What do you get from rooting your htc? Will it slow down your device if you just choose to root it but not install any custom rom on it? And is it possible to unroot and what happens if i fail to root?
EDIT: If im in Singapore (Asia) , do i download the WWE ASIA RUU ? is that correct? for unrooting

As mentioned, I'm sure there are pages on the internet more qualified than I am at explaining it, but from an average person's perspective, rooting should not be slowing down your phone at all.
In fact, rooting allows you to access the system level files, which allows you to delete some default apps and programs that could actually be slowing down your phone.
Some apps can reach further in your phone with root access, which allows you to get more customization and functionality out of your phone.
I'm not very experienced in this, but I believe unrooting your phone involves re-wiping it, but I'm not sure. Don't quote me on this one.
Depending on the severity of your mistake during the rooting process, you can either brick your phone (the worst option, and rather unlikely if you follow directions carefully) or nothing will happen and your phone is still un-rooted.
That's the best I have.
Unrooting will wipe your device because you have to relock the bootloader and run the RUU which will update your phone and return it to stock.
Rooting should give you benefits if you flash a custom ROM and kernal.

There is no need to relock BL and flash and RUU to unroot.
Just delete superuser.apk/SuperSU.apk from /system/app/ and SU from /system/xbin/ and your unrooted.

I got a clarification on root.
If I just unlock the bootloader from htcdev, can I use adb tools to push the supersuer.apk into /system/app?. Does this method require a stock ATT boot.img?
I know there is no recovery for ATT, so don't want to brick the phone, but I wanted to know if unlocking the bootloader will give R/W on system partition or does a insecure boot.img needs to be flashed?
Any help?

TWRP has a revocery up for the ATT HOX+
I dont believe there are any ATT safe roms yet though.
I plan on only unlocking the bootloader from HTCdev (in fear that att might stop that over the air) and then just wait around a bit until a safe rom shows up.

I just flashed the su binary for arm from that page, and I can see it on the file system, yet all apps say I don't have root.

OK, just flashed the newer RC one that includes Superuser and it worked. You're safe to do so.

I'll second that, I was able to root my AT&T HOX+ with the All-in-one. I'm a newbie at this, and am having trouble flashing ROMS on, but I'll try and figure it out at some point. Over in the "Android Development" section, a couple of people posted ROMs that should work with the AT&T and Telus versions. I'm not sure what S-off is, but is this keeping me from flashing ROMS?
Without flashing a custom kernel for that Rom first yes. This is why I hate having b new phone after the initial launch. All the good stuff is still in alpha and beta. Waited 6 months to get the inspire then a year to root it. Just for those reasons but I was late to the party as devs moved on. Sick twisted games we play

I have done some research as to how I would go about rooting this phone but I'm a little confused to say the least. Let me first say that I am on a mac and the first phone I rooted was Inspire. This was also the last phone I rooted because of how complicated it was. My main question is does unlocking the bootloader mean that the phone is rooted and I can just install a rom? If so how would I install a rom after unlocking the bootloader? Is there anything else I should be doing? As I said I'm very unsure how to go about this so any information is appreciated. Thanks.

No. All unlocking the bootloader does is remove security protection on certain partitions. After you unlock the bootloader, you need to flash a custom recovery from fastboot. Once you have a custom recovery, you can use it to either flash a rooted update.zip or a rooted custom rom.

As a person who bricked allot of phones learning, if you don't you don't understand how the process works or understand how to do it, I would leave your phone alone. The benefits you gain from rooting wouldn't benefit you much. If you skip a step or do something wrong you will end up with a nice paper weight. Not trying to discourage you, it is your phone after all.

It is really quite difficult to brick an HTC phone that doesn't have S-OFF. As long as the bootloader is there, there is always a path to restore the phone's functionality.

I'm hoping to find a step by step guide to walk me through exactly how I would go about this. For example I know I have to flash a rom but what rom should I be flashing? Now I know this is a matter of option but I guess I'm asking what has the least amount of bugs, best stability/battery life, etc. I know you need a kernel but is that something that gets installed when I flash a rom or does that need to be done separately. The main reason for doing this is customization, battery life and actually getting updates the os. Again any input is appreciated.

Maybe there is a tutorial in android dev. I'm not sure tho. The which rom is the best question is kinda frowned on here, i've seen mods close threads for it. It's just asking to start a flame war.
The kernel is also known as the boot.img. you will find it inside the rom.zip for any custom rom. Untill we have S-Off it cannot be flashed with the rest of the rom in recovery. You need to extract it and flash it from fastboot using the command "fastboot flash boot boot.img".

I apologize I wasn't trying to start anything. I just really don't have any idea as to which rom would suit my needs best so I was just looking for advice/opinions from people who are more knowledgeable then me.
Now you said I would need to extract the kernel, is the kernel in a zip file with the rom that after extracted I would both flash separately? I believe fastboot is the screen with the solid black background and the yellow text with options is that correct? "fastboot flash boot boot.img" is that a option I would select or is that a command I need enter? Sorry for all of the questions I just want to be clear on exactly what I need to do as I don't want to make my phone unusable.
I've been having interest issues so the only access I have is my phone. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next couple of days so I can check out the development section for a tutorial on rooting.

pretty sure you can unlock the bootloader straight up on the HTC dev site.

Yeah thats what I did. I also followed the tutorial in the android development forum.
Edit: I'm gonna go for the M7 version because it says M7 in the bootloader. Wish me luck!
Yeah I'm wondering that too, do we use the M7 version or the ATT one? I'm assuming the M7 because the Tmo version is no different than the international version.
I used the m7 version last night. Worked great. Note sitting on the stock firmware with cwm touch and root. Needed to get rid of all the junk apps

Just want root access, not the custom recovery/ROMs
I'd like to have root access to my HTC One, so that I can use Titanium Backup. That's really the only reason I rooted my Tmobile Samsung Vibrant (for that, I used SuperOneClick).

Getting Soff can unlock you boot loader and if u do it through htc devs it unlocks your our boot loader but keeps Son but it's you use revone , it would unlock Son to soff and you are able to change CID and flash radios thru hboot but you can flash any rom that is compatible to the htc one but just unlocking the bootloader. You don't necessary need soff to flash Roma but it's good to have off thru if u want to return you phone back to the carrier and remove Tampered and return done back to stock !!!!

I'm not sure the last post was clear for a NOOB. S-On / Off refers to the security of the device. With S-On, the phone will only allow you to flash things built for your device. This prevents you from messing up the phone by flashing the wrong stuff or wrong area of the memory.
You can unlock your phone without S-Off, root it, and flash any ROMs you like, so long as they are for your particular phone model.

so I have an AT&T HTC one, wanted to know, if i root it - will i be able to install any ROM?
because i saw a thread about CONVERTING it to EU version, and i was wondering why and if i must do it in order to root.
so basically:
1. is the rooting on the AT&T HTC one done differently from any other HTC one?
2. if not, do i still have to go through this conversion guide or can i just root it normally?
2. how can i install a stock, clean ROM without all the AT&T rubbish, and have the OTA updates like on any other normal android?

If you want to install any ROM, basically u need to unlock bootloader, s-off and change cid to supercid and well root the phone.
