first, thanks a lot!
then, what did you mean with "its a system app"?
[Edit]
Doesn't work.
If I tap on the apk, it warns me that it will replace the installed one, I choose "OK", than the installation starts but after a while fails with just a "application not installed", no other error message.

or you can uninstall the upgrade form the playstore app on my apps

The version you want is designed to work ONLY on the kindle fire itself; it won't operate on other devices.
I suggest "moon reader", it's actually better imo

Trust me, you're better off. Kindle is the "best known about" reading app, but it actually lacks a lot that others have to offer. Try checking out a few different ones, they've come a long way to compete

I have about 760 documents in my Kindle account, and I'm used to read ebook on different devices, and I like the kindle app on my iPad.
The android version is so bad... But I'm "bind" to my Kindle account, so...

Sorry i couldn't help you, since you are rooted, you can install custom recovery and download one of the official amazon roms from hashcode (pre rooted i think)

Why is it 'bad' to use the Google Play one?
Ok, it has less features and all, but apart from that its working just fine here.
Is there a way to get the 'stock' apk??
Thanks

You could do one out of three things
A.uninstall the google play update in settings(easiest )
B.reinstall the o.s.(okay)
C. Extract the apk out of a downloaded rom(harder)

Speaking of the Kindle App...
So I rooted my wife's KFHD. I installed Nova Launcher, everything works like she wants except the actual "Kindle app that shows up in the app drawer after a home launcher is installed. When tapped to open it, it does nothing. The only way I can get around that is to tap the Kindle "Home" icon which takes you back to Amazon's hideous Launcher, then tap on "Books" to access available books and the Store. Does anyone know if it is possible to get the Kindle app to act normal? I thought I had solved this problem when I installed the Google version of the Kindle app over it and it worked, but I remembered it's not the best idea to do this and if I remember correctly, it only works until the next time the KFHD is rebooted. After the reboot the Kindle app in the Nova Launcher app drawer becomes useless..Any help would be appreciated.

Hard to find Apps that work on the nook hd and hd+ [APK]

Well I am starting this Thread for users to add useful APPs that they have found to improve their Nook hd and hd plus tablets. Here is the download
amazon market, Adobe Flashplayer. Feel free to add your own that way we don't have to Google our hands off searching for every little APK to improve our tablet.:good:
Seriously you guys can add apps at anytime just by hitting reply I found those two, now if you guys have any other apps that you find useful feel free to add them so other people can find them useful as well.

I don't understand what you are getting at, I have sideloaded 25+ apps on my Nook HD and I havent had a problem yet?
Are you asking people to post working .apks? Cause thats a long, long list...
I just use Astro File manager (anything that backs up apps would work) on my phone, drag the .apks to my computer and sideload them via adb to my Nook HD... Takes a little longer than downloading .apks from some site, but this way they are directly from the play store.
Ok That's great that you have found a way to easily install apk files to your nook, yes, my intention was to get a long list of apps that work nook that way future users don't have to scour the internet searching for apps. I understand your point, I know some people don't see the logic in helping others, I get that. I am sorry you don't understand good natured intent.

I did not mean any discontent, I just thought it would be a long list of apps to post all working apps. Maybe we should post not working apps instead... We should assume that most apps will work.

Yeah most apps that I've tried worked except for a handful. Even though the market sometimes says device isn't compatable I download them from another source and the run fine most of the time. List would be neater with apps that don't work for it.

You may have a good point there, also if the latest version of an app doesn't work see if we can try older versions to see if those work sometimes older versions can be compatible while newer versions are not.

Nice idea, should save time, LOL, I just put flash on my HD, if I'd have seen this thread earlier it would have been easier and quicker.
adventures of tintin doesn't wrk on nook hd+
I side loaded it' it opens up and then says device isn't compatible. Any suggestions?
What do you mean by "side loading" because side loading means using ADB to push install apk files. You have to have your nook rooted, and have flashed the zip that gives you the ability to install from unknown sources. If you are trying to flash it, through CWM, that won't work on this tablet. All you have to do is install it as you would any other apk file that you have downloaded no need to "side load"

Hi, I have never used comixology but from what i understand it tries to do specialized zooming from panel to panel as you said, I am not sure if it is preset by the authors or if it tries to use a algorithm to decide it, anyway non of that really matters, no manga watcher just show full pages on screen and you can choose zoom width, zoom height, of zoom page. it also has the option for dual pane in landscape. I will say it is one of the smoothest comic readers i have used almost as good as komik. Again thoughit doesn't do any speical zooming from panel to panel and i honestly think that might be choreographed by a person on comixology.

Working Gmail - KFHD 7"

As some will have noticed the latest version of Gmail 4.2.1 & 4.1.2 doesn't exactly play nice with the Kindle Fire HD, if you have notifications on & you get a e-mail the whole top bar will disappear for a short while, so to prevent that from happening you have to turn off notifications on Gmail which isn't very productive.
Anyway I tried the version before those and found 4.0.5 works perfectly fine, notifications & all, sure you don't have some of the fancy new features of the latest build but it does work very well as a e-mail app, currently using it now no issues.
You can get it from here - http://www.androiddrawer.com/1412/download-gmail-4-0-5-app-apk/

What KFHD software version are you on?
Everytime I've tested it (4.2.1) the same thing happens with the notifications, it's a strange issue.
I'm on the latest 7.2.3 (Rooted).
Appellant work for me. I installed this on my Kindle, and it launches, then closes immediately. I don't have it rooted so is that part of the problem?
Sent from my Kindle Fire HD using Tapatalk
You'll need GoogleLoginService & GoogleServicesFramework for it to function properly, can be a bit buggy without root especially when trying to get syncing to work but I've used Gmail OK before rooting.
I'm guessing that I would need to root the Kindle to install those. (I'm really new with this, so sorry if this is a stupid question.)

No, Gmail & the other two GoogleLoginService & GoogleServicesFramework can be installed without root & work to a certain degree, it's only the syncing that can be problematic as for it to work flawlessly it needs the AccountAndSyncSettings.apk to be in system/app folder which does require root but if you just wanna check your e-mail occasionally you can install the 3 apks in bold listed above.
You can get a working Gmail APK from here - http://www.androiddrawer.com/1412/download-gmail-4-0-5-app-apk/
Get the other two APKs from here (Link at the bottom of 1st post) & install those first - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069329

As I was doing this though, I got messages popping up that were saying (insert app name here) has stopped. Gmail started to launch, but then it quit with a Gamit has stopped. Any ideas? It's a while since I had them installed whilst unrooted but they did work, I had other Google apps as well such as YouTube & Drive, Gmail isn't the most stable unrooted, like I said it has trouble with sync, anyway try installing the just the 2 Services APKs, reboot then install Gmail & see what happens then if you want.
The same thing happened like before I installed the 2 Google framework packages. Doesn't even launch.

If you uninstall/delete the 2 service APKs, none of the Google apps will function.
To remove Google accounts, clear the data for Gmail & the 2 service APKs in Kindle settings.
Kindle Settings > Applications > Installed Applications:
Google Account Manager (Think this is the only one that needs clearing but you can try the other 2, no harm)
Google Service Framework
Gmail
It can only work with root, because it installs into the kindlefire/apps folder and you must move it manually into system/app folder. That can only do with root.

It can still work to a certain extent without root, to get the full capability & stability, then yes it needs root.
See - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895040
I just tried to clear the data from both. It says that it cleared, but when I go into gmail or and other Google app, the account is still listed as available to sign in to and gmail is still showing the account I signed in to and receiving mail. I uninstalled and reinstalled gmail but it still showed up without having to be configured.

In some ways it is definitely a lot better, but it's also good if you want more of a regular Android experience. (Or you just have a Gmail account you want to access easily.)

Hi, I'm not the OP but thanks for trying to help. Unfortunately it's not The Weather Channel he/she was asking for but The Weather Network which is based in Canada. Unfortunately they've opted to restrict the tablet version to 8'' and up devices excluding the N7 (despite more than a few complaints on the Play Store).
If by chance you'd be willing to upload TWN, I'd definitely appreciate it. I know the iOS version is available in the US iTunes store so I'm guessing you'd have access?

I am sad to say that the app force closes on Nexus 7. I don't understand why they can't make this compateable on a 7 inch screen. The Weather Network treats the N7 like a phone.... I think I would look pretty stupid holding that thing to my ear.
I went back to an iPad Mini (Retina). As much as I love Android on phones, it's still not the same/better experience on tablets.

I was able to get it to work using "exposed framework" and "app setting" to set the display as higher resolution. It tricks the tablet version into thinking your tablet is a tablet (lol) but the problem is it still didn't look right. There was many glitches. I think the weather network was designed for 10 tablets :'(
I gave up. Pitty. 1weather is a good app to try.

wow thanks for the tip, i will try "xposed app setting" as i already have this installed but never thought of using it for TWN. My guess is that i will encounter the same problems as you did so ill probably end up giving up on TWN as well. I installed the new app of Weather Channel and Accuweather this morning. I am still testing both, they both look like very good weather apps. I have used 1weather before but uninstalled it cant remember why. Its a shame that TWN doesnt support all tablets.... i hope android become more strict with uploaded apps to the playstore, seems like the tablet world isnt supported by android devs all that much, at least not like apple, its so hard to find good tablet apps on playstore =(

Could you give me some help? I have a Galaxy Tab3 8.0, which is very similar to the note 8. But I could not get the TWN to launch in tablet mode, using xposed app setting. I followed your instructions - put 162 dpi and checked xlarge res everything else is untouched. It just made everything smaller but still in phone mode.
Perhaps TWN updated their app so the hack doesn't work anymore.
Did you modify anything else, like the tablet's overall DPI setting in build.prop?
Did you download the app from Play store, or side loaded it from another source?

Pity that the newer TWN versions break the hack. Things just never seemed to work out of the box like my iPad mini. Another example of Android users being treated as 2nd class compared to the iOS camp.

Hi guys. My HDX 7 is still running 13.3.2.1, should I update or stay at current firmware hoping for some root method? I just want YouTube, Google Play and a normal launcher. I don't really care about Amazon services.
Thanks in advance!

It is possible to make the HDX more "Android-like" without rooting it. Because root seems distant I've spent some time working on and have shared on my blog how to pull it off:
Make Your Amazon Kindle Fire HDX More Android-Like without Root

Also, an app called SuperTube works pretty well for watching YouTube on HDX.

If you want the real YouTube app and you have another android device like a phone or something just use esfile explorer add a drop box account and copy the YouTube apk out of your data/app folder, then install esfile explorer on your kindle add drop box go to were you saved the apk and install it, like cevyn says you can actually get pretty far without root

Who's getting one and which version?

Hey all
Amazons latest is available in two screen sizes, a 6" 800 x 1280 pixels (~252 ppi pixel density) and 7" 800 x 1280 pixels (~216 ppi pixel density) Full specifications can be found here. Anybody going to grab one of these, and which version?
With a release price of $99 and $139 its certainly a bargin:good:
The kindle fire 6 sounds great. It could be a awesome MP3 player. Imagine if CM11 gets imported into or at the least root access.

good luck with that
Oh I know it was more of a wishful thinking. It's my first ever tablet so stock will do everything I need it to for now. Someday hopefully I can rip off the fire is and put something with the play store on it.

Anxious to see how this works out myself. Would rather get two of these 6 inch models than the tab 4 for my kids. But without play store and a decent launcher it isn't happening.

Does nova or go launcher work.

Yes you can sideload apps
Other launchers will run but the fire does not let you set a launcher as default plus you can not set a wallpaper
I am very anti piracy when it comes to Android apps, but Aptoid runs well on here and has tons of apps and can be easier than taking the time to sideload. But it also has paid apps you can pirate so you just have got to avoid those.

Thanks, I've used aptoid before, I suppose it would be okay. The launchers is the hard to swallow part. I'll sit back and watch to see what comes of these nifty 6 inch devices. I used a kfhd with stock but play store and nova for a few years. If we manage that it would be great.

I'm still deciding so it would help to know . . . If you sideload Twisted Home can't you set a default launcher with that? Also, on my 3rd gen. wallpaper sticks with some launchers but not others. Are you sure no launcher can use wallpaper? Thanks for info!

It's not that we can't set a default launcher, it's that it doesn't stick. I tried Themer and it worked fine with setting wallpaper.
I have never had a tablet before so I bought a 6 for my mom and a 7 for my girl friend. I got them on Black Friday for 79 and 109 dollars. I made the choice based on looking up dev work for the KINDLE Fire HD6 and HD7. Then I got the devices in the mail, opened each expecting to root them, go to settings and see that nothing matches and that this is a Fire HD6, without the Kindle name.
So, I am glad I didn't buy one for myself! I am assuming that Amazon is paying Google for the source code of aosp if they are taking out the Play Store and Google Search? That is how Google makes their money on aosp
Just bought fire HD 7 4th generation from amazon for $79. Just want to update this post so people with their device can come here to talk .....

You can actually set another default launcher and the setting will stick. Requires ADB access.
