Advantages of CM10
-Actively be part of the development community by sharing results with the devs JCScullins & Dorreguay who work hard in porting
-Google Now works perfectly
For one, CM10 is much more buggy. It's also very choppy, considering its running 'Project Butter'. Transitions between windows and apps isn't nearly as smooth as the CM9 build. Overall, CM9 is a much better experience on the HP Touchpad, and if you are not willing to put up with the hindrances of CM10, stick to CM9 until a stable-ler alpha release of CM10 hits XDA. In my opinion, Ice Cream Sandwich is better then Jelly Bean. I feel like Jelly Bean is going in the reverse direction, and Google is not thinking about the approach, "Why fix something' that ain't broke".
An example, when opening a link in an email, you get the option on which application/browser to open the link in. In ICS, you can click the app in the list that pops up, and boom! you're there. In JB, you have to click the app, and then click again to open the app. One might say, why don't you select "Always" such that you never see that prompt... well... my reason is the next point:
I like choosing! I like being able to open a link in Firefox over Chrome if the webpage im going to happens to work better in one over the other. Also, flash is the worst possible experience you can have in CM10 for the Touchpad. Browsers all handle embedded videos differently, and you will find yourself fighting with your tablet to get a simple video running, even if it's an embedded YouTube. It sometimes isn't straight forward to launch the video in the native YouTube application.
Well, if you guys have any questions for me, feel free to ask, as I have two Touchpads (gf uses the CM9 one), and have been using CM9 and CM10 consecutively. I wish to thank all devs in making the Android on the Touchpad a challenging and fun experience! If you only have a Touchpad as your main reason for coming to XDA, be thankful, as some devices aren't as clear cut as the community here in the Touchpad section. (The Wildfire S device I have is a complete nightmare)

Edit: With jelly bean 4.2.2 (CM10.1), Google seemed to fix the above-mentioned gripe with choosing the appropriate app to open the item. CM10.1 is fantastic, and certainly worth the upgrade. Most 10.1 ROMs work fine, minus the fact that Bluetooth does not work at all. If you rely on Bluetooth connections with your Touchpad, wait until this issue is fixed, before diving into 4.2.2.
I've been using CM9 as my daily driver for a while now. I've tried CM10 ROMs but always end up going back to CM9 as it just seems more stable. I don't really see any reasons for me to upgrade to JB at the moment. I appreciate the work devs are doing to port CM10 to the Touchpad.

Cm10 battery is fantastic. Ill post CM9 tomorrow. however not entirely sure why my wifi randomly turned on while the screen was off.

I've had both the Targus case and an iPad 1 case just like you, and always seem to come back to the official HP case. I like how slim it is compared to the others.
BTW, Nice work comparing ICS and JB.
Flash support in ICS means I always come back to it, not having it in JB really is a downside. I've been wondering what features JB really offers as an advantage over ICS other than maybe a bit more of a polished look. Anyone?

You can get Flash on JB through the Adobe site link below, though I'm curious what you need it for, don't have it on my phone and have never needed it for anything.

My wife likes to watch video recipes on marthastewart.com, (lol) which as you can guess still requires flash. The performance in CM10 is so poor that it is nearly impossible to get to the video after all the advertisements. Leaves me wondering why it works 100% on my phone, with the same chip set.

Yes, flash is horrible on CM10. The flash area flickers (was going to say flashes, but that would sound wierd lol), and there are heavy graphical artifacts and bugs that tend to show stretching and skewing of the screen.
When HMTL5 takes over several flash videos, the experience isn't any better. For your wife, I would suggest backing up your apps with Titanium Backup, and then flashing CM9. My gf's touchpad uses CM9, and she hates using mine due to the issues with flash.
CM9 battery life. Not many stats due to the battery profile not running on CM9. Here, standby of 13 hours and slight usage caused a 15% battery drop, which is not bad at all.

i got 4265 on my cm10 touchpad, not overclocked.
I have the jscullins's cm10 rom. It seems pretty stable. Chrome does not function very well but I just use another browser. I just like the layout with cm10 better.
I am running Schizoid's CM10 AIO and it's running pretty well, some applications have issues, but apparently recent updates have fixed them. Probably means I should update soon. Either way it's starting to feel like it's getting closer to a daily driver.

(now for a opinion/statement... don't take this as a negative, the progress being made is great and all the Devs are doing one heck of a job)
ICS is the new hotness and everyone wants it... but it seems that getting it running properly is probably going to take a lot of work and time. (Tbolt still has no data for example)
That is why I am hopping for a GB port. (CM7 for example) In theory, it should be much easier to port that over than ICS right?
We can have some GB AOSP goodness to hold us over until all the kernel problems and other issues with ICS are worked out.
Now if we can get the major bits working on ICS then this is moot. As long as data, wifi, and the phone works, I can handle a few bugs and a few random reboots.
(Once again not trying to be negative or knock down the achievements being made these last few days. I have been following the threads every chance I get.)
So a question to you guys out there... what do you think?
Both are going to take a large amount of time to achieve. Seeing as we have maybe 1 AOSP GB kernel, and I'm not even sure if that works. Also the whole issue with CM7 was the RIL thanks to LTE and that took awhile for the Tbolt to iron out. Also our phone is likely to get an offical release for ICS sooner than the tbolt, and probably will be easier to adapt. Who knows it could take less time and effort this time around to get a functioning RIL. But in my eyes why would they want to dump time into CM7 especially when theres the chance for pure AOSP ICS/Sense ICS on our devices? It's not like our phones don't run great w/ the sense roms at the moment. Only thing irritating me are the bootlops w/ the kernels. Not sure if thats voltage or software stability.. Honestly at this point it would be more wise to put focus onto ICS development. With ALL the improvements that ICS offers would be foolish to stick on GB.
From what I just read in another kernel, data would be an issue regardless.

ICS is definitely the way to go.
Data is the usual issue when dealing with these kinds of ports. I'm not sure if anyone is working on a GB AOSP rom, or even if theyre bothering to port CM7. From what I've hard the RIL can be a real pain in the ass.
Figured that sort of thing would be made robust to make it easier to get on many different devices.
You'd think so but software fragmentation is a monster in it's own. But hopefully with ICS we will truly have a unified platform this time around.
Right now they are doing what they can. The real magic will happen after we get the ics update and the ics kernel source.

I dont know about everyone else, but my phone is running just fine on GB, GingerSense to be exact (and ran fine stock). I think at this point ICS is more of a fanboy thing. All these people want to hop on the bandwagon because it's the newest thing, without even proof it's really going to make the Android experience that much better. I don't know, maybe I'm missing something?
There is proof, it is called the Galaxy Nexus.
ICS will be worth the wait just to get the second core in our dual-core phones running.

It acts more like an overflow core. Honeycomb and ICS are optimized for dual core.
Just like root came, this will come too, in time. I can wait for now.

There is nothing special about the Nexus, per se, but ICS brings further hardware acceleration and dual-core optimization. The Rezound runs rock-solid on GB, but it will be unbelievable on ICS.
Beyond that, I like the re-sizeable and scrollable widgets that are stock-ICS, which brings a great feature to people who use launchers without that ability. And ICS has some really slick widget-updates to YouTube and Gallery, among others. Not to mention finally getting an Email and Gmail widget, although they failed in not having a universal widget for all messages.
How about the fact that ics actually has a design identity and looks decent. Sense gingerbread is horrible.

This will be my first tablet, excluding a few windows 95 wacom ones and one MID tabled that i threw out my window.
I need a ROM with WiFi working out of the box, er uh out of the flash.
Personally, if you want the most stable, I'd go with the CM9 Alpha2. It doesn't have a cam or mic, but then again, nothing Android has them.
Other than that, it's really simple. All you'll need is to read the thread at http://rootzwiki.com/topic/18843-releasealpha2-cyanogenmod-9-touchpad/ and follow the instructions - everything is there. Download the files it requests, put them on your touchpad's media folder from WebOS in a folder called "cminstall", then reboot into flash mode (power and vol-up when rebooting), and run the commands it says.
It's super-easy, takes about 5-10 mins, and you're golden. Downloading the ROM will be the slowest part of it.

There are more than a few roms available to the TP's, I use the unofficial cyanogenmod nightlies. Some have more problems than others. Many have wifi issues, but I've never had any.
Go to the unofficial cyanogenmod thread, the directions there are very good and simple and easy to follow. As for the cwm, do the same. The instructions are also easy to follow, a lot easier than if I wrote them.....
If you need a rock solid rom with no issues, you're better off using WebOS. Remember, all the android stuff is Alpha. I use webos about 50% of the time. It's a great os, and has much, much better battery life.

It's completely up to you if you want to use that or not. I used the 1.2 myself back when I wasn't on the nightlies. I am going to try the 1.4 on my tablet once it finishes it's encryption and see where I go from there.

update at the start allows the ACMEInstaller script to use it (all files that it uses require that designation at the start). The fullofbugs part just reminds you that it is an alpha build, and that there will most likely be bugs in it. It is just their way of letting you know this is nowhere near a Final level release.

I was in the same position as you exactly one week ago. I'm very very happy with my touchpad. I'm running oat's light and tasty rom with supreme mod 1.4, supercharged, and chainfired. Running excellent.

Personally, I run the latest nightly from Eyeballer's thread. And flashing it is the same as flashing Alpha 2, only you put that update instead of the one called alpha2. And you flash it from the command line using the ACMEInstaller2 script.

Seconded. The CM9 Nightlies may be better at some point, but since they change every day, it is a bit of pot luck.
Apps are your choice, but I am generally rather disappointed with the tiny number of tablet optimised apps. They are usually marked HD, and often cost (more). Of course phone apps run fine, but they do not really use a tablet to the full potential, and are sometimes a bit clunky to use.

Actually CM7 has working cam and mic, just not CM9.

Though I am having one problem. When I switch to portrait mode the icons and Widgets shift to the left. Can this be fixed by changing my dpi? And what should I be using? 120 or 160

If you're on 160, that's because of the way that the orientation works it. It puts an extra row on the side when you switch to portrait. Not quite sure why.
However, the latest nightly builds (I noticed it as of 20120402) allow you to set your number of columns / rows on your homescreen (when in landscape - when it goes portrait, it does the same thing).
Don't know how well it looks at 120, but at 160 it isn't too annoying. Especially since my tablet almost never goes portrait, unless I'm reading. I'll let someone more experienced answer this one.
Oh no. I think I broke it already! Went to install the 1.4 mod pack from my Roman manager app and it shut down and now shows this... restart button does nothing... help!?

Installed the official CM9 two nights ago and I really can't find anything more than nitpicking at this point. Sure the home screen transition is still not quite as smooth as my wife's iPhone 4, but it is smooth enough and all the apps/games I have tried are fast enough, battery life is also incredible as I got over 4 hours screen time on wifi for my first full charge.
I have compared my device against Galaxy S3 and HTC One X, and there is no question the performance difference at this point is not worth the extra screen size to me. It is really amazing what a cohesive (no touchwiz dialer + ICS task manager mesh mash, CM9 is completely refined!) and bloat free experience CM9 is. Even the official ICS ROM after de-bloating still has too many Samsung applications for my taste.
More importantly, mobile phone applications are not desktop programs, you are not going to run Photoshop or Visual Studio on your Galaxy Note, you are not likely to play Crisis. I really believe dual core for mobile phone is very very similar to core 2 duo on desktops, that once you reach a certain level of performance, you just don't need any more upgrades. My wife and I both have 5 year old core 2 duo's and with a very modest Nvidia 9600 GT, I can still play most if not all of the mainstream games. Sure I can't play them at highest graphic details, but I can still enjoy Skyrim or Diablo 3.
I think the exact scenario is happening to mobile devices. All the top apps/games have to cater to the lowest common denominator, unless you are super hardcore, you will be satisfied. In the past people had to upgrade for performance, but I don't think it is the case anymore. I will wait out the full two year contract and pick up Note 2 when it is on sale for a discount, unless there is a hardware failure. And I think manufacturers will also see the same problem, that it will be harder and harder to get existing users to upgrade.

Ya, cm has always been nice. They usually have that extra bit of polish and professionalism. Aokp is decent too.
As far as buying new devices, there will always be people wanting to upgrade to the latest and greatest even if what they have is still completely adequate. Being an EE technology major, I'm one of those people who will buy new stuff just because I love technology. And Moore's law says it will keep getting better lol. If I can ever get a fng job, I'll definitely buy the note 2 if its awesome enough.
Everyone has computers, but most people never upgrade them to keep up with the times, they wait til they've crippled it after a few years then buy a new one. I've gotten so many nice computers that were "broken" from people, only to open them up, clean them out, reinstall whatever os I need and have it be perfectly fine for years. Usually just a fan or seating issue with some hardware.

Upgraded last night after a clean wipe. I like it save for I cannot uninstall ROM manager, and I can't run soft keys. Other than that you couldn't pay me to keep it. I'll be moving to the iPhone 5 and the Note 2 as fast as I can. I absolutely despise the old style hard keys. They are a crime against humanity and must be removed in the Note 2. Full screen or death!!

I installed h0tw1r3's CM9 based ROM (here) and it is really beautiful.
I wanted to add that I completely agree with OP. This is my first Android phone, and I knew the power of custom ROM's in the past from using Windows Mobile 5/6. I tried several that were all pretty nice, but coming across the CM9 ROM, I feel like it really lives up to the hype. Gorgeous, polished, fast as hell!

I am always amazed at how CM9 has the extra little touches that make a phone really work optimally like wake on volume, put screen to sleep[in notification pull down], included toggles, etc. For some reason unknown to me other ROM developers never include most of these but IMHO they make the Note really useful.
So why is there nothing on their website if this is official? Not a final release?
Also, does the cm team run on donations just like must devs?

I think CM9 is not ready for prime time on the note. Checking the use internal SD in the storage setting forces it into a boot loop. Definely will have to wait until fixed. This is for the 7-16 nightly.
I love cm9 too.. Very fast and smooth no lag only had one little bump so far.. I run cm9 on my note and my galaxy tab 2
I would love to use cm9 but im an avid user of bell mobile tv. If there is a way to get both, please point me in the right direction.

Just delete the rom manager app inside the zip before flash and there you go, no more ROM manager.. are you kidding?! why waste perfect screen real estate for emulated keys? Sure the screen could go all the way to the bottom without any hard keys but unless they create a screen with a built in speaker there will always be a space at the top of the phone for that and they balanced the look of the phone by centering the screen AND including keys so that 100% of the LCD is usable. Go get in line with the sheep for that iPhone and sell your note to someone more appreciative of a fully customizable phone

I have been looking through the forum trying out a few At&t Galaxy Note ROMs but i haven't tried an AOSP or CM9 ROM and I was wondering if anyone could show me the best one for the At&t Galaxy Note(battery life, customization, stability, everything working, MUST have a GREAT equalizer, and being lag free.):fingers-crossed:
really the bet one is what works for you - each of us have different standards and things we look for in a ROM - best bet is to try it yourself - takes less than 5 minutes to try out a ROM - start in the development thread
I've used Flapjaxx, Perfection and am now currently running AOCP - all worked great for me - some pluses and minuses on each one
but i could see using any of these as my daily driver

I can only say what i recommend as my daily driver is fj's stock by att carrier with h0tw1r3's oc kernel r2.. It is awesome fast. I tried aosp, cm9, hybrid, paranoid, but after all that i missed having spen. I don't use the pen much but when i do its at pretty crucial times. Im going to flash cm9 official right now to try it out but most likely won't keep it. So i advise try few roms for yourself.

I have tried several CM9, AOSP, AOKP and Stock based ROMS. All of them have their merits and I give props to all the Devs who worked hard to make them.
But after trying at least one of each, my personal fav is JamieD's Paranoid Android ROM.
Great on battery, very very stable hybrid tablet interface.
Each ROM provides a different experience for everybody that uses it. The only way to find a "best ROM" is to try them all for yourself and see what is best for you. Anything that anybody tells you otherwise is wrong, as it is a matter of opinion.

Solid words, i've personally poked around on FJ's line of stock roms, team perfection's objection, seraphim-mesosphere-remix, and official cm9, until i switched to cm9, i had always been switching back to fj's roms because of s-pen gestures, but i switched to the official cm9 nightlies and have been making due, all it takes is some back-up apps (if you have data to back up, things like titanium backup and mybackup or your preference [merely said those, because i use them]) and mess around, play with your phone, always good to have a full charge before you flash but not imperitive, and always remember when you switch between roms, make sure you wipe with double ply :3
Personally loving fjs latest build but i really liked the hotwires build and cm9 have the nfc tagging for themes... I didn't get to test it out but that stuff is pretty cool. Just my opinion.

I've been running Dagr8s King Kang and I will sing praises about that rom. I can't stand any stock based Rom, although I do wish I could use all the nice spen apps.

Official CM9 nightly has been the most stable for me so far, and it's very fast. The only thing I can complain about is home screen swiping lags a bit, and when long-pressing a home screen icon to move or delete it, if you have a lot of icons on the screen, this lags a LOT. Does not happen with different launchers. So far every launcher I have tried has something I don't like about it. The silkiest smoothest launcher I've used is sslauncher in The Collective's CP1 ROM. That whole ROM is very buttery smooth and I love its different style. I was very tempted to go back to that ROM from CM9, but so far CM9 has proven more reliable for me. This could just be ME though, as I've only been playing around with this for a couple days. A week ago, I was totally clueless about how to root a phone, how to use Odin/download mode/recovery, or even what any of that meant!
I think when we see these guys stress WIPE WIPE WIPE, it really does matter. I've taken the habit of wiping anything and everything I can, multiple times, before trying a new ROM. This has given me best results so far. I just keep my important stuff backed up on my computer, and I reinstall my apps manually. Not really a big deal, since I often find when reinstalling them, there are a bunch I had installed that I don't really want anymore anyway.
So, what is the BEST?
- If you want the stock ICS experience -> you can find 100% stock ROMs floating around for various carriers.
- If you want the stock experience but don't want the bloat -> XDA has delivered on this front too, there are a few variations of stock ICS with bloat removed, and a few simple really helpful things installed but no heavy customization.
- If you want the highest performance and customization -> The Collective - AoCP - CP1, CM9, Paranoid Android
Just compare the download size of the stock ROMs to the download size of the faster ones and you'll see!
I'm still a noob at this, so everything I said could be totally wack.

I got my HP touchpad very early but I've only used it a handful number of times because WebOS doesn't offer what I want. I haven't had the time to get around to dual booting it. I'm now looking to breathe some new life into her.
Which would be the best/most stable experience? ICS (4.0+) would be nice
Have look in the development section there are several different roms and the first page will tell you what they offer the rest will offer users comments form where you should be able to make an informed decision.

I use the cm9 official nightlies, IMO, the best and most stable ROM right now.
The battery life in android can't compare to WebOs. If webos had more / better apps, I would use it all the time. As it is, I use it about 50% of the time.
you could do far worse than "[ROM] UNOFFICIAL CM9 with working camera"
i semi watched for a working cam.. then this rom got everything working..
thats when it spoke to me..
it is totally stable, no gotchas.. seems like batt life is fine..
until this rom wife used webos on it, but that was very limited..
she like this rom so much she bought an N7 loaded w/ JB and i use the hptp.
point being,, use this rom for a complete daily driver..
if you do so, keep in mind that all the devs work for free. if you like their work, they deserve some type of donation..

Agreed ^ though I hardly ever boot into WebOS these days, CM9 is about as good as you can get.
Cm9, with pro rom manager, and spb shell you'll love it.

I bought SPB Shell and stopped using it in no time. The tablet mode UI is good and the eye candy is great for about 2 seconds showing off to your mates but after that you just feel you've wasted the large cash outlay - and SPB haven't updated it (apart from minor bug fixes) in over a year. For software that costly I expect some decent support and enhancements. TSF is a better choice if you want something a bit different!

I'd stick with one of the CM9 ROM's. I've tried CM10 up to the most recent preview on my second touchpad and it's not as fully functional, smooth and stable as the CM9 builds. You really can't go wrong with CM9 Nightly builds but I've come to prefer Fat'N Creamy at the moment. I get better battery life, no random reboots and it's a tad bit faster. I do use Juice Defender and also use Set CPU to set up custom profiles to extend battery life and get a little extra boost when gaming though.

I got my TP last week to use as an aid to my profession (network engineer)
I needed flash for router configs
I ran a CM9 nightly for one night before discovering Fat'N Creamy.
SGA has it together, great Dev, in all honesty my TP is more stable on his ROM than webos itself
I had a palm pre a few years back so I knew the downsides to webos, but the HPTP hardware is everything a tablet needs to succeed
My tablet is flawless, so I highly recommend Fat'N Creamy
I'm on Fat n Creamy which is based off CM9 but seems more stable in my opinion. Its basically the same procedure to flash any ROM. Since flashing Fat n Creamy and also enabling lock screen sounds, I've been getting no reboots. Apparently the lock sound (or any sound after boot up) helps prevent the sound driver from crashing the system which causes reboots.
i was on cm9 nightlies since the beginning and there had been not issues there. Recently swapped over to Fat n Creamy as i like flashing. All has been running great and smooth.
Can't really go wrong with any ROM as all Dev has done a great job.

I'd suggest the AOKP CM10 rom. Working camera and basically everything else. Ive been using it for a day now so not a great amount of experience but it's very smooth.
