i'm still on tw and unrooted, works perfectly fine for me unless if i'm hogging up resources

I haven't removed one piece of bloat and still on the stock rom (yesterday installed a custom kernel, but it was actually faster before that. i did it for battery life) and it's still running faster than ever. You might have a defective one.

No problems here, all bloat installed. Actually I have 752 apps installed.
I've used many different kernels and roms, stock and custom.
Only time there is any lag is when the apps are auto updating.
Try disabling any auto update, i.e. play store and Samsung apps.
Either set a schedule or do it manually.
Hope that helps, and I made the jump from s3 to the s5 as well.
T-Mobile Galaxy S5

I would honestly try going back to pure stock and see if you get the same results.
It could be the ROM you're using may have an issue, going back to pure stock can help rule that out.
Alternatively, getting a logcat and seeing if there's a ton of error messages may also do the trick.

I'm on stock rom and rooted. No lag whatsoever. Your running a custom rom and complaining about lag?? There's your issue right there. Most people completely stock don't even have your lag complaints.

Walk that iPhone 5S into the nearest Apple store and ask them to reimage your phone to one without iOS 8 beta....
If you are looking at a replacement, the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S5 with the latest updates is a very solid performing and non-laggy device.
My S5 works great and is:
1. A stock device with no root or customized ROM.
2. Loaded down with a lot of applications and widgets, but I've tested them over the years on an S3 or Nexus so I have a good idea of what is CPU heavy or battery heavy.
3. On the latest firmware (at least until 5PM PST when the VoLTE update is pushed) G900TUVU1ANE6.
4. Turned off S Voice as I primarily use Google Now.
An extra app I do use that I recommend is "AppMgr Pro III". It helps me determine what applications can be moved to SD Card. Some can be moved, but may impact widgets and what not, so it does a good job of letting you know if that is an issue or not.
Now that you are off your laggy phone, tell us how you love your S5

There are some bad S5's out there, got one yesterday. Lag was terrible, almost impossible to type because of the delay, scored low on Antutu, etc. Phone had other issues too - screen had uneven discoloration to it and bottom touch key buttons were unevenly lit.
Exchanged for another one and it was like night and day. All same apps installed, same settings and this new one has almost zero lag, typing is fine. If your phone has severe lag and stuttering, might be worthwhile to get it exchanged... My first one was a major lemon all around.

[Q] Looking for a little advice

So! My mother is on the lookout for a new phone, and this guy is cheap on Verizons site. Her phone that she has now, the LG Revolution, has constant freezing issues that irritate her beyond all belief, and because I know Android she dumps them all on me. I'm looking for some questions answered about this phone before I decide if this is the phone for her:
I have read on the Engadget Review that this phone freezes often. After custom ROMs are installed (I'm thinking MIUI), is this problem alleviated?
The LG Revolution has this weird issue where it's way too easy to scroll on it, which makes opening icons on any homescreen app drawer a huge PITA.
I basically need to be able to install ROM, drop it in her hands, and feel comfortable that she's not going to run into any hardware issues with the phone. This includes freezing because of memory issues.
Also, the drop of 4G isn't an issue, it's not in the area anyways.
Thanks guys for your comments and advice ahead of time.
This device pretty much poops on the revolution. That being said my device never froze when it was stock. We have alot of rom options from mtd based roms such as android 4.0 ICS v4, CM7.1 stable, Miui, Tsm pool party...also there are some really good TouchWiz Ginberbread roms such as, Superclean v.5, PWGB, Geewiz etc... I currently am bouncing between cm7 and ICS, but I cant say those are the best roms, they all are pretty good. You will just have to try them and see what your mother likes best.
No freezing problems here, although it does bug out on me with random pressings of the back key. Sometimes the phone will enter screen capture mode and take a screen shot every time I try to power it down. Removing the screencapture apk solves this.
Overall it has been a good phone and has served me well. Gotta love that Samsung display!
I havent had this device for that long, but I love it compared to by old Droid X, mostly due to nicer screen, better battery life, and easier hack-ability.
That being said, I personally am curious on what has been done, if anything, to the LG.
Has it been rooted?
Are you running aftermarket software?
Some freezing issues can be solved by changing ram parameters, others by getting rid of certain bad apps.
I personally would like to see if your problems are actually solvable before getting a new and unfamiliar device, just for S&G's of course
It is rooted, and even after messing with the ram settings tweaked it still freezes. The other problem is that it dies way quickly, even with JuiceDefender and a calibrated battery. She's only had it for a week, so she's not yet settled on that one's ways.

I've had this phone for almost two years now and I've never had it freeze up on me. Install the SuperClean3 ROM. Solid ROM for that phone. I currently have ICS but for your mother's phone use SC3.

I'm also a fan of SuperClean. Great rom, with none of the AOSP issues that I find to be annoying enough to avoid. If you want to tweak it a bit, add KGB kernel and maybe a different launcher (I like OMFGB-Launcher) and Rom Toolbox will handle just about everything else. This is my setup, no major tweaks (lag fix, etc) other than zram and 1.2 gHz overclock. Fast and stable.

[Q] LOW performance on Galaxy S3!

Hi,
Is anyone else experiencing this, or does anyone have a solution?
For some reason i'm not expereincing the full thrust of performance the Galaxy S3 has to offer.
The home screens 'jolt' when moving left to right, but the more annoying thing is that widgets (like the weather etc) KEEP disappearing and reloading (doesnt take long to reload, fine, but still! Galaxy S2 didnt do this!)
This was all noticiable in the 'TouchWiz' Launcher, so i thought i would try another launcher... Nope, same thing!! Apex, Launcher Pro, GO Launcher etc..
Also, some apps crash, more than the occasional crash you would experience on the S2.
It also freezes up on my for about 10 seconds before reloading the widgets/icons...
I've gone down SO many routes. Its definetly not that theres too much running, because i find myself closing apps through task manager ALL the time, more than i should need to ...But even with NO apps running, same thing
I just dont get, does anyone have a solution or could shed some light on WHY this is happening? I've hit a brick wall for trying to stop this and am hoping that its not just a 'dodgy device'!
Thank you to whoever responds...
Def sounds like a dud there. Try going into Apex launcher and tick the setting to keep the launcher in ram. Ive heard loads of problems about TW reloading itself after running things like the web browser and gaming :/

Networks do not matter with custom ROMs, as long as you are flashing a ROM for the right phone i.e. the international version, and not the north american version. (which you don't need to worry about yet because it's not out yet)
Check if you have Power Saving turned off. It throttles the CPU making scrolling etc noticeably slower.
Mine loads the weather widget coming out of S-Voice. But other than that never misses a beat. Smooth even when using 90% of its ram.
Did a test of its speed and its above the Asus prime easy, so sounds like you have an issue.

Not having any issues. Suggest you uninstall apps and track down what's causing you pain or take it back. There is nothing wrong with this phone. If you are having slow performance obviously a quad core phone may I suggest an iphone.

The thing is that a big company that is trying to resemble other competitors cant release a product that will act that way and call it their flag ship.... Most of the owners wont twik it. the phone its a big draw back for me and disappointment... Really miss my s2 some times. Its one thing to pile new features wether they work or not and make the product worse than its predecessor. Big big disappointment. Happy with the screen, battery and looks though will wait for a proper Rom or Google clean products that are to come.

Your S2 has had a years worth of development and optimization. I bet you'll say the same about your S3 when we're all using the S4.
I completely agree with the guy. My most common activity on my phone is browsing whilst listening to music, and this phone just can't hack it. Waaaay too regular cut outs, I'm pissed off.
Remove all bloatware and corresponding background services, get a good kernel (Franco r5 is great), you'll find phone is much better, in a few months, it will have moved on loads and will be so much better

Yall are the odd ones out then. my phone was actually VERY VERY good at multi tasking out of the box. i could surf the web, play my music, and watch a movie with super video....and never get redraws, or hickups, leave apps open and keep going......i could not get it to do any lagging unless you speaking of the micro stutter in home screens. which is gone now with a custom rom and a few misc things here and there.
yall seem to keep wanting to blame it on the phone.....i dont quite understand this.

[Q] Just got the GT-19300 and performance is not what I expected.

Hey guys,
Just got the phone the other day.
Some guy got it as free upgrade on billpay with vodafone but decided to keep his current phone and sell this on so I got it for a great deal.
I unlocked it and changed network and everything is fine EXCEPT.
It's running really slowly for some things, especially dialer, contacts and messages.
It's on 4.1.2 by the way.
I tried resetting to factory, wiping caches, reinstalling update through Kies, resetting to factory, wiping caches again.
Nothing helps.
Seems like a lot of other folks are experiencing this crap since JB switchover from ICS.
Is there any fix for this apart from rooting and installing custom ROM?
Didn't think I'd have to go the the hassle of doing this with such an expensive phone. At times it feels like my old Vodafone 858 smart
Seriously, it can take 4-5 seconds to open contacts, dialer or messages.
Once you open them they open fast after that, until they are released from ram again.
If Samsung are aware of this and are planning an update I will hold out for that, but otherwise, root + modded ROM I reckon, as this feels like a budget phone, not an S3.
This is really crap as I was all excited to finally have a nice , quick , responsive smart phone after well over a year on my old 858 smart.
A little underwhelmed to say the least.
I tried all the fixes like animations to 0.5x and turning off location data etc.. but no difference.
The hardware seems to be fine as it got 15700 I think it was in An tu tu, and everything registered as it should. Seems like hopelessly unoptomised software to me.
Any tips, fixes or suggestions form anyone would be welcomed.
Thanks,
Mark.

Tried contacts+ and was still not as responsive as I would have hoped.
I actually like the samsung default functions if they worked faster.
Is there any rom that keeps the default look and functions but is a lot better optomised and has better memory management?
I might go that route if there was such a thing?
Don't want to use a rom that would loose functions the phone has, just something more streamlined and a lot quicker.
Don't know anything about roms so any suggestions would be welcomed.
Do you reckon this might actually be officially fixed in a future update? Is there enough people complaining about these issues to raise a flag with samsung?
Feared it was a faulty phone, but after reading lots of similar reports I am at least glad that it appears to be software not hardware.
Just pick any stock based ROM. My recommendation is in a PM, because I don't want to start a flame war.
I don't know about future updates, but I don't think that they give a damn about what the community thinks/wants. (the community asked for documentation of the processor and they gave us nothing aside from stuff they had to release cuz law)

Thanks but I like the look of the default one.
Just rooted and installed Wanam lite and it's definitely a lot snappier. Still the problem with the dialer, contacts and message app being dropped from memory after not being used for a while.
Is there a way to edit files to lock the dialer, contacts and message apps to memory permanently?
That would solve the problem.

Keeping the contacts and dialer in memory is one of my favorite features of JKay's Mod. I'd highly recommend that you check it out and can't say enough good about the Deluxe settings application itself (paid app on the Play store) because it allows you to fully customize the stock look and feel to your liking.

Its a bit of work but ASOP is very nice as well, you should do a nadroid backup and have a quick look at CM10.1
Since the new mali drivers, its been very good and super fast on all screens.

Will keep this in mind in case I have any issues in the future, but for now it's running great.
After a day of using the Wanam lite rom I am happy enough but would like to see if I could get better performance.
Even with this Rom and the JK framework and settings app I still get the occasional bit of lag, especially when using the dialer, and contacts.
Even though with the whitelist checked in JK it seems that the dialer and contacts still get kicked out of ram after a while.
Am interested in finding the smoothest, fastest rom that has instant response with dialer and contacts and also has the latest features.
I don't want to loose any features the phone had by default either.
There are so many roms available and they all claim to be super smooth and fast, so it's hard to know which to use.
I don't want to spend a whole week installing rom after rom.
Would appreciate some feedback from you guys that have tried them all as to which is the smoothest, and is there any that has instant response with dialer and contacts. Hopefully a rom that performance doesn't degrade the longer the phone is running either.
Am I asking for too much or is there such a Rom?
Cheers,
Mark.

AT&T Stock JB 4.1.2 - Slow, lagging, pros and cons

Moving back from a CM 10.1 based rom to stock once the new JB update was released by At&t, I knew there would be a slight sacrifice in speed when going back to the TouchWiz UI. I was willing to take that small hit to get the s-pen and other stuff back. I have noticed a few things about this update and I am on the fence as far as whether or not to stick with it or go back to a CM 10.1 based or other ROM:
Pros:
* The Nature UI on TouchWiz is pretty. The slight drop shadows under app icons and some widgets is nice.
* I like the S-Pen stuff, though to be honest, I don't use it all that often.
* The sound quality seems to be improved on this update. Not sure why, but everything sounds better - music, calls, notifications.
* This stock ROM seems to handle the screen colors better. There is less of that annoying AMOLED color banding effect that drives me nuts on most other ROMs (I am a web and graphics designer, so these aesthetic things bother me).
* Signal Quality - It seems the signal is stronger and I do like knowing the difference between a regular 4g and an LTE signal. It seems the modem firmware is also better (which I installed along with this update) and quicker at locking on to a data connection.
Cons:
* TouchWiz UI is really quite out of date when you consider all the advancements Google has made to Android since version 4.1 as far as grouping of icons, project butter etc. It seems that not much has improved overall on Samsung's TouchWiz since the previous update.
* My phone really lags as far as overall performance. Some of this is most likely due to TouchWiz, but opening apps, going to task manager and other processes is painfully slow and annoying. Forget trying to open the camera app in a pinch when you want to shoot a candid. By the time the camera is ready to shoot, the moment is gone.
* The leds under the menu buttons are not used for notifications - It seems silly to me that Samsung or At&t would not take advantage of this functionality that most third party ROMs do. If my phone is in a separate room on vibrate or mute and I receive a text or call, I will not know this until I actually pick up the phone and turn on the display. That is silly.
* Battery Life - sucks period. This seems worse with the update.
I guess what I am trying to do here is find a reason to stick with this update and perhaps make improvements based on others opinions here. I think the most important issue would be improving the speed/responsiveness of the system overall.
I have been following some of the other offerings available as far as third party ROMs based off the official Samsung/AT&T 4.1.2 version. Padawan is one such ROM which had quite a bit of attention in the forum.
There are some solutions which others have reported which make noticeable speed improvements in general:
* Deodexing - I think this is possible on a rooted device with a stock ROM, but most just install a ROM which is already deodexed. I wonder how much improvement in performance is noted after this is done.
* Debloating - Removing unnecessary apps that the carrier has decided to include to increase value to the customer. I am not sure what improvement in performance this really offers as to affect performance negatively, these apps would need to be running in the background all the time, right?
* Go with a vanilla generic Android ROM which does not have the TouchWiz UI over it, such as something CM based. As nice as the speed improvements are in doing that, I still would love to keep my s-pen sensitivity and features on the odd occasions when I do use the s-pen.
Anyhow, enough of my long winded post. I am just really curious as to what others think.

Thanks for your response. It was already rooted, running TWRP. As far as debloating, so would I use Titanium Backup to freeze or remove the at&t specific apps? Also which At&T bloatware causes the most issues in terms of performance lag? There may actually be one or two of those apps whose hit on performance is outweighed by their usefulness...

Well, then that's totally subjective. What I usually do is I freeze such apps. If you do really need them, you'll miss them. Then that's the indication you should unfreeze them.
I'm amazed at how hit-and-miss people's reviews of stock 4.1.2 are. I'm running true stock - in that I'm using the odin package - and it's the fastest, and by far the most stable, JB ROM I've ever used on my Note -- and I've run the gauntlet with them. I simply used ES File Explorer to delete everything that at all looked like something from AT&T, and then I went into my running applications/services, and anything that I did not use, or thought I didn't use, I went into Titanium and froze. Now I'm always at ~300mb of free RAM and my battery rivals anything I've experienced -- even a drastically underclocked and volted ICS kernel.
I did, however, accidentally delete my calculator in the process. I get a little aggressive with my cleaning of things. On the bright side, I found a CM calculator port on the market which is prettier and gets the job done.
I am running a stock rooted Rogers JB 4.1.2. It is by far faster, smoother, and better battery than the ICS counterpart. If I turned off Location services the battery would even be better.
I believe the problems most are experiencing is from dirty flashing. Format that USB storage and wipe the data before installing the ROM. I know from experience. I installed using odin without wiping or formatting anything. Yes I kept all my apps and info but what I was left with was a laggy and battery hungry phone.
I understand that the Quadrant test doesn't mirror real life but on my phone I constantly achieve higher test scores with stock 4.1.2 than with cm 10.1 or cm10.0.
Not saying I like it better or worse but I don't think speed is that bad on stock 4.1.2

I've been searching for a while, but obviously not good enough.
I've never rooted an Android phone and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to root my AT&T JB updated i717 and replace it with the stock Android JB. I've had numerous problems with the stock AT&T JB (mainly Talkback launches on it's own, Wifi doesn't connect, Battery life sucks).
Thanks, in advance for any help and sorry for being a relative Newbie and asking what is an obvious question to most of you.

I suggest to do a full wipe data and cache. But be sure to backup your personal files as they Will be deleted. Try looking at how root videos on youtube to get an idea how to root. Heres one for an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zpi8yCYJOt8&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Thank you !!! I've been watching a lot of them, but they don't seems to be exactly right. I really appreciate the feedback and help !!!
The thing I don't like about using any other ROMs, is that the "Auto Screen Tone Adjust" setting is not in any of them, and the screen automatically dims on white backgrounds and I don't like that. Is there a way to fix that or add the setting in another ROM?

What is best option for nexus9.

Hi guys,
I'm sorry cause asking this, especially cause this question has been asked manytimes and I have read several subjects too, but I didn't strict answer I'm looking for.
I recently bought nexus 9 (WiFi only model) 16gigs,
I unlocked bootloader, I rooted the device and now I want to debloat it.
I'm in dilema weither I should just have it rooted and debloated on 7.1.1. android, or should I use some of the custom roms around.
I'm aiming to use tablet mainly for gaming. I have servral games I'd like to play listed:
Marvel Future Fight
DC Legends
Star Wars Galaxy Heroes
Star Wars Force arena
and few others but i take it that if those can run fine, all others would too.
Also can someone point me to a safelist of application that can be removed if answer to first question is to just leave it rooted and debloat.
Thank you a lot for help.
Cheers.

For the best performance, install a custom ROM. As for debloat, ... It's a Nexus, what bloat?
But if you want minimal, I would say flash slimrom and the smallest gapps package that fits your needs. Or go gapps free and use micro g instead.
Performance on stock is pretty bad (really bad), but a custom ROM will fix it for the n9. When I say bad on stock, I mean opening more than 1 tab in chrome, it has to reload the page every time switching between the two. Same with having a couple apps open.
Fortunately, most of the ROMs out there take care of all that.

I'm on latest Android 6 stock, unencrypted and Fire Ice kernel. its running fine and if use the chrome that comes with the stock and don't update it, it will run fine.
How would someone find official roms? I used pure nexus rom thinking that is official but i guess i was wrong. I not to big on roms knowing. They all looks the same to me I just care to be able to uninstall builtin apps i don't use and that everything works fine.
This one i use now had a problem common with nexus 9, white blocks and anoying skrechy sound, but i read somehwere it is fixed by unhoking battery, cleaning pins and putting it back together. I tried it and I didn't have problems since then. I drained battery to 2% no problem, before it was impossible. I have no idea was it ROM issue or what.

That's a common hardware issue for n9, not a ROM issue.

But it's safe to say that it's fixed now. Everyone was talkin about disconnecting battery, and clean a bit and connecting again.
it seems such a easy troll solution to this "very anoying and hard problem that even HTC didn't solve", and i did it and it really did the job (knock on a wood ). I've been draining battery to the end for 3 days now, nothing ever like that happend ever again. before it wasn't even a day when i didn't experienced that problem.

Good to hear. That usually is the fix for that.
Please, just to confirm, is this "image-volantis-n9f27l" official ROM or it's custom ROM?
I also use this bootloader : "bootloader-flounder-3.50.0.0143" since other ones didn't work for me.
I was with support trying to solve issue of Device restarting every time I install new app or update app, and while trying to clear cache partition, it gone to my device not wanting to boot. so i had to factory reset, and it still won't start android in full. so i have to reflash ROM. I guess.
I'm kinda lost now cause i don't know what to do.
As said i just want for my device to be rooted so i can delete all apps i don't need and change launcher (deleting existing one - well i don't know if it's smart or not. i figure why having two launcers when i will use only one).
And i want to play games and use apps without it failing on me all the time.
