The beginner's guide to finding a ROM [i777 edition] - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hello! So I hear you want to find a ROM that a) has great battery life b) makes your phone look like the GS3 or Nexus 4 c) makes you breakfast or d) all of the above. Well sadly I cannot tell you what the "best ROM" is because I am not you. I do not do what you do on an every day basis and, likewise, I do not use my phone for the same reasons that you do. Of course, I can help you find a ROM, but in the end it boils down to you. This guide will show you the ins and outs of being a ROM, er, consumer?
Battery life? is a common problem among smartphone owners. The good news is that with the right settings and almost any custom ROM, you will be able to make your battery last (almost?) a day. You can turn your brightness down and turn off GPS and Wifi when not using those features. That will most definitely conserve your battery life. But, overall, battery life depends on your usage of the phone.
Finding a preferred version of Android may help you in your hunt for ROMs. You may like ICS for its stability. You may like Jellybean 4.2 for it's bleeding-edge new features (or you may hate it for that reason). Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone to try different versions of Android.
Touchwiz or Stock Android? is another important question to ask. Really, this question is all about aesthetics and maybe a couple of features. Touchwiz is what ships with your Galaxy S II and the GS2's newest TW update would be 4.1 (which means it's essentially up to date). Touchwiz is developed by Samsung and can be modified but not built from source. Stock Android is what is on the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 and can be built from source, allowing faster updates for you.
Stability? If you are using your phone for daily use, you will want a Daily Driver, or stable ROM. These ROMs will allow you to use (almost) all of the features that came with your phone and more.
Now, for the million dollar question... What is the best ROM? There is no best ROM, silly! There are a variety of ROMs for a reason, and that reason is that every user is different. There will never be a right or wrong ROM or one that rises above the rest because it truly is a matter of preference.
How do I find the ROM that is best for me, then? You flash different things until you find something you love and something that works for your personal needs!

Perhaps I meant to say the most productive ROM. I plan on trying to build my own JB drivers after my device gets fixed by Samsung. A real learning curve for someone like me! What are your "favorite" ROMs?
I know all ROMs are unique, and have millions of variations. It's just the fact that some of their bugs are really, well, dangerous for us "n00b" users. I'd rather feel confident that the ROM I am flasing on my s2 will actually work, and not break or brick my phone. The pros (like extended battery life and stock ROM feel) are just those things that make custom ROMs amazing!

Well currently I'm running PAC ROM. I like how I have it set up currently... it has a few bugs, but those usually only take place at boot. I've used Miui and Samsung JB before also... I've actually flashed most of the ROMs available for i777 (both built from source and ported).
Absolutely! That's why before trying out a ROM I personally will read the OP and user comments and whatnot. You always have to be careful of special instructions and bugs and things. The good thing about the GS2 is that it is almost virtually unbrickable (thanks to Odin/Heimdall). But it is always good to be careful when doing these things... From my experience flashing via CWM isn't really unsafe as long as you have a ROM AND kernel made for your phone. Kernels contain the recovery and vital files, so having a kernel made for the i777 is very important. Most i9100 ROMs will work on the i777 with tweaking (swapping out kernel, keylayout files, etc.) but you should NEVER flash a kernel or (not ported) ROM not made for our phone because that's when things can potentially (and probably will) get sticky.
I've been flashing ROMs since December 2011 or so... I've never hardbricked (read: rendered unusable) a device through ROM flashing in CWM. I've softbricked many times however (bootloop, etc.) but those were easily recoverable through either my kernel's recovery or Odin. Am I saying to not be careful? No, of course not. But my point is you've got to take some sort of risk if you want that better battery life or stock feel. It's up to you to decide whether or not that risk is worth it.
Of course, if you have any questions not answered in a development thread, you should ask them in that thread. I'm sure someone would be happy to help you as long as you have used the search feature. I'm also here as a user/flashaholic/porter/modder if you need any help but I can't guarantee I'll have an answer for you.
Sorry if I didn't answer your question in a satisfactory way and sorry if I made this too long, haha.

Shostock 3 looks pretty awesome! Once I get my SGH-S730m unlocked, I will see to try Shostock 3 (and eventually the PAC ROM if all goes well) on my S2. I always want a back-up phone just in case.
Thanks for the help!

My daily driver is also sho3, I used to use CM7, Cm7.1, CM9, then CM10. Cyanogenmod is great for experimenting, but I feel like stockbased rom is more stable and functional (MHL) IMO.

Using AJ's Cooked rom. Nice speed and UI.

[Q] New owner, what is the best ROM available?

Which ROM out there has the best support and the least flaws? I know none will be perfect but I would like a ROM that is fast, stable, and has optimal battery life. I know i could use the V6 Supercharger to make a ROM faster but I would like to know what ROM you guys recommend? Thanks
For the 10 billionth time: It's really up to you to figure this out. Considering that there's only 4 custom ROMs available (for the 7510), I think you are capable of doing the research yourself.

I'm going to second the in paris v5, I just rooted and flashed and couldn't be happier. There is one clich that I found and that is on some web pages in browser it will not let you go back with the back arrows, small problem but so far the only one I see.
Task650 makes the best ROM.

check out the dev. forums, do a little research. If your asking you shouldn't be flashing roms really. All v6 supercharger does in most cases is mess things up
So avoid flashing supercharger? It doesn't take a computer genius to flash a ROM, I just don't have the time to flash every ROM and mess with it, thanks for the positive responses though.

I have yet to see any real proof that the supercharger script actually makes this thing better. I have flashed and run all of the different ROMs, and its really up to you as far as look and feel are concerned.
As far as support goes, I will say that Task and Phantom has been great in keeping us bug free, but I have not interacted with the other devs as much, and so I won't knock their Roms because I can't say what their level of support is.
Happy Flashing
Overcome is good too
I will say that I like both in Paris and Overcome. In Paris has a custom theme which I'm not fond of but you can install the touchwiz theme over it if you prefer. I like Overcome because it is the stock honeycomb theme.
It's really a rather personal choice so you do have to try more than one to decide.

[Q] ROM recommendations now that ICS OTA is officially cancelled.

Figured to just make one thread for people to throw in their suggestions for ROMS for those people that were waiting for the official ICS, but was let down. Now they can go ROM out their phones to use as backup/main/fun, etc...
Should probably put down which ROMs have fingerprint and/or webtop support too for those that still want to use either or both of those functions.
Good Luck to all!

What do you mean "FP broken"? As far as I know, FP works just fine with all CM7 ROMs.
Webtop never worked with any CM and very likely never will. There are alternatives to webtop so not a huge deal.
I gotta say...honestly although the intention of this thread is good, it's really not helping all that much, there have been like 10 different rec's already. I mean I guess at least it's a place to start, but I wish there was some info about each rom rather than saying "this one's the best." Maybe it would be nice to have links to the roms and a link on how to install roms? I'm not expecting to be spoonfed here, my Atrix is rooted and the bootloader is unlocked, but I haven't been following the rom scene at all waiting for ICS so I'm a bit lost. Just my input, thanks.

There are separate threads about each and every ROM mentioned. Do you seriously expect people to copy descriptions and feature lists for each and every ROM? This is not a ROM summary thread, it says right in the title these are just RECOMMENDATIONS. Just go to the respective thread and read up.
IMO this thread (and a few others like it) is pretty pointless anyway, because the question "which ROM is best" is pretty stupid. There's no such thing as "the best ROM", this is just too individual. Different people look for different things in a ROM. You should just find ones that seem interesting and try them out yourself, and then decide which one works best FOR YOU PERSONALLY.

The OP says ROM recommendations not "the best ROM" as you led the readers to believe.
Why don't you all [Members] policing XDA just ignore a thread that you don't like instead of posting your dislikes about it? I think that is more waste of XDA resources than the OP. An ignored thread would quickly disappears anyway but the feuds between members would lead to unproductive environment. Just saying!
Mrom
I would recomend to stay with a GB rom for at least the next 2 months. For me the best one is Mrom which is based on CM7 and has given me the best battery life.
If you want to try a JB rom the I strongly recomend Epinter´s. It´s updated very often and runs smoothly and has very little bugs.
My recommendation would be any kind of ROM which will install on a Samsung device.
CM7 is rock solid and a very trustworthy daily driver for the Atrix. Great battery life - IMHO better battery life than stock. Highly recommended!...

Whats a good rom?

Ok so I have a mdk version of this phone and I want to put a solid rom on it what one is the best do you think of the non tw ones? And another stupid question if I flash like dirty unicorn does it lock down the bootloadrr?
There is no right answer to this... the best rom is the one you like the most, so you need to start flashing and finding this out for yourself.
Flashing roms will not lock your bootloader. Only if you take an official update will it do that.
what the above user said is correct, the best ROM depends on the user. However, i have a rooted mdk gs4 and i was using stock for quite a whole and happy with it. after a while tho, the slight lag and other annoyances got to me so i decided to try a rom. I should note that this is my first android device, I am a long time iphone user and jailbreak expert, so i'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. I decided to try Hyperdrive recently and I absoultely love it. its basically a hybrid of touchwiz for gs4 and note 3 with all of the bloated BS crap removed and lots of customization options. it is much faster and solves some of my gripes and was easy to install. I also chose to try it first because it was similar to what i was already on so it was a good first ROM choice in my opinion. it was also super easy to install. I am gonna try CM11 when it gets released to see if I like it, but for now i would recommend you try hyperdrive

All the aosp roms bring something to the table. The touch wiz roms for this phone are great as well. There are fan boys for all of them.
See what you like.
That said. I can tell you which developers I'd follow. I say this based on user support and rom support, and listening to features requests, and a quality product. or a combination there of. Sbreen94, nitroglycerin33, dubbsy, beanstown106 , Bdogg for DU is starting out right. Andybones is also tops but I haven't seen as much of him lately.
Edit: forgot DaMadOne is is doing nice things on his aokp kang.
With the big aosp custom rom's you have a ton of peer support buy typically @ the mercy of whatever the larger team is working on in terms of bug fixes etc...
I have less experience with sacs so can't say there.

You've been around long enough to know comparing the efforts of developers isn't good form on these boards. We're lucky that we have several devs working on projects that have come a long way. Unfortunately, all of the current JB and KK ROMs have some type of issue, mostly involving Bluetooth and portable hotspot tethering. At the moment I'd say the PACman ROM is closest to being ready. Followed closely by evervolv. I haven't tried MIUI yet, but the reactions in that thread have been very positive. Of course you could also try one of the CM ROMs which many have been using as daily drivers for awhile. Read the threads, see which ones have issues that would negatively affect you the most, then try the one that suits your needs the best.
Well yes I know what you're on about, I know about the developers putting in enormous amounts of efforts in the roms but the point was to highlight ics roms or those based on it seem to be bug free, I could use something like that myself to come up with a rom myself

Your first post asked about JB, this one about ICS. Two different animals. On ICS we have many great fully functioning stable ROMs it boils down to the level of bloat you want removed for you, the theming, and the amount of tweaking and optimization. The leanest one that still maintains a fully functional sense is the one I'm using the Energy ROM, however, it's dated and the dev indicated last week that he'd be updating soon. SuperAfnan has a couple of outstanding ROMs both themed and stock. The ARHD ROM was updated yesterday and is totally stock with tweaks, it's probably the closest to the stock factory ROM. Then if you can live with a few minor bugs involving Bluetooth and tethering, the Viper Amaze is one of the most heavily tweaked, optimized, and full featured ROMs for our device, and it's sense 4 not 3.6 like the rest. I hope this helps.
Yes I'm on the energy one too tried nearly all of them but came back to this one. Somehow the amaze doesn't feel that smooth with either of the jellybean roms, which would you suggest for 4.1.2?

ROM comparison threads are not allowed. You need to test them out and find one that works for you by yourself. Please read the threads instead of asking because ROMS are subjective.
Please do not take developer work for granted.
As @Odysseus1962 stated there's so l many to choose from and he has already provided you with information so please just read the ROM threads. I'll give you a hint, there's a "broken" / "not working" section on the ROM threads so you can find bugs accordingly. Ones without it are usually more-or-less problem free.

Some moderators have been shutting these kinds of threads down do to the fact that you are asking for someone to rate ones work over another, but I will chime in before that happens.
I am not going to rate one over the other though, as all phones run differently as you are finding out.
2 roms that MY phone had no problem running......Padawan and Black Jelly.
These 2 are close to stock with bloatware removed. Remember this is your dads phone. There are plenty of other roms I like, but require more maintainence. How often are you going to want to fiddle with dads phone.
Not much has been happening on these threads. You will not see many recent issues. That is how stable they are. I will recommend you read and in Padawan, I will refer you back to p. 355 to about p. 380. This was just after update and many issues were solved at that time. My phone never ran better.
If you get lag, read again, you werent paying attention.
Good luck.

If you follow development rom threads you can answer your own question. That is what is expected of people to do rather than create threads like this. That being said I don't really know what you are hearing about 4.4.2 roms but my wife has been running a 4.4.2 rom for well over a week without any reboot. After installing uber,a screen jitter patch, and the camera patch everything seems to work fine. Granted she really doesn't use bluetooth much but when she does it seems to work and there is an echo when using speaker phone on the other end. So really only reason not to go to 4.4.2 would be the speaker phone issue which I believe is present on any rom above 4.2. There is no way I could live on 4.1 or below personally.
Anyway to answer your question read the threads in the development section of this forum and educate yourself. Maybe even go as far as to flash a few roms and try them out and decide which rom is right for you.
Battery on Kit Kat seems to have a bit of a shorter life span also.
What you were stating Butcher, may be the reasons he is asking for stable. Patch here, kernal there, 4.4 has been very stable. But he is putting it on dads phone. If I were flashing dads phone, I would want something I am not having to tweak so much, especially if dad cant tweak himself.
Would you want to change the brakes on dads car every other day. Some roms are like a medication. The phone seems to build up tolerances, then need to make an adjustment.
But yes, read.

Yes thank you.
I would usually just flash away any rom ghat sounds promising to me. And yes i would tweak as much needed to be exactly how i wanted. From overclocking to to voltages, to removing navbar to what ever is needed.
But like you said this is for my father and i would want to have it be the most stable ao he wont have to deal with reeboots and and weird screen fails.
And i have been reading and uber has been mentioner a lot. Some say good some say its bad.
Kinda have been seeing a mixed opinion about it. Thats why i have been asking for what somebody consideres a stable rom.
Also i dont have the opportunity to mess with his phone when ever i want.

If you went to the Samsung website, you can get an official upgrade there or even calling the carrier and have the upgrade it. JB is the official upgrade. If something goes wrong there, then at least they are resposible if something goes wrong.
