Possibly

It's very very light....I forget I have it in my pocket sometimes, and its apparently really water resistant. I spilled on myself, while it was in my pocket T_T

Just got mine today and I already lrn'd2root

Not only does mine make calls.... but people can actually dial a special number and call me!!!
Most people don't seem to be all that impressed by it, but these are non tech lovers. They look at it and are like "oh. . . it's pretty". I don't think there is anything I could show them on the screen that would impress them much.

some cool things I have found out,
it may be old news for you, and some were mentioned in tech blog space before
1. during my call, i turned the phone face down and it automatically turn to speaker. which was mentioned by engadget and ac, but see it working and give convenience, it is a good fun.
2. go to settings->apps-> all, I can actually disable quite a number of pre-installed bloats, without root or any other hacks. this is awesome. for example, amazon, viewnidi, vz navigator, vz backup plus all those bs, i can disable them, without worrying that if it will fc later or cause trouble =).
oh, disabling those stuff can give me much lower memory usage, and improve battery life because many of them are running at the background.

Guess what Titanium Backup uses to freeze apps by default on Android 4.x. It just uses that Disable feature as far as I can tell.
A few times when I've pulled my phone out friends have mostly just commented on the size, but I don't go on about it with non-tech people usually. I try not to be too showy.
As for cool stuff to do with it, it's really kind of gotten me in to digging in and finding mods to do to it on my own. I haven't really done that so much on my previous phones; only relied on pre-done mods, like I got the recent apps button to turn in to a menu button a good bit before anyone on the thread seemed to get it working, although a lot of the issues probably have to do with people using plain notepad, when better luck would probably be had with a "programmer's" notepad that'd probably load and save with UNIX style newlines.
Also, it gives quite a phone-bulge.

Certain apps/processes can't be disabled in stock Android, but TiBu let's me freeze them.

Honestly Youtube has to be the most impressive thing you can show anyone... the HD quality over 4g is simply great and then they try to load the same video on their apple crap and it looks like 8 bit mario... just make sure its a newer video from within the last year or so or the quality will be horrid.
mainly because everyone has that app and can compare side by side... and be like wow

That's when you may run into problem.
Having root access and do stuff like that, will give unexpected drags in some apps which will affect your battery life or other functions.
For example if some functions or apps are providing system level service to others, and unfortunately if some applications uses them.. and you frozed them... then it is totally depending on the app developers' handling in such case.
either kept polling , or throwing exceptions, FCs etc.

When is this going to be available? I'm sick and tired of having to go through MotoBlur and all those other ****ty AT&T apps. I just want a regular computer OS on a cellphone so that I can talk to people over skype via. wifi. Is that so hard to ask?
So, how can I go about this? Or is this still not available?
Still unavailable, unless you want a extremely unstable and slow rom, best bet right now is to flash gingerblur

It definately does not de-blur. Its just themed as aosp but the rest of blur is still there. Its goal is to become de-blurred but were far from that. Id say a few more weeks/ month or two.
I recommend cherryblur. I think it can provide what you're looking for. Upon loading it bypasses the MOTOBLUR setup process entirely and replaces the moto interface with LauncherPro, which is much more enjoyable to use. From there you can download SDK Stock App remover and Advanced Task Killer for complete control over what goes on under the hood of your phone. It may sound like a *****, but if you're a control freak when it comes to your personal devices like I am, it's well worth the effort.

Seems the SIM Free version is out in the UK. Does anyone own one and can get the Gingerbread rom for it? I'd like to have the atrix without the AT&T crap, but keep Motoblur... I'm from the UK so it would also be nice to have all the UK customisations and not US ones (e.g telephone no. spacing, en-GB language etc.)
One of the great things about open source is the hobbyist/developer side bringing us great enhancements and functionality for cheap or free. Then you have the ungrateful users like this are experts at *****ing, whining and demanding but not smart enough to go buy something like the nexus s or a phone that has had its bootloader unlocked more than a month and some development under its belt for awhile.
I voided my warranty.

If you want it that bad, then grab the lower spec Motorola Milestone. If you need one with an 850 3G Band, then get the Telus Motorola Milestone.
Ironically I know someone who went from the Atrix to the Milestone for this purpose alone, and they are actually happier because of no Motoblur.
Then again if I didn't have my SGS, I might have entertained the idea of going back myself since I truly hate Motoblur as well... (my Atrix is sitting on the sidelines waiting for official CM7 or Vanilla)

IMHO Advanced Task Killer needs to be laid to rest since the days of Eclair.
Froyo changed everything, and ATK hasn't worked properly since Froyo came out.
I recommend using "System Panel" instead. It shows you everything running in the background. You can kill programs just like ATK if you really want, but more importantly you can find the repeat offending programs that keep popping up and freeze them in Titanium Backup...

I am amazed at how many people still believe that ATK is a "must-have". It's such a gross misconception. Here is a thread that covers the topic quite comprehensively:

Exactly!
It blows my mind on how many people (even on other XDA boards) still suggest using 3rd party task killers.
There's no reason, especially with the Atrix, to use them anymore...

[Q] Anything DECENT for root users?

OK so this is like the 6th time I've rooted my device, after reading many threads / websites, etc, all saying how 'amazing' root is. Well, I'm still disappointed.
Is there anything good to use for root users?
OK theres titanium backup, but that's useless - to me - as bloatware doesn't bother me and I don't **** around with my device.
Granted, GameCih2 is good, but it rips the fun out of games after a while.
I can't seem to find any other root apps that make me think 'Damn, I'm glad I rooted my phone!' just so that I can use that app.
-Title, Thanks.
Rooting is often better when using alternate roms.

If you'd knew you wouldn't start threads like this. You're like a guy who buys a lawnmower just because everyone says how awesome they are, but you live in a flat. So you just store your lawnmower in the living room, and have no use for it. If you don't need root, don't root. Many of us need it for certain things we do with our phones. It's not because all the cool kids have it, so we have it also.
Likewise root ls required to carry out certain tasks.
SGS newbies seem to root phone just because rather than as a tool required .

The person that is happy with the device the way it came out of the box has no reason to root. I would think the average XDA member is not that user. The ability to have as much control of your device as possible is what root enables. For instance Titanium Backup allows me to backup my apps so when things go wrong I can restore my device much quicker without re-downloading every app.
Rooting allows the installation of Clockwork or Streakmod recovery which enable Nandroid backups of the entire system. Then to me the ultimate reason to root is to experience custom ROM's. These developers that take it upon themselves to improve the operating systems that run the devices are incredible. Doing things the billion dollar corporations can't or won't do to make the devices perform to the utmost of their abilities. This is not of course for people that don't f73k around with their devices. You have wasted you time 6 times.

[Q] Pull down menu problems

I just got my phone and most of the time when receiving a email I'll pull down the menu and it keeps going back up automatically. After trying like 3 times it finally stays down. Does anyone else has this issue?
Not to insult your intelligence or anything but are you pulling the bar all the way down? When I was on GB if I didn't pull it all the way down it'd wonk out on me and shoot back up if I did it too fast.

I had the same issue on GB. I head to drag it almost all the way down to the bottom of the screen. Now on ICS I can just flick the bar downwards and it does the rest.

Yes I pull it all the way down like 3 times then if lucky it will stay down. After reading emails the pull down menu works fine. The work arounds I found is to put my finger at the top of screen and quickly flick downward then it will stay. With my old phone using it's default rom and Cyanogenmod 7, this never happend. The second work around is to use a small app called, One Click Status Bar. Place it on the home screen and when it's tapped the menu drops down.

Your phone must be rooted to have ICS. I'm debating on doing this because I like using CyanogenMod. One of the problems with rooted phones is that the market doesn't recognize the phone and paid apps disappear and it force closes alot.

The force closes on the other hand do happen, but very rarely if you run a good rom, and don't do anything you're not supposed to

When a phone is rooted the Google server no longer knows what device is being used. You can check this out by logging into Google wallet and look under your device list. You'll also notice that some apps show up for different os like with gingerbread and some don't for ics. After rooting the server doesn't know what apps work with the phone and at times makes some of your paid apps disappear and preventing potential future downloads.

Very true, I apologize. But you must realize that this site EXISTS for the simple idea that we, the members of it(evidently not all of them), do not want our phones stock.
The only support you'll get from a stock ROM, is from the at&t store.
and the "was not" was meant that way. I feel its a stronger form of the word rather than wasn't
This discussion got troublesome and way, way off topic.
But the bottom line is man, if you want to stay stock, there's really nothing we can do, other than advise to wipe data/factory reset via 3e recovery.
What you may have thought you knew about issues that come by rooting your phone, are maybe 1 in a 100, and most likely caused by the person themselves.
There are a few ROM's that are based on at&t "official" leaks. but there rooted.

I think you may be confusing some of your facts. That may hold true for some unbranded chinese tablets running ICS. Those ROMs have to operate as a brand name "something else" just to get market to recognize the device.
The same is not true with our phones. Root away! The issues you're concerned about do not exist on name brand android devices.

The thing that may kill the DNA for me...

Its probably not what you think.
Battery is superb.
The screen, OMG its nice.
Phone is smooth as butter, despite heavy Sense.
Build quality is great.
However, so many games that I truly enjoy and have purchased do not work. The legacy menu button on so many apps eats screen real estate, and it is ridiculous.
I am aware that these aren't really the phone's fault entirely, but if the phone isn't a big seller, developers are going to drag their feet. That means we see fixes in months and in smartphone years, that's ancient.
So while I believe software will catch up, it will be later when 1080p becomes more mainstream. By that time, I am looking for another phone. So why do I want to suffer with incompatibilities?
Please don't tell me to sideload my stuff; I am getting incompatibility messages on launch as well.
As for the legacy menu, this is a two-fold problem.
1. Developers are lazy and not updating to Android standards like they should.
2. There is an abundance of false legacy menus.
The first issue needs to be fixed by app devs, period. The second one baffles me. I have a Galaxy Nexus. Not one of my apps has a legacy menu in it because if they did I wouldn't use it. Yet, my phone doesn't have a menu key either.
However, I am getting legacy menus, even in some games. What is worse, these menus don't work, or they replicate a clickable menu in the game. Why??? My Galaxy Nexus didn't have that issue. I can't even enjoy the screen to its full potential with legacy menus. I am aware I can mod this myself, but that isn't the point.
I know they are small nitpicks, but I think the screen in all its awesomeness might kill it for me as well with incompatibilities. I am not naive enough to believe that these will be cleared up any time soon.
The little black bar on the bottom doesn't bother me at all. I barely notice it. Just another one of those "opinions will vary" things.

The fact that this exists is kind of odd. When the One X(s) launched they had the same set up and it was even more annoying having less screen real estate to work with. HTC fixed it in the 4.0.3>4.0.4 update a couple of months ago. Basically, the recent apps capacitive button became a toggle. You were given three options:
1) As-is; launch recent apps
2) Long-press=recent apps, short-press=settings
3) Long-press=settings; short-press=recent apps
Check out the Teg3 One X dev forum. You should be able to find a solution you can port there.

Here's what the menu looks like...
Ironically, HTC removed that option for the DNA.
It finally pushed me overboard. The app compatibility, that is. I returned the DNA. I got tired of playing Russian roulette with app purchases and wondering if I was going to run into a problem.

VZW seems to enjoy butchering their devices from stock. There's a ton "enhancements" they made to the N2 that really don't make any sense. S-Planner is one of the coolest and most functional S-Pen enabled apps and they removed it and have Google Calendar set as the default. They also made the Wi-Fi notification toggle in to a Wi-Fi monitor so you have to go in to settings manually to turn Wi-Fi off and on. The N2 has a call and MMS blocking tool that they disabled also. Odd.
I agree about the menu button; it would have been better if it only took a small screen estate on either corners at the bottom instead.
As for compatibility issue, I have not yet came across that problem...well probably because I do not play any games. I'm sure many apps will start to optimize for the 1080p resolution, now that we have it on the phone.
I have been using Samsung Fascinate ever since it came out...even with the minimal level of developer support before it boomed with tons of roms, I had no problem using it for all of my essential needs. People usually assume that outdated devices are incapable of handling most tasks, but I think a single core is enough to cover a smartphone's functionalities. I bought the DNA because its spec somewhat overkills the current smartphone standards to the extent where it will be enough for another three or five years.
Technology will only continue to advance without ever having a "Peak", so I wouldn't stress over playing the waiting game for the next new thing to come out. Well, that's just me of course

Now that a 1080P phone has hit the market you can expect the spec wars to continue. The rumored SGS4 is supposed to have a 1080P display as well as an unannounced LG phone. People with the N10 are having the same issue. So it'll get resolved in time it's a matter of whether you're willing to wait.

The only issue is that those 1080p phones won't hit the mainstream market until April-May timeframe. This even further emphasizes the fact that DNA is the phone from the future... As an early adopter, I'm loving it!
Sorry to hear you returned the phone, it was great having you in this forum. Enjoy your alternative phone choice!
I am also disappointed with game incompatibility, but keeping the DNA as I don't play that much. My son was upset about angry birds star wars turning up as a black screen though.

Thank you for the kind words.
I really hope the device takes off. It has a ton of untapped potential.
I don't really game so I haven't come across any applications that don't work on this device. My two primary applications, however, are Facebook and Twitter...and the menu bar at the bottom is just a straight up pain in the ass. I don't understand why they couldn't either 1) add capacitive menu button or 2) do the menu buttons like the Galaxy S3/Note 2 etc. It just seems like an awful design decision to me, and I'm surprised more reviews didn't pick up on it.
It's things like this that lends to consumers thinking that Android lacks the 'polish' of iOS. I know it's not Android's fault by design, but the average consumer doesn't tend to care about AOSP vs. Sense, etc.
HTC completely changing sense on every update is baffling. They are so terrified of their market loss that it appears they have zero confidence.
And what happened to the button remap mod in 4.1? Gone.
I think this may be my last HTC phone if they don't get their **** together

You are definitely one of the most refreshing people that post here. I hope to see you around from time to time
Definitely admire your choice. I feel like the DNA is the better phone for me, but then again, I don't do any gaming. And the Note 2, with its screen size, S pen, memory and massive battery make it a good choice for you my friend. I wish I could own both.

Wow, this post was spot on! I'm an android newbie and DNA is my fist phone without the menu button. So all this time I'm seeing these 3 dots at the bottom taking up precious real estate and I JUST signed up in this forum so that I could ask what is it and how to remove it. I'm glad I found this thread cause I've about reached the point where I'm ready to return this phone back!!
Let me ask you this, do you think it will better? Also in the end I didn't get it, is it the apps fault or is it HTC sense that's at fault for not letting us have a choice. Also one final question, are there any other mods that allow you to change the setting, making the recent apps button act like a settings buttion?
and lastly THANK you for sharing my frustration! At least I know I'm not alone or crazy for being so annoyed that I'm losing at least .3 of an inch. What's the point of advertizing that it's a 5" phone then?!
this phone will get better with time .. it hasn't been out that long , nor has the unlock... The devs are starting to rip it apart , and then the fun starts

Note: it can be fixed through root and mods. HTC may patch it as well eventually.

Oh I know. The menu thing was fixable. It was the app compatibility that made me decide.

Pros, Cons, solutions, workarounds and opinions

Me and some other guys kinda highjacked another thread so I decided to open a new one here for people to share their opinions, thought and general arguments and if there are easy solutions to the matters that the DNA makes you sad, I did look through the first 10 pages of this section and didn't find anything similar so people, bash away, and bear in mind that what you say will shape my (and others) opinion and whether I should or shouldn't buy this damn amazing piece of equipment
This seems like a good idea, and I can definitely see this helping a lot of people. I'm extremely happy with my DNA thus far; stellar battery life and performance, and the build quality is superb (especially the literal edge-to-edge glass that feels like it flows off the front of the screen). It's also quite resilient - I had it sitting in the passenger seat of my car, got into a pretty serious accident, and the phone doesn't have a single scratch on it. Obviously I got very lucky, but yeah..
On another note, my only gripe is that I can't seem to delete 3 of the stock bookmarks (Google, VZW Home Page, and Your Guide Mobile). I've tried clearing the app data, but that didn't help. I'm not rooted, but I'd think there should be some sort of workaround.. any tips would be appreciated

I don't think that without root you'll be able to delete them, not sure though and I'm not suggesting you should root cause apart from the warranty being void there's always a risk of bricking, small but is there... I guess for now you gotta live with it.
One thing that annoyed me about the DNA is that they chose to put Back, Menu, and Multitasking as the buttons. So you still have to have the 3-dot menu on screen. Luckily, if you root the device, you can change the multitasking button to Settings (which is exactly what I wanted), so I'm thrilled to have that. The bloatware remover is great as well.
If you aren't afraid to root it, there is awesome stuff out there for it. I won't be using a rom without Sense because I actually like Sense a lot. The lock screen and camera software are the best that I've seen.
The USB flap is annoying, but I will definitely be getting a wireless charger.

Ah, alright. I'm planning on rooting it eventually.. at some point.. but as you said, there's always that risk lol. Plus, beyond that small issue with the 3 bookmarks, everything else about the phone is perfect even without root, so I can live with it Thanks for your input though!

Yeah, I've disabled a good amount of apps through settings, but I was talking about the preset bookmarks that show up in my browser and in my bookmark widget.. it let me delete the other 7 or so, but these 3 refuse to be deleted

on the one X you could change it through settings where you choose what the multitasking button does, if I remember correct when you put the button to show the settings menu in single touch and multitask on long press it dissappears, not sure if it works on the dna but give it a try and report back

I see what you mean. I just tried it myself and couldn't delete those 3 bookmarks either. Guess root is needed to delete them. Unfortunately, currently you cannot write to the system while booted in android on the DNA. You would have to do it through recovery somehow.

Why not try opera or chrome for browser as a default? I personally prefer opera mobile but try a few first, like maxton and skyfire

That's a good idea too. I almost never use the stock browser anyway. Boat browser has been pretty good to me as well although any of these would work. What I like about 3rd party browsers probably the most (aside from features) is the fact that I can exit the browser. With the stock one it will just keep running even if you back out of it.

true, whenever I flash a new rom and reinstall opera I always activate the exit button on options.
phones been surprisingly awsome on stock.
I rooted the phone so i could run wifi tether. No issues with disconnects and I can actually tether my phone and not have to plug it in for 6-8 hours.
Love the screen, not just how good it looks but the waterfall effect the glass has feels amazing to me. Overall, very pleased with my purchase.
the european version was just announced so I think I'm gonna be going for that cause it states a sd card slot in contrast to the dna,
all the other specs remain the same
so I guess I'll be attending another forum soon, hope you find help on this thread and pm me if I can help with anything

My biggest gripe (besides the 3 dot menu button) is the damn messaging app. Every single time I go into it, it 'refreshes.' So many times the app takes a few seconds to load and it shows everyone's phone numbers instead of the names. I just don't understand why.
I'm hesitant to switch to another messaging app because 1) I think they're ugly/love the look of the Sense app and 2) I love how I can see a new message on the Sense lock screen and swipe directly into it.

It sounds kinda weird, how many contacts and messages do you have? if it's not thousands I guess there might be something wrong
try another messaging app to see if it's persistant or just the sense messaging
I don't have that many contacts, and I definitely don't have that many messages. I limit it to 200 per thread (only a few people reach this), and I even go through and delete it down to like 10 threads that are the most important. Regardless, this shouldn't happen on a phone with 2GB of RAM. Frustrates me to no end.
I posted a thread about this in this section maybe a week or two ago, and a few users chimed in saying they were seeing similar behavior. I don't think it's just me.
Mine does the refresh on sms too. Its like 1 second though so not a big deal.
Had the phone for a week. Battery life has been excellent. This is the first time in 2 years I havent had to charge my phone at work at all. Consistently get well over 4 hours screen on time. Although I've noticed using non-sense launcher its not quite as good but still excellent.
The screen is amazing and even at 5 inches it fits comfortably in the hand. Even pushing this many pixels I have yet to notice anything id call lag.
The 3-dot menu can be annoying if you notice it. Hoping for an update somewhere to deal with that at some point. I've also had issues with Netflix not loading properly but I blame the app. Also, I've noticed when I change lockscreen style, like to productivity or something it doesn't work too smoothly. Not being able to change wallpaper on a screen longpress kinda baffles me as well.
The phone definitely has some quirks and some areas where HTC could have made the operation of things more efficient instead of adding unnecessary steps. But I would definitely recommend this phone to anyone it is really a pleasure to use.
