[Q] Is the OTA 2.04 Unlock likely? - HTC Droid DNA

I just grabbed this phone from Verizon, since the dev community is small compared to my other 2 options (Razr HD Maxx and Galaxy S3), however, with this new pesky 2.04 OTA that came pre-installed on my DNA, it seems like the community is currently at a halt.
I have approx 10 more days to return my DNA and get a second choice (Razr or Galaxy), but the hardware is really holding me to the DNA. I don't care much for Sense, and I've always been a motorola fan, however I also love to dev and mess with my phones. So, how likely is this 2.04 unlock? Or should I just go ahead and switch phones? Both the S3 and Razr have great dev communities. S3 has 2gb ram while the Razr has 1gb ram BUT has that amazing battery.
What should I do? I'm so indecisive right now and it's killing me!

I wouldn't buy a phone based on what might happen in the future. If nothing else, you could always sell it and buy one unlocked and s off.
The S3 is decent although old and I suspect dev support is on the downhill slope. I'm personally not a fan of the Razr. If it was my choice to make I'd keep the DNA or sell it and get one unlocked, or get a Note 2 to hold me over until Verizon gets the next HTC. The DNA 2 or One Variant.

why not take it back to the store and swap it out instead? Just don't let the store reps update your software. I never let them do anything more then activate my sim card

Guess its a good thing the woman that sold me mine was not familiar with smartphones, I had to show her how to take out the SIM tray. I declined the update so I could familiarize myself to sense coming from the razr maxx

You think the phone was updated and didn't just come already preloaded with the new software? I don't remember having to sit through any update, she simply opened it, popped in the sim card, and had me log into my gmail. If that's the case, then I might try that route.

I came from the Maxx and think the DNA is so much more of a phone that I live we the battery size. I got to say that there is something innate to flashaholics that we must have the latest version and once we have it, we want to newest version. In the end, they all still do the same damn thing. We risk bricking, endless hours of trying to fix something we may have screwed up in flashing variants and trying every rom out there and trying again and again. The DNA is a great phone as is. You will always want the next phone regardless so make a decision based on the phone in your hand not what it may be like once you get rooted and start the insanity again of trying to make it better. You can deactivate bloat, hid things in app drawer, it is still blazing fast, a portable battery hub solves the battery issue better than having to plug in everywhere, the Qi pad is sweet, still fits in jean pockets and it has a beautiful screen.

Why do you have to point out the amazingness of this phone and make my decision even harder!? I do agree with you though. The DNA has amazing more-than-currently-needed hardware, and that's really what's making my decision so hard. I have faith in the unlock, and plenty of patience, but it's hard being a developer and not being able to dev. I hate being restricted. I'm almost to the point of getting the Note II, but the phablet size is keeping me away for now.
Thanks for the input!

I would say the DNA is definitely worth it even without root/unlock.

Before the update came out I didn't root or unlock because I think phone is amazing on a stock rom. HTC really did a nice job. Although once it stops getting otas I will unlock root and put a custom rom and kernel but until then I'm just staying on stock. I don't see anything wrong with it. And if I get the urge to flash something I just flash my n7.

I am rooted and unlocked but the main reason I did it was to remap to recents button to long press menu just go get rid of the black menu bar.
Other than that I was very happy with stock.

Absolutely, it's a very smooth phone. And like broons said, there are small things that bug me. I would like to root for tasker, hotspot/tether, custom notifications bar (i really dislike the sense skinned not bar), power on with volume, remve gps icon, and remove the bloat completely. Those are what I would do instantly, with only root. But of course, the main reason would be to flash roms and take a crack at the source myself
Is there currently a team actively working on the 2.04 unlock?

Guys If you want an exploit email and twitter at HTC and HTCDEV to release the 2.04 kernel source which they are LEGALLY required to do and have no done so yet. There is seriously a likely exploit there.

I'd stick with the DNA...cm 10.1 is almost done and if devs can't figure out a root method...which i think they will...you can send it off to get s-off for like $40...its not impossible to get s-off

Current team says it is not likely. Kernel source may help.

The first thing I do is ROOT when I get a phone. However I can't on the DNA b/c I'm also on 2.04. I'm actually with AT&T using the DNA. I don't have LTE, and MMS only works using GoSMS which I don't really care for. Even with the MMS issue, no LTE, and no ROOT, this phone is still worth it. If I was an actual VZW subscriber, this would be the phone to have for sure.
I want ROOT to remove the horrid software install popups when connecting by usb and to wifi tether. Other than that, the stock rom is pretty smooth. The hardware is just too BEAST to pass up. I'm coming from the OneX which was a great phone as well, but the DNA runs circles around the OneX.

I have had numerous Moto phones and the Razr Maxx HD was a big disappointment for me; and I tried hard to love that thing. 32 GB of memory and a battery like no other, but they skimped out by only including 1 GB of RAM which gave me redraw after redraw. It reminded me of my old Charge. The DNA is by far the best stock Android phone I've ever had (15 and counting). If you don't like Sense, then just throw Nova or something similar on top. I would never own a Samsung phone again, but if you're okay with the plastic, crappy feel, the S3 probably has the easiest phone to root and the most custom ROM's.

If you guys want any hope of an exploit, Twitter and email HTC and htcdev to release the kernel source! They are violating the gpl by not doing that.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app

Had the Razr as well and loved it but the 1gb of RAM was the problem. Had they put 2gb in the HD's, right now, they would be owning market.
The DNA is amazing even unrooted. Power toggles and Nova make this phone completely unique and i haven't even played with ADW and other launchers. Just crazy fast and lightning quick.

Thinking about going to the Rezound. question..

Im coming from the HTC evo from sprint. Im on my way over to Verizon. Im interested in both the Rezound and the nexus...
Is there a reason to choose the REzound over the nexus? It doesnt seem like the Rezound has full root/s-off etc etc right? Is it a matter of time, or do they have this thing locked down?
Rezound have radio lock thats all
Rezound is faster and has alotttt stronger signal. Basically, HTC owns samsung
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
I was all about the nexus but after being burned so often by buying and trying to justify my purchase waited and was about to buy a rezound till I got it as a replacement and its awesome. I love this phone so far. Great camera, It's really quick, screen is amazing and its the perfect size
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
I came from the EVO as well. It was this or nexus, I chose this for the better camera and beats, which I can't go without now. Plus the free headphones. Only selling point of the nexus is ics but a senseless Rom gives a close experience which should get better in time. Plus sense 3.6 is cool and miui is in progress as well as sense 4.0
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
Came from Evo 4G on Sprint as well. Went through 2 Nexus's before giving up and getting the Rezound. Signal and call quality on the Nexus was horrendous. I would hear about every third word the caller was saying which made for some pretty interesting conversations.
The ONLY advantage to the Nexus is the ease of "tweaking" it but I un-locked, flashed a recovery, and flashed a rooted ICS Rom on my Rezound in about 10 minutes.
Get the Rezound ... NO BRAINER
IMHO
Edit: BTW ... The return rate of the Nexus is upwards of 20% according to my Verizon Rep. She told me she wished they would pull it off the market.
I came on over from the Evo 3d and I love the Rezound and coverage so much I've yet to root it. This phone has almost cured my flashism. Though I'm on vacation this week, I might get in on the rooting and madness on this side of town soon.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
Thanks guys.. Im hesistant with the Nexus because IVe heard about samsung not rolling out updates etc etc as fast as they should.
Rezound vs GNex
I poured over this decision back in December. I opted for the rezound because it has an sd card slot and the GNex doesn't. The camera and processor are also superior. I have mine OC's to 1.8 GHz. It is saddled with s-on though. HTC allows users to unlock the bootloader but we cannot flash radios and kernels directly via recovery. It must be done in the bootloader or via fastboot. Not the end of the world but not as easy as an s-off device. This nut seems to be a tough one to crack too. A few devs have been at it since December but no joy
Once we get cm9 the nexus will be a thing of the past.

What do you mean by that?
editeD: lolwut I got it now haha fail.
Look, I'm not expert by any means, but I feel I need to chime in. I have owned both phones. The Nexus was probably the sweetest phone I thought I ever had.. Everything seemed to work flawlessly. After a few days I constantly had problems with the Battery, Signal strength and SOUND. Let me explain. ICS was awesome IMO. It worked great and was a really nice change. But that was the only thing that was nice on it. The roms that are coming out now for the Rezound by far make this the best phone I've ever owned. Speed, picture, ICS and I personally like Sense. SO for me to give anyone advice it would easily be GO REZOUND!!
BTW.. Ask this question in the Nexus forum, and I guarantee you'll get a different response. So basically, you need to go in the store, and give yourself 20 minutes to mess around with both phones. Just keep in mind that Samsung has a reputation as having terrible radios. Be sure to listen to the sound on both. And take a look at the resolution and clarity.. A few youtube videos should do it for ya! ALSO, the fact that you get a nice set of ear phones.
I just got the rezound last week and love it. I'm coming from a sensation 4g this is a lot better phone than that is. Plus now we have an ics leak that your phone doesn't have to be rooted is sweet. And when the official ota drops you can still update

Don't think. Just buy a rezound.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
I faced the same decision, and I went for the Rezound. The camera, reception, and overall build quality of this phone is better than that of the Nexus. I really don't like Sense, and that almost made me go for the Nexus, but software is upgradable and hardware isn't. I'm currently running a senseless ROM (XTreme's), which isn't AOSP, but it's close. It seems like there is being progress with ROMs completely lacking sense (MIUI is being worked on and apparently has RIL in-tact), and once CM9 gets its RIL issues fixed, my phone will feel complete. Even without that, I am very happy with this phone. The screen is amazing, even when compared to a Samsung device (Nexus). The battery life isn't great, but it is an LTE device... I never get signal drops, and I'm always on 4G.
okay well with that being said, what do you guys loose not having s-off?

Not much. It makes it more difficult to flash kernels, but it is still relatively easy using adb or just your phone. You can't flash radios (well at least without being relocked), which I think is the major downside of s-off. Also, unlocking through the HTCDev method won't let you go back to complete factory stock (without the bootloader saying relocked), so if Verizon happened to check, they can see that you MAY have voided PARTS of your warranty (not a big deal).
hmm Seems like its too much bull**** to deal with...

It's really not that bad. Choose the phone you want to go with, but don't let that sway you too much. We may not have as many developers and ROMs as the Nexus, but we have some really great devs. And flashing ROMs and kernels really doesn't take noticeably longer without s-off, and becomes second nature
If you want stock ICS go Nexus.
If you want better screen, eventual Sense ICS (AOSP probably won't be possible until we can get s-off I think), and removable SD card go Rezound.
I've been a stock Android fan since the original Droid, but I've really grown to like Sense and Sense 4.0 looks even better. I do want an eventual AOSP.

Good Bye Amaze after 30 Days

After 30 days having 2 new amaze 4g, I am leaving HTC for good.
THis phone has been a horrible experience. 2 new phones bought and in a month I went thru 7 phones, that is unacceptable.
we got 2 phones,1st. one died the first day and was exchanged for a new one, this one started overheating after 15 days, replacement from TMobile, came with banding on the screen even whith the phone off out of the box.
Second one, worked for like 2 weeks, gps died. Replacement from TMobile, came also with banding on the screen also out of the box.
I have issues with the WiFi in all of them, taken too long to connect or disconnect automatically when signal was lost. GPS not too reliable, overheats after 30 minutes and freezes.
Called HTC,and the Customer Service lady, said she was looking to get the phone but too many issues with it. Back covers (part of the issue probably) are in back order, and TMo TEch had no idea about the issue with the back covers.
It took me to email TMo executives to get another phone similar (Galaxy SII or SIII,or HTC One S, as far as I paid the difference, what I was willing to do, and even offer to Customer retention managers to do so) (TMo customer service would only exchange after days of fighting for a Exibit 2)
Finally, Multitask in Sense is unreliable at best, and the changes made to comply with Apple's ban, have made the phone really a poor choice.
Good luck guys, but i believe this phone is a lemon........ (And I am not a newbie in Android)

Yes sir, had quite a few plus features over the tmo software, much smoother, no bloatware, no app open restrictions (you can tap links, phone numbers, etc from anywhere like fb or the browser and it opens the corresponding app unlike the browser only restriction on tmo), only downside to using the telus software is that you have no wifi calling, but that doesn't even work properly on the tmo version, so it never bugged me one bit. You have to be super cid to do this though, so s-off is required, not sure if you can flash the zip I made or not, but I think a clean install to begin with is a better idea.

Very Satisfied (or lucky) w Amaze Tmobil
Being a relative newb to Android. I must say I have had very few hardware issue with this handset.
1. battery draw is easy enough to compensate, especially with a backup battery.
2. BT weak signal (much better with ICS)
3. An occasional black screen after a lengthy phone call. (since NRG stock look was installed) which is very seldom.
Wifi calling works well. Phone is snappy, camera is very good for a phone.
Currently rooted w/NRG - Stock look
I must say the Telus route sounds interesting.

The Droid Incredible 4G LTE is a great phone. It's the perfect form factor at only 4 inches with a nice-sized and nice-looking display. 1GB of RAM is the current standard, which it has, and it supports microSD cards, which is no longer the standard but should still be. It runs Ice Cream Sandwich stock, and we're about to have S-OFF so we can install anything we want on it. I never lose connection to the network, and Wi-Fi works great at a decent range. There's nothing currently available that I would take over this phone.

I would not say it is outdated. However, how much you like it will depend on what you want in a phone. I bought the Dinc4g on release day and with the exception for no root (yet), I am happy with it.
The rest of my family have the Rezound. This phone is smoother, faster and smaller. All plusses for me. I want the 4" screen. They like the Rezound's bigger screen, but their battery life is awful.
With root right around the corner, this phone promises to be even better.

Mine should be here tomorrow so that was a very fitting post. I'm coming from the Incredible 2.
I absolutely love mine. You'll be happy to get it!

I went from a T-Bolt on VZW, to Sensation on TMOus and back to a DINC4 on VZW.
I was scared about speed and battery coming from those two phones.
Within a few days that was laid to rest.
Even with the factory bloat, it is faster and the battery lasts longer.
I too, coming from two prior 4.3 inch screen phones, like this form factor better than it's larger counterparts.
Very, very happy we made the switch.
Excited about S-Off, but this phone is a great device for me. I only want S-OFF to remove bloatware to be honest...and to get rid of the WiFi Nag.
Otherwise, out of the box this phone's a winner.

Agree with you. A whole lot of the smartphone community does not know what they are missing when it comes to the 4g3. It's a secret success. Root and s-off will be a nice bonus if it comes to pass.

I swear I was gonna write that when I read that post. Not if, when!
Lol! I agree with all the comments. Great phone. Battery life is ok. Aside from bloatware and wifi symbol in your face, the only other slightly down side is lacking range of cases but Otterbox and me became friends on this model so I can't complain. I do like to accessorize from time to time but what I have now will have to do.

You can disable almost all the bloat non-rooted....
Essentially its exactly like freezing in titanium backup except its a feature of stock android now. Very cool.

I too came from the Rezound as I sold mine, then bought this phone on my two year contract.
I love the size of this phone, it's perfect, IMO.
The INC2 is the same size 4', but this phone is more of a candy bar shape, much like the INC1, which I prefer.
As much as I feel it may be weird not being able to pull the battery when needed, I wish that this phone was made like the One Series phones, specifically the OneS, I love the build quality on the One S.
The Inc4 I use with no case and no screen protector and I don't feel nervous with it so it is built pretty nice, but IMO the INC2 is a bit more solid, especially the away the back door was on the INC2, on the INC4 it's pretty easy and squeaks a bit due to this. Nothing that was going to keep me from buying this phone though
I'll be on this phone for two years. I'll most likely end up using my brothers upgrade for the Incredible DIX and let him take my next upgrade. but I'll be on the Inc4 mainly even so as I couldn't use a 5' phone for a daily, it'll pretty much be my tablet, lmao.

Pursue the DNA

I switched to Verizon a week ago from sprint and a nexus s 4g. I picked the RAZR M because sprint wouldn't repair a faulty refurb they sent me so I needed a phone. The RAZR m was cheap and seemed really solid. In fact its a great phone. However I am of the mindset if you're on Verizon and have the funds go for the DNA. Since Verizon extended their return policy I can use Christmas money and return this. My only concerns with the DNA are
1. Battery life -my RAZR m which gets great life has almost the same size battery.
2. Support -moto is owned by Google and updates are being churned out fast, HTC however has a history of not supporting. The DNA is future proof spec wise but will HTC support.
3. Build quality- after switching to moto build quality has become important. Kevlar back aluminum body etc. Are all present in my "mid range" phone
4. Roms -with my RAZR I've excepted lack of ROMs and dev support, but almost stock makes this acceptable. Sense however is tolerable, but heavy. I could deal with it but would look to replace it later with AOSP
5. Memory-7 the 8gb isn't cutting it , I need the 16gb.
Can anyone who has a DNA or experience with one speak on these? Thanks
Sent from my RAZR M using xda app-developers app
Memory is actually 11gb
Sent from my HTC Droid DNA
After you root the DNA and flash a new ROM you'll have about 11 gigs for whatever your needs. Many users are reporting that they are not having problems with the battery life, so I think you'll find it acceptable. The DNA has top notch build quality--most HTC phones do. Just go to a Verizon store and check it out. You'll be pleasantly surprised. As far as getting AOSP is concerned, I wouldn't hold your breath just yet. It could happen down the road
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
1. Battery life is much better than most reviews say. will last me more than the whole day. Especially with cubed kernel
2. Roms will cover updates
3. the build quality on this phone is amazing! i love the feel of it
5. There's already a few good Roms on the phone, and from what i can see the devs are very talented and will bring lots more roms to this phone!
6. Memory, this phone is advertised with 16 gigs. Stock its 11 gigs available. But once you debloat it becomes closer to the 16 gig mark
I hope HTC doesn't skip us out of future upgrade this phone is to beast to do that.
sent from my beastly powered DNA using Tapatalk 2
Thanks y'all sound confident and happy with your devices. I'll leave the thread open in case any other experts want to chime in. I think I'll collect my earnings for Christmas, then gauge from there . If I have the difference I'll pull the trigger, if not oh well It sounds extremely pleasing to own.
Sense is a lot less resource hungry than what it was. Couple that with 2gb of RAM and a quad core, you're not going to get lag.
The build quality of the DNA is amazing. It as a very solid feel and is definitely durable.
In all honesty the battery is nowhere near as bad as some people make it out to be. sure, it doesn't get the maxx life but its a 2,020mAh and given that it uses a 5" 1080p screen the battery life "fits." even if HTC doesn't update often the developers will certainly pick up the slack.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
This phone is solid as they come in build quality, love the solid feel of it in my hand...that's what she said.
I've had a bad experience with motorola and updates. The photon 4g for sprint is still stuck on gingerbread and will never be updated passed that. The phone was on a list to get ics but moto canned it.

Moto sucks I had the razr and hated that damn phone.and it took forever to get ics.moto r very slow on updates
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
Yea I'm aware of moto's ****ty history with updates and with lock bootloaders that puts you @ verizon's mercy. But HTC is pretty bad as well. t's just that the Dev community is so exciting for the DNA it won't be an issue. With my razr M however I have practically no reason to visit XDA anymore lol. This is a reason for me contemplating the switch, the deep community behind it. Not Nexus S deep, but enough to satisfy.
Great phone
I won my phone thanks to HTC's ambassador program (you can read about it on htcsource dot com) and I love it! Today was a good testament to the battery as I was out shopping with my wife most of the day and am about to finally plug it in. My previous phone was a One S so I was somewhat already used to the limited amount of storage, but I do think to myself sometimes that 32GB is a much amount. I would love to carry more music since I don't have the luxury of free WiFi at work. The storage had yet to be a deal breaker for me, because there are so many other perks to this phone. I absolutely love the possibilities with NFC and the screen size is freaking awesome to look at.
I say go for it!
After only having Moto smartphones for the last few years, I've never experienced HTC. How are they with their updates?
I know with Moto the updates were taking ages, but looking back it was a little fun trying this and that to get things to work. I forget the saying, but it's something about enjoying the trip more than getting to the destination.

if you have a verizon phone, your updates will take ages, period. moto, htc, samsung, doesn't matter. verizon is who dictates when the updates go out, and they're ALWAYS last.
I got to hold and play with a DNA the other day and man does it feel nice in hand. Top notch build quality, super fast and that screen is amazing. Makes me jealous I'm not due for an up grade but the DNA will definitely get more support and roms than the RAZR simply because moto is so hell bent on locking down their devices

Ya, that's what I'm afraid of because this is a Verizon phone.
Well, once someone figures out our s-on problem we will have the hardware to handle anything.

honestly though, coming from a guy who roots everything, i'm really enjoying the phone stock. i wihs i were rooted so that i could remove the wifi nag and make the recent apps button into a menu button, but other than that, this thing rocks stock.

Just a quick fyi to help you enjoy stock better. Just long press the wifi notif and press app info then just force stop it. The annoying notif will be gone til you reboot.
The rommer in me is not satisfied.

Happy With the G

I got my G in yesterday. I replaced my atrix with cm10. I really dont miss cm10 either. I did root this phone so I could install titanium, remove bloat and install my old apps. I was wondering if there is some way to add weather to the lock screen. One issue I did have happen, it shut off completely one time, no button pushing revived it, I ended up plugging it to power and it responded. I see that might be an issue at some point, you cant remove the battery, so that makes me a little leary of unlocking or putting a new rom on, if it stuffs I cant turn it off
Easy process. And if you double get in a bind it may be easier for you to fix.

Dude did you replace an atrix 4g with the LGOG? ...I DID THE SAME THING! Man I love this phone ^.^ my atrix was a tough cookie though.
Sent from my LG-E970 using Tapatalk 2
I also upgraded from the original atrix. Very happy with the performance of this phone. I do miss a couple of things from the atrix though: better battery life, ability to use standard wifi tethering and the customizable car dock app.

I have to admit, when the news came out earlier that the Nexus 4 is back in stock I briefly considered throwing my Optimus up on Swappa/Craigslist/whatever and getting one.
Ultimately, I'm perfectly happy with the G. Especially now that we have JB source and the devs can go crazy with it, I'm hoping we're not too far away from a CM or a true AOSP ROM. Heck, I'll probably be perfectly happy with the JB ROM we have already once the storage issue gets fixed, as the camera isn't really all that important to me. Sure, it's nice to have, but I've got a dedicated camera for when I want to do serious photography.
With our JB ROM, what's the real difference between the Optimus G and the Nexus 4 aside from the obvious not having to go through AT&T for updates? If we never get Key Lime Pie or anything official from AT&T period (even the JB OTA), my feelings might change, but for a device that people say has lacking dev support it doesn't seem all that bad.
Heck, knowing how much I like flashing ROMS having only a few of them may be better for my sanity
Former atrix user here too. Captivate-Atrix-i777Sii-LGOG. Atrix and LGOG win all the candy for battery life.

i really wanted to use my atrix forever, but it has a failing digitizer, the headphone jack quit working.
I switched from the Note 2 to the G and I can tell you the G is far more responsive and quick in day to day use. It's like night and day.

I love my Atrix but I found out that CM10 and Jokersax is a little too buggy for normal use - might just be me though. I used the epinter and it worked great but my battery was instant dead all the time (even with tweaks and extended battery )
I love seeing all these former Atrix users picking up the LGOG and loving it! My only concern is the battery life since I am a heavy user. Super heavy I am almost always on it even at home. I have been playing with the floor model at my job and really cannot see any faults besides the battery but LG and other OEM users claim that the "eco-mode" does the trick in conserving the battery. The floor model does not have an active sim and I do not see a way to disable LTE and only have HSPA+.
The battery issue and hacks seems to be an issue I foresee as well but I guess we would just need to be lucky and hope that the hard reset works aka press all buttons at once and pray.

+1 for former Atrix
It's great to see that a ton of Atrix users made it to the LGOG. Even better that Noattach made the jump with us!
So, has anybody tried to get the lapdock working with the LGOG yet? I'll be getting an MHL adapter soon, but I only expect video, as the USB speakers in the dock don't seem to have support outside of the Atrix. It would be awesome if there were some way to get the keyboard, trackpad, and USB ports on the dock to talk with the phone. Anybody have any ideas?
