[Q] Setting reminders with Google Now. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my Galaxy Note 2 replaced under insurance.
I am trying to get functionality back that I had before.
I used to be able to say something like:
"Remind me to call so-and-so tomorrow at 1pm".
And it would work flawlessly and alert me at that time.
Can someone please explain how I get this functionality back.
Does it have something to do with Samsung's calendar app? It works find for alarms, but it also used to utilize the calendar.
It's extremely frustrating because I used it all the time and now it won't work

nevermind... I just had to update Google Search. Works now.

[Q] how to replace "Corporate Sync" email with AOSP Exchange email

I'm on stock / rooted 4.5.91 for ATT Atrix. Prior to the GB update I was having daily issues with my exchange email, where I would get a "Connection Error" and only removing the account, rebooting, and re-adding the account would get it temporarily resolved. It would work for 1-2 days, then it would have the same issue happen again. Unchecking the "verify certificates" box seemed to help, but again only temporarily.
Now that I'm on GB I've only seen it once, but I'm still frustrated by it. My work email is important (if it was absolutely critical, I'd suck it up an get a BB), and I'm seriously annoyed by connection issues.
I'd like to try the AOSP email.apk and stock Android exchange sync setup, but not sure how to do that from where I am now. I assume it is harder than removing the existing email.apk and installing a new one.
I know the Aura ROM has the AOSP email built in, but not quite ready to go down the unlocked bootloader path. I'd like to keep my warranty in case the AOSP email doesn't work and I need to return the Atrix.
Anyone able to help?
Thanks.

I don't know the answer to your question, but are you sure it's not your corpo's fault? We run 4 exchange servers here and we have had no complaints about failed connections or anything of the sort, whether it's android, iPhone or otherwise. I have an Atrix and had it set up with my email since day one and I have had no issues at all.

Nope, not sure. But I do know numerous iOS and other Android users (mostly HTC phones, a few OG Droids) that don't have this issue.
I work at a small company so we have a hosted exchange service, and I had our IT guy remove and re-add the Activesync service for my account. That seemed to help for a day, but then back to the same problem.
I'd be willing to bet it is something that is incompatible between the Atrix and the exchange environment, but I've got limited access / visibility to that, and a variety of data points that do not have issues, so I'm trying this route.
Thanks for the input. If you have suggestions on things I can ask my provider to check / uncheck, I'm open.
Thus doesn't actually answer your question but I got tired of dealing with that from rom to rom so I just bought "enhanced email" from the market. Its $10 and gets around the pin requirement if you want to.
Sent from my Att Atrix 4g unlocked.
I had this start on my Captivate running Serendipity VII a few days ago and it is now completely shut down, no emails getting through. I use Enhanced Email as my email program. Very interested in discovering a solution.
on my BB, it took 30+ mins or even an hour to get emails. My exchange works perfectly on my Atrix, as it did on my Inspire. Its probably your phone
Agreed EE is awesome. We use it on 14 different phones in my office.
Last time I tried to get rid of Corporate Sync I kept getting FC's afterwards.
I recommend using the exchange app included in CM roms. It's based on AOSP but has some mods like email signature, and on your atrix the account will show up next to the google accounts in settings menu.
go download a CM zip from http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices/nexus-one and then extract system/app/email.apk to your phone and install it. then just add the account in settings.
I had issues with company exchange servers and went to Moxier Mail, they have a free 7 day trial then for $19.00 you get it all, contacts, calendar, email, tasks.....stays connected except when I changed my password (every 60 days). Then I had to remove and reload, but that was only issue....very reliable.....

Thanks, I'll try that.
Would I replace the email.apk with the CM one, or just install it in addition?

Appreciate the help. Got the file extracted then realized I had one more question - do I need to change the name, or is it ok to have 2 "email.apk" applications?
I realize it is a total noob question, but figure better to ask than to screw something up.
you can just install it. the blur version is titled BlurEmail.apk. if a conflict were to arise - it would ask you to overwrite. the system identifies apps differently so just renaming it wont change how it installs.
ex. Google+ shows up as "Google+" but the system seems and calls on com.google.android.apps.plus

New to rooting...

So I finally took the plunge and rooted; I installed CM7, as well as an updated kernel (I think it was from "imoysen", or something like that?), though I'm still kinda shaky on these concepts. So I have a few questions.
First of all, on CM7, it appears that I don't have a voicemail app anymore. Previously, after installing CM7, I was missing the Android Market app (as well as other Google apps), and someone instructed me to flash GAPPS, which got these back for me. Am I going to have to do the same for voicemail?
Secondly, back when I was on stock, I like using Fancy Widgets and/ or Beautiful Widgets to get Sense-lock clocks (but with more themes). I'm noticing now, on CM7, though, that none of them are able to pick up my location for weather. Why is that, and how do I fix it?
Lastly, and this is one that I'm VERY curious about, now that I'm rooted, is there any way to make headphones with controls originally made for iPhones (the ones with volume +/-, and a middle button) work with the Thunderbolt? I know they don't work on stock because it's an Apple proprietary thing, or whatever, but is there a way to get them working on a rooted device?
Thanks much to anyone that can answer any of my questions.

No idea on Voicemail; I've only used Sense-based ROMs. I would assume that there are multiple voicemail apps available (but you could just use Google Voice, and avoid ever having to listen to voicemails! text message transcriptions of voicemails are much better)
Weather Location: In Settings -> Location, make sure you have location services enabled. Also make sure you have syncing enabled in Accounts&Sync.
As for the headphones, check out https://market.android.com/details?id=com.kober.headsetbutton&hl=en
You'll notice, however, in the description:
Headset Button Controller cannot support the separate volume control buttons on the iPhone headset - this is a limitation of the Android framework.

So you'll only get 1 button worth of control.
Hm. Well, in CM7, I don't see any kind of setting for "Location", nor is there anything for it in Accounts & Sync. I know when I was first trying to get it to work, I stumbled upon some settings for location, but even when I had everything enabled, it still wasn't picking up my location.
Bummer about the headphones... I have a really nice set that I like a lot, I just wish the three buttons worked with Android.
Flash this in your recovery. This is the latest network location apk. Should fix you location.

Cool, thanks, that did the trick!

[Q] Google Now and Appointments

Hello all. I could really use some help organizing my life and Google Now isn't helping like I thought it would.
First of all, I'm running the latest AOKP by Task with the stock CM kernel (latest update). Jellybean is great and all but I always thought Google now would allow me to set appointments and the like with voice, but it's not working. Google Now is completely configured on my phone like it should, I have followed several guides just in case, and none of the cards ever show up. Furthermore, I am unable to set appointments to my google calendar which is synced. It'd be really nice to be able to use Google Now, especially the appointments. Can anybody help me figure out why it won't work? Thanks everyone

[Q] Google Now Reminder Alarms Not Working- It's Driving Me Nuts!!!

I hope someone can suggest some ideas. I've been trying for months to get the alarm notifications to work on my Verizon S3. I've spent hours and hours for month after month looking at the forums, and have not been able to fix it- I really, really would like to get this to work!
The problem is, I never get alarm reminders for either:
- time to leave/traffic alerts when I have upcoming appointments
- reminders based on location
I've tried everything I know of in the book- I need an expert to please help me get this working!!! Either I'm doing something really stupid and missing something, I have some setting(s) wrong, or Google Now is somehow broken for me. Sorry for the frustration...
I'm running a Verizon S3, with 4.2.1 and recently I rooted the phone (the notifications have not worked since before nor after the rooting- I did it for other reasons).
PLEASE HELP!!!
Please- any suggestions? I'm willing to start at the basics (in case I missed something) all the way to the complex. I really could use some advise on getting the alarms to work on Google Now notifications...
I've had the same thing happening for about 2 months now (from August 2013), and even with factory wipes and firmware flashes it hasn't come back to me. :/ It's worked once or twice but I haven't figured out if I had done anything before hand to get it back. Then afterwards it stopped working again.
Same for me yet. I've hard reset both my S3 and my Nexus 7, and not luck. Rarely do I get any notices, and if I happen to, it's not at the right time. Must be on Google's end on my account or something. Very, very disappointing, with little hope if it's not specific to the device...
Me too! Try this....

Also happening to me on my Note 3 t-mobile. I have flashed many roms. I even reverted back to stock, and did an OTA update to 4.4.2 and so forth.
The only thing that made a difference was if I sign in to Google Now using my backup Google account, then IT WORKS! So I think that Google is having problems on the back end. There is absolutely no difference between my Google accounts. Why would one work and one not work? I've been posting it all over the web and Google tech support. You should too!
Solution Found
I found a solution to the problem. After being a die-hard advocate for Android, I gave up about 6 months ago and bought an iPhone. It works wonderfully, and does everything it's supposed to, when and where it is supposed to. Reception and voice recognition are better than my S3 was too. I've given up a few things (customization, screen size, etc.), but I finally have a phone that just works. I can add apps, delete them, change settings, etc., and things don't get screwed up; and I don't have to hard reset and start over with my phone again. Plus, most of the Google apps are available on the iphone, including Google Now.
I may look at Android again when version 5.0 comes out; but even with that, if it's my account that's messed up, I doubt I will ever get it fixed...
I really liked Android, but I finally got soooo tired of having to spend so much time getting it to work...
Google now reminders not working possible solution
Okay so I purchased a phone LG G Flex unlocked from T-mobile and using on Metro PCS two weeks ago, prior to this phone I had a Note 3 and used Google Now to set remianders with no problems. When I activated my FLEX and started using google now it did not remind me, i could see the reminders on google cards but no notification and or finger with string in the notification bar to actually remind me. I was really bummed and fustrated as I depend on the reminder function alot. Not having any luck getting Google Now remainders to work I started searching for other apps simular to it, just something to remind me. But funny enough all the others application I found on the app store would do the same thing NO reminders, so I started thinking it may not actually be Google Now but something on my phone. I finally found an application called Robin that did work but gave me my reminders about 2 or three mins before or after the set time, nevertheless it was working but early or late notifications still bothered me. So i decided to turn off the automatic time zone/Network provider time and Automatic date and time/Network provided time and that did the trick for me. I started up Google Now and set like a hundred reminders to test it and they all came in on time. I dont know if the phone being unlocked and used on another network made the network time buggy but as long as I keep the automatic date and time off it works well. I dont know if this is the solution for everyone but it was for me. hope this help.
Fantastic and detailed reply- thanks!
I also switched phones, now I'm on a LG G3 (love the phone)! I seem to be getting almost all of my notifications now, but I'll try to pay a little more attention to it, and keep your suggestion in mind if I'm having any troubles. Thanks again for the information!

Can Google now show reminders while offline? I know I cant set or delete a reminder offline. But can it remind for an already set reminder offline?

Delayed notifications for almost 3 years. Unable to resolve to date. Help Needed!

For almost 3 years now, around the time I purchased my Nexus 6 in December of 2014, I've had delayed notifications. I always thought it was a Nexus 6 issue but it seems I was wrong.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Having recently purchased a Note 8, one thing I was really looking forward to was no longer having these delayed notifications. From the moment I set everything up, the issue was and is still present - even on a brand new, unmodified Note 8 purchased directly from my carrier (Telstra, Australia).
This has lead to me to look further into the issue and to finally get to the bottom of what might be causing it and hopefully, get it fixed.
From what I can tell, pretty much anything that uses Google's Cloud Messaging, which I beleive is everything from Gmail to Facebook, Google+ and many others, the notifications will be delayed. Sometimes only a few minutes, sometimes much longer.
Anything that doesn't rely on GCM works perfectly fine. For example, if I use Nine (an Exchange client app) and connect to an Exchange server, those notifications are always perfect. I'll get notified within seconds of receiving the email.
My partner, who has the exact same phone (Note 8) as well as Gmail and Facebook setup, receives notifications instantly (within seconds) and has never had the issue on previous Android devices either. So it's not a carrier issue, nor a WIFI issue, nor a phone issue. It is something directly related to my Google account.
Has anyone ever come across this issue that has been able to successfully resolve it? I've seen a couple of apps on the Play Store that apparently let you fix the issue but you need to be rooted in order for the apps to run. This is simply not an an option.
Given all testing points to something Google Account related, where would be the best place to start looking for a fix?
NOTE:
- I don't use any battery optimisation or task killer apps nor anything related. Never have.
I've come across the following information. It appears as though it may be something to do with this: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/nexus/fslYqYrULto/lU2D3Qe1mugJ
Although this looks promising, it doesn't really explain why it would affect some and not others. My partner who is using the same phone with the same carrier, connected to the same WIFI networks doesn't have the issue.

I've never had this issue before, but I've had friends that ran into issues similar to the one you've explained. I'll be sure to ask them what they did to resolve them, and get back to you when I know!

I haven't made much progress here however, I can confirm my carrier is actually taking the time to do some thorough research themselves and ensure there is actually nothing wrong in the background.
