Please post Your temp. of phone during casual usage. Not hard playing games. Just plain internet surfing, camera using, video capture, calls. Just for statistics.
I can say, after 12 measurements, that:
During casual use i have 26/28° C
In stand-by my temperature is 21° C
Playing a tegra 3 game for 30 mins 46/49° C
However I think the values are also affected by the ambient temperature in which the phone operates. Mine is 18° C

I was curious about the max temperature for the CPU as I see many of these profiles setting up a reduction in OC if > 40. My problem is that I cannot maintain a temp below 40 with anything higher than 480 yet I see many people running 600-729. Could anyone shed some light on this for me.

The sustained max temperature you will see depends on what you are doing. Particularly if you have one or more radios going, you will experience high temperatures. For instance, streaming audio over the Mobile network or using tethering (WiFi tethering is the worst), it is trivial for the battery temperature to go above 50 C.
I saw 55 C once on my phone with a stock HTC 2.1 ROM (528 Mhz max) - I was streaming music, running a WiFi wardriving app, and also running the Nav app simultaneously on a 3 hr drive - in warm weather.
Unless someone on this board works as a thermal design engineer for HTC, it will be impossible for them to tell you what is too much - they would have to know what the thermal path from the processor to the battery is, and that's pretty much an impossible thing to guess at without pretty detailed calculations.
I set my temperature clamp profile to kick in at T > 50C; below that temperature, my phone runs at 768Mhz when it is fully charged. I would say that using the phone "normally" (as in extended internet browsing (reading, not video), texting, short phone calls), I rarely see my battery temperature above 40C.

My current setup is as follows

The battery often reaches temperatures in the 40s (Celsius) and the CPU in the 50s.
This happens when I do normal activities like web browsing or texting.
I don't experience battery drain when using my phone as a feature phone.
If I play games, even the simplest ones like Angry Birds or Dragon Fly, my battery hits 45+ C and my processor into the high 50s. The battery drains almost 1% every 2 minutes when doing this.
If I listen to music (through headphones with Google Music app from the market and offline music), I lose 1% every 6 minutes (almost exactly) even with the screen off and device unused for that period.
My idle battery life is perfectly fine, often only losing 1-2%/hr without use.
Is this normal?
its extremely normal... lots of threads like this(could have searched?) if you want to improve it underclock. Also your phone will shut off automatically if it gets too hot so don't worry
i'm running CM7 and underclocked to 608 mhz and runs everything with no problem even some games then i crank it up if its really necessary in those settings my phone barely gets hot and has good battery life
As a new owner of the Z5C (rly impressed so far ) I couldn't help but notice the heat, courtesy of the SD810 I assume.
So i've started monitoring the temps for the past few days with CPU-Z and Cpu Temperature.
For the most part while doing everyday tasks such as phone calls, news, music, Whatsapp and so on the temperature is around 30-40ish which seems reasonable and causes no concern.
Whilst doing something more intense such as running a game, installing/updating app, or recording video the temperature jumps to around 45-60 which again seems reasonable.
There are sudden momentary (2 second) spikes to 70's 80's usually while doing heavy R/W tasks such as installing an app.
Battery temps usually hover around high 20's to mid 30's whilst doing normal tasks and during more intense tasks can jump up to around 40ish.
I was wondering if other users here who also bothered to monitor their thermals are experiencing similar results or not?
Also am curious to know if someone knows what the msm_thresh threshold is for the Z5C i've noticed mine topping at around 41..

I have been getting pretty much similar results, albeit a bit lower temps due to disabling a few cores. Those temps are perfectly fine, as long as the battery dosen't get to the high 40's. The throttling stats when the battery reaches 43°C and clears when it get down to 41°C, you can find the throttling thresholds in the file called thermal-engine.conf located in /system/etc/
A YouTuber recently done a video regarding does switching to a lower resolution actually save you battery. The answer? NO! It's just a myth.

Did you switch it to a lower resolution after turning it off though?
I didn't bother looking at the video sorry but, reducing the resolution does help with battery life, just not in a direct way.
When you're just browsing social media or replying to emails having a higher/lower resolution does nothing, as its mostly the CPU doing the heavy lifting here, but when you're watching videos or playing games, lowering the resolution will result in less GPU usage and sometimes also the CPU, which in result would consume less power.
For regular daily use the resolution won't make much of a difference, but if you're someone who consumes lots of Netflix or HDR videos, maybe play games like Pubg, fortnite or whatever a lot, you'll appreciate the little extra minutes lowering the resolution would give you, not to mention the extra performance that comes with it, as the GPU has less pixels to calculate.
The same concept applies to computers as well, its actually what Im basing my explanation on, but to get a precise results you'll have to do some tests/benchmarks with controlled variables.
If you play lots of games or watch lots of videos, you might wanna have the resolution at 1080p, otherwise 1440p will do just fine, the difference isn't that huge unless you're constantly forcing the GPU.
You wont with normal use. But you will with playing games at lower resolution, not to mention having a better frame rate!

I'm on android 12 , and phone gets abbormally hot while normal activities like browsing web, watching YouTube etc. But surprisingly during gaming it doesn't heat that much. Temperatures rise upto 37 degrees while normal activities
