Porting Soldier of Fortune II - Double Helix to Android - Anyone interested? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

You've all probably seen that both "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" and "Quake 3 Arena" have been ported to Android OS. Both are Quake III - Engine based games and work and look pretty good on the Android !
Now I am hoping that someone with the right knowledge has the time and wants to port this oh so awesome game to Android.
If needed, I'll help in the ways that I can. (I am a SoF2 mapper/skinner but I know a lot about this game + I'm in a Modding clan that has a very good coder who could help too.)
For those who do not know this game, it's a game from 2002 made by Activision and Raven. It is known to be one of the most Gore game ever and people still play it , even after 10 years (So do I). The developers are the same of Call of Duty 4 and Black ops.
It's both Online as Offline.
In Multiplayer it's possible to play in both 1st person and in 3rd person.
The levels are located in Texas, Prague, Kamchatka, Colombia, New York, Hong Kong and Switzerland

Maybe I should've said this too, but the game runs on OpenGL which might make it easier to port.

Well I should've posted it yeah, sorry about that ..
Here's the source code of SoF2 MP so I guess SP won't be possible but still, it's possible to play against bots :good:
SoF2 1.03 Source Code

Ok, I mailed the person who created Kwaak3 (Roma / n0n3m4) to ask if he can or if it's possible to port SoF2 DH to Android and he said that it isn't possible because it's closed-source.
Hmm too bad, hopefully there'll be some kind of emulator then if possible but I doubt it.

bit of an old thread but I want to bring it back to top to see if anyone is possibly still interested in this. SOF2 was a game that I played for years. The MP with OSP mod on top and the competitive community was incredible. Then real damage mode came along and ruined the game... that's when we moved to cs source as competitive sof2 was on its last legs. Saying all that, it would be incredible to play a game which has got so much nostalgia attached to it on a handheld device.

Hi, like yourself i am an massive SOF2 fan, spent many years tearing people apart on mp_italy, shop2 and kam2.... i still play to this day in a server with no bots, just a bunch of us old timers.
I for one would LOVE to see this ported to android, it would be great to have this on the go and play using my nVidia Shield. Like Boyka, i am a mapper/skinner having been part of the original XL group that created the tb_ series maps. I can and would help where needed.

Hello there, I have no idea if this thread remains active or not. I'm a 3D artist, I made some maps back in the days on SOF2 under the name of Hutch (ported dust2 from CS, and made some other "useless" maps). Today I'm a rather good 3D artists, I have tons of props and even more textures I created, all "up to date" for current gen graphics. I'm looking for people who'd like to port the game to UDK4, some kind of sof2 reboot, able to connect on the old servers (sof2 classic), and with plenty of new features when playing on the current gen servers. I won't tell too much about it, this message is a bottle in the sea, but please contact me if you're a coder (good one), an animator, or a maper. Here's my facebook, please don't hesitate.

No games for android says illusion labs :(

I'm a huge fan of illusion labs games for the iPhone and I was dissopointed to learn there were no games like TouchGrind or Sway for android, so I emailed illusion labs to see if they had any plans to port these games or something similar to android. This is the response I received:
Hello,
I'm glad you like our games. We have no plans at the moment to port those games to android at the moment. One of the reasons is that the performance is much lower on Android.

Low performance seems like a lame excuse to me coming from an owner of a beastly Samsung Vibrant. Also, my iPhone 3G under-performs most android phones by a long shot and plays these games perfectly fine. I think performance is a poor excuse with some of the top selling android devices having GPU's capable of pushing more pixels then the iPhone, like the Galaxy S line.
I think illusion labs is seriously underestimating android and the demand for high quality android games on the platform. My proposal? Show them there is damand! Download labyrinth (illusion labs only android port) rate it and leave comments demanding they port the other games! And email illusion labs at: [email protected]
Tell them how badly android needs quality games and how perfectly capable android is at games.
Some screenshots of what we are missing out on.

"If Gameloft can do it, you can too."
Hardware fragmentation is going to be a major issue with Android for gaming. Look what happened with angry birds. They have to develop a light edition for low and mid range phones. When there is no hardware standard this is bound to happen. Sadly I may end up buying a win7 phone in place of my vibrant because of this one problem....which sucks balls. I like good games...not tile puzzles, bejeweled knockoffs and the like. What is the benefit of having the fastest gpu on the market when there's sh*t for games....other than Gameloft.

You don't need to move on to WinMo7, I'm sure you and Illusion Labs are un-aware of the new Hardware requirement list of Gingerbread and the new Gaming API introduced with it for high-end 3D Games. Since this is now going to be a standard requirement for all Android phones, the gaming scenario is soon going to change and be at par or exceeding to that of iOS 4 platform.

They don't have to make games compatible with every android device. Newer idevice games don't work on older idevices, yet there are still 10's of millions of older iwhatevers in use. Android game devs could just target newer devices the same way. Fragmentation is a lame excuse.
I read an interview with John Carmack the other day and he said the lack of commitment to android was mainly do to market issues. Limited download size plus lack of built-in DRM means a lot of back end work. Building and supporting a drm system and servers to deliver the games. Not fun stuff. Makes more sence then fragmentation and hardware limits. Hopefully gingerbread fixes this.

Yea it seems HTC has lost its flare against the awesomeness of Samsung.
I got a reply to the email I sent and thought I should share it here.
Let me explain a bit further what I meant in the mail on the forum.
First of all I think the title of the thread is a bit misguiding. All I wrote in the mail was that we have no plans at moment for those two games. That doesn't mean that we don't have other plans for Android.
The comment on performance may have been a bit short formulated on my part. I know that there are many high performance Android devices that can run any high performance game. But there is also a lot of low end phones that have less performance. The problem is that we can't single out one group and have to release our games on all devices. We always try to get our games to run smooth on all devices they are intended for.
I hope my answer was helpful.
Best Regards
Marcus

Very simple, they make games for the high end and low end just like other developers. That is their loss if they choose not to.

eyh, i see that people are getting rather confused about gaming on the rezound so i thought id clear things out or help ppl who are trying to get the most out of gaming on the rezound and playing almost all high-end games on the rezound ....
ok so as for gameloft games i see people are worried that none come in actual 720p , well as for now only a few games do , but rezound has compatible scaling so most games will work , although you may see artifacts from hvga sized screens such as too small blood vignettes and smaller controls ect..., but most wont be a problem so long as you download and install the correct version of the game
now there are some tegra games playable on the rezound such as riptide gp , samurai vengence(they make non tegra also v1.0.1) and the football one idk what its called , anyways there are a few these are playable through the chainfire plugin which has been reported working on the rezound , but makes wallpaper veiwing unpleasant it does work , then use the tegra plugin obviously and play the game dont start the game before you do this
then there are the games just plain old not compatible there are only a few , but they do exist, one being the new modern combat 3 , a personal favorite .. now for these select few you need to change the build prop of the phone , a small file in the /android part of ur phone , there are tutorials on this change it to the nexus s build prop its the most compatible and easiest
___________now on to the list_________
gameloft___-version ---___
-9mm desire hd
-asphalt 6 desire hd
-backstab desire hd or i9000
-fast 5 desire hd or any other adreno
-modern combat 3 any adreno or snapdragon (must change build prop)
-nova 2 hd desire hd or desire z
-rainbow 6 desire hd
-and other work with desire hd im sure
-specifically not working
*sacred odyssey
*dungeon hunters 2 (too small of screen)
other games_____--------
shadow gun all versions
grand theft auto 3
street fighter iv (720p only)
dead space
n64oid
let me know what other high end or good games
all these games work with the nexus build prop also
I changed the build prop to the nexus for order and chaos and it still doesn't work
you have the wrong version of order and chaos ,and you dont have to change the build prop for that game .
huh? order and chaos doesn't even appear in the market if you don't change your build prop and i have the latest version and its still no good.
Don't use market to get it then
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Any way to get ea sports games to work?
well everyone if having a problem with madden 12 downloading the extra data so i wouldnt recomend it , i dont know about fifa try the desire hd version or changing the build prop
I don't think you know what you're talking about with order and chaos. Show me a video of it working on the rezound
Lol dude don't play that one game and I've definitely got it working, but I'm not gonna pay to play per month or prove anything to you
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Mmhmm. Besides this guy who claims to have it working on the latest (and probably a cracked version), did anyone else get order and chaos to work?
order in caos is not available on the rezound kid get over it go play wow
The name calling begins. Woot.
So you say you got it working but you have no idea how you did it. Now you're saying that its not compatible. Where is the consistancy? That's like me saying I got ics running on the rezound. I don't remember how and I wont show you but I got it trust me. Sike.
Sorry buddy but like I said I don't think you have tested this yourself. Stop digging your own grave please.

Good read.

Samsung will merge bada with Tizen

http://www.forbes.com/sites/elizabe...-its-bada-os-with-intel-backed-tizen-project/
PS: The King is dead. Long live the King.
WTF ?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And i always wondered why is Wave 3 so different even in its core
Well the journey got to its end now....bada is Tizen....Samsung being just Samsung
Please rename this section to Tizen
We are stuck with RTOS based phone now that Samsung think it is low-end device
Sources of 2.0 will never get published
Best Regards
My question is will existing Bada users get pushed to the side or will Samsung ACTUALLY do something for us.And i will be pretty pissed if Samsung push us aside and tell us to f*** off.
so what will happen to Wave 1-2 users???
please anyone explain us.
regards
waveguru
Well if it's Open source why not...
But I think it's the dead of Bada.
Please Samsung, make your great phone and let other make OS.
It's hard to stay on Bada (middle end device, no open source, no update, no communication about samsung...) when we can easily got all that with Android

Note that Samsung is emphasizing Tizen's backwards compatibility with existing Bada Apps, not compatibility with existing hardware. Samsung benefits Samsung by keeping their app count up. Samsung is not benefiting their existing customer base by giving them an OS upgrade path. As you said, this is Samsung being Samsung. This can also be seen by the title of the related Forbes article at the bottom of the page: Samsung Playing All Sides To Win. Reviewers were telling us the same thing when Samsung released Bada alongside Android.
Agree with above

My opinion is we need to start port Tizen to the wave.
I don't think that it will kill Bada. For exemple Samsung seems to have still interest about it as they just have signed a contract with TomTom for a GPS app.
Also I read somewhere that some others manufacturer are taking part of the Tizen project. It would be a OS moreover like the Boot to Gecko project.
=> Every one want to get an mobile OS.
For me Bada is still alive although samsung seems to drown it.
@akuji_bwn : these pictures are not the right one. It is simply Bada 2.0 on the picture.
Here you have some :
http://www.sammobile.com/2012/01/08...nd-the-first-phone-will-be-the-samsung-i9500/
Appstore is powered by bada 2.0 since "1 month +"...
New devices like S8600, S7250 and S5380 are very young... 1 month +
So Samsung will push/support minimum there 3 new bada 2.0 devices 1 year...
Why should Samsung kill there 3 devices now?
I think bada 2.0 will have support to 2013 ...
So we can benefit 1 year with our S8500/S8530 and so on...
Best Regards

Yes I agree with you it will be supported to ,at least, 2013.
yes bada 2.0 will have support to 2013 but
Wave 3 will get bada 3.0 by the end of this year
bada 3.0 will be bada - Tizen merge OS so it will be open source
The idea is what will Samsung call bada 3.0....bada or Tizen or a very new name ?!.. Probably bada
Again no idea how long will it take from Samsung to merge and update but they are doing it while tweaking 2.0 to make it final
In my point of view 2.0 should be open sourced too to give the whole community a chance to make it better...but Samsung love the way it controls old Wave I/II users because the bought devices with low prices
I am supporting bada until 3.0 appears
Best Regards
Given the tendency of Samsung to provide lack luster support, the touchwiz style interface of BADA and the general eco system I think I'll pass. probably along with most people.
I don't think they are ever going to opensource any SHP libraries, that platform has been made to be easily built as out-of-kernel, DLL libraries. So they will just opensource kernel, which is very linux-like and most of drivers and GUI will remain proprietary.
Not surprised to see Samsung revealing this. It's clear they have been playing all sides and what ends up happening alot of the time, is one or more sides get burned.
I'm not technical enough to know what Samsung would be meddling with Tizen as it seems so similar to Bada. Better to have just made Bada open source I had felt.
The biggest problem with Samsung is their inability to rollout anything in a timely fashion. There are whole countries still officially stuck on Bada 1.0. They didn't get Bada 1.2 and will have no chance of getting Bada 2.0. That assures a conclusion that all those people will get pissed off and head to another phone OS.
If Samsung were able to push out their updates worldwide at the same time, Bada right now would have been huge. At present it's just lost potential and this trickle of unofficial firmwares leaking out here and there. Plus having no US releases for the Waves has to go down as the stupidest move I've seen a big company make in recent times.

don't worry samsung is screwing all of existing customers for software updates.. android + bada ppl will go cry as there are no software updates for most of devices out in market.....
even if they make bada + tizen open source dev will have to work ass off as samsung might not release kernel sources of old devices...
and someone will have to create it from scratch which is difficult task
its about own personal choice but when i look at meego and tizen , MEEGO lookes much better. i mean samaung may screw with the MEEGO aka tizen.
App compatibility
Its funny that they claim app compatibility when they cant even make some popular bada 1.2 apps work with bada 2.
(example shrek kart, shrek's adventure, hero of sparta, tom clancy's hawx, GTA academy, bruce lee dragon warrior, blades of fury etc)
Now they claim bada apps will work with tizen.
I'll believe it when i see it but i dont think it will happen for most of the apps without a recompile.
There's great news but what i see its just SDK brew not kernel....

no gameoad support I believe. plus its not needed. the touch controls are great. anywhere you touch on left side of screen an on-screen analog stick will show. transparent. you use that to move. right side of screen you can use your finger to pan around the scene. or tap that side of screen to arm your weapon. then tap again to fire. its very simple and works great. I love that game. have it on my Ipad and now on my prime. still haven't bear it yet. game can get very hard and sure to scare you. best played with headphones on for the full fear and scare effects. plenty of times my woman heard me violating..lol it'll really make you jump..

That is the EXACT type of control scheme that works better on a gamepad. It works "well enough" on a touchscreen, but is by no means at all the better way of controlling. However, you did basically affirm that I will be able to use a touch profile with the game, so that makes me very excited!

You can buy a game that is compatible with any device you currently own. Once you have bought it it can be downloaded to any other devices you own, or may own in the future.
Thanks dude!
I picked up Dead Space last night and played it some and it looks like it going to be Great game. Quick question is there a way to stop at a point in the game and Save it there to resume later? Or does the game have certain points in game play that it Saves itself?
Thanks

As you progress there are points where it'll save automatically. Another place where it saves is when you reach the limitless booth area to upgrade you Welsh n armour with nodes. Also the store to purchase new things at. You will see them if you haven't gotten that far yet.
Bought it since it was on sale, and while the controls are awesome, I really wish it was a port of Dead Space and not just a typical mobile game out of the franchise. I'm sure since Dead Space is a 7.5GB'ish download off Steam that it's sure as heck not gonna be as small a download as Dead Space Mobile, but hey, $10 more than the games usual price and I'd certainly have bought a reduced-graphics-quality port, and already own a copy of the PC version.
I also think the controls would be rather easier to use on my phone than my tablet :'(.

Anyone unable to download the additional files? It gets to between 10 and 20% and just crashes to homescreen.

Server probably slammed due to sale. I would just try again later at night or tomorrow.
it crashes to homescreen for me, too, when it tries to DL files. Gee, I wish EA could afford better servers /s
oh man, these $0.49 and $0.10 deals are killer for me. I buy way too many apps that I never play/use
Dead Space doesn't start on my prime, it crashes just after the EA logo during the loading screen. Anyone else got that issue?

Modified drivers with full OpenGL support?

I am vaguely interested in a nexus 9, but the driver gimping is a non starter. I do play some Tegra optimized games, and frankly I refuse to give them up because of Google handiwork. I was considering this device as an alternative to the shield tablet, but if this issue can't be fixed I'm going to stick with nvidia's offering. FYI I do already own the shield tablet, I was just considering a switch due to issues I've been having.
I too am interested in making this possible. Pretty frackin pissed at google for disabling something the hardware supports for no reason. Nvidia has it working for the shield tablet so you know the drivers and libraries are available and it would be a simple task for then to enable.
I don't know where its disabled or what all would have to be done/tried to make it work. I have complained on both Nvidias and googles forums. Currently waiting for nvidia to release the full factory images for lollipop for the shield tablet to try compare + copy files. I'm no developer but may have to learn how to compile kernels and build Roms to properly try and overcome this.
Anyone who has more knowledge of the ins and outs of linking libGL.so and such that can offer any insight on where to poke around or start would be greatly appreciated!

it would be much better if we had 1st party support instead of porting it over from the Nvidea shield. but its a start i guess.
Do you have the links were you complained to Google and Nvidea maybe if enough people complain they will do something about it.

Latest response from someone at nvidia in the 2nd nvidia link above...
"Hi, Users
The K1 Chip does support OpenGL 4.4 and CUDA from the hardware side. The problem is that HTC made the device and Google controlled the software for that device.*
For Nexus 9, using AEP (Android Extension Pack) you can still achieve a lot graphics boost on K1 as using the modern OpenGL APIs."
So it sounds to me like google are the ones that left full GL 4.4 out. We need to petition google to have it enabled and included in future releases.
The Antutu benchmark for 3d graphics is really close between the Shield and Nexus 9. The N9 doesn't seem gimped in this regard. Is there some specific opengl functionality that was left out but doesn't show up in this benchmark?
What's really odd are the CPU performance numbers for the N9 in Antutu. I have a hard time believing the results, as the numbers seem unusually low.

Yeah they removed a ton of functionality that can speed up applications, as well as breaking compatibility with a ton of existing apps. The android extension pack is a garbage replacement and is google's apparent reasoning for removing OpenGl support. Also benchmarks should be taken with a grain of salt anyways. They are garbage for real world use.

Added a comment.. Hopefully google will listen to us... Or perhaps a gifted developer will be able to port stuff from the nvidia shield device...
is there any progress or its dead

Pretty sure it's dead. The 5.1.1 update 2 months ago was a major update, and it includes no new OpenGL support.
