Question for more experienced fellows on my EVo - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Ok, I am running as of today MeanBean 2.0
But my firmware / radio is way old (baseband 1.05.11) (BUT MY PHONE WORKS PERFECT with no problems whatsoever)
I am S-ON
Racoon only supports Win7 and my computer is Running Win8 64bit. Ubuntu LiveCd is too complicated for me I think.
Can I Unroot my phone, take the Htc OTA to upgrade Radios, Firmware and all and then root again?
Any help is appreciated

Yes you can re-lock your bootloader and take the OTA and it will update everything including your hboot. Also make sure you do it from your phone DON'T use an RUU the latest is having some issues it only updates the hboot and nothing else.

Yes, you can but I would wait a little longer. Being s-off is so trouble free and makes your Evo life so much easier. Dirty racun is going to be releasing a s-off for hboot 2.09 soon and hopefully they will make it available on more PC platforms. The new hboot seems to be more aggressive towards s-on rooted phones so upgrading without the ability to go s-off might not be wise. The new radios have definitely been a big improvement for a lot of people so that is the biggest reason for upgrading. There has been a lot of people that have run dirty racun on 64bit machines with no problems. Just make sure you use the 32bit drivers posted by dirty racun. Or see if you can find someone that will let you use their computer. I used a win xp laptop to run dirty racun with no problems for Kao to get s-off. Go for it.

I would consider dual booting ubuntu. I think its supported. I have very limited to no computer knowledge but downloading ubuntu12.04 and dual booting was fairely painless.

I will try Ubuntu LiveCD and see...but if it gets too complicated I will wait or relock bootloader, take the OTA and root again.
OH crap!! Is there a ROOT for the latest OTA Jelly Bean ??

You can root all hboots via HTC dev unlock method.

If you are still on hboot 1.12 you can update radios and firmware with a zip file for s-on users that captain throwback has in his thread in android development.

You can only upgrade the radio. This is why it's recommended to be S-off, so you can update your radio and PRI, as well.

Update HBOOT 1.15 to 1.19?

It appears that HBOOT 1.15 will not get s-off any time soon...Is it O.K. to upgrade to HBOOT 1.19 and wait then for s-off capabilities, or is 1.19 taboo also.
I am rooted, can I stall HBOOT 1.19 with abd, or would I have to root the phone again, and install a recovery...
There are 2 ways, ruu or revert to stock for ota. You must relock bootloader before ruu or ota. For the ota you need stock recovery as well. There's a few misconceptions floating around. First is that you need to update to run the latest base, this is simply not true, I'm running mikeys latest without issue. The second is basically the same but involving the aroma installer, flashes fine but sometimes kernel will not flash and you boot to bootloader. This does not mean you need to update only that the kernel did not like the new base, fastboot kernel and you'll be fine. Some people still have WiFi issues and others have LTE issues, both should have been addressed in the last 2 updates and people with the latest firmware are still having problems. To me this does not warrant relocking upgrading and going through the unlock again.
A lot of people including myself don't consider 1.19 an upgrade and like om said you don't nerf to update

Always best waiting
In my experiences, it is almost ALWAYS best to wait. If for some reason 1.19 gets s-off before 1.15 then u can update. But for now, just wait. I got lucky and I'm 1.12 s-off either way warranty is gone so always get s-off whenever possible.
I keep seeing threads about s-off. I'll like people to be more specific as to what they're trying to achieve that they can't while being s-on?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Just the ability to directly flash software to partitions normally inaccessible, Firmware basically. Those of us s-on would have to flash back to stock, lock hboot, and accept an ota or relock and run the ruu
Also, don't know the details of any of it, but in the s-off bounty thread guy is donating a 1.15 hboot. U can flip a coin better than I can say what they will do with it then. Either update it to 1.19 or try and find the exploit on 1.15.
Personally, if I was a badass at finding exploits in HTC coding then I'd crack both like yesterday. But if I was that badass I'd have better stuff to do as well... Hoping for 1.19 s-off just for future development.

Quick question: Are you saying that if I wanted to run Mean ROM that I do not need to be in the latest OTA? I'm confused because I was under the understanding that we needed to be on 2.13. Please clarify for me.
Sent from my EVO LTE using xda app
No you don't, I ran meanrom a few days ago and today I switched to viper 2.02. Meanroms kernel installer worked fine, viper required fastboot but both run fine
Thanks for the quick response. Wow, I feel like a dumb *ss now. I've been holding out trying any new roms because I didn't want to come off of hboot 1.15.
Which rom do you like better so far between viper and mikey's?
Sent from my EVO LTE using xda app
The level of customization on viper is crazy, meanrom runs great with evilz kernel and is closer to stock. I'm still sifting through the different mods for viper and I've yet to check out any themes but so far but I'm still digging through it all

I'm Hboot 1.15

Bought phone today and got home and noticed the hbpot. I'm a flashoholic! What the hell should I do now??? Just HTC dev unlock I guess?

Thanks to you as well. Ok. The instructions are a little sparse. I have a small netbook currently running ubunto, I could use that? Also, I would root with regaw and htc method and then use netbook for rest of instructions.
read the first post in the thread, it does work just follow the instructions.

OK. I got rooted with regawmod, then was successful in the downgrade to 1.12 hboot. Now I am stuck on trying to RUU to 2.13 from 1.22. I keep having it fail on updating though RUU. Is there any other way to get that done? Can I just flash Fresh 5.1.1? Or am i not able to because i'm not S-off???

Y don't u just do the lazypanda s-off now since you are stock. U don't need fresh rom to do it. The new base is installed when u install a new rom on the new base. Just flash radios separately which u can do once s-off or just being on 1.12 I believe.

Why would you downgrade hboot and then run ruu to install the latest hboot? If you downgraded to 1.12 you should have no problem running lazy panda. Am I missing something?
On unlimited's site it says the rom requirements to run lazy panda is 1.13 RUU. I was confused on that as well but it hasn't been successful. I'm currently 1.12 hboot with 1.22 software version. So at this point just run the lazy panda?
Someone in mac's development thread stated they were able to run lazy panda on 1.12. You should ask about it in that thread and see if anyone can help
i ran it out of the box no RUU just ran it
Was that you that mentioned it then? I was having a hard time remembering who mentioned it lol
WHOO HOO! I'm S-Off!!! Ok am I finally ready for customer roms etc and I guess i need to flash radios of course.
edit: Thanks guys!
Let me know what customer roms u install. Those sound interesting.

Basically, if you ever have an issue with your phone and doing a reset doesn't help you....you can run this file through your computer and it will reinstall everything as if you never opened the box....its more useful for people that flash custom Roms due to the fact that sometimes flashes go horribly wrong and ONLY option is to have this file to restore phone. Hope that explains it a bit. In your case good to have but if you plan on staying completely stock you prompt won't need it.

Your Hboot will be updated to 2.09, but you'll still have S-off. You'll have to re-root your phone after running the RUU.

After I successfully complete the RUU, Google Play gives a server error. Google Now doesn't work. Google Wallet gives another error message of its own. Google Talk will not sign in. Yet, Gmail and YouTube work perfectly fine despite being slightly outdated due to no Play store there updating them. I have tried every suggestion from factory resetting to clearing cache for Google play framework under apps. Even signing in and out of my Google account doesn't work. Please help!
I just wanted to know if that ruu works fine or there is any issues with it? Thanks.

fair warning to all, this update has been known to cause issues. there's a good chance it will break root, turn S on or update your Hboot. even if you jusy flash the radio. If you want to keep your Hboot or root, check out the androidforums LTEvo root section.

Interesting. Yes, updating with the RUU (or the JB update in general) will cause you to lose root, but all you have to do is dev unlock your phone and root it once again. There have been no reports here thus far of anybody losing S-off by upgrading to the newest Hboot, as long as they were S-off prior to upgrading. Also, there have been no reports of any issues upgrading the radio or other firmware, assuming somebody didn't flash the wrong file in their bootloader and update everything, including their Hboot. I don't know what's being said over on other forums, but I keep up pretty well on here. The only known issue has to do with system write issues for users who are S-on with Hboot 2.09, and there is already a fix for that. It even appears as though Dirty Racun may work to gain S-off with the newest Hboot

The man speaks the truth!

Updating firmware...S-OFF or OTA

Hey guys, i have a bit of a dilemma.
My phone has been running MeanRom 6.5 (or whatever the latest ICS version) since forever essentially. I have hboot 1.5 and am not s-off so I can't update my firmware so I've never upgraded to jellybean roms. My phone has been kind of destabilizing for a while now, but Im on vacation and it's just impossible to use now. Everything crashes, phone and messaging work maybe once or twice a day. Restarts are common, etc. I tried re-flashing my current ROM and it didn't really help.
So, I desperately want to update my firmware. I know I could use dirtyracun to go s-off and flash a new firmware, but I'm on vacation and don't have my pc which has a linux partition, and my laptop has no cd drive or any way to run linux for dirtyracun (because it requires linux, correct?). That and I've played around with DR before and had some trouble figuring it out. Not that it would be "impossible' to do, but i'd have to wait a little while just to give it a shot.
I was also wondering if it was possible to recieve OTA updates if I were to re-lock my bootloader? Probably have to go flash a stock ROM, right? Is this possible? I know I'd be screwing myself over in terms of going s-off, but i mean, hell, if it gets me a stable rom and updated radios then I can live with it.
Any suggestions would be awesome and appreciated!
I would S-off using Facepalm, which is Windows friendly. Then you can update your firmware to the latest version, and go from there

I am guessing it is for Tmobile?
I have that same version.
It disables revone or moonshine for working so essentially s-off.
I was able to still unlock the bootloader via HTCDev and root using TWRP and SuperSU.
Not really sure what s-off does, since I am able to load custom roms and etc. with current setup anyways....
....
S-off lets us convert to the full GPE version and get ota. I hope devs find a way of getting s-off on 531.11

s-off is security check off. it stops the bootloader from checking for signatures pretty much letting you flash Whatever aslong as the recovery accepts it. can also turn off the recoveries signature check but thats alot easier to do as the recovery alows you to do so freely.
And anyone wouldnt happen to know more info on this would they. as ive noticed sense i did the manual OTA update via HTC's site, regaining s-off is proving to be imensley didficult. "i s-on'd whiel debugging things and regret it lol"
From what I have been able to gather the updated 1.44 or 1.54 cannot be s-offed using revone or moonshine currently.
I'm pretty happy right now, all I care about is GPe 4.3 anyways. Running of 4.3 ROM, firmware, and radio with just unlocked boot loader
