After ICS update caller can't hear my voice - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, after the ICS update yesterday, when someone calls or I call out, the other person can't hear my voice. I can plug in ear buds, with built-in mic and the other person can hear my voice ok. Wondering if there's a conflict somehow with the speakerphone? Been over the sound settings several times and can't find anything that applies. Any ideas or fixes? Thanks much
Jim

Interesting. I've not run in to that yet. I am unable to use MHS with hidden ssid, I hate that quick look up is gone, and facebook was added. Just a few minor things but overall I like it.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I like what I'm seeing so far with ICS. This problem is very similar to one I had on an HTC Fuze several years ago, but it's been too long ago to recall the solution.

Are you able to hear calls on speaker?
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda app-developers app

Are you unrooted?

Its a stock Tbolt. I did try flipping the phone and the speaker didn't come on. There was a sound setting that was checked (flip phone for speaker).

If your microphone stopped working immediately after the OTA, I'd call Verizon and have someone look at it and replace it.
If your microphone worked for a little while after the OTA, chances are your microphone just decided to give out.
Either way, I'd look to get it replaced. If its stock and unrooted, there's absolutely no reason for the microphone giving out to be your fault unless it has possible water damage.
Try checking the headphone jack with a bright light for something stuck down in the headphone jack.

RBarnett, thanks for the reply. The phone was working properly (my voice out) worked fine before the OTA update. No water damage. Just too much of a coincidence for the phone microphone to stop working immediately after the OTA, to my way of thinking. Sounds like good advice to have Verizon check it out.

No mic on Thunderbolt after ICS and app installs
Exact same issue here.
I updated my stock, undamaged, 2 year old, Verizon HTC Thunderbolt to Ice Cream Sandwich(ICS) last Tuesday evening. That evening I found out my phone mic was not working. Callers could not hear me, but all else was fine. Speaker phone did work. Love the Bolt and ICS looks and feels great.
I went to the local Verizon store and the guy did some online research and found no known or reported issues. He said that it must be coincidental that the mic stopped working after the ICS update. He cleaned the mic area and the headphone jack, assuming crud may have been disabling the mic. Nothing seemed to fix the problem.
They ordered a replacement under warranty and it arrived the next day. I activated it and proceeded to reload all my apps, again assuming that the mic issue must be coincidental. After many hours tweaking the phone to my needs and setting up all apps I found that the mic did not work.
Thursday I took both to the Verizon store and another rep played with it and could not find the cause. Only options were to upgrade, or try another replacement. I had no reason to replace my previously fully functioning Bolt. They ordered a second refurb that arrived yesterday. Before downloading any apps I was only going to activate it and make sure the mic worked. I never got that far. The second refurb had a malfunctioning screen that was unacceptable to me.
So off to the store I went with three Bolts.
They agreed the 2nd one should never have been sent out with the poor screen.
This time I talked with a female rep. She actually just upgraded from a Thunderbolt and was well versed. We decided to wipe the first refurb back to factory and the mic now was working. I took it home, started downloading my apps and after a few hours and nearly done I found the phone mic to be inoperable again. The speaker mic worked fine.
Assuming an app was disabling my phone mic I wiped it back to factory and reactivated. I checked and the mic is now working again. I assume one of my apps is conflicting with the mic mute. I have been downloading a few apps at a time and the mic is still working. Only about 15% of the previously downloaded apps are now on my Bolt. I just don’t know what app, or when my mic may go mute.
Long, ongoing story, but I thought I would post to see if anyone has any ideas, or similar issues after ICS update. Thanks in advance.

Keep sending them back and complain enough and you might get a newer replacement.

By "new replacement" you mean a new Thunderbolt, or replacement by a different phone? Probably be a frickin Apple knowing my bad luck...lol
I was actually surprised they updated the Bolt considering you can't even get accessories at a Verizon store any longer. And supplies are limited online.

Hey, a big THANKS, for that detailed reply! I guess misery loves company! Yep, that is the problem. The only work around I've found is to use head phones or ear buds. But you can't just plug in buds or phones and expect them to work for phone calls. They have to have a built in mic. Mine is a Dynex Adapter. It has the mic and a button switch for switching to a call if you're listening to music or radio. The adapter is about 5" long and costs about $10 as I recall. At least that makes the phone usable again until a better solution comes along.
Like you, I thought I might have a rogue app and started removing any app with an audio or sound component. So far no luck. Please let me know if you come across a solution and I'll do the same. Thanks again for posting.

I have read elsewhere about a similar issue. In that post it mentioned that once you get the rogue mic mute the only fix is a factory wipe. I have had to wipe phones 5 times since ICS update last Tuesday. I tried uninstalling app by app but never got the mic back without a wipe. I need a phone, more than I need all the apps. I do miss some but am adding them back slowly.

Same here. They are sending me a replacement and we'll see what happens. I'm personally hoping this 2nd one has the same issue and just seeing if I can upgrade mine to another phone. >.>

Being a total dumb ass concerning programming phones, this problem appears to be software rather than hardware related. Could a developer create a small app to simply reset or clear the mic status? I'm probably oversimplifying, but it looks like an HTC or Verizon developer could fix this problem in a matter of minutes. Rendering a fine phone useless after an OS update seems kind of ridiculous, imo. Any suggestions or thoughts?

So far none of the rooted users that didnt take the ota but rather used the flash able haven't reported this issue. It is possible that its a combination of hardware and software where the new software didn't fill the gap for your hardware. It is well known that no two thunderbolts are alike and they all react differently to the software.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2

Good point Disconnectie. Something, whether hardware or software, rendered my perfectly working Tbolt, basically unusable after the OTA. I wonder now if the Emergency Call function is working? Don't think I'll make an emergency call to test.

Audio issue with the Eris... white noise/hissing

Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone has experienced this? When I use headphones I get the white noise/hissing. I've used three sets of head phones on the Eris and still get the white noise/hissing.
I've then gone on to use the headphones in three other devices (ipod, computer, blackberry) and no white noise/hissing. It's really annoying.
Is this something that I can have Verizon swap out for me?
Still nothing?
its a ghost
but actually it's probably an issue with the headphones compatibility with your Eris. I don't know.
Yeah, I thought that too. So I tried mono head phones, stereo, noise cancelling and any other kind I could get my hands on.

Though I'm hoping that I can go through three and they just send me an Incredible or Droid X.
My external speaker started sounding clangy last week. Got my replacement phone yesterday and it was clangy too. I'm sending it back, it had a 1.49 s-on hboot anyway. And we know how hard those are to root!
Anyway, the tech at vzw said my clangy speaker would be fixed in a "soon to be released" software update. We'll see.....
Good luck with the replacement phone.
Yeah, my external speaker is losing some sound quality too. It's very soft even though the volume is all the way up.
New phone is in Memphis, should be in Seattle by Tuesday.
Let me know if your new phone goes bad too.
My replacement was bad out of the box. It is a "certified like new replacement."
I'm sending it back and keeping my rooted Eris, bad speaker and all.
Also, another interesting thing is that, for me, the problem is worse when I'm plugged into external power (particularly a DC input from a car charger).
Now that is weird. I haven't tried not connected to the power chord.

Okay, tried with it unplugged and I still get that annoying noise. So I'm glad I got the replacement. haha

[Q] In-Call Voice Quality Better on Rooted EVO3D With Flashed ROMs?

I've already tried changing the codecs (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194947&highlight=voice+quality) and am just shy of taking a triangle file to the mic opening on my case.. (or exchanging the phone at Sprint)...
So.. My question is.. Has anyone who has had bad call quality with the stock ROM, then rooted their phones and flashed new ROMs have any issues with call quality with the new ROMs?
I'm avoiding taking my phone back as it is a magnificent piece of hardware, however my wife is ready to do it for me if I can't get the call quality improved.

I feel your pain! I took my 3VO back within the 30 days because of the "muffled mic" problem. My favorite tech gave me a brand new one, no questions asked. But, I still have my husband complaining, as well as some friends. I haven't tried changing the codecs, though. I did root my phone and install TWRP recovery. I haven't flashed a ROM, yet, though. So I can't tell you if a custom ROM will work. I am going to try the triangle file, though. Probably today. I had thought part of the problem was my case, which is the Best Buy Platinum. It's made by Seidio. But, taking it off makes no difference. So, I will try filing the back of my Evo. I will report back. I'm also going to choose and flash a ROM this weekend. I was just waiting for a chance to get a Class 10 16GB sdcard from my local Microcenter. I'm just hoping it's a REAL Class 10...
I guess you can try exchanging your 3VO. Just letting you know I had the same problem with the second one.
My husband says he has no problem hearing me from my 3d, but he always sounds muffled when we talk. I'm going to root his 3d this weekend and probably file the mic hole. I've done both of those things to mine already. Nobody complains about my voice quality -- before or after root -- but his is horrible.

Hmm.. Well, I guess it won't help to exchange it then.. Sucks because I use it for business as well and my clients that are located in Colorado had made a comment about it.
Maybe filing open the mic hole and/or flashing a ROM will do the trick (or any combination thereof)

Just wondering if you file the mic hole and if it helped? I changed the codecs, but that didn't do anything for me. I've tried taking off the back of my phone, but that doesn't seem to help the muffled mic issue for me. So, I figure if taking off the back won't help, filing the hole won't either. What settings did you use with Volume+? I tried it, but didn't hear any difference. I'm wondering if HTC used more than one brand of mic in our 3VOs? We know they used at least 2 different screens. Maybe one mic has higher gain and the kernel is set so that the mic in our phones is squelched? I asked my Sprint tech friend if HTC might address the problem with an update, but he said HTC would have to see it as a problem. Apparently not very many people have complained, at least not to Sprint. Sorry for the long, rambling post.
I tried some tests today. It makes no difference if I'm holding my phone, I'm still muffled. If I plug in my wired headset, my voice is much louder. If I used a voice recorder application, rather than make a call, my voice is louder too. Of course the voice recorder application might have the gain turned up in case you're trying to record something that is not right by the mic.

At first I was mad that you suggested this. But, I tried holding my phone vertically in front of my mouth, with the mic right in front of my mouth. Voila! The other person can actually hear me. Now to figure out how I can hold it so I can hear them, as well. Normally I hold my phone where the speaker is loudest for my ear and angle it towards my mouth, so the mic is near it. Too bad the modification to file out the hole on the back of the phone near the mic doesn't seem to help...

[Q] Echo/I hear myself when talking to a person. Defective Photon? or known issue?

Hi,
Just got my Photon, and it seem's when talking to someone i can hear myself talk. On speakerphone it's fine. I checked and the echo is on my end, the other person does not hear it. I went to another sprint store to test floor model and i also hear it. It's not horrible, but you can definitely tell that you hear yourself as your talking.
Does anyone else have this? I'm a little worried that this might be a known defect since i noticed this on another photon? Can anyone comment?

I've not had this issue or heard others complain, but I've had this happen on occasion with all past phones. I chalked it up to tower and signal strength and could never reproduce it intentionally. I'd sometimes have to ask the other person if I could call them back and it went away on the callback.
BTW - my fat finger hit thanks instead of quote, so you've got a head start on your thanks meter.
Usually (on any phone) when hearing yourself or echo; turn the volume down.
I've actually been hearing this too, but it's odd. Not a normal echo. Instead, it almost sounds like the phone is hollow and my voice is echoing back through the physical shell of the phone.

I saw that too in my google search, it didn't work. I even tried switching to Sprint Only under networks and still the same thing. I really hope this is just a defective phone, i cant imagine this skipped motorola's quality control.
This is intentional guys. It's not a defect or a hardware/software issue. It's designed to give you a richer sounding conversation. Other phones /manufacturers have been too cheap/lazy to do this, I'm glad moto did. There aren't any settings you can change to "fix" it because there isn't anything to fix. The swapping the phone won't do anything either.
The phone is working as it was designed to.

Richer sound? I call this a major quality control f*ckup. Nothing personal towards you, just my opinion. I should not hear any other noise then the intended one. I will be going back to my evo until they fix it.
In any event thanks to everyone for clarifying this.
It's an intentional design decision to fix the problem of people rudely (and unnecessarily) shouting into cell phones in public places. Think back to your childhood, when you made phone calls on a real non-cordless landline phone whose wires had a direct signal path from the handset all the way to the central office. Those phones echoed back a small amount of your voice from the earpiece, and that was exactly how people liked it because if it stopped, you knew beyond doubt that something happened to the phone line and you were now wasting your breath talking. It also kept you from shouting into the phone, because you would have annoyed yourself as well as the person unfortunate enough to be on the other end of the line.
I'm glad Motorola is now officially non-evil. HTC and Samsung have come a long way, but Motorola is a company that genuinely knows how to make a *telephone* and how to design radios that work really well. There's a reason why Motorola has survived into the 21st century despite hardcore competition from Japanese technology and cheap Chinese imports -- their best stuff is really, really good. One advantage of being a company that's been around for about a hundred years is the fact that they have engineers who've worked for them since the 70s and REALLY understand analog signal design. Motorola has guys working for them who understand radio and analog signals with the same passion that we understand digital electronics and programming. It makes a difference, and it shows
The echo has happened to every cell phone I have ever had. Have even had it on some land line calls. It is not an every time thing, just once in a while. I do not think there is anything you can do to prevent it.
When I start hearing my voice its usually because the other person hasme on speaker or they have their in call volume too loud.

Guys...... this feature is technically called "Sidetone" and I'm personally very glad this is in the Photon.
You ever been around some jackass who is basically yelling into his phone (which never actually helps the other party "hear" better)? I bet sidetone would have helped quiet him down a bit. It helps to keep your voice under control as well simply mimicking what you hear anyway when naturally talking out loud. Your head has builtin sidetone
Hello everyone,
I'm considering getting the Motorola Photon mainly for its sidetone and wondered if you still get the sidetone when using a headset thru the 3.5mm jack?
Thanks!

[Q] Speaker not muted when earphones/headphones are plugged in.

Hi all,
I've owned the note since day 1. I've had it replaced because of a charger issue and horrible battery. This new one is a keeper.
However, I just noticed this issue which I don't know if it is normal or what.
When you plug an earphone/headphones to the note, not all sounds are routed to the earphones/headset.
A few examples are, when I'm plugged in then somebody text, call, lock/unlock screen, etc it will sound off both the speaker of the note and the earphones.
It will only exclusively play sound to the earphones when watching videos like in MX player, Doubletwist, watching flash videos in the browser, etc. If it is notifications, it plays on both.
Of course when your on silent mode, you won't hear ringing from the earphones (just beeps).
I actually rooted it (mashi method only using system level root) and I used Titanium backup to freeze some pre-installed apps. Could that be it?
Is this normal behavior?
Thanks
Sorry for the early bump but is anyone having this issue?
This is my 14th day and according to Best Buy I only have 14-days to return it or exchange it. Even though they recently change it to 30 days .. for some reason I'm not covered with the 30 days return policy. I only have 1 1/2 hours before Best Buy closes tonight.
Thanks.
EDIT: I've used iPhone earphones (with mic), Sony Headphones, I've used 3 other earphones .. they all display the same image.
Just try this to be easier. Plug an earphone to your Note .. then call it. If it rings from the speakers while the earphones are connected, that's what I'm talking about. Could anyone please try this .. please.
Just tried your test. Mine does the same thing. Rings both the earphones and external speaker.
I also have the same issue you noted where I get notification sounds on the external speaker. This happens, for example, when playing music. It's even more annoying because it doesn't play it through both, it ONLY plays the notification sound through the external, so if you're listening to earbuds with noise cancelling, you don't even hear it, you just hear a break in the sound.
For better or worse, I believe this is normal operation for these phones with this revision of software. I'm not sure if samsung and/or AT&T do incremental updates to fix little bugs like this? I'm new to android, so I don't know for sure, but I believe that we are pretty much on our own for having this sort of thing fixed. An update *might* eventually fix it (ie the infamous ICS update that we don't know when AT&T will actually get out to us), but until then, my understanding is that we just have to hope that a dev will try to address it. This is versus apple, where updates come out pretty frequently, and a bug this major would certainly be addressed very quickly.
That is just sad. Now I have to put it in silent mode even when earphones are plugged in
I hope Samsung fixes this.
That's stupid. I haven't seen any other reports of this. You have stock ATT ROM, right? Did you call ATT to ask them about it? Could be a "feature" of the Note.
Sad but true. Mine does the same thing. Hadn't noticed it because I haven't used headphones with it yet.
I wonder if this is the reason they didn't put a pair of earbuds in the box like they do with most of their other phones.
just an update. I went to best buy just now and they have 4 samples on the floor. I tried it it on all phones and it works fine. Mine was the only phone having this issue. so I called a rep and showed it to him and he said to bring the receipt tomorrow for replacement. wow this will be my 3rd phone replacement (1St one was a charger issue). and yes i have used stock. I used it on rooted, even saurom. all displays the issue.

Thanks

I'm having the same problem. I am completely stock never rooted, overclocked or removed/froze any apps.. Funny thing I'm also on my second Note already first one because my keyboard wasn't working.. Anyone else having this issue with headphones?
If you do get a new replacement, please post back here once you've set it up and let us know if it does or does not still have this issue. I find it kind of hard to believe that this type of issue would be one that varies from phone to phone. Seems like a hardware or software bug that should be consistent from phone to phone. If it is different, it seems far more likely that there is some setting or application that some of us have changed (or not changed) that is causing the difference.
I thought I had a "good one" so far, and to be honest, reading about a lot of the other problems that people have (that I don't), I'm kind of scared to go get a new one, as I feel as though I might be trading this issue for a different one (or spending a lot of time trading phones in and out).
Update
So I just got off the phone with AT&T and they ran me through the whole factory reset bs and of course that didn't fix the problem.. But the strange thing is that the guy I spoke to said that my phone needed a software update and that I would get it in the next 24 to 48hrs. I'm attaching a screen shot of my about phone because I didn't know that this phone had a software update available. I took this screen shot soon as I hung up the phone with AT&T. I will report back on Wednesday when they said they would call me back to see if the phone is working correctly.. Let me know if you're running different software than me?? (if you don't mind)
ill post an update tomorrow. I wont leave until I got a good one.
again for those who are curious and check if it happens to your phone.
1) make sure it is not on silent mode
2) connect an earphone/headphone to the note
3) call the phone
if it rings out loud. welcome to the club

Just did a test with our skyrocket and note, using the stock samsung headphones that came with the skyrocket
both exhibit the same behaviors
when receiving a call..the ringtone is played only over the headphones
(we both use video caller id so not sure if that matters)
when receiving a txt message the notification is played on the external speaker

Wait, so you said 2 posts earlier that "pretty sure this is normal", then said just now that yours does not work like ours? Which is normal?
From what I uderstand you guys are explaining mine does the exact same thing..and "I am pretty sure this is normal"
I included exactly how mine behaves for reference....so is that the same or different than what yours does?
I am also using an app for video ringer so I will test stock ringers tonight

Update
Ok I talked to the tech at AT&T he was no help at all.. Only thing he told me was that the phone should display a headset icon of some sort.. (I told him mine doesn't) does anyone's?? In the end he told me to it the Device store here in Tampa and if they can't figure it out they would just give me what will be my 3rd Note.. BTW didn't mention anything about a software update this time and yes I asked..
Its an app
I will pass the logs along to someone who might be able to fix it

[Q] Call Quality DNA

I'm hoping it's something I'm missing in the set up or some minor other issue but after I finally got the DNA activated I made two calls.
Both calls were choppy on both ends of the call. This phone has gotten stellar reviews on reception quality. Volume and clarity.
I'm being told that the listener hears only bits and pieces of my voice and I hear the same from them.
All my other phones worked fine from my house where I made the calls.
Any thoughts on this from you guys on what might be happening?
Could something be defective on my DNA? Or does this sometimes happen with new out of the box phones?

Definitely sounds defective. Sound quality on mine is stellar!
I have to concur.... I've made about a dozen calls so far, and I have had no problems with quality at all.

If worse comes to worse (I'm hoping this is going to correct itself) can I return it to a local Verizon store for an exchange or do I have to ship it back to Verizon?
I'm going to try the store first on Friday (and I'd rather be shot then to do it on Black Friday).
Are you guys suggesting that this is probably a bad set?

I'm sure you can exchange in store even if you ordered online. Also, for what it's worth, my call quality has been very, very good. In fact, the clarity, at least on my end, has been noticeably better than the last couple phones I've had so if yours is really that bad when under ideal circumstances, that sounds like it might be a unique issue with your phone.

I don't want to leave this post without a follow up.
Yesterday when I (finally) activated my DNA: I then made two new voice calls.
As I stated above the calls were choppy and very bad on both ends.
I waited until this morning and made some more voice calls. Even from the same location.
All calls have been clear, audio R9, and more or less perfect.
I had forgotten that about five years ago also on a new cell phone: I had this same issue when activating and calling for the first time.
Nobody could hear me clearly and I could not hear them. The next day and forever after all was fine.
I am not a mobile device geek but I'm sure there is a deep dark explanation for this anomaly.
My son told me that I don't need to know what was happening yesterday but that today is what counts.
I still wonder.
The end result of this problem is that I did have a defective DNA device after all!
It did not fix itself, as I alluded to above.
The Verizon store gave me a new DNA and all is now good.
So.....for anyone interested, it is possible to receive a defective hardware (reception/radio/speaker/whatever) issue with this set.
At Verizon right now seeing if they give me an exchange on my DNA

Tell them that a new device should correct it. It did for me.
"Device type guys" might love the challenge of sitting around waiting for a future HTC update fix.
Just get a new set.....and walk away.
They wouldn't exchange it they couldn't get it to replicate the problem.

The problem is a fact!
Fortunately the employees at my store know me and know that I do not imagine issues.
A new DNA phone (for me) eliminated the problem.
When making calls you will hear the person you are speaking to clear as a bell.
But they are hearing your voice in the following manner:
1. Your voice fades in and out.
2. Some of your words are chopped out.
3. You sound to them like you are talking in a "tunnel".
Call Verizon and tell them that other buyers have successfully returned this set and the new one issued had no problems.
Get a new phone and don't settle for a HDC update.
Yes....some calls are fine. But I don't want "some" calls to be fine!
I want every call to be great on a new phone.

Yeah I told them other people were having call quality issues and were exchanging them. They told me if I could get it to do it again to bring it back so we'll see how it goes

I'm not having any issues at all with call quality, but I have noticed that my touchscreen isn't nearly as sensitive as my Rezound was. I am constantly getting missed letters when typing on keyboard or having to double tap 3 or 4 times before my screen zooms. I'm thinking this is also a hardware issue and will likely try to get it swapped out soon. Has anyone else had sensitivity problems?
I need help... I keep getting told that the phone quality on the other end is just terrible that the other person just cant hear me at all. (That I sound like im in a tunnel and far away from my phone) I need to figure out a way to record the proof so i can take it to a verizon and get an exchange. Can someone or anybody give me any suggestions? I need help really bad.
go under phone settings and make sure voice privacy or any other sound cancelling settings are not turned on. Those really screw up call quality for me.

The store turned off my "voice privacy". That did not fix the problem.
They gave me a new phone and it works flawlessly with excellent voice quality.

Tell the store you want a new phone! Call them from another location and speak to the manager. Ask him or her how well they can hear you.
My phone was so bad that every call I made the receiving party noticed it dramatically.
Send me a PM and I'll identify the store or you can ship the phone directly to Verizon within your 14 day period for a replacement set.
Your phone is defective and it's not going to change.

To me it almost seems like a distance thing. If I call people that are in the same house as me it seems to be working ok but for some reason making longer distance calls is where the problem is... I'm being told that I sound super muffeled and very distant. When I switch over to my speakerphone Mic they can hear me with no problem
