[Q] Not that noob question, more information about kernels and roms - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hi everyone, my questions here may seem strange or noobish, but I'll ask them anyways,
I follow these forums (XDA), since a good time now, (since I have my Xperia X1, got it nov 2008 to be exact, but I discovered XDA a little while later), and I read lots and lots of threads and posts everyday, I was there when CWM was born, I flashed tons of ROMs on my X1, WM6.1, WM6.5, Android since 2.1 I think, I had stopped all this for some times when I had much work to do for school and work etc. and I came back 3months ago with XPERIA P...
I followed and read almost every thread in here, and I'm sorry to announce that I find all this a bit Messy (not Lionel)...
I want the best Experience for my smartphone, and here I'll explain what's the "best" experience for me, and I wish you could tell me what's the best thing to do for it.
1) I love Xperia Stock UI, that's why I want stock XPERIAnce
2) I love smoothness, thats why I want a light ROM and good Kernel =)
3) I know that .54 FW is insanly buggy, so I'll certainly need some tweaks
so now that you've read my little story, I think I have all your attention so I can ask my questions, that's why I'll type them below:
1) What's the best ROM for me?
- I think about getting this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069543) I want to know what you think about it, seems really good to me, but don't want to waste time flashing and reflashing, I used to do it with my old phone so now I just want to flash once and stay with My phone like it is all the time
2) What's the point of getting another than stock Kernel?
- I mean here that okay it can be smoother and have better battery or benchmarks, but tbh I don't really care of that all unless there's a big difference, so is it a real difference between stock kernel and Sliding or Thjap?
Yeah I know my question seem noobish and may have been asked many times, but I'm searching for someone who can make my wishes come true, or at least show me the way to do it by myself, because actually I learn computer science but all this is not what we learn at school, so I don't knwo where to start...
Now For all of you that didn't fall asleep while reading my story (could write a book lol it's so long) hit the thanks button (just to know if you reached the end of my post LOL, joke no need to do it)
Seriously for every person that reaches the end of my post, just feell free to help or teach me how to make my own ROMs, because yea there are tutorials and stuff, but it's always better to have someone showing you the first steps, it helps you keep focusing on it and not being bored,
I thank every guy here that can help me or just took the time to read my looong long post =)

1.) Only you can tell what's the best ROM for your phone. But for my Xperia P, I use BrainsROM. It has all the features I need for my smartphone. Battery does not drain that fast and overall performance is good.
2.) Hmmm. I am not that pro yet when it comes to kernels, but as I can see, there is a big difference using kernels from Sliding and Thjap from stock. You can see big improvements when it comes to overall performance. Most people use Stock ROM's combined with Modded Kernels.
Sorry for my bad english, english isn't my first language. :good: Hit the thanks button if my post helped you.

Your question regarding kernel
The kernels provided by thjap and deepunknown are more than just another stock kernel
pre rooted
Cwm integrated
Init.d support
Ooverclocked ( removed from deepunknown's kernel)
Some performance n battery tweaks
And a hell lot of new things

So Are there any cons over custom roms and kernels, like freeezes or reboots or phones stuck? Did you ever experience that ?

I have never experienced any reboots or freeZes on all custom roms that I have tried ( talking about those for unlocked bootloaders)
Most of the roms dun have any lag like our beloved stock rom
Regarding kernels - if its a test release... U cannot expect it to b highly stable...
Bt final releases are stable ( coz they r thoroughly tested by some testers including me
all credits to developers
Some have made it to 6 stable releases in xperia p section )

And you tell me that custom stable kernel is smoother and has better battery life than stock ? How come Sony engineers didn't make it better so ?

Yes it is bt I didnt said anything about battery yet
When I used miui it was superb
Bt battery life was not as much as I expected ( less than stock rom)
Sony engineers - no words for them
Coz they can port jb to xj bt not to xu and xsola... Thats pathetic engineering

Latest/best stock & custom software/firmware.

Hi, so currently I am running baseband version: S5830XXKPP with IceCream Sunday 2.
I was wondering if there was a newer and/or better baseband version out there and also is there any better firmware than ICS2 ?
The reason being is that currently I find my phone to be running quite laggy (Ive been using this setup for a while now) and the battery drain is pretty bad, along with wake up lag etc.
Help would be appreciated, thanks.
I've used ICSunday 2 before. It was the fastest ROM of its time. But that was almost half a year ago. Find a newer ROM from the Devel section (don't forget to thank the devs) that suits your needs.
As for the battery drain, it's a common problem for the Galaxy Ace. Try only using 2G networks; it's not fast, but your phone can last as much as 70% more.
And the wake up lag is also a problem for most users. The last time I used my Ace before I sold it was around 1 month ago (was running ICS Final with some tweaks) and the wake lock delay was still around.
I can't say for now, though.
One more thread asking for the best.

There's nothing wrong about asking which one seems the best ROM. I appreciate the work of the developers around here, but they're not gods. And if they or you cannot take criticism, then you're in the wrong place, buddy. I don't mean to start a flame war but it's my two cents. There are roms for everything and there are roms who are significantly good at something in particular, such as battery life and whatnot. They all claim to be the best ever when we know there are roms out there that feel incomplete, that they lack final polishes and that the instructions and the feedback are handled in a poor way. So, let's be honest here: THERE'S NOTHING WRONG ABOUT ASKING THAT. DEAL WITH IT.
Absolutely agree. There are definitely going to be some roms which are superior to the other roms and there is no wrong in asking for there names and answering these questions.
I don't mean no offence to any dev, and i know they don't ask us to pay for there Roms or something but seriously, Devs are not crybabies who can't take criticism. If your Rom isn't the best, there is a reason for it. I am sure most of the devs here are grown up and can take positive criticism and improve on it.
Again, no offence to anyone. Just my personal opinion.

[Q] Best ROM/Kernel for Ray?

Hi friends. My girlfriend recently purchased a Ray. We have rooted the phone and now are ready to install a custom ROM. I wanted a review of ROMs from you guys which you have used on your Ray. (Camera, battery life, smoothness, stability etc.)
You can help me by letting me know about the following ROMs
- CyanogenMod 7.2 RC1
- KA11 Ice Cream Sony
- FreeXperiaProject 7.2
- FreeXperiaProject 9.0
- JJ's HYBRID ROM v3
- RayOnium
Or you could just tell me the best ROM for Ray.

Well I thought xda was meant to share your knowledge and help others!
I have tried CM7.2, CM9.0 and Offical ICS BETA ROM V4 Update http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516750
ICS BETA is the best so far. CM7.2 and CM9.0 is too buggy for me yet. (IMHO)

Yes but not this kind of question. Clearly you post it at the wrong thread. Why don't you put it on the sticked thread above? And again, none is the Best. It comes down to each person's experiences, and it is not kindly enough to compare something that's been done for passion, with silly ranks. If all ROMs are paid version, you could ask such a question. But it is free so it is ethically not allowed to compare them all, it just makes some war (as i have seen it before on X10MP forum). Try yourself and read all the testimonial. Read before ask will never hurt.

there is nothing bad in asking for help.. Newbies really dont know where to go...
Its just a Kernel or ROM the guy is asking...There wont be anything too sensitive or emotional for Dev if someone helps him choosing a ROM...
@OP... Every ROM has its own features... Depends on users choice or features he/she wants... it just takes 15 mins to check a ROM and its features... try each one by one and stay with the one that suits u more...

Not hating the ROM mind you, just the theme.. And you know me all along since the first mod i popped here, that i kept the theme as stock as possible (at least in rhythm with stock theme), and later you mod the theme for any other. So you knew how much i love sony theme (or too lazy to do a theme of m own) ..
Yes it is just a phone and how nice it is if everybody has the same mind like yours. The thing is, majority of human is human, they like to idolize something and when different peoples with different mind comes together, war..
Ah forget it, getting off topic now.. X)

Well, all I can say is your not yet ready to install custom rom. Unlike any other brand of phones, Sony has a locker bootloader. You have to unlock boatloader first which will void the warranty to install custom ROM.
I'll give you a tip in choosing rom.
1. Go to each rom's thread, read the rom's description first, see if the phone features that are essential for your everyday usage is working as we all now that each has their own pros and cons.
2. Feedbacks, just read feedbacks. It will give you the idea if the Rom is for or not.
3. Number of post, check the number of post. More post may actually mean that many people are using that rom.
Go find it yourself. It's not easy to give comparison as it may hurt the developer's feelings reading some bad comments about their hardworks.

In real i like this topic ... i was reading many things around any Rom ... same with kernels and that's good, what we all together can speak about them all in one place. Coz if u can see, each time when any Rom will be updated, makers did new Topic about it, well why we can't talk about things like that, like new Rom's in one place? For many Dev's it will be nice place too, coz they can see what ppl's like, what they want, for what they downloaded for example MIUI and not Cyan.
Iam interested in this topic, coz iam trying to find balanced Rom, just needed app's in it, everything is working and smooth ... and thats my question of the day, what Rom and kernel(also baseband) draining battery not so fast?
For example on same Rom what i have now iam tried different options in build.prop
pm.sleep_mode=2
ro.ril.disable.collapse=0
but made one mistake in same day iam changed baseband ... and if before my Rom take for whole night 2% of my battery ... after this moves i got 3%.
Today iam trying new baseband and we will see what i can have then.
Well its good to know about them all, i mean Rom's .. and iam tried many of them, last JJ's rom, MIUI from iriijo and bla bla bla. And all what i can say, they all bugged, GB more stable for now and everything is working nice with repack from 4pda .. for nice view i use Go laucher Ex, its overclocked and bla bla bla. I like it, but i love Torch from MIUI with home button and many small things like that in any other Rom.
Well this topic must live, i hope soon we can read here more info and maybe someone can offer to me, how to make my battery life better, coz my phone can stay without charging just 1 day ^^ and one guy at the 4pda forum got 3 days and 14 hours, used 2g(but it was on), not 3g ... used internet, listened music, used wifi also ... i think even 2 days like that should be perfect, but why i can't do the same ?^^
Sorry if my english isn't perfect enough and sorry for to much words in this answer ^^

CM9 kernel vs Siyah Kernels

Before to make this a debate. I must say that this is all my personal opinions.
I wish you all to know that I have probably flashed all kinds of roms, SEEKING to find some kind of PERFECT rom, but you all know that we as humans will never get and accept something that is perfect, as perfect. (just love be4 she dumps you xD)
So continuing with this thread, I wish to share my experiences with you ALL <3 and hopefully answer all of your questions.
Stock CM9 KERNEL/ROM
Pros: The best one i have tried with almost never changing Battery life, I love it and always return to this bad guy after a bunch of roms with bad battery life. You must get this!
Cons: Little to none customization when it comes to governors.
Siyah x
Pros: considered as the best kernel for almost 78% of the XDA(not really, hehe), they like this because of the multiple governors and for being one of the best kernels with cero problems, always updating. Apart from it, it also supports 2nd rom in recovery, so its perfect.
Cons: as all other kernels, in order to get best battery life, you need to tweak them, change voltages, and it takes time, without changing anything from this kernel, the battery life goes to 90% from 100% with only 4 minutes.
Other kernels
Pros: you get to try new kernels...Woohooo!!!
Cons:just not as good as siyah kernels without customizing them.
So I hope you find this as a little entertainment for both, me and you, with love, bye!....
Seriously, what's the meaning of this thread?
How about a new comparison?
This thread VS this comment
This thread
PROS -
•Something to pass my time
•Keeps a mod busy when they come along and close it
CONS -
•Threads of this kind aren't allowed on XDA because a simple debate can easily get out of hand
•It's a pointless thread and wastes peoples time
This comment
PROS -
•It passes time
•It's kinda funny
•Makes me seem like an arse
CONS -
•None
I'm a product of the system I was born to destroy!

Well, based on my own knowledge..
The main pros of all custom roms is that you push your device tru its limits
You make your device more powerful than stock
While the main cons is that you will lost your warranty which is only valid for only a year i think

dude..every roms have some advantage or disadvantage.and there are like hundreds of rom availlable for neo/v.so u can not get info about pro cons about each rom.these are the reasons that your qstn will not get a proper ans.
-differnt people has different choce for rom..some like blueis icon or stock experience like AOSP,CYNOGENMOD,PACROM while others like roms that are based on stock sony firmwares.
-some prefer light roms that runs faster..like JJ Hybrid rom..but some like heavy roms which have all social and whether widgets so its up to you what you like more.
-choice of rom also veries for every version of rom..some version may be stable..but it will not have latest features..on the other side the rom with latest features may not necessarily be stable.
bottom line:

Nothing more can be answered in a more fitting way!
Good job Deepak!
And @OP
Looking at the magnitude of Rom and kernels for our beloved device,
None can give you a detailed pro and con list for every specific Rom...
You'll have to invest your time and effort! Well, not a single Rom is worse when compared to the stock!
Everyone has delivered well with their bit of ideas by presenting their Roms!
I hope you get my point and would take it +vely

Tell you the truth I don't find much difference in stock roms. Probably just a few tweaks here and there. And since you probably aren't going to update your rom often, ANY stock based rom should be fine. There are plenty out there, just choose the one that looks best for you.
As for the kernels, you don't have much choice actually. It's either alliance or suave. I personally prefer alliance due to the somewhat better performance.

This is like a best ROM thread which is not useful. The pro's for one person may be a con for another and vice versa, it's like one mans rubbish is another mans riches. Best thing to do which is why these forums exist, is for you to look at the ROM's available and then experiment for yourself by trying them, you lose nothing and gain experience so win win.
Thanks

[Q] Which custom rom would be best for me?

I know, there are huge lists of roms that are available for the Xperia Neo, but I have a long list of requirements and thought that you might be able to help me out with something that I would probably need multiple weeks for.
General information:
The exact name for my smartphone is 'Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V'.
I don't have any warranty on my phone anymore. (I got it on xmas in 2011 and I had 24 month warranty.)
I rooted it in 2012 (april approximately)
I lost the backup between millions of files on my old computer. (It still exists though.)
I can't remember what I used to root it, but it was rediculously simple.
I installed an Anit-Theft app on it in 2011. 'Avast Internet Security & Antirirus' and I remember it sayin something like it will hide itself as system app and protect itself etc. I'm not sure if I remember the password...
What I expect from the custom rom:
It must support all the components (including HDMI, USB, WIFI, GPS, 3G, cams...).
It should be as small as possible (on disc and RAM)
but there shouldn't be any critical or extremely annoying bugs.
low CPU usage
control over the CPU clock (to get more battery time)
I only want necessary software to be installed on the device by default. (atm there are about 100 apks that are clearly not necessary)
I hope I didn't forget anything.
The reasons:
I want more battery time. (Yes I already turned my screen darker, bought a bigger battery and closed background processes)
I hate it to have a mess on my device.
I hate it to have no control over it.
I need more internal discspace. (Thanks to bad developers like WhasApp's and the 100 unnecessary preinstalled system apks. I think I don't even have 200MB available on my internal storage.)
Lesser lag and responding times (especially for the keyboard)
Best regards and thanks in advance,
ferivon

No rom is fast or best. It depends on users choice. Try each rom and see whats best for you. Dont create such threads in future. Its baseless

I did not ask for the best rom. Read the whole post before answering in future.
Btw: When I registered here, a message showed up, implying that it is okay to ask for roms with specific features as long as you don't ask for it in a dev section.
However, enough offtopic, I asked for the rom that would fit my needs the best.
I hope you don't seriously want me to test every rom that is compatible with my phone. Not sure if you knew it, but there are humans that have a 'real life'. I can't just put a new rom on my device and test it for 10 minutes to see if it fits my needs. It takes a lot of time to see if the rom is stable bug-free etc. And now imagine I would do this for like 50 roms. It would take me years...
It doesn't necessarely need to be the one that fits my needs 'the best'.
I just thought that someone here has some experience with most roms and that you could at least give me a smaller list of possible roms.
Or maybe you just happened to know one specific rom that is very good and fitting my needs?
I read a message or something like that when I registered here. And it implied that it is okay to ask for roms with specific features as long as you don't ask for it in a dev section.

You better try latest updated ROMs use recommended kernel mentioned in rom thread, no further discussions

Let me clear up somethings... You need hdmi so you will have to stick to ics or gb... And in general all roms try to provide you the best experience... By having an unlocked boatloader you can install a custom kernel and thus getting control on processor... All roms generally aren't bloated... So I would say any stock based rom ll suit you...

You don't have to test every ROM anyways and
DO not refer "the life" here...respect the developers, they do have their lives even after making these ROMS for You....
If you are intelligent enough to read the general and development threads.... and know the ROM bases(AOSP,cyno,PACMAN,etc) from good developers....I can bet you ...you will find a ROM good or even best in less testing...because many ROMS on ICS based are premium icing on the cake...
do check the rating on the right side of the thread
Ok, thank you all.
Try different roms before deciding what is best
For me carbon rom works good for 4.4.2. Waiting for update to 4.4.3
