Upgrade to this without losing unltd data (requires 1 EXTRA line) - HTC Droid DNA

Basic idea being that SOMEONE ELSE on your account uses their upgrade to this phone, then just swap when they get it.
I didn't think VZW would allow this, but here is my chat with a rep:

You are now chatting with 'Christopher'
Christopher: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
Nate: Yes I have a question about data on my line
Christopher: Sure
Nate: I currently retain unlimited 4G data on my line and I want to know if it's possible for another person on my line to upgrade to the HTC droid DNA, then swap phones with me...
Nate: I would just upgrade my line but I really cannot afford to lose unltd data
Christopher: Sure. When the phone arrives, call customer care to activate it and tell them you wasnt it put on your line.
Nate: so I would be able to retain unltd data still??
Christopher: Yes you will
Nate: Thanks alot that's all I wanted to know, you've been very helpful.
Christopher: If you like I can stay on here while you order in case you have any other questions or concerns
Nate: I am not ready to order yet, I was just asking for future reference, thanks though.
Christopher: ok. Is there anything else I can help you with today/
Nate: Nope, that's it! Thanks
Christopher: Thanks for chatting in please feel free to chat in again if you need more help.

So yeah. I will be paying my dad to upgrade to this phone, then swapping!
He likes his old fashioned LG something or other anyway.
another option for if you are on your own plan is: add another line for 9.99 a month, get phone for 199 ON THAT LINE, switch phone to your line (with unltd data), then take data off the extra line. You basically have an unused line but that's paying 240 (10/mo for 24 mo) rather than 599 for the phone.

I'm confused as hell now because when you call them they threaten you with account audits if you do that. I can confirm the web sales people do state you can still use this loophole though.

Or you can add a ghost line for people without upgrades.

I have spoken with a Verizon rep o over the phone and in person, I have an upgrade available on a line on my family plan and that phone on that line is a Droid Maxx and I was told that I scan use the upgrade from that line and not loss the 4 GB of data on that line and transfer the phone to my unlimited line and keep my data plan. I just have to decide on this Phone or the note.

I kept my unlimited data and got this phone for the $199.99. All you do is upgrade a dumb phone, and when they ship you the phone, activate it on your line instead. Was in a chat and the lady walked me through it. Pretty easy.

Can I get this phone for 199 on an upgrade? Or is 199 strictly new contract price? We're ready to sign a contract either way, but I was wondering if I can just use my (my dads) upgrade online right now for preorder.

Got 50 dollars off because I signed contract (on only one line... weird) but 30 dollar upgrade fee and 12 dollars tax so still ended up being 191 but still. I have a buyer for my rezound for $200 so its like a great free upgrade

Do you have to continue paying for the dumb phone or can you cancel it? What about the $350 ETF? How does this process work can you explain?
I just got done chatting with a rep and found out that I can keep my unlimited 3G data grandfathered plan and use a 4G device on it! So I want to get a new phone but if I can pay $200 rather than $600 for off contract I would like that a lot more.
EDIT: I just looked online elsewhere and saw what I think you did.
1. Already have an existing dumb phone on the contract.
2. Use dumb phone upgrade to buy new phone / put dumb phone on new data plan
3. Transfer phone to youself when it comes in the mail.
4. Put dumb phone back on the old line and make that plan back to dumb phone plan.
Is that what you did??

You can cancel the DATA on the ghost line, but you have to keep the line open, meaning you will pay 9.99 a month for 2 years, aka $240. Which is cheaper than $350 ETF or 599 phone..

My mom still has an old dumb phone on the contract so I will use her upgrade to get a subsidized device. Thanks for the heads up!!!!!
PS. there is no penalty in downgrading the dumb phone back to the old data plan from the new upgraded data plan? Can you explain that?

My grandmother is on my family's account. In order to keep unlimited, we traded upgrades - I use her's, she can use mine (never does XD). She has a dumb phone. What I did was pre-order the phone by 'upgrading' her line to the DNA. This has no effect on the current plan, even when you select the data for it. When the phone comes in the mail, I will simply put it on my line, not hers. Thus it acts like I bought it outright, and just added it to my line, no effect on her line, or my families plan.

How do you upgrade without making it change the data? Does the data only change when you actually activate a device? This is exactly what I am going to do and get the Note 2. I need the HDMI + OTG at the same time feature that the Note 2 has.

Yes, I'm on a family plan with 3 others, all using dumb phones, I have a Rezound.
I used my dad's line (dumb phone) to upgrade to the HTC Droid DNA (data plan required with purchase, $30 minimum)
When it gets here, I will call to activate it, but on MY line and not my dad's/
His shouldn't have to be activated/de activated, but I WILL have to disable data on his line asap.
all should be well.
EDIT: oops, I didn't see it went onto page 2 lol.
a data plan is REQUIRED on the line you choose to upgrade on, you can disable it as soon as you activate the phone on YOUR line, but it's required to actually pre-order the phone.

By activating it on your line instead of the one you chose to upgrade on. Yes, the data only changes when the phone is activated, but only if activated on the line you upgraded, if you activate it on yours, there will be no change to the data which is how you retain the unlimited.

Ok I'm a little confused. If I wanted to keep my unlimited data, could I still pre-order this? There aren't any upgrades available on my four lines and I'd wanna pay that sweet $199. Would I be charged a ETF or not?

You need an upgrade to keep unlimited and get it for $199.99. Or you can just buy it outright for $599.99. You would only get charged an ETF if you cancel a line before the contract period is over.

I always thought that changing the data plan in any way except up would also qualify for an ETF I was not aware about this whole downgrade back to non-data being possible with a dud line.

Having not activated the phone on the non-smartphone line, their plan wouldn't change. It would always stay with no data. You select data in the preorder, but that is only if the phone is activated on that line. You would obviously not do that, and activate on yours instead.

Amazon Wireless has the rezound for a penny.

Just a heads up guys, the penny price works even for adding a line.
Yea, but not upgrade price, which is what most people are doing. $229 to upgrade for those of you that have been waiting! http://wireless.amazon.com/dp/B0061...f_rd_i=G001&pf_rd_p=1332536882&pf_rd_s=left-5
Yeah, but if you're already on a family account, it's a cheap way to get a new phone. $10/month ($240) + $.01 + Cheap dumbphone (to cancel data). and you still come out way less than $299 and especially $649
Just switched back to Verizon and picked two of these up from Amazon for a penny each!! Sprint let me out of my contract because their service is abysmal. They'll be here in 2 days!!! Can't wait!!!!
only for new accounts?... that sucks. I was ready to return this & then order from amazon. oh well.

I am not trying to have a bunch of lines, I already have 4 and only use 3, lol. Luckily since I have a Military/Veteran account I can call and suspend a line for as long as I damn well please for free. But, I would rather pay the $10/month until it goes away, or my girlfriend finally decides to ditch Metro PCS and her Huwaei wannabe smartphone.

Haha, no kidding. Yeah, 10 bucks a month isn't that bad. No point in suspending it.
how does that work with adding a line anyway?
i see the option on amazon labelled "Add a line - to my family account" yet i just have the 1 line right now... so i don't believe it's considered a 'family' thing.

I believe once you add a line to an individual account, you will need to choose from a Family Share plan. You might want to be careful with doing so in case you have been grandfathered in with Unlimited Data though.
I have three lines right now on a family plan with my GF and the third I use as a "home" phone. Thinking about adding another to get a Rezound now.

hmm.. i would worry about the unlimited data(only reason i switched to verizon).
was thinking about canning my t-mobile account & switching over... although on t-mobile i still have that '5 favs' thing + unlimited internet & pay $44/month on it... so unless i could get a better value on verizon then maybe i should just keep it.

I don't see why his voice plan would mess with his data at all. It didn't affect mine.
If you have a family share plan you get 10 favorite people you share. My mom, my brother and I use a combined ~750 minutes/month. I barely make phone calls unless they are for school/work/etc.
meh, i paid $267 on release day fo rthis phone, and i'm not even having any buyers remorse that's making me want to go return it and try to get it online for a penny lol
If you add a new line don't you still need to add a data plan?

I'm not saying it would, but if he/she currently does have unlimited data they may want to verify they would not lose unlimited. It is a possibility changing a Voice Plan could alter that and I would think it could be different than just upgrading a phone and maintaining your same plan (even with an additional line).

Yes, but you can later move that new line to a dumbphone and cancel data no problem.
Sorry for all the questions but i've never done this before. If I opened a new line, how would it affect my current line that it would be moved to, which is an unlimited 3g plan?

You would have to change whatever voice plan you have to a family plan.
Your data feature would stay as it is attached to your current line.
The new line would be a new number with a $9.99 monthly fee + whatever features you attach to that line ($30 data for example).
Oh ok. I already have a family plan. Basically I'd like to know if I'll be grandfathered into an unlimited 4g plan or will I have to choose a tiered one.

Keep Unlimited Data with Cheaper Upgrades than Full Retail

I just thought of this.
I'm on a 4 person family plan all with unlimited data. The 3 other people are willing to give up unlimited but I'm not. I'm willing to pay full price for my phone but I figured out a way to get it for cheaper.
Open a 5th line for $9.99 per month. Use this line's upgrade every 20 months. Swap the upgraded phone with a spare feature phone.
$9.99 x 20 (cost to maintain 5th line) = $200
$250 (subsidized phone after taxes)
= $450
Paying $450 vs $650 for full retail would be a $200 savings. Better than nothing right?
Yes but you would have to have data on that line also for a bit, then dump the data and keep a dumbphone activated

I can just keep data for 1 day and dump it...and that's where the $9.99 x20 comes in. Keeping it activated for 20 months.
The problem is, as soon as you upgraded that line, forcing a new contract, they could, conceivably, seeing as you would be out of contract on the rest of your lines, force you out of unlimited.

good question, I kept data on that line for a month just to be sure I wouldn't have any issues.
Also, if you are going to go this route, better off waiting for big deals like amazon's 1 penny deal.

umm, no they don't. Bought several phones off of amazon, as long as the line stays active, they don't know what you are doing on it. They get a commision based of selling you the line.
I've bought 5 phones on amazon and swapped them between lines and put a dumb phone on one of the lines a month after I got it. No fees.
That's my plan and it'll work don't let people BS you and say it won't. People trollen around because their not unlimited.

I'm a bit confused. I thought that after 06/28/2012, if you upgrade a phone thats on a family plan, with a new one at a subsidized price they force you and all lines in the shared plan to move to the new shared data plans.
That would technically screw the other people with unlimited data on the family share plan. Verizon might be able to get away with this because you have to sign a new contract for the upgrade. This contract would override any previous ones.
I could be completely wrong but I thought the reason you could keep unlimited data if you paid full price for a new phone is you don't sign a new 2 year service contract. Basically if you pay full price for a phone Verizon could care less if you even activate it. Not that a sane person would do this but you could go into a store, pay full retail for a phone and smash it with a hammer right there on the sales counter.
Am I completely missing something?
Another thing I can't figure out are people not in a family share plan. If someone only has 1 line with unlimited data, how can they force you into the new plans if you upgrade your phone at the subsidized price? You can't share data without having another phone.
I believe that after the 28th any line change, other than a device change for warranty or full retail purchase will require a new contract, therefore removing unlimited on all lines.

They can't do that though without letting you out of your contracts. Each line has its own contract.

Don't forget about the taxes and other charges on the line. I have around an additional $8-$9 in taxes and other fees on that line.
My plan was that since my sister has the 2 GB data plan that if I ever had an upgrade in the future, I could give her mine and then buy the phone with her line, then just put my SIM in it. I still keep my unlimited and get the subsidized Price

You don't have to keep data activated at all. They don't require it, yet. I did this with an upgrade to the Tbolt for the reasons you said. Heck, if you buy the phone 250 then pay the 350 ETF you still come out ahead of paying full comp.(albeit not by much.) The actual line charge ends up being about ~14 a month. so really 280 instead of 200. But that being said, its still cheaper than the full retail way. I had the money to buy the Tbolt outright, but I still did it that way because it was cheaper.

No, just on the new line. She never activated data on my "new" line when I bought the thunderbolt. She just activated the sim to my current number and I put it in. Which now, if I did it again, I wouldn't even have to get a new sim. She, the VZW rep, just activated an old Krzr I had on the last line and it is still there without ever having data activated on that line. I was saying that I was never charged extra for not having data on that "new" line even though I used it to buy a "smartphone".

Called Verizon and they told me that the unlimited plan i'm on is guaranteed as long as I'm on a contract. Once under contract, if they change the plan that drastically, you can get out of the plan. I will be off my existing contract in a few weeks. 2 different CS reps said that the month to month plans will not be changed but cannot be guaranteed to stay that way and is very likely to convert to new plans by end of year or early next year.
She recommended just getting a new phone if I wanted to just make sure. I told her I like my phone and really didn't want a new phone or contract. She said that all the other carriers already have plans to implement similar packages so if i wanted to guarantee an unlimited rate, i would have to buy a new phone by the 28th (or pre-order the S3) or just take the risk.
I'm leaning towards the S3 even though i hated my fascinate and droid charge. I wish there was a way around it, but i use 6 gigs a month. I flash roms which reload all my apps, i stream music like crazy while at work and share data with my ipad.
Anyone know if this is true? If getting a contract guarantees me 2 more years of unlimited LTE, i will do it. I guess i could get the razr maxx too.
any reccomendations between the 2?

When I talked to Verizon before getting my RAZR. They said the only way your plan will change, is if you upgrade after the tiered plans take affect. As long as you stayed with your old phone, or payed full retail, you would keep your old plan whatever it may be.

Backup apps local. It saves me time and aggravation.
64gb sd card is my next experiment
Battery life => 2 Days RazrMaxx
Or, as in my case, get your phone outside of Verizon. Then, it's not a contract renewal, it's an activation only since I didn't purchase the phone upgrade through them. I guess it's the same as purchasing it at full retail (unless you get it via ebay or as a trade from someone else). I didn't purchase my through Verizon so I got to keep my unlimited data and it will stay that way until they pry it from my cold, dead hands!
so they were lying? contract is not going to change? they have to honor unlimited as long as i like?

Unless you do an upgrade via Verizon and don't pay full retail price. Basically, you are renewing your contract when you do the upgrade through Verizon. Then, at that point, you are beholden to Verizon to switch to the tiered pricing.
Otherwise, pay full retail price for the phone or get it from someone else that isn't connected with Verizon and then activate it on Verizon, you get to keep your unlimited data plan. I got my phone outside of Verizon so I didn't have to switch to the tiered plan.

I'd call again, maybe ask a supervisor? I've been told at least 3 times that as long as you had service during the "unlimited" era that you would be considered "grandfathered" which means it would stay that way as long as you don't leave and come back and it's still on that same line. You can change the phone number, but if you leave for a period of time by canceling a contract prematurely OR leaving because it's over and try to come back, THEN you would no longer be considered "grandfathered" and would be at the mercy of the new plans. Even if you stay month to month AFTER the contract instead of renewing it, you would still be grandfathered as long as you didn't let the service on that line come to an actual complete end. I used my upgrade on the Razr just in the beginning of April and still have my "unlimited" data.
I left and came back and lost my unlimited. I'm very sad panda. Do everything u can to ensure u keep it even if means stuck on same phone!

I am doing what i can. Basically what i'm hearing from Verizon is that the grandfathering is only going to last till the end of the year and because you're not on a contract is not guaranteed. The only certain thing is they will not convert you next week. But that amount of time is VERY limited, perhaps 6 months before they pull that grandfathering.
Only through a new binding contract will they honor the unlimited rate. So if i get a new phone from them now, i get 2 years vs 6 months. For me at 6gigs a month the difference is $69 currently vs $135 on tiered. 18 extra months on unlimited if i get a contract will save me $1800.
Again, i know it's not a sure thing, but i'm just trying to find out how likely they are to end the grandfathering in 6 months. Even a little likely is too likely for me.

What they mean by taking it away is that they won't honor it any more WHEN you do an upgrade of your phone through Verizon.
There are a number of ways to keep your unlimited data plan:
When it's time to upgrade your phone, purchase the phone at full retail price.
Purchase your phone via a 3rd party and take the phone to Verizon to activate it.
Stay on your current phone.
What it all boils down to is, do NOT renew your contract. Let it expire and stay on the month-to-month contract. Anything that makes you renew your contract to a new 2-year contract with Verizon WILL make you lose your unlimited data.
Since I purchased my RAZR outside of Verizon, I didn't renew my contract with Verizon, hence I kept my unlimited data and will continue to do so until I decide to take a subsidized upgrade through Verizon or leave them and come back at a later time. Otherwise, I will keep my unlimited data plan for as long as I please.
In the end, it IS cheaper in the long run to purchase the phone at full retail price because you'll pay MORE for it through the extra costs of the tiered data plan and the two-year binding contract.
ok, based on what you guys advise, i will keep my razr. i really love it and didn't want to change it.
Just for your guys info verizon does a double data deal every once in a while, in march i got my razr for a penny and got the 5gb plan that got doubled to 10gb... im a heavy user and i keep it under 10gb a month.. if you need more either your really taking advantage by tethering your whole house or doing something illegal...and if u are tethering ur whole house on unlimited lte ur definitely screwing us all over lol but more power to ya....

Listen, folks. If you are on a 2-year contract, once the two years is up, so is the contract. You do not have a contract. You do not have a "legally binding agreement" to hang over anyone's head.
And there is no such thing as a "month-to-month" contract. At the end of the billing period, VZW can change the terms. Because your "monthly contract" is not any kind of agreement that binds VZW to any conditions.
Want an example? Alltel customers were told their data plans, etc, would stay in effect "forever", as long as the customer did not initiate a change in the plan.
Phones could be upgraded every two years at a subsidized price and the data plan would not change.
Now, if a previous Alltel customer upgrades a phone, the data plan for all phones on the account changes.

I kept my unlimited data and plan from Alltel until I upgraded into my bionic and added my wife to my account. My upgrade into my OG DROID, and DROIDX didn't have to change out of my Alltel plan. Not sure where you got your info from.

You could always buy a new phone and turn around and sell it on eBay if you want to stay on your current phone. If you are on contract then you keep your service as-is. If they change your service (even by a few pennies or change the terms of your service) you can get out of the contract. That is a fact. I've done it.
That being said, I really like my Razr Maxx. It has had the best battery of any phone I've used so far (3 others... fascinate, charge and droid 4). It should be getting ICS in the next couple weeks, hopefully (maybe sooner).
The stock Launcher on the Razr Maxx blows. Use Go Launcher or anything else for more features / more customization to suit your needs.
That's my 2 cents.

After your 2 year contract is up, you are on a month-to-month PLAN... not contract. If they decide to take away something that you've had forever you can simply cancel your account.
It has been my experience that 9 times out of 10, talking to the cancellations department will get your XYZ reinstated that they tried to take away from you...but there is always that 10% chance that they follow through with it. Unlimited data may fall under that 10% chance pretty easily or not. Talking with your money and walking away does have power.

I would heed the warnings from the 2 CSR agents regarding so called month-to-month contracts. Once your contract expires, and you don't renew, there's no guarantee that you will be able to keep that unlimited data. VZW doesn't offer month-to-month contracts. Right now, they are saying that you will keep your unlimited data, but I wouldn't trust VZW. The 2 CSR's actually gave you a glimpse into what may be coming down the pipeline.
I would pre-order the SGSIII if your contract expires in July. At least lock up unlimited data for 2 more years. If you don't like it, I'm sure you could find someone willing to trade you a RAZR MAXX for it. Just swap your SIM card into the new phone, and your all done.

Here is the quick run down. If you have unlimited data and upgrade after June 28th. You have to switch to tiered data pricing(2gb which is $30 or higher). If you have an upgrade now do it before June 28th! If you want to stick with unlimited and be grandfathered in the future. You have to either pay full retail price for the phone from verizon(which will have 1 year warranty) or buy phones from ebay, craigslist, swappa or other places which does not require any contract.
I am a Verizon employee. Ask me any question that you might have. I can clarify and help you guys as much as I can.

How will this work for family share plans?

[Q] Need help on adding a line and keep unlimited data

I am about to add another line on my "share everything" family plan. I am in need of Internet at my home, and would like to buy a 350$ line and do a assumption of liability account transfer. Problem is I am on a share everything and one line doesn't go out until 2015 (The line I'd like to put unlimited data on) So my question is. How would I go about adding another line and getting unlimited Internet on my s4? While only paying 2 lines.
Galaxy s4 - ends 2015
Galaxy S3 - contract ended can cancel anytime
New line unlimited data.
Any help would be nice, don't want to pay $400 for Internet setting a line up and Verizon find a way to rip it away of me. **I am trying not to let my s3 get the unlimited line** Could I also keep my same numbers? I am new about how all this works. And do you think it's a good investment? Or do you think verizon will rip the plan away from me in a few months either way for all grandfather users?

If you have an existing line with unlimited data, you'll want to go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2367734 - "How to upgrade without losing unlimited data".
If you don't, I don't think VZ is selling unlimited data plans any longer.
I am buying the unlimited line off ebay. Which would mean I wouldn't need a line and would get rid of my on where contracts up. How would I go about setting these 2 lines up where
1 has unlimited
No more share everything family plan
Keep numbers
And s4 Getz the unlimited plan (which its current one will not go out until 2015) example could I switch my s4 and s3 lines so my s4 is off contract and switch it with the newly unlimited plan putting my s3 on contract again till 2015? Get numbers changed back and somehow get off share everything and keep unlimited data line I purchased for my s4?

I suggest you read the thread that I pointed you to. It tells you how people have kept their existing unlimited service and transferred it to a new S4. I've not done this, so can't give you the real-world experience that you'll get from that thread. (And buying an unlimited line on eBay? I don't think so - if you buy a phone off of eBay that has unlimited service currently, you'll need to re-apply for service and won't get unlimited AFAIK.)

It is assumption of liability where I take access over another customers plan who originally had unlimited data. I'll read through the thread again see if I can find anything useful, seems like I'm going to have to go up to verizon to make sure they don't mess anything up and I won't waste $400 :/ Basically I need home internet and I'd rather pay 30 for Verizon each month since I get little over 45 mbp/s in my location.
If I am understanding correctly your wanting to merge the unlimited plan/line your getting on eBay with your share everything plan you currently have right?
I don't you can do that, you ate going to need to leave them separate.

Not 100% correct I want a nationwide plan and off share everything then accept the new link to avoid losing unlimited data. Just don't know the steps I'll go about doing it to get everything set up where my s4 which contracts not ended somehow get on the unlimited line and my s3 take over my s4 contract (if it's even possible) I'll probably end up paying contract early termination fee then getting the lines switched how I want them
I would double check.. I could be wrong I believe Amazon makes you keep it on line for 181 days.. Maybe I'm mistaken with another one.. I'm on the go now so further research is needed for sure..
is this true? If I upgrade my dumb line to the note 3 and then activate it, then after activation switch the note 3 to my unlimited line and dump the data plan on the dumb line, will amazon make me pay or no?

Not all in-store Verizon folks are idiots, and why an Edge plan saves money

Yes some are bone heads but some aren't. Here's my recent experience.
I have 4 phones on my account with a 10 gig shared data plan. My daughter wanted to move from Sprint to Verizon so my wife and I went to a Verizon store to help her through the transaction. One of the first things I do when I talk to one of the CS reps is state my position and what I want from this conversation with him/her. I like to see what they know or don't know. My rep, John, saw that I wasn't an average clueless customer and he immediately shifted into a smarter mode. Kudos for that.
So, my daughter decides on a Moto X. He runs the numbers and quickly figures out that it's much cheaper for her to join our family plan. No problem, we'll do that. She now pays us monthly for 1/5 of the total bill.
Then he pulls this one: "I'd like for you to look at the Edge plan for that Moto X." Ok, I'm not dumb, I've read all about the Edge plan. Yes it's no contract and yes you can switch to a new phone after a year but you pay for the phone as you go. I've looked at the numbers and it never makes sense to get Edge unless you just can't wait to upgrade phones. But boy do you pay for it.
Right now my opinion of John is changing. He's trying to pull a fast one. So I object saying, "I'm not interested in Edge." He comes back with, "What if I can prove it saves you money?" "OK, wise guy," I'm thinking, "do you take me for an idiot? Show me how smart you are, bonehead." Instead, I say, "Really? How?"
And he shows me. The way the Edge program works is that the monthly cost of the phone on an Edge plan is retail cost divided into 20 months. In the case of the Moto X it's $400 retail or $20 per month. Turns out if you have a 10 gig, or higher, data plan they discount the Edge program by $25 for EACH phone on the Edge plan. So, in her case the $20 plan minus the $25 discount reduced the plan by $5 compared to a 2 year subsidized contract. "So," I thought, "this guy really knew what he was doing."
Other advantages to Edge: The phone can be upgraded after 60% of the retail price is paid off. That's 12 months. If you want to trade it in sooner than 12 months then pay the difference to get up to 60%. This is a trade-in, you don't keep the phone. However, if you do keep the phone for 20 months it's yours to keep, no trade in necessary.
The break even point is phone that retails for $500. At that point the monthly payment is $25 and the discount is $25.
An HTC One and LG G2 are break even on Edge. A Note 3, S5 and LG G3 are only $5 more on Edge. All in all, it turns out, Edge is a pretty good deal if you have the 10 Gig plan.
In the end, my daughter was happy, I'm happy and it was a great experience. So, not all CS reps are idiots.

Yeah. Because of how much data I use, they told me they would give me all the deals of a more everything plan plus 20% off my whole bill. Then I said I already have 20% off through a worker who worked there years ago. They said it would add on top of that. So 40% off plus what ever more eveything. But given how much data I use, wouldn't do anything for me.
You lost me at "some aren't"
Nice experience. Not sure why you keep calling him a bone head in your mind. If you knew about the edge and the savings you get (-$25 for 10gb), then the sale would be as easy as in and out. But then again looks like you didn't know of that last part about the savings. Anyways congrats on your new phone purchase.

First of all, if you read your contract you'll see that they have the right to change the contract at any time. In essence, legally, they can boot you off of unlimited data anytime they want. There's nothing you can do about it, you signed the contract. Right now they won't do that because there are too many unlimited plan customers, including my phone, that it would get bad press.
Another loophole changes in August were people would have someone on their family plan buy a new phone and they switched the SIM card to be able to upgrade their phone without paying full price. That goes away on August 24th.
Right now the only way left to keep unlimited data is to buy a full phone at full price, not a discounted price. However, I expect to see that change in the future. I believe that within the next 12 months Verizon will change their policy with regard to unlimited. They won't kill it but you will lose it if your phone's MEID changes. In effect, the only way to keep unlimited data is to never change to a different phone. Lose your phone, break your phone, or upgrade to a new phone and your unlimited data plan will go away. Verizon has stated LOUD AND CLEAR that they don't like unlimited data plans and that they will eventually end.

As. Long as wee keep our current unlimited plans and buy our devices outright then I do not see how they can legally boot us off of unlimited.

This forum has a link about the future of unlimited data. Basically Verizon will begin throttling people who use more data than they deem profitable.

If you aren't under contract then they can do anything. They could end your unlimited data tomorrow and you'd have absolutely no recourse.
Edit: You are always under contract, the one you signed when you first joined Verizon. The phone may be paid off but the contact always exists as long as you use their network. You are just under the month-to-month portion of the contract.

No you are not under a contract when month to month. There are no binding terms keeping me locked to any set rules or conditions. However, there is the TOS I agreed to back when I first joined. Aside from that I have been a VZW customer for 15yrs and they have never ended or terminated any service I have had with them. They may discontinue a older plan, but they have never forced me off of any plan I was on. I have no reason to believe they would start doing such things. Just because they did away with the loop hole(add a line/transfer device/put dumb phone on added line) to keep unlimited does not mean they are going to start forcing people off thier unlimited plans. Even if they did, I would simply jump on a shared plan...it is what it is.
Boy did I luck out. Just read this about august 24th. I got a note 3 yesterday! Still unlimited.... and my upgrade I'd in November, seems like people better get their phones now! So what if you buy a used phone and swap sims?? Post Aug 24th...

That's not true, the only loop hole they are closing is that if you add a new line to get a smartphone you have to keep the data plan on that phone. You can still use an upgrade on another smartphone line then transfer the SIM, or if you have an upgrade on your unlimited, transfer it to another smartphone do the upgrade then swap the SIM cards(this is what I just did a couple of months ago). So basically I have an unlimited line and my wife has a tiered plan, we both get to use our upgrades, we just have to do the transfer gimmick.

I worked for Verizon, and have recently left to pursue other opportunities. I posed this very same thought to my account manager. She said that the most likely scenario is that there will be a point when they will absolutely remove unlimited data. They can say we are sorry but that phone cannot be put on a line with unlimited data. You have to also scour the terms and conditions. The company does reserve the right to terminate any plans and change existing plans. This is whether or not you are in contract. I am pretty sure they have a legal team that has already discussed this. I always see threats by people saying they will leave and go to this company or that company; but let's face it, choices for phone companies are very limited. You go to T-Mobile and you have limited areas, same with Sprint. The two companies that are in control are Verizon and AT&T. They have effectively formed a duopoly. It is not by accident that they have nearly the same exact plans. All I am saying is enjoy the data while you have it.

the problem with putting any stock in what your account manager says is the simple fact that one could speak to 10 different account managers and get 10 different answers.
Amen to that, verizon employees must not have group trainings as they All seem to have a different answer for you.

Most people do not realize the 25 dollar credit per edge line per month on the bill.
