International Bands? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Anybody know whether the Verizon GN 2 supports international GSM bands for roaming abroad?

Yes it does. It's listed on the Verizon website.

When pre-ordering the Note 2, it asked me whether the device would be used internationally or not.
Not sure if that helps answer your question or not...

Does this mean that I can purchase a local (overseas) SIM card and use that or that I can bend over the counter and let Verizon have its way with my wallet while I pay their outrageous overseas roaming fees?

All other Verizon LTE devices with enabled GSM capabilities have been unlocked so that you can use local SIM cards when out of the country. While it has yet to be 100% confirmed with the Note 2, I don't see why they'd start doing it now (especially when major exclusives like the DNA that were just released are unlocked).

I realize it is always dangerous to rely on anything you hear form the Verizon salespeople but I have heard from several that what you just wrote is incorrect. Some of their phones are and others are not according to those spoke to and they do not know yet whether or not the Note 2 will be a global phone.
Has anyone heard definitively yet whether or not the Verizon Note 2 will be global and unlocked so that you can put in a foreign sim card when overseas like you can do with the Razrs?

Care to point out where you saw it? I looked on VZW's site, and they don't have any of the network capabilities posted there yet, and Samsung's site for the VZW Note II has the incorrect info posted for network connectivity.

It says it on verizons site if you go to the phone's page when shopping but not on the big info page you go to if you click the add on there homepage. Also when I pre-ordered mine it asked if I wanted global set up on the phone.

Thanks. Why would anyone ever think that a HUGE picture on the homepage of VZW would take you to an actual device listing and not a different page that looks like a device listing?

My question is does "global" mean that you can use it abroad using Verizon's sim card and paying Verizon's global roaming rates or does "global" mean the sim card is unlocked and the phone with recognize a foreign sim card when overseas so you can pay the much lower local rates? The Razr's can do the latter but I have yet to make sure iot is also true for the Note 2. That is a HUGE difference for anyone who spends a significant amount of time out of Verizon's service areas.
If it isn't SIM unlocked, you should be able to call in to VZW and request a SIM unlock code assuming you meet not-so-strict prerequisites.
Very thanks to you all the news, looking forward to your update again

And there's always the possibility it will just be gsm unlocked by the community as in the case of the Verizon GS3.

Verizon's S3 doesn't officially have global capabilities yet. They said it would be updated to be capable, but that has yet to happen. My guess is that it will come with the Jelly Bean update, whenever that drops.
Verizon's Note 2 will be global out of the box, and like all other LTE devices released on Verizon so far, it will be unlocked.

Just so we are clear, you mean all the other global capable LTE devices right? (I can think of several phones off the top of my head that did not support anything but LTE/CDMA)

Even the non-global devices are SIM unlocked for LTE use (although, due to differences in used bands from network to network, and in technologies used for voice, it's pretty much a moot point). So technically, every LTE device that has been released on Verizon has been unlocked, regardless of GSM capabilties. That's why I differentiated between the two in my post - 1) Verizon's Note 2 will be global out of the box, and 2) like all other LTE devices released on Verizon so far, it will be unlocked.
An unlocked SIM slot for LTE means by default that it's also unlocked for GSM if the device has a GSM radio that's enabled. That's really what I was getting at - all Verizon LTE devices are SIM unlocked (regardless of what hardware radios they actually have), so in turn, any that have enabled GSM capabilities will be GSM unlocked as well. There certainly are a few Verizon LTE devices that don't have a GSM radio (such as the Galaxy Nexus), and they're not capable of global use. They're still SIM unlocked though, but just for LTE.
So, all Verizon LTE devices are SIM unlocked, but not all Verizon LTE devices have GSM capabilities. Any Verizon LTE device that does have enabled GSM capabilities will be SIM unlocked for GSM use.

Gotcha.
I wonder if the SIM slot on VZW's version will be accessible unlike Sprint's version which is global but inaccessible.

No, it won't be sealed like Sprint's. Sprint is the only U.S. carrier who seals their SIM cards in. Verizon does not do this. You'll be able to remove and replace the SIM card freely.

Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 to have AWS 4 Band (Tmobile LTE Capable?)

Hi,
So I've read the FCC documents located here: LINK
Page 1 and Page 5 are the most interesting! These state that the Verizon model SCH-i545 will have AWS band 4 (of course 13 too) which does support T-mobiles LTE network right? It never states 1700/1200 frequencies.
Thing I want to know from the pros is will this phone indeed offer LTE support for T-Mobile or and I'm just seeing things?
Also, for all the other people that are wondering if the ATT model will offer LTE support for T-Mobile as well? It will since it supports both bands 4 and 17 But wait is that AWS band 4?... the jury is out on that! -_-
Many Thanks

If I am correct, Verizon phones do not use sim cards (CDMA) and AT&T and T-Mobile are GMS (sim phones). So even if the bands are supported, I don't see how a Verizon phone would work on T-Mobile or AT&T unless they are CDMA / GSM dual phones. And even then they would have to be unlocked.

All of the major Verizon releases over the past year have come GSM unlocked. They are world phones that contain GSM and CDMA radios. I'm using a Verizon iPhone 5 on the Straight Talk (AT&T) network currently.
All lte phones have sim cards as it is a gsm technology. My girls verizon gs3 has a sim. As far as it being compatible that is a hell of a question.

Yes! I sold my iPhone 4s to get Samsung galaxy s4 and it sold to someone over in the UK world (Ireland) that says it works! Lol.
I've also seen threads about sim unlocking the Verizon S3 for domestic and international use. Some people use HiAPN as system app along with other steps and viola... Working on whatever network you want
Question is... Am I seeing right that Verizon S4 will support AWS Band 4 for t-mobile?

Hey this is one question i have lingering on my mind. How is the StraightTalk connection? Is it any good? Are there call drop issues? And do they have data plans?
if i buy a tmobile s4 will it work on verizon??
I know most things are under the catagory of speculation/rumor but i was wanting to to check out tmobile network for a bit.... the no contract is appealing. If i bought the phone outright and ending up not liking tmobile i would switch to verizon. Short of selling the tmobile and getting a verizon phone i was wondering about just activating the same phone on verizon?
Will there be "one phone" in US or would they all have thier own modem chips i guess is the real question....
thanks for the guesses and speculat'n!
You have to consider its Verizon and they have 700Mhz LTE and you can't roam on AT&T's 700Mhz so I would not expect to access Verizons AWS spectrum on T-Mobile or vice versa. Remember when they said LTE was the unifying spectrum to allow for easier use across networks and carriers, well that was a pile of BS.
Great news, but I heard verizon was purposely going to burn in their logo onto the amoled screens.

Wrong: those "700mhz" frequencies are different bands. Both T-Mobile and Verizon are building out LTE on the same band: 4 (AWS). They will be interoperable device-wise.
AT&T also owns a lot of AWS, and though they're currently running LTE on it only in one market (somewhere in Oklahoma IIRC), all their LTE devices do come with band 4 enabled.
The more I read about the differences, the more I'm convinced that the Verizon model is more cross compatible with all other services. It's still the only CDMA model. But it's also gsm unlocked if you know how to program APNs. Any thoughts?

if we ever get to the point where we don't need 3g at all any more (CDMA) and we can get VoLTE and use the LTE band exclusively that will eliminate a lot of the incompatability between Verizon and GSM carriers .

When we get to that point, Verizon will basically be a GSM carrier. Considering LTE is just an evolution GSM, both developed by 3GPP.

Not just Google...all the manufacturers could do it. But...don't get your hopes up. That situation is not in the carriers' nor major manufacturers' interests, and they sit on the standards bodies. No one represents the users/customers.

G900T on Verizon

So my Verizon contract expired so I hopped over to T mobile and got myself the S5. Tmobile's service has been appalling IMO and I want to switch back to Verizon. Will my S5 work on Verizon? Do I have to do anything with the phone? I have had it for over 40 days and from what I have read I just have to bring it to the tmobile store and ask them to unlock it. After I do that will I be able to take it to the verizon store for service? Thanks!

I thought this was not an issue because my understanding is the 900T was basically the international edition of the S5 so it had all the different bands. Why is it legal to even sell me a $650 phone that is locked to one provider?
What carriers CAN I use this phone with?

Anything but Verizon or Sprint. You're correct that it's pretty much the international edition, but other than Japan and a few other countries, everyone uses GSM. As to why it's legal, blame Verizon and Sprint, not the 99% of other carriers.

I took mine to Verizon and was told the LTE bands weren't the same as theirs. I showed them that the unlocked TMO S5 does in fact have the required bands. Finally, the manager admitted that it is Verizon's choice NOT to accept other carrier's phones. At least he was honest, so I'm not blaming him.
I am still on VZ's unlimited hotspot, and I use a LOT of data (over 25GB last month. I was ready to give it up just so I didn't have to carry the little bugger everywhere. When I found this out, I went back to Consumer Cellular with my phone, and it seems to have the same coverage as VZW. VZW can keep feeding me the GBs since they won't accept my phone... and I'm paying less lol.

[Q] Sprint G3 LTE freq

Hi
was thinking of signing up for this great phone. Thing holding me back is whether if I travel overseas say to Asia/EU, would I be able to pop in a 4G/LTE sim card (assume unlocked by Sprint) and use the local data plan? The common band in the country I visit would be band 3,7. Would this work?
I think the 3G should work but not sure about 4G.
Thanks for any enlighten information.
Cheers.

The sprint G3 has bands 25, 26, and 41. I doubt it has any other bands.
All American variants are capable of running on all American networks, if they are SIM unlocked. The only American band not covered that I am aware of is band 5 on ATT.
They should work on 4G almost anywhere in the world really. I just checked again and yeah, other then band 5 all American variants of the G3 have all other bands in the radio and are capable of running anywhere you have a sim for it. Cheerio.

Why wouldn't you just buy an international LTE Tab S3? The VZW version is going to have their crap and modifications on it and most likely will be updated 6 months behind an international version if at all. Do you know if the VZW version supports T-Mobile's band 12? The international version doesn't and folks on T-Mobile get 8MB down in those markets that rely on band 12 heavily.
While all of the above is true, VZW devices should be SIM unlocked out of the box due to their block C agreement. The primary band for TMO is band 4 so you should be fine but yes, it is missing band 12 so if you live in a band 12 area, you're possibly giving up some coverage, particularly indoors. I'm in Chicago and since we don't have band 12... Doesn't matter to me.

Postpay Device Unlocking Policy
We do not lock most phones or tablets that are activated with our postpay service, either during or after the term of your service contract or Device Payment Plan installment sales agreement.
We do not lock our 4G LTE devices, and no code is needed to program them for use with another carrier.
