Working Gmail - KFHD 7" - 7" Kindle Fire HD Themes and Apps

As some will have noticed the latest version of Gmail 4.2.1 & 4.1.2 doesn't exactly play nice with the Kindle Fire HD, if you have notifications on & you get a e-mail the whole top bar will disappear for a short while, so to prevent that from happening you have to turn off notifications on Gmail which isn't very productive.
Anyway I tried the version before those and found 4.0.5 works perfectly fine, notifications & all, sure you don't have some of the fancy new features of the latest build but it does work very well as a e-mail app, currently using it now no issues.
You can get it from here - http://www.androiddrawer.com/1412/download-gmail-4-0-5-app-apk/

What KFHD software version are you on?
Everytime I've tested it (4.2.1) the same thing happens with the notifications, it's a strange issue.
I'm on the latest 7.2.3 (Rooted).

Appellant work for me. I installed this on my Kindle, and it launches, then closes immediately. I don't have it rooted so is that part of the problem?

You'll need GoogleLoginService & GoogleServicesFramework for it to function properly, can be a bit buggy without root especially when trying to get syncing to work but I've used Gmail OK before rooting.

I'm guessing that I would need to root the Kindle to install those. (I'm really new with this, so sorry if this is a stupid question.)

No, Gmail & the other two GoogleLoginService & GoogleServicesFramework can be installed without root & work to a certain degree, it's only the syncing that can be problematic as for it to work flawlessly it needs the AccountAndSyncSettings.apk to be in system/app folder which does require root but if you just wanna check your e-mail occasionally you can install the 3 apks in bold listed above.
You can get a working Gmail APK from here - http://www.androiddrawer.com/1412/download-gmail-4-0-5-app-apk/
Get the other two APKs from here (Link at the bottom of 1st post) & install those first - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069329

Thanks, I'll try them out and post the results.

OK, I installed the apks you could install without root. They installed fine and I could enter in the info needed to sync. As I was doing this though, I got messages popping up that were saying (insert app name here) has stopped. Gmail started to launch, but then it quit with a Gamit has stopped. Any ideas? (In the mean time, i will uninstall both incase it causes more problems.)

It's a while since I had them installed whilst unrooted but they did work, I had other Google apps as well such as YouTube & Drive, Gmail isn't the most stable unrooted, like I said it has trouble with sync, anyway try installing the just the 2 Services APKs, reboot then install Gmail & see what happens then if you want.

The same thing happened like before I installed the 2 Google framework packages. Doesn't even launch.

Oh, and I have one more question. If I delete the framework files that keep it synced, it will remove the account from the device making you have to sign in again. Right?

If you uninstall/delete the 2 service APKs, none of the Google apps will function.
To remove Google accounts, clear the data for Gmail & the 2 service APKs in Kindle settings.
Kindle Settings > Applications > Installed Applications:
Google Account Manager (Think this is the only one that needs clearing but you can try the other 2, no harm)
Google Service Framework
Gmail

It can only work with root, because it installs into the kindlefire/apps folder and you must move it manually into system/app folder. That can only do with root.

It can still work to a certain extent without root, to get the full capability & stability, then yes it needs root.
See - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895040

I just tried to clear the data from both. It says that it cleared, but when I go into gmail or and other Google app, the account is still listed as available to sign in to and gmail is still showing the account I signed in to and receiving mail. I uninstalled and reinstalled gmail but it still showed up without having to be configured.

Is Gmail better than the stock email app?

In some ways it is definitely a lot better, but it's also good if you want more of a regular Android experience. (Or you just have a Gmail account you want to access easily.)

Problems with Netflix

Hello all. I've been using the netflix app for quite some time now and haven't had a single problem... until now. The app loads, I can pick a title, see all of the episodes, and even select titles to play.
However, it stays on the loading screen, and the video won't play. I've tried clearing data, reinstalling the app and even different versions of the app.
I've even reinstalled my ROM, and wiped the caches. Still no video.
Every other app works perfectly, and netflix works fine on both of my other devices (Wii and Windows 8).
Is it just on my phone, or is this a bug in the android app?
Edit: I'm running Nottachtrix 1.3.1, with faux's kernel. I've tried the stock kernel as well.
Edit2: I tried Crackle and it doesn't work either. Perhaps I should do a full wipe?

I am having the same problem you describe with Netflix. Just says loading forever and does not play. I have been streaming Netflix on my rooted (bootloader is NOT unlocked) Gingerbread Atrix 4G successfully for several months. I was recently using version 2.0.1 without problem. I upgraded to the newest version on the Google Play store (2.2.1 I think) but still had the loading forever screen after selecting a video to play. I installed a very old Netflix version 1.7.0 and it appears to work. I might have learned something new from your post. I was under the impression if I unlocked the boot loader and installed another ROM the DRM Netflix keys would be gone FOREVER with no way to get them back. Also thought that with the DRM keys gone, I would not be able to use Netflix and possibly other streaming apps on my Atrix 4G. am I missing something????
The only thing that root kills is the ability to use the google movies app, which is expensive anyway. Everything else is supposed to work. I'll try the 1.7.0 version here in a bit, thanks for the tip!
Edit: It works!!! Thank you so much!

Glad 1.7.0 worked for you
I know rooting does not break Netflix (mine has been rooted for months). I was talking about unlocking the bootloader in my previous post. If anyone is using the newest Netflix version and it works on their factory Gingerbread ROM Atrix 4G/MB860, please post to this thread...
Thanks Much, Ron

Ok I was able to fix mine. I noticed mine died right after i uninstalled the antivirus and firewall from my phone.
So what I did was do a complete wipe of my phone.
I wiped the cache, and the data.
Reinstalled my rom of choice.
Reinstalled google play
Reinstalled netflix
now it works.
I am now running recovery on my preinstalled apps
Thanks for the info/ Further clarifications needed
Guess that confirms you CAN UNLOCK the bootloader and at least one of the steaming providers (Netflix) still works on the Atrix 4G. Can anyone verify which streaming providers do NOT work after unlocking the bootloader/installing none factory signed ROM images??? (if any) I had read several places on this and other forums that unlocking the bootloader would BREAK Netflix and possibly other things requiring the original hardward protected DRM keys. I had been holding out on unlocking the boot loader because of such nonsense and because I still want the Webtop 2.0 functionality to still work on my Lapdocks/HD Multimedia docks.
Have a Great Day
Regards, Ron

Must have app if you use the Google Play store

Android Market Helper
http://codekiem.com/2013/02/13/market-helper/
This app tricks the app store into thinking you have a different device, a Nexus 7 for instance.
This doesn't change your build prop and using it is dead simple. Run it, choose the device you wish to emulate from the drop down list.
click the link for google dashboard, which registers the device as the one you are emulating. Go to play store, download the app you want.
When you're done, reboot the tablet or go back to the mrket helper app and choose restore.
It works as advertised.
Very nice i will have to give it a try when i get my kindle back.. Sooo many apps available now!! Stoked!!
Nice find.
To bad you have to be rooted it said that in later versions it will work for unrooted devices so I will keep it and wait for the update great find man

Anyone else having issues with this, I noticed today Google pushed out version 3.10.14 of the Play Store now it's doesn't seem to work any more, tried clearing the data/cache from the Play Store & checking my Google Account & it shows the change in device but apps still remain incompatible from the app & the web versions.
Edit: Well, installing/pushing apps from the web version seems to be working now, but not from the actual device, better than nothing I guess.
Edit 2: That was short lived, not working again, says apps are compatible but grey's the device out even with Nexus 7 set as device.
Edit 3: Market Helper v1.1 released today! Now stuff works again

Speaking of the Kindle App...
So I rooted my wife's KFHD. I installed Nova Launcher, everything works like she wants except the actual "Kindle app that shows up in the app drawer after a home launcher is installed. When tapped to open it, it does nothing. The only way I can get around that is to tap the Kindle "Home" icon which takes you back to Amazon's hideous Launcher, then tap on "Books" to access available books and the Store. Does anyone know if it is possible to get the Kindle app to act normal? I thought I had solved this problem when I installed the Google version of the Kindle app over it and it worked, but I remembered it's not the best idea to do this and if I remember correctly, it only works until the next time the KFHD is rebooted. After the reboot the Kindle app in the Nova Launcher app drawer becomes useless..Any help would be appreciated.

I think it would be prudent to have a specific subject related to Spotify for this. I feel that many apps use DPI as the indicator for tablet mode (ex. Gmail) so I'm not sure what Spotify is doing but I am also curious. I will check on my TF201 and report in.

Confirmed, just tried this before searching the forums (and ending up here haha),
I bricked my phone a little today editing build.prop. had to reflash. Lol.
I jst tried to change ro.product.model and ro.product.id, didnt work.
I'm using Paranoid Android on my Nexus4. I tried to us PA's Hybrid Settings to set the per app DPI for the Spotify app too 600p, which will force many apps to switch into the tablet layout. However, I did not have any luck getting Spotify to change into tablet mode. I also enabled the Force and Large toggles, which is necessary to force tablet mode for some apps, but didn't have any success with that either.
My best guess then is that Spotify determines what kind of device you have from the android.permission.READ_PHONE_STATE, wich provides the device ID.
I have no clue about how these things work, but if the Spotify app is installed on a tablet, the read phone state permission, what happens with it?
LOL. goddaMNit, this thing is really annoying, and also, i have very nice playlists on Spotify so I don't mind the shuffeling But still, i'm kinda obsessing abot this thing.

If you want the real YouTube app and you have another android device like a phone or something just use esfile explorer add a drop box account and copy the YouTube apk out of your data/app folder, then install esfile explorer on your kindle add drop box go to were you saved the apk and install it, like cevyn says you can actually get pretty far without root
