Hi S2 user, :angel:
I will buy a new S2 phone soon. I need a little help from you guys. I need to know something about S2 :laugh:
My old phone is Xperia Arc S. This phone need following step to flash kernel and rom.
Kernel:
For flash a new kernel, I need to unlocked the bootloader first. Then this phone can flash any kernel anytime. But unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty.
Rom:
For flash a new rom, as long as the rom does not need to have specific kernel, in other word, stock based rom, no unlocked bootloader required. Just install the CWM and flash the rom.
How about S2 guys? Do I need to unlock something before flash kernel and rom? Can someone explain clearly or likes how I explain my old phone.
p/s- i read in some thread, doing a factory reset in cwm will make S2 brick? hard brick? can't even power on the phone. OMG is it true?

You don't have to unlock. Just download Odin and flash all the ROMs/kernels you want. As for the cwm brick bug, your phone will only brick if you factory reset through CWM in 4.0.4. In other versions you should be fine.

S2 is the best phone to flash No problem with bootloader lock, you download Odin und happy flashing

Thanks for your reply. For the brick bug, how come I want to factory reset when flashing new rom? And I think latest firmware for S2 is 4.0.4. Correct me if im wrong.

I am currently installing 4.1.2, unofficial of course
The brick Bug problem by 4.0.4 only with Stock Kernel ! when you have 4.0.4 on your phone you flash a save Kernel (Siyah, Dorimanax .....) with Odin (only Odin not Cwm )
and it was save .After you can flash wath you want

I see. So the brick bug actually come from the kernel inside firmware 4.0.4. Not the entire 4.0.4 firmware. Is other custom kernel likes you mention (Siyah, ..) is 100% safe?

You factory reset when installing ROMs to make sure there are no errors. Plus with siyah kernels, you can't be 100% sure your phone won't brick when factory reset in CWM. Best is to flash 4.0.3 before doing anything else.

Guys.. 1 more question.
When I get my S2, I plan to flash custom rom like aosp or aokp but not stock rom.
Do I need to root my S2 first before flash any rom? Because my Xperia Arc S, I do not need to root because root come inside with the custom rom zip. So when I flash a new rom, my Xperia automatically root. No need to do other step.
I'm curious about this because I see in some thread, talking about cf root or something like that. The thread is very updated. Looks like it very necessary to do it at least once to have root before flash any custom rom.
Please explain for me about this root. Thanks guys.

I'm not sure about CF root though. Although the ROM I am in now has built in kernels, I still think its best to root first as some ROMs may not have the built in kernel (never searched other ROMs not entirely sure). I might recomment siyah kernel though

uhh.. So root is come from kernel? Ermm.. so it different than xperia. So if I flash siyah kernel, I do not need to root?

Some people want to simple root their phone and don't care too much for custom roms and stuff. So for such people, they can simply root their phone using one of the many rooting methods mentioned.
However, if your primary aim is to install a custom rom/ kernel, you can use Odin to flash a custom kernel on your phone. (like siyah, dorimanx, Philz, the list goes on..) and you'll have root. Thereafter you can install a custom rom compatible with the kernel. Earlier on it was simple. Flash siyah or dorimanx and any custom rom will work on it. Kinda like a 'one size fits all' deal. However, right now with new mali drivers etc, some versions of a kernel are reqd based on which rom you plan to install. (JB with new mali drivers or JB without those new mali drivers/ICS)
CF-Root is the method I'd used..but right now it's not recommended, since if you're on certain 4.0.4 firmware, that is susceptible to the emmc brickbug I'm sure you've read about. Siyah, dori, etc kernels are safe.

For S2 we can. Because it won't increase your flash counter. But I never tried flashing through CWM.

There are two ways of flashing a kernel.
1. Use the .tar version of the kernel and flash via Odin
(the same way you'd flash the cf-root kernel you'd mentioned in a post above. I'll assume you know the steps as they're mentioned in chainfire's post. Or there are many posts on that topic)
Advantages: tried and tested route, simple one step method. You're rooted and have a custom kernel in about 30 secs.
Disadvantage: You rely on Odin and the connection to your computer which some don't trust. Increases flash counter.
2. Use the .zip version of the kernel and flash via CWM.
Since in this case you need CWM to start off with, you can use Rachmat3's method described HERE to get temporary CWM first.
Advantages: No computer needed. Everything happens through your phone. Flash counter isnt increased.
Disadvantages: Can be a little finicky at times..but you'll get there eventually. Involves 2 steps. First get temporary CWM, then install custom kernel via cwm.

Another disadvantage of "not using" odin is when you cant enter cwm.
I use cwm and mobile odin.I flashed a kernel and couldnt access cwm nor phone would boot.
So I had to fix it using my pc via odin.
I just successfully rooted my phone using the DooMLoRD method. I wan't to use a Jellybean custom rom(probably aokp). What kernel do I need? I have a Galaxy S2 with version 2.3.4 and gingerbread.uckh7.
You need one with cwm baked in. It's that simple. The rom you select will flash the recommended kernel

Ok, but don't I need to backup my phone(contacts,apps,etc) with CWM recovery before I put a ROM on it? That would mean I need a CWM kernel right?

These are really basic and common questions that you are asking and can be easily found by searching. I'm just giving you a fair warning, because you will be flamed by others for not searching.
Creating backups via CWM is not a requirement to flash anything. It is highly recommended that you do create backups though (especially if you're new to this), in case something goes wrong while flashing stuff.

Sorry if the Answer was staring me in my face but I'm not sure about upgrading to the CyanogenMod because of the superbricking I might get..
If any help can be given as to whether I am safe to do it, it will be much appreciated, My android version is 4.0.4, Build number imm76D.XWLPT.
I have just rooted it with XWLPW-ROOT-CWM6, and It seems to have rooted fine.
Will be much appreciated if I can get any help as to whether I can Flash it with CyanogenMod and everything will be fine..

EDIT: Yeah I just realized about having the Superbrick bug, I must have a kernel that is not liable to bricking, I rooted it with PhilZ touch 3 and when I go into recovery mode it says CWM Base version: 6.0.1.8 at the bottom, Am I safe from the bug?
You're safe as long as you don't perform a wipe from stock recovery in 4.0.4 (and not all phones have an insane chip). So yes, you can flash CM.

and If I dont do a wipe? wont it be stuck at boot as the Guide says it will?
I highly recommend you read the discussion thread for the version of CM you're wanting to try in General section. So you can get a handle on other people's experiences with it, bugs/flaws/annoyances/features/etc. I never flash a rom without reading the first 10 pages of those threads & the last two weeks or so worth of posts so I know what I'm in for.
I agree. And you always have to perform a full wipe if you change firmware.

yes thank you I will, but do I wipe my phone before I install CM? or..? during it..? I'm scared of this superbricking ^-^, I have flashed my GS1 before with no problems, but problems arose and I've been out of the game for a while, and have forgotten phones and roms etc for quite a bit ^-^

I assume you've read guides about how to flash a rom? Copy the zip-file to your phone, back up, wipe and flash.
You don't have to be scared of this superbrick bug because you're already running a custom kernel.

Well, I was trying to root my phone so I don't think so, now that I think of it no, its only root and clockwork recovery mode thingymajig because file size only 7mb so if it was only root, my build number and everything is as same as before ^-^,
That's what I am so confuzzled about, I need to downgrade to a custom rom that must come with a custom kernel right to be able to upgrade to cyanogen right...? otherwise ill brick it?
No. Make sure you flash a custom kernel (for example Siyah) with Odin. Then there's no need to flash other firmware first before upgrading. Just wipe your device in CWM (after the back up), and flash the rom you want.

Thanks, thing is a lot of things are outdated like the guides, do you know if I can use the latest odin which is out that apparently is for the S3? I've spent two days trying to do research on this and im failing quite badly :'(

Make sure you have kies installed or at least the drivers.
Reboot into download mode
Run ODIN 1.85
Flash Siyah kernel (.tar) via PDA section
Boot into recovery run backup
Wipe data/factory reset
Flash CM zip file.

Btw, if you have any apps/appdata you need to restore after wipe you can restore them from your nandroid backup using appextractor.

Q1. In which process of flashing i am modifying my bootloader? (while flashing cwm, kernal etc..)
Q2. When i flash stock ROM through Odin, do i restore the kernal, recovery and the flash counter?
Q.3 Is flashing a ROM after root is a risky thing?
Q.4 Can I flash a rom directly after rooting and flashing CWM? (without changing kernal?)
Q5. What is kernal compatibility? like some kernals are JB only. And does every ROM contains it's own kernal?
Q6. Is there a way to root and get cwm without getting the stupid yellow triangle?

hallo im also new to rooting but flashed cm10.1 yesterday with root and can share what i did.
i also got i9300 nordic version of the s3. and downloaded some files
odin 3.07
cfroot 3.64
cm10.1
gapps from 03-2013
i resettet my phone and enabled USB debugging and put the phone in download mode and startet up odin and made sure its connected and loaded cfroot.tar and flashed and the phone rebootet itself and installed the ness. apps for rooting. then i bootet up in recovery manager and went to install from sdcard and installed cm10.1 and then gapps and then did factory reset and dalvik wipe and rebootet and it bootet up CM10.1 and deleted /0 folder on the phone which was empty folder from previous touchwiz samsung rom
and yes there are risks but i did this 2 times. tw to cm10 and then back again but everything went problem free. so the risk ppl are talking about is mostly likely cuz some broke and if u mess up it breaks. so it can happen.
q1; when u flash cfroot the bootloader changed and it changes counter from 0 to 1.
q2: when u flash stock back with odin it flashes rom and bootloader/recovery but counter is the same but can be fixed easily. ( did it myself between my 2 flashes so when i flashed back to CM10 it still was on 1
q3: i think its everything thats risky. dont think root and rom flashing are more risky than others
q4: dont know what u mean exactly. i didnt mess with kernals. CM10.1 has a good one i think.
q5: dont either
q6: i dont have any yelly triagle on my cfroot+cm10.1. theres a lille read thing in the left corner like 2mm long that shows u got flashed.

For kernels that support both go here or here. At the moment Siyah or Goggy Max are the people's choices I assume.

Any flashing involves risk from almost no risk to a much bigger risk for those that dont read the basics and follow instructions .

1. You can flash boooader separately or when you flash stock roms. (I can be wrong but this is what I know)
2. I never done that but yes for first two, not sure about flash counter, you may still have to clear them with TA first.
3. As above answer, it's always risky to do stuff without proper knowledge and no guarantees even after proper knowledge but mostly no.
4. Yes.
5. Kernels are essential part of your phone and they are compatible with your os version only and also ur phone model. So if a kernel is for s3 4.2.2, you can't flash it over to amy other model or os version. Yes for second part.
6. No. Triangle away may remove your flashing counter but as long as you have custom anything and your rom status is modified that triangle will be there.

look, the question i am trying to ask is that can i flash aokp Rom over Siyah's kernal ( siyah's kernal is samsung kernal) what will happen?
Will i Brick my phone?
And if every ROM has it's own kernal so every new rom will replace my old kernal??
How to keep my prev kernal?

Siyah supports both cm and stock. Yes, you cam flash cm over stock or siyah kernel.
You have to flash your kernel again after every rom flash.

As long as the rom comes with a kernel, which is the normal base, you have to flash the kernel again. Usually you can do this direct from recovery before the full reboot.
As long as the kernel supports your rom type (see each kernel's thread for it), you should be fine as long as you follow the instructions.

Can i flash any 4.1.2 rom (aosp like miui or aokp etc) on googy max,
and in which process is the bootloader modified?

bootloader no clue, I never touched it, too dangerous to mess up stuff.
for flashing googy, usually you do it in CWM or via Odin. Check out the thread and read the instructions. Syiah's thread also got a huge amount of guides in the first couple of posts and they should be valid somehow for Googy as well as it is based on Siyah.

Please do not start messing with bootloaders .
Logic says read the instructions for the kernel you want to flash .
Its a CWM file and flashed via recovery .
You really should bother yourself to read the basic faqs and guide .

The bootloader isn't modified. The bootloader *shows* modified by reading other data.

Hi everyone!
Let me start off by saying that I am not one of those who directly ask questions before reading. Honestly, I have been reading from guide to guide and it is because of the many guides on the forum and Google that I have become confused on where to start.
I have rooted and flashed ROMs + kernels on my old phone, so I know most of how it works, but its the first time I use a Samsung phone, so I would really love some help to get started.
All in all, I have only few questions, but important ones I would love to be covered. Better safe than sorry, right?
Let's get started:
I am currently running stock JB - to get root I shall just flash CF-Root, or is anything else recommended?
Once rooted, is there any recovery I shall use that is more "stable" than any other? CWM, CWM Touch, TWRP etc.? Lets say I want to try NeatROM + Apolo kernel, will that require any specific recovery?
If I want to try different ROMs out, like to go from NeatROM to SlimBean to CM11, can I do all that by using the same recovery? I know about the full wipes, I just want to make sure I can flash other ROMs straight away or if I need to change things before?
That is all for now. Once this is covered up, I highly believe I can take care of myself in this huge community and to help others too once I get a little experienced

Hmm,as all your questions are somehow recovery/kernel related,you may try flashing Philz kernel.It's basically a stock kernel+advanced cwm recovery.You'll get root too.Its cwm can flash all roms up to android 4.3.1.I would call this option a safe and easy bet.
Also,if you want to try kitkat roms,like cm11,you'll have to update to kitkat compatible recovery,like cwm 6.0.4.7 etc,first.

Thanks for the reply! Appreciate the help! From what I can see, that also roots the phone, so this could be the easiest way to go :good:

And one more question: It says cwm6, does this mean I shall use this recovery for JB or KK ROMs?
I am getting close to flashing, just need this final step
Look at your rom's build number and choose accordingly.To check,go to settings/about device.
Use this kernel only for stock/stock based JB or ICS,as it has older,kitkat incompatible, CWM.
To flash 4.4.x roms,you can do it by following these simple steps:
1.Download a 6.0.4.x or newer CWM for i9100.
2.Boot to Philz recovery.Do a nandroid backup.
3.Flash new CWM.
4.Reboot recovery.
5.Full wipe,then flash chosed kitkat rom+gapps.
6.Reboot and enjoy!!

I just didnt quiet get the custom JB part then, to flash a custom JB such as the one on your signature, SlimSaber 4.3, I shall use...?

With the CWM 6.0.3.2,which is latest in Philz kernel,you can flash all Jelly Bean roms(4.1.x to 4.3.1).This includes both stock samsung 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and custom JB roms,like AOSP(that SlimSaber 4.3.1 is),CM,AOKP and so on...Just no KitKat love.
Don't forget to do a nandroid backup and EFS(this is vital) backup in recovery before you start. Just in case you know.
