[Q] Just got the GT-19300 and performance is not what I expected. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Just got the phone the other day.
Some guy got it as free upgrade on billpay with vodafone but decided to keep his current phone and sell this on so I got it for a great deal.
I unlocked it and changed network and everything is fine EXCEPT.
It's running really slowly for some things, especially dialer, contacts and messages.
It's on 4.1.2 by the way.
I tried resetting to factory, wiping caches, reinstalling update through Kies, resetting to factory, wiping caches again.
Nothing helps.
Seems like a lot of other folks are experiencing this crap since JB switchover from ICS.
Is there any fix for this apart from rooting and installing custom ROM?
Didn't think I'd have to go the the hassle of doing this with such an expensive phone. At times it feels like my old Vodafone 858 smart
Seriously, it can take 4-5 seconds to open contacts, dialer or messages.
Once you open them they open fast after that, until they are released from ram again.
If Samsung are aware of this and are planning an update I will hold out for that, but otherwise, root + modded ROM I reckon, as this feels like a budget phone, not an S3.
This is really crap as I was all excited to finally have a nice , quick , responsive smart phone after well over a year on my old 858 smart.
A little underwhelmed to say the least.
I tried all the fixes like animations to 0.5x and turning off location data etc.. but no difference.
The hardware seems to be fine as it got 15700 I think it was in An tu tu, and everything registered as it should. Seems like hopelessly unoptomised software to me.
Any tips, fixes or suggestions form anyone would be welcomed.
Thanks,
Mark.

All of us have to deal with this crap. Try using a not-Samsung dialer, messenger, etc.

Tried contacts+ and was still not as responsive as I would have hoped.
I actually like the samsung default functions if they worked faster.
Is there any rom that keeps the default look and functions but is a lot better optomised and has better memory management?
I might go that route if there was such a thing?
Don't want to use a rom that would loose functions the phone has, just something more streamlined and a lot quicker.
Don't know anything about roms so any suggestions would be welcomed.
Do you reckon this might actually be officially fixed in a future update? Is there enough people complaining about these issues to raise a flag with samsung?
Feared it was a faulty phone, but after reading lots of similar reports I am at least glad that it appears to be software not hardware.

Just pick any stock based ROM. My recommendation is in a PM, because I don't want to start a flame war.
I don't know about future updates, but I don't think that they give a damn about what the community thinks/wants. (the community asked for documentation of the processor and they gave us nothing aside from stuff they had to release cuz law)

Thanks but I like the look of the default one.
Just rooted and installed Wanam lite and it's definitely a lot snappier. Still the problem with the dialer, contacts and message app being dropped from memory after not being used for a while.
Is there a way to edit files to lock the dialer, contacts and message apps to memory permanently?
That would solve the problem.
Cheers,
Mark.

Keeping the contacts and dialer in memory is one of my favorite features of JKay's Mod. I'd highly recommend that you check it out and can't say enough good about the Deluxe settings application itself (paid app on the Play store) because it allows you to fully customize the stock look and feel to your liking.

Can I use jkays mod over the rom I just installed? or is it a separate rom?
If it will work with my rom can you give me a link to the latest version please?

Not sure which version you installed, but you'll find all the supported versions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1807819
It's by far my favorite all-around mod for the SIII, and I have been a fan of it since owning the SII, which is now my wife's phone.

I checked I installed GT-I9300_WanamLite.XXEMB5.V6.2.NO-WIPE .zip
I checked version number with *#1234# and it's 19300xxemb5 so I downloaded XXEMB5_JKay_Deluxe_Stock_v14_92_9.zip , is this correct?
EDIT:
Did the above steps and works fine. Installed the Deluxe settings too from google play.
Man the difference now is something else.
Thanks guys for all your help, phone is brilliant now.

Its a bit of work but ASOP is very nice as well, you should do a nadroid backup and have a quick look at CM10.1
Since the new mali drivers, its been very good and super fast on all screens.

Will keep this in mind in case I have any issues in the future, but for now it's running great.

After a day of using the Wanam lite rom I am happy enough but would like to see if I could get better performance.
Even with this Rom and the JK framework and settings app I still get the occasional bit of lag, especially when using the dialer, and contacts.
Even though with the whitelist checked in JK it seems that the dialer and contacts still get kicked out of ram after a while.
Am interested in finding the smoothest, fastest rom that has instant response with dialer and contacts and also has the latest features.
I don't want to loose any features the phone had by default either.
There are so many roms available and they all claim to be super smooth and fast, so it's hard to know which to use.
I don't want to spend a whole week installing rom after rom.
Would appreciate some feedback from you guys that have tried them all as to which is the smoothest, and is there any that has instant response with dialer and contacts. Hopefully a rom that performance doesn't degrade the longer the phone is running either.
Am I asking for too much or is there such a Rom?
Cheers,
Mark.

[Q] LOW performance on Galaxy S3!

Hi,
Is anyone else experiencing this, or does anyone have a solution?
For some reason i'm not expereincing the full thrust of performance the Galaxy S3 has to offer.
The home screens 'jolt' when moving left to right, but the more annoying thing is that widgets (like the weather etc) KEEP disappearing and reloading (doesnt take long to reload, fine, but still! Galaxy S2 didnt do this!)
This was all noticiable in the 'TouchWiz' Launcher, so i thought i would try another launcher... Nope, same thing!! Apex, Launcher Pro, GO Launcher etc..
Also, some apps crash, more than the occasional crash you would experience on the S2.
It also freezes up on my for about 10 seconds before reloading the widgets/icons...
I've gone down SO many routes. Its definetly not that theres too much running, because i find myself closing apps through task manager ALL the time, more than i should need to ...But even with NO apps running, same thing
I just dont get, does anyone have a solution or could shed some light on WHY this is happening? I've hit a brick wall for trying to stop this and am hoping that its not just a 'dodgy device'!
Thank you to whoever responds...
Def sounds like a dud there. Try going into Apex launcher and tick the setting to keep the launcher in ram. Ive heard loads of problems about TW reloading itself after running things like the web browser and gaming :/
Dude just flash custom rom....or latest stock rom.

Shouldn't NEED to be flashing anything, mine was sheer awesome out of the box.
All I've done was flash the insecure kernel... which is the same just adb etc. enabled, and rooted.

Networks do not matter with custom ROMs, as long as you are flashing a ROM for the right phone i.e. the international version, and not the north american version. (which you don't need to worry about yet because it's not out yet)
Check if you have Power Saving turned off. It throttles the CPU making scrolling etc noticeably slower.
Mine loads the weather widget coming out of S-Voice. But other than that never misses a beat. Smooth even when using 90% of its ram.
Did a test of its speed and its above the Asus prime easy, so sounds like you have an issue.

Man same thing here - only been 4 days since i bought my gs3 and i'm having issues.. i was running a benchmark when i saw cpu it said 1000MHz and max cycles 1400MHz i think we got a gs3 without exynos system - like they did with galaxy s2 had the i9100G model. Of tjis is the case and i find out i'm gonna spend any ounce of energy i have getting it replaced. The worst thibg is the browser cant handle videos on youtube. Performance is pathetic and weirdest tthibg i didnt have flipboard pre loaded on my gs3. Even now im on my gs3 and the browser wont let me fix "thing" that i wrote in the previous sentence. Totally shud have gotten htc one x
you all can flash latest version which should help with launcher redraw ... and after that do a full hard reset: *2767*3855#

Not having any issues. Suggest you uninstall apps and track down what's causing you pain or take it back. There is nothing wrong with this phone. If you are having slow performance obviously a quad core phone may I suggest an iphone.
Yeah I'm being a prick but common sense and a bit of troubleshooting will teach you a life skill.

The thing is that a big company that is trying to resemble other competitors cant release a product that will act that way and call it their flag ship.... Most of the owners wont twik it. the phone its a big draw back for me and disappointment... Really miss my s2 some times. Its one thing to pile new features wether they work or not and make the product worse than its predecessor. Big big disappointment. Happy with the screen, battery and looks though will wait for a proper Rom or Google clean products that are to come.

Your S2 has had a years worth of development and optimization. I bet you'll say the same about your S3 when we're all using the S4.
I completely agree with the guy. My most common activity on my phone is browsing whilst listening to music, and this phone just can't hack it. Waaaay too regular cut outs, I'm pissed off.
Remove all bloatware and corresponding background services, get a good kernel (Franco r5 is great), you'll find phone is much better, in a few months, it will have moved on loads and will be so much better

Yall are the odd ones out then. my phone was actually VERY VERY good at multi tasking out of the box. i could surf the web, play my music, and watch a movie with super video....and never get redraws, or hickups, leave apps open and keep going......i could not get it to do any lagging unless you speaking of the micro stutter in home screens. which is gone now with a custom rom and a few misc things here and there.
yall seem to keep wanting to blame it on the phone.....i dont quite understand this.

The below is a method brunes came up with:
brunes_007 said:
Having bought one of these from China, and having very little to noting written on this device so far, I had to figure a bunch of this out myself... so I thought I should share my findings with the community.
If you order one of these from China, you will find that it does not have the Google apps and utilities on it. So to get them on, first you will have to root it.
The first method I tried was via the recovery mode, which I determined you access by holding volume up + power until it reboots into it. However, you will find unfortunately that the recovery mode on this device is locked and it will only flash signed updates, so that method is out.
I tried a bunch more methods and exploits until I finally found one that worked - that was this Root_with_restore method on XDA. Follow the instructions in this thread and you will have rooted your device.
Now that my device was rooted, the next problem was how to install the Google apps. I downloaded the latest ICS apps from goo.im - but remember, you can not flash these. I tried installing ROM manager from the market and using that to flash CWM recovery, but that didn't work. What DID work, and what I ended up doing, was simply unzipping the gapps.zip onto my MIcro SD card, then (as root on the phone), copying the entire contents of the "system" folder from that SD card over the /system directory on the phone. After I did this, and rebooted, I now had all of the Google apps working!
I was able to add my account and install all needed apps from the market to make this phone really shine.
My next goal is to figure out how to get CWM working on this phone. I am doing a bunch of reading on the topic and might have something to report later this week.

Hi Guys,
Can anyone please point me in the right direction on steps to root and install the Google applications (Play Store, Google Contact Sync, etc.) on my Huawei U9510e (Ascend D1 Quad XL)?
I just had a family friend bring me one over from China today and obviously it didn't come with any of the Google applications. I was able to find the Gmail apk online along with the GoogleLoginService and the GoogleServicesFramework apk. Everything installed fine, but I am still unable to sync contacts over from Gmail, and occasionally I will get an error saying that GoogleServicesFramework has crashed.
Any insight pointing me to the right direction is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

And for sure, I think as soon as this phone receives a global launch it will be pretty popular too, seeing how it's probably the only quadcore pentaband umts phone available on the market right now

No problem, I'll do the translation and post it up by tonight
But just remember that it's still built on a beta rom release from EMUI so it may be unstable, even though I haven't experienced anything (ie. the phone auto restarting), I can't guarantee for you guys :S
Amazing phone for the price
I just got mine 2 hours ago. My friends are all HTC fanboy so they told me to stay away from Huawei but I was just thinking to try it out and then return it but I think i am gonna keep it and sell my GNex. It is quite an amazing pone for such a little price. although the phone might look bit thick but the thickest part of GNex is actually slightly thicker than the D1. I just wish there are more dev support.
I find the camera app that came with it really annoying since you cant turn the sound off... also if it had 2Gb of ram this would be the perfect phone for me!
Anyways anyone else have any news on update to 4.1.2? Or is there other site/ forum with more support?

Beta is fine. Flashed my previous Samsung Captivate numerous times (various Cyanogenmod releases), until settling at SlimBean. Android = always a work in progress.
Regarding the D1, anyone notice slight choppiness when scrolling through the app drawer and such? I'm using Holo Launcher (which I used on the Captivate).
I find that changing the power saving setting to High Performance seems to have mitigated this somewhat. I suspect it might be a small issue with how the stock governor is handling transitions in CPU speed.

For sure about 2GB ram, and support is coming, supposedly Huawei will fully unlock the bootloader by late next week.
I get all my information from bbs dot anzhi dot com, it's a Chinese forum and that is where I found all of my information from. You'll probably have to wait a while longer for the office update to Jelly Bean from Huawei's EmotionUI, but I will be posting the guide on how to flash into their beta release later tonight.

Haha that's true.
I noticed it when I just open the app drawer, I'm using Holo Launcher HD, and it'll be smooth out after opening it for a second or so. I haven't noticed this problem when I was using the ADW or stock Launcher though, so the probably poor ram management from Holo.

Testing Apex Launcher (my go-to launcher before) now. Seems smoother!
I Tested with NOVA launcher PRIME and I say the transition is pretty fast but not smooth. (tested it on performance mode) But i gotta say the 3D unlock screen works perfectly smooth. Do you guys think it might be the problem with 4.0.4 ICS and not the device? My GNex runs on 4.1.2 + some performance tweak and it looks fine.

Double post, need to accumulate a couple more posts so I can start posting links, but I have started to draft the instructions
I'm not sure, because the 3D Home was laggy to me compared to the 2D Home, and I didn't try NOVA, so I couldn't comment, but isn't it similar to APEX and ADW? If it is, then it should be pretty snappy :S
Edit: Tutorial is up!
Indeed it is snappy but not as buttery smooth as 4.1 I feel.
Here is a good review androidauthority
Thanks for your tutorial!
Hey I'm just wondering if anyone got a case for this phone and can you please give a short review of it. I m looking for a case that replace the back cover but wraps around to the front. I had a case like that for my atrix 4G back. I just don't want to make it any chunkier. But if you think it feels fine then I might consider putting on a case. Thanks

You're welcome! I definitely think that project butter had alot to do with the smoothness

I'm using this case right now. I love the feeling of the back, it's really similar to the original backing of the phone's battery cover, and it's not too bulky. I'll get a couple of pictures of it tonight so you can get a sense how much wider it is compared to holding the phone without a case
Newbie Hiere
Hi Sir/s,
I recently bought a Huawei U9510e phone from China and i came upon your posts re the "rooting".
I already rooted my phone (thanks a lot to you!), but now my problem is how to install the google play.
I saw one update from Huawei but it is in ZIP file. Here are my questions:
1. How will i install the update to my phone? Do i need to download it from a PC first then install it in the phone or do i need to download in directly to the phone?
2. How to deal with those ZIP files and where to save them to make them work? For example, the attachment "huawei_usb.zip". I downloaded it but i didn't know whats next after that. How can i integrate it in my phone? Or if its a driver, how can i integrate it with my PC?
Kindly help by providing step by step procedures re my question since im still new at these things.
I apologize for the stupid questions but i don't really have any idea about those. Hope you can help me.
Thanks,
Androidneophyte

AT&T Stock JB 4.1.2 - Slow, lagging, pros and cons

Moving back from a CM 10.1 based rom to stock once the new JB update was released by At&t, I knew there would be a slight sacrifice in speed when going back to the TouchWiz UI. I was willing to take that small hit to get the s-pen and other stuff back. I have noticed a few things about this update and I am on the fence as far as whether or not to stick with it or go back to a CM 10.1 based or other ROM:
Pros:
* The Nature UI on TouchWiz is pretty. The slight drop shadows under app icons and some widgets is nice.
* I like the S-Pen stuff, though to be honest, I don't use it all that often.
* The sound quality seems to be improved on this update. Not sure why, but everything sounds better - music, calls, notifications.
* This stock ROM seems to handle the screen colors better. There is less of that annoying AMOLED color banding effect that drives me nuts on most other ROMs (I am a web and graphics designer, so these aesthetic things bother me).
* Signal Quality - It seems the signal is stronger and I do like knowing the difference between a regular 4g and an LTE signal. It seems the modem firmware is also better (which I installed along with this update) and quicker at locking on to a data connection.
Cons:
* TouchWiz UI is really quite out of date when you consider all the advancements Google has made to Android since version 4.1 as far as grouping of icons, project butter etc. It seems that not much has improved overall on Samsung's TouchWiz since the previous update.
* My phone really lags as far as overall performance. Some of this is most likely due to TouchWiz, but opening apps, going to task manager and other processes is painfully slow and annoying. Forget trying to open the camera app in a pinch when you want to shoot a candid. By the time the camera is ready to shoot, the moment is gone.
* The leds under the menu buttons are not used for notifications - It seems silly to me that Samsung or At&t would not take advantage of this functionality that most third party ROMs do. If my phone is in a separate room on vibrate or mute and I receive a text or call, I will not know this until I actually pick up the phone and turn on the display. That is silly.
* Battery Life - sucks period. This seems worse with the update.
I guess what I am trying to do here is find a reason to stick with this update and perhaps make improvements based on others opinions here. I think the most important issue would be improving the speed/responsiveness of the system overall.
I have been following some of the other offerings available as far as third party ROMs based off the official Samsung/AT&T 4.1.2 version. Padawan is one such ROM which had quite a bit of attention in the forum.
There are some solutions which others have reported which make noticeable speed improvements in general:
* Deodexing - I think this is possible on a rooted device with a stock ROM, but most just install a ROM which is already deodexed. I wonder how much improvement in performance is noted after this is done.
* Debloating - Removing unnecessary apps that the carrier has decided to include to increase value to the customer. I am not sure what improvement in performance this really offers as to affect performance negatively, these apps would need to be running in the background all the time, right?
* Go with a vanilla generic Android ROM which does not have the TouchWiz UI over it, such as something CM based. As nice as the speed improvements are in doing that, I still would love to keep my s-pen sensitivity and features on the odd occasions when I do use the s-pen.
Anyhow, enough of my long winded post. I am just really curious as to what others think.

Thanks for your response. It was already rooted, running TWRP. As far as debloating, so would I use Titanium Backup to freeze or remove the at&t specific apps? Also which At&T bloatware causes the most issues in terms of performance lag? There may actually be one or two of those apps whose hit on performance is outweighed by their usefulness...

Well, then that's totally subjective. What I usually do is I freeze such apps. If you do really need them, you'll miss them. Then that's the indication you should unfreeze them.
I'm amazed at how hit-and-miss people's reviews of stock 4.1.2 are. I'm running true stock - in that I'm using the odin package - and it's the fastest, and by far the most stable, JB ROM I've ever used on my Note -- and I've run the gauntlet with them. I simply used ES File Explorer to delete everything that at all looked like something from AT&T, and then I went into my running applications/services, and anything that I did not use, or thought I didn't use, I went into Titanium and froze. Now I'm always at ~300mb of free RAM and my battery rivals anything I've experienced -- even a drastically underclocked and volted ICS kernel.
I did, however, accidentally delete my calculator in the process. I get a little aggressive with my cleaning of things. On the bright side, I found a CM calculator port on the market which is prettier and gets the job done.
I am running a stock rooted Rogers JB 4.1.2. It is by far faster, smoother, and better battery than the ICS counterpart. If I turned off Location services the battery would even be better.
I believe the problems most are experiencing is from dirty flashing. Format that USB storage and wipe the data before installing the ROM. I know from experience. I installed using odin without wiping or formatting anything. Yes I kept all my apps and info but what I was left with was a laggy and battery hungry phone.
I understand that the Quadrant test doesn't mirror real life but on my phone I constantly achieve higher test scores with stock 4.1.2 than with cm 10.1 or cm10.0.
Not saying I like it better or worse but I don't think speed is that bad on stock 4.1.2

I've been searching for a while, but obviously not good enough.
I've never rooted an Android phone and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to root my AT&T JB updated i717 and replace it with the stock Android JB. I've had numerous problems with the stock AT&T JB (mainly Talkback launches on it's own, Wifi doesn't connect, Battery life sucks).
Thanks, in advance for any help and sorry for being a relative Newbie and asking what is an obvious question to most of you.

I suggest to do a full wipe data and cache. But be sure to backup your personal files as they Will be deleted. Try looking at how root videos on youtube to get an idea how to root. Heres one for an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zpi8yCYJOt8&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Thank you !!! I've been watching a lot of them, but they don't seems to be exactly right. I really appreciate the feedback and help !!!
The thing I don't like about using any other ROMs, is that the "Auto Screen Tone Adjust" setting is not in any of them, and the screen automatically dims on white backgrounds and I don't like that. Is there a way to fix that or add the setting in another ROM?

i'm still on tw and unrooted, works perfectly fine for me unless if i'm hogging up resources
I haven't removed one piece of bloat and still on the stock rom (yesterday installed a custom kernel, but it was actually faster before that. i did it for battery life) and it's still running faster than ever. You might have a defective one.
No problems here, all bloat installed. Actually I have 752 apps installed.
I've used many different kernels and roms, stock and custom.
Only time there is any lag is when the apps are auto updating.
Try disabling any auto update, i.e. play store and Samsung apps.
Either set a schedule or do it manually.
Hope that helps, and I made the jump from s3 to the s5 as well.
T-Mobile Galaxy S5
I would honestly try going back to pure stock and see if you get the same results.
It could be the ROM you're using may have an issue, going back to pure stock can help rule that out.
Alternatively, getting a logcat and seeing if there's a ton of error messages may also do the trick.

I'm on stock rom and rooted. No lag whatsoever. Your running a custom rom and complaining about lag?? There's your issue right there. Most people completely stock don't even have your lag complaints.

Walk that iPhone 5S into the nearest Apple store and ask them to reimage your phone to one without iOS 8 beta....
If you are looking at a replacement, the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S5 with the latest updates is a very solid performing and non-laggy device.
My S5 works great and is:
1. A stock device with no root or customized ROM.
2. Loaded down with a lot of applications and widgets, but I've tested them over the years on an S3 or Nexus so I have a good idea of what is CPU heavy or battery heavy.
3. On the latest firmware (at least until 5PM PST when the VoLTE update is pushed) G900TUVU1ANE6.
4. Turned off S Voice as I primarily use Google Now.
An extra app I do use that I recommend is "AppMgr Pro III". It helps me determine what applications can be moved to SD Card. Some can be moved, but may impact widgets and what not, so it does a good job of letting you know if that is an issue or not.
Now that you are off your laggy phone, tell us how you love your S5
There are some bad S5's out there, got one yesterday. Lag was terrible, almost impossible to type because of the delay, scored low on Antutu, etc. Phone had other issues too - screen had uneven discoloration to it and bottom touch key buttons were unevenly lit.
Exchanged for another one and it was like night and day. All same apps installed, same settings and this new one has almost zero lag, typing is fine. If your phone has severe lag and stuttering, might be worthwhile to get it exchanged... My first one was a major lemon all around.

Some basic ROM feedback + MODs suggestion (D802)

I have been jumping between a few ROMs for a period of time now and finally decided to stick with one which I think is stable, fast and gives the best battery life by far. I admit I haven't tried all of the ROMs out there, also people have different set ups and use their phone differently. So please take what I say as a recommendation only, and I mainly wish to share some of my experience as I know how frustrating it can be to choose a ROM out of so many choices. At the end I also want to share the MODs I have been using and how I have personalized my device, hopefully will help someone out there.
Note: I didn't use the same MOD for all ROMs! See more explanation below.
ROM
Just to make it clear, I wipe all before flashing a new ROM. I don't use any kind of backup software, yes that is right I don't, call me insane But the result of poor battery life or restart/FC should not be caused by these factors. I also install about the same app back (give a take a couple which I don't use often) after a flash. I also use the same set up for all my ROMs e.g. Auto brightness, screen on time and etc.
STOCK
I have been on stock LG G2 ROM for about 5 months I think, there are some nice features and I have to say it is probably the most stable ROM out there.
But for me, I experienced a bit of lag here and there.
I think many out there will agree with me, when I say the ROM doesn't have the best UI design. I would recommend installing Xposed Installer (xda) and G2 Xposed (play store) and make some modifications yourself.
The battery is ok, last a day for me and ends up with 30% on a good day (often below 15%).
The biggest feature for me is the knock code to unlock device, I do miss it.
I didn't compare but the Camera app is better than Google Camera (opinion, didn't test).
CloudyG3 v1.3
Used this ROM for about a month, stable enough for daily driver.
Some lags when using the phone in general. Animation slow down is the main reason I decided to go with another ROM.
UI looks much nicer than G2 since it is based on G3.
Can use G3 TweaksBox to tweak UI like you can with G2 Xposed, but most features will require you to pay. Which I did, but don't think it is worth the money. Most changes require you to reboot to see effect and it is buggy.
Again knock code is a plus, better than stock ROM I think.
Slightly better battery than Stock but not much better, I would say about the same. Been using the same MODs since.
Camera is also pretty good, on par with STOCK (opinion, didn't test).
Mahdi-ROM 09/20
This is a very popular recommendation, rated the most stable ROM. But it is the opposite for me, phone would restart and FC.
Some bugs listed on ROM page. This doesn't affect me, but may affect some of you.
Very similar to CM11, a lot of options to tweak, too much in my opinion.
Battery life about same as stock, again the ROM wasn't stable enough for me so can't possibly have amazing battery life. Same MODs as I have now.
No knock code.
ParanoidAndroid 06/28
This is my current ROM, glad I decided to try it.
Very stable, haven't had a single FC or restart yet and I have been on it for weeks.
This is the fastest ROM, I don't notice any animation slow down at all. Ok a few times with the keyboard I am using but pretty sure it is the keyboard app.
Amazing battery life. e.g. 10 hours since unplugged, 2 hour screen on, 76% left.
Has double tab to wake, but no Knock code
Good amount of built-in customization
MODs + app suggestions
Twilight app (or something similar), for less harsh light on the eye when reading at night.
Google Now Launcher + Xposed GEL Settings, I like the Google Now being included in the launcher itself.
LiOn Tamer (AKA Unbounded) to stop wake-locks, just install and then done no set up require.
Silence app, which turns phone silent for those who work at from 9am - 5pm.
Calendar + Calendar Mute app which turn phone silent for those who are at University with odd lecture times.

Unfortunately I haven't tried all the ROMs, so can't give you any suggestion on them.
As for custom kernels and ART, I have been using whatever comes with the ROMs. The result on PA is so good (7.5 hours screen on time with 22% battery left), I never found myself in the situation of needing to tweak anything. Kernel is generally my last choice, because it is a lot of trial and error. The last I tried ART was when it was still in beta, I should really give it a go now it is more stable.
Can you provide a link to the 26/8 PA rom? Can't seem to find it in the PA thread cos there are only other dated roms. Sorry for being a noob cos I've never flashed aosp on my g2. Or which release did you use or would recommend?
Dont you miss the Qslide apps on stock roms? or the Qremote? (I use it all the time)
and thanks for sharing the expirience... I myself decided only to root the phone in the case that it won't be getting Android 5.0

When I first switched to AOSP roms I missed them a lot. Fortunately there is a mod for the quick remote but none for Qslide. Either way you'll find yourself not needing Qslide after some time.

I tried Qslide on stock, then never used it again. For me spliting the screen in half means i can't see much of anything. I think it might be useful when you get used to it, but I never really got used to it.
I never used Qremote because I don't own anything which requires a remote.

Nice write up! I used Mahdi, PA and CloudyG3 and agree with your comments. I'm currently running cloudyg3 and would like to add a few notes to those who are interested. Disabling all the animations does speed things up for me and the dev made the G3 Tweakbox features all free. PA is my second favorite ROM, super smooth and stable. If camera was better on PA, it would be my daily driver.

I'm really interested in trying the G3 rom. I've been using stock on this phone since I got it and I really love the built in features and stability. I've come from a long line of Nexus ownership and have a Nexus 7 2013 for AOSP support + latest updates.
I was really worried about the stability of the G3 port but feel a little more confident reading your review compared to other roms. Paranoid Android was always fun too, I just never tried it on my G2.

Yeah G3 Rom are very stable only some hiccups when you have too many apps open, apart from that everything is pretty good. Camera is normally the main selling point for most
Also I think going from stock -> G3 ROMs -> AOSP is a pretty good way going about it.
