micros SD card - HTC Droid DNA

Since the J Butterfly has a micro SD slot, I'm guessing the DNA has the internal connections for a slot. Can anyone verify this? Might someone be able to develop a hardware hack to add in an internal micro SD card?

I'm anxiously waiting for the tear-down of this phone

No the internals are different that's why the DNA isn't waterproof and it hasn't got a sd card slot it also supports wireless charging which I don't think the j butterfly has.

According to the Enganet review it is:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/16/htc-droid-dna-review/
"We noticed another small quirk soon after unboxing the phone: the micro-USB / MHL port on the bottom is covered by a plastic flap that takes more effort to snap closed than it should. According to HTC, this was done to keep the phone splash-resistant, in exactly the same manner as the J Butterfly. As we've seen on the majority of Japanese phones in the past, carriers in that country have particularly high standards when it comes to protecting devices from water, so HTC and Verizon chose to adopt those standards for the DNA."
According to this the DNA is no less "waterproof" than the J Butterfly is.
How similar the internals are is anyon'e guess until the device is torn down.

the j butterfly has IPX5 rating for waterproofness, which the dna does not, or at least hasn't been listed/officially mentioned

It's likely the same board as the butterfly - meaning if the slot isn't there, the pins for it will be and it could be possible to solder one in. Not sure if the driver would be there etc but since the phone is already rooted, I wouldn't be surprised if people found a way to do this.
That said, I wouldn't buy the phone assuming this is true. And soldering on something like this isn't for everyone, and everything might be so compact there's no way you could do it by hand.

Lots of sites claiming it does... however not sure what they are using for source/reference materials. It would make sense that it does... but I guess we will know for sure soon enough.

well considering neither htc's site or verizons says anything about it I'm gonna go with the fact that it doesnt have since being waterproof/resistant should be a pretty big feature, not something they dont mention
Most of the places that say it has ipx5 are basing it off the butterfly and assuming the phones are the exact same.

right
Exactly !
But the waterproof come from case not from PCB and for sure that there in is an hided micro sd slot, i can bet for that.

still waiting....
I still waiting for teardown of this phone here:
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/

Can anyone please test if the device can read from an all-in-one memory card reader over a micro usb OTG adapter?
I'm waiting for my phone to get here, trying to see if I can hook it up and see how it handles multiple devices when I get it.

I can confirm that it will accept card readers. I was able to plug in an eye-fi SD card reader and have it mount the card. However, it required power from an external source via a USB hub and Y-cable.

Has anyone hacked an otg cable for their dna to provide power to the dna while still working as otg?

Guys. the phones are nearly the same.
both phones are "waterproof" because they use the same source parts. the waterrproof factor comes from the case seal.
it is a silcone/rubber seal.
the parts difference is the simboard, which on the non-microSD we use MIcro-Sims,
and the other phones use Nano-sims, to fit the simcard AND mico SD in the same areas.
the SD slot on our phones CAN be used if you can do micro SMC soldering (think BGA)
but you will not be able to put the back on.
in case someone calls BS on me, I have this phone apart daily.
I used to do tear-downs phone soldering for a hobby, now i fix bricks.

Are we SURE there is no micro SD card slot???

Are we sure there is no micro SD card slot on the tab 10? Has anyone taken apart the unit? There is a micro SD slot on the 3G version, maybe samsung has left the actual slot on the system board but just covered up the opening on the plastic shell? This happens all the time in manufacturing devices, often Mfrs want to remove a feature and dont want to re-tool or reprogram a Mfr process so they do things like leaving the option in and just covering it up.....Ive seen this happen all the time.
The fact that the tab 10 was SUPPOSED to come with a micro SD card slot and at the last minute having it left out leads me to GREATLY believe that the actual slot is on the system board just covered up by the plastic shell.
The slot is supposed to be just to the right of the volume buttons.
I cant take my unit apart until I get the stupid 3-prong security bits to unscrew the screws near the usb connector.
Mh interesting, my rotary tool is ready

There's a greater chance of finding a tiny leprechaun who changes the orientation of the Tab when it turns, than of finding an documented secret SD slot.

You obviously have no idea that all samsung pre-production models of the tab 10 (im not talking about the 10v model) had a micro sd card slot. There are plenty of pictures online. The sd card slot is there. Or at least there will be traces on the board. IMO the actual slot is soldered on the board as it was last min choice to have the option removed.
It'd be interesting to know if there is one or not......
I haven't taken mine apart yet, and have no interest in doing it. Never the less, I would also be interested in knowing what we have going on back there. I searched for a teardown by iSuppli or similar, but did not find anything. Too bad.
I'm aware that some pre-production models had the hardware. You're making a giant leap to suggest that the hardware exists in production models when all evidence points to the contrary.
But by all means, feel free to prove me wrong. I anxiously await your pics.
It's more than possible. Look at WP7 phones.

What evidence points to the contrary??? Samsung officially will tell you there is no micro SD card slot but that does not count since its their default answer if it is or isnt inside. The fact that there is no actual cut out in the plastic shell also does not count as that is its default position regardless if the slot hardware is there or not.
Again where is this evidence to the contrary?

It seems just as likely, if not more, that the pre production unit had a slot in the case, but no functioning SD hardware behind it. Even if the hardware is there, getting it to work w/o Samsung's support could be difficult. Look how hard it's been for the zoom, while Motorola intended for it to work

I'll have it xrayed on monday. I'll give you the pictures so you can analyze them.

maybe I'm missing something here, but what is the advantage to samsung when they actually have a microSD slot onboard 10.1 after the redesign and not to use it? I find their story believable that they had to cut it out due to size(thickness) issues. If they could squeeze in the micro SD they would not hesitate to advertise it as another advantage over the ipad2.

Advantage would be the ability to market the next product as "New and improved with expandable memory."
My professional opinion in concern to prototyping and designing, its much easier to modify and replace a plastic/aluminum enclosure than modifying a stockpile of motherboards

I have taken the liberty of messaging the user for his input on this threads subject and have requested he shed some light on this mind boggling question
I think this line right here is what's confusing people.
"micro-SD card slot for up to 32GB memory through a USB adapter (have to buy separately)"
It's possible to extend it through the USB adapter, but IMO it's much easier to use a service like dropbox or sugarsync. Save a few playlists locally with iSyncr then have the rest of your library on google music. I use sugarsync. I use it all the time. It's a great way to get files onto your device, wireless.
Where's the pictures of the pre production tab having the SD slot? And BTW it's up to the person making a claim against the norm to prove it... not the other way around, that's ridiculous.

Nothing has been confirmed that we will get USB Host support after ICS. But that would be the adapter that would do if it is going to work. However, I would highly recommend getting an adapter cable, and not just an adapter. That adapter will put a LOT of stress of your usb port and will end up breaking it sooner or later. Get a cable ( say 6 inches or 1 foot) with the same ends, it keeps the stress off the port.
Thanks for the reply..... Monoprice is not available in india , so ordering from them will end up paying taxes...

Dual Micro SD cards with Android?

I am curios to know if the Android OS is capable of seeing dual micro SD cards in our devices? Because if it can. I am going to make a cable that offers the ability to split the one in the device into two? Obviously kernels and or software will have to be written or re written to see it in a RAID like configuration. Though I am going to assume that it won't be able to see it in a RAID 0 configuration. But only a 1 configuration. Nor would there be a heavy need for a 0 configuration. Though I bet some could find a need for it. Any way, I thought I would through that question out there to any devs. If it is something that could be done. I have a Xoom 4G and would be willing to test out kernels and software if any reputable Dev is willing to give it a shot.

It should work, just make sure that the 2nd SD card is mounted somewhere different from the 1st one
It may also require different drivers/software mod but I'm not sure on this
I know it can be done as my dads Chinese tablet has 2 micro SD card slots

Thank you. This could help my to make what I am looking for. I will just have to adapt it to the form of what I need or want. Could very well prove useful to those of us that require more storage space that refuse to put their info out on the cloud. Thank you.

Extra Storage??

I'm seriously thinking about getting DNA on Wednesday and giving my S3 to my Spouse, who's still rocking the Thunderbolt. At first I was a bit dismayed by the 16GB storage option, but I looked at my 16GB S3 and realized that I never used more than 4 GB for Pics and Video, since everything is uploaded to my G+ account anyhow, and my 32GB SD Card is sitting idle. Here's something interesting.....this is available for the S3 and the iPhone....maybe they'll make it for the DNA? http://egoncompany.com/collections/hybrid-series-galaxy-s3
dude this is sick! i hope they do i will buy one asap!!
That is awesome!!!
I have to add....I don't play any games on my phone. I strictly use my phone for checking e-mails, surfing, FB, Google+, Twitter, and Pictures (I don't think I've unpacked my D-SLR at all since I've gotten the S3...it's a capable Point&Shoot), so even 16GB would be enough for me, but it's nice to know that there's possibly an option out there. Even if it isn't....I have a 3rd, 4th, and 5th line all coming up for renewal in March, so if I'm not happy, I'll just play the hand-me-down game and give the DNA to my mom, and get myself whatever the flavor of the day is at that point.
Okay, that is awesome. We need to bug the hell out of them and see what happens. I would certainly think they'd see the value in doing it, as the models the currently list offer higher memory configs out of the box.
Update: I sent them an email politely suggesting that we've got the perfect device for their business model. Lower memory than some and likely popular despite it's configuration.
This is great. I'll definitely pick one up if they make them for the DNA.
guys i dont get why you are all so excited... this is just a case with a sub holder - the memory on the usb itself does not integrate with the phone lol

Just a small USB drive.
I am crying over here, LOL...
As soon as I went on to the EGO Online Shop and saw the case, I knew immediately that it was nothing more than a case, storing a Micro USB Thumb Drive.
It does not mention anything about storing photos, music, apps, NOTHING on the Thumb Drive directly off of the phone.
It pretty much doesn't explain anything about what it does or it's use.
So, I can see where some people thought it would expand the on board memory of the DNA or iPhone or whatever phone they make a case for.
BUT, I did get a good kick out of some of the comments after people thought it would be a memory expansion for the phone.
ECO should be more specific and at least explain what the case and USB Drive is for.
On that note, if they were to make a case that would expand the on board memory or just so that we don't have to store all our pics/songs etc
on the phone and onto a USB Drive, that would be awesome.
Good luck to all with the DNA.
Nice phone, but I have had a ton of Androids (Most recently SGS3 from T-Mobile and Verizon), and this is just another one to add to my list. With the exception of the really nice 5" screen and
gorgeous display, it's just another Android Phone.

I use the same one to put the sim in my GNEX. It works just fine.
Excellent, thanks!
I finally got the SIM adapter suggested here but my SIM was a little too big for it. I used a fingernail trimmer and nail file to chip away at the SIM but I wound up making it a little too small for the One X+ SIM holder now so I need to use a little piece of scotch tape under it. A little cumbersome overall but it does work. Better than nothing and at $1.05 including shipping, I certainly can't complain.
I just made my own by taking an old sim card and cutting out the micro sim shape out of it. Then, rounding out as needed for the microsim to fit. Easy fix.
I had problems extracting the adapter from old telephones, sometimes it can get stuck!

just trace around the little sim on a bigger one/old ones and cut the space out with a box knife and put little one inside big one and sitck in phone works great i switch to my old inspire from my one x + all the time and it works great
just watch out for phones that dont have solid piece behind the sim tray ive heard of people losing their little sim inside there phone tot that you cant take it apart but some people are dumb just tape it to the big one if needed
Yup, the iCoolkit works great!
