Stable roms? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hello. I want to flash a rom on my fathers note.
Will anyonw be kind enough to point me out to what is considered the most stable rom.
Preferable nothing over 4.2.
I flash cm10.2 and it has a weird thing where the screen fails.
I have carbon 4.4.2 on my razr hd and it works flawless. But it seems that roms on thia device arent doing so well.
If anybody ia able to help me i would apreciatte it a bunch.

Some moderators have been shutting these kinds of threads down do to the fact that you are asking for someone to rate ones work over another, but I will chime in before that happens.
I am not going to rate one over the other though, as all phones run differently as you are finding out.
2 roms that MY phone had no problem running......Padawan and Black Jelly.
These 2 are close to stock with bloatware removed. Remember this is your dads phone. There are plenty of other roms I like, but require more maintainence. How often are you going to want to fiddle with dads phone.
Not much has been happening on these threads. You will not see many recent issues. That is how stable they are. I will recommend you read and in Padawan, I will refer you back to p. 355 to about p. 380. This was just after update and many issues were solved at that time. My phone never ran better.
If you get lag, read again, you werent paying attention.
Good luck.

If you follow development rom threads you can answer your own question. That is what is expected of people to do rather than create threads like this. That being said I don't really know what you are hearing about 4.4.2 roms but my wife has been running a 4.4.2 rom for well over a week without any reboot. After installing uber,a screen jitter patch, and the camera patch everything seems to work fine. Granted she really doesn't use bluetooth much but when she does it seems to work and there is an echo when using speaker phone on the other end. So really only reason not to go to 4.4.2 would be the speaker phone issue which I believe is present on any rom above 4.2. There is no way I could live on 4.1 or below personally.
Anyway to answer your question read the threads in the development section of this forum and educate yourself. Maybe even go as far as to flash a few roms and try them out and decide which rom is right for you.

Battery on Kit Kat seems to have a bit of a shorter life span also.
What you were stating Butcher, may be the reasons he is asking for stable. Patch here, kernal there, 4.4 has been very stable. But he is putting it on dads phone. If I were flashing dads phone, I would want something I am not having to tweak so much, especially if dad cant tweak himself.
Would you want to change the brakes on dads car every other day. Some roms are like a medication. The phone seems to build up tolerances, then need to make an adjustment.
But yes, read.

Yes thank you.
I would usually just flash away any rom ghat sounds promising to me. And yes i would tweak as much needed to be exactly how i wanted. From overclocking to to voltages, to removing navbar to what ever is needed.
But like you said this is for my father and i would want to have it be the most stable ao he wont have to deal with reeboots and and weird screen fails.
And i have been reading and uber has been mentioner a lot. Some say good some say its bad.
Kinda have been seeing a mixed opinion about it. Thats why i have been asking for what somebody consideres a stable rom.
Also i dont have the opportunity to mess with his phone when ever i want.
He is on gingerbread and god is that slow.
Thank you both i will see the roms that were mentioned here, and read for others.

If you went to the Samsung website, you can get an official upgrade there or even calling the carrier and have the upgrade it. JB is the official upgrade. If something goes wrong there, then at least they are resposible if something goes wrong.

[Q] best ICS or JB ROM?

Hey guys, I'm working a lot of hours and I need to have a reliable phone, which ICS or JB ROM is best? I'm new to this phone, so, I don't know what my options are.

I would say epinter one is the most reliable one for now. i bet he is cooking somthing good with his atm ROM and the leak also, so it would be even better.

Did you say reliable?
Then forget about both ICS and JB and go with GB. Any variant will do.
ICS/JB ROMs are just too unfinished yet to be a reliable daily driver, IMO. People are woking hard on them though, so there is no doubt they will one day become as reliable as good old GB.
Agreed.

This is a very accurate summary of where we stand. I'm still running Nottachtrix 1.3.1 even though Nottach left the Atrix over a month ago, just because everything works on it. Bluetooth, wifi, HWA, Ubuntop, all cameras, and even a decent selection of themes for both android and linux.
But with the new leak libs, there is sure to be a fantastic CM9/10 ROM that takes advantage of them. We just have to be patient.
Hi
If you're not using thoroughly your phone, the CM10 form Epinter is now reliable enough for a daily use.
I was using CM7 since months, and after trying CM10 last week, i'm still using it and have found no real limitations for a basic usage.
I'd recommend you to keep a GB based rom if you want to have the most reliable system and if video recording is a primary need for you.
Just my $.02: I don't even use the "latest" GB 2.3.7 ROM: I've returned to Neutrino 2.6 EE (the latest is 2.91 at this writing). CM 7.2 RC1 was the most stable + efficient ROM from the CM gurus for my Atrix. I charge my phone once every two or three days too.
Think about driving a car that everyone laughs at that's never needing to go to the shop. Gits ya there, gits ya back, reliably and without anyone really paying attention to it, and it just goes and goes and holds its own against everyone else. Newest doesn't always mean best; trustworthiness does.
Epinter's CM10 worked OK for me despite the few well known bugs.
You might give the brand new AtrICS ROM a shot. It's hard to believe that it could already be as stable as it claims to be, but with working hardware acceleration, it should have some bugs fixed as compared to CM10.

I switched from epinter's CM10 to AtrICS today and found it to be a fairly usable. You trade some features for others.
I prefer the interface of CM10 to AtrICS, but AtrICS feels really snappy thanks to the HWA. I'll probably get used to ICS after a while. The Camera works well, but, like others I noticed that after switching from the back camera to the front, there was some corruption on the right side of the screen. Going into Camera Settings and unchecking then rechecking the Widescreen box fixes this. There are problems with the unlock screen of AtrICS; it can be slow to appear when you press the power button and I have seen the screen turn on for a split second before turning right back off. If you let the phone go into a deep sleep, you may see a black screen for a minute, in my case the unlock screen did eventually appear. I've had one reboot right after closing a bunch of apps running in the background then trying to open a browser.
WiFi works great with AtrICS and mobile data feels faster than I remember.
My mobile gone hot after a few minute use AtrICS, and experienced network lost. The phone also hot with epinter 's version.
Restored TopSmart1.3. GB has the stablity I trust.

The beginner's guide to finding a ROM [i777 edition]

Hello! So I hear you want to find a ROM that a) has great battery life b) makes your phone look like the GS3 or Nexus 4 c) makes you breakfast or d) all of the above. Well sadly I cannot tell you what the "best ROM" is because I am not you. I do not do what you do on an every day basis and, likewise, I do not use my phone for the same reasons that you do. Of course, I can help you find a ROM, but in the end it boils down to you. This guide will show you the ins and outs of being a ROM, er, consumer?
Battery life? is a common problem among smartphone owners. The good news is that with the right settings and almost any custom ROM, you will be able to make your battery last (almost?) a day. You can turn your brightness down and turn off GPS and Wifi when not using those features. That will most definitely conserve your battery life. But, overall, battery life depends on your usage of the phone.
Finding a preferred version of Android may help you in your hunt for ROMs. You may like ICS for its stability. You may like Jellybean 4.2 for it's bleeding-edge new features (or you may hate it for that reason). Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone to try different versions of Android.
Touchwiz or Stock Android? is another important question to ask. Really, this question is all about aesthetics and maybe a couple of features. Touchwiz is what ships with your Galaxy S II and the GS2's newest TW update would be 4.1 (which means it's essentially up to date). Touchwiz is developed by Samsung and can be modified but not built from source. Stock Android is what is on the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 and can be built from source, allowing faster updates for you.
Stability? If you are using your phone for daily use, you will want a Daily Driver, or stable ROM. These ROMs will allow you to use (almost) all of the features that came with your phone and more.
Now, for the million dollar question... What is the best ROM? There is no best ROM, silly! There are a variety of ROMs for a reason, and that reason is that every user is different. There will never be a right or wrong ROM or one that rises above the rest because it truly is a matter of preference.
How do I find the ROM that is best for me, then? You flash different things until you find something you love and something that works for your personal needs!

Perhaps I meant to say the most productive ROM. I plan on trying to build my own JB drivers after my device gets fixed by Samsung. A real learning curve for someone like me! What are your "favorite" ROMs?
I know all ROMs are unique, and have millions of variations. It's just the fact that some of their bugs are really, well, dangerous for us "n00b" users. I'd rather feel confident that the ROM I am flasing on my s2 will actually work, and not break or brick my phone. The pros (like extended battery life and stock ROM feel) are just those things that make custom ROMs amazing!

Well currently I'm running PAC ROM. I like how I have it set up currently... it has a few bugs, but those usually only take place at boot. I've used Miui and Samsung JB before also... I've actually flashed most of the ROMs available for i777 (both built from source and ported).
Absolutely! That's why before trying out a ROM I personally will read the OP and user comments and whatnot. You always have to be careful of special instructions and bugs and things. The good thing about the GS2 is that it is almost virtually unbrickable (thanks to Odin/Heimdall). But it is always good to be careful when doing these things... From my experience flashing via CWM isn't really unsafe as long as you have a ROM AND kernel made for your phone. Kernels contain the recovery and vital files, so having a kernel made for the i777 is very important. Most i9100 ROMs will work on the i777 with tweaking (swapping out kernel, keylayout files, etc.) but you should NEVER flash a kernel or (not ported) ROM not made for our phone because that's when things can potentially (and probably will) get sticky.
I've been flashing ROMs since December 2011 or so... I've never hardbricked (read: rendered unusable) a device through ROM flashing in CWM. I've softbricked many times however (bootloop, etc.) but those were easily recoverable through either my kernel's recovery or Odin. Am I saying to not be careful? No, of course not. But my point is you've got to take some sort of risk if you want that better battery life or stock feel. It's up to you to decide whether or not that risk is worth it.
Of course, if you have any questions not answered in a development thread, you should ask them in that thread. I'm sure someone would be happy to help you as long as you have used the search feature. I'm also here as a user/flashaholic/porter/modder if you need any help but I can't guarantee I'll have an answer for you.
Sorry if I didn't answer your question in a satisfactory way and sorry if I made this too long, haha.
Shostock 3 looks pretty awesome! Once I get my SGH-S730m unlocked, I will see to try Shostock 3 (and eventually the PAC ROM if all goes well) on my S2. I always want a back-up phone just in case.
Thanks for the help!

[Q] fully working stable jellybean rom?

hey guys, quick question?? ive been running thtrough jellybean roms but theyre all buggy in their own ways.. i was wondering if theres a particular jelly ROM thats stable enough to use everyday? som give me "com.process.yadayada.com" errors and in some i cant get back out of fullscreen videos viewed through the browser?? lol i just really want a chill stable version of jelly.. could be 4.1.1 for all i care i just want it to function like a phone is supposed to.. and believe me i tried everything.. wiping cache/dalvik/factory, fixing permissions, reflashing the roms and nothing?? maybe im not doing something right? thanks in advance everyone.
All JB roms are going to have some bugs. The code for the note has not been officially released from Samsung. Just something you have to deal with and probably why no one has answered your question.
If you want my opinion try Jamie's latest and greatest CM 10.1 build. It's under the Android development thread. For me it has been the most stable.

You may want to try different governor and schedulers. Some are more stable then others and different ones work best for different phones. For my phone ondemand/sio is the best setup.
JamieD's UNOFFICIAL CM 10.1 preview 4 is very stable is based on the latest 4.2.2 and can be tweaked in many wonderful ways to work how u want it... I would trust ANY of his ROMs ... If u want 4.1.2 get his PA ROM from official development. If u want all of the latest features and also like updates then go for 10.1

Just to be the Devil's Advocate here, I actually had quite the opposite results. When I first started flashing and learning more and more, I got super into running different scripts and experimenting with different governors and schedulers...i think just based on the intrigue of having the capability itself, as well as seeing all of these posters on here saying how smooth and solid their phones were after running ________ governor at these super high over clocked speeds.
But no matter what combo i tried, I would always either LOSE UI speed, start overheating at the first sign of additional processing, drain battery like it's going out of style, or a combination of all three.
So I finally just gave up and started being patient every time I flashed a new ROM, just sticking it out for a few days on the stock setup...and sure enough, I've never been happier - UI smoothness, processing speed, battery temp, and battery life in general have never been better and more consistent for me since I "wizened up". Now keep in mind, this (like every ROM, kernel, etc) is rarely ever going to be exactly the same for anyone else - I have no doubt that your setups are working great for you - so take it with a grain of salt of course. Just wanted to provide my two cents!

i dont think that protable hotspot works on any CM10.1 rom. i also have P5 and and also P1, P2,etc....usb tethering is the only way that it works.
i also tried apps like FoxFi and WiTether and they dont work on this.
but i read in this thread, ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2082057 ), that running it without a password lets it work. i have not confirmed this yet.

Been using Jellybeer for a few days now with no problems. Loving this rom for sure.

ROM question

I know there isn't a wrong or right answer for this. I also know that it depends on preference, but I would like to know what ROM someone would recommend for me.
I'm running stock ICS and my phone has gotten a bit slow. I know kit kat would have helped this phone so much but as I understand it's not going to be available on this phone. Stability is important cause this is my daily driver. Video playback and games are also important cause my kids love getting my phone. Last but not least is a functioning camera/camcorder. With that said which ROM would you recommend. If you want to say why and link a How to would also be great.

Arctic ICS

MIUI
2:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2164334
And for over or under clocking go with Motomizer Expert Edition https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jydaddy.optimizer&hl=en
Yes the moderator will move it.

I just realized that I said I was running ICS when I'm actually running JB.. By the way, are any of the ROMs based on kit kat?
Crumplet what's the difference with between motomizer free and pro? I ran the one touch optimizer on the free version and can't see any difference.

It is ment for ICS, not JB.

No wonder I didn't notice any difference. Is there a jb rom you would recommend? Or are the ics roms better?

[Q] i717 Running really slow & Questions

Hi everyone,
I'm pretty new here, as in I don't normally post but I've been part of the community doing things to my android devices for a while. I am definitely not completely a noob, as I have flashed several phones all successfully. However I am trumped with my current situation.
I have a Galaxy Note i717 and currently is flashed with Padawan JB V4. It is a sweet ROM so thanks to those developers for pulling this through for the community. Anyways here is my problem ~ It runs particularly slow. Everything takes 4 or 5 seconds to load..simple things like loading the keyboard take that time and it gets really frustrating.
I have searched and searched to no avail, except for one forum post which said you have to do a factory reset right before doing any rom flashes. Now this piece of advice is on every ROM page, every user must have seen those words before as well. I definitely did not forget to reset my phone prior to doing the upgrade. So I am certain it is not the lack of a factory reset which is causing my phone these slow problems. With all this in mind, I have overclocked my phone using Trickster Mod, it helps a little bit, but gets slow again over time.
Here are my questions.
- If I installed a different Kernel, could my phone operate at all faster?
- Is Padawan V4 slow for everyone else and that is just the way life is going to be for my Galaxy Note?
- Do you guys have anything to suggest.
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate your help.
Alright so after reading your title I already knew what Rom you were running.
Padawan is one of the 2 Touchwiz rooms out there. Notorious for leading people to post about lag or running slow. The Trickster mod can be tricky the first time or two. The Touchwiz rooms may not quite be as snappy as some others available with 4.3 or 4.4 but a very solid Rom in itself.
First thing I will suggest is disable the ripple effect in your lock screen options. That alone will most likely take care of 60+% of your issue.
You may be new here, don't know you post count. even if you can't post in development yet, you can still read. I would now steer you in the direction of the Padawan thread and more specifically p355- p378ish. There you will find many such as myself trying to get these exact same issues resolved. After that my phone had never ran better.
You really don't need an alternate kernel in my opinion. Many fell back on that option running 4.2 rooms which were notorious for reboots and an alternate kernel was a sort of hands-on to remedy issue.
If we can get your post count up and get you posting in development, you will find many helpful people. Don't get you feathers ruffled though on the occasional smart [email protected]@ response. 98% of it is in good fun, but not everyone takes it that way.
Hope this helps.
Any more questions or comments only counts toward your post count right?

Hey Captemo thanks for your reading redirection. They should be putting all those settings up on the main page of the Padawan files. It would make life so much easier
So I got my Note working pretty decently well...then I went out and purchased the Note 3. The Note 3 is wild compared to the Note 1, so many newer features. Pretty amazing.
Thanks again!

The Trickster mod is not specific to the Padawan rom, it is just the first place that I actually saw it. I think thread is only going to detail what developer actually made himself, but a seperate thread would probably be good idea.
Congrats on Note 3, I hear it is decent. Myself have just got a Mega 6.3, but I am going to stick around here too. Some good folk here, if you cant take a good jab to the ribs every once in a while.
Thanks for posting that you have solution, many dont and it leaves people hanging.

I have slammed many myself, one of those shots to the ribs may have been me. However it is how you express yourself. The OP on this I could tell was new and sounded as if he did try and figure out himself. He was also limited to where he could post.
I am partial to the Padawan thread as that it where I learned so much from the regulars there.
Thanks for the compliment my friend.

After playing with a huge load of JB roms, I have decided to revert back to ICS and boy was it the best decision I have ever made. Not even going try playing around with kit kat based roms since I don't have the time right now. My gut feeling is telling me 4.4.2 won't perform well either.
Only reason I started playing around with the roms is because when i first bought the phone used a couple months ago, it was using JB as well. Thought built in TRIM with 4.3 would help but of course it didn't.
Not a fan of CM9 due to the bugs so I lack a lot customisation atm with my 4.0.4 but it does the trick, silky smooth as well. Root access gives enough customization for my usage anyway.
Anyhow that's my 2 cents. If you want a fast and reliable device, go back to ICS. It sort of sucked at first when you realize everything your missing out with one of the community based roms but sooner or later you get used to it.
