[Q] Disable ongoing wifi notification? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Any way to get rid of it without root (I don't think root has been established on this device?)?

Go into the settings and click WiFi. When it brings you into the WiFi networks screen, click menu button and click advanced. You will see network notification box ticked. Just untick that. At least that's what I think you are asking.

I don't see this on the VZW version :/

What I do is I long click on it, select App Info and force close it. Its a temporary fix. It comes back eventually

This is another thing you can thank Verizon for. From what I have seen this is also an issue on the DNA as well. Its there way of trying to keep you on Wifi and off 3G/4G. Currently the only work around I have seen involve root. Until we have working root just have to deal with it,

Isn't that bad business? Verizon is a cellular business, shouldn't they promote what they're selling? Isn't it the same as a car company promoting the sales of their cars but telling you to not drive them often?

They make the same amount whether you use 1% of your data limit per month or 99% of your data limit per month. So if they can offload your traffic to a WiFi network to keep their's less congested then its a win/win for them. They still get paid and they have less traffic.

This was my thought as well, but then Verizon goes and introduces the DNA which has 16GB of memory with no expandable memory, which leads up to believe they want us to use their network for streaming instead, which would most likely force users to get a higher tiered share everything data plan.
Verizon can't make up their mind!

yah but when 95% of the phones released today have SD slots including the note, s3 and lesser devices like stellar what's verizon really got to gain from telling HTC no slot.
IMO it's more likely HTC took it out to reduce costs to keep the quad core/5 inch device at the $199 price tag to try and one up the note 2.

I don't think this is correct, the cost of adding a micro SD slot at their production level has to be negligible. Anyone know price from a breakdown of a similar phone?
don't underestimate Verizon's power when it comes to handicapping the Note2. If it doesn't have Droid branding they don't get any licensing fee.

Bump. Man, the WiFi notice on VZW is the most annoying thing. Anyone found a method yet to kill it?
Killing the app is very temporary.
SQLite doesn't work after a simple power down, which I do often.

This sucks!
I've rooted and circumvented Sprints Hotspots service for a year now.
Not sure if that's the way to go for me anymore.
This Verizon news really makes me appreciate Sprint's unlimited data scheme now.
But..they are cracking down on data abusers now...tracking big users and even sites visited indicating hacked tethering use and roaming totals...dropping people with excessive data use.
Concerned they'll end up saying screw it and implement data caps.
I value unlimited Sprint plans enough that, out of principle I'm considering just forking over the monthly $...perhaps getting on a favored list lol!

I guess the issue is whether you use the tethering abusively or not... I use it to provide wifi to my tablet on the road (it is used in lieu of the phone) and in the car when my kids are in the back with their notebook (once in a while). Overall my usage is consistent with a my phone usage as ...
As far as limiting it the bandwidth, they already are doing it by reducing your connection speed. Less Speed = less debit = less sharing!

It's going to happen cause people are greedy and are gonna continue to do it whether we like it or not. Sprint will eventually make us pay for the tiered data plans, its going to happen. I hate thinking bad ****, but this is one of those things that I really think is inevitable.

I won't say it'll never happen.. But, the unlimited data is one of the few perks that brings in/keeps customers for Sprint. I haven't been treated badly by Sprint, but I've got no reason to remain loyal for loyalty's sake.
I doubt they will. Over time most data will become wireless anyway. Once all is on 4G or LTE, it won't matter the bandwidth as much. Sprint already charges more for premium data anyway. Not to mention their voice coverage sucks and the unlimited plan is what helps them keep customers. I would switch to Verizon as soon as Sprint says the unlimited plan is changing.

100% agree on all fronts.
Their CS is fantastic, bar none...but without truly unlimited data I no longer give a **** about that. If I have to pick between the big 3.....AT&T would have the fastest 3G and most pervasive 4G...Verizon would have the best "all around" pricing and fastest 4G and Sprint would have....what? The worst coverage AND crappy plans but pleasant customer service? No thanks. I'll take verizon.
...I hate AT&T with a passion. I have them for home internet service. I have never in my life been treated so poorly by a service I pay for....paying a bill over the phone or online is a gigantic pain in the ass...and I have never ever had a service shut off for paying a service IN FULL, EARLY until I had the modern-day incarnation of AT&T....and I am far from alone on that.
This is Sprint's ace in the hole...well, that and Google recently buddying up with them....but...lacking unlimited data they have no compelling reason to stick around.

As far as data usage, not really. However, it increases the potential for additional/more data usage as you might not of loaded it on your phone if that was the only option.
Personally, any reasonable usage is fine. Big difference between checking email on a tethered laptop.. and torrenting.

This pretty much describes my tethering usage, except the kids part.
I like the leaked plans from AT&T for their LTE pricing. This is based off of what Lulsec stole today, but apparently AT&T is going to go with speed tiers when their LTE is released instead of bandwidth caps, you just pay for how fast you want your internet. To me that makes more sense.

Yeah, umm, unless that torrent download is an absolute emergency (and I actually have been in that situation before...on the road at a trade show....needed a kinda huge file I had hosted at home....) you are just torrenting tethered off your phone to show off...even 4G sucks relative to even a basic cable-modem connection.....
I think the people who use 10+gb a month tethering illegally should take a step back and think about what they're doing. Just pay the price every month to tether the right way. Because once you guys really piss Sprint off, that 20gb you use every month is going to cost a fortune thanks to the tiered data policy they will enact. Then you'll be paying MORE than you would have if you had paid for the tethering.

[Q] Data Throttle Removal?

I've noticed my data speeds getting slower over the past few days. I thought it might have been the new Atrix Rom I am running. However, I just read an article from Droid Life and it seems Verizon is now trying to throttle the data usage.
Does anyone know if we have any way to remove the data throttle from the Droid X2?
Thanks
Data Throttling is typically done on the carrier-side of things, meaning that modifying the phone itself won't accomplish anything.
It's similar to how they filter out certain apps from the Android Market; there's no way for us to get around them doing so, because the data is filtered before it ever reaches the phone. The best we can do is use a different source(i.e, Wifi) to access it.
The same principle applies to throttling.

They might give you a option to get off the contract if you are being throttled, but remember if you do so you would never be able to go back and get the unlimited data package. When i worked for clear(4G wireless company) we had a process called N.I.M.S (network integrity management system) which means a stupid computer that was programmed with different levels and data usage values and if you went above these values guess what you just got on the N.I.M.S list and when you get on it once you never get off, sad i know but its true. I recently got fired from there because the closed all the US call centers and the moved the operations to the Philippines, damn US government to allow moving jobs over sea's :'(
Forgot something, the policy at clear was that if you were on the N.I.M.S list you were able to get out of your contact with no early term fee's. But you worry not allow any kind of refund for the most recent bill cycle and i mean NONE even if you paid the bill less than a week ago, you would get denied of a refund.

I seriously doubt it's 5% of anything, I think Verizon throttles all of it's customers on the fly when the system sees a heavy data usage beyond a certain amount of time (Example, streaming) regardless of data plan.
I have unlimited data, this month I have only used 267MB of data on their network, streamed some ESPN the other night, and what do you know... throttled.
Verizon is a bunch of liars and cheats... that said, I do my share also. Thanks Verizon.

How can u tell when u r throttled?
And I remember seeing a file called throttle or similar when going through root explorer one day. I forget where but I will look again tomorrow ...man I should be sleeping right now
I swear if I been getting throttled and I have only been a customers for few months I will snap on some reps lol
you can take this as you want,
belive me or not, but i went to a verizon store to get replacement droid x2, and me and this tech got talking, he had his phone rooted with custom roms and the whole lot, and knew alot about rooting, he told me they throttle you on the phone aka software, if you run custom com and are rooted, you wont get the throttle problem.
I was going to buy full price for the droid bionic, but he told me that verizon will get the Samsung galaxy S II phone, i dont think it will happen but he knew what he was talking about.
but overall take it how you want it.
but when i was running Eclipse 5 i hit on download speed 1.7mbps/800kps upload, the lowest i hit was 1.2mbps/500kps upload.
This is probably my lowest month ever, but I use my car dock to play Google Music in my car and I stream it. This month in 26 days I have only used 1.16GB of Data and on the outside of town I am getting 1.6mbps down 253kbps up on Eclipse Rom.
Okay I found where I saw throttle before in root explorer
/data/system> there is a folder named throttle with two script type files in it.
Anyone else have this? Know what it is?
I had thought it may be something to do with our cpu but I have np idea lol

As much as this doesn't affect most of us, all it's going to do is make people cancel their hotspot and gravitate towards the free tethering you can get when you root. But, in all reality, most people who pay for and use the hotspot rarely go over 5 gigs a month anyways.
yea, i guess I should not have added the hotspot, just used rooted wireless tethering. Guess sprint showed me not to try and do things there way.

The Mobile Hotspot/ Air Card limit was a bad move, I can understand the phone tethering limit to 5GB.
This move gives Verizon the all clear on flagging their Mobile Hotspots as the better & cheaper alternative, why by a limited 4G WiMax hotspot when you can buy a faster & $10 cheaper monthly ($50 for 5GB) LTE hotspot from Verizon?
It would be better if they grandfathered current users before the limit because now the ETF free door has been swung open, loosing more contract subscribers valued at an est. $1700 x number of mobile hotspot users, over a 2 year contract.
SMH
But no one thought to bring that possible backlash up at an investor meeting. Where I assume this deal went down.

WiFi tether on temp rooted Rezound..... automatically billed?

I figured that the WiFi tether root app should work fine with temp root, what I don't know is if Verizon can tell if we use it and thus, bill us for hotspot use? I remember that there was some concern with the Incredible that Verizon had somehow set it up where there could detect this, just wondering if anyone knows for sure if its safe on the Rez?

I have saw plenty of customers coming in to my location being billed or shut off until they remove the program. Why risk it? Right now they are being nice, you are stealing. Pay the $30, get unlimited hotspot, and don't worry about it. Back to the old saying, if you gotta ask, you shouldn't do it.
Been doing it on my Droid incredible for a long time. Doing it right now from my boys nook color at wrestling practice. Never been charged, or shut off. Don't feel like I am stealing, but others will. If they catch me, there is always other carriers. Both Are HD Screens, One Is 4.3in And The Other Is 11.6in.
HDMI Out On Both.
Both Use USB Connections.
Both Have Headphones Jack.
Both Have Wi-Fi Antennas.
Netbook Can Use Skype Or Google Voice For Calling If I Wanted To. (Also Could Buy A 3G Wireless Card Instead Of Just Using Wi-Fi)
Both Are Charged By Plugging A Cable In.
Both Have Okay Battery Life.
Both Run Linux OS.
Google put the feature in froyo, and the carriers blocked it to make money. It's not stealing. At all. I know they have a tether guard apk on the thunderbolt. Havnt looked for it yet, and I don't know what it does

Yeah locking the bootloaders on phones has been questioned legally multiple times. It's like the carriers are trying to control your smartphone experience.

For most people that is a good thing. I am sure it helps mobile device security for the general population. If a webpage could execute a root method and then wipe your system partition, that would be terrible for the average user, so it gets nand-locked.

It's the "smart" check for the 4g hotspot. Hotspot won't work as long as that apk is disabled or missing.
Are they able to read it on the resound though? That hasn't been answered here. Do they know we are tethering on temp root?
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
I froze the TetheringGuard.apk. I haven't even tried to use the WiFi tether app yet.
I don't think they can tell if you are tethering with root unless they are looking really closely.
I'm on the fence about hotspot. I think for occasional use (tablets), I'm ok with not paying for it, but if you are trying to use it as your home internet service, you should pay for it. Wireless broadband is not unlimited.
on my Inc I used it very rarely. I don't have a tablet and my laptop never leaves the house where I have cable WiFi. My data usage on Verizon averages 2-3 GB a month. I haven't tethered since getting the rez the day they came out. I use it on my work laptop once in a blue moon because they are Nazis and block EVERYTHING on their network.

If someone charges for something, and you find a way around being charged for it and use it free, how is that not stealing? Not worth the debate, all of you that don't see it will not see it. You probably think getting music from p2p is also not stealing, until you get caught and thrown in prison.

I see where you are coming from, but I don't think you quite understand what is going on behind the scenes. It seems like the carriers are trying to see how much they can get away with, and letting them do so is the worst thing for consumers. We aren't getting something for free, we have already paid for it; the carrier is trying to charge you for the same thing twice. It is like buying tickets to a game or concert, then being told you have to pay an extra fee if you want to use your own binoculars. Or buying a nice meal but being given a plastic spork to eat it with, and being charged more if you want to use your own fork and knife.

I have unlimited data from bring grandfatherrd in. unlimited means unlimited no matter how u look at it. and if they say otherwise then they better change the wording around.

what if your home cable or DSL broadband said that you could only use desktop computers with a physical connection, but charged you an extra $30 if you wanted to use a laptop over wifi? Its the same thing.. you are already paying for a certain allotment of data... Verizon has no right (in my opinion) to tell you on what devices you can use that data that you've paid for.

I agree and don't agree. Mobile data should be that, for mobile devices. My problem is with those that use it to run their home networks.
I'm curious to see how verizon structures the shared data next year. Unless its unlimited or some ungodly amount (100gb), I'll keep my current plans.

+1 On mobile data being for mobile devices.
I can see using wireless teether when you have other devices needing internet in a pinch.
On my HTC Incredible, I used wireless teether on very few occassions. Sometime we lost power here alot within the last year, and I turned on teether so the fiance could use her laptop to get work done (she work alot as a social worker).
Other times I have used teether while on the road and she needed to use the laptop on our 2 1/2 hour trips up north.
People that use teether to be their sole internet for all their pc's at home, to the point of dropping their actual broadband provider, I do not agree with.
A guy I work with uses the teether to provide internet now to 4 computersand 2 xbox360s in his house. Yikes.
This is my opinion only, I don't speak for others, and I don't hate. I'm aware when verizon now offers 4g unlimited hotspot, that people will say well it's unlimited and I will do with it what I want. I truly don't believe it is meant to replace Uverse, Comcast, etc, since that is what Verizon Fios is for.
I can only imagine the big stink that would happen if Verizon changed the small print for the 4g Unlimited Hotspot to say "Only to be used to supply internet for other mobile device ie laptops, tablets, etc and it is not meant to replace your actual Broadband Provider."

Verizon warranty replaced my DNA

Just thought I should share my thoughts regarding my latest warranty exchange....my WiFi was having issues on stock Rom unrooted so I called Verizon and see what they could offer.
Battery pull and network refresh(really? I didn't know WiFi was part of the Verizon network but OK)
Factory reset(I though alright atleast were in the right area....)
Finally she proceeded to order me a replacement while telling me that Verizon doesn't tolerate abuse of the network or altering of devices, I asked why do you believe its altered and where is this abuse of your network? she replies, you use an extreme amount of data that is not likely to be consumed soley on the phone.
I couldn't stop laughing, I HONESTLY asked her if she got that from an episode of CSI? I then told her my unlimited plan doesn't include a clause for intruding questions about assumptions on how I use my phone. She quickly backed off and gave me a tracking number for the shipping.
I just was truly caught off guard after the years of having my plan and NEVER being questioned like this LOL....just my interaction and wanted to pass it along
Out of curiosity how much data was it? If you'd happen to know ?

That's what I'm saying.
When I called Verizon the week of the DNA launch, I asked the local store if they would have any devices in on that day. The rep asked me if I was upgrading my line and if I was he tried to sell me the SG3. I told him I was not upgrading, I didn't want that pos, and am planning to buy the DNA at retail price. His statement I clearly remember "Why on earth would you pay $600 for THAT phone when clearly you are eligible and able to get a better phone for $99" ... I said nicely that I would like to keep my unlimited data plan. Then he asked me, how much data do I use on a monthly basis ... I replied, usually 30-40GB+ depending. He said "depending?!! that much data should not be allowed, how can one person abuse Verizon..." I just interrupted him loudly saying ...I have UNLIMITED, UNLIMITED means there is no LIMIT! and hung up.
Since then, I blow my data out the water. Hit over 100GB last month myself and plan to do it continually

I just think it's funny that people try to say the unlimited plans were taken away "because of people like you". The reality is that Verizon got rid of unlimited plans because they want to make more money. It has very little to do with the few people here and there who "abuse" their unlimited data.
I personally have unlimited and use as little as 2GB or as much as 10GB on any given month...

Netflix, Downloading ROMs, DropBox (Auto-Upload:I take a lot of pictures and videos) YouTube, Google Music (have no problem streaming 2GB a day worth of music)
So I'm not really "abusing" I'm just taking advantage of my unlimited data, especially since the DNA only has a set amount of storage.
Now me downloading the Windows 7/SP1 ISO files from Microsoft every day would be "abusing" yet still legit
and it is all about Verizon wanting more money... They charging you for data usage and selling you phones without sdcards, forcing you to use their data to use your cloud storage
I think Verizon is "abusing" us!

I agree, Work got me on trips all the time. When at hotels, WiFi costs extra. My phone is the alternative... That uses majority me data there.
I went the route of adding an extra line to get my DNA, came out cheaper that retail!
$199 - for phone with contract
$240 - $10/month for the extra line (2yrs)
$30 - they activate data on the line, switch your two phones then cut the data off the secondary line
I got my DNA for a little over $480 with a pack of 5 free screen protectors lol
My experience with Verizon's customer service has been horrible. If Sprint had the coverage of Verizon, I would still be with them. They finally made things right with me when I was able to do an early upgrade to get my Droid DNA. I was ready to jump back to Sprint lol

Well this month it was roughly 132gb as I recall, I've gotten as high as 200gb before. Bottom line is I pay for unlimited and have had this plan going on six years so lets see 12x6=72x30=2160. That's 2,160 reasons why I don't need to explain myself about how or why I use my phone

I hope you all know eventually they are going to remove the unlimited data plan from everyone. Even when I had unlimited my 3g speeds were so slow on my old phone I never used it, I never even hit 1gb and I still haven't. The most I have ever used was 500mb. But I guess you guys can do as you please since you have unlimited. They can't stop you until they take it away...

Sad thing is I watched a sales rep convice a friend to switch and she got an iPad thinking there's no way I can use all that data they are offering.....sadly she called me the next day saying Verizon ****ed me now......now she's right around same price monthly and is limited

^ interesting. I'm new to Verizon and the phone so I have a limited plan but a co worker of mine long time Verizon person has the unlimited plan he says they tried with him also to change the plan he refused. That's some pretty high usuage you use hehe. I can def see how it can be pretty high I don't use my carrier internet to much but just from streaming music and uploading pictures alone gets me a lot of usage.

Out of curiosity, what are you doing to use that much data? The highest I've gone was like 10 gigs. I don't think I could go any higher if I tried.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm about to get my Droid RAZR replaced to a DNA through warranty and the rep told me I had to pay for the battery and battery cover... I was under the impression that the battery was non-removable. I even have another thread asking this very question and the answer I got was that it was not removable.

Would you be kind enough to explain to someone (a noob) who isn't knowledgeable enough as to understand how a user could use 200 gb a month?
Could someone use 2000gb......8000gb....or a lot more then that a month?
Please tell me how that would be possible even given exaggerated use. I am new to this, and really don't know.
Thanks,
Dan
