Torrent Client slpws down phone! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using a high end phone (samsung galaxy s3) clocked to 1600mhz and using siyah kernel. No matter what governor i set the phone to (even if it's only max freq), it WILL lag if i'm downloading thru torrent client. Not immediatly, but after say one hour. I have to stop the downloads/close the app to make my phone lag free.
My client is ttorrent (pro and lite have same prpblem), but i've experienced the same result with other clients (adownloader).
What the hell is the problem? I DO NOT get any lag when doing an html direct download, then why do i get any when using torrent clients? Even if one might say: your phone is frequently dumping cache onto the filesystem cuz torrent clients first make the file then they dump data on it, THEN i would answer: this happens if i download onto my phone, as well as on my CLASS 10 32gb microsd card. Also i have downloaded content from the web thru html direct with a download accelerator that made the file first, then dumped data on disk. I believe that this lag issue happening on a high end device is just insane!!! My phone is practically dead if i dont set governor to performance while downloading!
Any help? Anybody having the same issue?
EDIT: it might have something to do with the fact that after an hour or so of video streaming from the web the player (android stock) gets REALLY laggy?(along with the phone)

One hour? You should be happy m8.
This happens to me after 2 minutes. I need to restart te whole phone.
I tries EVERY torrent app available.
I gave up on torrents a long time ago with this phone.

Never had this problem with my s2.
It has been a downgrade in all areas except for the 720p screen and raw processing power.

That's too bad.
The s3 is a great device, it just needs some tweaking to be perfect.
Maybe it has something to do with the siyah kernel?

If the download speed is high, usually over 2-2,5 MB/s, it's normal, since the torrent client cannot write (flush) the data to the flash drive so fast. This happens on any computer. For example, this also happens on my computer, since I only have a 7200 RPM HDD and I download with 8.5 MB/s. This wouldn't be a problem if I had a high speed-write/read SSD, for example. Of course, if I allocate more RAM to the torrent client, it won't lag for a while, until the rest of the allocated RAM is filled.
So, this happens only when download speeds exceed the writing speed of the storage device. In our case, the flash drive.

lol why aren't your torrent files finished after 1 hour?
your sgs2' max download speed is as fast as the sgs3, which is why s2 didn't have any problems writing smaller ammounts of data at a time. look at your s2's dl speeds, then use your torrent to cap your speed to what your s2's is. that'll give you a true comparative. your memory card speed doesn't effect phones internal disk speed, which is where your system is.
personally, my s2 best torrent speed was 1.2mbps. my s3 can break 3, so even if the process can handle it, the internal memory can barely keep up, which shows everywhere else on your phone.
I don't think samsung bumped up the grade of internal storage coming from s2 to s3, just made it bigger.
does your torrent offer the option to save directly to external SD card? the torrents still run thru system unfortunately, but it will be less work on your internal that way.

Why in the first place you torrent with a phone?? =//

R: Torrent Client slpws down phone!
I'm going to answer all of you cuz since im a new member i only get to post once evry 5 mins-.-
Anyways:
We are not using sata disks, but flash drives. Solid state memory disks. They're VERY fast at copying. And my sdcard to which i usually download (but i have expierenced lag even if downloading onto phone memory) is class 10 (30mb read, more than 3 copy).
Also i live in italy, one of the continents with lowest download/upload speeds (can't imagine why), plus i live in an extra-urban area, so i get even slpwer speeds. 350kbps is the top of my download speed (sometimes 400). So download-copying problems are not the case, 100%.
Also the reason i download to my phone is because it makes it easier to have movies on the go always with me (i download only legal movies off the web
Also my streaming player lags when streaming, it's gotta have to be something conerning the samsung phone. Anybody on htc experience this?

[Q] Hardware acceleration, USB transfer speeds?

Just bought the TF201 and I'm absolutely in love, after reading some of the horror stories, I was cautiously optimistic to take the plunge, but I have a C1 model with ZERO lightbleed, great Wi-Fi, GPS is faster than on my Nexus S indoors, and my bluetooth headphones work great without touching the wifi.
That being said, I have a couple of questions:
1. Since Twitter and Facebook apps don't run all that smoothly, (I'm attributing this to their lack of optimization for tablets) I went into the developer options to check off the option for "force GPU rendering" which really helped, it's buttery smooth now, but the warning said that it could slow down my tablet, yadda, yadda, will this option pose any kind of problem? It hasn't thus far on my Nexus S which is running the latest version of Cyber-GRMOD but I don't know if it makes a difference what with this being a tablet.
2. Am I the only one who gets RIDICULOUSLY slow transfer speeds on this thing? I mean accepting defeat that I can't sync all my songs (about 15 gb) from iTunes onto the tablet, I synced about 300 songs through WMP which took about an hour, whereas it takes about ten minutes to transfer that many onto my phone.
Sorry if this doesn't fall into the rules or regulations, but I figured if it's q&a and 98% of these forums are filled with Wifi and gps Issues, I'd turn here to ask.
Glad you got an issue free prime.
1. Force GPU Rendering shouldn't pose any problem for newer apps, but some old apps may randomly crash and not work as expected. If you don't see any issues with the apps you are using, than it should be ok to keep it turned on. You will experience a faster battery drain and higher memory usage though.
Also note that, all newer apps and games use GPU rendering by default regardless of this setting, so once developers release the newer versions of their app you wont need to set this option in the settings. This will be desirable, as turning it off will give you longer battery and less memory usage.
2. The USB connection is quite fast, if you are having slower connections try setting the ASUS PC Sync off (Settings > Account & Sync). Also make sure you are using a USB 2.0 port in your computer and dont have any antivirus or other software scanning the Prime.

Nope. It's generally considered to be the fault of MTP.
You can try Samba Fileserving and transfer files over Wifi. That might be faster. Another solution, which I haven't tried yet, might be Android Commander.
I've been using Swiftp on my prime with filezilla on my laptop. Seems to be more reliable and faster. I have a mac and Android file transfer kinda sucks.

since you own the game: you should find the required files on your internal sd card under the "/sdcard/android/data/(whatever the nova dir name is)". just copy the whole dir tree over and that should do it
Didn't you or someone else create exactly the same topic a few days back?
If your laptop has Wifi network, you can use the free program 'Connectity' to create a real Wifi AP network from your computer to which your phone can connect. It will then be able to use your computer's internet connection to download the game data.
However hocgwai's recommendation is better in terms of speed and data usage since you already seem to have it installed on another phone.

We're on the same GPU architecture than S2, true. However it's clock speed has been ramped up to twice S2's speed, bringing it in synthetic benchmarks (so real-world differences may vary) in front of the Tegra3 as the most powerful mobile phone GPU/CPU combination.
The amount of GPU cores doesn't say a lot about it's performance and how apps can actually use it.

Depends on which platform the game has been optimized for. Nvidia really aggressively pushs their Tegra platform while Samsung let's app developers take their own decision.
This -at least in the near term- results in THD having a better graphic than Mali which doesn't mean the S3 could not handle it. A nice proof is the Chainfire3D app which enables S2/S3 devices to run Tegra2 (optimized) games at full resolution or even fore a higher antialias.

[Request] Kernel Dev's - Low memory issue

Hi!
Because of the low memory issue in the International edition, I request for all Kernel Dev's that implement the possibility of the use of Swap file.
There are programs that make and use this Swap file to get more free RAM, but this programs needs that the Kernel support it.
Like :

What do you think?
Cheers!
P.D:sorry for my bad english.
I think you are in the wrong section. There is a dedicated section for questions and not in the Development thread
What Low memory issue??? We have 1GB of RAM (almost) on the device! Everything works smooth on the phone!
maybe he wanna say that free memories are from 2xx~3xx mb only, which is actually less than S2 even S3 also has 1GB ram.
If the files can increase more free ram, it would be good for some heavy games and softwares to run more smoothly.
Wrong forum, but indeed I agree.
It's virtually impossible to run 2 heavy programs at once. One of them will always close when it's in the background, even if it implements a Service.
For example, Waze - It closes whenever I receive a phone call.
Just annoying. Problems I never had on S II

Swap will make the phone lag terribly since the ssd writing/reading speeds are far inferior to what you neel for normal operations.
It also makes sure the internal/external storage will not live very long.
While it's a good idea to combat memory issues, paging to disk is not suitable for normal situations.

Swap file to internal SD: max speed 26MB/s I think there is not a problem, but I prefer more memory. And I tell that implement the function and optional you can enable it, if you don't want you don't need to enable.
Cheers!
Can I ask you why you think you have low memory?
please select one of the following:
1) Phone going so slow it takes age to do anything I ask
2) Apps keep getting killed mid-use
3) I have looked at the numbers and they look low....
I can't choose any option. I want to explain:
-I open Internet Browser and open a Web with many videos, photos, etc, and browser closes itself.
-Open 1 game (NOVA3 for example), then put it on background to see a Web Page or check email... or open the Web browser, open 3 Webs then go to email to check, then go again to browser and all is closed, the phone needs to open all Webs again (in this case is your first option).
I think that you prefer a UNIX computer with 256MB of RAM than a UNIX computer with 16GB of RAM because you optimize the 256MB of RAM. I prefer waste memory (really don't waste it) because I want to RUN many programs at the same time.
Sorry for my very bad english, because I can't explain exactly what I want.
I'm SYSADMIN and I know what I say.
Cheers.
I understand where your coming from but I think you have failed to understand the purpose of multi-tasking on a phone (and the reason that not many phones have more than 1gb of ram yet).
Multi-tasking on a phone is designed to let you go from webpage to sms, or music to email etc, i.e. between smaller, less hungry apps.
Switching between a high ram usage game and other things is always going to be a problem, the phone was never designed to allow you to multi-task while gaming.
I know that this is a phone, not a Core I7 - 16GB RAM - SSD with Windows 7 Ultimate, but, Did you have a SGS2? with SGS2 you can make what you want and you don't have this problems off memory.
I said an example of a Web page with a lot of videos and photos that make Browser closed., not only with Games.
This is Why I want to try the Swap file. Off course if the phone goes slow down I'll prefer no Swap file, but I think that is a good idea.
Perhaps with a new firmware update Samsung solve this issue...
Cheers!

Have you ever had your Windows computer have to heavily page to disk (aka swap)? Even with my OCZ Vertex4 it's unbearable.
Just get rid of all the background apps (such as AllShare) that the S3 has running and you should be better off, it got rid of any hint of memory underrun I my had.
Get Houmiak TaskManager from market, find out which apps are running and freeze them in Titanium Backup. Problem solved

You are wrong.
This is my 4th Android phone.
Multitasking between several Applications which implement the Service Android Class should be possible without any of the services being killed.
I don't care about the Activity. I care about the service.
Example :
I run Torque & Waze at the same time and tend to skip between them.
If I receive an incoming call, they are both killed because of low memory.
How do I know? when I go back to either of them, the state is not kept, and waze even complains about not being stopped correctly.
Believe me I removed ANY resident useless services, uninstall about 30 system apps from wanam lite using titanium pro, and still, no good.
These things used to work on older phones like SGSII and Galaxy Note and even SGS I with stock samsung roms.
There is no reason SGS III should suffer regression in this department.
It is very easy to understand that while samsung have added plenty of "Cool" features to the phone, they have left us with an overwhelming amount of garbage. I want smart stay, I want usb OTG, I want the camera app, I want Touchwiz dialer and I want HDMI,
But not at the expense of basic use-cases.
Hell, on the Galaxy Note I was sometimes shocked at the amount of Activities left in the ram, I was impressed. Having 10 apps running in task manager. And no, I never closed them. I don't used task killers, and I don't care about "Free" ram.
I care about my Applications life cycle which sadly sucks on SGS III.
BTW, Galaxy Note had the same screen resolution give or take as the SGS III.
Something is terribly under optimized.
600MB used just by core crap.
PS. I am angry at samsung, not at you, apologies if I sound harsh.
It's also aggravating when posters here instantly assume other posters only care about Free ram. HERE - TAKE MY FREE RAM.
About the swap to sdcard, I'm not sure that is the solution.
But I am sure we need "A" solution.
Edit:
If anyone knows how I can understand exactly which process/app/apk/activiy/service is taking how much, I would happily compare it to Galaxy Note. I'm sure we will find basic applications taking too much.
If it's the GPU reserving too much memory, I am willing to settle for less GPU ram while not running games. Hell, the Galaxy Note was not that slower then SGS III
It even preserved me a lot of time which I now waste on Navigating multiple times with waze when it is closed because of a phone call.
Don't know if this has anything to with it as I haven't received my S3 yet. With the HTCOneX I had this problem as well. Then I found out, that in the
"settings".
in the "development section"
"Don't keep activities" which is unticked by default. One has to tick it ( I went on recent apps to make sure it would be saved) and then untick it again. Afterwards the HTC1X was quite cabable of multitasking. The default setting seems to have some hybrid impact and has to be set straight by hand.
Hopefully this helps your issue.

I'm completely with you on this.. .. I have had both the original galaxy, the s 2 the note and other Android phones with this one being my first where larger apps are closing due to low memory resources. I had Nova, my browser, videos, music, angry birds and other processes in the background on my s2 with only388megs used out of 863.... this phone, I load the browser and everything in the background closes with 675megs used out of 754.... not cool. There must be some kinda solution.. why is it that my note and s 2 have 140 more free ram anyways?

MicroSD to and from computer takes forever/freezes. UMS?

I am running a 4.7ghz pc with 8 gb ram and when I copy files from my phone to computer, two things happen:
1)It is dog @ss slow, takes like 3 hours (my Evo took like 10 minutes)
2)It freezes up the computer constantly (unusable), and then when it is
finished copying, the computer remains out of memory or 98% used of 8 GB!
So there definately is a bug in the Galaxy SIII copying from Windows 7.
I know they made a retarded move to not let you mount it like a USB drive,
so it takes FOREVER, and transfering files as if they were media or camera is
just so slow and stupid. I hope they come out with a fix for this, I know there
is an app from you guys in beta Easy UMS, but I have beta 2, installed busybox, etc., and my computer still can't see the drive with UMS mode.

4.7 GHz! Are you sure? Because that's like 50% overclock which is more or less the limit of feasability with perfect hardware and excellent cooling solutions. However neither Host clock speed nor RAM (if above 2GB) will really matter. Especially since Clock-speed by itself is completely worthless.
Are you by any chance copying movies or audio? MTP will convert the contents for optimal (LMAO!) resolution on your device, so it will not only take long but eat up all your system ressources.
There are multiple solutions for not using MTP, including AirDroid, Samba Filesharing, ...
Easy UMS requires 2 things: a compatible kernel (it needs the s3c-gadget module) such as Siyah or Stock and root.
Also make sure you're on the international i9300 and not the US-version since it only works with i930X due to the US-version lacking that particular feature.
I am on USA stock rooted clockwork. So I guess it won't work for me.
I hope someone figures a way to get UMS working for us, MTC is just
so slow, I am not copying movies, but A LOT of little files which really
freezes things up. It is just stupid that there is no option to just use
it like a flash drive, like the HTC or every other phone, it is WAY faster.
P.S. Yes,I built my own computer. 4.7ghz 2500k with corsair H50 cooler
completely stable for 1 year at 1.3v. Not really that hard to do.

IIRC, cached process is for background apps that are still in memory simply because there is enough memory to do so. If the device is short of memory, these cached processes will be cleared.
Does the memory issue cause you actual problems?

The poster above is correct in what he said, the only time to worry about it is if it causes a device slowdown. If you're worried about it you can always go to the recent page and clear it out.

I love you. You have convinced me this issue is not a hardware defect or something (I dont know how rogue memory leaks would be a hardware defect but w/e). You also saved me from additional anger by factory resetting my tablet only to find the issue still persisting.
Gosh, I love this tablet so much despite its flaws, I really want to keep it. My last (5) nexus 10s would randomly reboot multiple times a day from the freaking system ui having a memory leak, and it took a year for Google to fix it with 4.3.
Anyway, turning off Javascript helps immensely. Still, after a few days, the browser is taking up over 200mb of ram, but it is a far cry from the 400mb in 2 hours that usually happens.
Anyone have any idea?

, do you Know if 4.2.2 will fix this when it's released? Sorry for double post.

As far as I've read on other forums here and other sites..... No! Latest upgrade to 4.3 on galaxy nexus has, if anything, made it worse...I tried it on a Gnex and can confirm that to be the case

Well that's just dandy. Honestly thinking about getting an ipad right now . Sure, ios is a bit more boring, but it at least works. Nexus 10 was plagued by a memory leak, and it was 8 months before Google for anything. Now I can't properly browse or use bluetooth, as that affects Internet.
