These phones both have great cameras in daylight. There doesn't seem to be enough of a difference to be a reason for wanting one over the other. I had read in reviews that the Note 2 performed better in low lighting, but never found comparison shots. Well, my brother-in-law and I just took some for anyone who may wonder. These were taken at the same time, so the lighting was the same. We also had all our settings at auto, besides the flash being off. The Penguin has a 100 watt equivalent cool white bulb in it so it was very bright, the polar bear is very dim.
The Note 2 definitely handled the bright penguin better. The DNA won in the last picture in color of the light, etc. In the polar bear picture, if you combined the fence coloring of both images, you'd get what I see with my eyes.

The left most picture looks better on the Note to me while the right most looks better with the DNA IMO. Hard to tell which is better without comparing it to the reality I guess.

Are you looking at the same pictures we are? The DNA images look better than my Note 2, along with my personal experience also. I have both phones, but I think the DNA wins hands down from what was posted.

I don't know about that. With bright lights that are directed toward the camera, the Note 2 does a better job. The penguin looks much better with the Note 2. Maybe we'll do a shot or two with car headlights on tomorrow.
This was taken at the zoo at night. It's light projected onto a rock wall. Was completely dark outside. I was the only person to get it with my phone easily. Everyone one else out there was struggling or using dslr camera

I agree that the last pic DNA dealt with the light better.
I had both....gn2 was much better indoors, but the DNA was much better outdoors.

I have had both in the past month and can say that camera is one if the reasons I returned DNA. It was good bit not equal. IMO as I take a huge amount of pics if my 2 lil girls. Everything is subjective and settings are a huge variable but both are amazing devices. Other reasons - expandable memory and exchangable battery - were the deal breakers but I did feel slighted by DNA cam. That being said... both were heavy hitters

The last pictures look relatively equal to me, though the Note 2 could have been affected by the light coming in from the left side a little bit, which isn't visible in the DNA pic. From the looks of it, the Note 2 does better in low light with a single bright source, but in very low lighting, the DNA is better. In reality, I wouldn't use any smartphone to take dark or low-light shots, and would even avoid it if possible on a standard point and shoot.

I personally find that if i'm shooting pics in my garden, that the grass looks luminous green, and over-saturated.
Now, not starting a war here - i sold my 4S to get an S3, but i do find the S3 images a fair bit less realistic than my old iPhone

If you are looking the images on your phone, it's because of the Super AMOLED screen...
It tends to oversaturate colors, thats normal.
But I know that the camera also oversaturate colors a little bit, nothing big, but it does.

there are a tweaks already available for download that enhances the audio and video bitrate as well as added physical buttons for still images...have a search around.
Just change the many camera settings already available on the handset before shooting...

i agree that the super AMOLED screen makes the image look over saturated. Looks great on the phone screen but poor once you open the file on a computer. I like to experiment with different settings and then touch up the images in post. just keep in mind that lighting is on your side, you just have to know how to manage the amount of light taken in by the camera
I'm still testing out the features and hope to get a good setting but honestly i find that my photos using my old HTC Sensation were better quality.
Also, i have edited the media_profiles.xml file and increased the bitrate, that is my tweak. anything else would be on the user.
First off anyone claiming iphone 4s photos are more realistic than photos on s3 is telling a few porkies especially if they use Hdr on 4s as that makes iphone pics look as unreal as it gets. Secondly the photos on s3 blow the 4s away regardless of the mythical over saturation of colours.
Take any pics on s3 and ip4s side by side on auto in a variety of situations and I guarantee the iphone pics will be sub standard 99 percent of the time, colour balance or no.
Sgs3 takes as good photos as my cannon powershot 14mp easily.

Really you think the Sensation took better pictures?
I have a HTC Sensation and the picture quality from this phone is shocking in all but the best daylight conditions, and even then it's no match for the S3 or the S2 for that matter, as for video quality on the Sensation not even gonna go there lol

Hi guy's,... I thought the camera was good until i view it on my computer...it's kinda granny with lots of noise... it looks good in the 1080p display but not on FB or in my computer rofl. I guess something is really wrong with the camera.

Welcome to mobile cameras, they all throw pixel count at you when what they really need are better sensors. I have NEVER had a phone camera take pictures that didn't have tons of noise and look like complete **** on a decent monitor. In my experience thus far, this camera is no different than others I've seen.

Have been playing with the camera all day today. Compared to iphone5 this shows lot of noise especially in low light. When cmpared to gs3, noise is marginally higher in low light photos. Under good light conditions, this seems to produce most faithful color reproduction.
Just my observation
Yea, I just compared gsiii and DNA cameras, I think gsiii is better most of the time, but not in color reproduction. But honestly, they are both awful. :thumbdown:

I just downloaded camera 360 from the market, and its so much better than the stock camera.
I went downtown Detroit last night after Dinner, and even though I said that the S3 Camera is better, I'll retract my statement (different thread) after taking some low lights pics. The Low Light Pics on my S3 looked horrible.....but was pleasantly surprised by this camera. I attached a few pictures to show that the pics in low light actually look pretty damn good, especially since it was taken with a Phone, and I was a bit tipsy after drinking too much at Dinner (hands weren't exactly steady).

Damn... I was going to pick up that phone today but after seeing these pics I don't think I am. A good camera is very important to me, maybe I'll get the Lumia 920 instead...
Well, what do you expect from a phone's camera? Whatever the camera's hardware is, if 90% of its settings are controlled automatically, the result is most probably going to suck. In a darker scene, this phone's software may want to bump the ISO higher than another phone's software, hence this noise and lack of detail. But anyway, a different camera app and you knowing how to use it will most probably show better results.
For me, a cellphone's camera is not much more than a barcode scanner.
Exactly. Phone cameras will always suck compared to a quality Point&Shoot. Smaller sensor, few manual settings, and software made by phone manufacturers, not Canon/Nikon. It's fine for a decent landscape shot or portrait on a sunny day but some people just have ridiculous expectations.
People spend thousands of dollars on camera equipment that works well in low light or for fast action. Maybe the iPhone 5 is marginally better than this, but I've played with my family's new iPhones and IMO the camera is still just a phone camera. If I wanted to take a good picture I'd bring something else.

Some people didn't like my review of the DNA saying that I was too harsh on the 1080p 440ppi display. How could it possibly be worse than the 720p S3 panel? Well, I think these will speak for themselves:
First a short video shot by an iPhone 4S...DNA vs S3 playing Underworld Awakening. It's a bit hard to show how much the S3 dominates because it's a video of video playback, but the most accurate part is when Selene and Michael are kissing. You can see the skin tone is MUCH better:

Don't forget-I was NOT really holding the camera steady (Tipsy), but my spouse had my S3 and the DNA's pics actually look better in those low-light shots than on the S3. I need to go to the Conservatory and take some daylight shots of all the tropical plants. THAT'S where I usually take my dSLR and even when I took the S3 there, the pics came out great,popping colors, etc.... Let's see how the DNA can handle those.

I just downloaded the Camera 360 Ultimate from the Play Store and the difference is very, VERY noticeable. EVERY DNA owner needs to switch immediately. It's COMPLETELY a software issue. I'll be testing other camera apps right now, but this was a drastic improvement!!!

On my monitor those pictures look absolutely horrible, grainy and pixely. Are you using a stock camera or a 3rd party one?

Well no camera will ever be like buying a nikon but getting normal point&shoot quality pics isn't much to ask for, nokias are able to achieve it, seems to be just a part of the phone being skimped on. Nothing to stop me frfom buyin though, they are "good enough"

Dude, something is definitely wrong with your lens. Half those pictures look flat out BLURRY. There are a bevy of example shots from the DNA, just google some and take a look. I'd upload some of my own if it werent for the fact they're already out there. Those pictures you took look like something my 2001 blackberry pearl took.
I planned to wait for the release of the GS4 active, because the original GS4 proved to be very fragile. I do not want to be forced to use a bulky case and the GS4 failed multiple drop tests when compared to the iPhone 5 and its predecessor, the Galaxy S3. According to the rumor mill, the GS4 active will be a inferior to the original GS4. With rumors floating around that it will only have a dual core processor and an 8 megapixel camera, I am not inclined to buy this phone. What are your thoughts? Do you believe that these rumors hold any truth?
Its not rumor. There has been a video posted of the phone. Those specs are true.

This is my way of thinking. The video leaked shows a dual-core, which is sad. I'd gladly buy the phone if it was basically an S4 with better bodywork.
Heck, I'd even buy it if it were waterproof =P
It's a shame, I was looking forward to this. Guess I'll just end up with a standard S4 and an Otterbox.

I may be bashed for saying this but i don't understand why one would buy a high tech phone and then wanting it full protection. If if you buy this phone you should take care of it (I understand a drop may happen to anybody) but still...is like buying a ferrari and wanting to put rugged tires and take it to a rally race

People use their phones every day. Often times people need/want to use their phone in the rain, or perhaps it drops in the puddle, there's a hundred reasons why having a water resistant phone is a good thing for most people.
Saw the official announcement from Samsung on the S4 active. Specs look comparable to the S4 except for the camera. Im hoping the Active will be on Vz by July.

I've read they increased S4 to 13mp without increasing sensors size.
You've all seen the threads on blurry pics at night, right? One reason why? 13 megapixels, same optics.
More megapixels needs more light. Same light, lower brightness for each pixel. Plus that's a huge file and I doubt the sharpness will really increase with extra megapixels on a phone camera.
I'd rather Samsung use its experience with cameras and optics to provide a REAL increase in image quality via bigger/better sensor, optical image stabilization, etc. Although I just read HDR video came to S4 which is pretty darn cool. And there will be S4 Zoom with an actual zoom lens, also darn cool. That's what I'm talking about. One other thing I wish all phones had was a friggin' lens cover for the camera. Just a little thing that would slide over, maybe not even mechanical, just a little door users could close over it or something. Or at the least I wish case manufacturers would include this, something that slid or buttoned over it. Now I have to use tape.
Anyway, bottom line -- I think the Active camera will be BETTER especially at night..
All specs are actually better. It has an LCD screen which will be much better for a lot of reasons. MUCH brighter, accurate color, no pentile, etc. Work under water, as well as the camera working under water, in the rain, etc. And my fav-- hard buttons.
I'm going to start a thread on Verizon forums on this and try to get in touch with their corporate people to see if I can convince them to bring the S4 Active to Verizon. If they come out with it, i'll buy it off contract in a second!!!!

Megapixel count has nothing to do with how much light they need. It's the sensor that determines how much light is needed. The reason some higher megapixel cameras look worse at night is with the ISO boost you get more grain that is more dispersed across the greater pixel count.
The most important factor in low light performance is sensor size.
And yes, sharpness will absolutely increase with 13mp vs. 8. You have 50% more detail. Keep in mind this really only matters if you are blowing up images on PRINT (it own't make a difference on a 1080p TV since a 2MP image produces a 1920x1080 image, appx.) or if you happen to have a 4k TV
Anyway, bottom line -- I think the Active camera will be BETTER especially at night..

I think it looks like a great phone. I don't know if it's more rugger in terms of drop capabilities - but the waterproof is very cool. I am an avid skier and would love a waterproof phone. Even to use a phone in the rain without worrying about it is nice.

While you're right in most of what you've said, the way you explained it would make the average user think in blanket terms. Higher megapixel count *does*, in fact, require more light to achieve the same results (in terms of stops of light). The larger the sensor, the less light needed to perfectly meter the shot...but with the same size sensor, the higher megapixel sensor will require more light. That part was not incorrect.
In terms of the actual sensor in the Active, nobody knows what it is. You can't say "it's the sensor from the S3", because not even the review sites have any idea at this point. All that we know is that the Active will have an 8MP sensor...assuming that the sensor is the same size as the one in the S4 (there's no reason not to), it potentially could take better shots. Again, that assumes they won't just switch to a smaller 8MP sensor...but if they don't then this thing could be a great camera for low-light shots, since it'll have wonderful sensor pixel density.
I agree with you on the screen. All other factors aside, I'd rather have an LCD than AMOLED. Being able to see the screen during the daytime on an AMOLED is borderline impossible. Yes, the blacks are a little brighter and the contrast is minutely lower...but AMOLED also has its own share of negatives -- the primary being that the saturation is blown through the roof on most of them, completely destroying color balance and realism in pictures.
To the last point...the biggest thing about this phone is that you just don't have to worry about it as much. While most phones today could be used in the rain without issue (seriously...devices today are made to be pretty resilient on their own), this thing could be used in a downpour. It's less important for when you're actually talking on it and more so when it might be in your pocket and it's being covered in water. With a waterproof device, getting caught in a rainstorm isn't as big a deal because the phone won't have a problem with it. That's *HUGE*.
As long as the screen doesn't look like the one on the xperia z from the waterproofing...

I'd say they split the daytime shots. some better on the G2 and vis versa. But let's be honest. The camera is fantastic on the G2. That combined with everything else makes it a no-brainer. Just wish it was waterproof like the Z1 :laugh:

I have to take example pics like those with a grain of salt. Most of my pics are indoors and I always take more than one shot because the settings seem to change a bit with almost every shot. There is always one that looks better than another. But overall it does seem like the G2 (by way of image stabilization) can take better low light pics when used as a point and click.
My S4 has a Auto Detect Night Mode that works pretty good and I would probably use it for some of those shots. I wonder how the comparison would have looked if it was used.

The OIS on Android phones are pathetic (HTC One, LG G2, Note 3) because they try to do the bare minimum and keep the size small. Sony is even worse. They don't have OIS at all, to keep that 8.5mm body flat with no camera bulge. OIS is only as good as the size. The bigger the springs and ball bearings, the better the OIS. That's why the Lumia 920/925/1020 have such smooth OIS and great night shots. The HTC One also has great night shots because of its gigantic pixels, but the resolution and OIS sucks. If only there was an 8MP version of the HTC Ultrapixel camera with Nokia's OIS. That would be the best low-light shooter around.

Nothing. Considering my last 2 devices have been the orginal Incredible and the Gnex, I'm beyond due for some friggen battery life. Cam, display and SD800 are just a bonus. This will be my first ever LG, looking forward to trying something different.
it looks Brutal in low light... the poicture comes out gold lol.... the A880 was much better with acuracy in low light.... left is lg g2 and right is the A880
Im thinking of using the new easy pay program to get a note 3 but other than the extra gig of ram i dont see much of a spec bump. Is it worth it??

At first, I didn't think so either. Then I played with one, held it, saw the screen... I read the specs again...
Full disclosure: I upgrade a new device once a year, usually at full price. Because I can, and it's my "hobby" that I allow myself a good expenditure on. (and being a father means that I don't get many of those.)
The cpu/gpu is a fantastic combo, slick as deer snot on a doorknob. This thing never stutters on anything. The extra gig of ram really is a contributing factor here.
I still own my Note2, and just for fun I compare screens. World of difference. No joke.
In all, there are a bunch of small things, changes that make this an overall superior device. Everything from the specs to the design to the pen to sensors...
That being said, the Note2 is an awesome device, will be functional for quite some time, it is/was a powerhouse.
And the dev section over at the note2 forum is Filled with awesome. We're (at this point) a smaller community, but several respected and proven devs.
If the cost is a real life concern, hold off. You don't "need" the Note3. But believe me, you want it.

I had the n3 and s4 previously. N3 has bigger 1080p screen, more ram, more internal memory(32gb), faster processor...it is worth it IMO.
I upgraded from the note 2 to the note 3, it's everything to note 2 should have been. Plainly put, it's just better. Any of the tiny bit of lag you had a note 2 is non existant on the note 3. If you're in the market for one, don't hold back. Then, by the time the note 4 comes out, you can get one for a subsidized price.

I upgraded from note 2 to note 3 (put the note 2 on my boost account gave my pop y boost s3)
the reasons I upgraded
More internal memory. faster 1080p panel! larger screen. improved pen
and the big one for me. 4k video record.
besides the 4k video record I consider the camera to be a downgrade and its very annoying. pictures don't "seem" as clear on close inspection (nicely lit pictures are fine) poorer low light performance and the big one for me. lower dynamic range which is a real problem in high contrast lighting situations (such as backlit by the sun etc..)
not enough to make me hate it but enough to miss my Note 2. (I take a LOT of pictures when both)
not enough to make me regret the upgrade. its overall much better in every other way. good upgrade.

Have you guys dug around in the settings menu? I know a little about photography (I use my DSLR for anything serious), but if you select some of the picture profiles and turn off digital image stabilization, have a look at the EXIF info. The low light shots can be slightly improved, and the aggressive noise adjustments the jpg engine uses can be tamed to some extent. It's a very good sensor, let down by some ham-fisted software after it comes off the sensor. It's not ideal, but it can be remedied to some extent.
The two scenarios that the software likes to aggressively tackle are low light and strong lighting contrasts. Samsung could fix this, and I'm surprised they haven't, as some of their digital cameras produce very good jpg and raw files.

The note 3 also has a newer CPU and GPU than the note 2, and the note 3's clock speed is up to 2.23ghz. The note 2 is at 1.7ghz I think. Plus the larger screen, better S Pen, newest hardware, high clock speeds, and I read that the note 3 scored 16,000 points higher in Antuntu (I think that's how it's spelled) than the HTC One Max. It's pure awesomeness, lol...
