[Q] TWRP troubles with sprint OTA 3.16.651.3 - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hello all,
I am brand new to the android community, and have come accross a problem that I can't seem to get fixed. I previously rooted/rom'd my EVO lte with mean rom a while back. I started to have wireless issues so I decided to spend some time learning/fixing the problems that I'm sure my noobness created.
I relocked my phone and unrooted it back to factory 2.13.651.1. After doing that I updated my phone via Sprints OTA updater. I recieved an update that took me to 3.16.561.3. After that was completed I preceeded to unlock my bootloader again and installed TWRP 2.4.1.0. When I try to install any ROM it appears to go well in TWRP, but it reboots right after it says "updating kernel, this may take a while". When it reboots it sits at the HTC white startup screen, it doesnt even flash the red developer letters under the HTC logo like it normally does when continuing to boot into recovery or the old ROM.
I did some search and have found that others had issues with TWRP 2.4.1.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2048229&page=573). They rolled back to 2.4.0.0. The problem is that with the OTA update the touch sence in TWRP is broken unless you run 2.4.1.0.
Anyone else run across ths issue?
The solution is probably staring me in the face but my noob aura is blocking it. :silly:

TWRP 2.4.1.0 broke something with flashing so you might have to relock and ruu to get back to normal. The problem is there is no ruu out for 3.16 and running the ruu for 3.15 may mess up your phone. I would try to flash the kernel separately by flashing with fastboot or flashgui and see if that allows it to boot into the rom. You may be able to run dirty racun and gain s-off since the hboot didn't change with the latest update.

So u was on 3.16 and unlocked it? Did u use dirty racun? Did it work? Sorry I accepted ota and want s-off rooted if possible.

I didnt use dirty racun to unlock, I used the fastboot method. I'm not developed enough in my knowledge to be s-off atm.

On your notes I did some searching to learn what you were saying. First I tried to use the fastboot update 'meanbean-rom.zip' file but it produced errors:
archive does not contain 'android-info.txt
archive does not contain 'android-product.txt
error: update package has no android-info.txt or android-product.txt
I tried fastboot flash boot boot.img after extracting the boot.img from the .zip. After rebooting the phone stays on the white HTC logo screen but now populates the red dev notice. Looks like I'm going in the right direction
Thanks for your help so far.

I believe I have it figured out. I searched for an unofficial version of CWM recovery (all the XDA links for the evo lte have been removed for now due to bugs). I'll deal with those bugs as I was stuck without a phone until I got it figured out
Installed CWM 5.8.3.5 and flashed Meanbean Rom. Problem fixed
I'll put TWRP back on when they release a patch.
*Edit* spoke too soon. The touch interface doesnt work with meanbean due to the driver update (I'm guessing). Atlease I can see any missed calls now. lol
*Edit* Thanks to the D3rps I was able to get my phone up and going again. They had posted the stock 3.16 rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2127947, with *Removed* recovery I was able to flash that rom. Now I just have to keep an eye out for the Meanbean update that will make it work with 3.16 touch.
**Edit** I removed the reference to the recovery I was using due to problems my noob self was not aware of. Thanks to Bigdaddy619 for his guidance, I now realize why no one is using it on the evo lte.

HTC EVO 3D Rogers OTA Update On Rooted Phone?

Hello everybody
The new ICS update for the ROGERS EVO 3D just came out yesterday, so I restored my phone to the original firmware (via restoring the backup I did in the recovery) and then proceeded to download the OTA update. After it finished, the phone rebooted into the recovery (i have 4-ext touch recovery) and started installing. After it finished, the phone rebooted and then got stuck on the white HTC screen. I managed to enter the recovery again and restore the original firmware again. What is that I'm doing wrong here? Here is some helpful info:
Rogers EVO 3D, GSM version
Unlocked bootloader (HTCDEV method), S-ON
carrier unlocked
HBOOT 1.49.0008
OS is rooted
I'm in the same boat but I'm not able to do a recovery. I went through the update process and when the phone rebooted it got stuck on the white htc screen. I can get it into the bootloader menu but when i choose recovery it starts but then i get an error with a pic of the device and the red yield sign. If i choose factory reset it just gets stuck at the white htc. I read some other posts and I saw that having an unlocked bootloader may cause issues with updates so that may be your issue as for me, I'm not sure what I can do. I may just need the actual update file to redo the update but I'm not sure where to find it.
Same here, but I don't get half way through the ota update before I see the red triangle and exclamation mark. Phone will boot into stock recovery (which I would assume you need instead of modded recovery) and the update starts, but doesn't complete. I pull the battery and the phone boots up normally. Just can't seem to get through the update. Could be something to do with being s-off I would guess.

Same problem but whit s-off
I have been predicting that this would happen... ICS failures with non-standard HBOOTs. Good luck.
Probably will have to wait for an RUU or custom.
I'd recommend using the GB ruu to get you back to full stock. Always found Rogers ota updates (possibly all carriers?) won't install if you're rooted or using a custom recovery.
I had to install the ruu via renaming the rom.zip to PG86IMG.zip and copying it to the sd card so that the bootloader would auto flash it. Running the ruu exe tossed up all kinds of errors.
It will put everything back to Rogers stock. After that just setup wifi and do the 2 Rogers OTA updates.
Once in ICS, it's easy peasy to get recovery and root back.
Also, for what it's worth, Go Backup is awesome for going rom to rom and not needing a full backup. Use it on rooted rom, then use it to restore after rooting new rom. Will do all your apk's and everything.
1st post here after years of lurking. Yay.

Alright thanks a lot
Just an update on what I did. I was able to reload the stock gb rom for rogers using the exe file, then I went through the 2 updates that came up when checking and ics is now up and running on my phone. However in my attempts of trying to fix the original problem, I managed to re-lock my bootloader before flashing to stock rom and I had s-on the whole time. hope this help.
i switched to stock like.. a week back?
jus got ota on 4th
i WAS rooted and using juopunutbear's hboot *u can jus get the hboot from their website*
so i jus flashed back stock recovery.. and updated.. and success.. lost root though.. and i was back to stock bootloader..
used the PG86IMG with juopunutbear's bootloader and 4ext recovery.. and flashed cwm supersu.. v0.91 i think.. i dunno.. latest one.. and bam.. im on stock.. rooted.. and works perfectly..
Possible sollution
Maybe try flashing one of the customized ROMs that are based on the latest OTA update. I'm sure Anryl's newest rom is blazing-fast and stable. You can find it in the gsm android development forum and flash it via recovery. Make sure you have the latest 4ext recovery installed, though.
where can a i find that stock rogers rom i modified mine and that might be the reason i get a security failure in hboot. s is on. when i run the ruu file in windows to downgrade i get error 155. when i run the the update from about phone. it locks up with blue android guy and yellow exclamation mark. i remove the battery and she boots fine with no changes.
I am trying to do same. Get stuck on HTC screen. I have S-ON. Was on cobra 2.4 prior.
If anyone can give details on how to fix it, it would be great! Please no saying "install exe". I need to know which exe etc.
just wanted to tell everyone that in order for the ota update to work properly, you need to be running stock unrooted firmware with a locked bootloader. Just relock your bootloader, reinstall the stock firmware, upgrade to ics via ota, then re-unlock and re-root.
Hi
I have a HTC EVO 3D from Rogers that was got messed up during changing networks... rooted the phone for no apparent reason... to now get a update for it for ics from the provider and it bricked the phone.
It's stuck at HTC boot screen, can get fastboot USB from bootloader. recovery gets a ! in a triangle and factory reset doesn't work, freezes at splash screen after restarting the phone. Was stupid not making a backup or searching for programs to back it up before I went ahead and clicked update
It has HTC boot-loader 1.49 s-on but is rooted.
I am looking for clear(fix my evo for dummies) step by step instructions with correct installation for my model of phone, HTC EVO 3D Rogers GSM, or anything that could replace the os to get my phone to be useful again I'm currently using my backup phone a HTC G1 HTC ftw
Try kingcobra's rom, ota from rogers will not boot due to the fact that your phone is rooted, kingcobra's rom is based on rogers ota, flash it and leave it.

Go to the gsm development forum and download the RUU for the phone, and restore it to stock unrooted OS. Before you do that though, make sure that your phone's BOOTLOADER IS LOCKED. Look up how to re-lock your bootloader. After you relock your bootloader, you can proceed with restoring the phone.
Soooo.... basically, what I'm getting from this is, if you like having a locked bootloader, CWM and root, don't bother trying to install this OTA update because it's a headache. Agree?
The phone's not mine, it's my wife's, and she doesn't want anything special or like the idea of me messing around in her phone.
I was about to install this late last night, just about to hit that button, then I thought, "what about the bootloader? what about root? what about the fact that it's now unlocked and being used on a carrier other than Rogers?"

You probably took the update and tried to install it with a custom recovery installed. If so, it appears that will result in a partially installed update with the ROM updated and the kernel not being flashed, which causes WiFi errors.
If that's your situation the best thing to do is flash a stock rooted ROM if that is what you were using prior to taking the OTA.

I found this thread because I'm in a similar situation. I tried downloading from the quoted link and using 4eXT recovery to load the zip file from sd card and it says "installation aborted".
Any ideas on what to try next? My eventual goal is to get back to 100% showroom stock non-rooted, locked booloader, so that the phone will accept OTA updates fully. Modding/ROMing is a drug I experimented with, and am now ready to go back to the straight and narrow. I'd prefer the phone not have any scars whatsoever from my old habits.
Additional background:
Started with ICS OTA. Used HTC unlock to unlock bootloader. Coworker installed rom toolbox, superSU and 4eXT recovery (not sure what order) to get SOS rom up and running. Never did go for S-OFF.
Decided I wanted to return to 100% Sprint factory stock. Coworker promptly moved across country, leaving me to figure this out. Tried using several ROMs from XDA and elsewhere, and eventually ended up with a rooted almost stock ROM, but had to flash my own radios via 4eXT, as wifi and 4G weren't working from the rom. Flashing my own radios via 4eXT, got to 2.89 with then current radios.
While sitting in my hotel travelling abroad with no international data plan and super slow hotel wifi, I foolishly downloaded OTA this morning, promptly killing my phone's wifi. Phone is still rooted with 4eXT, superSU, installed on it if that helps.

How about S-Off phones?
Hello... so my fiance' has a Virgin Mobile Evo 3D. I downloaded the update from them and tried to install it through the custom recovery. It did what Ramjet said by updating the ROM and not the Kernel. I now have no wifi,it says wifi error when trying to turn it on. Since then, I have made sure the stock ROM was rooted, and have also HTCDev unlocked the device as well as S-Off with the Junobear wire trick and Linux. Now that I'm S-Off, is it ok to use an RUU to downgrade everything? Just wondering before I go any further and brick the device or screw up something I shouldn't. I figure it's better to ask questions first before doing it lol! Any help is greatly appreciated from anybody! I have my specs listed here for you all:

Was this new thread ever made because I am a Virgin Mobile user too just like the above user and ever since last update my wireless has stated error.
If ur phone's bootloader is unlocked, relock your phone by using the fastboot command "fastboot oem lock". Then just download the 2.89 RUU.exe. (i know ur on 2.95 but i have not seen the 2.95 ruu floating around hgere yet) Run it on a windows PC and follow the prompts and it should flash correctly on your phone (caution, it will erase everything on your phone). Once its flashed, the phone will reboot (sometimes more than once) just let it do its thing
Once the phone has flashed correctly, do a software update and it will update to 2.95
Worked for me when i had to go back to stock in order to return it for warranty when the digitizer went out
EDIT:
Here is the link to the 2.95 OTA http://d-h.st/vUe
Download to your PC, then unzip it, and run it after you have relocked your phone
Should you need them, here is the list of HBOOTS (thanks to ramjet73) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29844945#post29844945

This sounds hopeful, I did try to install this before with no luck, it gave me a 131 custom id error. I did it relocked and I am currently 2.95.652.5, and S-ON.
any suggestions?
Thanks

[Q] Tried to manually install latest update, now phone won't boot.

Ok, so long story short, I got fed up with the latest update (4.05.605.14) downloading onto my phone and then failing every time it tried to install itself. Deferring didn't work and it would do it about 5 times a day. So I decided to try and manually install it. That was a mistake, as I think I used a method that was for S-Off instead. I ended up with a phone that wouldn't boot past the 4G LTE screen. I have searched the forums all day and tried everything I could, including trying to install the 3.14.605.12 RUU to take me back to stock. Even locked I can't get it to flash. It checks the PH98IMG.zip but when it installs it fails and says that the "Main Version is older!" So at this point I'm lost. If any of you have any ideas and can help me get my phone back it would be so great.
Thanks in advance.

You might just need to flash the proper kernel. Pull the boot.img from the ROM based on the OTA (linked below) and flash it and see if that does it. s-off phones don't need to flash kernel separately.
fastboot flash boot boot.img

Here on xda is Hassoon's Rezound All-In-One kit #3.2.

Is that going to work for an RUU? The RUU will want to actually change the hboot version to an older one.
I think I saw an RUU feature in Hassoon's Rezound Toolkit as well.
You can always flash just a radio or hboot later if you want.
It does have a Mainver Error Fix listed so it would be worth a try. Also downloading the kernel to try and flash that. Thank you both for the suggestions. Hopefully they keep coming in because I've tried about everything I've seen in the forums to date...
well neither of those worked. The all in one couldn't even find the phone. Guess I severely borked it... :crying:
borkness
Gonna be a lot of work, but you may have to re-educate your phone with
RUU 3.14.xxxx.xx.
After that, install AmonRa recovery. Then mebbe a custom rom or your old nandroid backup.
That's all assuming you can get into fastboot-usb.
I have no problem getting into fastboot usb. It's about the only thing I don't have a problem with. How does one reducate a phone?
There's no RUU that you can run since you have a newer hboot than all of them.
Try flashing the ROM linked in my post #2 above. It's stock based on the OTA. That worked for someone else who was having issues with other methods. Flash the boot.img after you flash the ROM.
Yep

[Q] Can't flash any ROMs

SOLVED!! Thanks to everyone, especially bigdaddy and FinZ! I will post something about what I did and what I used to get S-Off since it is actually really easy once put into easy to understands terms
Hey everyone,
Everything was going really as I was rooting my Evo 4G LTE this afternoon, until I realized I forgot to S-off. TWRP was installed and Superuser was flashed - Anyways, I got antsy and wiped the phone and flashed CM 10.1 and realized I forgot S-off - so of course, the phone wouldn't boot past the HTC screen.
I've been trying to flash stock roms to get into the superuser app, but none of them will load. They start to flash in TWRP, then the phone reboots to the HTC splash screen.
I am now unlocked, but still S-on. I can't flash any roms right now and was hoping someone might be able to help me out. I even tried the process all over again, but I get the same problem. So as of now, I can't get an OS on the phone.
Any ideas? Thanks.
Edit: I was running the latest OTA with HBOOT 2.09.

Flash meanbean or viper rom, both have s-on kernel installer and you should be able to get s-off using dirty racun or moonshine... Sharkie rom is a stock rom too with a s-on installer... Good Luck!

Any ideas? Thanks.
Edit: I was running the latest OTA with HBOOT 2.09.

Question... How did you install your recovery? Goo manager, pj75img.zip, or fastboot? I have had this same problem and the only solution was to fastboot flash a recovery... Dunno it was very weird and has only happened on my lte but it's been months.

I installed it using fastboot. I'm going to try one of the ROMs suggested above and see if that works. I'll let you all know as soon as I do it.
I keep reading that Moonshine won't work with HBOOT 2.09 - and I haven't had any luck getting it to work; it still gives me connection issues saying it can't connect to the phone. It's weird... I can use the adb devices command in recovery mode and my device ID shows up, but when I go into fastboot USB and do adb devices, I can't get it to show up. If I could somehow get that to show up during fastboot, it would mean smooth sailing.
Update: I successfully installed Meanbean. However, I still cannot gain S-Off. Moonshine won't work and I do not know enough to use DirtyRacun since it must be used with Ubuntu. I'll post my Moonshine issues in that thread
Thanks for the help with this! It looks like it just needed a S-On ROM to be installed which I though I was doing before!
I've tried every single HTC driver available and I can't get anything to recognize the Evo when it's in fastboot. It only recognizes the device when the ROM is loaded and USB storage is enabled. Unfortunately, I can't get s-off (as far as I know) without being in the bootloader and using fastboot.
Anyone know how I can achieve this or how I can get everything to communicate with one another like they're supposed to?
Have you deleted all the HTC stuff on your PC rebooted it the plug you phone back in and it should load the drivers again
then boot into bootloader and it should load more drivers
also try updating your android-sdk
Make sure you have the most current HTC driver. At least one person that I know of had issues until he updated to the most recent driver, which can be found in the link below. Use the HTC driver from post #2.

Also, like Bigdaddy said, make sure you have things like HTC Sync removed. Make sure you're using a USB 2.0 port, too. I don't know where you read Moonshine doesn't work with Hboot 2.09, because it does (specifically for the latest OTA).

[Q] S-off went wrong...HELP! Solved

So while in process of s-off once I got to the part when you "fastboot oem rebootRUU" that went through. But right after trying to flash a zip im stuck looking at the blk HTC screen. I was given a "<Failed <remote: 99 unknown fail>". Now its just stuck.
I've been trying to figure out what happened but just have no where else to turn. Please lend a hand.
I think I already know the answer to this question, but what version is your firmware? Just for your knowledge, there hasn't been an RUU since ICS, or maybe the first release of JB. So, odds are, you flashed the wrong RUU.
But good news, you *might* not be bricked. Have you tried rebooting? This really your only option, anyway. Try to get into the bootloader. Flash a new recovery if the RUU has already wiped it, and flash a compatible rom.
Please also list your bootloader info.

It's not a full RUU in the normal sense. It's the one for Facepalm.
To the OP, did you gain SuperCID prior to running those commands? If not, then the process will fail. You should simply be able to hold the power button down & reboot your phone. Also, as stated above, list your device info so we can make sure you're using the right S-off exploit.

So I did get the phone into the bootloader. I was trying to do the rumrunner s-off but being I was so damn tired lastnight I ended up forgetting a step. I am currently unlocked and rooted. I also somehow deleted my backup like a idiot and wiped the os. So I'm stuck from this point where I need to go.
So where we stand as of now:
bootloader unlocked
rooted
twrp 2.6.3.0
firmware 3.17.651.4
hboot 2.09
radio 1.13.11.0830

Happens to all of us. Don't worry about wiping the OS. Look for Captain Throwback's stock rooted rom, and flash a custom kernel along with it, like the Dirty MAC kernel or Arc reactor. Doesn't matter which one...rumrunner just needs a custom kernel.

After you flash these, then reboot into Android, set your phone to stay awake during charge Settings-->Display and Buttons, and also set SuperSU to automatically grant root access (open the app, swipe right twice, and scroll down a little). This way, you don't have to touch your phone. If you touch it, the process will fail....even to unlock the phone to grant root access. And of course, turn on USB debugging in Developer Options.
After you do all of these, then run the exploit.

This is odd to me, because I ran rumrunner at least 3 times using just my stock ROM (no custom kernel or anything), and it worked fine every time. I guess the new version of rumrunner added some limitations to make it more generic.
whats bothering me is that even after i check the MD5, it keeps failing to install capt zip. think maybe i can just use adb to push the zip file? just not sure how to word the command right to get it to load

No, don't. If it fails, don't force it. Reflash TWRP 2.6.3 (not the kit kat version), and try to flash again.
@Captain_Throwback: Yes, I didn't remember needing a custom kernel when I used Dirty Racun, but rumrunner needs it now. Keep in mind that rumrunner isn't for this device exclusively. Maybe that's the purpose of the custom kernel.
i'd wager you're trying to flash files that aren't recovery flashable, then lying to the people who are trying to help you.
i got it running again using capt stock rooted rom. attempting rumrunners s-off again now that i got this part working.
Are you using a custom kernel?

now s-off and updated rumrunners hboot. now onto flashing roms finally.
Thank you all that helped me with my stupidness and not reading directions.
Last post. I can't say it enough that you must read read read when it comes to directions. If I would of followed directions as directed I would of never ran into the issues I did. It was a learning experience.
One thing for sure that I took from this experience is adb and directions. I've learned a lot in the last 24hrs alone.
I'd like to thank Capain_throwback and everyone in the irc for the help and you all here that assisted me.
