Pursue the DNA - HTC Droid DNA

I switched to Verizon a week ago from sprint and a nexus s 4g. I picked the RAZR M because sprint wouldn't repair a faulty refurb they sent me so I needed a phone. The RAZR m was cheap and seemed really solid. In fact its a great phone. However I am of the mindset if you're on Verizon and have the funds go for the DNA. Since Verizon extended their return policy I can use Christmas money and return this. My only concerns with the DNA are
1. Battery life -my RAZR m which gets great life has almost the same size battery.
2. Support -moto is owned by Google and updates are being churned out fast, HTC however has a history of not supporting. The DNA is future proof spec wise but will HTC support.
3. Build quality- after switching to moto build quality has become important. Kevlar back aluminum body etc. Are all present in my "mid range" phone
4. Roms -with my RAZR I've excepted lack of ROMs and dev support, but almost stock makes this acceptable. Sense however is tolerable, but heavy. I could deal with it but would look to replace it later with AOSP
5. Memory-7 the 8gb isn't cutting it , I need the 16gb.
Can anyone who has a DNA or experience with one speak on these? Thanks
Sent from my RAZR M using xda app-developers app

Memory is actually 11gb
Sent from my HTC Droid DNA

After you root the DNA and flash a new ROM you'll have about 11 gigs for whatever your needs. Many users are reporting that they are not having problems with the battery life, so I think you'll find it acceptable. The DNA has top notch build quality--most HTC phones do. Just go to a Verizon store and check it out. You'll be pleasantly surprised. As far as getting AOSP is concerned, I wouldn't hold your breath just yet. It could happen down the road

1. Battery life is much better than most reviews say. will last me more than the whole day. Especially with cubed kernel
2. Roms will cover updates
3. the build quality on this phone is amazing! i love the feel of it
5. There's already a few good Roms on the phone, and from what i can see the devs are very talented and will bring lots more roms to this phone!
6. Memory, this phone is advertised with 16 gigs. Stock its 11 gigs available. But once you debloat it becomes closer to the 16 gig mark

I hope HTC doesn't skip us out of future upgrade this phone is to beast to do that.

Thanks y'all sound confident and happy with your devices. I'll leave the thread open in case any other experts want to chime in. I think I'll collect my earnings for Christmas, then gauge from there . If I have the difference I'll pull the trigger, if not oh well It sounds extremely pleasing to own.

Sense is a lot less resource hungry than what it was. Couple that with 2gb of RAM and a quad core, you're not going to get lag.
The build quality of the DNA is amazing. It as a very solid feel and is definitely durable.
In all honesty the battery is nowhere near as bad as some people make it out to be. sure, it doesn't get the maxx life but its a 2,020mAh and given that it uses a 5" 1080p screen the battery life "fits." even if HTC doesn't update often the developers will certainly pick up the slack.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2

This phone is solid as they come in build quality, love the solid feel of it in my hand...that's what she said.

I've had a bad experience with motorola and updates. The photon 4g for sprint is still stuck on gingerbread and will never be updated passed that. The phone was on a list to get ics but moto canned it.

Yea I'm aware of moto's ****ty history with updates and with lock bootloaders that puts you @ verizon's mercy. But HTC is pretty bad as well. t's just that the Dev community is so exciting for the DNA it won't be an issue. With my razr M however I have practically no reason to visit XDA anymore lol. This is a reason for me contemplating the switch, the deep community behind it. Not Nexus S deep, but enough to satisfy.

Great phone
I won my phone thanks to HTC's ambassador program (you can read about it on htcsource dot com) and I love it! Today was a good testament to the battery as I was out shopping with my wife most of the day and am about to finally plug it in. My previous phone was a One S so I was somewhat already used to the limited amount of storage, but I do think to myself sometimes that 32GB is a much amount. I would love to carry more music since I don't have the luxury of free WiFi at work. The storage had yet to be a deal breaker for me, because there are so many other perks to this phone. I absolutely love the possibilities with NFC and the screen size is freaking awesome to look at.
I say go for it!

After only having Moto smartphones for the last few years, I've never experienced HTC. How are they with their updates?
I know with Moto the updates were taking ages, but looking back it was a little fun trying this and that to get things to work. I forget the saying, but it's something about enjoying the trip more than getting to the destination.

if you have a verizon phone, your updates will take ages, period. moto, htc, samsung, doesn't matter. verizon is who dictates when the updates go out, and they're ALWAYS last.

I got to hold and play with a DNA the other day and man does it feel nice in hand. Top notch build quality, super fast and that screen is amazing. Makes me jealous I'm not due for an up grade but the DNA will definitely get more support and roms than the RAZR simply because moto is so hell bent on locking down their devices

Ya, that's what I'm afraid of because this is a Verizon phone.
Well, once someone figures out our s-on problem we will have the hardware to handle anything.

honestly though, coming from a guy who roots everything, i'm really enjoying the phone stock. i wihs i were rooted so that i could remove the wifi nag and make the recent apps button into a menu button, but other than that, this thing rocks stock.

Just a quick fyi to help you enjoy stock better. Just long press the wifi notif and press app info then just force stop it. The annoying notif will be gone til you reboot.

The rommer in me is not satisfied.

What Instead of TBolt?

If the latest rumors are true and we won't be seeing a TBolt for a while .... what else are you guys looking forward to?
I like what we have had in the rootability of the HTC line up, hoping to stay w/them, but just curious to what else you guys/gals have been looking at in addition to this?
I think this was the only phone i was really looking forward too... but now I may have to reconsider after todays news..
The "stealth" looks ok but I dont want another phone with hard keys ( coming from X)
Then there is the Bionic... lol yeah right unless moto goes the route of the Xoom or there is a breakthough in bypassing by then.
The top LG phone is going GSM at first I hear.. will be a while till we see a version.
Same with the Galaxy 2, Gonna be gsm at first...
This really sucks.
I'm not leaving VZW and nothing else that we know is coming appeals to me like the TBolt. Hopefully they will get their crap together sooner rather than later. Sometimes being first (lte phone) is frustrating and disorganized.

I was really hoping the Thunderbolt would be released this month. I guess ill be holding off for the Bionic now to see how they compare...i really like the webtop app and hope that Motorolas statement about it being included in all high end smartphones includes the bionic.
Does anyone know how the modified blur on the bionic compares to the standard blur?

Every review I've read says that the webtop is slow and frustrating with the Atrix. The Bionic is suppose to have half the ram, doubt it will be included at all or we would have heard about it.

I almost made a thread like this. I have been considering exploring other options since the Thunderbolt release didn't go as expected. The Thunderbolt seems like an almost perfect device, but may have some flaws or setbacks. Possible issues with battery, 4G, Skype, and no Netflix. Granted, I don't believe they ever said it would have Netflix, but it would have been nice. And an HDMI port! I still can't get over that one. Why would you not put one on there, every other powerhouse phone has one.
Some other similar phones coming to Verizon to consider would be the Droid Bionic, LG Revolution, and the Samsung 4G phone.
Here is a video comparing the 4 phones. I think the guy may have some of his specs mixed up, but it is a good side by side.

But the thing is just the wait for all these other phones is gonna be that much longer. I doubt another one will be out the gate before TB because it's already been advertised as our first. Don't get me wrong, I'll love HTC and Android forever, but the wait is just making me want to jump ship to the Palm Pre 2. Laugh all you want, but it's pretty much the next option for me from what's currently available.

Is MotoBlur the Moto desktop/launcher on phones? My BF has the DroidPro and when I mess around w/his phone I don't notice anything really different about how it operates - but I think I remember reading someplace that the Pro doesn't have Blur.
If it is a desktop/launcher, can't folks just replace it w/LPro or ADW or something?
I must be way off on what Blur actually is? (and I'm running late and too lazy to search at the moment, lol).

It's not that the other phones will be released before the TB, it's that they will be released not long after now. Since the release dates are now pretty close to each other, would it be worth it to wait for a different phone?
The LG Revolution should be Q2 the last I heard. It has a 4.3" screen, HDMI out, and should have Netflix out of the box. It will also be the first voLTE to Verizon, making it as some people call it, a "true" 4G phone.
While the phone does has a front facing camera, the back camera is only a 5MP and single LED flash. No kickstand. Since it is an LG, it will lack a good interface like Sense, or even Motoblur. LG normally builds quality phones though.
I'm giving up. Going to get a Droid 1, root and customize it. I'll use that and decide if I even want Verizon's service at this point.

metropcs has been selling lte phones for a few months now. but maybe not in your area....
As for leaving VZW i did that and got a galaxy s 4g on tmobile. i loved the price, and the speed when near a 4g tower.. however i still recieved dropped calls.. (the onle smart phone that did that to me on vzw was the iphone) and the 4g coverage is horrible and the speed is erratic in good coverage areas..
I had a falling apart droid 1 that I bought on launch day and needed something new I ended up getting a droid x off ebay and loading a custom rom and done.. now i feel i have plenty of time to wait out a decent lte phone... most of the other lte phones on vzw are scheduled to launch in second QTR so really the next 3 months...
I am going to wait for a little bit now...
I still have my D1 rooted, overclocked, customized, etc. But the thing is so outdated it lags with all the crap I have loaded on it. This puts me in a crappy situation because my contract has been up since january. I was waiting on this as my next phone. If I could find a cheap phone (aka under $50 D2, Dinc or DX), I would use that for the time being for the next few months. I just almost feel like I'm wasting time because I could have started the 2 year countdown for another phone by now.
red, i played with the atrix today, and while BLUR still blows nutt juice that phone had a sex like screen if you will and blur ran buttery smooth compared to the droid x or 2, it never studdered or got choked up and although quadrant doesnt tell you much, i watched the 3d test and the FPS where off the freakin charts sometimes i saw well over 100 and it maintained a constant 60+ easily, given this phone had absolutely no apps running or even installed other than att ****ware. i was truly impressed and downloaded a couple of games while i played with it, the tegra really shines on graphic intensive stuff, i also played with the docking unit and while ive read production units dont have multi touch the display did and i must say that it was impressive. first time i have been impressed with moto that much since november of 09 with the droid 1. Hopefully when we get some rock solid info on the bionic it will have the 1gb of ram and not 512, in talking to some knowledgeable peeps about they seem to think that this could be possible since it will be basically the same as the atrix and they seemed to think that the 512mb of ram was a misprint or just a wrong quote entirely, if so, i may say **** it and go with the locked bootloader just to have such a kick ass phone. the camera was either really impressive or the screen just made it look that good, all around i would say that the the atrix is currently the most dominant phone in the android world. galxy s2 looks nice but ive already fell for that once with the fascinate(btw is still eclair in stock for FYI) but still uses the over saturated SAMOLED with the same resolution something like 800x480 and that is getting to be old news especially after playing with atrix today, if you lose hope on the bolt, the bionic will def be a winner in my book bootloader and all. screw it................well maybe not with the bootloader, depends whether i get a semi when i play with it or not the first time.
No offense to eris owners, but if you really want to give up and set the bar extremely low so you will be satisfied with any new phone you get, i suggest get an eris. lol i laugh at people who say their rooted eris will smoke the DInc, ive owned both, and if i stuck a rocket up the micro usb port on the eris it still couldnt catch the trusty old DInc. Now, back to the search for strippers and cocaine
Yeah the 512 ram on the Bionic is a turn off. I thought it was supposed to have 1gb, but motorolas website says 512. It seems like most of verizons phones always fall short of the other networks counterparts. Even my HTC Touch Pro had less ram than all the other Touch Pros on every network.

So, if go to a Moto Razr I'll be more satisfied than my GingerTazz Eris?

I'm almost thinking of the incredible, wondering if I can get one for fairly cheap w/o going thru VZ that way I'll still only be locked into the rest of this contract (up in early 2012).

yeah.. that is what i did ... except I went to the droidX so that I could get familiar with the 4.3inch size... I am very happy with this ... I have it rooted and am running the fission rom which is fast and stable. I came from a droid 1 that i purchased on launch day ... and it was starting to fall apart.. (no more sliders for me).... although I like the samsung galaxy s 4g i was concerned it did not have a message indicator light. I also stopped by an att store and played with an atrix and it was pretty sweet for the few minutes i spent with it...
either way it does look like another 3 months before we have any real phones from vzw ... I still think they are delaying these phones until they have there new lte pricing laid out... I don't think for a minute they will have unlimited lte on anything.

It'll either be a DInc, stay w/my Eris and keep working w/Tazz's fine ROM's or buy a B&N Nook Color and hack it (because I CAN! lol). I feel the need to spend $$ (I don't have) for no reason
EDIT: Out of curiosity, why would somebody buy a phone on eBay w/a bad ESN? I see phones FS on there w/bad ESN's and wondering what you would do with one? Just use it for development or parts?
You can usually use those phones on cricket and other services like that. Some people also buy them for parts.

[Q] X2 vs TB

Hello forum,
I've read about 9 hrs worth of info on here in 2 days. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. I will try and keep this short, I might fail.
I came from an org d1 with cm7, great phone. Its old hardware and I was due for an upgrade.
I just got the HTC Thunderbolt 2 days ago. I'm not very impressed with it AT ALL. I realllllly hate the HTC SENSE gui. I've never liked HTC to begin with. But the TB had 4g (which I just found out I wont get untill 2013) and a FF Camera. I don't really care about 4G anymore, any good crap I do over WiFi anyways. As far as the FF Camera, it was fun, im over it.
I have 14 days (12) to change my mind and was told I can switch phones. I really wanted the X2 in the first place, but I went with the TB. What I really want is just a beast phone that can last 2 years with upcoming tech. Everyone I hear talking about the dual core stuff says its over rated because no OS or APPs use it yet. I've been watching some Videos on the X2 and Im liking it more.
What I wonder is if its going to have any development? The HTC TB already has tons of custom ROMs and CM7 is about there. Do you guys think the X2 will get any attention? Will there be custom ROMs? I really dont like MOTOBLUR but I would be able to put up with it for 6 months over the sense.
How is the battery? Without 4G even turned on I cant even get a full day off this TB.
Is it pretty smooth and fast? I'm a little worried about the RAM .... 512 vs 768? I mean coming from the D1 512 should be fine..... but does it feel smooth?
Are there ways right now (I know you can root) to debloat it and take off MOTOBLUR ? I really just want a clean AOSP, but I'm very willing to wait for development. I just wonder if the X2 will get any attention.
Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Sorry so long.
If you want custom roms then stick with the Thunderbolt. Until the Motorola bootloader gets unlocked you won't be able to fully flash a custom rom.
Also the X2 does not have MOTOBLUR on it. And yes it is possible to root using gingerbreak and remove any bloatware.
I just got my X2 yesterday and the UI seems to be a lot smoother with the dual core processor compared to my old X. If you don't get 4G coverage then I would definitely go with the X2. Also in my experience Motorola phones tend to have better battery life over HTC.
The X2 does have MOTOBLUR but it is the updated version they use normally with gingerbread which is not as bad as the version they had before.
As for development like the previous poster said, until Motorola unlocks the bootloader and an sbf is found/created. ROMs are out of the question at the moment..
Personally I came from the TB and although the TB had all the custom ROMs th X2 has made me happy with the smooth UI, after some tweaking, and the battery life is alot better.
It's going to be a trade-off. If you like to root/ mod you're going to have to wait on the X2 for a while. I read they just cracked the Droid X for CM 7, so there's hope but no idea on when we might have a full range of option for the X2.
On the other hand, the DX2 works great out of the box and my only major complaint is no Gingerbread yet. I've used both and, given the TB's battery life sucks and I'm not around a 4G area at work or home and won't be for a while, the X2 is the better option in my opinion. The TB is not a bad phone over all, but without the 4G it's not a compelling device to need right now IMO.
I'd recommend you go with the X2 and wait until 4G LTE is both widespread and all the bugs are worked out in the system.
I've tried all of Verizon's 4G phones within my 14 day return period. (I'm paying full price, so I didn't just want to settle with playing with a floor model for a few minutes to make a decision.) Anyway, it was something about each one that made me not want to keep them. (Although I saw the Charge received an update that made the phone 2-3 times better from what I'm reading from users across different forms.) But I settled with the DX2. Far better signal than any of the others I had. Much better battery life. Better build quality by far. As smooth as the Thunderbolt, even with 512 of RAM. And it has the Dual Core processors, which will eventually be beneficial once more phones get them and more developers start working around them, software and app wise. I get 4G in my area in 2 months and I still choose to go with a 3G phone, because a page loading a few seconds faster on 4G than mine does on 3G, has absolutely no importance in my life. I think ffc's are kind of overrated right now, but will be the norm in the future when almost everyone has a phone with a camera on it. We can only hope Motorola will unlock the bootloader. I doubt Verizon would approve of that, but still, the original Droid X received some pretty good attention from dev's. As you can see, it was thought of enough that someone worked hard to get CM7 on there. So the dev attention will be there.
Thanks for all your help guys..... still a tough choice...
But since the X2 has a "locked bootloader" that means there will never be custom ROMs untill MOTO themselfs release an update to unlock it or what? Did the ORG droid X have a locked bootloader? Wasnt there custom roms on it?
I had a thunderbolt but the battery life was just to bad for me to keep it when i was near stl and had 4g it went from 100% to 25 in no time flat so i couldnt handle that. the droid x2 with all the bloat ware ran decently fast but once u take off bloat ware its great phone with much better battery but if you want 4g id say go with lg revolution it seems to be better i only played with in store but i liked it also

No, Yes and Yes. The bootloader on the original X is still locked. That just means that you don't have complete control over the kernel. Custom roms can certainly still be added once root is established. Also, if anybody's been watching the blogs, CM7 has been release for the original X. It's a bit of backwards magic of loading overtop and after the original kernel, but it's reported to be working great.
Indeed, I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that CM7 on the DX means we're in line for it on the X2!

Haha, me and you are both in the same place
I'm leaning towards returning the X2 and getting the Tbolt, but the extra $135 I'll have to pay is making me unsure..since I have no income.
The good thing is, is that I read earlier today that the new Nexus phone is supposed to have a LTE radio. (Verizon maybe?!) Either that or the Galaxy S 2..both seem like good choices.

Besides, the Charge is still a single core phone.
OMG ! Some of you people are so picky! If I could have my X2's babies I would! I love this phone and I'm in the same situation as the OP. I won't get 4G til around until 2013 and I'll be eligible for an upgrade in January 2013. By then, I'm hoping to get whatever new multi-core, 4G, 3D display, FFC phone they have because I'm sure all of that will be more of a standard *AND* hopefully there will be better battery life for those kinds of features. Until then, gogo Droid X2!
FFC isn't all that great without 4G anyway and even if it was great on 3G, I still don't see myself using it until video calling becomes much more popular. I don't even know anyone else with an FFC for video calling, so how useful is that?? You gotta ask yourself: Who do I know with FFCs? and: Are we really gonna video chat a lot? Unless you're a hardcore SKYPEr or you are on business trips away from your wife and kids a lot, why not just stick to the casual video chatting you may or may not do on your PC?
Minus the custom ROM this is still a great phone and handsdown a top choice if you're gonna be outside the 4G bubbles for a while! Just sayin'.
You won't see any custom development until both an SBF file and the first update to the phone release. For the record, I'm quite surprised neither have leaked yet. Usually the SBF leaks in the first week or two and there is an update within the first couple weeks to fix stability issues. The X2 has so many stability issues that I think they're just going to push GB to the device rather than try to fix all the Froyo problems. That being said, it could still be a while before we see GB. I also wouldn't own this phone without being willing to root it. Too unstable without being able to fix the memory allocation problems.

That's a good point. Now that I think about it, a single core phone isnt worth $300 dollars , even if it has 4G... I just rooted my X2, and now I going to try to uninstall the bloat, but it already feels faster.
lol, i have a brand spankin new dx2 i am willing to trade for a tbolt!!

I'll second the comment that nearly all the VZW phones involve compromises of some sort. The compromises on the X2 are the lack of 4G, the not-quite-top-tier screen, and the fact that we might not see custom ROMs for a very long time.
That said, my phone is my lifeline, and the X2 meets my need for good build quality, good reception, a loud speaker (I'm a little hard at hearing), and that can get me into and out of my work-related apps quickly.
I feel like I got a good PHONE that's solid, loud, reliable, and pretty quick. Good enough for me for now. If I get Cryogen on it, then all the better, but it won't kill it for me.
Chris
I had the TB and it was a POS. Bad gps, light leaks, horrible battery, terrible speaker, kickstand started peeling after a month. I'm not saying my DX2 is perfect, but it kicks the TB's ass. Love my dual core monster.

So would you still do it

My incredible is seriously on its last legs, and I have to move off of it. The rezound seems to have its share of problems, but the nexus is still m.i.a.
So ... For those of you with the rezound, with whatever annoyances you are dealing with ... Are you still happy you got it?

When I first heard of the big three phones (Rezound, Nexus, RAZR) coming out around the same time, I was torn as to which phone to go with. However, as I started looking at the specs on each phone, the Rezound stuck out as the clear winner for me. The fact that the RAZR does not have a replaceable battery and has the lowest screen resolution became deal breakers on that one. The fact that the Nexus does not have a slot to upgrade memory and the fact I had seen many discussions surrounding Samsung build quality became a deal breaker on that one. With that, the Rezound became the clear choice for me. I upgraded from the Thunderbolt. I have been very impressed so far. The screen is AMAZING on the rezound. The only downer for me with the Rezound right now is the lack of full root and S-off to be able to do some customization and hopefully improve battery life. Personally, I think the Rezound is a great phone!
This is a phenomenal phone and I have no regrets buying it, I came from an Incredible and went to the RAZR returned the RAZR and got the Rezound, haven't looked back at all.
I was gonna wait for the Nexus phone, but I'm not an AOSP guy, "sense" is what bought me.
It all depends on which skinned version you like best.
1) Vanilla
2) Blur
3) Sense
My only annoyance with it is the bloatware and lack of root, which is all VZ's fault, not HTC's. I think they did a wonderful job with the device so far. I loooove the screen, I really don't miss the deeper blacks from the AMOLED of the Dinc because the RZ is just so damn sharp!
I LOVE this phone! I came from a rooted, tricked out Dinc... Thanks to Nils and Joel.
Would I do it again? Heck yes!

That is precisely why I am looking forward to S-OFF to remove all the bloat! I know removing some of it should really help get more out of the battery and should make the phone run like a dream!
i used my inc the other day for the first time in two days, and i've gotta say, although the blacks were darker with amoled, this screen is so much sharper and i think the blacks on the rezound's lcd actually make reading whtie text a little easier, for example on the xda app wiht the dark theme applied. i love it!

same here totally agree. I did the same thing.
The only problem I have is battery life. It's about the same as stock Incredible life. I know once we get root that will be easy to fix though. I love Sense, so this was a no brainer for me. I can't wait until we start getting some roms out
I upgraded from the incredible and got the Rezound a few days ago, it's kind of laggy but I just read that a factory reset may fix the issue. I kind of want to return it and get the Nexus.

Why is not having soff and root an issue? It's inevitable that we will have it shortly. Is there a single phone.. htc or otherwise on these forums that is not rooted?

It makes it kind of useless to ask for opinions if only one is allowed to be expressed without being called a troll. Besides, he can't take it back now and get the Nexus, can he?
Anyway, the Rezound is by far the greatest phone I've ever owned. The screen is gorgeous, it feels great in your hand, and I haven't noticed any lag at all.
I Love the phone. It feels great in the hand and you can just feel the quality. I had a thunderbolt before this and I hook my phone up through AUX input in my truck EVERY time I drive it. The quality of sound that comes from the rezound is light years ahead of my thunderbolt. Like its a night and day difference, even in pandora the sound quality is WAYYYYYYYYYYY better.
Sounds like the phone is legit....i'm currently on a rooted TBolt and one can honestly say that there isn't much of a difference to the Rezound (albeit hardware), but seems like dev work has just come to a screethching halt and not that I need to be constantly changing ROM's every day (which I will admit to doing on certain occasions) but just feels outdated and a lost cause so root hardly plays a hand in this case anyways.
The rezound being a dual core 1.5 ghz phone certainly is appealing as well as the beats audio integration that I would certainly welcome since i'm always listening to music while running or in the car. Just want to pick your guys' heads on wether purchasing it justify's a bit of an upgrade, but not much per say. Any info is valuable and well appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Oh, another thing to add, the Beats audio only works on the native HTC Music app correct? Doesn't on google music nor Pandora or does it?
correct on beats, alpine.
as for the upgrade being worth it, well, it was for me..i came from the OG inc (july 2010) and although that's a damn good phone, i just wanted something faster and new...and i 100% love this phone, and would do it again in a heartbeat if i had to lol

[Q] Is the OTA 2.04 Unlock likely?

I just grabbed this phone from Verizon, since the dev community is small compared to my other 2 options (Razr HD Maxx and Galaxy S3), however, with this new pesky 2.04 OTA that came pre-installed on my DNA, it seems like the community is currently at a halt.
I have approx 10 more days to return my DNA and get a second choice (Razr or Galaxy), but the hardware is really holding me to the DNA. I don't care much for Sense, and I've always been a motorola fan, however I also love to dev and mess with my phones. So, how likely is this 2.04 unlock? Or should I just go ahead and switch phones? Both the S3 and Razr have great dev communities. S3 has 2gb ram while the Razr has 1gb ram BUT has that amazing battery.
What should I do? I'm so indecisive right now and it's killing me!
I wouldn't buy a phone based on what might happen in the future. If nothing else, you could always sell it and buy one unlocked and s off.
The S3 is decent although old and I suspect dev support is on the downhill slope. I'm personally not a fan of the Razr. If it was my choice to make I'd keep the DNA or sell it and get one unlocked, or get a Note 2 to hold me over until Verizon gets the next HTC. The DNA 2 or One Variant.

why not take it back to the store and swap it out instead? Just don't let the store reps update your software. I never let them do anything more then activate my sim card
Guess its a good thing the woman that sold me mine was not familiar with smartphones, I had to show her how to take out the SIM tray. I declined the update so I could familiarize myself to sense coming from the razr maxx

You think the phone was updated and didn't just come already preloaded with the new software? I don't remember having to sit through any update, she simply opened it, popped in the sim card, and had me log into my gmail. If that's the case, then I might try that route.
I came from the Maxx and think the DNA is so much more of a phone that I live we the battery size. I got to say that there is something innate to flashaholics that we must have the latest version and once we have it, we want to newest version. In the end, they all still do the same damn thing. We risk bricking, endless hours of trying to fix something we may have screwed up in flashing variants and trying every rom out there and trying again and again. The DNA is a great phone as is. You will always want the next phone regardless so make a decision based on the phone in your hand not what it may be like once you get rooted and start the insanity again of trying to make it better. You can deactivate bloat, hid things in app drawer, it is still blazing fast, a portable battery hub solves the battery issue better than having to plug in everywhere, the Qi pad is sweet, still fits in jean pockets and it has a beautiful screen.

Why do you have to point out the amazingness of this phone and make my decision even harder!? I do agree with you though. The DNA has amazing more-than-currently-needed hardware, and that's really what's making my decision so hard. I have faith in the unlock, and plenty of patience, but it's hard being a developer and not being able to dev. I hate being restricted. I'm almost to the point of getting the Note II, but the phablet size is keeping me away for now.
Thanks for the input!

Before the update came out I didn't root or unlock because I think phone is amazing on a stock rom. HTC really did a nice job. Although once it stops getting otas I will unlock root and put a custom rom and kernel but until then I'm just staying on stock. I don't see anything wrong with it. And if I get the urge to flash something I just flash my n7.

Absolutely, it's a very smooth phone. And like broons said, there are small things that bug me. I would like to root for tasker, hotspot/tether, custom notifications bar (i really dislike the sense skinned not bar), power on with volume, remve gps icon, and remove the bloat completely. Those are what I would do instantly, with only root. But of course, the main reason would be to flash roms and take a crack at the source myself
Is there currently a team actively working on the 2.04 unlock?

Guys If you want an exploit email and twitter at HTC and HTCDEV to release the 2.04 kernel source which they are LEGALLY required to do and have no done so yet. There is seriously a likely exploit there.
I'd stick with the DNA...cm 10.1 is almost done and if devs can't figure out a root method...which i think they will...you can send it off to get s-off for like $40...its not impossible to get s-off
Current team says it is not likely. Kernel source may help.

The first thing I do is ROOT when I get a phone. However I can't on the DNA b/c I'm also on 2.04. I'm actually with AT&T using the DNA. I don't have LTE, and MMS only works using GoSMS which I don't really care for. Even with the MMS issue, no LTE, and no ROOT, this phone is still worth it. If I was an actual VZW subscriber, this would be the phone to have for sure.
I want ROOT to remove the horrid software install popups when connecting by usb and to wifi tether. Other than that, the stock rom is pretty smooth. The hardware is just too BEAST to pass up. I'm coming from the OneX which was a great phone as well, but the DNA runs circles around the OneX.

I have had numerous Moto phones and the Razr Maxx HD was a big disappointment for me; and I tried hard to love that thing. 32 GB of memory and a battery like no other, but they skimped out by only including 1 GB of RAM which gave me redraw after redraw. It reminded me of my old Charge. The DNA is by far the best stock Android phone I've ever had (15 and counting). If you don't like Sense, then just throw Nova or something similar on top. I would never own a Samsung phone again, but if you're okay with the plastic, crappy feel, the S3 probably has the easiest phone to root and the most custom ROM's.
If you guys want any hope of an exploit, Twitter and email HTC and htcdev to release the kernel source! They are violating the gpl by not doing that.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
Had the Razr as well and loved it but the 1gb of RAM was the problem. Had they put 2gb in the HD's, right now, they would be owning market.
The DNA is amazing even unrooted. Power toggles and Nova make this phone completely unique and i haven't even played with ADW and other launchers. Just crazy fast and lightning quick.

Thinking about getting DNA, asking advice

Hey, I have a Moto Bionic right now, and time has finally slowed it down. Considering buying the DNA off contract and I'd like to know the ups and downs of the phone. I have Google Streaming Service and unlimited Data, so I won't be bothered by the lack of SD expansion.
Is the non-removable battery a problem? Can the battery be replaced if you peel the phone apart? (like an iPhone)
How stable are the ROMS?
How is the sound quality? I don't like beats headphones, but I assume this phone had more attention focused on the DAC than my current phone.
Tell me the common gripes about this phone, if you don't mind, so I can decide if any are a deal breaker.
Thanks in advance!
Roms are stable the battery Idk if it can be replace but posible mabe. The batery life is pretty decent as long as you know what to do to save the battery when its not in use. the screen is great and recently got great with crpalmers kernal with the color fix or update where they took out a code.

Hey, I didn't specify but I won't be buying full priced but rather used. So financially, the One would be twice the price. Definitely an awesome phone, though.
Color fix noted, waiting to hear more about any quirks.
Get the phone. I came from a bionic as well. Its so much better of a phone.
I was going to wait for the One but decided to get the DNA now since the bootloader was unlocked. I am running the NOS rom which is Sense 5. The screen is great and for me the 5 inch screen may be the best screen size after going from Gnex>S3>Note2>RAZR Maxx>S3>DNA. I thought the battery would be th achilies heel, but its actually pretty good. My test is usually letting it sit overnight on wifi (its the constant I can do with any phone) and see how much battery is lost. In my case it was around 5-8% over a 8 or so hour night. <1% drain per hour is pretty good in my book. Also I got 2 nokia DT900 wireless plates, one for work and one for home. So I just set it down on the plate and pick it up with more battery.
I was at the point wondering if I should lose my unlimited and jump on the One this summer, pay full price for the One (didn't want to do that), or jump on a DNA, keep my unlimited and have the same Sense 5 experience.
The sound is pretty good, I just listen to podcasts but there is a difference between beats on an off, beats one the sound fuller. And this is over a BT headphones.
OK, are there any good ROMs that attempt a Nexus-like pure Android Experience?
I like Sense a lot, I would want to try both.
Anyone know if the battery can be changed so that when the fold gets older, it can be replaced?
Really if you just change out the launcher, you can get a mostly Nexus experience except for the notification pulldown, settings, and lock screen. But you still get the Beats and stuff. I believe there are some CM 10.1 roms for a pure AOSP experience. But I do think there are some Sense roms that allow you to customize to remove some Sense stuff. Look at the ROMs OP and see the options and screenshots.
I am not sure about the battery. But there was a company offering JTag S-Off before the bootloader unlocks that I think required a opening of the device. So I assume it can be done, not sure where you would source a new battery. But by the time the battery loses life maybe 1-2 years, you can buy a used DNA2 or One for cheap.

As everyone has mentioned the phone is phenomenal. I've been through the Droid X, Thunderbolt, Razr Maxx, and Gnex. The DNA blows every single one of them out of the water. Once you play around with your settings you can get nice battery life. My battery stats for today are 3:02:43 Screen on time 22% battery left after 16 hours. That's pretty stellar in my book. I just got Lux today which I need to play around with but I'm pretty sure I should be pushing 4-5 hours screen on time by the time I have everything said and done.
Definitely look into getting Tasker, Lux, and Greenify for your battery saving needs. I use tasker to control my wifi/4g data so that I automatically use WiFi wherever applicable and 4g at all other times. Lux is an auto-brightness tool of amazingness I just picked up, and Greenify hibernates your apps so they don't leech your battery in the background.
I think you'll fall in love with the phone if you decide to get it.

the only real down of the phone is that there's no micro sd slot. i know some people were worried about the battery life(myself included), but this phone's battery life is pretty decent considering the screen size. everything runs so smooth on it even on stock. additionally, the phone doesn't seem to ever overheat like every other 4g-lte phone i've owned. for instance, my last htc phone(rezound) used to overheat like crazy. it would be really bad when downloading a torrent via adownloader new... i'd have to occasionally put the phone in the freezer for 5 - 10 min to cool it down. this dna doesn't do that at all.
Is the bootloader on the DNA still unlockable? Say if I bought one brand new today, could I still unlock the bootloader? The most recent info I can find is from a thread that was locked quite awhile ago.

We upgraded from Droid 3s to DNAs when Verizon offered them free a few weeks back. Improvements all around, including battery. My wife stays stock, I tinker, though I'm trying to keep it OTA updatable (for now). In addition to using Nova Launcher or similar, Holo Locker helps with the Nexus look.
Edit: FYI Best Buy just ran a commercial - DNAs free with two year contract.

I'd highly recommend Carbon Rom if you wanted a pure nexus experience. As for the phone itself it has a decent battery and a beautiful screen, but I must advise getting a good case as the screen is glass and will shatter if you drop it on a corner unfortunately I am speaking from experience.
