/user app, freeze/unfreeze, merge an updated app to rom etc. and using the filter this kind of operation will be very easy and fast.
EDIT:
On the plus (paid) version you can link also data.
If you really want to maximize the free space on the device, this option is worth the few moneys.

I've always used it on other devices using AOSP based roms, I don't know if there are problems using it with MIUI.

I know Cyanogenmod 11 did that perfectly, wonder if it's CM thing by default, or did they moved to new (stupid) concept of raping the main storage in later versions
EDIT: Any chance of "linking" bloody Whatsapp to SD completely? I'm in continuous maintenance mode of my wife phone because that **** consumes the storage for all it's worth.

Linking is not the same as moving.
For example, if you move to sd and then remove the sd from the device, widgets and app icons will be removed.
Maybe they will be restored when you insert your sd again, but the order could not be the same.
The same doesn't happen linking.
There are also other benefits, try googling for "link2sd faq".

I'm not using whatsapp so I don't know if it works.
I guess that your are talking about the "whatapp" directory on which msgs and media are store.
If link2sd can't solve your problem, I think that can try to move the whatsapp directory to sd and then manually create a link (keep the original name) on the original position.
Or you can try with apps like foldermount
