I am one of the lucky ones who got their tablet from woot/amazon for $280.
I got it in yesterday and absolutely hated the Tap Tap interface.
Naturally, I wanted to install a new ROM. I could only get the TnT Lite to install, but still not what I wanted. I tried Vegan and G-Harmony and I got the dreaded 3 bird screen. I downloaded and successfully installed 3588 and rebooted it. I noticed the ClockworkMod is no longer on there, which is no problem.
I followed the directions to install Clockwork and ROMS from here:

I, for some reason, decided to install Vegan again w/o clockwork installed.
I mounted the internal memory card, copied he ROM over as update.zip with the Recovery folder and the command file set to install from SDCARD. A reboot later and now I am stuck at the 3 birds...
I was able to do the Power +Vol and get the "Recovery key detected" message and it seems to load something, hitting the home button gives me the verbose which indicated that it was trying to install something off SDCARD2.
I have tried 3588, clockworkmod and Vegan as update zip on the external SD card with the Recovery folder command file pointing to SDCARD2.
When booting into Recovery, the verbose says: "FORMATTING MISC... REBOOTING..." takes about 4 seconds to complete, reboots and back to the 3 birds screen.
So, how do I [email protected]#$ myself here?
UPDATE!
I got my tablet to boot into CWM!! I ended up putting the MicroSD version of CWM and held down the Power +Vol longer that normal, saw the Android text and it installed the update.zip.
I tried in vain to boot into CWM, but it would re-install the update.zip. *Head smack* took out the SD card and now it boots into CWM!
Now, to try to install a ROM w/o those damn 3 bird screen...
Bootlogo not part of a ROM
You can replace the birds logo, but it is not part of a ROM. Search for replace boot logo, but make sure you know the correct partition to push your custom logo too. Read the entire thread when you find it first. There are tools out there that will let you back up your partitions, I highly recommend doing that first. Search for backup bct and look for PooR's thread and tools.

The boot logo is not my issue, it's just that it does not go past it no matter what non-TnT ROM I try to install.
I just want to install anything other than the factory OS or a modified factory OS (no disrespect to the dev who made TnT Lite).

My friend (@ikingblack on XDA) has released 2 guides as of now, and unfortunately, his guides are a little misleading, and has you flashing packages left and right. Hopefully, this time I will try to get it right. I am not trying to be rude, just trying to point out that his guides are a little scant and incomplete. And please feel free to leave bad comments so I can improve it.
All right. Enough of that yucky stuff. Here's the Guide:
Requirements:
1. Rooted Nook Color with ClockworkMod Recovery (3.0.0.10 or later)
2. An SDCard that is bigger than 200 MB.
3. A Browser on the Nook that has the option of downloading to the SDCard.
4. Internet Access on the Nook is not required (NO).
5. A flashable ROM for the Nook on your SDCard
6. A ClockworkMod SDCard, which is optional but makes it easier (Especially Step 8). (search around the forums, will post link later) Please keep in mind that you have to take the SDCard out whenever you want to boot the Nook Software, and not ClockworkMod. Also, when I say boot into ClockworkMod in the guide, then you can just insert the SDCard and reboot.
Notice: Whenever I say download a certain file, it means download it to your SDCard. It does not matter how you do it, just get it on there. You can download it on your Nook, or download it on your computer and put it on the SDCard. It really doesn't matter.
Step 1.
Make sure you have a valid backup that is current. If not, make one, either through ROM Manager or ClockworkMod.
Step 2. First, download the preparation dual boot file. If you have dual booted before, and haven't removed it, then skip this download. Download Here.Then download the stock Nook ROM flashable zip, I recommend this one: Download. It is the latest version and keeps ClockworkMod. Keep in mind that the package has to keep ClockworkMod. Then download the root file if you want root: Download. Then the Second root file: Download. Finally, download the dual boot file: Download. Please remember the file names so you know what to flash. If you want, you can rename them.
Step 3. Boot into ClockworkMod, (If you have an SDCard with ClockworkMod on it, insert it and reboot.) and go into "Mounts and Storage" (Use the Volume Buttons to scroll and the n/home button to select). Then select Format /System, and select yes. Then format Data.
Step 4. Press the Power button to go back, and select "Install zip from SDCard". Then select the second option or something and browse for the first downloaded, or the preparation dual boot file, called prep-dualboot-0.1.zip, and select "Yes". After it is done, repeat Step 4 except with the second downloaded file, or the Stock Nook OS file, called update-nc-stock-1.2-keepcwm-signed.zip.
Step 5. If you have the ClockworkMod SDCard, take it out now. Then reboot the device by going back (can be achieved by pressing power) and selecting "Reboot Device Now.
Step 6. It should boot into the Stock Nook OS. Follow the setup procedure. Keep in mind that you need WiFi.
Step 7. If you want root, then reboot into ClockworkMod. If you can't, or don't know how, then use the 8 failed boots method. 8 failed boots means boot it up, and before it reaches the logo, (The pulsing B&N Nook Color) shut it off holding the power button. Even though this takes long, I don't know of anything else.
Step 7 for ClockworkMod SDCard users: Just insert your ClockworkMod SD, and reboot! Simple.
Step 8. Flash the second file, or the root file called ManualNooter-4-4-278.zip. Then Flash the second root file, called apk-enabler-1-1a-signed.zip. Then if there is anything else that you need to flash, then flash it. Please keep in mind that as of now Dalingrin's kernel should not work with it unless he releases an update. I haven't checked this, so please correct me if needed. After you are done, flash the last package, the dual booter, called eclair-dualbootv2.zip or something. Then reboot and hold the home button when it says multiuboot loading. It should load the nook os.
Step 9. Then download Rom Manager, from here: Download, and then install it. Flash ClockworkMod by tapping the first button, and selecting Nook Color (not Nook Color (old)). Then reboot into recovery.
Step 9 for ClockworkMod SDCard users: This time, you will have to flash ClockworkMod onto your device. Just follow normal Step 10.5 (Not for
ClockworkMod SDCard users).
Step 10. Reboot into ClockworkMod again, via Rom Manager. When it is in ClockworkMod, then insert the SDCard where you have the backup and the Custom ROM that you want to dual boot. Once you have inserted it, go into Mounts and Storage, and select Mount SDCard. If the option says unmount SDCard, then you are good to go. Then flash the ROM that you want dualbooting, and any other zip that you want on the non-stock or custom ROM. After you are done, then go back, and select backup and restore. Select Advanced Restore and select your latest backup. Then select restore data. Once it is done, then you can reboot and it should reboot into your custom ROM (if you didn't hold the home button on boot).
You are now done! When you want to boot into the Nook OS, hold the home button when you power on and the nook says multiuboot loading. If you want to boot up your custom ROM, than don't hold the home button. You can also now get into ClockworkMod by holding both volume buttons when it says multiuboot loading. Please do not hesitate to post with complaints, improvements or the like. Thanks! I want to improve this and my knowledge in every way I can.

The only issue was that after step 6 I could not get back into Clockwork and couldn't get the Rom manager apk to open.
I used a Clockwork bootable SD card with the 1.2 apk updated zip on it and that worked well for me.

No, I'm rooted. The issue was that I was unable to boot into clockwork after flashing the 1.2 zip that was supposed to keep clockwork intact. Since I hadn't flashed the root file yet I could install Rom Manager and flash Clockwork that way.
I just used a clockwork bootable microSD with the new Auto-nooter (and with the files from the OP on it) and flashed everything from there until I was rooted and could install ROM Manager. Worked fine and I'm dual booting Phiremod and rooted nook 1.2.

can't get phreakmod to boot, just loops
First off, thanks for the guide. It was a great help but I failed to make a backup of my rooted stock ROM and had to start all over again when I got to the end and had to restore the data only
Also I couldn't boot back into clockwork after loading 1.2. Even the 8 reboot method had no effect on my nook. I did some reading and came to the same conclusion as ad720 at about 1am last night and finally got it booting but couldn't get phreakmod version 6.1 to load. It just loops on the phreakmod boot screen. I was able to get the v4 of honeycomb and my stock rooted ROM to boot but no other ROMs seem to work.
I do have another question though. How do I know which ROM I am backing up with clockwork, or does it back up both ROMS as a dual boot backup?
Also, I want to keep my stock rooted nook for magazines and books but run phreakmod or maybe a newer ROM, do I have to go through the entire process again or can I just load a new ROM without screwing up my stock ROM?
Lastly, somehow mine ended up backwards, if I hold the "n" I get honeycomb, if I do nothing I get stock, which is fine at least it works, but I am not sure how it got reversed, I think I must have reversed a step when phreakmod wouldn't work and I had to redo it with honeycomb.
Normally I'd just keep messing with it until I got it figured out but I have already wasted well over 12hrs getting to this point so I have decided to breakdown and ask for assistance.
Any help or insight would be appreciated.

If you are fine with what you have, then you are ok. If you want to get CyanogenMod 7 or Phriemod with stock on a dual boot, then you will have to follow the guide again. I suggest you erase data, and system and then flash Phriemod. The backup problem is probably because you have an old version of Clockwork Mod Recovery, so try updating it via Rom Manager (Downloadable from the link in the op or from the Market). To update, just launch the app and click Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, then choose Nook Color, not Nook Color (old). Then, again from Rom Manager, tap "Reboot into Recovery" and then tap ok. After it reboots into ClockworkMod, then try your backup. Post if this works! If it does, I will put it in the op.
There are a lot of extra and unnecessary steps in this guide.
I did the entire process without having to reboot once last night, and didn't follow any posted guides except the original dual boot eclair guide.

I reinstalled phiremod and it still just looped. I downloaded ver. 6.0 and tried that and it still looped.
I then wiped and started again this time with phiremod first and I'm sitting here watching it loop. Strange.
I'll keep trying different things and hopefully with report back with what worked for me.

Recently decided to try and switch over to CM10, and have been having an issue with recovery. Both of the latest CWM and TWRP recoveries freeze for me after booting into them. The only recovery that works for me is the one that is flashed with the old app by Indirect but that flashes a really old CWM recovery. The recoveries that I have tried flashing are the ones linked to in the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877217 thread. Both http://celticstorage.co.uk/cm10/CWM_v6.0.1.5_emmc.zip and http://celticstorage.co.uk/cm10/TWRP_v2.3.1.1_emmc.zip are doing it. I have a 16GB that ive kept (rooted) stock forever.
What happens is i go to boot to recovery, go through cyanoboot to recovery, and then CWM freezes up and blackscreens after I try to wipe something or install a zip, TWRP just locks up immediately and gives me a black screen. Any help fixing this would be greatly appreciated.
Use this thread to install CWM, I'm not a fan of TWRP. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25786947 I used this and had no problems updating

This has been happening to me occasionally. I have found that when I get the black screen, pressing the Power button launches Recovery (CWM in my case). See if that works for you.
I now have the exact same problem. I've always ran off emmc. It says cwm 6.0.1.5 is installed. When I try to either wipe, or install zip-from-sd, cwm freezes then goes to the black screen. I cannot install any zips, so right now the tablet has nothing installed only a freezing cwm recovery it seems. I can use the power button to get out of the black screen and into cwm thru cyanoboot all day, but get nothing but these same steps reoccurring. Freeze, then black sod. I'm ready to try anything but cannot flash anything.

Ok, I have posted this on a different day. Try this with a blank sd card. Look at the bottom post called "Here is a video"
It a external boot cwm v.5 but you can copy this into your sd then flash and you have cwm v6.0.1.5 internal. Either way you have two ways to do recovery (external and internal):victory:

Well, I think I need to clarify more. Maybe somebody can help if I give more info. I've had cm7 running perfect, then decided to install cm10. I first flashed a cwm 6.0.1.5 zip to emmc. I did a factory reset via this recovery thinking my next move would be to flash the cm10 zip I'd put on the sd. No joy. This is where I'm at now.
In recovery it freezes and reboots to the "2 androids" screen with a sod. I hold power for 20 sec.s to turn off, then turn back on and get to cyanoboot fine. There, if it's allowed to just boot it freezes at the 2 androids. If I hold "n" to get the menu and recovery (6.0.1.5) it looks normal, will boot to recovery OK until anything is selected like the cm10 zip. It freezes before any selections can be finalized, and boots to that sod screen.
I know nothing of ubuntu! Sorta scared to go there with my limited knowledge. But will read up if it's required. Is it possible that this new recovery image don't play with what is currently on the sd? Is there anything I can put there that it may recognize in order to get a flash? Man, I'm lost!

It looks like you have already resolved this from this thread.
Ok, basically I'll go step by step.
1. Download ubuntu iso from ubuntu website (you can donate or put 0$ then download iso) and burn it to cd. 5 minutes
2. Stick the cd into a system that you don't plan to look at the video that is showing you the process and boot it up from a reboot and not from within windows. Select the left square which basically load the ubunbu from cd but does not install anything to your hard drive.3 minutes
3. You can view the whole video but I would skip to the section in video (3:28 watch to 4:43, 6:56 watch to 8:06 ) where I mentioned the setting the two flags in your sd after quick format fat32 and extracting the four files into your sd within ms windows platform from the post . I did this with a normal mini sd card adapter and not the usb stick adapter he used in the video. Since you are doing this to a blank mini sd then there really nothing to worry about since it is blank in the first place. 2 minute
4. If you had your apps backup with titanium backup then it still will be on the main mini sd and not the one that working with for this recovery.
5. I notice you did not mention wipe dalvik cache from your post. You should always wipe dalvik then wipe factory then do a single flash to test boot up.. You can flash gapps after a successful boot up into jellybean. (here's a video showing that I'm using external cwm v.5 even though its recommended to use v.6 .) You can always use cwm v.6 on your next cm10 test rom or use cwm v.6 to reflash to same rom once a successful boot up have been obtained with external cwm v.5. This purpose is to get it running on your nt.
6. Be patient for the first boot. Should not be more than 5 minutes max. It will look black then load. If it boot loops then wipe dalvik then wipe factory and do a single flash to test boot up again.
This will at least get cm 10 flavored rom on to your nt.

Got it back! Thank you for your help & patience. Also for the timely responses. I now have a bootable "recovery sd card" for curing these type problems. I've labeled it & filed away for any future borks of this kind! And I have cm10 up & running stable.

I was trying to go from 1.1 to 1.2 and apparently did something wrong along the way. Now when I turn it on, I get the 3 birds screen, followed by G-Tabdevs screen, then Vegan-Tab until it goes black. I do have clockwork mod installed on it. Is there a way to install recovery files directly on a micro SD card and fix it that way back to stock ROM?
Please help! I've been reading forums all day trying to figure out how to fix it and am not having any luck!

Try wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, Wipe Dalvik Cache if all else fails try starting over with nvflash

When changing to a custom ROM from the Stock ROM you will need CWM installed so that before installing the custom ROM you can wipe data factory reset which the Stock recovery doesn't have that option. Vegan-Tab also has versions that are also compatible with BL 1.1 as well as 1.2. Make sure that you load up the right one. To fix your issue you will need to install CWM recovery through NVflashing just that in. Using the information on this link should get you that added onto your device and then you can just boot into that and wipe data factory reset then reboot back into the System and be good. Why would you want to root just the stock? You don't really need to go through all that mess as long as you understand the NVflash process. NVflash will apply CW recovery with stock allowing you to install the custom ROM that is in that is based on that bootloader. There use to be a site called NVflash for dummies, but I believe that the operator shut it down or sold it. When I get some time I will try to post in the General forum the different NVflash collections and host the links. Even send a message to the administration to sticky it for everyone.
