Fastboot via USB? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have searched and tried various things, but not found exactly what I hoped for.
I've got a 'sim free' (carrier unlocked) Atrix, which I use a 3 sim card with. The screen was smashed up (ran over it with my 200kg powered wheelchair!) and while it had worked for several months with the broken screen, in a case, I decided to change it. The battery had also died. I changed the screen, and then plugged it in to charge. It will not turn back on. It could be either a battery issue, or something happened when I opened it up to change the screen and digitizer.
Battery - the green LED shows when it's connected to the PC or Atrix dock, but does not show when it's plugged into any kind of plugsocket charger, OEM and otherwise. PC doesn't recognise it as there. I tried connecting with no battery in. Again, green light shows on PC usb connection, and dock, but not via plugsocket charger. Phone still doesn't turn on.
Past - I've sometimes found it takes hours to have enough charge to turn on again, if it gets very low. A few times I've needed to use the OEM plugsocket charger, rather than the computer usb, for it to turn on again. Never like this, though.
Tried - tried to load via fastboot, by holding down volume button and pressing large on/off button. Nothing happens at all. I have tried this many times.
I don't particularly want/need to root, but I am desparate to get this phone working again, if at all possible.
Is there a way to get into fastboot via a USB cable - force it to turn on somehow? Any other ideas?
Please do link me if there is a thread I've missed that asks this - I've read and searched quite a bit, but not found anything that worked yet. Thanks

Enable usb debugging, get adb binaries for your pc OS and:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader

Thanks for replying. Is there a way to enable USB debugging without the phone turning on? Because currently, I have no way to get it to work to change settings. I have a feeling that USB debugging may already be turned on, but I'm not sure, and I can't turn it on (even with OEM charger).

I'm not sure, in reading this, if you replaced the battery with a new one? As you've disassembled your phone to get to the screen, what would you think about taking it apart again and checking that you have connected everything correctly (having a look at the pictures on the ifixit site there are 3 ribbons connecting the motherboard) Also, when you have the motherboard out check the usb/hdmi connections. You obviously have a connection of sorts for you to get a green light.

Yeah - I did actually do that (take it apart and double/triple check everything) and as far as I can tell, everything is correct; certainly the three ribbon cables are, and there doesn't seem to be anything else hardware wise that I can see is a problem. It did, at one point, smell briefly of electronics, but there was the possibility that could have been something else/my middle-of-the-night-paranoia-that-I-killed-my-phone. It doesn't smell now, and I'm not certain it was the phone at all, anyway.
I haven't replaced the battery for a new one - it's the same one. I have left it on charge for upwards of 12 hours both connected to USB (3) and to the charger dock, as well as several hours connected to the OEM charger via the plugsocket.

You're a braver man than me in replacing the screen... I need to do mine but looking at the videos/pictures of taking the ribbons off (and putting them back on!!) looks a job too far for me.
If it were me I would be thinking about getting a replacement battery because all your other options depend on your phone turning on.

flyer absolutely dead - red light after hibernate?

Hi,
i have a european htc flyer with LeeDroids actual custom rom (GB).
Today I drove my car, while charging it with a special 12V - Micro USB-Car Cable.
I tried google navigation and some other features and after that I chose HIBERNATE from the power-menu.
After half an hour I wanted to reactivate the device but everything I try - it simply wont start. display stays black, i tried every button (including the combination to bring it in the recovery mode). nothing works. the red light next to the power button is on (as if it is still loading).
has anyone an idea, what i can try to start the device, is it a brick? what about garantuee in this state? what should i do??
please help, thx
You need to give it time on the proper wall charger. Red indicates a completley depleted battery. I don't think you'll get what you need from a usb charging mode at this point. It could take some time to revive if you've push the battery far enough to deep discharge becasue the initial period will be used to recondition the battery at very low current.
...has been on the wall charger for hours - no effect
Can you plug it into the PC and see if it detects anything at all and if it does what is that. The other possibility is that you've somehow ended up in download mode.
I ended up in download mode on my original incredible. Not fun. See if it boots if you plug it into the pc. If so, I know how to fix it.
Sent from my HTC Flyer
nothing detected when plugged in via usb onto my pc
tried also adb shell, sais no connected device
think its really dead...
i have a flagship store in town, bring it in tomorrow -keep you posted, what the problem was/is
Let Lee know too if you haven't already just in case there is something in the code causing problems. That way he can pull it to keep other people safe.

[Q] HELP! Atrix does not power on!

Ok so I was at work listening to music when my phone froze. Pulled the battery, which was only at about 85%, and tried to restart. And, nothing. No green light, no dual core screen. Tried four different chargers, including OEM Motorola charger, and tried hooking up to my home PC. Only thing that happens is when I hook up to the PC without the battery in the green light comes on. Power button still doesn't turn the phone on. Just turns off the light. I tried to search, but the closest I found was people stuck at the dual core screen or people who didn't realise their batteries were dead. If it helps, I'm unlocked, rooted, and running GingerMod 2.3.6. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
Sam issue
I am having the same issue with my wife's phone. We both have Atrixes and I have tried swapping batteries and her battery works fine in my phone. I still can't get it to start up. No green light when plugged into the charger but a solid green when plugged into usb on my PC. How did you end up solving your issue?
I got this problem once. To fix, pull battery out, plug in wall charger to phone (without battery), should boot to the battery with question mark icon, plug battery back in.
I work at a cell phone repair store , and from reading your symptoms I think you might have an issue with the flex cable running your LCD. In the atrix if you drop it there is a possibility of shaking the flex cable off your board, and its a matter of micro soldering or just connecting the cable. I DO NOT suggest doing it yourself. If you want it done professionally call my work. 6053350411

I solved this problem with wall charger
Will anyone here elaborate how to fix it again?
If I plug it in wall charger, no response and no light.
If I plug it in USB, green lights on without battery, no light with battery.
In any case, pressing the power button cannot power on the device.
Please help. Thanks.
Sounds to me like your battery is having issues. Maybe try getting a new battery?
Thanks for your quick reply. I have actually got a new battery already. Still the same behaviour.
Then I can only assume it's the phone. Perhaps the charging circuit. In any case, sorry but I have nothing to recommend. :dunno:
If the plugging it into the wall without a battery in it didnt work... then try waiting for the phone to boot (assuming that it still is and the LCD is disconnected) and swipe where the unlock button normally is, pressing volume up or down, or perhaps try ghosting to adb and run adb devices in the command line... or simply try calling it lol. Also a good piece of information to get... does the backlight come on? If you can prove that the phone is in fact running, then it is most likely the lcd cable as someone said...

Thanks for your advice. I didn't drop the phone before it went to "no-response" status. I just put it on a HD dock for charging and the next day it doesn't boot anymore. I have put in HD dock for charging for a few weeks already.
My phone doesn't boot at all. I don't see any backlight or any special response. Or It does something that I don't know. I tried to plug into USB after pressed the button. If it's on, the computer should detect a device, right?
Any ideas are welcomed, i will try all.

[Q] Brand New Streak - No Response (?)

Last night I bought a brand new Streak 5 from a local guy. Box was sealed, no mention of refurb, inner contents were sealed.
I didn't have time to test it and the guy I bought it from said he had gotten it a while back from a work raffle and that it had been sitting in a drawer in his house - I have no reason not to trust that he was lying to me.
When I actually got time to unbox it, I popped the battery in and tried to turn it on. The menu buttons lit up briefly and then when out. The screen never came on. Since then, it has been completely unresponsive.
I've tried to charge it with the wall charger, as well as my PC. Neither seem to be doing anything and my PC doesn't recognize it - even with Dell's software installed.
I've tried to take out the battery and hook it up to the wall charger and my PC to get it to turn on.
I've removed the Micro SD.
There is no SIM card in it currently.
I ordered another battery and an external battery charger. They should be here in a few days. I have the current battery rigged up and charging with a spliced USB cord.
What else can I do? I feel like I've done everything "simple" thus far and I'm a little nervous when it comes to utilities like Streakflash.
I'm coming over from the iPhone world and my Android use has been limited at best. Any help is appreciated.
What happens on the device itself after having had a chance to charge?
Does it light up when you press the power button, or nothing at all?
Thanks for the response.
There is no indication that it's charging. The screen doesn't come on, or even flash. The buttons do not light up. However, I don't believe it's the cable or the connector since my PC responds with an unrecognized device -- "Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM" prompt. I also managed to get my PC to tell me that the device "wasn't plugged in."
I've tried to get some response out of it in every possible combination regarding the buttons, battery, back cover, microSD, and where it's plugged in. It just sits there. No lit screen, no lit menu buttons, nothing.
If it helps, I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. I've installed every possible thing I could find regarding the Dell drivers and my OS.
It sounds like your device somehow got shipped without having all the software installed onto it.
Can you provide more information about the device itself, such as it's manufacture date or any other info on the box/device labels? Devices getting shipped half baked like that isnt exactly common.
This sounds like a legitamate time to use QDL tool to reflash it, but I cant provide any help with that as I've never used it.
Can you use QDLTool if your computer doesn't even recognize it?
The date on the label is 10/12/2010.
If it's displaying as "Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM" that's a sign that it should be able to get into upload mode as that's what the driver qdl tool uses I believe.
It's likely out of warrentee already, so you prob have to fix it on your own if at all.
I can't get it to respond to anything I do. It's very disheartening. I really, really wanted this phone, too.
I'm downloading the latest version of Ubuntu. I'm going to see if I can make any headway through Linux.
I can't get QDLTool to pick-up the device, either. I get an error message when I try to use it and scanning for it does nothing.
Did you install the driver bundled with it properly?
If it still doesnt detect it after that it's likely a dud
use qdltool, you can download it from here
http://www.box.com/s/rj9xd5tl7v5amimbm3youll need to make sure you have all drivers installed though, info is on this forum somewhere,
once installed run the software on pc you should see a big box with "run" on it, click run then connect phone by holding volume up and connecting usb then qdltool will do rest from there
when i got my both my dell streak it was the same deal. first one came exactly as how you described it. I put in the battery, made SURE THAT THE CONNECTORS ARE lined up on the back case, and then tried to power it on. NOTHING.
It seems even if the battery was fully charged, the only real way to turn it on was to connect the streak to the power adapter and then press hold down the on button. WHen the device finally gave me the dell logo, it would just sit there stuck. So i took out the battery, and redid it. Then went into fastboot mode (hold camera and power) and it wouldnt detect the touch screen. It seems that the touch scree was faulty and hence it would remain stuck on the dell logo. I tried to calibrate the touch screen a few times, all failed. Then finally for one time it worked, and the touch screen came back to life. Shortly after though upon booting into the old stage 1.6, it restarted and the touch screen failed again.
So i sent it back to rogers and they gave me a replacement phone. Same deal, when you first put in the battery and the case it wouldnt start no matter what. Only upon plugging it into the power adapter then it starts up. However this new one had a functional touch screen.
1) check out the touch screen by using the fastboot, or stock recovery. If you get error messages, it means your screen is toast most likely and then you might have to open her up and see if all the connections are lined up
2) if it doesnt boot at all, try connecting it to the power adapter first and then after about 30 seconds power it on. You should be able to see the dell logo unless as the guys stated before the software is hosed.
3) if the software is totally hosed, tried to get it into fastboot mode or recovery and see if you can reflash the device.
something like that...
Thanks for the comments, guys.
As of now, it's still in the same position it was in. It doesn't respond to any combinations of buttons, battery in/or, or plugged into the wall/pc.
I'm assuming that the situation it's in currently is what's preventing any sort of legitimate connection between the phone and my PC.
My last shot is a battery and external charger that should be here next week.

[Q] Weird Charging Issue

Hello,
I have Galaxy S2 and having some charging issue. Yesterday, when I plugged it in the wall charger, it didn't get charged (i.e. even the flash on battery was not coming up) and when I tried to restart the phone, it powered off but didn't switch on. I tried holding the power button to turn it on but it didn't. So, I pulled out the battery and left the cell for some time like 20 mins or so. After re-inserting the battery, it turned on but still was not getting charged. I tried to change the USB cable as well but nothing helped. I then tried to charge it via my Laptop it actually started the charging process but with error on Laptop saying "USB Device not recognized".
Today, I tried the wall charger again and here's I found something: when my phone is ON and I plug it in the wall charger it doesn't charge but as soon as I turn the phone OFF, my phone starts getting charged (Battery image comes on screen which usually comes when the phone is off). So, that's how I am charging my phone.
I went to the repair shop today, he said it's a charging port issue on which I have some doubts that why it is even charging in this way if it's a port issue. I just want to make sure if whatever he's saying can be somewhat true.
Can you please help me out? I would be really thankful to you.
I look forward to hearing from you soon!
Thank you!
PS: I tried to search about the port issues but I couldn't find anyone having this kind of issue so please!
The issues you have mentioned really do all point to a faulty USB board......it is common (with a faulty board) for some functionality to work while other functionality is lost. The part itself costs pocket change and is reasonably easy to DIY replace......
If you want to go down that path, check my profile for threads I've started.....you'll find a guide explaining exactly how to do it.
Just make sure to read and note the section on 'rev versions' it is VERY important to get the correct one......
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right

[Q] Z2 died yesterday (out of the blue) - newbie here, any advice appreciated!

Hello,
I have an unrooted Z2. With around 30% battery left, I put it in the charging dock on my desktop yesterday evening. After 1 or 2 hours, I noticed that the phone is completely dead - no LEDs are blinking, no vibration, nothing. I tried pressing the power button alone, in combination with VolumeDown, VolumeUp, CameraButton, for more than 30 seconds each. I tried pressing down the tiny red button next to the SIM slot for awhile. Nothing. Phone is dead like a brick.
The only result I'm getting is when I plug it into my computer (ubuntu 14.10) - the LED bar on top is showing a constant red color in this case. Doing the button presses outlined above in this situation is also pointless.
I'm installing flashtool for Linux right now, the connection is pretty slow and it will take awhile. I hope to find out more afterwards. I'm a newbie when it comes to flashing sony phones, only found out now about flashtool. Any advice/tip on how to proceed, or if it even makes sense to dig into this, is highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Hello,
are you perfectly sure your dock was connected properly and it hasn't discharged your phone? Maybe there was something wrong with it.
I had similar situation while I was low on battery and I was creating backup in recovery. Then I fell asleep and I have found my phone completely 'dead'. I connected it to the wall charger and nothing. No led, no nothing. I have even connected it to my pc and also nothing happened. Then I connected my Z2 to the wall charger and I left it like that. And after few hours, out of the blue, just turned itself on, just like my old Nokia n95.
I'm sorry it's not quite solution you looked for, but give it a try. Essential is to charge it via wall charger.
Good luck!
Do what @amon87 says OP. Charge it on a wall charger for a minimum of 3-4 hours; If that doesn't work, can you specify whether you were using a legitimate Sony dock or a third party dock? If it was third party, it could possibly have caused a hardware problem with your device via the magnetic charge pins (not extremely likely but not unheard of). Worst case scenario, send it back to Sony in the next few days. The warranty will cover it if you haven't caused water damage or anything like that.
Thanks for your replies! I also hoped for a sudden discharge, so I removed the device from the dock, plugged the USB in directly, and left it overnight - still nothing. Also, I have the original Sony dock, and have never exposed the device to any water.
Found out the model number in the meantime, it's D5303, if it's of any help. Flashtool does not see the device, unfortunately. I just found out that Sony describes an option to restore your device through the official PC companion app - I'll give that a try when I'm home, and will report back tomorrow.
Otherwise I guess my only option is the warranty.
There's also an option to quickly plug in and out charging wire to kick-start the battery. Unfortunatelly i have no further ideas to help you out.
Don't give your hopes up, try again. There's been a thread of a guy whose Z2 turned itself off and it seemed dead, but after a day or two it just turned on.
So, of course it's also not detected by Sony's "Bridge for Mac" app. Plugging it in and out brought also no results.
As the device is still covered by warranty, and I have yet not tampered with it, I've sent it in for repair! My pocket feels so empty now, i wonder how life is going to be without a phone. Apparently they need 5 - 10 working days.
Thanks for your kind support, guys!
Sorry to hear that. Hope it will get fixed!
