[Q] Help: S2 seems to have become a paperweight - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The last time I used my S2 was a month ago. After flashing a CM10 nightly via the OTA feature I just let it be.
An hour later my phone it won't turn on. I assumed that the battery had ran out until after my 20th-ish time pressing the power button my face appears on the screen (the boot logo).
Assuming everything was okay I left it for about 5 minutes before realising that the screen hadn't changed at all.
I pulled the battery and tried again, this time nothing happened.
I charged it, nothing happened.
I used a USB jig, nothing happened.
A few days earlier I had undertaken a mission to replace the USB Port which seemed to be successful, however, I felt that perhaps I forgot to reconnect the display or something to the mainboard - so I re-opened it and everything looked alright, I even assumed there was a fault with the power button - it wasn't.
I think there are two possibilities: A broken mainboard or it is hard-bricked.
If it's a broken mainboard I'd probably sell it as a broken phone on eBay but if it's hard-bricked I'd get a jtag and then sell it.
Lastly, I can't get the phone to do anything apart from heat-up when charging in the usual area near the camera.
My question is "may I have some help getting it to work?"

So if nothing works also with USB-jig, this is surely a hardware defect and so the only solution is to send it to Samsung if u have any guarantee...
Sorry.

You're going to have to get it a jtag. I had mine done by this guy on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unbrick-Sam...157?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2576e99b95
Good Luck

Haha, I thought about that but then decided against it for the following reasons:
1) rooted, running cm10 and non-stock kernel
2) I'd already sent it in for a repair of the USB port but they rejected it because of the custom software so it's probably blacklisted or something.
3) It is way too obvious a non-qualified person has opened it up and made changes.
4) the colour of the USB port board is bluer than the main board and everything else
5) sticky tape is missing at the bottom right (doesn't make a difference whether its on or off)
Thanks for the tips but they charged my friend £150 for, pretty much, reflashing stock because he was in a boot loop.

Thank you. I was originally going to get a JTAG done and I'll have the money as soon as I sell my PSP but it'd be a waste if I were to find out that the main board was actually at fault. If that were the case I'd sell it and take a bit of money out of the money I'm saving for my computer and buy a second hand S3 which I would then sell for a profit and buy a Nexus 4.
The people I contacted for a JTAG had a good review by a fellow xda member for the same service on the same on the same phone so it'd cost £29.99+postage.

It won't power on and can't access download and recovery modes. Would a USB jig help at all or is she a paperwieght?
Didn't think that it might be because the screen is dead?

Same issue from a lend out phone at JB Hifi
Having the same issue only the phone is a spare lend out phone from JB Hifi while my SGS2 i9100T, which I purchased about a week ago brand new, is in for a screen assessment (bad blue tint) just so I can get a refund. I powered up the lend out phone no problems, worked for a while then stopped working, won't power up or anything. Download, recovery, usb jig, battery out 5 mins, battery charged seperately in charger, phone is dead.
Shame on you JB Hifi Canberra!
Shades of **** Smith's new *coughsReturneDcoughs* external hard drives
Wish I had a fix for you Unfortunately, given it's a loan phone, you're a bit limited so far as flashing something else goes (I wouldn't risk it, put it that way).

It could be a problem with a faulty SD card - Remove it and try and switch on.
It could be a problem with the screen - If any of the key-lights come on, then that is likely the problem.
It could be a problem with a very flat battery - I had this problem with an old HTC. The solution was to remove the battery, plug in the phone to the charger (not USB to computer), leave it for a couple of minutes, plug in the battery and leave for a couple of hours. Finally try and power it on.

Turned out that the "loan phone" they gave me was a returned faulty phone from a previous customer. They gave it to me simply to shut me up!!! I came back the next morning and confronted them and they gave me a motorola defy loan phone????!!!!! I swear they will bend over backwards to avoid having to refund a phone. He asked another sales person why it was returned and was told that the phone was randomly powering down!!!!!! I asked them what happened regarding the previous customer and the store person said JB lost that claim and had to give in to the customers request(whatever that was). That gives me evidence that a refund at JB may exist?
Yeah ? That's disgraceful And Australian retailers honestly wonder why Australian consumers avoid buying from them at every possible opportunity. There's one more reason right there.
**** em. If a phone starts playing up badly within a week like that, the retailer should replace it no questions asked. At the end of the day they're going to be reimbursed by Samsung, them doing the right thing like that just saves you the grief of having to go thru hoops with Samsung.
And given they couldn't/wouldn't do that with you in the first instance, I'd demand a "decent" lend phone i.e a brand new SGS2 (which they should have given you in the first place). If they refuse to play ball, make a scene in front of other customers. Get management involved. Threaten them with consumer affairs, etc.

removed the battery, soft and hard reset.
i got the screen to work for a second when i booted into download mode and it prompted to confirm this is what i wanted to do, but otherwsie the screen seems dead. when i power it on, nothing happenson the screen.
did i somehow like turn my brightness to 0? or like turn off the display?
i dunno i just upgraded from a Galaxy Spica, so im not super familiar with the handset yet.

usb acting up

My phone charges but it seems to be thinking it's always charging even when unplugged. I use it to play music at the bar I work at & it kept going in car docking mode which I never use. My battery was almost dead but it fully charged after the night was done. I went to change the battery to see if that was the problem and when I turned it off the battery charging image came up while it was off with nothing plugged in. Now my battery status keeps flashing & changes from regular size to mini size. Has anyone ever experienced this?

Searching goes a long way here my friend. This is a common problem for a lot of people. (I've never experienced it, but many others have). The solution seems to have been cleaning out the mini usb port on the phone with some 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol and a que tip. Or if that doesn't work it may be a bad usb port.

I don't know what kind of Que tips you use but the ones I have don't fit. I used tissue folded over and it's still screwy. I think something's loose in the or something because sometimes shaking it makes it stop for a bit. If I get a new usb port from e bay will the one for the i9100 work in mine?

I guess I'm in the same boat with you. Noticed a couple of days ago the phone stopped making the little chime when you connect/disconnect the charger. Yesterday I took it off the charger and after a couple hours it was down to 40% without me using it. Today, I swapped batteries and had the same problem with the battery icon. One second it shows about 3/4 full, the next it says 100%. Then I couldn't get it to boot, just kept cycling through the battery icon. Got it booted and not only does it say charging when not connected, the USB icon is in the Stat bar saying it is MTP-connected. Guess it is time for warranty.:crying:

Are you on a custom rom too? What do you think will be the replacement, the s3? I have insurance on it too, might have to go back to stock tho.

I'm on stock, but rooted. If they will give me an S3 I will be very happy. Having seen how many people have had issues with the crappy USB connector on this phone, I may have to insist.
The likely option will be the sky rocket... maybe the oneX. Unfortunately, I don't see them giving out S3's.

Sky rocket yes. I wouldn't say the one x is a downgrade necessarily
At this point I might be ready to get away from Samsung. My SI had to be replaced 3 times. The S2 has had some weird issues, but worked until this started 2 days ago. I had an HTC before (WinMo) that is still working fine today. Maybe I'll have better luck with the 1X seeing how apparently Samsung can't make phones that last.
I got an S2 as a replacement. Not a Skyrocket, so it depends on when you call. Otherwise all they would offer me was the skyrocket or 2 windows phones.

What do you think would be easier, getting the part & fixing it myself or using Odin with a tricky usb port to revert back to stock? I also lost my att splash screen by using that gs2 boot screen changing app. I got rid of the app a while back & have used a couple different roms but it seems permanent.

I don't think switching out the part will be too difficult. I have the same exact problem and am planning on switching the port and ribbon sometime in the next couple weeks. I think I've read that the i9100 one works just fine.

I think the problem is actually in the logic board and not just the connector. Even if you fix it the problem will likely reoccur in time. I don't want my phone repaired, even by AT$T, just to have it fail again, but out of warranty next time. I had to have my Captivate replaced 3 times. Maybe it's time to go back to HTC. It sucks, because I love this phone.

Mine started happening after I spilt water on the end of the charging cable and didn't let it dry off completely before plugging it in. Do you still think it would be in the logic board? Then again, it seems like more and more people are getting this problem. And of course, it's just as the warranty is expiring on these phones.

If it's a physical problem with hardware, no software changes can fix it.

Mine had nothing to do with water. I just think the micro USB connector is a poor design for something that has to be plugged and unplugged as often as a smartphone does and in the kind of environment we use them, especially in the car. The logic board is what the connector mounts to. It takes the signals from the connector and relays that information to determine whether the connection is for charging, PC connection or some other I/O function. Over time the process of disconnecting/connecting will weaken the solder joints and/or cause the thin traces in the ribbon cable to possibly short against each other and create the issues we are seeing. That's why the problems can be seen even after the cable is unplugged. Replacing just the connector will likely not solve the problem.
Talked to support. They are sending me another SII (refurbished). They wanted me to do a factory reset and download an update as part of their troubleshooting. I insisted that no software update would fix a hardware problem. *****ed enough to get them to drop it and send me another phone. My phone is rooted stock 2.3.4. Do you lose root with a reset? If I send it in rooted will that cause me trouble with the warranty dept. even though it isn't relevant to what is wrong with the phone?

[Q] DNA won't charge/turn on

Hey guys,
I'm new to the DNA forum and I've searched through a few threads about this but I haven't been able to find much help. Here we go: so as the title states the phone won't turn on and when I put it on the charger no LED's turn on to resemble a charge at all. I've tried the power button for 20 seconds, nothing happens, I've tried the power button, volume down, and even power, volume up and down. None of these seem to give life to the phone.
This is actually my friend's old phone and he got a replacement for it already I'm just trying to see if I can get it working again. So really I have a free DNA to diagnose because Verizon doesn't want it back.
Phone wasn't rooted before it died, pure stock.
Anybody have a suggestion or path you think I should take?
Thanks ahead of time,
monkey

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you need to ask your friend for the complete story. What happened prior to the phone being bricked? Was there water damage or any other damage. Have you tried other charging cables that are known to be working and looked to make sure the pins inside the charge port have not been broken?
Sounds bricked to me. If it is bricked only way to get it working is to jtag it and send it out. It will be cheaper than paying for a new dna and if you really want it, it would run you a lot less in terms of money for a jtag repair.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
Try letting it charge a full 24hrs and then see if it powers on. If that doesn't work then consider jtag
Sent from my 5 Senses of DNA
Not sure if I'll go the JTAG route or not. Like I said the phone has been replaced already it just sucks I can't take advantage of the phone. I have it sitting on the charger now, going to see if it'll work after a long period of time. There's no water damage, Verizon has checked it already.
If I would JTAG it...what would come of that. I'm not 100% familiar with JTAG, I just did a small amount of googling about it. Looks like a diagnostic procedure?

Its like a low level format that will restore to factory configuration.
It will get the phone working for a smaller coast than purchasing a new one. So you would still be taking advantage of getting a new phone. If you purchase the phone through Verizon with an upgrade you will be spending around 250$ where as opposed to getting it jtaged I believe you will only be paying 65$ (not sure about price) if you go through mobile tech.

The upgrade cost is only $99 nowadays. I just got mine Monday from Fry's Electronics for $99.99. If they didn't have it, I was going to order it from wireless [dot] amazon [dot] com for $99.99.
Interesting...I may have to go that route, I'm considering taking it apart and getting a voltage reading off the charging port. That'll at least tell me if the port is working correctly. If I go down that path I'll keep you all updated.

Greetings, I purchased a Droid DNA on craigslist and thought I had a great deal, the phone turned on, then turned off and never would take a charge again. After contacting verizon and having them tell me to return the device to the"retailer" I purchased the device from, I contacted HTC directly. HTC provided me with an amazing customer service expirence, it was weird and erie how good the service was. They gave me a ticket number number and an address to ship the device to, they didnt care where I purchased it. They day it arrived they fixed it and sent it back with a new motherboard less than 24 hours after delivery conformation. The device works perfectly.
I guess what I am getting at is if you can put the phone back together and make it look like you didnt take it apart, call HTC and create a repair order. All these devices come with at least a 1 year warranty.
I hope you get your device working regardless.
Yeah HTC support is by far the best support I have ever experienced. I felt the same way. My charger was bugging out and I called they got all my info and just said they would send a new one for free and to throw the other one out. They called me today and I missed the call but they didn't leave any message. Wondering if I should call them back or not, but oh well.

Little late on my update but I did get the phone apart and back together. I didn't see anything that stuck out, no water damage, etc.
I would contact HTC and try to get a replacement, however Verizon realized they never got the device back and well...they want it. So there goes my fun...
Thanks for all the input

same problem
I had the exact same issue (no charging no screen but capacitive touch buttons flashed) and had been playing with it trying to get my month old gold brick at this point, to rise like the Phoenix when it caught the light at just the right angle and the screen looked weird. Took a flashlight to it and the LCD is damaged but there is NO damage to the case/frame/digitizer. Been dealing with HTC for a week an probably will have to repair it myself. But heads up to anyone else with the same issue check the screen...
I am having the same problem. Any home based solutions so that i dont need to take it to either Verizon store or post it to JTAG?
Thank You

Although it may not appear to be charging let it sit for the night as it may be. Then take it off in the morning and hold the power button for 30 seconds and see if it boots. Some dna phones have issues when they die. My battery has died 4 times on me and when I plug it in the led light blinks for 2 mins and then it stays lit and charges so, just let it sit over night and try in the morning.
Report back when you have done the following.

Thanks for the quick reply. I did that whole night. The green light dint even blink for a single second. And pressing the power button does nothing. I tried plugging it into computer, computer dint even detect it. (on mac, windows 7 and linux). I tried to boot it into the bootloader mode, still no progress.

So i've had some battery issues for quite a while now, on every single rom. These were mainly that the phone always seemed to think it was charging, but the battery "value" dropped. Battery also lasted half a day or so, even with Apolo regular. Lastly, from time to time, after resetting it, the phone would be at around 14% and start increasing every five minutes or so. So i just dealt with all that for a while, noticing that usb almost never worked and it would take the phone a bit to realize it was actually charging (it wasn't always "passively charging").
So the other day, i turned it off due to low battery, just saving some time later. Then i see the battery "loading" icon, then a green battery 3/4 full with the 5 dots in the bottom, it would get to the third one, then vibrate and turn off. I tried turning it on only to see the S II splash and having the phone turn off instantly. I also tried turning it on while charging, no luck. So finally, i tried google, and found this. I did it with a paper clip and a toothpick, it seems to be separated but there is a tiny bit of dust i believe. Well this did nothing for me and now i'm desperate to fix this battery problem that i have. And pretty sure i can't return the phone cause i violated the warranty.
PS: Running AllianceROM 4.1.3
My wife's S2 had pretty much these same symptoms. I replaced the USB board and everything went back to normal. I wrote a guide on how to do it.....

It's quick, easy to do and inexpensive to buy the part (compared to what a service centre would charge you).
Read the guide IN FULL if you want to DIY it........

Hmm...
Seems kind of a desperate means, isn't there a way i can do that without replacing it?
You got the best possible advice & a simple/cheap (guaranteed) fix from the person who is the expert on this sort of problem with this phone & you're questioning it ?
*shrugs*
Your phone stays like that then.
You *might* get a temporary fix by playing around with the contacts within the port.....but even if it works, it will ONLY BE TEMPORARY......
The Samsung service centres will certainly NOT faff around and desolder/resolder a new port to the board.....they'll just replace the entire board.
It's not like you are replacing the entire motherboard because on the S2 (unlike on some phones) the USB board and the motherboard are separate........

it happens when your charging port is having a short connection. perhaps u'd need to change the charging port. if your device is shorted or not, it can be tested. if you have a multi-meter, you can easily test it.

It wasn't meant as disrespect, just that ordering this kind of stuff down here in Chile is not easy or cheap, so if there was any other solution i'd prefer it.

That's the problem for me though... No Samsung services here in chile. Any way i can return it is with my service provider, which will probably see the triangle and blame this on that.

It's never as difficult as people think, all you need is access to the internet and a credit card or PayPal.
In my guide, I'm pretty sure one of the suppliers ships worldwide.....

Solved: Dead phone. Strange bootloop

Edit: Fixed! Well, temporarily. I've ordered a new power button to replace the sticking one. Until then, I've managed to unstick it for now.
While I'm fairly sure it's dead dead, I figured I'd ask here before giving up.
Background: Best Buy refurbished AT&T i717 with Beanstalk 4.4 flashed. It worked amazingly after switching from 4.2 to 4.4, but one day it froze and restarted into a bootloop. If left alone, it shows the Samsung logo and then goes to a black screen. If plugged in, it vibrates several times, shows the charge indicator momentarily, and then starts vibrating again. It will boot into download mode, but restarts itself after 3 seconds. It will not boot into recovery no matter how I try.
So first question: Is there anything I can do to revive it? I'm making due with a worn out Captivate Glide right now, but I'd like my Note back.
Second question if not: Are there any cool projects I can reuse the parts of my Note on?
If you can get into download mode I'd try hooking it up to a windows machine with Kies installed. Do an emergency recovery and bring it back to stock. If that doesn't work, idk. You will probably need your serial number though.

The device auto reboots after 3 seconds when I get it into download mode. Otherwise, I would have already tried that. Unfortunately, I don't have the device's original serial number either, as the refurbisher didn't think that was important to note on their sticker.

The serial number will be under the battery.....sounds as if maybe your power button is sticking.

That sticker no longer exists. It was removed and replaced by the refurbisher. Also, normal boot does not cycle. It just hangs. I have to remove the battery and replace it to get the device to show the Samsung logo again. I've also removed the bezel/back that covers the mainboard of the device to check the power button. It doesn't seem to stick.
Can I get a stuck power button? Stuck power button anybody?
Even though it may sound or even feel ok, you could have a stuck power button. Flick the back of your phone a few times and see if it helps. Then go to Best Buy and say "WHAT THE [email protected]#K"

Well, my 2 year replacement plan ran out a month ago. This was my second refurb for various hardware failures (first the audio port, and then the USB) I had to switch out the USB board on this one just a few weeks ago actually, thanks to the design flaw of it being on the bottom, but it ran just fine afterward until now. Is there a way to bypass the power button, short of removing it, that I can use to test?

Only 2nd replacement? My wife and I both have the 717 with BB warranty, I've gone thru 4 she went thru 5 of them. So chances are you got one of.ours She's getting a S5 on Friday, but I can't find a suitable alternative for this beast yet waiting for the lg g pro 2 if it ever comes out. Sorry I went off topic

I'm pretty easy on my phones, physically. When I did a trade in on my HTC Inspire to buy the Note, the BB employee was in complete shock that I'd carried it daily for nearly 1 1/2 years.
I'm actually looking forward to the Note 4 this fall. Lots of good buzz coming from side channels. Although, I've started considering settling for the S5 or Note 3 now that my Note is dead.
Looking at the contacts, the power and volume buttons are thru hole soldered about 6mm apart... $3 on ebay for a replacement button. I might try my luck with my soldering iron. If that doesn't work, I'll start looking for ways to put this big screen to use in some DIY projects.
Ok, thanks everyone for the suggestions! I took the board off and attempted to unsolder the contacts. No go, need to buy a high temp soldering iron. BUT, I mashed the button really hard with a screw driver and it seems to have (temporarily) fixed the button. I've ordered a new button and it should be here soon. Hoping this temp fix keeps until.

You are braver than I. Many just take some alcohol and a qtip to clean connection, but obviously you are a bit on the mad scientist side. I can only imagine your phone looks a little frankenstein ish.
