[Q] How to make phone faster? - Samsung Galaxy 5 I5500

I recently got android 4.0.4 for my phone. I used this link: http://www.arulraj.net/2012/07/upgrade-samsung-galaxy-5-to-ice-cream-sandwich.html The problem is that my phone is extremely slow and many apps just force close on start. How can i speed up my phone? I was researching this problem and many ppl said something about kernels. Should I get that for my phone and how will it help? Also, what apps help make it faster and what else can i do to make my phone faster?Btw the phone is rooted.

Don't touch the kernel if you are inexperienced in such things you will just screw the rom up... go into developement settings and overclock your cpu to 768mhz for a start. governer... smartass v2 should be fine. use a task manager to kill background apps etc. there are many things you can do but remember that 4.0 has higher requirements than our phone has so performance will always be an issue... if u want have a look into swap partitions, cpu overclocking, cpu governers, I/O Schedulers, Caching etc... there is so much to tweaking performance to get the most out of your device

When I stop apps that r running, they just come back within 5 seconds. Also, i am already at 768mhz. 768 mhz has made it a little faster, but some apps wont launch and just stop when i launch them. Is there a way to get them to work?

I really would suggest you change roms mate, either CyanogenMod 7.2 or 10.1
10.1 is Android 4.2 and 7.2 is 2.3.7
naturally 7.2 is fastest and most stable.

But why is it that some apps work and others dont?

How about increasing the ram? Can I do that?

Will this work? http://www.droidiser.com/2012/05/how-to-increase-internal-memory-and-ram.html

You cannot increase the RAM like in a computer as it is attached to the motherboard directly. That link describes using a swap partition on the sd that acts kind of like ram but it is not ram itself, it is slower than ram and less efficent however swap can be useful. I have tried swap and noticed no real difference in performance at all but you could sure try it... just remember to enable swap in the cyanogenmod settings otherwise the partition will do nothing and u lose valuable sd card space

i'm using CM7,should i use CM10 or MIUI or still using CM7?
sorry about my english

Use seeder app set to aggresive, no need to oc just set gov to performance. If you not use any ramscript use romtool box go to memory manager try optimum preset. And also go to sd booster to boost your sd speed cache.
That's all Regards

Honestly, make an effort to purchase a new phone. I've had a i5000 foir almost a year and sometimes I almost went crazy due to its slowness.
You can try using a (fast) sdcard as supplementary memory, but it will be still slow. And no way to use a CyanogenMod later than 7.2. Stick with this at minimum.
But you can find really good bargains at ebay. Please consider it.

[Q] Keeping app in memory

Normally when I run into issues, I google them or find answers all over the interweb or older threads. But this time, I've ran into a wall. I just flashed the Infinity rom by Nims and it comes with Lagfree and TurboBoost preinstalled. Phone runs smoothly as hell even when clocked at 480. Now the problem is, it kills random apps to free up RAM. Including HeyWire and WhatsApp which I need and use a lot.
Is there a way to exclude them from getting killed? I honestly don't know what to do this time since its not a task killer and I can't put them on exclude.
This might not help, but why not adjusting the minfree values?
Nitro Lag Nullifier......might help or not .

Isn't that another script? The Infinity rom already comes preloaded with LagFree and TurboBoost. Won't more scripts mess up performance?

Lucky you got the replies.. I asked same question some days before. I searched internet a lot. But found Google didn't provide such a facility in it's APIs. Activity Stack in Android is automatically handled, can't be altered by APP. If it'd possible. Imagine What would happen when some n00b locks all apps in his Android device!
Here all you can do is, reduce the priority how frequent your app should be killed. In other words, exactly what adeklipse said.

Yeah. That's why I decided to ask. I rarely do. I solve all my stuff by my self and ask questions when I reach walls like these. But as for the minfree values, since they're scripts (Lagfree & Turboboost) can it be edited?
What if I delete the scripts and install Ram Manager instead? That app from the XDA developer. Anyone knows if its gonna be the same performance?

Where did you hear that? MinFree are the "values" not the "Scripts". For "very" elaborated info I'd say google it. And Since they are values, the changes will be reverted automatically by the init.rc call in your boot image at the boot time of your phone, until and unless you set them to load itself on boot time by app like "MinFree Manager". I have used "MinFree Manager" app & that app itself said if anything goes wrong, reboot should restore back the values.

I have been using RAM Manager & what I observed is, it changed permanently the way android handled the RAM. Even if you reboot, the changes were there. & it "really" did what it said. I changed the way it handled the RAM frequently.

No, no, no. I meant since they're scripts, meaning LagFree and TurboBoost. And about ram manager, is it safe to assume I can uninstall the 2 scripts and replace them with that app? Do you think performance will be the same? Lol I'm sorry I'm asking so much. These scripts came preloaded with the rom and even when I flashed them manually in ICS Final, they didn't work this good by freeing so much ram.
About to just make a backup, delete them and install ram manager.

I am always kinda thrifty in applying these mods cause I know I "have to" use my SGA for long time. What I always felt insecure about was kernels. So I haven't flashed any custom kernels ever. & therefore, I have not tried those scripts either. So I can't tell you difference between them and RAM manager's performance. But what I assume, deleting scripts and just trying RAM Manager's performance wouldn't hurt you, if you've gone this far.. would it? Share your experience here.

Yeah, I did it. But I left some files from the TurboBoost script for the touchscreen. It was acting like its old self without it so I flashed it again and left some files. That's the only mod I have on my phone.

So how the hell does she get smooth playing flash video from this TV site: http://www.navidiku.rs/tv-uzivo/tv-pink
While i have to overclock my phone to 1800Mhz to make it bearlly smooth...HOW is that possible???
I checked she had flash player 10.3.186.3 and i downloaded and installed that one but its the same thing...:/ i had Flash 11 before.
I can play Youtube video 360p smooth and around 1400Mhz 480p smooth. And phone is overall very snappy and fast, i mean i can play N64 games smooth, like Extreme G 2 for example...
So why is mine phone choppy while her is running smooth on stock 1000Mhz...?
1400...1800MHz are you serious.... :what:
You should not overclock your phone to such high frequency... It will burn down your CPU...

I did not do any adittional tweaks, also, only apps that are running in the background are Settings and Lg keyboard, because i kill all the running apps when i reboot my phone to free all the RAM.
Also, as far as i know, you can overclock your phone as long as it doesn't overheat... But still, that's why i want to make it go smooth, i want to make overclocking less needed...
Looking at the kernel thread it appears to be quite old, try using the CM7 Kernel instead, make some tweaks and see how that goes.

Just to be clear, killing some apps in ram manually is not, efficient; it may really affect the performance (many topics/debates already out there). Try testing it with uninstalled apps (clean rom with minimal needed apps). And I agree many other factors may still affect it(scripts, tweaks, etc).
K thx. I will try out some other ROMs and kernels...hope to find something similar to CyanogenMod...I cant use kernel provided with ROM because phone is then loaded with bugs (no second speaker, camera freezing, touchscreen problems...etc) because fix for these only works on Rage kernel.

[Q] Galaxy player 4.0 randomly has crash and reboots after heavy usage.

The way my GP 4.0 works is odd...It's as if after every reboot, the player has a certain amount of fuel (and no I'm not referring to the battery). After usage, that fuel gets burned down and the player starts running sluggishly and eventually either freezes up and forces me to do a forced shut down or it reboots itself. I usually can't keep the thing on without a reboot for longer than 3 days. It's not a major issue, but it makes playing games rough because sometimes in the middle of a game, the player just freezes up and reboots. The battery typically never goes beyond 100 degrees F, unless I'm in a hot car or something.
Anyone else got this problem? Any suggestions? I've heard of something called Lagfix that does something like trimming or something of the sort...Yeah, noob here. Would that fix me up? Running gingerbread 2.3.5 stock rom and kernel.

try a factory reset and dont install anything after.
if it doesnt seem to hang, reinstall your apps slowly, one by one to see which one is causing the problem
Your player is using to much ram so it's going to restart. Use the task manager to kill any app you aren't using.

2 problems with that. 1. in the task manager, no tasks are seen running. I almost always have around 70 mb of ram free no matter what. 2. if I use a task killer (such as advanced task killer), I can kill apps that are running (such as the ebay app...Not sure why that even runs in background), but they come back on within seconds....do I just need to uninstall apps?
I will suggest you try using advance task manager to monitor your applications, rather then the system's task manager.

But when I kill a task in advanced task killer to kill unwanted running apps, they come back on after like 5 seconds. However, these are apps that I'd like to have installed, such as ebay, weather, and youtube. Do you suggest just uninstalling as many as possible?
I would do a complete reset and then slowly install your apps. This way u can see what is causing the problem.

Are you using a custom rom? You shouldn't have 70mb all the time. You should have at least 162mb when it just starts booting up, and then 100mb- 120mb when using it. ADW Launcher is kinda heavy on memory. Try Holo Launcher or one that doesn't use a ton of ram. I remember on mine it was Go Launcher using too much ram, and it was causing it to stutter. Also I suggest uninstall (or just doing a complete restore) some of the apps. Our players suck with managing ram imo lol.

Stock rom and stock kernel. Would custom ones be better?
I do get the around 160 mb of ram when booting up. Actually, I do have around 90 mb of ram available after the boot up. Well, the thing is, is that adwlauncher has almost made it all better. It just runs so much smoother than touchwiz and i like it a lot. However, I can try another I suppose. Well that sucks. Should I start using a task killer and having it auto kill or something? I mean I don't really wanna uninstall youtube, or ebay, but I guess I could uninstall some other stuff.
Okay, so last night I uninstalled some apps that according to advanced task killer were running in the background. I've also uninstalled Lookout just to free up some more ram. now I get about 90-100 mb of ram when idle, and things are working all right for now. I'll report how it performs after a day or two...It's just a shame that the galaxy player has so little ram that I'm forced to uninstall some apps that won't even give me the option to stop them from running the background.

Custom Kernels, and roms help the player a lot imo. I would at least flash a custom kernel, because it boots the total ram from 342 to 352mb. Yeah I think that since you have a lot of apps installed it is bogging down the player. Uninstall the apps you don't need, or rarely use. I know I wished samsung would have properly upgraded our players. Instead we got the 3.6, and 4.2 which do some things better, but other things worse. They made the 5.8 but to me it's not worth the money.

Okay so unfortunately, I just got another crash/reboot. I was playing Draw something with my sister when suddenly it began to hang for about 4 seconds and then just reboot. This is the normal crash I used to get, and always get after about 3 days of having the thing on and using it. I had plenty of open ram when this happened. before I opened draw something, I had about 100 mb of ram.
Uninstalling apps has cut down on the amount of lag and hangs I get, but I still get this stupid reboot deal after a while...Is there any way to make this stop? I mean I could just do a factory reset, but I almost don't even think it's worth having to redo everything just to fix rebooting once every 2 or 3 days.

If your galaxy player is rooted I would try installing a custom kernel and see what happens. Because 1) It gives you the ability to overclock to 1.2 ghz (If you buy tegrak or set cpu you can overclock to 1.3 or even 1.5ghz). This helps with lag and memory issues from my experience, and 2) You can make a backup of your files on your device using ClockWorkMod, so you don't have to redo everything if factory resetting doesn't work.
But most likely I think you are going to have to just do a factory reset. Usually that fixes the memory problem since it resets everything on the player. But be warned flashing kernels and roms does void your warranty and can mess up your player if not done right. However, there's tons of tutorials on how to do it. If you like it stock, , iJimaniac has made a custom rom called R.E.D.D it uses the stock kernel with a modified version of the stock rom.
Also do you mind taking a screenshot or picture of your taskmanger and apps?

It is indeed rooted. However, can't I already overclock to 1.2 ghz? I mean I have tegrak and it lets me overclock to that already. I don't even mind the CPU speed now, it's just the random reboots I get that bother me. And if it needs to be said, I really cannot remember if my player has always done this...
So unless flashing a kernel or rom is actually gonna make my player run smoother (I've heard that stock stuff runs smoothest because it's made for that specific device), I don't really see a need to do it. I'm perfectly fine with the way it is stock...Just not fine with the occasional bits of lag I get (temple run is basically not playable on my player, because even the slightest hang will screw you up) and the stupid reboots.
Sure. You want a screenshot of advanced task killer open (showing all the apps that are currently running)? As for apps, how do you want me to get a picture of all those? It'd take several pictures because I'd have to scroll through the apps list and take multiple pictures.

[Q] What's the optimal rom for a 4.0 ?

Hi there,
Yesterday i succesfully rooted and installed CyanogenMod 10.2 on my Galaxy Player (YP-G1) \o/
At start, with no app launched, the experience seems smooth, but then i noticed that about 310 Mo of memory was used, it left me with only 50 Mo. With the the samsung stock rom, it used 100-150 Mo less.
So as soon as i start something, memory gets full and the device becomes sluggish.
I'm trying to remove some default apps but i've got the feeling that it's because of android 4.3
So...
1) It is possible to even use 4.3 with so few memory available ?
2) If not, what's the best rom for a galaxy player ? With "best" i mean one that is smooth/fast/low memory usage.
To be more specific: what's the memory usage of, say, android 2 vs 4 ?

CM10.1 and CM10.2 are a lot more ram intensive than any of the stock based roms out there. You can use Greenify https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify&hl=en to freeze apps that are using the most ram. Also you can use All-in-One Toolbox https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.toolbox.full&hl=en to freeze apps from even starting up until you access them. The best method I found was using Auto Memory Manager https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lim.android.automemman&hl=en with Clean Master https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cleanmaster.mguard&hl=en. I'd set AMM with 10 40 60 120 140 160, and had CM clear ram when 95% of it was used when you turn off the screen. Make sure you allow both to be kept alive by the other. This gave me available ram of 100-120 most of the time. Good luck.
The best rom for our player is a highly subjective topic. For me, I believe the best rom is REDD from iJimanic. It is just a modified version of the stock rom, but it benefits from slightly better ram management, along with no weird issues. However, I will say it doesn't have the best battery life (it's better than stock though).
The memory usage really depends on the device. For instance, on our device CM10.1 uses about 270-310mb, but on my brothers T-mobile GS2 it was using about 350-400mb. Our devices on the other hand are limited in the fact that they have 512mb.

Hi there,
Yesterday i succesfully rooted and installed CyanogenMod 10.2 on my Galaxy Player (YP-G1) \o/

You can use 4.3 with very low memory. Android will temporarily stop background processes when your active apps need more ram.
I personally use App Quarantine to freeze applications and system apps that I don't need, take a look at your list of running and cached applications.
You will also want to reduce your MinFree value to 25-50MB, this will keep more apps active when you run low on memory and also prevent the continuous app stop/start.

Pokemon Go Performance Issues - Overheating causing reduced Frame Rate & Crashing

I'll start off by saying I basically bought the surnia Moto E 2015 (xt1526) specifically for an affordable way to play Pokemon Go. When it's working it works quite well but when in very high particle effect situations such as Battling or Evolving Pokemon it will start to get very hot and then eventually the frame rate will drop and sometimes the app will crash. I've tried a few different ROMs (Cyanogenmod 13, ResurrectionRemix, Cypher) and all seem to have the same issue. The only Kernel I've tried so far are stock and Squid Kernel.
That being said though I've had some experience tweaking and trying to optimize phones for normal app and multitasking usage but I've no experience at all trying to optimize for gaming. If anyone has gotten this particular phone to run optimally without crashes etc while gaming would you kindly suggest the Kernel, Roms and/or settings I should use for doing so? I've seen that were some good gaming ROM's for otus but those seem to have not been brought over to the surnia.
TLDR: surnia xt1526 overheats plummets in FPS and crashes while battling in Pokemon Go, any help appreciated
Update: After trying many different suggestions though I'm sure they did help out others they did not work for me. My phone's GPU was overheating up to 62 degrees sometimes in particular while many people seemed to be tweaking their CPU's mine was still overheating and crashing with those tweaks.
So this is probably a YMMV thing but what finally worked for me was installing a kernel that had some good GPU tweaks and the one I found best so far has been Inazuma R5 it actually has the GPU's lowest setting underclocked to 100mhz, with 400mhz still being the max and also makes use of adreno idler to keep the GPU cooler.
So if you've been having these issues I'd suggest opening up Kernel Adiutor after your phone starts crashing and overheating and taking note of the temperatures. If it's your GPU look for a kernel with adreno idler. If it's CPU then you can go with some of the other suggestions below.
Edit: I want to be clear that this is mainly only a problem with BATTLE after 30-60 consecutive minutes in Pokemon Go (sometimes also with mass evolution because of the heavy animation effects during evolution) So please specify, if you could, whether or not you've had a stable battling experience for extended periods of time.
Ive been using CM13 and squid kernel r16g and had been experiencing lags in pokemon go until i tried out some settings in kernel auditor. In kernel auditor under the tab low memory killer scroll down and select 'very light' and disable adaptive low memory killer(the first option in the 'low memory killer' tab) and now switch the tab to 'virtual memory' and scroll down to the last option and set the memory limit to around 460-480mb. Now under the tab 'cpu-plug' disable the intelliplug switch and there will be an option called as touch to boost, you just gotta enable that(this option is a major player in making the game to perform well). So just try this and see if this works, it worked very well for, i hope it does the same for you.
P.S. This may cause your battery to drain more as you set ur phone to perform more, So after you finish playing the game set it to default.

I will try this tonight thank you for your response!
Can this phone run the game fine on stock firmware? Or have you only tried it on custom roms?

A friend of mine tried playing this on stock ROM, frame drops lags and crashes all the way.
Havent quite used the stock rom lately....just been flashing roms quite frequently, so can't really say abt the performance of this game in stock And yes, a must try ROM recommendation for all you guys, playing pokemon go, wud be slim rom. Flashed Slim rom yesterday and found it to be light weighted ROM compared to many other roms n that too without a custom kernel. I tried playing pokemon go while in Slim and it worked just fine without lags or crashes. The only thing is that Slim is based on AOSP/CAF so features r limited unlike other roms.
it works fine on mine phone with stock 6.0 and squid kernel, I think that your lags are caused by ram hungry apps in background
ive bought three boost phones in the last couple of weeks just for spoofing devices, all running perfect. I pushed twrp 3.0.2, official cm13, and that's it.
edit: here is the full setup i used when flashing and unlocking/rooting from my google drive:

I don't know I'm not really running much in the background just Gmail and Telegram, as I'm playing more and more it seems like it starts to overheat then starts lagging after doing battles for about 20mins straight. I have to put it in front of a fan and let it cool off before I can do battles again. So I think it's just a hardware issue. Unless anyone else has been able to do battles for more than 30mins without running in to lag and crashing

Have you been able to do battles for more than 30mins straight with no problems?

Yes. The only problem I've been having is I think my spoofer is getting kicked out do to low RAM every once in a while and I've got to reboot it. Everything else is all good. I really love these phones.
