Bootloader unlock - Motorola Droid X2

I see from reading the XDA news articles that Verizon is now allowing the Sony Xperia Play to be unlocked now that is is a discontinued phone. I wonder if there's a chance that Big Red MIGHT allow our phones (and other disco'd phones) to be unlocked.
I don't know if they will go for this but it's worth a shot.

I doubt it. I dont even thing the phone is discontinued yet. I believe I still saw it in the Verizon store last weekend.
EDIT: Although, I dont see it on their website anymore.

Do you think that moto will do that?
They are lots of their phones discontinued and nothing happens, anyway it seems to be that development was gone because of locked boot.
Therr are not many things we can do now!

severely doubt it they have no reason to when they can make so much money off of new phones. why bother doing anything for old and discontinued phones the only reason that verizon would allow a phone to have an unlockable boot loader is that they cant make money off it and the device manufacturer has bugged the hell out of them to let it happen.

So, there's ANYTHING you can do with the phone once the bootloader is on?
I'm from Venezuela (sorry for the crappy english, trying my best here) and I buy a Unlock Droid x2, and trying up upgrading the Android to something more newer than 2.3.4 the bootloader lock. I was using it for a few days in WIFI with Whatsapp, Skype and Line. Now I can't find ANYTHING on how to bypass that lock.
I just lost my money? In a country with a monetary barricade like this, it's kinda a downer know I just waste 180 bucks just because I try (and fail) upgrade my phone.
I was reading around and find sites that will give you and "unlock" number based on you MEID, is that even work? I'll pay to have my phone unlock, if come to that, but I want to know I can at least do something!
I must add; I just want to be able to enter to the google play, install whatsapp, etc. I DONT WANT ANOTHER CDMA NETWORK ON THE PHONE.
I buy the phone with those opcions; I don't care if I cant send normal txt msjs, if I can at least use the phone!

all you can do in bootloader is flash .sbf recovery files
which model do you have, label under battery says MB870?

Is there a formal request form we can send verizon to free our old devices from bootloader lockdown?

[Q] Can someone explain the steps to getting a free replacement?

I've just become aware of the new replacement program for problem Fascinates. I've been reading the forums but it wasn't completely clear EXACTLY what i need to do in order to be offered a replacement. I bought my Fascinate on eBay like 3 months ago (pre-rooted with a Blackhole ROM i believe) and while i do like it, it does have it's share of issues. i get the phantom button press a lot, GPS is VERY slow to lock at times, i occasionally get random voicemails from calls i didn't know i missed, my screen timeout setting is constantly changing back to 15 secs when i set it to 2 minutes, and MMS rarely works.
so yea, from what i've read so far, it seems like i'm prime for a replacement. but i need to know first off, do i need to flash a stock rom or will it not matter? will i need to take it in and prove it's not working because it only has these issues sometimes and i may not be able to replicate on the spot? also what exactly do i need to say (and who do i call) in order to prompt them to offer me a new device? thanks in advance for the help and i apologize if this is explained somewhere already. i've looked and it just seems to mostly be people talking about their new phones and not how they actually got them.
1. Go to Walmart.
2. Buy knee pads and lip gloss.
3. Go to Verizon.
4. Put on knee pads and a good amount of lip gloss.
5. By now you should know where this is going.

Just act stupid and say your phone doesnt work right and yes u should change everythin to stock couz root voids your warranty. But sometimes they still replace even if i did it. But change back to be safe

You may have a problem because you didn't get the phone directly from vzw & they can find that out. Also, they're getting hammered right now with people trying everything to get this deal whether they need it or not. Seems like they're becoming a little more stringent with their criteria. But I think the real problem for you is where you got the phone.

Ugh! I hope you get nothing. vzw knows YOU didn't buy the phone from them.
good day.
I wish I could tell you good news, but I've been down this road before. My hub bought a phone off ebay and found out something was wrong with it that same day it came in the mail. He went to Verizon and asked them if they could do anything and they said since he bought it from ebay they can't do anything. They are going to look into your account and know that you didn't get it from them, so I don't think you have any hopes at all getting it replaced.
You could however flash it back to stock and try...if you don't succeed...keep it stock and put it back on ebay. The fassy's are still selling for quite a bit and use that to purchase new phone.
well thanks for all the help. some people seem really offended but the only reason i even asked is because people on other forums said they traded in their eBay Fascinates and got the deal. i don't know if the warranty is transferable or not, but it's still been out less than a year and should be covered. also, there is no way they can tell i bought it on eBay either. the most they should be able to see is when i activated it and maybe track the ESN back to the original owner, still doesn't say i bought it on eBay. i didn't buy it directly from Verizon but the guy i bought it from did. people were even having success with phones bought from Best Buy.
You don't understand.... It's people like you taking advantage that makes it harder than it needs to be for people actually having problems and honestly want to return the phone...

Do you think it only has to be from an authorized retailer? I bought mine from Best Buy and they never even asked me where I got my phone. So maybe they can somehow tell if it was either bought from them OR an authorized dealer OR maybe the reps that I worked with didn't care.
They probably won't be doing swaps anymore because ED05 is official and ready.

For sure the swap ended yesterday due to the new ED05 update. Right now, they're only offering replacement Fassys. I was however, able to talk them to giving me an early upgrade for the trouble since I REALLY hate this phone. Better than nothing, and they were real cool.

i understand perfectly. and don't you think your being a little extreme? it's not like my phone doesn't have issues. it WAS bought from Verizon and it has a warranty. so I didn't personally buy it from Verizon but what the hell difference does it make? if it's messing up and under warranty, they should fix it or give me a replacement. did you even read my original post? i said what was wrong with the phone so it's not like i'm making stuff up, i just wanted to know what they were listening for in order to qualify for the upgrade replacement since i have more than one issue. don't make me out to be the bad guy, read on other forums where people are just saying they have issues to get the upgrade when their phones work fine. i even saw one story where a store manager encouraged someone to say they were missing calls to get a Charge for free when the guy said he was saving money to replace his Fascinate. so it really falls on the reps to do their jobs anyway since they are supposed to actually check for issues, so isn't it their fault if they don't? i ended up not even calling anyway, so get off your high horse guy.
and no, i don't think they can tell where i bought it. they can most likely tell where it was originally purchased and see when and where it was activated and deactivated but how can they possibly know more than that? stop spreading propaganda.

i'll probably just wait for a new ROM based on the latest update now if that actually fixes the issues. sure the allure of a new device is intriguing (especially if it's free), but i don't dislike the phone, i just want it to work like it's supposed to.

I love the holier than thou forum white knights. I swear you relative moralists leave no forum untouched with your auto-ego stroking.
Listen, everyone who owns a Fascinate and went through the OTA update process had the same issue with missed calls and texts. Furthermore, even custom ROMs (CM7 included) experienced this issue. Until now, there was no work around and not everyone is an XDA daily driver and knows that ED05 has been released. We all went through the exact same run around waiting for Froyo, I know I for one wasn't about to sit back and wait for this release to be pushed back 4-5 times. I took the free upgrade and I don't feel the least bit bad about it. I even posted the script that worked for me on the first try, because at the time ED05 had no firm release date and I feel like everyone pumping out $200 for a phone and $100+ a month deserves a product that won't cause them huge issues like the Fascinate caused for me. I lost thousands in sales because I missed calls and the Google Voice missed notification wouldn't show up for 15-20 minutes.
Bottom line is, don't try to crucify everyone that asks for help with this situation. Odds are they don't know about ED05 being released and they probably don't trust Samsung to get an update out on time because they never have. The only reason this one came so fast is because Verizon/Samsung were losing their asses on replacement costs.
TLDR: Don't be a ****.

Tell them you lost it somewhere where there is a high volume of people coming and going i.e the mall, hospital etc. if you have insurance on your phone you should be able to get a new one
Sent from my I500 using Tapatalk
If you think you can call Verizon and say your phone is defective and expect them to send you something different then it wont happen.
1. You bought the phone off eBay, thus you no longer have a one year manufacture warranty.
2. Without the manufacture warranty they cant send you a replacement phone.
3. Your best option is to see if you have an upgrade or go through your insurance and see what kind of phone they will send you. You never know sometimes they send you UPGRADED phones!
To the people WHO ACTUALLY GOT THERE PHONE THROUGH VERIZON. If you are within a year and your phone is "defective" then you can call them and make it clear that you have done a full factory reset and everything you try doesn't work. They will then send you a replacement, it might be the same phone or you might get lucky and get an upgraded phone.
I work for Verizon and I've had customers come in with a Droid and manufacture sent them a Droid Three.

[Q] Currently unlockable bootloaders

For us with currently unlockable bootloaders (branded phones), will removing the sim-lock give us the option to unlock the bootloader?

Currently there is no way to root without unlocking the bootloader, it will probably come at some point, but not now .
There is no drawback to unlocking your bootloader though, as they will still probably accept your device for warranty, unless you fry your phone with overclocking and such.
But yea, branded phones cant be unlocked at this moment, or well, they haven't figured it out yet. So if you are branded you can't even unlock your bootloader...yet . Give it time, everything will be figured out in time .

I am under the impression that selling it in the Canadian Sony store means it will not be branded for any carrier, since they'll be offering the phone unlocked. Probably even if they offer it on contract with a carrier like Rogers, it would still be unlocked, but just subsidized with your contract plan.
edit: They did say that the phone is exclusively with the Sony Store in Canada, so you can't get it straight from Rogers anyways, so no worries!
If there is brand in rogers, I am pretty sure they will lock the bootloader just like they did in xperia arc

Bought mine from the sony store locked to rogers. I can confirm that the bootloader are in fact locked. Bought mine at launch early tuesday morning.(12th)
They currently only sell XpS's locked to rogers. They unfortunately don't sell the unbranded version(/unlocked). They were also surprised by this fact apparently.
BTW the rogers bloatware that came with the device is annoying as hell. If you're going to buy on frim the Sony store in canada. Debranding would be the first thing I would suggest to do. Seeing as rooting or custom roming is out of the question.

Have to admit that i'm a little disappointed i got my phone as soon as it was released on my neywork.
That was before the information came to light, that branded fw's have their bootloaders locked.
Had i known that BEFORE i took the plunge, i would have upgraded via a third party mobile phone shop.
I am even more disappointed to see custom roms and tweaks coming out, only to find myself unable to go anywhere near them. Grrrr!
I have de-branded my Xps but i still have the bloat-crap on it. Which is now filling the ten whole spaces in my main menu.
I have been checking on here everyday hoping for a root solution and also on the omnius and setool sites but still i am without a solution :-( and my biggest concern of all is...
As most the devs and rom chefs have unlocked bootloaders, that means hardly anyone (if anyone) will be working on a solution. Double :-(

I hear you bro
Don't worry, it will come
I have faith in this community that something will be figured out. A few weeks ago it wasn't even possible to flash custom kernels and such, and they managed to figure it out. Now that things are flowing nicely, the rom developers have started working on making things again, and maybe there's more things being looked into in terms of rooting.
I've been here since my X1 and the community hasn't let me down yet, I'm confident they will find a way to get a root, and probably (given the speed even a tester CM9 came out) before ICS.
I guess you might have wait for those paid software like setool .... It will be like the same case like xperia arc. Rogers or any branded phone do not allow bootloader unlock.

Yeah, I can't take the plunge and use this phone as my daily driver. Not with Timescape (or whatever you call the Sony UI). I want to be able to use AOSP apps. What I hate is when the UI elements creep over when you're using an app (stuff like checkboxes) and it just makes the overall experience feel inconsistant.
I have since buying the phone debranded it and flashed the singpore rom, and it does a good job at eliminating bloatware, but I want to go in deeper and install CM9 whenever that's ready.

If you could have done the test point process, I'm sure it would already be posted here. It's quite possible there will be some type of testpoint exploit in the future.. But as of now not the case. I wouldnt suggest messing around inside your phone unless your ready to void your warrenty and at least somewhat know what your doing.
Who knows you could be some secret dev-ninja-genius. ...but then again your asking about screwdriver sizes instead of just eyeballing it like most people would do, so I very much doubt that bro.

I know you were just trying to be mindfull of what happens to my phone and stuff, but if I "eyeballed" the size what good would it do if I don't have a small enough bit to fit the screw? I was able to remove the frearson screws but am missing the torx.
A test point method is still possible (maybe) but the reason that there are no posts about it is that the software used (Omnius, SEtools, etc) is not yet compatible with the XS.
Im toooo interested too, my phone has bootloader blocked for my phone company, so I cant get root or do anything
Im waiting, I hope too much they find a solution soon !

Just for your information, only small number of countries have law that tele operaters NEED to sim-unlock your phone. I'm not going into discussion if that is good law or not.
Next time try thinking a bit before you start accusing someone(for stealing or something else)!
Most contracts add up to the cost of the phone anyway, so it's hardly stealing, like the firms would do it if it wasn't still profitable.

Im sorry but you lost me at "sim-unlocked".
If you read the first post, the OP intentionally wanted to buy an unlockable bootloader phone. Instead, he acquired it through network providers (i assume cheaper than stores). He then complains here that it can't be unlocked. If thats what he wanted in the first place, then why doesnt he purchase one straight from the store, which is bootloader unlockable???
The reason network providers offer those phones cheap is because the client and provider enter into an exclusivity contract, which in return the client uses their services for a certain time frame. If or UNTIL that timeframe has lapsed, then technically the phone is still owned by the network. The simlocking and bootloader locking is merely just an insurance on their part.
Its like "buying" a car but paying in installment... If you chopped it up for parts before settling the amount in FULL, it is in most countries, called STEALING...because its not yours YET to begin with.
Sent from my MT11i using Tapatalk
Can't see mention of using provider for price.
I think he meant he picked this phone knowing it was unlockable, didn't think/know about network subsidy locks.

Which sbf file I need for my Atrix ?

So I need to send my Atrix back to Motorola and need to flash a .sbf file in order to relock it (running CM7 for now).
I've read tutorials so I'm not concerned about the procedure but more about which .sbf file I need. My Atrix was bought from ibood.de so it's probably coming from Belgium or The Nertherlands.

Any idea of the version that is used ?
Here's a screenshot of the box for some info : http://i.imgur.com/8j7DP.jpg

you dont need to reload original (i sent mine with just a 2.3.6 fruitcake rom)
they will lock your phone forever with new stock rom (no way to unlock it with current procedures)
hope it help[s
Do they always lock it ? Don't you think it has to do with the fact that you send it unlocked ?
Sometimes they don't permalock it, but most of the time they do. Just assume it is going to get locked.
That's super ****ty. And there's nothing that can be done to unlock it ?
I mean, I don't even think that is legal, they just can't change my product if they want it. It's mine now and I want them to fix it not to change it.
Not only do they cancel ICS but they would now stuck me with stock rom !

You can blame all the media corps and their desire to control media consumption for that. The primary reason for locked bootloaders has a lot to do with companies and groups like Netflix, the cable industry, MPAA/RIAA, etc. not being willing to allow their services if certain protectionist measures aren't put in place.
As for locking it and it being legal? They can simply give you a replacement and it be locked and claim it was cheaper to swap it than fix it. What's worse is that there is a growing debate over who owns devices once purchased and devices purchased on subsidy could be used as being considered owned by the carrier or manufacturer and only 'leased' to the customer. Now that's what I'd call pretty s****y because if they get away with that then we'd own nothing which is ideal for any company on the ownership side of the deal.
And sorry for being a little off topic but it's definitely something that will only get worse before it gets better.

There ulis nothing illegal with them permalocking the bootloader on your device.

That may be true for the US but I'm European (so is my Atrix) where Netflix and cables companies don't have any kind of power on that level (for now) + the UE tend to make laws to prevent those situations.
So can I hope that lock issue is US-only ? Did it happen to non-US users ?

I'm not really sure but I'd be willing to bet if it goes to a US facility it'll get locked regardless.
Also, looking at the type number it appears it's the UK version but don't take my word on it.

I really doubt it will cross the Atlantic...
Okay, I'll see if I can get a confirmation on that UK suggestion. Thanks for that !

Reliable root method?

Now that this phone is officially released, has anyone found a way to root it? I have the sprint version which is the ls992 and I want to root it. I saw a one click tool online but it's not in XDA so I don't think it's reliable. Thanks for any help

By the way, in case any of you were wondering, I'm coming from the LG g3 (ls990). I like the smaller screen, the fingerprint reader is very responsive, I dislike the moved volume buttons, dislike the audio jack being moved to the top although it DOES sound better, actually a good bit clearer. It feels really good in my hand but does get hotter than the LG g3. The material on the back has a good grippy feel almost, it's not particularly slick which is a good thing. I could hardly use my g3 with the stock back because of how slick it was. The cameras are PHENOMENAL. All of the picture modes provided are outstanding and not just gimmicks in my opinion.

JCase claims to have a root method already but refuses to release it... even with his rep I doubt his claims.
If the bootloader is unlockable, it should be relatively easy to do.
I also have the Sprint version. The only thing that's keeping me from getting it rooted so far is the inability to get it into Fastboot to flash a custom recovery.
I've documented my findings so far here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g5/how-to/bootloader-unlock-root-ive-t3350356

Well bad news from Tmobile - I currently have the sprint ls990 LG G3 and decided to make the move to tmobile for the G5 because I was sick of locked bootloaders. The tmobile g5 does indeed have an unlockable bootloader however, LG seems to be using a custom bootloader on the G5 that wont flash anything that isnt verified. Tmobile's G5 already has a TWRP build and noone can flash it because of dm-verity. Essentially the tmobile appears to have an unlocked bootloader but lg has changed the bootloader so that it cant flash anything. That's the current status and I should add that I have not been able to try anything for myself because my phone hasnt arrived yet. But if that is the case on T-Mobile, then it's going to be even harder on Verizon, AT&T and Sprint.
its locked but there's an unlock switch in the developers' options.
I came from lg g3 as well. Massive improvement and loving it so far.I have it thru verizon. Hoping for root soon that's all I really care about.

Not with a locked bootloader unless an exploit is found. It looks like the same uphill climb as with the SD820 S7/S7E now.
So for now no root, no development

This would be the best phone, but no root or aosp/cm just kills it. So useless. Way too many new phones that are for "noobs" only. No unlock, no root, no use. Makes me so mad at these oem's

It saves them a lot of time and money. Any noob able to root and unlock could accidentally flash the complete wrong system and recovery resulting in a pretty hard brick and if they allow rooting and unlocking then they would be kind of obligated to help them fix it. Even if they said it voided the warranty then they would still get tons of calls complaining.

That just doesn't make any sense though, if I buy a laptop, and or a desktop, and I install Linux and then it blows up, they're just going to tell me LOL sorry too bad. Same thing should go for phones. But if something unrelated to the software messes up, I would expect them to cover it no matter what, just like on my laptop, while I am not running the original OS software that came with it, they honor the warranty for the headphone jack breaking. Because that has absolutely nothing to do with it. The point is, if I buy something it is mine, I should have an absolute one-hundred-percent administrator privileges on any device that I can purchase. If not I need to get an extremely heavy discount for not truly owning the device.
But this is getting off topic, the whole point is that we really need to get the G5 rooted, because it honestly would be the best Android device out there if it was rooted.
Imagine this thing in running cm13, it will be perfect. Good camera, type c, replaceable battery so that way it doesn't have a finite life span, micro SD for super music users like myself. And upgrade modules , it's the future.

I think it mostly has to do with them not wanting the end user to be able to modify the device to get around things like paid hotspots and such. Carriers like sprint that have unlimited data but a paid by the GB hotspot plan potentially lose lots of money off of users getting it free with root. Also you probably have an ISP that rents you a cable modem. Those things are locked down and while you can buy your own - their locked down one, if modified can potentially increase speeds or bypass a meter. I think that ISPs (including cell carriers) like complete control so they can grab every penny and make it difficult to escape their grasps. Once again these are just my assumptions so I could be horribly wrong.
