2gb data plan to unlimited data plan at no additional cost - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I will try and make this short and too the point but its important to understand the details. I used to have the Motorola DROID X with the nationwide talk and text 450 mins with unlimited data. My 2 year contract was over and I was eligible for an upgrade so for christmas my parents wanted to get me a new phone. I told them I wanted this note 2 that I now currently have. The tried to purchase the phone at the upgraded price under my account from verizon but because I had to sign a new contract the couldnt do it with out me present. We then went to the Verizon store and purchased the phone at the contract price and I had to sign changing my plan to the 2gb data share everything plan. It is now the 16th of January and I have received numerous txt messages saying I may incure charges for data usage so today I called up verizon and told them I wanted to go back to my old plan with unlimited data because of these messages they were sending me. They said it was past the 15 day period and that I cant return the phone I then told the man on the phone that I didnt want to return the phone I wanted to keep the phone and to tell me how much money I would have to give them so I could keep the phone and go back to my old plan. The gentleman said he didnt know. I said I would pay the difference of the full retail price to the contract price so I could go back to the old plan. After some back and forth and some hold time he then told me he would have to fill out a form so that upstairs can review it and accept or deny my request. So then I asked to his supervisor because I did not like his solution he put me back on hold and then came back and said ok my supervisor said to go ahead and change the plan back to your old 450 nationwide talk and unlimited txt and data so I said great how much do I owe you to keep my phone now and the gentleman said nothing I was surprised so I asked him again... I dont have to pay full retail price to keep my phone and go back to my old plan???? He then said again no my supervisor said to just go ahead and change the plan over with no additional fees. So i said great he put me on hold changed my plan back over then asked if there was anything else he could help me with today. I then assured him he was great and got off the phone egger to see if what he was telling me was true i went online checked my account and to my surprise immediately my account was back to my 450 nationwide talk with unlimited txt and data. So after about an hour and a half on the phone with verizon I now have the samsung galaxy note 2 at contract price with 450 nationwide talk with unlimited txt and data. I couldnt be happier......... thoughts people...... has anyone experienced something similar?

You are a rarity. Once you change they don't want to give unlimited back. The paper work is simple since if you go from a 4g to a 3g phone you will lose unlimited every time and that is how they get it back.
Next time you will have to pay full price if they still allow us to have it by then.

Yea I was surprised. I went from 3g to 4g and still have 4g now after going back to unlimited data so yeah I was extremely happy to say the least I thought for sure I was gunna have to pay full price for the phone. I couldnt see why they wouldnt allow me to go back to my original plan if I paid full price for the phone. I mean I had that option before buying the phone at contact price. The verizon deff did one better for me this time... ANOTHER TWO YEARS UNLIMITED DATA!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!

I'm very skeptical this happened at all.

Those who chose to stay with unlimited, doesn't Verizon throttle your speeds after you go over 3gb these days?

Same thing happened with me. I lost my unlimited when t mobile ported my number over 15 days earlier than promised. (I was trying the service out in my area... Sucked)
It took 20 calls to winback and customer service to have a form request filled out and reviewed from another dept.
After about 5 business days they finally restored my unlimited data... Thank god bc I'd never survive on 2gb.

Only if you have a 3G only phone, and only if you're in a "high-demand" area.

No and when they do throttle, it is 3G only.
Edit:
I was late to this party.

I have been trying to do the same thing since Dec 21st.Refund the 299.99 and bill me full price. They keep telling that I can't go back since my old plan since it does not exist anymore.I have talked to 5 or 6 people so far and get the same story.I sent a email to the Vp of US customer service hoping to hear back from his office.
I sent a link to this thread to Verizon on their Facebook page and Via email to show that it can be done and that they are just giving me the run around.

It most certainly did and yes I was extremely surprised idk if my loyalty to the company has anything to do with it as I am a customer for aprox 13 years now. However I was told I could purchase the phone at retail price and keep my plan in the beginning so I couldnt see how they wouldnt allow me to do that even right after I renewed my contract they still got a contract renewal out of me.... I dont know what to tell you I just posted this to see if anyone else was as lucky as I believe it if u want dont if u don't want to it makes no difference to me... all I know is I didnt pay full retail price for my phone and I still have unlimited data

Way lucky.... I gave up my unlimited data and went with the 4gb plan. I am on wifi most of the time and typically used anout 1.25gb of data per month so it wasn't a huge loss but would have been nice to keep.

Yea I use right around 2gb but Im not near wifi most the time ( never home ) its fine for now but there are times where I may hit 3gbs and who knows how much data phones will be using in years to come there should be no reason to have a phone bill over $100 a month
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app

I had reverted back to unlimited as well. But they charged the difference for the remainder of the full price of the phone to my Verizon account. My bill ended up being like 650. That was the remainder of the cost of the phone unsubsidized and my monthly bill combined. I was aware that they would do this.

This. Done it many times with Iphone's back to Android's and vice versa. Data is data. You're not changing the plan.

no go
tried this today... got my old plan back but not the unlimited data oh well at least my monthly bill went down

I'm suprised they did this. You chose to re-new your contract and give up unlimited data. No one forced you to do this. You must have gotten a manager on a good day.

Verizon clarifies the unlimited data situation

Just thought I'd give this it's own thread, so everyone knows what's up.
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/17/verizon-clarifies-shared-data-plans/
– Customers will not be automatically moved to new shared data plans. If a 3G or 4G smartphone customer is on an unlimited plan now and they do not want to change their plan, they will not have to do so.
– When we introduce our new shared data plans, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to customers when purchasing handsets at discounted pricing.
– Customers who purchase phones at full retail price and are on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan.
– The same pricing and policies will be applied to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones.
So, unlimited data is dead, but only when you upgrade after the cutoff date. If you buy full-price phones or used phones, your data is safe. They're also not going to confiscate it.

I agree that it's total BS, but you can get Rezounds for like 250 bucks on Swappa or Craigslist and it's only been 6 months. If you're willing to wait a bit for a phone, the prices drop fast. Basically this isn't the kiss of death it could have been.

I am not sure I agree. When Verizon wants us to pay full retail price for a device to keep unlimited, I doubt they'll be okay with us just activating a new device purchased outside of their system.

Well we don't actually know. But we do know there will be a provision that will allow a new device to be activated on an unlimited line. How exactly though will they enforce the policy is the question. It would seem very logistically difficult to preclude used phones, but who knows.

they wont have to activate anything in the store anymore, you will be doing the sim card swap yourself if you want to keep your unlimited data

They should as long as the line has the insurance/extra warranty coverage, and you don't cancel it, they should honor it on any phone on that line. I would get pretty irate if I'm paying for that service and then they don't honor it.

Good luck with the nations slowest network. Average Download speeds on the galaxy nexus are between 1mb-1.5mb lol. No LTE until 2013-2014. Have fun
yeah they were talking about this in the other thread. it does suck having to buy a phone for full price but at least then we don't have to keep signing away 2 more years of our lives to verizon.

Upgrade does not kill Unlimited Data

Just pre-ordered a GS3 using my upgrade discount. My unlimited data is intact. I called back after the pre-order to verify, and I was assured that my plan still has Unlimited Data, and will KEEP unlimited data until such time that I change plans.
The rumor that you lose Unlimited data when upgrading is just that, a rumor. According to both the CS rep, and the Customer Loyalty department, the only way to lose Unlimited data is to drop it from your account by changing plans, once you do that, you will not be able to get it back.
hope that helps some of you out there, worried about losing it.
I hope thats true, ive kept reading after the 28 you couldnt keep it if u upgrade through them...but i have another year left so im not tooo worried about it yet
No it is NOT a rumor and has been posted in Verizons official documents. What you were told was wrong.

lol i can 150% guarantee you'll lose it.
every phone i've started to upgrade since june 28th shows a big red box that opens saying ALERT: and then explains how the customer is now losing unlimited data, and gives us the box to check for 2 gigs for 30/mo. it WILL NOT let us proceed in the system without checking the new 2 gig box.
unlimited data is GONE as of june 28th.
As I understandi it, you have to be on a family plan to get bumped on an upgrade. Individual plans can still upgrade and keep unlimited.

well for those that "guarantee" that I will lose it, I guess Ill just have to post a screen shot of my bill in a few weeks when the phone gets here.
I was -very- specific with 2 CS reps, and then Customer loyalty (the department that deals with you when you are about to cancel)
I told them that if I was going to lose my unlimited data plan then I was going to cancel my service. Both CS reps I spoke to assured me I would not lose it.
Not being satisfied with that response, I asked to speak to the customer loyalty department.
She assured me that they are not canceling unlimited data plans for anyone. Unless 3 people at VZW are lying to me, (and I will know soon enough) then I feel confident that my plan is in-tact.
I don't know what to tell you. I suppose I could record a phone call and then post the audio for you to hear? lol

Unlimited data contract verbiage request

I'm looking for the actual contract text, not someone's summary. This is because someone said that even unlimited data was capped at 5gb and that this fact was well known. The agreement I've found here only says that " if you use an extraordinary amount of data and fall within the top 5% of Verizon Wireless data users we may reduce your data throughput speeds periodically for the remainder of your then current and immediately following billing cycle to ensure high quality network performance for other users at locations and times of peak demand." I can't find the 5gb number anywhere. That was updated in February, so that may be why. I joined Verizon after unlimited was ended for new subs, so I can't look at mine. Thanks.
There are people here that use 10-20GB+... was even one person that had a little over 1TB of data used...
It's not capped at 5GB, the 5GB number was for tethering if you paid the extra $30 for the tethering application.

I know that, that's actually why I'm looking for this. I think unlimited is unlimited and these people are not abusing anything. (I'm not saying VZW ending unlimited is wrong, just the justification they gave, namely abuse and network congestion [since they throttle the heavy users during that time anyway])

There is no set number for unlimited data. That 5 gb is just an arbitrary number people have been throwing around here for a long time as to what was the top 5% number Verizon would use to slow down your data speed. I've exceeded it without any problems many times as have many others so its baseless.
I may have my receipt with the contract on it in the box for my Rezound, I'll see what I can come up with.

That's what I thought, but had no proof. I just get tired of people criticizing other people for using their bandwidth as much as they want. And, as it turns out, Verizon shouldn't've even been able to stop them from tethering, according to the FCC. I just wish Verizon would come out and say "we think we can make more money by ending unlimited data, so that's what we're doing". They won't, but I wish they would.

I've exceeded it without any problems many times as have many others so its baseless.

It was on Verizon's website it said if you have an unlimited plan you cant use it excessively. Excessive things include streaming video and downloading large files etc. If you use over 5 GB in a month you are using excessive amounts of data and your account can be terminated at our descretion basically. I read that from the Verizon website awhile ago, so its not arbitrary

I'm constantly over 10 GB worth of data per month. Last month was like 16+. Can they really terminate you for "excessive" use? Better start using WiFi more lol got spoiled with unlimited data.

I guess they could but they haven't done it at all yet. Maybe in a year or so they'll do that to get rid of unlimited data forever tho

That looks like a feature of the ROM, you can change the limit, or just leave it alone. It's designed for people with an actual cap to avoid overages.

You know I've been worried about that ever since they got rid of truely unlimited and went to data packages. They better not do away with the grandfathered in plans. Wouldn't be surprised if they did tho.

So far I haven't seen anything beyond hearsay that there was an actual limit to unlimited.
But if there was, that's crap. A company shouldn't be allowed to call it unlimited if it's got a limit. That seems like a truth-in-advertising issue.
And by the way, if streaming video is excessive, why did they get the rights to NFL mobile whose main draw is streaming video? It's just disingenuous to advertise something if you're not going to allow people to use it.

unlimited doesnt mean its capped at 5g. but in the older contracts they defined "unlimited data" as 5gb

Kept my unlimited plan when I upgraded on 01/06/13

I was able to keep my unlimited data plan when I upgraded to the note II
Found a neighborhood wireless Verizon vendor at the mall and he made his phone pitch and i said I probably won't use the upgrade since I didn't want to lose my unlimited plan. The guy then asked what phone I wanted (this was last october) I told him I didn't even know what phones where out since upgrading was not an option
He then told me what if there was a way of keeping my unlimited plan would I then buy from him. I laughed and said sure... He then viewed my account and then told me that one of my lines was up in the following week (which was november) and my line was up in January. He told me to comeback in a few days with a phone in mind and he would help me out.
The line that was up was my sisters and I told her about it and she was willing to be the guinea pig. We went back the following week with my sister wanting an Iphone they did the whole process and sure enough her plan stayed at unlimited data.
Someone advised me to look at my online, physical, and app statements for the next 3 months just to verify the plan stayed unlimited and that they didn't pull some shady move. The plan stayed unlimited all 3 months.
So I went back with the note 2 in mind and this time someone else that knew the loophole was there and she helped me out as well this time I watched the process. Apparently they pull 2 phones out from stock the phone you want and a phone that doesn't require a data plan they scan the dataless phone and she showed me ok look just so you know there's your unlimited plan still in tact then they scan the phone your buying to complete the process that's what I was able to see.
There was a catch which was I had to buy 50 bucks in accessories which I didn't mind since I needed a case and I got the other box defender

could you explain the process as to how they keep the unlimited? They scan a data-less phone and put it on your account? And then they switch it to the new phone?

Oh snaps. I live in NorCal but travel down south numerous times each year. I should get this info from you!

The vendor is just upgrading a line of yours to a regular phone and then just doing a hardware swap on eroes or whatever system they're using. You're keeping your unlimited data this way but the vendor is pretty much screwing themselves over. Verizon isn't going to pay them on the backend for the subsidies on the phone. The $50 catch is pretty much just so they can increase their accessory attach rates.
I know this cause I work for best buy mobile and we just fired some idiot for doing this during the holidays
---------- Post added at 05:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:49 AM ----------
No to double post, but there are better ways to keep your unlimited data. If you have a family plan and an old data less phone, upgrade a basic phone line and then (after you leave the store), swap that number onto your old dumb phone and then just put your 4g sim card into the new phone. If you dont have a sim card, just buy a blank sim from Verizon. By hardware swapping, youve dropped that new $30 data plan for the other line and you've switched onto a 4g phone and kept unlimited data
you can use another lines upgrade on your plan and keep unlimited data...however nobody on your plan including yourself can use the upgrade on your line without losing unlimited. this is nothing new alot of us have been doing this for a bit now. Enjoy the note2 its a great device!
I have 2 phones on Family Plan
I have 2 Verizon phones on a 8 gb shared data plan. How do I get this to actually work?

I did something similar to keep my data. I called customer service and asked to talk to customer retention. I then told them that I was wanting to keep my unlimited data and was thinking about pulling my 4 phone lines to unlimited sprint. They had me pick a phone since my line was up for renewal. They activated it on my wifes line as a transfer phone. After that they activated it on me line as a transfer phone too and reactivated my wifes original phone on her line. I was guaranteed to keep unlimited and I still have it. This was back in December.

I would just switch one of the upgrades to another line that doesn't have the upgrade then switch the note II to your line. Before you do this, ask Verizon. I know transferring an upgrade from a line with unlimited data to a line that doesn't have it works since I triple checked with Verizon (which worked when I did it in December)

Verizon: Grandfathered Unlimited Data is the only data plan worth having

This is not specific to the Verizon Galaxy S4, but it is indeed the only reason I will preorder the Verizon version tomorrow (as opposed to switching to another carrier).

I imagine that's the only scenario in which I would go with Verizon's GS4. Right now their most attractive offer is $70/month for 3G speed, 2GB of data, and unlimited talk/text. Pretty much worthless in my eyes.
Too bad we have to wait 30+ damn days longer than everyone else because they're morons.

Agreed, especially when T-Mobile offers unlimited everything for the same cost (technically cheaper because I know T-Mobile has smaller fees and taxes).

They're not morons. They know exactly what they're doing with those dates.
On a serious note though: Nevertheless, somehow still worth the wait just to have the number 1 wireless network in the country. Come on, is our impatience really worth getting mad at them?
I agree. Paying the extra $450 to get it off contract will MORE than pay itself back bay keeping the unlimited plan. I use my Vulkano Box to placeshift to my phone or tether to my tablet and watch on that. I'm using close to 8 GB a month. Nothing close to you, but enough to pay off contract and keep my plan is well worth it.
I have grandfathered unlimited for $63/month. But youre saying that Verizon gets the S4 a month later than everyone else? Don't know if I can wait that long.

You're really willing to give up a carrier (especially arguably the best carrier service available at this time that you won't be able to get back ever again after losing it) all because you can't wait one more month for a phone?
If you're going to go down that route you should consider not wasting away that service of yours and selling your line to someone else to take over. Grandfathered Unlimited Data plans on Verizon are as good as gold right now.
These eBay results speak for themselves: Link Here
And these are all the completed sale to give you an idea how much you can make on it: Link Here
I have two unlimited data lines that I took over for free last year right before they took away the upgrades. I bought an iPhone 4s and managed to preorder the galaxy s3 because both lines were eligible for upgrdes at the time. I consider myself lucky. I tether and share with my ATT friends at work I burn like 30gb a month verizon has never bothered me. I'm thinking Bout going to t mobile though to cut down on my bill and get gsm nexus phones

Wow, I didn't even know it was possible to purchase Grandfather plans from other people. Kind of tempting actually, but I'd hold off until I had more scratch. As it is, I'm buying the GS4 for full retail+accessories+new monthly data plan. Good to know it's an open option though.
Wow, Assuming that is mostly streaming video? I don't think I watch that much video on my HTPC a month at 8 to 12 GB per movie, lol. Must be nice having that kind of free time on your hands.
I tether to my gaming laptop to play online games I think it burns a lot of data. Also I use xbmc to stream movies and do some Torrenting. I might skip out on gs4 and wait to see a phone with that snapdragon 800 chip I'm very interested in the quickcharge 2.0 it has that they decided to leave out on the 600 sadly

Specific rule Verizon enforced. 3G to 4G basically means new contract to them even if you buy the phone full price they have to "upgrade" your plan as well to allow you to connect to LTE: Details Here

So the link above is good info, but is there any more detail missing? I've got unlimited LTE on my Galaxy Nexus and plan on pre-ordering the S4 tomorrow at full retail 649.99. Is there anything to be cautious of when placing the order?
I shouldn't have to change plans or anything, but is there anyway I could screw this up?

Does that mean I lose my unlimited either way since I only have 3g right now, even if I buy without a new contract?
My sister in law went from the droid x to the Verizon galaxy nexus last month and did NOT lose unlimited. She just went and picked up a Sims card and popped the ***** in. Took maybe 2 minutes for the phone to be fully functional. Her plan wasn't changed at all. If you take upgrade price you will lose it

Pretty much it's simple. To avoid losing your unlimited data you have to meet the below requirements:
Be already on an LTE device with an unlimited data plan
Purchase your new device all full retail or on the new device payment plan (dividing full price into 12 monthly payments)
Avoid using an "upgrade" on the line you have unlimited data on at all costs!!
Try to avoid making any little other unrelated changes in your service (you never want to give them a excuse to force you over to tiered)
If you have other lines that can upgrade (like family plans) you can use their upgrade to get the device at the cheaper price and then just swap your microSIM card into it

Unfortunately it appears to be the case. But who knows, maybe if you yell loudly enough and threaten to leave Verizon unless they can confirm they will keep your unlimited data, maybe someone will be able to do some "behind-the-scenes magic" and transition over for you. But in all reality, without a serious fight for it I wouldn't count on keeping it if you upgrade even at full price.
Well if I spend $650 on the phone, I damn well will scream at them if they tell me I still lose unlimited. I'm going to have to try to find out before I do anything I guess, not like I have anything else to do for 36 damn days.

See I guess there it is. I am never really in a situation anymore where I would tether my laptop. Our laptop is four years old and basically sits at the end of our kitchen table. We are pretty much 100% tablets for mobile computing now. I don't have time for in depth games much anymore. Work/gym/kids eats all my time. And if I am going to sit and "do computer", I am going to do it in the study in a proper chair with a proper keyboard, a big monitor, a mouse, and fast tower pc. Laptops have been squeezed out of my personal life by the superior overall experience of a real desktop set up and the superior portability of a tablet. Don't get me wrong...my work computer is a laptop, but I don't see much need for one for personal stuff the way my life is set up now.
I guess if I were a single twenty-something it would be different, but really, I don't have much of a need for big data mobile computing.
