The One, Its bootloader, AT&T, and me. - AT&T HTC One (M7)

Has anyone said definitively the One's bootloader will be unlockable on HTC Dev, no matter the carrier? The One X was an amazing device, ruined by a horrible carrier. I want one, but only if it can be unlocked. I've scoured the internet and can't find anything other than links to HTC dev for bootloader unlock, but as we all know, HTC bowed to AT&T's wishes and the One X STILL can't be officially unlocked.

I haven't seen anything either, but I don't expect that to change since it's more of an AT&T policy than a manufacturer's call. And HTC needs all the carrier support it can get in the US right now so I'm sure it will be. However, I do know the AT&T One X+ can be unlocked even though it doesn't specifically state that on the HTC Dev page.
Regardless, you can get S-Off on the One XL now if you're willing to go for it so I wouldn't be too concerned. As for the One, ff AT&T won't let HTC let you unlock it, someone around here will figure out how to do it anyway.

Have you guys even bothered looking in the dev section? There's already a few people unlocked and rooted.

At&t hasn't released yet. I wanted to know if anything has been said regarding carriers restricting the unlock. What's out there now is irrelevant.

After the one x, at&t allowed the one x+ to be unlocked so I assume it will be unlockable

thanks. That's good to know.

Its not unlockable, AT&T have blocked it again. It may get overturned as of last year but the reason for the developer addition was to get around this issue.

Typical - But I'll still put my faith in the folks around here to be able to work around that. Maybe not right away, but it will happen. The real trick would be S-Off, but that will take a while longer I assume.

I've looked in the devs section and I've found NOTHING saying anyone has gotten the AT&T version bootloader unlocked.
If you'd like to point us to a thread, perhaps?

If you look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2223236 you see there are 3 variants of the One. IMO the AT&T version should be the same as a EU version as far as I can tell, so it should be able to unlock without issues.

That's why I buy all my phones from the UK (clove) and have them shipped into the states. I really hate dealing with AT&T and there b.s.

I can't decide if I should cancel my AT&T pre order and get the Developer edition.

GUNNY! Great question. I moved to the x+ and forgot about that. You can bet if AT&T one cant be officially unlocked on day 1 its goin back. I won't deal with that bs from AT&T again. That's what ruined development for the AT&T one X. And yes the att X+ was unlockable from day 1.
And of course it's not in the dev section yet...that's because it hasn't been released.... Smh.
I don't think you can trust what any htc rep or AT&T rep says...learned that dealing with the HOXL. Just have to wait and see.

Gunny I'm glad you brought this up. It opened my eyes. I just canceled my pre order from ATT. I actually think i made out like a fat rat! They charged my credit card $750 bucks for the phone because i called in to order it, couldnt order from the business side online at early launch. She said she had to charge me full price that was in the computer and would credit me the difference. So she credited my wireless account $75. Nothing was mentioned about that at cancellation so maybe that will stick Also they said that the free HDMI thingy was for 2 year contract customers so they didnt add to my order. I complained so they sent one out free. It's already shipped. So i'm getting an unlocked dev edition for $649, a $75 credit to my wireless account and a free HDMI gift Anyone know what the best US insurance company is? That's the only disadvantage, no ATT insurance. Gotta call and remember to cancel the ONE X+ Insurance.
And to make things better, it's possible i get it even sooner than the ATT.

The Dev edition isn't shipping on Monday. It's a glitch their system. Mine was shipping on Friday until Friday passed. Customer service said the shipping date is the 18th. As of Friday, they didn't even have stock. Hopefully it ships sooner but I'm not expecting it.
Also, as said in previous posts, if your worried about a locked bootloader then buy the Dev edition. If you buy AT&T branded, then be prepared to live with the BL being locked. Not much room to complain since HTC is giving an option. For those that are signing a contract, you could always sell and order the Dev edition. That is if it's still available.

T-Mobile rep? Got a question for ya...

ok, heres the deal. i have a friend on a different network that really wants the s3 when it comes out. he is willing to pay full price for the phone as the carrier he has now has a horrible selection of phones (their top of the line phone is the sensation). anyways, since im on a value plan, heres what im trying to figure out:
is it possible for me to buy a phone outright, have t-mo unlock it and give it to him?
since im on a value plan, can i buy as many phones as i want so long as ive completely paid them off?
i basically want to buy 2 phones at the same time, one for me and one for him. is it possible to do that without messing with my plan at all?
thanks
He can even buy the phone himself if he wants.
Just need to go into any T-Mobile store, pay full price on the phone, and request they unlock it and fax in proof of purchase.
Bam unlocked phone.
You don't technically have to pay off your amaze... You can do partial financing. Your down payment would be the balance of your available EIP.

BS, who told you that none sense? Go read their policy, once an individual buys a device at full prices, whether they're a current customer or not, the unlocking department has to provide an unlock once proof of purchase is show via fax to the said department.
Post paid customers have to be on a plan I think about 30 days the least or was it three months? Eh whatever and pre-paid have to be for at least a month with at least 10 bucks on their account.

He's right. As long as you bought it from a Retail or Authorized store and have the proof of purchase, then they will unlock it.
Current customers must have an account in good standing for 90 days and can only request one unlock code every 90 days.

It's "nonsense" but I worked as a CSR for 2 years and had friends that worked in the stores. You can't call CS and request an unlock code if you aren't a current customer and my friends who worked in the store couldn't do it either for non-active customers. The program that is used to request the unlock code has to have the active customer's T-mobile phone number input as a requirement, not optional.
Here's even a recent former customer that tried to get a SIM unlock and was told to reactivate his service to get the code. He was told the same thing I'm saying.....you have to be an active customer.

Congrats on getting a Note 2 man! Hopefully we'll still see you around every once in a while.
Mind if I asked where/how you got it?
My upgrade isn't available for a while, and I'm not sure adding a line and then paying the extra 10 bucks a month for it to get the subsidized fee is worth it. What's the most economical way? Is ATT selling it off contract for $599 like they do with most if their phones?
Hey james...Actually me and my wife signed up for AT&T in March 2012...I've had a few problems with my phone...But I called 611 and got through a sales rep...I asked politely since am having some phone issues if could receive a early upgrade...He asked his supervisor and whalaa..The phone is 299.I received the upgrade for my line but not my wifes....(she has a s2) And that was it...I had to use a credit card to put the phone on a hold until it ships then they charge the credit card...Its worth a shot if you had it...the worst they can say is no..But if so..Sell your current device in CL for 300 or 350 and use that for your upgrade..so your not using anything....Try it ..Can't hurt

I'm in the same situation with my RF and SD issues. I'll give it a shot asap.
what kind of sd card do you have?..I just realized mine is a 16gb class 2 sd card...That's a very slow read/write speed ..
There was a sd card fix somewhere I would try First though before deleting anything I'll look for it .
Here is some info on classes of micro sd cards and there read/write speeds I found this...Am getting a faster one for the note2....
http://samsunggeeks.com/2012/05/20/micro-sd-cards-smartphones-speed-class-explained/
I was also having trouble with my Note and finally after speaking to a supervisor, he said I could get any other phone for the upgrade price (except the iphone). I told him I wanted the Note 2. He told me the system would not let him order that since it had not come out yet. This was last Friday. I told him I would wait then. He said he was putting the offer in my case notes. So I plan to call back this Friday and hopefully get the Note 2.

This is a rather long narrative, but it illustrates the inconsistency of dealing with AT&T. I know we have all have read posts in these forums and thought to ourselves that they must be lying, because I tried the same thing, but I did not get that result. So anyway I called this morning to get my upgrade and was told I must have misunderstood, because I had owned my phone for only 8 months and it is impossible to get an upgrade. I said there were supposed to be notes on this, and they said there were, but it was unclear whether it was a standard upgrade or just an early upgrade, and that they were not able to contact the supervisor who I spoke to. They said they still wanted to help and the fourth person I spoke to came up with this elaborate plan. I would add a dummy line for $10 a month and they could have my new phone added to this number. They would give me $150 credit and also credit 6 months of email ($90) so the $10 for the 24 months of my commitment would be a wash. I told him that I did not want any of my plan to change, since much of it is grandfathered rates. He said he could code it so it would stay the same. So right before he was to confirm, he said sorry, I would have to change to a family plan. I said no, and asked him why he could code in this complicated plan, but couldn't do some code for an upgrade. He said he couldn't and after a 2 hour phone conversation I was back at square one. So this afternoon I called back to find out what it would cost me to discontinue service and decided I would switch to another carrier and get a new Note 2. The guy asked me why I was canceling my service, I told him and he said he looked at my account and I have really been put through the wringer. He said he could help, and I said I have heard that line before. About ten minutes later he came back on the line said he had authorized an upgrade and for my inconvenience will deduct $50 from the price and charge me $249.99. He also said he will throw in free priority shipping and I will receive it Monday. After giving him my credit card number and thanking him he said wait, I see your last statement has just come out, to keep you as a valued customer, we will pay that also, I am marking that as paid right now. You could have knocked me over with a feather. As I was typing this, I received my email confirmation that it has already shipped. What a crazy deal.

Droid DNA on AT&T HSPA+

I know it won't work on the LTE network, but will it at least work fully on the HSPA+ network like a Nexus 4 would? I'm planning on getting one or the other and using it on Straight Talk (via AT&T)
The Droid DNA will work on AT&T gsm and 3g. It does not have the same theoretical download speeds of the nexus 4 however. The nexus 4 supports up to 42Mbps, AT&T provides only up to 21Mbps and the Droid DNA only supports up to 14.4Mbps. But on an AT&T network, the speed difference shouldn't be an issue.

I know its gonna be an epic phone.....but all bias aside, a lot of people are hating on it and will dislike it for some stupid little reason. And because its not quite as main stream as I personally believe it should be, you should be able to pick one up for somewhere around 350~400 in brand new condition I would think. Thats only because you konw as well as I do that its just a phone that everyone and their mom isn't gonna be out to get.
That's just my honest opinion......I personally would be willing to pay 800 for it if I had to, I love the phone!!

350-400, may be 8 months from now.
AT&T users are better off waiting for the international version to be released. It'll support HSPA+ 21MB and possibly even 42MB. It will also most likely be modeled after the J-Butterfly so it will have removable storage. It also won't have VZW's insane bloatware and you'll get updates directly from HTC. Importing one though will probably be more than the $600 VZW is charging off contract.

The only problem (besides probably price) is availability. They haven't even announced it, let alone given a release date.

So (price aside) you'd rather buy a device that won't perform as well and has fewer features rather than waiting a couple of weeks? Evleaks are the ones who posted the Droid DNA press shot leaks and the device was announced three weeks later. They're also the ones that posted the Deluxe press shot. So if history repeats itself you'll know more by the end of the year. For something that you'll own for probably a year waiting a couple of weeks doesn't seem like a bad idea. How will you feel using a hobbled DNA (VZW borked the settings toggle for the soft button so it behaves like the OG One X did initially) on AT&T if a better version of the same phone's available a month or two after you buy it? 21+MB HSPA and expandable storage aren't trivial features. HTC's in bad financial shape and needs to grow revenue. They aren't going to be coy about getting new high-end devices to market as soon as they are ready. And with the J-Butterfly and DNA shipping the hard stuff's already been completed. Also if you're interested in development the international Deluxe will have far more XDA support than the DNA. Look at the current AT&T XL dev section compared to the OG One X.

Perhaps not, but the price of importing it will be expensive and few will actually do that. AT&T is never going to get this phone. Period. Verizon only Droid brands phones it has US exclusivity on and AT&T has the One X+, there's no reason for them to carry it right now. And if someone really wanted this phone with costs considered the One X+ is where they would end up.

Pure conjecture. There's a variety of levels and reasons why some devices have more dev support and others.

Who said they were? But for people that can afford a $600 non-subsidized device paying an extra $100 (WAG) to get one that works better on their network doesn't seem irrational. There are quite a few people in the OG One X forum from the U.S. they paid more than $600 to import their phones; myself included. Even more from the U.S. have done the same thing with SGS3 and Note II. Part of paying the extra $'s over just getting a subsidized phone is receiving updates directly from HTC, using all their features (Watch, Hub, Locations, etc.) as they intended, no carrier molestation of the h/w or s/w, and tethering. Using a phone dependent on one carrier for updates on another carrier's network kind of defeats the purpose; especially at $600.
Pure conjecture.

First, there's no doubt after what VZW pulled with their version of the SGS3 that the DNA is going to be locked down like a fortress. HTC only unlocks carrier devices through HTCdev with the permission of the carrier. Which way do you think VZW will lean? That, and the fact it's only offered on one network (albeit one of the world's largest) don't seem like a recipe for a big dev community. Especially if a more open better featured international version is announced this year (which I agree is pure conjecture).
I'm not trying to tell you or anyone else what to do. I'm interested in the Deluxe and just sharing my thoughts on it vs. the DNA.

A full month after the other carriers? Err....if that's true, then what the hell is going on at Verizon? I mean, beside them holding off that long just so they can take a branding iron to the phone.
The only thing keeping me from being pissed-off (with Verizon) is I'm holding out for the 32GB unit which doesn't appear to be available yet.
The current pre-orders with other carriers are all for the 16GB unit.

At least they didn't brand the home button. Next to the Galaxy Note 2 that's a very acceptable level of branding for Verizon.
The delay is probably because they're putting a big fat lock on the bootloader

I heard from one of my sources that the bootloader may actually be left unlocked on this device. Although the source it is coming from I am not sure if they know what a bootloader is exactly. I just asked the question and that's what I was told but not with 100% certainty here. Take as you will.
The reason is there might be a 50% chancee the Verizon Version will have the 800 snapdragon that's why they are going to have that huge presentation in may to let people now about how Verizons will be a true beast compared to the others. So I'm and since the 800 is new it will be very very limited that's why only Verizon will have it and no bootloader Samsung already said no..

Lol... Late to the party as usual. Useless Verizon. At least they didn't put the ugly home button with Verizon logo this time. I don't know how anyone can stand the ugly Verizon logos on the front of the device.
From a customer service standpoint, it makes perfect sense from verizon.
Working at at&t, I can tell you it's going to customer complaint galore over here. The phones are on back order at least four days before they even hit stores. This means that in stores like mine they're going to have frustrated customers because we will hardly receive any phones the first month while at&t struggles to keep up with the preorders and that those who preordered will be pissed having to wait a good bit after release to receive a phone that they were supposed to receive a few days after release at the latest.
my guess is that Verizon wants some more time to sell off the leftover s3's. either that or they want to wait to see if there are any major bugs to be patched.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I had 2 buggy verizon preorder s3's. 1 I still have to flash the ota's on because it says cannot connect to server and the other worked itself out(data wouldn't connect). I imagine that since they don't want all those silly warranty returns they are going to wait for the other carriers to launch and do a market study.

This is utter crap from verizon its just unacceptable for them to do thus to their customers. I'm seriously thinking about dumping them for T-Mobile. Not only will I save about 50-60$ a month but I can get my upgrades back, unlimited minutes, and gsm phones. Unlimited data only goes so far with verizon if they choke you everywhere else

Official update and launch dates in OP
I'm just dropping the $650 up front. 16GB+64GB is plenty.
Question is, can I just walk in on the 30th and buy one or are they going to be sold out? Wondering if I should pre-order to be safe.
Anyone know if you can still upgrade on another line and then activate phone on a line with unlimited data?

Absolutely. :good:
LOL, so glad I switched to Sprint. I refuse to wait another month! I couldn't even if I tried. My current phone is damaged & not worth making a claim, but still makes calls.
Crap, I just misread the date and thought it said April 30. Now I'm mad. There's no way to get an "unlocked" one elsewhere and get it going on their network? I don't care where I buy the thing if I'm paying full price anyway.

Will there be a black T-Mobile HTC One?

Just wondering if anyone knows if there will be a black HTC One for T-Mobile.

I don't know. The live experience tour and press release said this:
AT&T: Available on April 19th in silver and black with 32GB of memory for $199.99, and in sliver with 64 GB of memory for $299.99 with a two-year commitment.
Sprint: Available on April 19th in silver and black with 32GB of memory for $199.99 with a two-year commitment.
T-Mobile: Available later this spring in silver with 32GB of memory.
Best Buy: Available with service from AT&T and Sprint in conjunction with wireless operator availability.

I'm sure the black would have more visable scratches than the silver one, so no biggie. I wanted silver anyways since I always get dark phones. Switch it up this time.

Thanks for the info. But ugh. What the hell? Why is T-Mobile always at the bottom of the barrel? What is so complicated about offering both colors, since HTC is making it anyway? (And don't even get me started about the 64 GB thing. Hey let's artificially limit the availability of the more expensive model so that we can make less money by not selling them to people who want them! Yeah, great idea.)

Maybe it's my skeptical nature, but it seems like a lot of tmobile customers receiving the One are seeing quality issues more frequently than in other markets, so I have to wonder if HTC, scrambling to meet demand amid quality control nightmares on the first builds, has a few grades of quality, where ATT gets the better stock and tmobile gets the scraps! I dunno, but I wouldn't put it past T-Mobile to say, 'sure! we'll take the scraps!!"
who knows!
I've been pestering @Tmobile on twitter and their chat reps for about a week now and they always respond "we have no info on that at this time". The silver One seems to be selling well so hopefully they will pick up the black One soon. I'm holding out til maybe june to see if things change before I move on to a different device but I am very prepared to be disappointed.

This has been the same song and dance with HTC since Windows Mobile 6 was "all the rage"... HTC has NEVER released a device that didn't take one or two revisions to get right... And I've owned a ton of them. Never again will I buy an HTC device on launch... Everyone else can beta test for me!

And that's the only one I never had LOL. Everyone said the HD2 was the best phone HTC had ever made. I had the MyTouch 4G and the Sensation 4G and they both were horrendously built...
my sensation i got on release date and it's been fine... ,inus that fall down the stairs
The HTC One is sort of a reincarnated modern version of the Hd2. I love it! I got my tmobile one yesterday and there are no build quality issues. In fact it's better than most people who have been receiving these first batches of ones. All my edges are prestine with no "gaps."
I feel like the tmobike version is a custom unlocked HTC one. My brother has stock fireware on his and it said att for a second while he was using it. I put trickdroid on mine within the first couples hours after receiving the phone.

Um you mean the same song and dance with EVERY manufacturer? It's not a htc thing. The 1st batch of iPhones had QA issues, the 1st batch of GS3's had QA issues. Yes being a early adapter sucks but don't just pick on htc and make them out to be the only ones!
Ugh... I really want the black one! I've had nothing but light colors phones in the past and i am bored of it! I think black looks better on cases.. just my opinion.. we have 20 days to return the device if ordered on tmobile.... maybe somethign will show up..
