I am trying to solve the low storage problem.
I have try G music on my GS3, its way too slow to transition from 1 song to another.
It also uses way too much data, i would hit 5gb before the week end. sadly i dont have unlimited data.
Any other cloud storage that is fast(like stock player) and uses less data at 320kbps?
Or i should just get the note 2? I love everything about the note 2 better then Droid dna
But i like the Droid dna build quality.
I think Subsonic does something like you're asking for... it's streaming media like GMusic but it lets you configure the stream a lot more. I think this'll be what I use once my DNA arrives.
To quote their site: "If you have constrained bandwidth, you may set an upper limit for the bitrate of the music streams. Subsonic will then automatically resample the music to a suitable bitrate."

Just look at subsonic, I dont have a server at home or want to build one, also im not spending money just to get the app. I will give amazon cloud player a try.

so that i dont sound like a shill, since apparently a handful of the folks here think that just because we got the phone early thats what we are...
i would say go with what you like best. i love my dna and after getting my hands on a note 2 for a bit i would choose the dna easily. but if you love everything about the note 2 except the build quality it should come down to how much weight buld quality has against everything else.
huh. I have no gaps between song playback, and I never use more than a 2GB or so using Google Music all the time. You could always save a playlist or two to the phone for the day while on WiFi and keep rotating what's stored on the phone. Admittedly, not the best solution...

I don't think you need an actual dedicated server for Subsonic. Pretty sure it's just a program that runs on your desktop. I use a similar thing called Tversity, but for sharing movies around the house.
In another thread someone else had suggested a micro usb reader/adapter with a micro sd for when you wanted to play music.....

i thought droid dna doesnt support USB Host. I read it somewhere, correct me if im wrong
if you want to use less data than stream lower quality music, a 320kbps will use up a ton of data while streaming at 128kbps will use less than half as much. personally i got spotify premium free 2 day thing right before going on a long bus ride and i watched my data plan being used up at a rate of 100MB/hour of streaming at the highest quality they have (320kbps) quite entertaining considering my data plan atm is too large for me

I think Subsonic will be the perfect fir for you...
I realize this might not be helpful, but I've found Spotify to be absolutely perfect in this regard. You can choose playlists to store offline (and as songs are added, it downloads those songs via wi-fi, or wi-fi/mobile depending on settings you choose), and you can choose different quality for offline vs. streaming (so I have 'normal' quality for streaming, and 'extreme' quality, which is 320kbps afaik, for offline use). So I keep my starred/favorites playlist stored for offline use, everything else streaming. No lag, no trouble, works absolutely perfectly on the DNA and doesn't require much space because I only store offline the songs I am currently listening to most. When I get sick of them, I unstar them and star others. So I rarely stream any music.
That is, if Spotify has the songs you like, and you are willing to pay the $9/month for it.
I use cloud-based services (Google, Amazon, etc.) However, I absolutely love Audiogalaxy. It's free and available on the Market. Once installed, you tell it what folders to point to, and voila, you have a music streaming service from your home.

Since Samsung is only releasing a 16GB version of the tablet here in Canada, there's no option for 32gb unless ordering from the US. After base o/s install, there is roughly 12GB free. Has anyone bought the 16GB and found it to too limiting? 12GB is probably plenty of room for quite a few app installs, but adding videos would kill it real quick. The omission of an sd card slot is really disappointing, but it is what it is. Buying an android tablet unfortunately seems to be more about making compromise than anything.

So far 16GB's seems to be more than enough for me. It really depends on how you set your self up. Here's a couple of things I've done to help give me a bit more usable room on my Tab.
1. Use online storage like Dropbox and Box.net and their android apps. With Dropbox you can get 2GB's free and if you get other people to sign up from a link you email them you can get more free storage. I got most of my family and a few friends to sign up this way, I'm up to 5GB's of free online storage with Dropbox alone. Box.net you can get another 5GB's of free online storage for free just for signing up. I use both of these to store all of my wallpapers, icons pictures and such. Saves a ton of room and makes everything available to me no matter where I am. You can use these sites from your Tab or your phone by using their apps or any laptop or desktop by going to their sites.
2. If you plan on using your Tab for work things like word docks, spreadsheets and PDF's... Use Google Docs, I've been using Google Docs for the last few years now and haven't even come close to using up the space they give you for free. I'm a chef and use it to keep all of my recipes, cost control documents... Again for the same reasons I stated above. I've also started using EverNote over the last year and now that I have my Tab I find myself using it even more. Being a chef I'm very much into keeping a running record of the food and dishes I make. With EverNote I can snap a picture with my eVo of a special or new dish and make a few key quick notes, then on the train ride home at the end of the day I can edit that note on my Tab to make it more detailed.
3. For your music you can use any number of online music storage sites. I use Googles Music Beta, again for the reasons i've stated before. I can get to everything in my collection from anywhere, on my phone, my Tab and any computer anywhere.
Those 3 things alone save a ton of space on my Tab as well as my eVo and make it very easy for me to access all of my stuff from anywhere.
It should leave you with more than enough space on your Tab for any number of apps. As for movies, just make sure that they are formated right. And how many times can you watch the same movie over again, once you've watched vid or movie just either delete it or one it to your computer.
I have over 50 apps installed on my Tab, all of the StarWars movies, and I mean all of them 1 through 6 and some other movie with Mat Damon in it. And I still have over 7GB's free memory.
Live in the cloud brother... Make thing a bit easier.

16GBs isn't enough for me. Typically most one hour 720P HD video clips will take up anywhere from 1.5 to 1.9GBs and that leaves me little room for music. Despite using spotify, dropbox, pandora, and netflix i still can't keep enough media to last me for a trip longer than 5 hours
A quick question to you guys: are the 32/64 bit versions not available anywhere in Europe? For me 16GB is definitely not enough. I am struggling with 32GB on my current Galaxy Tab 7"....

um ok. I guess you've never been on a long road trip or train ride. There is only so many times you can watch the same movie/video over again.
16GB is definitely enough for what most people use tablet for. But it's true that there are times where i do store HD movies in the tab and i wish i could store more HOWEVER it's definitely not enough to justify getting 32gb for $100 more

For me it's more than enough. With all the cloud space everywhere I don't need more. I have with me the stuff I really need/want and everything else is available only via an internet connection.
That might not be an option for someone else. That person needs to wait for/get a 32/64 GB model. I'm perfectly happy with the 16 GB.

That's what the USB adapter and two USB thumb drives are for.
64GB extra instead of 16GB extra for $100 extra.
with apps like google music and netflix i have yet to run out of space on my 16gb.
I bought the 16GB version today. I almost mail ordered a 32gb from the US, but then I thought if I have hardware issues I might be out of luck. I plan to get the USB adapter which I can only find on ebay right now.

what's it like when you stick one of those cards in your Android full of music? I have an iPod Classic 160GB and now I'd like a bigger screen and touch for easier use. But I've heard terrible things about these SD cards in Android phones. I don't care about screenshots with big numbers,
-what is it like in practical use?
-Does music transfer quickly?
-When you de-tach your phone does it freeze while the SD loads? (some crappy mp3 players do).
-What happens when you load your music player, does it freeze, does it freeze the first time after music transfer or ever time, how long does it freeze?
-Do you have to format your SD card because of normal phone use? How often?
-How do you find out how fast your phone can read the SD?

I personally have Live with Walkman, which about half year ago, was the same price as iPod Touch 4g 8GB.
Practical use...I am not sure what you mean about it. Android phones are regular smartphones: music player, internet, apps, calling, SMS etc.
Music transfer speed has never been problem for someone. If your computer has USB 2.0(quite likely), then it is the best you can.
On some phones, rechecking the music folders might take a bit of time to make sure player has all the music there is. Usually doesn't take more than 1-2 minutes, mostly less than that.
Freezing? Depends on phone, but Android phones are nowadays quite fast already, there is no freezing at all.
Seriously, who gives a **** about 1-1,5 sec freezing in the menu? Music doesn't stop anyway.
I have never formatted my SDcard and will never do it. It is not needed, the regular format(which should be FAT32, Android doesn't support others) works just great, you don't need anything else.
SD card speed depends on SD card, Class 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10. Class 10 have highest speed, Class 2 slowest.
I have Class 4 SanDisk 16GB, works like a charm, higher speed is only needed if you move large files on your SDcard often. I have never experienced problems with SDcard speed.
By practical use, I mean good daily and constant use of a decent audio player. I have the feeling that many Android phones aim to play music and almost nothing else. I don't use spotify or google music or any of that. I use podcasts big time, I have over 10GB of podcasts alone. I see Sony's version of iTunes, Media Go is actually quite decent now. But practical as a full replacement for an iPod.
Music transfer...my Xperia Mini is OK, but have you seen an iPod? It's 2 songs per second...I've 25GB of music, it has to be fast. Also, I did try other brands of audio players and some of them spend 5 minutes (no joke) loading after music transfer, it was horrible. I actually smashed on it made me so angry, and I NEVER do that. I danced on the screen when I got another iPod. It did it every time even if I moved just 1 song.
By freezing, I mean when you enter the music menu. I just don't want my phone freezing every time it loads 25GB of music and 10GB of podcasts.
I've done a fair bit of research on the class type, XDA has some good threads also. I'm still unconvinced though. People keep posting crap about fast read/write speeds. Who cares, I'm interested in actualy use nothing else.
I highly recommend formatting your SD. Copy all the contents to a folder on your laptop/pc, format then copy back. I'm not joking, if you use different roms you will be SHOCKED at the improvement it makes. I don't mean a tiny improvment, I mean major. Your SD moves much faster, loading pics in your phone becomes instant again.
Your 16GB card works ok? Is that your full music collection?

I have been using stock music player all the time(Walkman on stock ROM, stock player on current, MIUI, ROM). Android phones do have music feature, even though most manufacturers are trying to improve other sides.
Live with Walkman is built for music lovers, with its dual speakers(bass is low, but for regular listening is quality fine), special Walkman(which actually misses own equalizer, but can be downloaded from Market).

iPod's and other Apple products use own cabling system, which probably allows high speed transfer. Androids have microUSB port, which might limit it.
USB 2.0 supports maximal of 60 MB/s, Apple probably takes so much possible from it, as one their port is for everything.

For 35GB of music material, it might take some time first to check all the folders for music files and load metadata to the player and create cache(that is done only after every music collection change).
If music folders are the same, same cache is used and loading player will be fast.
2011 Xperia's have 1 GHz processor, shouldn't take long time for loading anyway.

First time, placing all your music there might take a while, but later on, you don't add 10GB of stuff to SDcard at once, so that high speed might not be needed.

I might give it a try, when I have time, even though I have no problems with speed at the moment.
Besides, what would formatting give me? The file system has to stay FAT32 anyway, because Android doesn't support another ones.

Yes, 16GB works fine(14,8GB available due to difference in manufacturing and file systems, 1000-1024 difference). And no, music is about 2-3 GB from it, I don't keep all the music on my phone, only the music I like at some point, old songs are deleted.
I also got few videos/films(Family Guy ) to look, when I am bored sometimes or can't sleep in evening. Screen is small, but it isn't that bad for films.

It works fine, no freezes at all. The only problem is the sound of it is not THAT good, i have never listened to an Ipod, but my phone cant handle much bass without distortion. I'm currently using PowerAMP player, its fantastic and you can configure it to make your music far better than the stock player and the "limiter" option fix the distortion problem.
I think its a good idea to use an external DAC (Fiio E17 example) if you like to listen to a perfect music with your perfect headphone.
EDIT: I have currently 8GB of music on my SD and PowerAMP loads it very fast.

I've ordered a 32GB on ebay (half the price of in the shops and unused, good seller) and am waiting for it to arrive in the next few days. I've practiced sending about 20 favourite songs to my 2GB card using Media Go. The transfer is way slower than iTunes, but like the guy at the top ^^ said, perhaps after the cache is created on the phone it will all move faster...the load time after that was about 15 seconds...not bad at all. My iPod classic takes about 10 seconds but I'm happy so far.
I can't wait to test the new SD. I'll report back on how it goes. Media Go has finally come of age I think, it's very capable now. I'm testing different music apps on my phone and so far I like DoubleTwist the most - for easy of use though Poweramp has probably the best audio I've heard. I also recommend trying the megabass.zip that's available on here.

After extensive effort, don't bother trying to replace an iPod with an Android anything yet! What a joke. If you like iPods keep them...I've tried so many devices over the last 6 years and really they (for me) still got nothing on iPods...

I use my XM only for listening to music or texting...so all the roms i tried either are for performance or some particular use....

I've got a mini pro with a 64gb sdxc card, poweramp as music player. Most points have been addressed before.
However you have to keep one point in mind. The phone plays decent enough audio on the go, with background noise and all other factors that come into play. Yet the ipod still has much better audio quality (use it with proper headphones and enough impedance and the difference is quite obvious) and I fear that's hardware related, no decent audio hardware in the phone. I have an external dac, but let's be honest why would i carry that around, it's as big/inconvenient as carrying an extra ipod around, given the choice I'll take my ipod with me.
For the price the phone has cost me, I'm pleased with it, small enough so don't have to carry an ipod around if I don't want to. The audio quality could however be better, and there's imho no software solution possible.
By the way; file transfer speed might be annoying, but how often are you going to be transferring several gigs of music? You put most of your collection on there once, or might change a few times. No point transferring flac or anything around that size to the phone.
Kinda off topic, but what sort of performance are you getting with the 64GB card? Are there any problems with compatibility? Would you mind running some speed tests on the card and posting the results?

Sorry for the late reply, didn't really see the first question and haven't had much time lately. I've got a Sandisk card of amazon.de. I'm not allowed to post links unfortunately. Anyway back when I bought it, it had a lot more good reviews. It's been replaced by another product in the mean time.
Does it still work yes, without fault almost. The only downside is that every time I add files via USB (pc), it causes a reboot verifying card integrity (only one reboot, so that's something I can live with). That might be because of the way the card is formatted, operating system I've used, still need to check into that.
I'm currently running a test for the read/write speeds, will post that later on.

Ok so I've got some test results. Didn't test the entire card, just let the tests run for 10 minutes.
Read average 12.7 MegaBytes/S
Write average 8.6 MegaBytes/S
So not quite the class 10 it's labelled to be, pretty much knew that it was just a bit too slow. Did record video on it though without any hiccups.
I have a mini pro, paired with a 16gb kingston class 4 sd card and a Brainwavz M1 headphones, with this mix y just ditched my ipod touch of 16gb.
It's not my entire library but it's enough for my needs, I strongly recommend to buy the Poweramp music play app, it's a heavy improvement from stock music players. BTW this phones have fm radio a impossible feature in any apple device.
I would recommend the change, but it's up to you, if you want to move large data files or a large amount of data I strongly recommend to buy a micro sd to standard sd adapter and a class 10 card.

The design of this thing is awesome. Pair it with those monster 14 pound EACH speakers and man, that's drool worthy.
However, this device is kinda confusing to me. Is it a dumbed down receiver? Is it a dumbed down Google TV device? I can play vids from YouTube and and Google Play and music and that's it?
Where are the shots of what ever interface this will have? Where is Netflix? Huluu Plus? Amazon Prime? This seems to be the most limited - as far as what can be done with it from the get-go - device I have seen El Goog push out in a long while. Sad.
As good as it looks, it seems rushed to me. Why pay $299 for something that is simply novelty and available in many different flavors already?
Till they add a bit to it, or someone hacks it and makes it much better. Sorry Goog, I pass.
While they were doing the presentation, I understood it as it was just a receiver that connects to some speakers or a tv, so once you connect to it (I forget if it was WIFI or NFC) you can just play music or videos on the speakers or tv; and anybody that connects to it is able to play what they want on it.
It looks great and all but for $300 its definitely not worth the price tag.
This is on the network so I hope that it has easy access to Windows shares and that it will be able to play 1080p MKVs with lossless audio.
I haven't played around with playback on devices.
Even though it is pricey if it has this full feature set then I may pick this up. Would be a nice improvement over plugging in a laptop to the TV.

From what I was told yesterday, it won't. The guys here at IO said it would only stream from them (movies and music stored in their cloud or Play Store).

It's $300 because it's supposedly actually manufactured in America... so do with that what you will

The engadget preview says much of the price is because of the built in amp, which, IMHO is totally unnecessary. I have a surround sound system.. why would I want stereo sound from that puny little thing?
Drop the amp and $100 off the pricetag and this thing will sell itself. Oh, and unlock the damn thing. Only plays stuff from the play store? Google is starting to sound like apple...

Really? It has a USB port explicitly for the purpose of hacking it. I have no doubt the Nexus Q will be a cool device to own once there's enough dev support for it.
It seems like Google released the Nexus Q with the idea that the android community would figure out what to do with it.
Nexus q + dev support = sold. However I will wait for the support first instead of buying and hoping....
Its an interesting device, but I'm disappointed that they at least didn't add an "airplay" style connection for displaying your phone or tablet screen on the tv via wifi. That would at least make it more appealing for the price
I sat there during the keynote thinking what a killer feature this would have been for a google tv. Instead it's a more expensive and more limited device.
I came away from i/o feeling like the google tv is being de-prioritized and they want to push this device instead because it's locked down to google play content. There were zero mentions of google tv during either of the keynotes. There were sessions but after sitting through a few it seemed as if all the new and exciting things were happening in other product lines. I don't mean this as a dig at the google tv devs. I just think the company has made a cooporate decision to lock this down.
Maybe I'll feel a little different after unboxing it tonight and playing with it some but I just can't see myself getting on board this product line and I'm a google fanboy. It just feels like a limitations by design concept.

That's cool. But inconsistent. Not everyone is tech savvy enough to even flash anything and I would be more apt to group those individuals with ones who would use the banana plugs on the back. It doesn't take an audiophile to desire more than 2 channels of sound.
I think its a brilliant device and ill probably get one once the price goes down. I just think it may increase sales to offer one without the amp - is it really that big of a selling point?

Agreed. This isn't like our Android phones running custom ROMs. You buy an Android phone, ANY Android phone, and you can:
1. Make phone calls
2. Send text messages
3. Use email
4. Browse the web
5. Download, install, and use the full Play Store catalog of apps
All without any hacking at all. When you install a custom rom, you're basically getting a few added features, customization, optimization, maybe the ability to overclock or run a select few apps that need root. You know, little things that aren't necessary but are nice to have.
The Nexus Q is different because it's gimped right out of the box. You basically can't do anything with it, other than play music and videos from the Play Store only (and who even has a huge collection of that stuff?). Even the very first Apple TV was capable of streaming content through a local network, even if it was limited to stuff you added to your iTunes library.
I appreciate Google reaching out to the dev community, but they can't rely on them to do all their work for them. What the Nexus Q should have been was a tiny Android desktop computer, controllable directly with an Android phone using a specific app (something like Gmote) and able to run any and all Android apps. I'm excited when I see thumb-sized Android computers available for under $100. The NQ could have been a cooler, more premium version of that, but as it is, it's both overpriced AND has no features.
YouTube app
So not living in US forces me to use Music and the YouTube app. Now it's time to do some raging.
Playing youtube vids on my tv is awesome through the app and all that. But I want to be able to play several videos. I have several playlists but the only option on a playlist in the youtube app is to delete it. Opening the playlists gives you the possibility to play one (and only one) video in a row. It really sucks. I don't want to open the app every time a video has ended :/
Guys what are you complaining about? Your where given cool toy for free because you are developers. You are suppose to find better applications for it . Just do it. Few years ago you had T-Mobile android phone without anything useful on it , nobody completed

All you guys in here complaining are just not dev or inspiring to be one cause from what I seen you're able to load a launcher to it from adb and stream netflix in 1080 so you guys dont really understand android or google yet but you will.

I want to upload all my music on to the cloud, If i stream from one of the cloud services(google music),1. does it stream at FLAC quality? 2. say 25mb per song, does it use up to 25mb of data?
Same applies to photo and videos?
having 16gb with no sd card sucks really bad.
I listen to my music at work, If i use the cloud services, i have to eat up my data.
If i want to show a friend a photo, would i have to DL a photo from cloud(10mb) then MMS.
I hope it doesnt work that way, takes too much data and time.

if i remember correctly, and someone can correct me if i am wrong, google music converts flac into mp3 for streaming. i know on the app there is a setting to turn off high quality streaming so that will also probably reduce the size of the data needed.
Wait for the international ver of htc droid dna, it has a high chance to support microsd. According to china sites, the china ver looks like has the microsd supported as well as the japan ver(J butterfly).

Will it work on Verizon's LTE network? If not then it's not a good trade-off IMO.
It converts your FLAC into 320kbps mp3s. as for the file size, I'm not really sure. I know it converts into 320 because i've uploaded most of my flac and redownloaded them. they are 320 mp3s now.
Do you really have headphones that you carry around where FLAC makes a difference? It would take a very expensive pair for that...

streaming music in your car you would notice the difference if you have a high quality set up (anything better than stock really)

Watch video podcasts on YouTube and listen to music. The two things it was designed for

Not great on quality, but you can certainly stream from the Nexus Q to a bluetooth receiver and into an AUX port on your stereo system. Otherwise going via HDMI into a receiver allows you to get the full surround effect.
I've collected a few Q's and I'm trying to find ways to still use the stock amp via a bluetooth stream TO the Nexus Q (CM9 Nexus Quantum Singularity?) or disabling the Nexus Q app forced NFC push and enabling stock Android Beam to push songs to the Q. This works great on CM10.1 RC5 for Youtube.

They were never on sale here in the UK and I really want one for a project and for generally geeking around but have yet to be able to get hold of one for a half reasonable price.

I really love my Q Ball and have only took it out the box once or twice never seen a single movie on it yet the light show it produces really looks awesome. I would be willing to let it go for a good trade. Pm me if you ever read this and still are looking for one.
I bet that could happen to me aswell, but prolly not if i had a nexusQ.
Running raspbmc on a raspberry, witch is frequently used, as my media hub..
Would like to see more integration to android devices though.
