[Q] DNA, Note 2, or secret third option? - HTC Droid DNA

Hi all,
I'm currently on a Galaxy Nexus and due for an upgrade on Verizon. I'm reading through the threads comparing the DNA and the Note 2, and I haven't yet made up my mind which I'd prefer. But I'm noticing the trend toward bigger phones, and I totally get it -- a bigger, high resolution display is a nicer experience for anything visual. And I can't help but wonder: Even with a Note 2, will I wish the display was bigger? Might I be better off with a small 4g phone that lives in my pocket and a Nexus 7 to tether to it? The price difference between a Razr M and a Note 2 would more than pay for a Nexus 7, so it's not a completely unreasonable comparison.
I'd value the thoughts of experienced smartphone users on this matter, particularly if you've used several of the devices I've mentioned above.

I can't imagine anything bigger than the N2 being used as a primary phone. You get used to the N2's size, and it actually seems smaller the more you use it, but you still can't do a lot of things one-handed. What you said about extra screen real estate is true; it makes everything you do better. Consuming content, texting and e-mailing, web browsing, and navigating menus and making selections. But it's big and heavier than traditional high-end phones. I have a 3G 10.1" tablet and when a had a One X I used the tablet 90% of the time for anything content related because of the size difference between their displays. With the N2 it's about 35/65%. 7" or 10.1" is still better for content than 5.5". A two-device solution could be a DNA or 4.7/4.8" phone and a 7" or 10" tablet. I can't imagine replacing a tablet with the N2 even though it's better at a lot of things than a phone with a more traditional display size.

Oh, here we go again...

What kind of things can you do one-handed on Note 2?

what i don't get is why there's so many note 2 proponents in the DNA section...

this thread is as useless as my nipples
because. there aren't already like 3 of these threads already

When I first ordered the DNA, I had plans to use it as "my tablet" but since getting it on Monday I absolutely love it, coming from a 4' screen, I was a bit scared of the overwhelming 5' screen. but I plan to keep the inc4 as my music player, DNA as daily, and getting the Nexus 7 for tablet for xmas.
I suggest trying the phone out you will love it!
The build quality is like none other, there's a few kinks with the custom recoveries, but i'll get sorted out soon.
S-OFF is also in the works, this phone is a powerhouse!

Quite a bit if you set it up right. If you put all the apps you use most in the lower 1/3 of a home screen you can reach them all pretty easily if you have decent size hands. So I can open and select e-mails to read, same thing for MMS and contacts. I can also open and read my calendar. You can't dial a number or reply to an e-mail or MMS one handed without using S Voice; at least without worrying about dropping the phone. I can call anyone in my contact list one handed because it's easy to open and scroll (vs. typing the number in) with one hand. Palming the device and using your thumb you can reach about 1/3 of the way in at the very top of display and fully across the bottom 1/3. One really positive thing about the size is it's easier to use when you're in motion like in a rental car van, subway, or any place else where you're bounced around by movement. A bigger target's much easier to hit (with one or both hands). Necessity is the mother of invention.
I know you’re not a fan of the N2’s size and don't even consider it a phone but I wish you could try one for a couple of days. To your point (and I totally agree), there are quite a few things you have to learn to do differently but once you’re used to it it’s not really that bad. And like OP said there’s a lot of upside to having more screen real estate to work with.
I also have one of these which makes it tons easier to do stuff without becoming “one of those people” that look all too self-important wearing a BT headset 24/7. Although you get more attention talking to a pen then you do holding a giant slab of plastic (the N2) against your face.

It's 2/10 of an inch bigger than the SGS3's and 3/10" of an inch bigger than the One X's.

It all comes down to personal preference. For my son, it's the Note 2. For me, with YEARS upon years of experience ( ) it's the DNA - no brainer.
As always, YMMV.
And I think my son is secretly jealous.

I have a GN2 and really like it. I'd probably really like a DNA if I had one.
They both bring a feature that I consider extremely important - the large screen size is easier on my poor eyesight. I'll never go back to a small phone, and I don't necessarily think the GN2 is at the upper limit for size. When a bigger phone comes out I'm going to try it out and see
You should experiment with both until you find a reason to like one more than the other, and decide for yourself. IMO they're both fantastic, industry-leading phones, and they both have their fine points. My phone is the right fit for me, but you can only find out for yourself. If you take an honest approach to evaluating phones you might be surprised at what you end up thinking are the most important features.
Good luck in your search!

Thanks to all of you for your thoughtful responses. I'm particularly interested, though, in users who have tried the two-device strategy (my 'secret third option' in the OP). Is this viable? If I had both a DNA and a Nexus 7, would I find myself leaving the N7 at home since the display and power of the DNA are plenty, or will I be grabbing the N7 constantly since the extra display real estate is so nice? It's so hard to tell how you'll use a gadget until you're actually using it...

yea, but I', coming from a 4' LTE phone..
also, the 3/10' does make a bit of a diff, the one X I can hold in my hand much better than the DNA

DNA's a VZW phone. Can't be used outside the US (+ It's CDMA technology, just as bad as being a republican, I guess); note2 is good, but I'll go for the HTC butterfly, pre-ordered for Christmas!

HTC Droid DNA is GSM Unlocked smartphone out of the box. Works with any SIM card on almost any global carrier of your choice.
Besides being a SIM unlocked GSM phone, it clearly supports CDMA + EvDO + Band 13 LTE for Verizon's native network.

I know the question wasn't directed at me, but I can do everything one-handed in my Note 2, save for playing certain games which would require two hands with any phone anyways.

Ok sonny, it works with TMo, but still on 850/1900 GSM and 2100 AWS, still not fit for using outside the US, go learn. The ROW uses GSM & LTE on very different bands. GSM radio and a micro-SIM slot on the DNA is to give it a thin veneer of being a 'world phone', same tech as on dinc 4G, and all other VZW-specific phones.
The penta-band Nokia and Motorola offerings in the US fare much better. Learnt with bitter experience after buying a Palm pre at bestbuy, five-six years ago, only to return it six months later (when I came back to pay a visit to my sis & parents).
Edit...
Trust me in this Milan03, if you're using a US specific phone, however brand new it is, you are still behind the times....

You've failed to prove that DNA can't be used overseas. I don't care if you like Nokia or Moto better, you're missing the point.
GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 and HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 out of the box is pretty much everywhere. MiniSIM or MicroSIM it doesn't matter. Global capabilities are there.
Oh, and T-Mobile doesn't have 850Mhz holdings anywhere in the US. Get your facts straight, mkay?

You're right. Native multi-band GSM support is included in the unified SoC/radio of all Qualcomm's S4 chips. So is LTE but different chips are shipped with different bands enabled. That's why N4 owners have been able to kluge LTE on a theoretically GSM-only device. CDMA devices require an additional radio which means the DNA has two radios where GSM/LTE S4 devices have one. The space that extra radio needed may have been what cost you guys an SD card slot.

Actually, with Qualcomm's MDM9615 28nm baseband chipset, CDMA and GSM radio is integrated with full voice support, all on a single die. Fusion with two radios no longer needed. Also, quad-core S4 Pro's don't have integrated radios on the SoC anymore, thats only on Duals.
HTC J Butterfly is on KDDI network which is also CDMA + LTE, and it has SDcard slot, so the reason why DNA doesn't have card slot has nothing to do with design compromises. It has a lot to do with Verizon.
N4 LTE on Band 4 situation = careless LG software engineering team that forgot to disable it. They're also using MDM9x15 chipset, the same as in LG Optimus G which has similar RF paths so the hardware is there.
At this point they'll either have to disable it in future updates, or send another filing to FCC. Right now this could be a legal issue for accessing unlicensed spectrum.

Thanks for the correction; I don't follow CDMA that closely and just made an assumption. And there are two version of S4 Pro. The MSM8960T (dual-core) does have the cellular modem on-board while the APQ8064 (quad-core) doesn't. Since the architecture's the same I thought the wireless capabilities were too. But that brings us back to the earlier battery life discussion as having discrete cellular radios shouldn't be as efficient energy usage wise which was touted by Qualcomm as a benefit of earlier S4 chips having them integrated.

[Q] Should i get this phone?!

Im thinking of up grading to the Vibrant. Any reason not to? Is there a better phone on the horizen? Im currently with T-mobile and dont want to switch. Thanks in advance!!
Only other choice is the T-Mobile G2 (Oct 6.) or myTouch HD (rumored to release November '10?). I've gotten the Vibrant since week one and don't regret getting it. The Super AMOLED screen is definitely beautiful and one of the things admired most from this phone.
get it
best screen. like a hdtv in your pocket
t-mobile has great 3g speeds
hummingbird > snapdragon
released in 100+ countries, including every major carrier in the US so community support should be huge
there's always better phones on the horizon, but this is the phone i've been waiting for ever since the iphone was announced years ago. and it hasn't disappointed
no it sucks. *at the airport, using vibrant to tether 3g to laptop*
G2 is very appealing and I am considering switching... it comes down to physical keyboard and stock android VS bigger and much better screen, slightly better hardware..

while i understand this viewpoint, touchwhiz is easily disabled. there is also no guarantee that the G2 will get the same OTA updates as the N1 simply because it is stock android. the original droid on verizon is a good example.
but yeah, if you need/want a hardware keyboard the G2 is a better choice (obviously). unless you can deal with sprint and the epic
I got two. My wife approved.
My 3rd android phone (just from passion of the OS), this is by far my most favorite of them. Speed, Design, Display... love everything about it.
Touchwiz is actually very usable from personal experience and reviews. It added alot of 'shortcuts' that makes life alot easier. For example, swipe notification bar to change brightness while outdoor, instead of going through 3-4 menus. Overall, Vibrant is a very solid phone at stock, definitely recommend it.
Only issues now are the GPS and Froyo, mostly Froyo.
+Amazing looking screen, ignore the iPhone 4 people and their color fidelity nonsense, the Vibrant is more colorful that the iPhone 4 and looks a lot better when viewing pictures and movies.
+Runs very fast, 1ghz processor.
+Very thin and light compared to the iPhone 4 (especially now that everyone has put a case on theirs), the back is plastic not glass, but I like saving the weight and I think the patterned back looks fine, comes with 2 colored backplates in the package I got.
+Android, with an open market, unlike At&t's flavor, the Captivate.
+Currently the best T-mobile phone available if you need to get a new one right now.
+Shoots 720p at 30fps. Big selling point, my friend bought a flip video and my phone takes the exact same quality of video and I don't have to carry an additional device, the camera is 5mp and also quite good.
Some downsides
-T-mobile took out some features from the stock Galaxy S, including fm radio, front facing camera and flash. I don't really need a front facing camera or a flash, the night mode works very well and renders a flash almost useless. Fm radio would be nice but I can live without it, I just loaded up my own music.
-Bloatware, it comes with a slew of crappy apps that you cannot remove without rooting. I would strongly recommend rooting, deleting bloatware, and then unrooting (The sales rep. at T-mobile actually recomended this ) It's about as safe as it can get and very easy, 1 click root and unroot, just look for it on xda. Also expect this on other T-mobile phones, except maybe the G2.
If you can wait a little just to see what's planned for the winter you might consider it, but I doubt you will be that disappointed if you buy the vibrant now. T-mobile has had a sad list of Android phones besides the Nexus One, so I doubt there's anything better than the myTouch or G2 coming out.

So you're upset that T-Mobile isn't getting the Samsung Galaxy S Tab? What makes you think that it is 100% on Samsungs part?
This is the SAMSUNG VIBRANT forum, I honestly don't care too much about a tablet because I'll never use it. I just find the tablet and the Vibrant to be irrelevant. If anything.. why would you would a contracted tablet? If anything I would want a WiFi only version and just tether with my phone.
Samsung has been moving away from cutting exclusive deals with wireless operators for its growing slate of mobile devices. It launched its most recent smartphone, the Galaxy, with the top four U.S. wireless operators, Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile USA. T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG and the fourth-largest U.S. wireless carrier, hasn't yet worked out a deal to carry the tablet, a person familiar with the matter said.

[Q] Should I buy Titan or Titan II

Hello all,
I love big screens because I read a lot on phones,
so I decide to buy either the HTC Titan or the Titan II
my question to whom used both phones for a while
please advise which one should I invest my money in
I don't care a lot about camera or LTE network because I live in Egypt and LTE will be available within more than a year
I care a lot about signal strength and phone stability and long live
and somewhat the good looking and feel in hands
will the Titan I metal body be better than the Titan II plastic body?
I'll be waiting for your comments
and many thanks in advance
I have owned a Titan since January and find it to be one of the nicer Windows Phone 7 handsets after owning a few, However after trying a Nokia Lumia Have now ordered a Lumia 900, Screen size is 4.3" compared to 4.7" but has amoled screen and some nice Nokia Apps, Maybe worth considering? Can't comment on the Titan2 as Not available in UK yet but does look abit plasticky.

Thanks for your opinion,
and yes I know that the lumia phones are great, I've checked them at germany my self, they look great
but to be honest with you I prefer SLCD screens over AMOLED screens,
in reading small text AMOLED screens are horrible, but SLCD are great
as I said I read a lot of emails, news, and books on phones

Overall Performance is identical.. imo i like the look of the titan II but not enough to actually replace the reg titan... And the whole non removable battery i dislike... If for example i dropped the phone in water i would go for the battery OH WAIT you can't
can't speak on the titan2 but i have had my titan since november and its been rocksolid.its been dropped and accidently flung a few times and no problems.i use a rubber case and screen protector as the environments i work in are harsh. Great phone and excellent operating system. camera is good and the spec stands up to the recently released 900 and titan2 win7.5 phones. if you don't need lte and 16 mb camera then the titan is the one i would choose as they've sorted all the bugs that some of the titans had.
OK, but what about call quality on the Titan I
and rceiption bugs
I had a Titan until I shattered the screen. So, I got a Titan II.
Both are great phones, but you may as well get the Titan II for the extra benefits (camera, LTE, etc). It will not hurt you.

Mostly since things are fixed with updates while AT&T sucks at that
it does seem atandt titans had more than their share of problems where as the european unlocked titans have been for the most part very good. a couple issues with the early release pre nov 2011 but from nov on a good phone with regular updates

Looking to get a new phone...

I'm currently a proud owner of a Virgin Mobile LG Optimus V running Android 4.0.4 It's a great little phone- I'm guessing it is virtually indestrcutible- (I dropped it. ALOT. And spilled some water. Not even a hiccup!). It's a little phone that could and for something like this- it's amazing, but I feel it's time for an upgrade. As great as it is, let's face it. It's ancient. A 600MHz ARM V6 processor, 418MB of memory, and it's screen is only 3.2". It's opnly supposed to run Froyo. /FROYO/. That's pretty ancient. I'm looking for a new phone, but here's the catch- It has to be on a reasonably inexpensive pre-paid plan. (My parents don't want me to get a contract and I don't blame them, they can be expensive.) Virgin Mobile (My current carrier; 35 dollars a month with unlimited 3G) has only two "decent" phones- A 199.99 HTC One V. A SOLID phone but seriously, 512MB RAM and a SINGLE CORE 1GHz is really not a lot. On the other hand, they have the 300 dollar Evo V 3D with 4G, though it's not really something I want and it's a bit over my prace range- (Up to 250 USD).
While searching plans, I found T-Mobile's 30 dollar Monthly 4G plan. It's wonderful for me. I don't call much but I use lots of data and text alot. T-Mobile also has better coverage, and this is 4G. Not boring old 3G. (I don't mind 3G, but 4G is just better.) While thinking of decent phones I could manage to get GSM Unlocked, I thought Galaxy SII, Galaxy Nexus, and a few others. I looked all around Craigslist NYC, Amazon, Google, and Ebay for all phones and I found that on ebay the bids for a decent SII in decent condition could reasonably be bought for under $250 (T-Mobile/GSM). I'm wondering- Do I need the GSM or the T-Mobile variant, or will either work. Is this phone good and a value for the money? I really like the design and the specs on it. It also has lots of JB ROMs and Native ICS which is a HUGE plus.
Also, is there any difference between the SII with the Capacitive buttons and the one with a huge Home button? (P.S.: I like the one with all capacitive buttons more )
Thanks for reading this.Any answers/input is greatly appreciated.
Edit! I was looking at the ebay link again and found a website called Wirefly where they are offering a SII 4G for 100 bucks if I make a new account. Does this count with a Prepaid account? And if so, is the SII 4G compatible with normal SII roms?

Your profile says you're in the US, so I'm assuming your talking about T-Mobile USA.
The Galaxy S II for T-Mobile is massively different than the "one with the huge home button", as you refer to it. They have completely different hardware, including SoC/CPU/GPU.
The "one with the huge home button" is the I9100, and this post is currently in the forum for that device.
The one for T-mobile USA that has the 4 capacitive buttons is the SGH-T989, and that device has its own forum.
There are also other variants for US carriers AT&T, Sprint, and US Cellular. The one for US Cellular doesn't have its own forum but is somewhat closely related hardware wise to the Sprint variant, so there are posts concerning it within that forum. But the AT&T, Sprint, and T-mobile USA variants are all different from each other, and they are all different from the I9100.

Pretty sure they only have one.
If you have questions about the T-mobile version, you should post in the T-mobile forum. This device does work on T-mobile USA's network, but only gets Edge, as it doesn't fully work to get "4G" on that network.

You need to consider what network you're intending on running the device on before you get the device itself.
The i9100 gets high speed data on AT&T's network, but only gets Edge on T-mobile USA's network. There's nothing that can be done about this; the phone antenna hardware just doesn't receive one of the two necessary frequencies to make it happen.
I've heard rumors that the T-mobile variant can be modified to get high speed data on AT&T's network, but it doesn't work that way out of the box.
The LTE variant that AT&T sells (the Skyrocket) can reportedly be modified to get high speed data on T-mobile USA's network, but it doesn't work that way out of the box.
EDIT: BTW, the Skyrocket has its own separate forum from the AT&T variant as well.

As I said, the i9100 (which is the international device) will only get Edge speeds on T-mobile USA's network. As long as you know this going in...
Any questions pertaining to the device actually sold by T-mobile should go to the forum for that device.

Its fine, really. I simply do not like any of the T-Mobile prepaid phones. Bad dev support/specs. I'd gladly get a postpaid but they're expensvce , contracts are a hassle, and my parents won't let me get a contract: prepaid only. I live 4 blocks from a TMobile phone, I can just buy the plan there.
Also, I think the S3 is out of my price range. Plus, the s2 is still a great phone and I kinda like the design more.

For the first time, Rogers & AT&T are not the same devices ...

For the first time I'm concerned.
I should be getting my Rogers Optimus G tomorrow, but all the recent specification information leads me to understand that the Rogers unit and the AT&T units are not the same device ... when they are usually identical (with the exception of some minor issues).
The Rogers device appears to be far more similar with the Sprint (and Korean) designs. It DOES NOT have an SDCard slot, but the camera is only 8MB, and the Rogers device is the first in North America (perhaps the world) that will utilize the superior LTE signal (2600MHz), which should result in download speeds approaching 75+ Mbps. Yes, it also has the 700MHz spectrum, but not the somewhat slower 1700MHz frequency.
My concern, though, is with ROM development. If it's not an AT&T unit, per se, and not a Sprint unit, what can we do?
Any ideas from the experts?
Peter

I've never had an LG device, and I've been reading lots to get prepared. I, too, noticed that the bootloaders are locked. Even though I really need LTE for my job, I'm very seriously considering getting the Nexus 4.
Peter
If you need LTE for work maybe hold out for the HTC One X+
Edit: I guess that's not LTE actually, will I'll tell you aside from a couple issues only software so far this phone is a beast fast as hell and the build quality sends fantastic. The volume buttons rattle a little if you tap the screen hard but I think it's just cause the device is so solid.

As of now, there doesn't seem to be much going on in the dev section for the AT&T unit either. Even if the bootloader was unlocked, then what? Without devs?
I just made a similar post in the "who's got this phone" thread. The N4 comes out today, all we can do is wait and see what happens. Since it shares almost identical hardware, it shouldn't take much to port ROMs/kernels back and forth.

Porting between the two should actually be easy, I am pretty sure I have done enough cooking of my own to take up that. But with locked bootloaders there is nothing we can do for now.

Here's my software information for Rogers model LG-E971 RGS:
Android: 4.0.4
Baseband: APQ8064/MDM9x15M
Kernel: 3.0.21
Build: IMM76L
Software: E97110d
All appear to be the same as the AT&T version, with the exception of the Software version.

Hi Peter,
not sure if it was using the 2600MHz band at the time, but I DID have a speedtest run reaching just over 100Mb/s. Although the speed was a bit higher than my SGS3 (used the same SIM and got around 70Mb/s), a higher frequency means shorter wavelength which also means less penetrating power through walls and any other physical medium. Based on that, I'm wondering if it is truly superior.
---------- Post added at 01:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:24 PM ----------
i think Rogers, Bell, and Telus all have the same version, i.e. the E971. Unless I'm mistaken, seems the breakdown is as follows:
E973 - 32GB storage, 13MP camera
E971 - 32GB storage, 8MP camera
E970 - 16GB storage, 8MP camera, microSD slot (expandable memory)
imo, the E970 looks the best and i would also prefer the expandable storage over better camera. it is indeed a shame that rogers didn't get the AT&T variant; we, Rogers folk, seem to have gotten the worst of the bunch. I wonder if, perhaps, the E972 would be/is a 16GB version with 13MP camera.
Seriously considering getting this phone myself on Rogers.
Especially after the Nexus 4 debacle.
But the locked bootloader would mean no CM10 and that is the only thing holding me back from buying this phone.
I wonder why LG would do this.
Is there a chance that some genius developer will be able to figure out a way to unlock the bootloader without LG's blessing?

it's definitely a nice phone; i prefer the hardware over my SGS3, but HATE that the E971's storage is limited to 32GB, not even all of which is usable.

Peter-
I'm curious how you got your phone so quickly? I reserved an E971 over a month ago, was supposedly #3 on the Reservation waitlist (Rogers PR BS, of course) and yet only received the shipping notice yesterday which means it probably won't show up in the wild west here until late next week. And yet still I've already received my E970 from Amazon Wireless in the US in TWO DAYS, and SIM-unlocked it for use on my Rogers account.
Anyways - regarding the versions and hardware revisions - YES. These are the two reasons I decided to order the E970. Because the domestic Canadian versions have no SD-card support at all, and second will have far less aftermarket support for ROMs and software. I believe GSMArena claimed the Rogers model would be E971, and Bell and Telus would be the stock 'international' E973 model which might fare slightly better.
But having talked to a Qualcomm engineer I know, he suggested that the S4 Pro is entirely software-driven for LTE configuration. So as I asked in another thread, does this mean the baseband software could be rewritten or substituted from another model to edit the LTE bands the radio operates on? ie E971->E970 or L-01E->E970?
Hmm, I simply reserved as usual ...

I did nothing special. I simply reserved the unit as usual. I was #5 on the list and it arrived at my local Rogers Plus store exactly on the day of release.
I'm in Mississauga, and I know that Rogers' warehouse is also in the GTA, so when something ships, I always get it the next day.

@amrando
Curious - does the AT&T version work with LTE on Rogers? I know it is lacking the 2600 band, but it still has the 2100. I'm considering getting the AT&T version for the exact same reason as you - expandable storage and better community support, but don't want a crippled LTE phone. Also, how/where did you get it unlocked?
Cheers
The Att version uses 700/AWS for LTE. As long as you're in a 700mHz area, you should be ok

Bought Another V60 And It Weighs Completely Differently

Hey Guys,
I just had to buy another v60 because I had purchased an AT&T version while using T-Mobile. The phone works until July when Tmo phases outs some legacy bands. So I bought a proper T-Mobile LG V60. I went all out and bought a genuine new one and its great but I noticed it weighs A LOT LESS than my previous AT&T. Its weighs 7.6oz, which matches specs, so I'm not worried, but its my older AT&T I'm wondering about, it weighs 8.2oz! I always thought it was heavy and just attributed it to the 5000mah batt. Can anyone with an AT&T confirm that theirs is also that heavy(8.2oz)??
It's possible that the difference in weight is due to the modem (i. e. CDMA vs. GSM, if that applies). Other than that, I don't know what else could be the cause.

Ok thanks for the input. It's like a brick compared to my new phone. It even stays cooler longer because of the extra mass when charging. I've searched the forums, reddit and Google and can't find any reference to the extra weight. I guess you wouldn't notice unless you had bought two different versions of the phone though.
