[Q] Is Chrome the default stock ROM browser or is it still the old Android browser? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm confused by this: I read multiple times that Chrome is gonna replace the previous "Android Browser" with 4.0 and above, is this actually the case for stock ROMs?
I'm using a DHD with Jelly Time (Android 4.2.2) and I still have the Android Browser as my default Browser and can additionally download Chrome from the Play Store. This could be a custom ROM specific feature, but I'm not sure..
Can some of you using a stock ROM confirm whether Chrome is the new default Browser and if the "Android Browser" still exists?

Android browser is the default. It's basically a version of chrome, from what i understand, but yes, they are still separate.

It appears as if it depends on your device. The "stock" browser on both my devices is Chrome. It is the only browser that came with them. They are a Nexus 7 and a Motorola Razr M, both running JB.

I bought galaxy s duos and there was no chrome browser there . I had to install it from net. . so chrome is not default in that sense.

request: browser.apk from touchwiz roms to install on stock rom

I am not digging touchwiz too much, except for the browser. Samsung finally found a way to stop the keyboard lag that is present in every honeycomb browser and tablet.
I tried copying the browser.apk from the deodexed rom and loading it into the bonsai ROM is root explorer, but it doesn't work. Is it possible to make it work?
Thanks.
im no wiz on honeycomb
in fact i just got here a hew hours back but i know a ton about touchwiz
im guessing that the browser relies a ton on the touch wiz framework just how there music player and many other stuff on the galaxy s series did
Yeah. Considering that Docs browser user sgent sticky fix mods the framework not browser apk, just porting the latter probably won't work.
If you must absolutely avoid TW, then the newest Dolphon browsers solve the input lag too. Opera mobile also.
But imho this tab tw(uekm7) is really much much better than expected and very much worth trying, especially with devs like Doc and Calkulin working up improvements to it too.
Tw browser is integrated with TW framework, so making a standalone TW browser is a monumental task and probably will never happen.

What about comparing the samsung browser to the stock honeycomb browser, and finding out what samsung did to fix the typing lag/blue highlighting?
Just upgraded my xoom to HC 3.2 and the "keyboard lag" is all gone!

Call it whatever you want, but the file in question is called browser.apk, which is what we were discussing.

Firefox 9.0 apk?

Anyone have a link to the new Firefox 9 apk as it is no longer compatible with the nook tablet via the android market like the old one use to be.
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/releases/9.0b6/android/en-US/
Thanks for that link
And that is the beta version of firefox
Go up a few directories: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/releases/
It should be pointed out: neither release or beta builds update themselves. You will need to do so manually.
Maybe check out Firefox's Aurora channel? It can update itself.
This is a better link:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/releases/latest/android/en-US/
Seems to be nearly unusable on my NT unfortunately...
Use Dolphin Browser HD it's the best browser in market, has very useful setting like touch gestures and other stuff, try it out it is good.

I agree completely. I am a die-hard Firefox fan; been using it since it was Firebird. But the mobile version is crap It's slow and half the pages didn't load for me. I switched to Dolphin HD and it was much better than Firefox or Opera Mini. And I was still able to load all my Firefox bookmarks using the Xmarks addon for Dolphin.
yea i agree with the previous two people. I tried aurora but it just doesnt run fast as dolphin...at all
I already use dolphin HD on all my android devices but i wanted to be able to use my bookmarks from my desktop firefox and be able to blobk ads like i can with firefox desktop and firefox mobile. I can not find anything simalir for dolphin hd which sucks as when i play flash based vides they get slowed down if there are flash based ads on the screen and i cant just click ont he single element i wanna run it has to run all the flash elements on the page instead of just the one i want. That is why i was looking to use firefox over dolphin because the mobile version has ad block plus and i just wish i could get the same for dolphin hd but i ahvent found any way to do the same thing.

Import Galaxy S2 Browser.apk

Would it possible to import the Galaxy S2 browser into the Rezound? There has yet to be a smoother browser that I have seen.
Also the browser on a Droid Charge with the latest update is way smoother than the Rezound. Iphone smooth and completely functional.
Would replacing the browser.apk with the other browsers work or would it result in a bootloop?
I use Opera Mobile as my main browser and just lacks the functionality that the stock/dolphin browser has.

You stand a better chance to port a browser from another HTC phone. Since the GN runs almost AOSP ICS and the Rezound runs Sensed Gingerbread the two couldn't be less compatible. Even if they were both Gingerbread the fact that HTC has its own source tree would keep most apps from other ROMs from working.
So in stock AOSP Gingerbread they may make a system call for com.resource where in the HTC build they call for com.htc.resource . Hope the explanation helps.
Do you think it's better than dolphin?
Opera is better in every way except when it comes to playing videos on youtube and having it display in the youtube app is impossible since it handles everything on its own.
Opera Mobile will not open another app like dolphin or the main browser can.
Opening a Android Market app on the stock or dolphin browser will open the app on the actual market app. Opera mobile doesn't have this function.
It definitely is the smoothest browser though aside from the galaxy s2. Funny how a galaxy s2 has a better browser than the galaxy nexus.

Does ANY mobile browser let you control new tabs?

What is the obsession with Android web browsers and new tabs?! Dolphin Browser HD, my preference, is great but EVERY TIME I want it to open a link it opens in a new tab. EVERY TIME I click a link from a desktop widget Dolphin opens and creates a new tab. Why? My desktop browser overwrites the content on the tab I have open unless I tell it not to. Mostly I prefer that. I don't need instant access to the last three tabs I had open yesterday. Why is there not a control to change that behavior? Seems so simple. Dolphin has no control for DO NOT open in new tab. Neither does Opera for Android. Neither does Firefox for Android.
try chrome beta instead.
chrome beta opens link in the same tab, but when you long-press on a link, you have a few options, like "open in new tab"
AFAIK only Chrome does that but u need ICS in order to install it
It doesn't do it to me everytime. But regardless I cant sway away from dolphin HD. The only problem i have had with Dolphin HD is downloading things.
There's a setting in Dolphin to control this. I don't know where it is. Try contacting Dolphin support.

boat browser
Try Boat Browser. I've been using it since my droid charge and onto my razr maxx. Allows new tab controls. Other very cool features to go with it as well. Completely replaced my stock browser

Aye it does, but Chrome beta is ICS-only. It worked wonderfully on my Galaxy Nexus, and I was sad to find out it doesn't work here
Just be aware that some websites default to opening external links in new tabs. vBulletin forums do this, and XDA is vB if I'm not mistaken. So, it's not necessarily a browser issue.

[Q] What Browser (for Desktop View)?

SO, what browsers are available that allow setting User Agent string sticky (not every time you launch)?
I've been using Dolphin, also ICS Browser+. ICS Browser+ doesn't work in Jelly Bean, so that only leaves Dolphin. I gather from reading the owner's manual that the Desktop View check box is not sticky (in the stock browser), you have to manually set it for each site.
Last I looked, Firefox and Chrome both lack this obvious feature. Are there any others out there that have a User Agent setting?
Thanks, Bob Graham
Boat Browser is the only one that I know of that will support Flash Player in Jelly Bean. I still use Dolphin HD for other stuff, because I like the left side swipe to access bookmarks, but I use Boat Browser if I need theFlash functionality.
I was not happy when Dolphin pulled the option to enable Flash. We should be able to make that choice.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Boat browser and Dolphin browser both have a setting to put your browser in desktop mode permanently. These are also the best two browsers for Android in the order that I've listed them, with Boat browser being #1 because it's slightly less resource-hungry, and a little faster than Dolphin.
As far as Adobe Flash, it works mostly fine in Boat browser. Dolphin has stopped support for Flash, so you have to use an older version of Dolphin. You can download all versions of Flash, including the latest version of Dolphin that supported Flash at the link below:
