nexus 10 fm radio - Nexus 10 General

it seems the nexus 10 has a broadcom BCM43241 chip which supports FM radio, i read on other forums that there might be issues as the chip might not be grounded with the headphones ground so some antenna connectivity issue, i tried spirit fm but doesn't seem to work, is there any development going on to enable the FM some how? can any1 confirm if it will ever be possible to make use of the FM in that chip using some custom kernel or software?

This is * definitely * not the answer you're looking for - but have you checked out the TuneIn Radio app? I KNOW it will only work when on wifi, not giving you the actual FM experience. But I've found that pretty much any terrestrial radio station I listen that has a simultaneous web broadcast, TuneIn Radio also carries it.
I'm sure I'm not telling you anything new, but you know..."just in case".

yes im aware of online radio stations but just trying to dig in whats the situation with nexus 10 as it has the supporting chip, no idea if its antenna is connected and also no idea if the drivers r available in the OS, i also emailed spirit fm developer today so lets hope he can help out coz it would be great to use FM directly rather than wifi which might not be available everywhere and also the device doesnt have 3g.
google if ur reading this, atleast make some external 3g dongle or put in support for same and also if there is a FM chip, then make use of it

i got the reply from mike reid
" No, no FM antenna pin connection. "
so i guess make this a sticky or so that officially nexus 10 will never support FM, in spite of it having the chip

Who is Mike Reid?
Also, people said before that the Nexus 4, although having a 4G chip (or LTE?), was not able to use it due to lack of connection to the chip (or lack of connection to an antenna). And now the Nexus 4 has 4G (or LTE) by some software mod.

he is the developer for spirit FM app, LTE is different coz the antenna for 3g is connected to same chip that has 3g as well as LTE so a mod could simply do that but FM is different, they might have simply never bothered with it but if some1 thinks he can solve this, well and good.
i wonder what they use the barometer chip for also and if it even works

some1 needs to be up the hardware and verify the antenna connectivity, all it would take is a connection from the chip to the headphone jack.
"chip has a specific FM 88-108 MHz antenna pin"

All I want for christmas is to be able to use what I paid for

I've been modifiying PDA phones for a while now but this is something I can't get over/should have expected from Sprint. GPS is present yet unusable on my Titan. I just now unlocked my titan and flashed to dcds 1.5.7/1.40.0 and I am hoping to be able to use the GPS with tomtom 6.
The thing that puzzles me is I read a post stating an indiviudal was using tomtom 6 on his mogul! how did he do it?

he must be using a bluetooth gps device
so for now there is no way out? Is there any revision of this phone (Alltell, etc.) that has GPS enabled for application use?
av0, let's set the record straight here for a moment.
The mogul uses new hardware- chips that haven't been seen inside of Windows Mobile devices before. These chips allow services that haven't been available before either, such as EVDO rev. A and possibly assisted GPS.
Now, these chips may be capable, and HTC may be able to write drivers for it, but Microsoft never released the proper modules to control and take advantage of them. So, in the case of Rev A, we're waiting for MS to update some of their code so that HTC can release a new firmware, which will then be distributed to Sprint, Alltel, VZ, etc...
But for now, we have to play the waiting game. It doesn't exist on ANY carrier just yet!
Now, the GPS is the same thing... this particular GPSOne chip is new to the windows mobile scene. It supports some pretty nifty modes, including real stand alone GPS with an assisted mode- IE, uses the tower triangulation to get an even faster fix, then switch over to standalone mode (as opposed to the traditional way which is currently found in some PPCs, in which getting the initial fix can take up to 5-10min). Its in the chip specs to do this, but as far as I know MS's GPS modules only support standalone GPS information (no assisted faster fix), and its only been a rumor that Sprint/HTC would actually take advantage of this capability anyway. Either way, the phone was released before Windows Mobile was ready to use these higher-end features. We're waiting for them to catch up.
In the mean time, they removed GPS from the advertising, and Rev A has always been "coming soon".
Sit back. The rest of the phone finally works great now (thanks to 2.17 ROM, and a lot of great custom roms based on it), so one thing at a time. This great phone is going to get even better soon!
Concerning GPS...
Our Titans have the chipset for it and according to this FCC document, some of us (excluding Sprint Moguls) may have the antenna as well.
Someone in this thread extracted an Italian version of Kaiser's GPS files which I installed one morning and after playing around with it for about an hour, I couldn't get anything going. My Titan is cradled next to a large window all day and by early afternoon, I noticed a GPS icon in my top bar. When I picked up the phone, it went away and I was never able to reproduce it. I have no idea if it means I was receiving a GPS signal, but I'm hoping developments in activating the Touch Dual's GPS could lead to a working solution for Titan.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Touch Dual have the same chipset as the Kaiser?
The Titan uses a slightly modified Qualcomm chip for CDMA, and as such it should not be any suprise that the drivers from the GSM chipset don't work.
I'm of the opinion that the GPS control part of the chips are not the same because of the way CDMA uses the Assisted part of AGPS. Trying to port drivers from another existing device is a fruitless effort as no one has yet written drivers for our particular chipset.
THEY ARE NOT THE SAME.
Just sit back and wait for Sprint or someone to release it first. Then we can start porting it to all the other devices with this chip.
good bit of info on this thread. thanks guys

** Correct.
if this new update from sprint/htc brings rev a and GPS, will that make it possible to enable the GPS on the verizon xv6800 (by flashing the rom or whatever it takes)
OMG the doors to the heavens above have opened.
I'm not even asking for that much! I just want the phone to not lockup and I want to hear my callers on bluetooth! This phone was so rushed out the door is shows bad.

Galaxy Player 3G antenna inside?

Hi all, i was reading that booklet that comes with the GALAXY Player and in there its talking about the potential radio hazards and it caught my attention that Samsung says this on page 2 of the booklet.
"Although GALAXY is not a cell phone, it can operate on the same network as cellphones and can use the same radio frequency signals to communicate with the network as a cell phone"
I was pretty impressed, and who knows maybe there really is a hidden 3g antenna in there. That would be awesome to develop a rom that would use the antenna.

There is a 0% chance of there being a 3G radio inside of the Samsung Galaxy Player. I can guarantee that; It's probably referring to the frequencies that Bluetooth and WiFi operate on perhaps.
Yeah, my guess is that it's talking about the fact that most cell phones have BT/Wifi now.
TBH that's just ****ty documentation, since BT/Wifi have far lower transmit power than 3G. Probably just lawyer paranoia there.
Cell Radio battery use?
I was just wondering what the cell radio in the SGS Wifi 5 was for? In my battery use I get a cell standby section which says 'Battery used by cell radio'. I'm just a bit confused by this because as far as I know the cell radio is for a 3G or similar network?

There isn't a cell radio in it. Pretty sure the "cell radio" stuff was just a part of android that wasn't removed for some reason.

[Q] FM Radio

Does Sony Xperia S have FM radio /not internet radio/? What is wrong with the manufacturers of the new devices? the FM radio is missing in Galaxy nexus, HTC one X etc., who knows why?

So the Xperia S may have FM, but as far as the others go: I think I have an inkling. In North America, the carriers are the customers of the manufacturers, not the end users.
I think they want to kill "old fashioned" over the air TV and FM radio. They want to sell expensive data plans. And Google is an Internet advertising company and would rather have you watching Youtube or listening to music bought from their own music service. Apple is the same; no FM in their phones.
And the manufacturers listen to the carriers, who are the real customers for phones in North America and some other places. FM is more common on the Internation versions of phones sold in Europe where people pay full price for phones and carriers don't control things.
There is an ongoing battle between content producers and carriers for the BIG money made advertising to all those people who spend hours every night watching TV or whatever. The producers (Hollywood, TV, RIAA etc) and providers (Google/Youtube etc) want the carriers to be dumb pipes.
The carriers/cablecos/sat TV cos want to control the content and charge us for the channel packages. And charge the producers/providers for the "privelege" or carrying their content.
I think it will be a titanic battle. Google TV (/Music etc) and Apple TV (etc) seem to be the main contenders. The industry may end up controlled in Silicon Valley instead of Hollywood etc.
So yeah, I think the crippling of FM chips in phones (they are there in many devices, just not connected !!), is just a small part of this battle.
Not sure that it is a really big selling point for future phones because definatly over here (UK) they are switching to digital by 2015 anyway so these FM radios will be largely pointless.
I see your point but no one is buying a phone now that they will still be using in 2015 so for the moment, FM is still a great feature.
I love FM, I think the quality is quite good and use it all the time. Not having FM radio on my phone would be a HUGE dealbreaker. Internet radio doesn't work properly when on the train or bus either.
The fm radio is the big missing feature on my motorola RAZR. I think it will be a "must have" feature on my next cell. I prefer having something a bit slower, or a screen not as clear, and have a FM Radio.
Sure, you have apps such as "TuneIn" where you can listen at FM radio... but it's a great way to using up the 500 megs or 1 gigs data plans carriers tend to offer over here in Canada.
Streamer app for my local radio stations are generally very poor anyways, so I'd much rather FM. Ireland wont be going full DAB for another 4/5 years anyways so thats not a concern for me.

[Q] API access to FM receiver and/or 900Mhz band?

Hi, my name is noob. I have never developed an app for a mobile platform, and it's been quite some time since I've used Java. I'm basically here to see if my app idea is viable
I have a Galaxy S2 (but this question applies to all Android handsets) and was wondering:
1. If the 2G receiver (which is around 900Mhz in Australia) can be hijacked to listen to analogue, non-GSM traffic. i.e. can I basically turn it into a radio?
2. If the bundled FM Radio app is restricted somehow to the normal radio band (88Mhz - 105Mhz or something in Australia). In other words, can it be used to listen to basically any frequency?
3. If I can listen to multiple frequencies at once?
I'm not developing a police radio scanner, but the requirements are roughly similar ..

Go and buy yourself a DVB-T USB dongle using the Realtek RTL2832U decoder chip, and you've got what you want for a few bucks. You may interface it to the Android using OTG. If the dongle got the E4000 tuner (recommended), you'll be able to receive 52 to 2180 MHz with a gap 1091 to 1257 MHz (take or give). You'll get around 2-3 MHz bandwidth, so you can receive all the channels within this range simultaneously.
But you'll need maths, and lots of it.

The TDA7851 MOSFET is Good?

Hello everybody, I was thinking update the radio of my car, is a Toyota Avensis T25, year 2004. The radio I was thinking buy because is suitable for the car (image bellow). It brings TDA7851 MOSFET and for Antena controller is NXP6686 (I think the Manufacturer is (Chinese) Philps).
The Sound of radio is good or bad? The output sound is horrible with TDA?
I'm strict with Audio, so, I don't know what I will buy.
Help
Thanks a lot.

no android 8.0 unit supports 4G natively as data connection. Even their own dongles are hotspot connection only.
there are some dongles that work but 3G only.
8.1 apparently they do support 3G/4G, some even have built-in sim card slots for direct data connection.
but those are px30 units as far as i know, not px5
Stop wasting your time with 4G Dongles.

NXP Semiconductor (formerly Philips Semiconductor) is a DUTCH company. Not Chinese.
These are OK radio receivers. They used to be impossible to deal with, but they're not half bad now that the programming manual has leaked out. Sound is decent, however, reception could be better. I suspect that the reception issues are more due to the chinese module that they are installed in than the receiver itself.
The TDA7851 is from STMicroelectronics, Dutch registered, Swiss headquartered.
Note that both of these components are things you would find in OEM and **mainstream** aftermarket car radios.
But be aware that there is a lot more to a good quality sound than just having a couple of components that are good by themselves. Like a chain, its only as strong as its weakest link. So like i said, put a crummy RF circuit on a TEF6686, and the reception will be less than stellar. Put a crummy analog audio mixer in front of the TDA7851 or too small of a capacitor, and your sound quality will suffer.
