Let's hope for a de-odexed version if it turns out to be any better

As long as I8190XXAMB3_I8190XXAMB3 isn't released for your region kies won't find any updates anyway, or am I wrong?

I took enox.co's sec_csc_XXAMBA3-for-cwm.zip from here and added multi csc.
At least it worked for me. Changed csc from KOR to NEE using "CSC Select".
sec_csc_multi_XXAMBA3-for-cwm.zip
Containing csc: ATO, BGL, BTU, CMF, COA, CYO, CYV, ERO, ETL, EUR, MSR, NEE, ONE, ORX, PHE, SEB, SEE, SIM, SIO, SMO, TEB, TMT, TOP, TPH, TRA, TSR, TWO, VDR, VIM, XEH, XEO.
Flash in cwm to add csc's, then change region code with csc select. (factory reset is needed)

I have a phone that I bought from the US and now using it in Egypt and just received update to XXAMA3. The question is what is the difference between AMA3 and AMB3 and would it be ok to use it XXAMB3 on my phone ?

Umm , judging by what I'm seeing , I suppose you only ran the "Check for updates" thingy in the Settings ? It only checks if there are any updates available, you have to do the actual updating via PC with an application called Kies. Get it from Samsung official website and follow instructions to get the updates, if any.
Edit : ... or by using Kies Air, but that's something else.

If you only want the stock kernel then you will need to give us the original firmware you have on your phone.
unable to locate stock rom
I have recently purchased an sgs2 (actually came to my senses and swapped it for a blackberry) and have been scouring the forum for information on how to restore the rom to stock so I have a base to start from. I am new to Android so excuse my ignorance on this. If I do a *#1234# I get the following:
PDA: I9100XXKI3
PHONE: I9100XXKI3
CSC: I910OXAKI3
Build Info: Thu Sep 15 13:53:07 KST 2011
I am based in South Africa and can use the phone as normal but it does currently seem to be a bit unstable and the Market Place crashes fairly regularly on the phone. My carrier is Vodacom South Africa and from research the ROM I have on the phone is a generic for Europe (not sure if this is relevant).
In Kies, there is a message that says updates cannot be done using KIES.
I have tried download the stock ROM from the links on the forum but multiupload.com seems to be down or has very high congestion.
HELP PLEASE!!!

The real question I have is which is the correct ROM to download? There is such a lot of information that I am totally confused now.
On all the posts I've seen so far the one to download for South Africa could be many different versions. What is the relevance of this information?
XWKI4
Firmware info
PDA:XWKI4
PHONE: XXKI1
Date: 14/09/2011
Android 2.3.4
What information do I use to determine the correct version of file to download. I am completely confused by the mass of information available, especially considering my phone is currently running what I assume to be XXKI3 which is non south african.
Could it be that my phone was originally purchased in Europe? If thisd is so should I be installing a version of ROM for that region or will any region do?
Bazilla said:

What firmware was on the phone originally or what firmware do you want .

Who knows ???
CSC: I910OXAKI3 but that reads as Polish CSC from memory .
Its normal to download the firmware for the location the phone is being used in .
Its also usual to download the latest version .
Its the CSC that gives local network details and the baseband /modem that may be changed if poor reception .
XILA2
Android 2.3.6
This package has: PDA: XILA2| Modem/phone: XXKL1| CSC: XEUKH2
Latest posted for the UK .
I would flash that enter network settings if needed manually .
CSC or modem can be changed later .
Note multiupload is closed down for good you will need a Google search or Sammobile .com for firmware .

What? Your links just redirect to this thread. Please make sure to post the correct ones. Or is my browser bugged or something
Stock firmware in the stock rom thread you looked ??
or via CHECKFUS .
or via Sammobile.com
or via GOOGLE search .
HOLD up you will not get stock ICS with a GB baseband .You can alwzys flash the modem yourself if GB modems work on ICS .
Or are you confused regarding what baseband is ???
jje
JJEgan, checkfus cannot find me any firmware...product code displays "not activated"
Sammobile has nothing for my carrier, only for other carriers in my country...but I guess those would not work for my phone would they?
Indeed I might be confused about what baseband is, I edited the title of this thread in consequence.
Thanks ZACQ8, but I understand well I need to find the firmware file before I can flash it with CWM...my carrier hasn't made ICS available , so I don't how to do?

Difference between XXALF2 and XXALEF?

Hello,
I'm still new with S3.
I saw many of the custom ROMs are XXALF2, my build number ends with XXALEF. Is there any difference?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
XXALF2 is newer, UK release.
Other differences are difficult to confirm objectively, Samsung never release changelogs.

It' s possible to know which are differences between alef/alf2 and ale8?
All you can do is read the web and the xda forums and some of that is guesswork .
Change logs are not published .

I'm new with Samsung devices, so bare with me with my noob questions.
1. The different basebands are for the languages or the system?
I'm from Malaysia with the baseband of DXLE9. Build XXALEF.
Can I flash with different baseband & build? Or the baseband have to be the same?
2. How about rooting?
Should I follow the baseband & build versions or straight away root?

You can but as above baseband is not the firmware .
2. How about rooting?

Again baseband is not what you want .

PDA refers to the build version of the software/firmware
Phone refers to the baseband/modem version

[Q] Which rom can I use to root my GTi9300?

Hello,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 GTi9300 and would like to root it (don't we all)
I just looked up the Baseband and Build number and found that it is using a Brazilian ROM, most odd since I bought this as sim free and unlocked from Amazon UK
The Baseband version is I9300UBELL1
The Kernel version is 3.31-789635

The Build number is
JZO54K.I9300UBEMA1
My question is can I use a BTU rooted rom GT-I9300-BTU-I9300XXEMC2 to replace the Brazilian one I have?
Will this work on my phone or do I have to download and install the rooted brazilian version of this rom?
Cheers
Basically all ROM out there is universal to galaxy s III unless the DEVer says it otherwise.
Just be careful with all those variants as American / Canadian S3, S3 international, S3 LTE. etc.
But in this case we are talking about International version which is GT-i9300
And actually, root it means put su binary and superuser control apps into system, it is not ROM related.

it's better if you just root your device

As long as the ROM is for the I9300/I9300T version of the SIII and you got an I9300/I9300T you can flash them, independent from which country they are. The only thing you might want to look at, if the ROM comes with a baseband from another country, is to maybe flash a baseband of your region (in case reception gets worse).
Read the FAQ for guides on how to flash, root, unroot etc.
And what is your point.? If your phone is working properly you dont have to care where your rom is.
Elsewhere to root you have guides on xda. And root has nothing to do directly with your problem you can flash à stock rom And modem with odin.

Thanks for clearing that up
The phone works fine I was just concerned that OTA updates would be for Brazil and not UK so figured I would put correct version of rom on my phone, I already downloaded I9300XXEMC2_BTU_i9300 from sam mobile.
Still find it odd tham Amazon.co.uk are selling the phones with non UK rom but it seems this doesn't matter
Thanks for help anyway, I am going to investigate other options mentioned in this post :fingers-crossed:

I wasn't sure if updates etc would work properly on OTA as I have a Brazilian rom
I had an S1 before this and only had phone a few days, my S1 was flashed with a custom rom, but baseband was always the same.
I want to root this so I can get native emocions by dropping the fonts in the relevant directory and also so I have a wider choice of what I want to run in the future regarding custom roms

Thanks for this reply, it tells me everything I was unsure about :victory:
The baseband is to do with csc?
Am I able to backup my curent rom and settings in unrooted form?

Just forget about CSC, it doesn't matter.
Yes, you can backup your current ROM and data via recovery

OTA updates the firmware you have if its Brazil then thats the update BTU then that's the update .
OTA will not update on rooted phones use Kies instead .

Baseband and CSC are two different things, don't worry about the CSC too much as said earlier, you only need to if you want OTA updates when unrooted . Baseband = modem.

Usually all basebands are compatible with every rom (as long as you choose the correct android version). Hence just try and see if you reception is ok, otherwise flash a different one, there is a thread on the general section for that.
