Basic questions from a noob. - HTC Desire X

Hello guys,
I've started reading about roms, flashing, customs roms, recovery images, mods and so on since I got my first android phone a few days ago, but my had is gonna explode very soon. There are so much information, tutorials, devices, wikis. New questions are coming up all the time. So I am starting this thread to ask some noob questions.
The first thing is about RUU. I really can't understand the whole concept. I receive my updates OTA. From where you get this RUU's. In this threadhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32073156 in the first few pages people are talking about porting the RUU. What do you mean by that. I understand that RUU's are connected to CID, my phone is not branded or simlocked. But somewhere on the threads I read that the only available RUU is for Europe, but doesn't include Poland. I am also from Eastern Europe - Bulgaria. I've understood how to backup and flash my system.img, but before I repace the stock recovery.img do I need to back it up too, and how?
I'll be really grateful if someone finds the time to answer my questions. If not, please do not delete the thread because in the mean time I am reading stuff, and maybe I'll find the answers but knew questions will arise
And the end, I am sorry for my bad English.
P.S What the hell is ProtoU? A nickname for Desire X?

Well, I can't answer all of your questions but can point you to some things.
RUU is Rom Update Utility, it is used to flash stock operating system to phone. It's a different type from OTA cause OTA usually only update some of the existing system files while RUU clears all partition of the phone and installs a fresh and clean OS to it. Also, OTA is performed directly from the phone, while RUU uses PC as a tool for it. Some RUUs can be obtained directly from htcdev site while most of them are leaked files obtained from different carriers.
If you're still in the position to don't know the difference between stock and custom recovery, what system partitions exist on your phone and also what backup of system means, I suggest you to read more and when you fully understand all that it's time to start rooting, flashing and playing with your phone in a way that can cause a permanent damage to it.
To know if you're compatible with RUU that can be obtained for our phone download app called Android Assistant from Play Store, go to tab Tools, choose a tool called System Info and the first info is about your OS version.
In my signature you have a link (How it works) with explanation how HTC Desire and Nexus One work, it's partly similar to our phone with a few difference, but basics are the same.
I hope I helped.
P.S. Proto U is a codename for HTC Desire X, cause every android phone has it. So Desire is Bravo, Desire S is Saga, Nexus One is Passion, Nexus S is Crespo, Incredible S is Vivo, One S is Ville... You can google it.

Before I get into detail of what I need help with understanding. I also want to make clear why i started this thread. Its for the special idiots like myself that just cant seem to connect the dots when it comes to their specific build. I'm asking is there anybody willing to help me understand the the connections between the steps that are needed to be taken when Updating your phone to S-off, and/or this and that leak or whatever. I been reading all day. And there's great info out there just not a "connect the dots" type of explanation. If here is anybody willing to help me take the specific steps that my rezound specific build requires, please let me know. If there is a problem with me starting this thread then i guess it needs to be deleted.

Not just S-off but also what other things i needs to do and in what order. I also wouldnt mind a "why" explanation, because if i can understand why then i will probably stop asking "How?"

I'm not understanding what you're confused about... it almost sounds as though you want somebody to explain everything to you. What are you trying to accomplish? Maybe then I'll be able to help you figure it out.

Thanks for the reply. Well its not to explain everything its more to explain what one thing has to do with another. Well i attached some images of what my build currently is and here is the info of what my fastboot screen says;

Im good with computers but phones is like another language.lol. I read the threads for that new rom and for the All in one S-off kit. But im not sure what my specific device build requires me to do first so that im on the right path to the upgrade. So basically i need some "for dummies" explanation to rid me of my confusion.

I would try to S-off first. You are currently on early ICS Firmware. You can't go back to GB firmware while S-on so that is not an option. I didn't use the S-off toolkit for S-off, but I used an earlier all in one to get rooted and flash recoveries. A member just asked about S-off yesterday, go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768938 and read about it. There are several threads on various aspects of S-off, just read through them. Come back with specific questions.
Use an old SD card if you have one. DON'T unlock the phone again.
When you are S-off, go ahead and flash AmonRA, and then your new ROM.

Toolkit Ideas

So I made the base of my toolkit. Just waiting on a recovery to finish it. Now I want some ideas to add/implement/make it better.
Many people know that I make toolkits for basically every new HTC phone. Here is the sample for the One X+ at the moment.

Things I will NOT add.
- Stock/Custom Kernels
- Remove Root
- Probably more that I forgot
Many people flashed kernels and had no idea on how to use it and soft-bricked their phones.
Root can be removed with the SuperSU app from my toolkit.
So give reasonable recommendations and I will see what I can do!
Hey hasoon,
under "kernel" maybe "fastboot erase cache" as it comes hand after flashing boot.img (or directly in flash command for boot.img, if it's not already there)
and eventually "adb logcat -d >log.txt" under "command". Just for the lazy among us .

Would be happy to help but I don't know how flashing on the one x+ looks like as I don't have one(for the moment). But when I'll have passed the two weeks of stock rom limits testing and will flash another rom, then I'll see if they are improvements to do .

flashing is the same with all phones. download a ROM, transfer to your phone, go into recovery and flash. Rooting is the same for pretty much all modern HTC phones.

Running un-locked (S-off) 1X+
Android 4.1.1 - Sens 4+ (HTCExtension_Sense45_1)
SWnr 1.14.401.18
Kernel 3.1.10-g626c6aa
Thanx!!
I've used your toolkit, and I have to say it is pretty awesome work. However, as a first time user, I was rather confused with the UI, since it looked like there was no real 'order' labelled on each section, they aren't labelled like "Step 1, 2.. etc". Otherwise, the tool works great.

ROM downloader is another story. I don't have a centralized database with all the ROMs. I'm adding ADB Sideload as we speak!
I'm redoing my scripts to make this even better! It isn't easy and I probably won't have it done tonight. My goal is to have it done by tonight! However, I never had these features before, so I'm learning how to implement them without errors!
Here's a sample of the new addition!
Make some requests. I'll see what I can do!
Features will vary from device to device. The Amaze does not need an ADB Sideload feature. I'm using my Amaze source to mess with the new add ons.
This will not be done tonight. It's taking a lot of time to write this and it's giving me some errors.

[Q] Unlocked bootloader before upgrading firmware

Hello,
First thing I did when I got my phone before even playing with it was unlock the bootloader in fear I would not be able to later on (was so tempting to have the file and not actually unlock it, so i did). Afterwards I realized i did not run the OTA first and i am on firmware 1.26. I am seeing some blurbs here and there with people stating that in order to update the firmware you need to relock your bootloader and than do the OTA, it is not something that would get done by installing a new rom. I am new to HTC, had the nexus before this and everything could not have been easier. Just want to see if I am understanding this correctly, and would it be wise of me to relock my bootloader and than do the ota and than re unlock.
thanks for your help!

I'm fairly certain that isn't true. You just need to wait for someone to post the stock update "rom".
What is the most current firmware?
I did a software update and found nothing earlier today. I'm on 1.26.502.10
I remember seeing in the at&t forums that people were getting an OTA right off the bat, and in the international they have 1.29.401.12.. but maybe I am just being paranoid? I am on same firmware as you.
I'm not worried about it too much. I'm sure to have a custom ROM on this thing sooner rather than later.

I stand corrected. But the way I see it - if you unlocked the BL, you can back it up, then relock it, flash it, and then restore everything.

Why not flash a custom rom now from the international forum? Or just flash stock international rom?
Something in android revolution thread stated that if u have a different firmware version than what they are using u need to wipe data through aroma.. which i understand.. just was curious about running the most up to date firmware and such.. but if that's just for international. Than no biggie. Plan on flashing this afternoon!

[Q] What can we or can't we flash on our HTC Ones?

What stuff is compatible for our At&t htc one's from the regular htc one forum, and what stuff is incompatible.
Should I treat the bootloader unlocked version of att htc one as the same as the international, or should I only install stuff from the att htc one forum?

Is it safe to flash the firmware updates and is it necessary to say flash the latest version of arhd? I am running ARHD 7.0 with no issues at all, however I did flash the latest radio posted in the international forum, this was prior to learning that there is really no reason to at this point. Attempted to roll back to the backup of the original radio.img that I captured prior to upgrading (just for comparison purposes), however my build number still shows 1.29.401.12. My question is, is the build number derived from the ROM and the baseband version derived from the radio.img?
Correct.
got it, thanks. that explains why my baseband is not changing, its the same radio lol
Have any of you had any issues regarding flashing a rom? I have been reading some of the rom threads and it seems some have issues with Aroma or the rom's flash, however, then they cannot get their phones to boot. I want to flash one but I do not want to have any of those issues, as I already had a problem with recovery.
I sometimes have trouble with aroma with my HTC DNA, which is similar to the One. With me it sometimes freezes if I don't hold the device straight. Why... I have no idea. However, when this does happen I return to recovery via the pwr+vol and redo the process. It doesn't hurt anything for me just takes a bit longer. I've ordered the one and I'm definitely planning on flashing all types of stuff when out gets here Wednesday God willing. Just be sure to backup. That's saved me countless times.

Wait, when you select wipe data in order to flash arhd, doesn't it wipes firmware too?
I mean when you flash arhd that has latest firmware, your baseband still says 1.26 instead of 1.29?
How is that? Confused
So we can flash all the roms and kernels in there thread ?

Need complete updated guide to root and update Asus z580ca to newer Android version

Hello! Im new to XDA. I am needing a complete guide(s) so I can root my Asus z580ca table. I have been looking for weeks on various forums (including this one) and I have found some old guides that are very confusing. I am not new to rooting, jailbreaking or installing CFW on gaming units but trying to find a cohesive guide on this topic has been daunting. I have tried to root my Asus using KingRoot.apk but no luck. I get stuck on 1% when trying to root. My Asus is on Android 5.0. My goal is to root and update the Android firmware to a more recent version like Android 9 or 10. I appreciate any assistance I can get on this!!
To update Android it's not needed to get it rooted, but to find a
1. Custom Recovery suitable to your Asus device
2. Custom ROM suitable to device, what is to be flashed via Custom Recovery you found
Thanks for the reply! So how do I go about finding a custom recover suitable to my Asus device? How do I go about finding a custom ROM suitable for my Asus Device. Again I'm Looking for a guide on how to do this.

First, welcome here.
Second, I'm not sure why you have to bring all those statements "I'm not new to rooting, bla, bla" while to me, you're completely clueless, not even remotely can differentiate between rooting and updating your device. If you are really new to some area, take my advice, just don't try to show off. It's not a shame to confess that you don't know anything about it nor have any experience nor expertise in that area yet. Just be honest.
And now, for the answer to your question:
At this point I would just rather advice you to sell your device and move to another new one. Why? There's several reasons.
First reason is, unfortunately your device isn't popular enough to have a community to share knowledge or the works they've been working on. Why? Because a lot depends on that.
Before doing anything else, you'll need to unlock the bootloader of your device. If there's no official manual to do so from Asus, usually you'll be dependent on the community for help, unless you can find it the way yourself. Now, even if you have somewhat find a way to do it, there's second part.
The second part is: the device was released before so called "treble" mechanism implemented, thus giving you another hurdle. "Treble" allow you at least override just the system partition without messing with anything else. Newer devices that were released with Android 8 or above, cmiiw, naturally has it implemented. Why is this important? In case you can't any specific custom roms tailored for your device, "treble" accepts GSI which allows you to try another OS without other heavy duty stuff. Without treble support, literally you'll have to build a complete custom rom. I see Asus has provided the device kernel, so technically it's very possible to do so (although it might lack techpack, etc).
That's all covers about installing roms. Recovery isn't mandatory to install rom, unless your device lacks of fastboot (Samsung) or their fastboot borked (Oppo, Vivo).
Upgrading to another version is different topic. Rooting is also a very different topic.

A Custom Recovery ( TWRP ) obviously not available
Asus
This is the Team Win website and the official home of TWRP! Here you will find the list of officially supported devices and instructions for installing TWRP on those devices.
